Puttin' the band back together [CVerse Alt]

<p><em>“My friend, I think you’ve had one cocktail too many. NGW is dead and buried, it’s been what, over six years now!”</em></p><p> </p><p> Nelson dismissed my idea with a wave of his hand and took another sip of his own cocktail. We may have had quite a few of those, true, but they felt absolutely necessary as our bodies were getting their tan on under the relentless Greek summer sun just a few months before we both turned 40. He was still a large man, no doubt, but rocking the dad bod, and he was flabby during the end of his NGW run to begin with. Still, he had 3 runs with the top NGW title to show for it, plus two tag title runs with me by his side. He had left England to join the promotion during his rookie year and helped put it on the map. He had been in the ring with a young Tommy Cornell and his cousin Eddie, with Marat Khoklov, some of the biggest names in the business. Me, I’d left the States to train in Japan, then moved to Europe for a career mostly spent playing his sidekick. I didn’t have the greatest of legacies to look back upon, but thinking about his and where he was at now gave me the big comeback line.</p><p> </p><p> <em>“And what has either of us done in these six years since?”</em></p><p> </p><p> Nelson put his cocktail down and lowered his sunglasses to look at me eye to eye. I knew I had his attention now. We’d been friends in what felt like forever. He knew I wasn’t bitter or jealous. This was coming from a good place.</p><p> </p><p> <em>“Tommy and Eddie, they moved on, had good runs with larger promotions. Adam (Matravers) too. Joey (Beauchamp). “Captain Hero” Stig Svensson. Hell, Marat (Khoklov) broke the damn game! Champagne Lover’s making movies in Hollywood! And look at where we are. What we’ve done.”</em></p><p> </p><p> Nelson sat up on his recliner, hastily rearranging his beach towel. Sitting made his gut pop out even worse than before, a painful exclamation point to my words. He didn’t say anything for a while, but I knew he was thinking, hard. I’ll admit I threw Stig on purpose in that mix; he was the only man Nelson ever played second fiddle to, when we were all under his leadership in the League of Heroes. Hopefully that would make him a little more empathetic, emotionally at least.</p><p> </p><p> <em>“So what do you suggest?”</em> he finally spoke up. I knew he’d heard me the first time, so this was him asking for specifics. He’d taken the bait.</p><p> </p><p> I savoured every second of my dramatic pause as I put my sunglasses back on</p><p> </p><p> </p><div style="text-align:center"><p><em>“We’re putting the band back together”</em></p><p> </p><p> <img alt="24zUUot.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/24zUUot.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png"><img alt="LXsj0bJ.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/LXsj0bJ.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png"></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="48474" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div><strong>Concept:</strong> Few years ago, I started a Road to Glory save using DerekB’s exceptional CVerse97 mod. I turned it into a save on some other forums, grew attached to my starting promotion and ended up booking it for 16 in-game years. This was summarized (and slightly expanded) <a href="http://greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=543156" rel="external nofollow">here</a>. That save basically evolved into an alternate CVerse timeline but can’t be converted to the new game, so instead I manually “imported” all the non-canon characters in the editor, aged their skills appropriately and decided to start a new promotion in the canon 2020 CVerse, sort of like an alternate timeline.</div></blockquote>

Ring of the Olympians

Ring of the Olympians is a company based in Greece, if the name wasn't enough of an indication already. It was started by a bunch of veterans and rookies who used to work for NGW but haven't managed to secure a deal with another "name" promotion since NGW closed its gates in 2014. Mixing familiar faces and nostalgia with some promising rookies for the future, it presents a similar "anything goes" product like it's major predecessors in the region (EWCW, UCR, NGW) hoping to repeat their success and avoid their failures.

Product: Classic Balanced. In essence, the perfect midpoint of all products, this places in-ring match quality as having equal importance with the entertainment aspect of playing to the crowd.

Face/Heel Divide: Loosely enforced

Four Corners title match to headline RotO's debut show!

bGfQcLk.jpgKRd8pBF.jpgAhotWa7.jpgLFcPDbz.jpg

Ring of the Olympians released a statement regarding its first ever show, which is now known to be titled "Ascent into Olympus". According to that statement, the night's marquee match will be a Fatal Four Way contest between four of NGW's biggest former stars on the current roster: Dovydas Vidmar, Nelson Frye, Petter Eriksson and Robert Howard. There's more than bragging rights on the line though, as the winner of the match will also become the inaugural RotO champion!

mjjRZhw.jpg

Women in the front

mPHy02V.jpg

Ring of the Olympians also made an announcement via social media, this one regarding its Women's Division and a Round Robin tournament to crown its first champion. This means that every competitor will be facing off in a singles match against every other woman in the division, with 2 points scored for a victory, 1 each for a time limit draw and no points for a loss. This playoff-style setup will give RotO's women plenty of time and matches to showcase their skills as well as legitimacy to the entire division, a fitting choice in the company's pursuit to establish themselves as NGW's successors since it was NGW that established Women's Wrestling in Europe and gave it a serious, sport-like presentation.

For your ease of tracking, we have created a scoring table for the tournament already.

I'm throwing my support 100% behind the Dublin gals, especially Cassie

They're an interesting case, that's for sure. I expect them to make it big and I'm curious how their heavy use of social media will play into it all.

Very excited to get started following along right from the start. I have never booked a fed in Europe so I don't know the workers at all. Will def be following!

Well, like I said at the end of the first post, a lot of the wrestlers here are regens and game-generated workers from my old CTE16/CVerse97 game. It's a mix of that and canon workers, kinda like an alternate timeline.

Love this! Love the use of Ring of the Olympians! Love the robust women's roster. The Dublin Gals should be HUGE!

Thank you! Think RotO emphasizes the promotion's home location plus it comes with two title belts, courtesy of southside_hitmen. As for the women's roster, it only made sense. I enjoy women's wrestling and NGW always had some great female competitors like Fusae Etsuko, Joanne Rodriguez and Geena the Warrior Princess. Hell, it even managed to make a Hall of Famer out of Viv "The Violence" Jacobs!

Absolutely love the magic the gathering cards background. Very different and nice. Good luck

Get those cards as soon as I upgrade my Merchandise! :D Thanks, that save is close to my heart, plus I'm trying to focus on a single diary and up the quality, as opposed to running several ones at the same time like I did with TEW16.

Round robin is a great way to determine the first champ.

It ain't no G1 Climax, but it'll give me a ton of matches to work with for the first bunch of shows!

Ascend to the Skies

Date: Sunday, Week 1 January 2020

Location: Athens, Southern Mediterranean, Europe

Attendance: 44

hFti817.jpgpIE2iww.jpg

Belcher: Hello everyone! Tonight, professional wrestling returns to Greece as we Ascend to the Skies! Big matches all around, a four corners match to determine the first ever RotO champion and the kick-off to the Women’s championship round robin tournament!

Bescott: So much to sink our teeth into, it’s the return of several familiar faces and the start of what could be greatness for others. Who will climb up to the mountain of the gods and who will sink forever to the underworld?

KRd8pBF.jpg

The show opens with the brooding riff of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” as Nelson Frye makes his entrance, clad in an outfit that wouldn’t be out of place in a period drama movie shooting. There may only be 44 fans in attendance, but considering the premium ticket price and the lack of any track record for RotO yet, they are as hardcore as they come and willing to pay that extra NGW nostalgia coin.

