We’ll see Buddy Rose, Ted Dibiase, the Road Warriors, Kimala, and a NWA Television title defense by Ricky Steamboat. In addition the NWA World Heavyweight Champion Dusty Rhodes will join us. All this and more as we go to the ring for our opening contest.

Rose squashes the young Simpson while managing to argue with members of the audience concerning his weight which leads to come comical moments.

Bobby Heenan and the NWA World Tag Team Champions join Jim Ross. Heenan says that when you wear the gold you make the rules so listen up. The Andersons are invoking Champions’ privilege and they will NOT sign any contracts to face that pair of face painted maniacs. Ross interjects that he’s never heard of Champions’ privilege and Arn shoots back that from the looks of him he’s never heard of a gym either but that doesn’t change anything. They have the belts and they call the shots!

<b>TED DIBIASE VS PAT ROSE</b>

 

Dibiase makes his debut in convincing fashion by dominating the match with Rose. The finish comes when Rose is whipped into the ropes and when he rebounds Dibiase catches him with a powerslam.

Ted Dibiase joins Tony Schiavone at the interview area. Schiavone touts him as one of the best wrestlers in the world and mentions his background including being an alumni of the famous West Texas State football team. Dibiase thanks him for his kind welcome and says he’s come to Jim Crockett Promotions because he wants to fight the best in the world and that’s who he sees in this company from top to bottom. Before Schiavone can say anything else someone else joins them.

 

 

Tully walks out with a big smile. He says he couldn’t help but overhear just now and he felt compelled to come out here and set the record straight. First off, you’re looking at THE best wrestler on the planet and second, Dibiase is nothing but a loser and a quitter. Because Tully was the quarterback on that team and how many games did Ted play? One? Maybe two?

 

Dibiase keeps his calm and tries to play peacemaker. He tells Tully he’s not here to relive the past or cause problems, he’s just here to earn a living like anyone else. Blanchard scoffs and points a finger in Dibiase’s face telling him he’s not wanted in this company and if Ted hasn’t noticed, Tully has a pretty good team around him again, it’d be ashamed if he got hurt again so he can run away and quit. Now Dibiase isn’t so calm and he slaps Blanchard’s hand out of his face telling Tully to get out of his face. Blanchard grins a little, backing up and leaves but not before telling Dibiase to watch his back.

Casey shows himself to be a dangerous opponent but Steamboat shows why he’s the Television Champion in overcoming Casey and he retains his title with a flying cross body block.

But you see if they want to invoke Champions’ privilege the Road Warriors are going to make something up as well. Tell’em Hawk!

 

“Weeeeeellll….” Hawk says he and Animal have decided that they have privilege too. They have the privilege to beat up the Andersons every time they see them. They have the privilege to break some bones, crush some skulls, and rip them limb from limb. And more than anything they have the privilege to be the next NWA World Tag Team Champions. What a rush!

There’s a fine line between domination and criminal assault and battery. Hawk and Animal show how thin that line is in this one. Del Ray and Mr. O take a pounding in this short but definitive match which sees Del Ray on the receiving end of a Doomsday Device.

But Magnum failed once to conquer the Madness and he lost this title so if he wants to lose again, well the cream always rises to the top and that cream is named Savage!

Parsons puts up a good fight but not many can withstand the fury of the Ugandan Giant. Once Kimala starts laying in the chops and other power moves the writing is on the wall and Kimala ends the match with a running splash.

The NWA World Heavyweight Champion Dusty Rhodes comes out to the interview area with the aid of a crutch.

 

“First of all, I would like to thank the many, many fans throughout this country that wrote cards and letters to Dusty Rhodes, the American Dream, while I was down. Secondly, I want to thank Jim Crockett Promotions for giving me the time to come out here and make it clear to the world that I am still here! I am still the NWA Champion and I will defend this title on one leg, no leg, whatever jack!

 

Now, I don't have to say a lot more about the way I feel about Ric Flair. No respect! No honor! There is no honor among thieves in the first place. He and his cronies put hard times on Dusty Rhodes and his family. You tried to end the American Dream! You don't know what hard times are, daddy! Hard times are when the textile workers around this country are out of work and got four, five kids, and can't pay their wages, can't buy their food. Hard times are when the auto workers are out of work and they tell them 'Go home!'. And hard times are when a man has worked at a job thirty years — thirty years! — they give him a watch, kick him in the butt and say 'Hey, a computer took your place, daddy!'. That's hard times! That's hard times.

