Asaemon's Broadcaster Database

For historical Real World Mods

Evolving the broadcasters through the Closed-Circuit era, Satellite-TV era; the PPV era; and into the modern On-Demand era.

Includes nGo compatible broadcaster pictures.

The latest version is available here ->Download Link

I don't have PM activated on the GDS forum, but feel free to contact me on either Be the Booker!, Home of Pro Wrestling Discord or Wrestling Nexus Discord.

Can I use this broadcaster database in my mod?

This broadcaster database is free for Real World mod-makers to use in their mods. However, I do ask that you credit me if anything I've done in this mod is being used as I spent a lot of time creating this database including the nGo compatible pictures.

Can I use your pictures in my mod?

Yes if you credit me and as long as it's not another broadcaster database mod.

How do the broadcaster database work?

The mod includes a lot of broadcaster changes from the 70s, 80s, 90s until the current era. TV networks that expands and/or changes logos and names. TV networks, PPV providers and Closed-circuit providers that go out of business.

How do I use this broadcaster database in my mod?

Remove all "broadcasters", "broadcaster changes" and "media groups" from your mod. Import "media groups" from Asaemon's broadcaster database; then import the "broadcasters" from Asaemon's broadcasters database; and finally import the "broadcaster changes" from Asaemon's broadcaster database. Depending on the starting year of your mod, you manually have to edit the broadcasters with any broadcaster changes that will not happen due to expired trigger dates. WWE Network, New Japan World and AJPW TV needs to manually have the "company" set as owner.[

Can this broadcaster database be used in my fantasy mod or other project?

For use in other mods or projects, send me a PM on Home of Pro Wrestling Discord or Wrestling Nexus Discord and ask for permisson. I don't have PM activated on the GDS forum.

Can I use Asaemon's broadcaster database in another broadcaster database mod?

No!

Can i use another broadcaster database as a base and import from Asaemon's Broadcaster Database?

That could cause duplicates and prevent broadcaster changes from happening, so I would not recommend it.

Do the broadcasters have correct month/year in the "begins with" and "closes" fields?

Yes, except in a few cases when I couldn't find information about the opening/closing months.

Is all broadcaster real and not stopgaps imported from the default database?

Yes all broadcasters are real! So no C-Verse stopgap broadcasters.

Why did you set the product preferences like that?

Due to the game mechanics and aiming to keep it realistic! How many lucha libre or puroresu promotions have you seen on major mainstream TV networks outside Japan or Mexico?

Why did you set the broadcaster coverage like that?

Due to the game mechanics and aiming to keep it realistic! TEW can't simulate TV networks with coverage in the same region. In Europe several TV networks aired WWF and WCW which can't be simulated in TEW if the TV networks have coverage all over Europe.

Why did you set the media groups like that?

Due to the game mechanics! TEW can't change media groups with broadcaster changes or narratives.

Why are promotion owned broadcasters missing their owners?

There are no promotions included in the broadcaster database, so after importing you manually have to set WWF, NJPW and AJPW as owners.

Looking forward to this.

A large part of my time with historical mods is spent editing stuff like this to be more accurate...to often varying results.

I do wonder if you’ve added that short span of time in the U.S. when there existed subscription over-the-air TV stations (ONTV, SelecTV, WHT, Z Channel, etc.).

I've not done much work in North America so far, except some product preferences and adding some missing broadcasters like Turner Premiere, but i've added all those subscription based TV stations to the list.

So far UK and especially the rest of Europe have gotten a complete overhaul, including PPV and subscription based broadcasters. A lot of added broadcasters that did air wrestling back in the days. Most of these are missing in the other mods i've done some sneak peaks inside (despite some have close to 500 broadcasters).

I've also tried to balance the broadcaster ranges, so you will not end up with some Nordic/Scandinavian PPV provider that is big or very big all over Europe.

Current status!

I'm currently working on UK (and might then do some more research for Iberia and Italy). The rest of Europe is pretty much done.

All quality posts with suggestions like this about missing TV Networks or PPV providers are always welcome.

Only some minor manual editing would be required for use with your 94 or 95 databases (for those preset broadcaster changes that don't trigger).

Thanks! Just downloaded it and looking over it now.

Great to see the over-the-air subscription services I mentioned before have been added. And since you did ask for feedback on any other issues, I'll point out some things I noticed in passing:

The TSN logo you have in the picture folder wasn't in use until the late '90s or early '00s, iirc, after ESPN bought a minority stake in the company (indeed, the then-new logo uses the same design as ESPN's). The logo up to that point was different. You can find it on logopedia, which is an invaluable resource for this sort of thing (I've used it myself when making my own edits to databases).

On the subject of TSN, they were originally a paid (subscription) network (or at least the Canadian equivalent of that). They became a basic (commercial) cable channel there in '88, which saw their viewership increase from "1 million potential viewers to 5 million" (according to the source in the wikipedia article). Unfortunately you can't change a broadcaster in the database from subscription to commercial, but the way I had it in my own prior edits to databases was to set them up as commercial from their launch with a small footprint across Canada, and then in '88 increase their footprint (from either very small to small, or small to medium, I forget which).

Another note: SCORE (that is the SCORE that aired as part of FNN) wasn't a subscription service, but commercial.

And you're also missing some stations that were (and still are for some DISH users) regional superstations like WWOR, WPIX, and KTLA. Each had history airing pro wrestling. Like WGN, all of those stations split up their national and local broadcast feeds after the Syndex rules went into effect in '89.

Also, minor quibble:

A lot of the Mexican networks in your database have coverage in Puerto Rico. This isn’t accurate for a variety of reasons. Puerto Rico gets the major American networks and the American Spanish language stations due to local affiliates in that area. I’ve noticed this issue in other mods. I’m guessing it’s a desire to have promotions in Mexico and/or Puerto Rico potentially extend their reach beyond their areas. In the case of desire to expand via coverage, there’s more logical ways about it. Some Mexican broadcast channels seep into southern parts of states like Texas, Arizona, and California (and vice versa, btw).

It is better to keep a consistent line, so Puerto Rico has been removed from the broadcasters that also had that region. Next update will also have some newly added Mexican networks.

Current status of the mod. All the posted suggestions have been added. I've also added more regional tv stations and regional superstations that have a history of airing wrestling. Also added new stuff to Italy, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