Frye: “It’s such a privilege to be back in Athens in front of you all again! You all know I’m wrestling in tonight's big main event match, but before that, I wanted to come out here and get something off my chest. See, ever since that match was announced, nay, ever since I joined Ring of the Olympians, there have been questions amidst the overall excitement. Isn’t he past his prime? Hasn’t it been six years since he last wrestled? Does he still have it? Well let me tell you right here, I became NGW Heavyweight champion three times and NGW Tag Team champion two more for a reason. I won and held those titles, just like I was trusted with the mask of Captain Hero, for a reason. And I am every bit as driven now as I was driven then. To win a title once again. To prove the naysayers wrong. To ascend once more to the top of the mount…”

bGfQcLk.jpg

The music of “The Bratva Bruiser” Dovydas Vidmar interrupts Frye and the big Russian comes out in a slick suit, clearly here to talk, not fight.

Vidmar: “I’ve spent way too many years of my career listening to you talk and talk. I’ve had enough…”

Fans start chanting “Moscow Mauler” as Vidmar is talking, the nickname Marat Khoklov had while employed by NGW and leading the Czars, a group that Vidmar was a member of.

Vidmar: “You won’t be seeing him here, so might as well shut up! Best you can do is put his name in your mouth, well I’ve been his right hand man. I had his back every time he fought for that Heavyweight title. I was a loyal soldier. So loyal, I always put him first and never wrestled for that title myself. It was always Marat first. Well he’s no longer around, so I can finally put myself first. If there’s one man who needs to win the RotO Championship tonight, that man is me!”

LFcPDbz.jpg

The sounds of NOLA’s supergroup DOWN announces the arrival of “The Louisiana Pitbull” Robert Howard, who comes out and joins the other two men inside the ring.

Howard: “You see, Vidmar, that’s the difference between us. I too was a member of a group, The League of Heroes, you might have heard of them? I also had a successful career but never won the big singles title. I had Nelson’s back here and shared the tag team titles with him, twice. But I never felt bitter, or overlooked, or left out. I need that title just as bad as you do. But more than that, I live for the fight. May the biggest, baddest wrestler win!”

AhotWa7.jpg

As if on cue, “Hammer of the North” signals the arrival of the last title contender, Petter Eriksson. He may be the oldest of the four, but he’s also the tallest, biggest and every bit as ripped as Robert Howard. The announcing duo comments on all those, as well as his two NGW Tag Team title reigns, while the security staff hits the ring to prevent things from getting physical. Eriksson simply glares at his three opponents and the tension eventually boils over as security convinces everyone to return backstage and save it for the match later tonight.

Women’s championship Round Robin tournament Round 1 match

QncF7Hi.jpg25UZG0h.pngp9Ni2cl.jpg

Florida Simard vs Serena Ventura

Serena Ventura made her entrance first, the young rookie from Germany not really getting a response from the audience at this point. Frenchwoman Florida Simard fared slightly better as hardcore fans reacted to the only woman on the roster to have been trained in the NGW dojo. Almost even in size and skill, the two competitors were however very different in terms of character. Ventura immediately showcased that textbook babyface inner fire that finally endeared her to the audience as she got to work on the laid-back and slightly overconfident Simard as soon as the match began. Once the opening salvo was over, Simard wasn’t shy about pulling her opponent’s hair to halt her momentum, gaining control of the match but losing the support of any fans still rooting for her by that point. Making the best of her longer experience, Simard kept applying the pressure on her opponent but at times seemed to lack a certain sense of urgency. That and Ventura’s passion allowed the German to take the heat and even create a couple of hopeful comeback moments, but eventually she was suckered in by Simard’s unorthodox pacing and sudden outbursts of big moves, with the French wrestler getting the pin shortly before the ten minute mark to score her first two points in the tournament.

Winner: Florida Simard

Aud Valkyrie vs MAYA

A veteran of over two decades and the most experienced member of the division, Aud Valkyrie entered this match as the heavy favorite. The hard hitting Norwegian has been hailed as a “best kept secret” by some and “a wasted opportunity” by others, since she was never able to work in Japan where her style would have been a perfect fit. MAYA was in no mood to simply lay on her back though and the charismatic Japanese showed why she held the EWA Women’s title during her excursion in Europe as well as currently being one third of the Triangle champions in Japan’s 5SSW. Valkyrie started hot with a series of stiff shots and quick takedowns, but failing to get a quick pin or submission, her style quickly became predictable and a little repetitive. MAYA made the best of that situation to take the fight to where she’s most comfortable, trading holds back and forth as she riled the fans up to cheer for her. Valkyrie hadn’t said her final word however and despite getting badly outperformed, she was able to sneak in a sharp knee while MAYA was working the crowd to take the wind out of her lungs and hold her down just long enough for the three count.

Winner: Aud Valkyrie

Gypsy Rose vs Paula Edwards

Who’d have thought a gypsy character in 2020 would not only avoid being called gimmicky and offensive, it would actually be a huge hit with the fans too! It helps that the woman behind the character chose a more free-spirited, hippy-like approach instead of playing to all the stereotypes and that connection with the crowd also helped the match have that extra oomph, since Edwards basically steamrolled past her opponent, barely allowing her to land a single offensive move. Fans were unusually sympathetic to the babyface in peril being destroyed and Edwards wrapped up the first part of the show with a dominant victory.

Winner: Paula Edwards

Alberto Montero & Giovanni Bruno vs Ryushi Ryusaki & Tomohiko Yamagata

Part 2 of the show kicked off with a “what could have been” tag team match, featuring four homegrown NGW prospects who never had the time to make it big before that promotion closed. Montero’s hispanic machismo naturally complemented the sleazy lounge lizard character of Italy’s Giovanni Bruno as the two of them took every shortcut they could in order to stay on top of their opponents, with the match basically telling the story of that team being on the same page against the odd pairing of Ryusaki and Yamagata, a violent unpredictable striker and beloved super junior respectively. Despite clearly being the more talented team, the two Japanese wrestlers just couldn’t get it together and Yamagata walked into the “slower, but more powerful punch” that is Bruno’s comedy finisher for the pin.

Winners: Alberto Montero & Giovanni Bruno

Dovydas Vidmar vs Nelson Frye vs Petter Eriksson vs Robert Howard

At long last, it was time for the main event of the evening. Arguably the promotion’s top four male stars (some would also call them “nostalgia acts”) squared off in a free-for-all to determine the first ever RotO champion. Petter Eriksson came out first, the biggest of four setting the tone for the big fight ahead. Dovydas Vidmar followed, this time in his ring gear and carrying his trademark bottle of vodka, from which he took one final sip after completing his entrance routine. Robert Howard joined them next inside the ring, glaring at his opponents and clearly in the mood for a fight. Last out was Nelson Frye, beloved babyface, multi time champion and probably the favorite to win the match. Once the bell rang, Frye shook hands with a reluctant but professional Eriksson, his friend and longtime teammate Howard, but got a headbutt to the face from Vidmar, essentially starting the match.

