WWF Monday Night RAW, April 1997, Week Three

Attendance: 14,153 at WA KeyArena

Commentary Team: Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler

QtFg7iC.jpg

We welcome you live to Seattle, Washington, home to tonight's edition of Monday Night RAW! RAW kicks off this week with Owen Hart making his way down to the ring with a microphone. Owen says that this Sunday he faces the first obstacle of his WWF World Heavyweight Championship title reign in the form of Vader. Owen says that he has faced off against the best the WWF have had to offer before, but never someone as dangerous as Vader. Owen continues by saying that even if he has the advantage over Vader, he always has to watch out for that little twerp Jim Cornette at ringside. Owen says that despite all of the odds seemingly being against him, he knows he will come out on top at Backlash this Sunday! Before Owen can continue...

Vader runs down to the ring and attacks him!

Vader starts beating down Owen with a barrage of clubbing blows. Vader throws Owen into the corner and hits him with a body avalanche. Before Vader can hit Owen with the Vader Bomb, the lights go out...

Mark Henry w/Farooq vs Barry Horowitz

Mark Henry made his debut last week when he attacked Diamond Dallas Page on behalf of The Nation of Domination. This match is nothing more than a squash match that Henry completely dominates. Henry finishes off Horowitz in just under three minutes of pure domination after hitting him with the World's Strongest Slam (Military Press into a Powerslam).

WINNER: Mark Henry

After that match is over, we cut to Eddie Guerrero backstage. Eddie says that he's been scouting the competition on Monday Night RAW the past few weeks and he's come to a stark conclusion, there is nobody on RAW who can hold a candle to him! Eddie says that applies to everyone from Barry Horowitz to even Sting! Before Eddie can continue his grandstanding...

Scott Steiner comes into frame!

Steiner says that if Eddie thinks that there's nobody on RAW that can defeat him, then he's full of crap! Steiner says that if Eddie really wants to prove what he's preaching, then he'd face him at Backlash! Eddie accepts Scott's challenge and says that he will prove once and for all that Scott was nothing more than a knockoff Rick Steiner! Scott laughs him off and says that he'll see him at Backlash.

Sasaki says that he spoke to Vince McMahon today and he got himself a WWF European Championship match at Backlash against Rey Mysterio! Sasaki finishes by saying that Mysterio better be prepared, because he has a few surprises in mind for their match.

After that match is over, we cut to a darkened room where Paul Bearer is located. Paul says that last week Sting made a grave mistake by even attempting to fight his Undertaker. Bearer says that he knows Sting is a very stubborn man, so if he wants to finally speak, then he should come onto the Funeral Parlor at Backlash! Bearer finishes by saying that Sting better come or there will be grave consequences!

Mike Tenay & Bobby Heenan run down the card for tonight before they are interrupted by The Kliq's music. Hall, Nash, & Bret make their way down to the ring to a chorus of jeers. Bret says that he didn't expect a different reaction from the worst people in America, the people of Portland, Oregon! Bret tells the crowd to shut up, because they have a lot to say. Bret says that Scott Hall may have failed to get the job done last week against Randy Savage, but he's positive that Kevin Nash will finish the job tonight against Adam Clarke. Bret says that after tonight, The Kliq will have at least a 50% chance of winning the WWF Global Championship and with that, control over Smackdown! The match comes to an end when Benoit tries locking Jack in the Crippler Crossface, but before he can, Jack kicks him away and hits him with the Double Arm DDT! Nash starts the match off by blasting Clarke with a big boot. Nash throws Clarke into the corner and hits him with an elbow to the head. Nash attempts a powerslam, but Clarke wiggles out of it and sends Nash crashing into the corner with a dropkick. Clarke picks up Nash and hits him with a backbreaker. Clarke throws Nash off the ropes and hits him with a back body drop. Clarke attempts a back suplex, but Nash elbows him in the head and hits Clarke with a bulldog. Nash attempts the Jacknife Powerbomb, but Clarke reverses it into a facebuster. The match comes to an end when Clarke attempts the Meltdown! What followed was a clash of Jannetty’s experience against Berlyn’s technical talent as Jannetty used excellent ring awareness to counteract Berlyn’s rough grappling style. Unfortunately for Jannetty it wasn’t quite enough and he ended up leaving the Rose Garden with a disappointing loss at the hands of Berlyn’s Extremely German Suplex.</p><p> <strong>WINNER:</strong> Berlyn</p><p> <strong>RATING: 66 / C+</strong></p><p></p></div><div style="text-align:center;"></div><div></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> <img alt="lYZHG9G.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/lYZHG9G.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="46799" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><p><img alt="9CwtrKj.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/9CwtrKj.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><div style="text-align:center;"></div><p> Dean Malenko is fired up backstage, the usually ice cold technician showing off his heated side as he rants about Sabu. Malenko understands that Sabu wants a title match, he wouldn’t be a professional wrestler if he didn’t, but his actions last week were disgusting and Malenko won’t stand for it. He says that he considers Super Astros his home and he won’t see anybody disrespect it. Callis appreciates Lynn’s talent, but makes it very clear to him that the only man who can claim to be the franchise player of his show is the champion, and Lynn doesn’t have any gold around his waist. With Psicosis watching on from ringside Super Crazy & Juvi used their quick, high octane offence and underhanded tactics to take control of the match early on, only for Hurricane to wipe them both out with a flying crossbody to the outside! In one fell swoop it looked like the WWF’s resident superheroes were about to take the match as Avatar managed to get Juventud back into the ring only for Psicosis to jump onto the apron and distract the official. Avatar didn’t appreciate this injustice and went after Psicosis only for Juventud to capitalise and drop Avatar with the Juvi Driver and steal the victory.</p><p> <strong>WINNER:</strong> Super Crazy & Juventud Guerrera</p><p> <strong>RATING: 60 / C</strong></p><p> </p><p> <img alt="KKFxLN1.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/KKFxLN1.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><img alt="8fP4JPI.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/8fP4JPI.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> Post-match Psicosis was delighted with the result and started shouting down the camera about how “all you people are gonna see what we can do” when suddenly Billy Kidman leapt from the security barricade and took him down with a flying clothesline. Malenko wrestled his usual technical game early on but found himself on the back foot when Sabu mixed his pace with his pure brutality, hitting a springboard elbow and a running one legged dropkick as well as a barrage of stiff looking strikes. Malenko had to play Sabu at his own game and he did it well, unleashing a striking style that many aren’t used to seeing from the former Cruiserweight Champion. At numerous junctures Malenko attempted to set up for the Crossface only for Sabu to escape his clutches, including one point where he simply pulled Malenko in and gouged his eye. It was here that the tide truly turned as Sabu caught Malenko with a leaping spiked DDT followed by the springboard legdrop to take the victory as he marches towards an inevitable confrontation with WWF Cruiserweight Champion Jushin Thunder Liger next week only on Super Astros.</p><p> <strong>WINNER:</strong> Sabu</p><p> <strong>RATING: 77 / B</strong></p><p></p><p></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> <strong>SHOW GRADE: 70 / C+</strong></p></div><p></p>