 

And Ric Flair, you put hard times on this country by taking Dusty Rhodes out. That's hard times! And we all had hard times together. I admit, I don't look like the athletes are today supposed to look. My belly is just a little big, my hiney is just a little big, but brother, I am bad, and they know I'm bad. And there were two bad people: one was John Wayne — and he's dead, brother — and the other one is right here!

 

Nature Boy Ric Flair, the world's heavyweight title belongs to these people, not to you. I am blessed and honored to represent these people from all walks of life. White, black, rich, poor, men, women. I am THEIR champion! I'm gonna reach out right now. I want you at home to know, my hand is touching your hand for this gathering of the biggest body of people in this country, in this universe, all over the world. Now reach it out! Because the love that was given me — and this time I will repay you, now. Because I will strike down on Ric Flair and his goons with all the power and fury you have given to me.

Two big brawlers slug it out for several minutes with neither man getting a true upperhand. Just when one is close to having firm control the other fights back for the next few moments. Duggan feeds on the near unanimous support of the crowd and stuns Khruschev with several thudding right hands before he whips him into the ropes and hits a diving shoulder block for the win.

Landel attacks early hoping to end this match quickly but Von Erich isn’t going away easily. Soon Kerry applies his strength and pure athletic talent to take the match over. It ends when Landel is slung into the corner and when he staggers out he walks into a discus punch.

Garvin dominates the match all while showing off for Missy and scoring an occasional kiss on the cheek. Horner does his job well and makes Garvin look great and when Jimmy hits the brainbuster the three count is elementary.

Blanchard is laser focused in this one, attacking Sawyer before the bell even rings. He beats him down for several minutes showing a clinic in wrestling skill before ending the match with his slingshot suplex.

A good back and forth tag match. Michaels in particular seems to be growing as a wrestler over the past months. The Guerreros use their veteran skills however to gain the momentum and Hector clinches the victory with a Gory-Bomb on Jannetty.

Allen looks to be tough as nails and shows it early on by pummeling the younger man but Houston fights back, and seems to be on his way for a victory. He almost hits the running bulldog, but Allen senses he’s close to the ropes and runs towards them, launching Houston over the ropes and down to the floor which causes the referee to call for the bell.

Ric Flair in a tailor made suit comes out to join Jim Ross. He says he wants a bird’s eye view of his cousins the Andersons as they take care of business. Flair reminds us that he is dressed in a $10,000 suit and this is what a real man and a real champion looks like in a clear shot at NWA World Champion Dusty Rhodes.

Tag team wrestling 101. The Andersons are seamless in their work and take pleasure in punishing both of their opponents, even inviting Tanaka to tag in so he can feel some pain. They finally end the match with Arn holding Simpson in place with an arm bar and Ole coming off the top with a knee drop.

Dressed to the nines, Blanchard and Heenan approach. Blanchard says he’s surprised Dibiase is still here, he figured he’d quit at least a week ago. Dibiase apologizes to Ross for the interruption and asks Blanchard what his problem is. Heenan says the only problem is a loser taking valuable television time from the best wrestler in the world. Dibiase says if Tully wants a fight he’ll meet him in the ring but Blanchard shrugs it off saying he doesn’t punch down before walking off with Heenan. Dibiase, clearly irritated, says there’s no accounting for class.

Dr. Death destroys Blair in a matter of minutes, throwing him around with a series of powerful suplexes before ending it with the Ura nage.

You wouldn’t expect Flair to have any trouble in this but Armstrong puts up a great fight and has Flair on his heels more than once. When he sees his man in trouble Heenan gets the attention of the referee allowing Flair to kick Armstrong below the belt. He quickly goes to work on Armstrong’s left leg and when he locks in the figure four, Armstrong has to submit.

Flair and Heenan go to the interview area and meet up with Jim Ross. Flair says that what you just witnessed was perfection in the squared circle. Now when you compare that with what the common cripple who wears HIS belt it’s no contest so if Dusty Rhodes has any guts…..

 

 

He doesn’t have to ask twice as the NWA World Champion, still using a crutch comes out. He tells Flair you won’t win titles by flapping your lips, you win it by hard work and when he’s healed he’ll show Flair what that feels like. Flair chuckles and says Dusty is very optimistic to think he’ll ever be fully healed.

 

 

Blanchard and the Andersons walk out behind Flair and the Nature Boy is all smiles but before they can advance on Dusty who is already preparing to use his crutch to defend himself, the Road Warriors appear on the scene which stops everyone in their tracks.

 

 

Hawk and Animal are ready for a fight even if it’s against the numbers but Heenan quickly gathers his men and they retreat. As Ross tells us to come back next week Rhodes is loudly questioning where they ran off to.