Howard and Frye instinctively teamed up to throw Vidmar out the ring, then turned on the big man Eriksson for the same. Once it was down to the two of them, they paused, shook hands once more and started to circle the ring for what promised to be a sportsmanlike contest. This of course was soon denied by a recovered Vidmar, who pulled Frye’s leg to take him out of the ring and replace him for a hot-tipped exchange of blows with Howard. Eriksson soon joined them and as they all traded strikes back and forth, they painted a picture of what fans could expect from this match: big tough men throwing big blows at each other, simple and visceral as that. No complicated technical wrestling, no flashy aerial maneuvers, just an old school brawl with a pace and style that wouldn’t be out of place in Japan and fan’s of the classic “King’s Road” presentation. Even after Frye got back into the ring, he only did a simple -but impressive- belly to back suplex on Vidmar to create some space and throw in a few strikes of his own. Things picked up as two time tag team champions Frye and Howard worked together to bring the big Norwegian down, only for Eriksson to rebound out of the blue with a decapitating double lariat! With Howard still reeling, Eriksson went for the pin on the fallen Frye but before he could make the cover, Vidmar spit vodka in his face to blind him and steal the pin for himself!

Winner AND NEW RotO Champion: Dovydas Vidmar

Forge of Fury

Sunday, Week 3 January 2020

Athens, Southern Mediterranean, Europe

Attendance: 90

bGfQcLk.jpg

The show begins with the music of Dovydas Vidmar as the new RotO Champion makes his way to the ring, title carried on his shoulder.

Vidmar: Last time I was in this ring, I said I was going to carve my own path and I did just that. I was up against not one, not two but three top tier opponents and still left the building as the first ever Ring of the Olympians Champion!

KRd8pBF.jpgLFcPDbz.jpg

The fans' boo turns to cheers as Nelson Frye and Robert Howard come out to join Vidmar in the ring.

Frye: I'm not the kind of man to complain over a loss, neither is Robert here. However, we can't overlook the way you won that title and neither can these people. It’s only right to...

lR9LQdX.jpg12XzW2n.jpg

Alberto Montero and Giovanni Bruno make their way out of the curtain, but do not proceed to join the others between the ropes. Instead, Bruno produces a mic from inside his shiny white leisure suit, complete with sparkly decoration all over.

Bruno: I say-eh, for someone who “doesn’t complain over a loss” you sure are a terrible liar on top of a sore loser… For over twenty years now, every time things don’t go your way, you somehow talk your way into a rematch or some sort of title opportunity. But the fact remains, two weeks ago, you lost! Me and Alberto here… we won!

Frye and Howard discuss something off the mic for a moment as tension builds…

Frye: You know what, you’re right. So I ran this through Robert here… how about we solve this inside the ring, you two big winners… against the Gentleman and the Pitbull?!

Fans cheer at the suggestion while Montero and Bruno accept the challenge off the mic, retreating to prepare as everyone else leaves the ring after them.

Blair Kerrigan vs Spider Isako

Kerrigan and her “Irish Fire” character received a pretty lukewarm response from the fans during her entrance, unlike the much more theatrical entrance and outfit of Isako, who seems to be RotO’s incarnation of the “Gothic Grappler” gimmick that Fusae Etsuko made famous. This was a pretty simple and strike-heavy match between the scrappy, energetic Kerrigan and Isako’s Japanese strong style. If anything, it introduced both women to the fans although the lack of experience on both sides was painfully obvious for the ten or so minutes the match went on before Isako caught Kerrigan with a Jumping Knee Strike to get the pin.

Winner: Spider Isako

Cassie O’Peter vs Machiko Matsuda

Two more ladies in the title tournament for the audience to warm up to, although many fans seemed to already know Matsuda thanks to her excursion time spent with EWA in Germany. Cassie O’Peter seemed to fare better than her usual partner earlier and it was largely thanks to the technical skill she displayed on top of her striking arsenal, but Matsuda had the experience edge and wasn’t shy about flaunting it, whether she was slapping her rookie opponent around or posing for the crowd. It was this setup that really had fans rooting for O’Peter and booing Matsuda, with the latter getting a little carried away trying to antagonize the crowd, turning her back for a bit too long and allowing O’Peter to capture her in a Scorpion Deathlock smack dab in the center of the ring. Trapped and with nowhere to go, Matsuda was forced to submit, hurting her ego as much as she hurt her point tally in the tournament. O’Peter really sold her big victory by running outside the ring to celebrate with the fans, many of which seemed to be female as she apparently is able to really connect with that part of the audience.

Winner: Cassie O'Peter

AhotWa7.jpg

Petter Eriksson makes his entrance next, the big Norwegian clearly not in the best of moods as he grabs a microphone to speak.

Erikkson: For a brief moment, I could taste victory. I made a return from behind, against the odds, only for Vidmar to steal my win and the title. And instead of getting a match to rectify that, I’m not even scheduled to wrestle tonight. Instead, I get to watch Nelson Frye and Robert Howard talk their way into another big match, then maybe another title shot…

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="

https://www.youtube.com/embed/EjBZJJM20h8" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

eyZU7C1.jpg

Eriksson’s speech is interrupted by the music of Petrov Yakovlev as the Belarussian brawler makes his way to the ring and grabs the mic out of his hand, barking something in his native language that apparently no one in the audience understands. What’s obvious though is the intensity in his tone, the way he seems to be antagonizing Eriksson before the latter gets on the mic again.

Eriksson: I was wrestling before you were even born, kid. I kicked your ass back in developmental. I have no problem doing it again.

With that, Eriksson drops the mic and returns backstage.

Ryushi Ruysaki vs Tomohiko Yamagata

A match in the aftermath of the two men’s defeat against Montero and Bruno during the inaugural RotO show, this one felt pretty personal from the opening bell already. The two Japanese stars did a great job of telling a story about the vicious Ruysaki who’ll stop at nothing to achieve stardom and the humble Yamagata, a man who keeps his head down and works on his craft like no other in order to perfect it. Essentially a clash of character, showmanship and charisma versus pure in-ring skill, this match turned out actually better than might have been expected and in a pretty intense finale, Ruysaki hit a vicious spinning head kick to take his opponent down for the pin.

Ryusaki’s music soon changes into AC/DC’s “Hail Cesar” and the Greek Punisher himself walks out to the ring as fans cheer their fellow countryman.

The Gentleman & The Pitbull vs Alberto Montero & Giovanni Bruno

The much anticipated main event that was set up during the opening segment did not disappoint, pitting the two-time NGW Tag Team champions against a pair of young prospects that never really got the chance to shine in NGW’s stacked roster before the company stopped putting on shows. Bruno especially brought that Spanish fire and intensity he’s known for, getting the match off to a strong start against The Louisiana Pitbull. Howard was smarter in the way he conducted himself and soon had the upper hand, until a sneaky hair pull from Bruno on the apron turned things around. Not long after, Howard found himself in a 2 on 1 situation on the heels’ corner, with Montero and Bruno using quick tags to always keep the fresh man in and drop a flurry of offense in hopes of chopping the big brawler down. Frye, desperate for the hot tag, tried to rally the fans in support of his teammate and Howard indeed got a burst of energy that saw him come back, however it was not meant to be as Montero cut him off with a desperate tackle before he could tag in the Englishman.

Bruno saw his chance and dragged his partner close enough to forcefully tag himself in and take advantage of the fallen Howard before he could recover, much to the fans’ dismay. Slimy as ever, Bruno slapped and taunted his opponent around but it all backfired when apparently something snapped inside Howard, who for a moment seemed completely impervious to pain! Feeding off the blows, Howard got a second wind and knocked down the cocky Italian with a huge headbutt, before stumbling to his corner to finally tag in Frye. The Gentleman took to the ring all fired up but before he could lay it into Bruno, the Lounge Lizard made a cowardly retreat to tag in Montero. Fresher and more experienced, Frye had no problem controlling the match and things came full circle with he tagged in Howard, ending things much like they started as Howard hit the Chaos Theory to pin Montero.

The accent from Down Under gave away Sionis' identity before Florida Simard turned around on her heel to face him. She had just finished cutting her pre-show promo and was off to unpack her personal merchandise to sell during the intermission. He was preparing to make his main show debut at Forge of Fury, but he didn't seem too nervous. Why should he be after all, he'd been in this business for 15 years and probably cut enough promos at DIW. Nope, he probably wasn't going to ask her for pointers.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>"Oui?"</p><p> </p><p>

Of course she responded in French. This wasn't going to be easy for him. He was the veteran, but she was a much bigger star here than him. He was comfortable getting his way in the locker room, but he had always shared it with other guys. This was not DIW. This was different.</p><p> </p><p>

"You, uhm, you familiar with that Witch Doctor kid?" he began. "Showed up high out of his mind before the first show? Yeah, well, I caught him smoking another one outside the venue earlier. Had to slap it straight out of his hand. Slap some sense into him too, he promised to give up the habit."</p><p> </p><p>

"Oui, what's that got to do with me?" she answered with a shrug. "You looking to ah-gossip?"</p><p> </p><p>

Cesar tilted his head sideways and sighed. So she was playing ignorant, huh? This wasn't going to be easy at all. Not like he could slap some sense into her too.</p><p> </p><p>

"No, Florida. Petrov told me you're into the same stuff, ever since your days together back in the dojo. I'm here to tell you to give it up, it kills your cardio and makes you a lot less safe to work with."</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="eyZU7C1.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/eyZU7C1.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /><p>

<em>But how does he know?</em></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

She simply snorted, then smiled. "You're not my dad" she told him. "You're old enough to <em>be</em> my dad, perhaps, but you don't get to tell me what to do with my life, monsieur."</p><p> </p><p>

With that, she just spun on her heel again and began to walk away. Maybe she'd blaze one after all, before unpacking the merch. Meanwhile, Cesar Sionis was so stunned, he could do nothing but stare.</p><p> </p><p>

Alberto Montero makes his entrance at the start of the show, looking all confident as he hits all four corners of the ring to pose for the fans before settling down and motioning for a microphone.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Montero:</strong> Tonight is my night! You see, I’ve been on fire since Ring of the Olympians became a thing and management knows this. They understand I shouldn’t be punished for things I didn’t do and you know what I didn’t do? I did not get pinned! Oh that’s right, it was Giovanni Bruno who was pinned, not me! That is why tonight I get to claim my spot as the number one contender for the RotO Championship after I beat Robert Howard, then continue to become the NEW RotO champion!</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="</p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NT714sj011w" rel="external nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/embed/NT714sj011w"</a> frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe><p>

The music of Dovydas Vidmar blasts in response to Montero’s speech and the current RotO champion makes his entrance to a decent reaction, mostly because he interrupted Montero rather than because fans genuinely like him.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Vidmar:</strong> I’ve wrestled Howard one on one before. He’s one hell of a competitor, but I know I can beat him. You, I’m not that familiar with, but I am itching to slap your big mouth shut! Just so you know, I’ll be watching you very closely tonight but even if you manage to defeat the American, there is no way, no way you are taking this from me!</p><p> </p><p>

Vidmar holds the RotO Championship up high and Montero gets in his face, the two men trading some heated words off the mic as Vidmar’s music plays again. Eventually, Montero leaves the ring and is off to prepare for his match later tonight, giving Vidmar a little more time at the spotlight before he too leaves the ring.</p><p>

Aud Valkyrie vs Cassie O’Peter</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

It’s veteran versus rookie in the opening contest of the night, with both competitors coming in hot after winning their first round matches. There was little to no high flying on display, instead the match was worked in a very traditionalist manner, heavy on the strikes and grappling back and forth. Sadly, the two women’s styles didn’t seem to click really well and the action felt a little off key but the finish ended the match with a bang as O’Peter somehow tricked her opponent into underestimating her and caught her with a surprise roll up for the win.</p><p>

Florida Simard vs Gysy Rose</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The next match delivered all the high flying action that had been missing from the opener, with Rose especially continuing to impress with her skills following her RotO debut. Simard made good use of her more well rounded style in an attempt to ground her nimble opponent, but Rose remained on the move and kept attacking from all angles, well aware that a more static approach would be her doom. What brought about her doom though was her inexperience, as she miscalculated the timing on a springboard dive; Simard rolled out of the way to send her opponent crashing onto the mat, then unleashed a flurry of offense to capitalize on the opening and score the pin just moments before the ten minute mark.</p><p>

Paula Edwards vs Serena Ventura</strong></p></div><p></p><p>

At 245lb of muscle and mean intentions, Paula Edwards looks like she’d make short work of half the men’s roster so facing her is never an enviable position to be in. That’s exactly what Serena Ventura found out the hard way, barely landing a move and even when she did, it never looked like it had any effect on Edwards, who threw her around the ring like a rag doll. As one sided as a match can get, this one dragged on for quite a bit but that only served to establish Edwards as a sadistic heel and garner sympathy for Ventura who refused to give up regardless of how bad she got beat up before the pinfall that felt almost merciful.</p><p>

Cesar Sionis vs Ryushi Ruysaki</strong></p></div><p></p><p>

Easily the most physical match of the night, Sionis and Ruysaki traded some hard hitting blows back and forth, often intentionally dropping their guard and daring each other to strike as hard as possible. Fans were all too happy with the outcome and seeing an even, competitive match was a welcome change of pace after Edwards had previously demolished her opposition. Ruysaki seemed to be struggling with his balance after a snap suplex from Sionis sent him crashing neck first onto the canvas, but the incident also fired him up to throw caution to the wind and attack with renewed aggression. Despite several warnings from the referee, Ruysaki seemed to be lost in his own murderous intent and for the safety of all parties involved, a disqualification was called to audible boos from the crowd who clearly wanted to see more than just ten or so minutes of this.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner: Cesar Sionis</strong></p><p><strong>

<strong>Frye:</strong> I’ve had fans come up to me and ask if I’m mad or jealous about Robert competing for the title, so I wanted to take a moment and publicly set the record straight. Robert is a long time friend. He’s been my other half as tag team champions, twice. I could not be any happier for him. If I’m mad about something, it’s the hoops he’s made to jump through before he finally gets his title match. So tonight, I’m gonna be at his corner to support him and make sure no one interferes with the match, no dirty tricks or cheating. And once he’s done with tonight, I’ll be at his side again when he wrestles for the RotO championship. He deserves to win a major singles title and I am looking forward to celebrating that moment with him soon.</p><p>

Petter Eriksson vs Petrov Yakovlev</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Another match that started off pretty physical, this one got paced down once Eriksson was able to grab his opponent in a hold and take things from a brawl into a grappling contest. There was quite a story to be told there between a tactically smart veteran who switched to his alternative, criminally underrated skillset and a passionate yet pretty one-sided up and comer who gave it his all. Oddly enough, this match was way less one sided that one would have expected, although Eriksson’s sloppiness at times might have been to blame as it created some surprise openings for Yakovlev to get back in the game, although ultimately the Belarussian fell to the Northern Lights Bomb of his opponent.</p><p>