Tony Schiavone welcomes Ted Dibiase over to the interview area and congratulates him on his victory. Before he can respond, we hear slow clapping as Tully Blanchard and Bobby Heenan enter the frame. Blanchard says he’s really impressed because he thought Ted would quit as soon as the match started because that’s his normal habit. Dibiase is clearly annoyed with Blanchard stalking him again this week and asks what Tully wants. Blanchard says he just wanted the world to see what the greatest second generation wrestler in the world looks like. Schiavone tries to interject that Dibiase is also second generation but Blanchard questions if he really counts. Dibiase is now quickly getting angry and when Tully mentions how he was adopted and isn’t really second generation. Ted warns him to watch his mouth. Tully, not one to take such warnings seriously continues and says the only good thing is his own father can watch him succeed and Ted...well……

 

Suddenly Dibiase drops Blanchard with a right hand and Blanchard stares up at him from his seated position on the floor. Heenan quickly helps him up and they back off as Dibiase has had it. Once they’re gone, Ted apologizes to Schiavone for his actions but Schiavone says he thinks it was more than justified as we go to break.

We see security footage from presumably outside the TBS studios. Ted Dibiase pulls into the parking lot driving an older model Cadillac. He exits the car and pops the trunk to get his bags out.

 

 

Out of nowhere the Andersons run into the picture, slamming the trunk lid down on Dibiase’s upper back. They begin kicking him as Tully Blanchard and Ric Flair enter the frame as Flair drives in a red Ferrari.

 

 

They exit Flair’s car and Blanchard is carrying a baseball bat. By this point Dibiase is already beaten down but it doesn’t stop Blanchard from wacking him across the back with the bat. As Flair and the Andersons pick Dibiase up, Blanchard jabs him in the ribs with the bat before handing it off to Flair. Blanchard grabs Dibiase and suplexes him into his own car, cracking the back windshield. Dibiase lays there for a moment before rolling off the trunk out of sight of the camera. Flair, Blanchard, and the Andersons walk into the studio with big smiles.

Ross tries to bring up the earlier attack on Dibiase but Flair cuts him off and says he’s not talking about that he’s out here to talk about Dusty Rhodes. The fact is he spent an hour on the phone with Jim Crockett and now he’s got what he wants. He has a title match versus Dusty Rhodes at the Great American Bash and he is within reach of bringing that belt back to where it belongs. He smiles at the camera and says whether Rhodes likes it or not, learn to love it, because Ric Flair is the best thing going today!

Taylor and Tanaka have a pretty good match but Taylor eventually pulls away and gains the advantage thanks to Tanaka telegraphs a dropkick which catches nothing but air. From there Taylor hits a few suplexes before nailing the flying forearm for the win.

Windham and Steamboat barely take their eyes off each other. Dillon says if Steamboat has any guts and fortitude…..but Steamboat cuts him off by snatching the paper out of his hand. Steamboat tells Windham he’ll need more than Dillon’s loud mouth to take his championship. Steamboat signs it and slams the pen on the desk before walking away...backwards, to keep his eyes on Windham. Dillon is very happy and tells Barry now they have him!

A very good and competitive title match. Houston is actually building momentum and Savage appears to be in trouble. Houston seems like he’s a step ahead of the champ who wasn’t taking Houston seriously as the match begins. Savage goes for a double axe handle off the top but Houston punches him in the gut. Savage is doubled over and Houston hits the bulldog.

Woman has put Savage’s foot on the bottom rope!

 

Houston is incensed and while he focuses on her, telling the referee what she did, Savage gets his second wind and nails Houston with a running knee to the back. Houston falls back like a falling tree and this allows Savage to climb to the top and hit the big elbow for the win.

Magnum cuts straight to the point. He says Savage has been ducking him and that ends now. We already have a NWA Television Championship match that was agreed to tonight so how about a NWA United States Championship match too? Savage says Magnum doesn’t deserve the title shot, but Magnum shoots back that if Savage is afraid and isn’t ‘macho’ enough to beat Magnum….

 

Now Savage is livid and points his finger in Magnum’s face telling him anyplace, anytime Magnum grins, says the Great American Bash will be just fine. Magnum leaves and now Savage realizes what he’s agreed to as Ross tells us to come back next week.

Hart puts up a good fight but Windham is just a pure athlete inside the ring. As soon as he has an opening Windham takes control and never gives it back until he hits a running lariat to end the match.

Ross tries to defend Steamboat’s record as champion but Windham dismisses it and says it all ends at the Bash!

A better match than many may have anticipated, these two go back and forth but Rich begins to build momentum near the end of the match. Hart frantically begins motioning to the back and out comes Kimala who slides into the ring and clobbers Rich from behind causing the disqualification.