“Macho Man” Alberto Montero vs “The Louisiana Pitbull” Robert Howard (with Nelson Frye)</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Both Montero and Howard are big heavy hitters. They are tough, resilient men. They have the experience as well as a track record that’s not as filled with titles as it should be. This was more or less a mirror match and it became very apparent after the opening exchange that this would come down to stamina, endurance and a real hunger for victory. Both men tapped into their fighting spirit to keep going as they traded blows, hitting bigger and bigger moves with each sequence as the match built up to a crescendo.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="12XzW2n.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/12XzW2n.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Giovanni Bruno chose to make an appearance as the match got close to the 15 minute mark, but Nelson Frye proved true to his word when he blocked Bruno’s way to the ring before the Lounge Lizard could get near the ropes. True to his sleazy character, the Italian tried to fast talk his way through and when he realized that wasn’t going to happen, ended up getting chased to the back by Frye. With no one but the two competitors now to focus on, the match amped up the drama as Montero and Howard traded finisher attempts, the near falls until Howard finally burst into a spear that was enough to keep the Spaniard down for the count.</p><p>

Tomohiko Yamagata & Wes Stryker vs The Fashionistas

This time the show went straight to the action as Yamagata and Stryker were up in action against the veteran team of Italians Giancarlo Morelli and Roberto Milano. The two cocky athletes have had plenty of time to hone their skills as well as their characters and after a good start from hotshot rookie Wes Stryker, they worked together to distract him and gain control of the match while firing up the crowd who responded in boos. Stryker sold all the moves and even used his chain wrestling skills for the occasional counter and hope spot, only to be shut down by his opponents. This dominance couldn’t be converted into a pinfall however, especially since the Fashionistas opted for cocky pins that didn’t throw their full weight on Stryker, who kept kicking out of covers. On one such occasion, he seemed to get an adrenaline surge that had him fighting back long enough to make the hot tag to Yamagata, who hit the ring flying with a huge springboard crossbody on Morelli. After that point it was all Yamagata, as the NGW dojo graduate dropkicked Milano off the apron and hit a sequence of moves on Morelli, before putting him in a Figure Four Leglock that had him tapping the mat like a madman.

Winners: Tomohiko Yamagata & Wes Stryker

A pre-recorded message from the RotO champion, Dovydas Vidmar, is shown on the screen above the ring entrance.

Vidmar: Finally… tonight I get my hands on Robert Howard, one on one. No more aspiring challengers jumping in between us, no other competitors in the ring, just me and him. You call yourself the Louisiana Pitbull, huh? Sounds about right to me, with Nelson Frye yanking your chain. You’re nothing but his lapdog. Tonight, I’ll show you who’s the alpha dog in this yard.

Machiko Matsuda vs MAYA

An intense, personal match, this one featured two women who used to team as The Kanto Express during their European excursion and fans were excited to see them butt heads as part of the tournament. Another openly contested battle, this one saw a lot of counters, reversals and dodging, as if to emphasize how well each competitor knows the other’s style and tactics. It was so right down the middle actually, the match reached its time limit without a clear winner and the two gave each other a nod of respect after the bell, splitting the points between them as they headed back to the locker room.

Result: Draw

Backstage, Robert Howard is busy doing some last stretches and a bit of shadowboxing as he’s getting ready for his big main event title match. Nelson Frye is observing nearby and turns to face the camera, apparently another pre-recorded message that airs for the fans in attendance.

Frye: I said I was going to be on Robert’s corner to prevent any shenanigans and I did just that. I said he’d win that match to compete for the RotO Championship and he did just that. We’re both men of our word. Men of honor. Something Dovydas Vidmar isn’t. I respect his skill. His power. Don’t have to like him to give him that. But I do not respect his tactics. His vodka spitting and bottle smashing. None of that tonight. I’ll be there to personally make sure of that. May the best man win!

Cesar Sionis vs Petter Eriksson

Anyone who expected flips or a technical masterclass here, probably hasn’t been paying attention to Sionis and Eriksson. This was a classic fistfight, stiff and hard hitting, between two men out to prove who’s the toughest. No one ever left their feet for a move, although Sionis did make sure they left the ring so he could tap into his hardcore experience in DIW down under. However Eriksson is no stranger to such situations and he was able to instantly turn things around when he raised his huge boot to block an incoming chair shot by kicking the chair straight into the face of Sionis. Rolling his groggy opponent back into the ring, Eriksson avoided the countout and a weapons-heavy brawl, which allowed him to get some more moves in and hit the Northern Lights Bomb for the pin.

Winner: Petter Eriksson

The battering sound of Thorsten Sigurdsson’s theme blasts as the Blood Axe makes his entrance. Petter Eriksson observes cautiously as the mohawked youngster gets in the ring and in his face for an intense staredown, made even more intense by the fact that the song keeps playing throughout the entire segment, until Eriksson backs away with a “not today” expression.

RotO Championship match

“The Bratva Bruiser” Dovydas Vidmar © vs “The Louisiana Pitbull” Robert Howard (with Nelson Frye)

Several shows in the making and based on a rivalry that’s been ongoing for many more years, the main event did not disappoint. Unlike the usual format thus far, this wasn’t your typical slow burner main event though. Instead, Vidmar and Howard threw themselves at each other from the opening bell, not quite in a wild frantic brawl but certainly hitting hard and giving no quarter.

lR9LQdX.jpg12XzW2n.jpg

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Alberto Montero and Giovanni Bruno did make an appearance after the first five minutes of the match, though true to his word, Nelson Frye got in their face and prevented them from interfering. Things did eventually come to blows outside the ring just as inside it, with the double brawl really firing up the fans anew. Despite being outnumbered, Frye held his ground and forced the two men to a retreat. Meanwhile, the action at rinside did seem to draw Howard’s attention more than it should and Vidmar was able to gain the upper hand, forcing Howard to claw his way back into the match just as Frye was fighting another uphill battle 2 on 1. With the challenger building up more and more steam, Vidmar reached for the vodka bottle he brings to the ring but, whether intentionally or not, Frye had knocked it off the apron during the brawl and nothing was there!

eyZU7C1.jpg

Just as it seemed that Vidmar’s trick (or lack thereof) was Howard’s big chance, Petrov Yakovlev appeared through the crowd and jumped the guardrail, taking advantage of Frye being busy fending off Montero and Bruno on the other side of the ring! Yakovlev slid into the ring just as Howard was about to make the cover and with tension rising, so did Vidmar slowly…

WHAT? HE HIT VIDMAR!

HOWARD TOO!

Fans nearly lost it as Yakovlev took out both competitors and the referee was forced to call for the bell.

Result: Double DQ

59

Absolute chaos ensued as the match ended and Yakovlev rushed out to attack Nelson Frye, making it a 3 on 1 situation. Numbers finally caught up to Frye and he was brought down, only for Robert Howard to stumble his way towards the fray after a hard fought match. Not that he was able to do much against Montero, Bruno and Yakovlev, who made short work of him and then hit the ring for a beatdown on Vidmar as well!

Spring Rites

Sunday, Week 1 March 2020

Athens, Southern Mediterranean, Europe

Attendance: 67

lR9LQdX.jpg12XzW2n.jpgeyZU7C1.jpg

Alberto Montero, Giovanni Bruno and Petrov Yakovlev open the show with a march to the ring, drawing perhaps the most passionate hail of boos in RotO to date. Yakovlev is serious and broody, letting it all bounce off of him, while Montero and Bruno seem to enjoy it as they soak in the crowd’s hatred.

Bruno: Ah, yes, the jealousy of the mediocre people in the face of true star power. Comes with being a red carpet A-Lister like me. Now now, settle down and let the real men do the talking here.

Montero: You ungrateful wimps, with your crispy snacks and 5kg one rep max deadlifts, you should be thanking us. That’s right, thanking us, for making sure you get your money’s worth in this ring. No one wants to see two old, washed up has beens in the main event. As a matter of fact, no one wants to see them at all. I know we here don’t. And we’re doing something about it. Enough is enough. Out with the old and in with the new!

Bruno: We’ve made it our mission to put these veterans out of commission. We will no longer be overshadowed by the Vidmars and the Fryes and the Howards of this company.

We are the New Breed and we’re taking over!

Gypsy Rose vs Serena Ventura

With two losses each in their two respective matches so far, Gypsy Rose and Serena Ventura entered this match hungry for the win and their first two points in the tournament. Between Rose’s fast, mobile style and Ventura’s energetic brawling, there was a lot of exciting back and forth in the match. The German’s plan seemed to be all about grounding her opponent with big strikes and the occasional hold, while the Wrestling Nomad stayed on the move and got the crowd going with her flashy aerial maneuvers. Neither seemed to enjoy a distinct advantage for long and that showed all the way to the finish, where Rose slingshot herself into the ring with a crossbody; Ventura got the timing right in blocking the move and catching her mid-air, but lacked the strength and footwork to make anything of it. As a result, Rose’s momentum carried her over and into a rolling pinfall predicament that won her the match.

Winner: Gypsy Rose

Aud Valkyrie vs Paula Edwards

So far in the tournament, Paula Edwards proved herself to be an unstoppable force and if anyone could stop her, veteran Aud Valkyrie seemed to be the top candidate. The Norwegian seemed to pace herself and used hit-and-run tactics in hopes of exhausting her larger opponent, but nothing seemed to really get under the skin of her massive American opponent. It only took a few minutes for Valkyrie to slow down and lower her hands a bit, her 39 years of age catching up with her conditioning, before Edwards saw her chance and made a move. It was all Edwards from there and the big brawler from Colorado made short work of another opponent before hitting the Powerbomb Pin for another two points in the race.

Winner: Paula Edwards

Cassie O’Peter vs Florida Simard

Dublin’s hot rookie “Classy” Cassie O’Peter has certainly proven herself to be a dark horse in the tournament, with big wins over Aud Valkyrie and Machiko Matsuda so far. NGW dojo graduate Florida Simard was her scheduled opponent and the Frenchwoman seemed poised to stop O’Peter’s winning streak and continue her own. To the trained eye, it was obvious that the more experienced Simard was leading the match, while also taking it upon herself to keep fans engaged with spectacular moves and interaction. O’Peter did her best to ground the opposition and work on Simard’s legs in hopes of taking away her mobility, but it was luck, not tactics that won the day for her when she managed to catch the overconfident, laid back Simard from a schoolboy cradle out of nowhere.

Winner: Cassie O’Peter

Backstage footage is shown on the screen above the wrestlers’ entrance. Nelson Frye and Robert Howard are having a discussion with Dovydas Vidmar.

Frye: Listen to me! You heard them, they’re out for us all! They attacked us all last time! We have to stick together!

Vidmar: This isn’t your League of Heroes and I will no longer be ordered around!

Vidmar takes a swig of vodka

Frye: It’s not about orders, damn it! It’s about survival! The three of us are scheduled to fight them tonight!

With that, Vidmar spits out the rest of his vodka in shock and the feed cuts off.

Cesar Sionis vs Tomohiko Yamagata

Yamagata started the match hot, keeping up the momentum coming off his tag victory over the Fashionistas. His speed gave him the edge over the larger and much older Sionis, who could only withstand his opponent’s opening salvo of moves. Once that was over though, Yamagata took it easier in order not to burn up all his fuel too fast. It did provide an opportunity to showcase how he can also strike and grapple on top of flying, but once up close and personal with Sionis, the Greek Punisher quickly turned things around with a decapitating lariat! Now firmly in control, the hard hitting Sionis was able to use all the tricks he’s mastered while working in Australia’s deathmatch-heavy DIW and really brought the punishment on his younger opponent. Audience was split between supporting the (sort of) local hero and cheering for Yamagata to make a comeback, which the wrestlers played up by doing a bunch of hope spots with Yamagata fighting back and Sionis shutting him down before the NGW dojo graduate was able to get some offense rolling and hit a desperate Suicide Splash to score the pin.

Winner: Tomohiko Yamagata

Petter Eriksson comes out of the curtain but doesn’t enter the ring. Neither does his music play. Instead, he remains at the wrestlers’ entrance with a microphone in hand and speaks his mind.

Eriksson: So, some young tough kid wants to make a name at my expense? Well step right up! I have defeated that punk Yakovlev, I pinned your hero returned from abroad Cesar Sionis and I can certainly teach a lesson to some youngster who thinks he’s all powerful just because he looks mean in a mohawk!

In an instant, a man wearing a black mask comes running out of the entrance and whacks Eriksson from behind with a steel chair! Much smaller than Thorsten Sigurdsson though, who could this mystery attacker be?

The New Breed (Montero, Bruno & Yakovlev) vs Dovydas Vidmar, Nelson Frye & Robert Howard

As intense a confrontation as any RotO main event yet, this one kicked off with Giovanni Bruno’s comedy spots of uncomfortably close-up grappling (and grinding, if need be) against Vidmar. As a result, tension was lifted so it could be built back up and a furious Vidmar began raining down the clubbing blows on the cowardly Lounge Lizard, who was all too happy to retreat and tag Yakovlev in. Again, having Vidmar against the man who attacked him two weeks ago sent him into an offensive frenzy, picking up the pace of the brawl until Howard tagged himself in. He and Vidmar seemed to argue about it for a moment, whether the RotO Champion could still go or if he needed a break, which created an opening for Yakovlev to shove them into each other and sandwich Howard between his teammate and the ringpost. Now firmly in control, Yakovlev focused his offense on Howard before tagging in Montero to continue breaking down the Louisiana Pitbull. Using 3 on 1 tactics, the New Breed beat down Howard on their corner but then Montero got a little overconfident and whipped him to the ropes, only for Howard to bounce back with a huge shoulder tackle that left them both lying on the mat. Struggling to make it to their respective corners, Montero and Howard tagged in Bruno and Frye at the same time, leading to a crescendo of action, only for Eriksson’s mysterious attacker to once again make an appearance and swing his chair at Vidmar, Howard and eventually Frye, ending the match on a disqualification only to then pull off his hood and reveal himself as…

The four men were a peculiar sight, gathered as they were around the table of the taverna, Greece's average traditional style of restaurant. They were foreign, no doubt about that, but they hadn't ordered moussaka or any of the usual tourists trap dishes, nor had they gotten a salad to be split among them, as the locals would usually joke about travelling foreigners. No, despite their looks and origin, they had ordered a big platter of meat in the middle: steaks, chops, patties, chicken wings, a wild mix of animal protein surrounded by a hearty amount of fresh fried potatoes. They were all big, muscular men used to large servings and they had all spent enough time in the country to be acting like locals by now.

"It is agreed then, we slash ticket prices after the next show" Nelson Frye wrapped up the previous conversation before taking a sip of his ice cold lager. Among the four of them who had chipped in the money to start a reboot of the old NGW as Ring of the Olympians, Nelson would usually preside over the meetings. It was a role he had the charisma and respect to play, which is why he'd also lead the wrestlers' court to sort out backstage issues and deal with minor transgressions.

"Yeah we're not counting on gate income yet anyway, plus the economy's on the downswing and wrestling's not exactly topping the list of cool things to be into" Robert Howard agreed, his Louisiana accent somewhat heavier after more than a few cold ones. "Might as well lure in the fans and capitalize on it later. Same with broadcasting shows online, I think we'll all agree that can wait until we can set up the mail order side of merchandising."

Everyone else mumbled something in agreement, between bites of meat and sips of beer.

"There's something else me and Dov wanted to bring up though" Howard continued. Nelson raised an intrigued eyebrow in response. He might have spent most of his career teaming with or in some way aligned with the Louisiana Pitbull, but he was aware that off the stage, Robert and Vidmar were best buds. The big Russian looked around, caught by surprise in the center of attention while in the middle of his chewing process. Took a while to down that bite, adding some unnecessary dramatic tension to the moment.

"We want to start a wrestling school again" he finally spoke up. "Me and Rob, training people so the company can have homegrown talent." Frye took a moment to entertain the thought. It didn't help that NGW's dojo used to be helmed by the Moscow Mauler, Marat Khoklov, the man in whose shadow Vidmar had spent most of his career. "I don't know boys, it's a pretty big investment. It'll take a while to pay off and the operating expenses could kill us till then" Frye argued, but Vidmar waved it away. "No no, very bare bones stuff. We've done our calculations, fifty thousand to set up and less than a thousand per month to operate."

"Uhm, guys?" Petter Eriksson's voice cut through. The big man from Norway had been silent for the most part, consumed as he was by the screen on his phone. Which was unusual, because he was never a heavy social media used. "You might wanna check this out" he said, turning the screen for all to see.

The show begins with Nelson Frye, Robert Howard and Petter Eriksson making an entrance together. Neither man seems to be in a particularly good mood as Frye gets on the mic.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Frye:</strong> So… New Breed, huh? Catchy brand, I’ll give you that. Gotta get the marketing stuff right if you wanna make a name for yourselves, I suppose. See, we get where you’re coming from. New guys trying to break out at the expense of the already established ones. That’s ambition. I applaud that. But it means nothing without respect. There is a reason that guys like us or Dovydas Vidmar are at the top of the food chain. Wrestling is not for the weak and we’ve already been doing it for twenty years, each. Just to get through so long with no injuries, without ever missing a beat and still be on top of your game, that’s saying something. That deserves respect. And if your skulls are too thick to get that, well we’ll just have to beat it into them tonight!</p><p>

Machiko Matsuda vs Spider Isako</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Not seen in RotO for quite some time, Spider Isako made her return to wrestle a tournament match against a faster and more experienced opponent in Machiko Matsuda. Clearly her hard hitting style was not complementary to Matsuda’s lucha-heavy arsenal of moves, yet despite this odd chemistry and the fact they both clearly had an off night, fans were still very much into the match and reacted to every big spot all the way to the final Jumping Knee Strike that took out Matsuda.</p><p>

Aud Valkyrie vs Blair Kerrigan</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Another “rookie vs veteran” matchup in the ongoing Round Robin tournament for the RotO Women’s title, this one featured a different matchup of styles to experience. Aud Valkyrie paced herself and tried to slow the match down with sharp kicks to her opponent’s legs, in hopes of taking away her speed, mobility and a large part of her moveset. Kerrigan would hit some big moves to pop the crowd before making a rookie mistake that allowed Valkyrie to take control of the match and this trend continued for most of the match until the Dublin native seemed to figure out the pattern and managed to top a sequence of offensive moves with her Top Rope Legdrop finisher for the pinfall victory.</p><p>

Cesar Sionis & Tomohiko Yamagata vs Transylvanian Anger (Snowman & Acheron)</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Sionis and Yamagata have been having a hard time since the debut of RotO and needed a victory bad, so teaming up here was a challenge to begin with. It didn’t help that their opponents were two big, tough men from Romania who really looked like they were out to hurt somebody. Acheron came with a mean streak and a reputation of legitimately injuring his opponents, which made for some hard hitting exchanges with Sionis and a hard fight for the smaller, high flying Yamagata. The NGW Dojo graduate took a beating at the hands of his opponents but was somehow able to escape using his speed and make the hot tag to Sionis. The Greek Punisher now had the unenviable task of facing up with Abominable Snowman, a savage neanderthal of a wild man that seemed to come straight out of the 70s. Hits barely seemed to register with the big man and slamming him was out of the question. All he did was take a few blows, then pick up Sionis and ram him back first into the corner. Yamagata tagged himself in and shot inside using the ropes for a kick that sent the Snowman reeling, just the opening he needed to start moving around and get some offense going. Apparently his plan was to come from all angles, confuse and exhaust his opponent but all it took was an instinctive reaction from the Romanian, who got his foot up and nearly kicked Yamagata’s head off his shoulders before pinning him for three.</p><p>

Cassie O’Peter vs MAYA</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Things started off hot after the break, with a fast paced match that got the audience back into the groove as both competitors set their brakes on fire and put the pedal to the metal. MAYA was gunning for a win after a bumpy ride so far in the tournament, while Cassie O’Peter had proved herself a dark horse in the race and wanted to continue her rise. There was a lot of quality grappling going back and forth in a pretty even, competitive bout but the pressure seemed to catch up with O’Peter who seemed to slip during a couple of crucial spots, allowing MAYA to put her in a Triangle Choke for the submission.</p><p>

Florida Simard vs Paula Edwards</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

No doubt one of the most highly anticipated matchups in the tournament, this one did not disappoint. Two of NGW’s next generation of women that never really got the chance to shine before that promotion closed, Simard and Edwards were also regarded as the two most likely candidates to win the entire tournament and that fact really brought the big fight atmosphere to this match. Simard used hit-and-run tactics to wear her opponent down and get some damage done without receiving any, but that’s easier said than done given the reach and killer instinct of Edwards. The massive American was able to get plenty of offense in, though Simard was the first to push her into a somewhat even match, unlike the one-sided affairs that Edwards’ matches usually are. Hope really built up for the French competitor, who did her best to stay in the fight and she was rewarded with a win out of nowhere when Erdwards got a bit too confident and let her guard down, allowing Simard to roll her up for a shocking pinfall victory!</p><p>

Nelson Frye, Robert Howard & Petter Eriksson vs The New Breed (Montero, Bruno & Ryusaki)</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

This was the next chapter in the ongoing story between the New Breed and the NGW veterans, following Ryusaki’s interference during the last show’s main event and his allegiance with the hungry youngsters. As such, the storytelling element was played up, especially since the six man setup allowed every wrestler to get in, do their part and recuperate at ringside, initially at least. Montero and Ryusaki did most of the heavy lifting for their team, with Bruno playing spoiler from the outside in a showcase of character and some of his sneaky comedy spots, like when he tied Robert Howard’s boot laces to the ringbost while Montero and Ryusaki were beating him down on the corner. Speaking of Howard, he took most of the beating for his team and sold it all for cheers from the audience, though part of it may have been improv in order to cover up him being off and having a sloppy night. With odds turning against the babyfaces, it felt like a 3 on 2 situation and to make matters worse…</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="LuKiami.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/LuKiami.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p>

...Thorsten Sigurdsson made an appearance, which led to a short but violent fistfight between him and Eriksson. At the time, Frye was the legal man so the attack was not eligible to force a disqualification, but it was enough to take a lot out of Peterson, who spent most of the remainder of the match reeling at ringside. Frye really fought an uphill battle after that and he tried to tap into his teamwork with Howard to pull through, but the Louisiana Pitbull had taken a lot of damage by that point and got caught in a sleeper hold from Ryusaki that choked him out.</p><p>

Dovydas Vidmar makes his entrance, carrying the RotO Championship on one shoulder. Not bothering much with crowd interaction, he gets in the ring and demands a microphone. As if intimidated by his very presence, the music fades down so he can talk.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Vidmar:</strong> Petrov Yakovlev! You have messed with me and my matches for the last time! I’m going to end this tonight when I end <em>you</em>! Know this, and you people here know this too: Petrov Yakovlev never earned a one on one match against me for this title. Dovydas Vidmar © vs Petrov Yakovlev</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

True to his word, Vidmar was relentless in this match as he threw his hardest blows at his 25 year old challenger. Yakovlev never backed down, making this a matter of pride and a clash of fighting spirits. Though this wasn’t one of those brawls that spill out of the ring and across the entire venue, it was every bit as hard hitting, which would explain why the match barely hit the ten minute mark before Yakovlev finally succumbed to a Bratva Bomb that sealed Vidmar’s second successful defence of his title.</p><p>

Freak Out! (Dazzler and Notorious F.R.E.A.K.) vs The New Breed (Montero & Bruno, with Ryusgi Ruysaki)</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Riding a high coming off their win at March Madness, The New Breed opened the show with a match against a debuting team, Freak Out! Coming all the way from his native New Zealand and playing a weird gimmick that’s a cross between an obnoxious male stripper and a campy guru of love, Dazzler was paired with Notorious F.R.E.A.K., a fabulous Frenchman known for his mohawk, piercings, lipstick, PVC full body suits, knee high platform boots and overall weirdness (but not his actual wrestling skills). It was an interesting match, to say the least, given how that team’s raw sexual energy meshed with the sleazy, flirtatious Bruno or Montero’s over-the-top machismo. Bordering on an outright comedy match, this was as entertaining as it had to be to get the show going and Freak Out! introduced themselves to the local audience, while the New Breed picked up an easy win after Montero caught Notorious F.R.E.A.K. in an ankle lock for the submission.</p><p>

After the match is over, Ruysaki grabs a microphone and climbs on the ring to join his teammates in celebration.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Ruysaki:</strong> Young or old, local or flown in from the other side of the globe, we don’t care who you put in front of us, all we do is knock them down! We said we would take over and we’re doing just that. The battle lines are drawn. You’re either with us, or against us. Tomohiko Yamagata! You’re young. You graduated from the NGW dojo. You never made it into the main roster in time. This is your chance. Join us.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="6PcleHR.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/6PcleHR.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Yamagata comes out the curtain, no music or fanciness. He has a mic of his own in hand.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Yamagata:</strong> I have nothing in common with you bullies. Don’t take this personal, we’re all professionals here, we don’t have to like each other to do what we do. But as a career choice, I’d rather bust my ass to win a title and know I deserve to hold it, rather than have my friends hoist me up and be a hollow champion.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Ruysaki:</strong> Well that’s a poor career choice then… Tell you what though, I’m not going to come down there and beat you right where you stand because hey, I’ve already done that in a match! I respect your guts though. I respect the grit you showed when we wrestled each other. I’m going to give you a chance to go down fighting. These boys here just had a match, but I have one more ally I can join forces with. You try and find anyone suicidal enough to team up with you by the end of the night and we can have ourselves a match!</p><p>

Blair Kerrigan vs Machiko Matsuda</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

The night’s series of women’s matches kicked off with a contest between two athletic, high flying competitors in Kerrigan and Matsuda. The Japanese star had a sense of urgency to her wrestling in light of her shocking defeat at the hands of Spider Isako and her life was made easier by the sloppiness on display from Kerrigan. Clearly, her big win over Aud Valkyrie had made the one half of the Dublin Gals a tad overconfident and led to several botched spots, allowing Matsuda an easy victory with a Run-Up Rana into a rolling pin.</p><p>

Aud Valkyrie vs Serena Ventura</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Both ladies were fighting for bragging rights here, as they’ve clearly fallen behind in the points race by this point. That didn’t make the match any less exciting though and Valkyrie did a great job of presenting herself as the fading veteran down on her luck who’s struggling for that one last huzzah. Sadly for her, it was Ventura who managed to score the win at her expense, the young German looking thrilled at her win over the veteran, who she offered a handshake to after the match.</p><p>

Gypsy Rose vs MAYA</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

Coming back from the break, two fan favourites clashed in the final women’s match of the night as the high flying Gypsy Rose took on the bubbly MAYA. The Japanese wrestler entered the contest with a single-minded focus on her opponent’s legs in an attempt to ground her, first with stiff kicks and as the match went on with more mat based holds. Rose did her best to stay on the move and utilize her high impact offense, but MAYA withstood the onslaught until her strategy began to pay dividends. Exhaustion and piling damage caught up with the Canadian competitor and once she had lost her momentum, it was only a matter of time before MAYA slapped on the Triangle Choke for the tap out.</p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Winner: MAYA</strong></p><p><strong>

Ryushi Ruysaki and Petrov Yakovlev made their entrance first, followed by the appearance of Tomohiro Yamagata. Once he had joined them in the ring, Yamagata motioned for a microphone.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Yamagata:</strong> I bet you thought I’d forfeit this match because no one would team up with me. Well, you’re right. Partially, at least. Because no one from the usual suspects would. I had to make a long distance call…</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="</p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/embed/qfH0AOAVDPU" rel="external nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/embed/qfH0AOAVDPU"</a> frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

The odd electronic beats and melody of Meat Beat Manifesto hit the PSA system and lights go out as flashing lights turn the venue into a scene out of a rave party. After several minutes to build up anticipation, out of the curtain walks…</p><p> </p><p>

The New Breed (Ruysaki & Yakovlev) vs Tomohiro Yamagata & Remmy Skye</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

They New Breed seem shocked as the match gets underway and Remmy Skye uses that to pull off a series of impressive, flashy moves that -combined with his hypnotic charisma- instantly have fans cheering for him. Yamagata takes the cue and matches the opening salvo with a few moves of his own, but being a more familiar foe to Ruysaki, he gets shut down when goes for a senton and lands back first on the raised knees of Ruysaki who had been expecting the move. The heels proceed to cut the ring in half and isolate Yamagata on their corner, while Skye riles up the fans in expectation of the comeback and hot tag. Yamagata gets a few hope spots but somehow always gets cut off, until Yakovlev tries to powerbomb him, at which point he’s able to roll through and launch the Belarussian fighter across the ring. With both men down it’s a race for the tag and Yamagata gets there first to tag his partner. Wasting no time, Skye hops over the ropes, steps on his teammate’s back and propels himself across the ring to kick Yakovlev into Ruysaki and prevent the tag. With both his opponents down, Skye hits a few more moves to ensure Yakovlev will stay down and finally ascends to the top turnbuckle to hit his spectacular Skye High (Swanton Bomb) finisher to pick up the pin and seal his RotO debut with a big win.</p><p>

Nice shows! I'm a fan of some of these tag teams you've got developing.

I'm a big fan of Mutant in the Cverse and tend to bring in guys like Notorious F.R.E.A.K to be in a stable with him.

F.R.E.A.K doesn't really light up the stat sheet but he's a fun character for sure.
