Location: Yonkers Auditorium (Yonkers, New York)

NYCW EMPIRE STATE

February 2020

Attendance: 349

Announcers: Ron South and Ernie Turner

<a href="https://imgur.com/0hb23FD"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/0hb23FD.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/05SeQbb"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/05SeQbb.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

"So what's plan B if J-Ro doesn't change her mind? Ron is headed down to Florida to cover spring training in a few weeks so he won't be able to do commentary for a while."

"Well I thinking I could give Emma Chase a call and see if she'd do it. She really liked me when I was with the SWF. I took her to this really hot gay bar to go dancing one night after we did TV in Miami."

Steve Flash's eyes bugged out of his head at the mere mention of the consensus best color person in the business. "Wait...what? You think she'd do it?"

I laughed. "No, not a chance. Even if she was free contractually, she'd cost more than all the tickets we've sold tonight. But it was great to see your face light up with hope there for minute boss."

Art Reed laughed. "He got you there boss."

"Both of you stop calling me boss."

Art and myself replied in stereo, "Sorry boss."

Steve Flashed scowled. "I hate you both. But I guess in a pinch I could always sit in the booth with you Franklin."

Art Reed interjected. "I don't know if that's a good idea for you medically Steve!"

"Medically?"

"Yeah man....I mean...you still haven't recovered from that charisma bypass you had years ago!"

I stifled a laugh for a long as I could before all three of us started to laugh together.

"You know this isn't Rib on Steve Flash Night, right? But you make a point, maybe I wouldn't be the best choice. We'll talk about this some more after tonight's show though. You jerks are buying the first two rounds though for being a bunch of smartasses."

Again in unison, "Sorry boss."

Following a couple of prelim matches, the main card begins with a match up between veteran Denny King and much hyped youngster Charlie Corner. The rookie from California took control of the action early and seemed on his way to a surprise victory until he charged at King who was leaning on the turnbuckles for his big Corner Kick move. King was playing possum however, ducked the finisher and rolled up Corner for pinfall, adding the Greco-Roman handful of tights for good measure. "Corner may have taken a tough loss tonight but he should learn from it and the sky is the limit for the good looking youngster from the Golden State." lamented announcer Ron South. (20)

Backstage, the LA Stars hyped up their match against the highly regarded veteran duo of The Dirty White Boys. With a chance for a title shot against the COTT World Tag Team Champions, The American Cobras on the line, the young masked duo showed a little more fire in their promos than last month, not that they were good by any means but maybe a tiny bit better? I need to get someone in here to work with them, maybe get them a mouthpiece if we're going to invest in them further. (31)

<a href="

In the second match of the evening, the LA Stars upset the the Dirty White Boys when a moment of miscommunication between the two long time TCW stalwarts led to Grease Hogg falling victim to the Star Destroyer double team and the pinfall. "I can't believe these two green kids managed to defeat a great team like the Boys but I don't think their luck will hold up once the American Cobras come to town!" speculated Ernie Turner. (34)

Sal DiMeo hypes the match between the masked duo of Brooklyn's Finest and the new pairing of Machine Gun Marino and Meat Cleaver Pirelli, which he dubs his 'Problem Solvers'. "So once the Machine Gun and the Meat Cleaver get their hands on you two masked bird brains, bada bing, bada boom....problem solved!" (20)

<a href="

Thanks in part to a distraction from Sal DiMeo at ringside, the Problem Solvers score the win when Pirelli hits the Meat Cleaver clothesline on Eagle for the win. (29)

<a href="

https://imgur.com/WfzMGkI"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/WfzMGkI.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/LfKOI5T"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/LfKOI5T.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/yaRlUcE"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/yaRlUcE.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

The feud between Riley McManus and Andrew Harper continued with this wild brawl. The burly fighter managed to get the technical whiz out of his comfort zone with this violent skirmish but eventually McManus began to get the better of his rival, prompting Harper to blatantly low blow him, causing referee Michael Bull to call for the immediate disqualification. Harper proceeds to put the boots to his compromised foe, prompting officials to pour out of the back before more damage can be done. (39)

<a href="

https://imgur.com/sjRRvY5"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/sjRRvY5.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/TwCVkoy"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/TwCVkoy.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/LfKOI5T"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/LfKOI5T.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/ccUQXn4"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/ccUQXn4.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /><a href="https://imgur.com/hP617rc"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/hP617rc.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

The Boys from the Yukon continue their dominant ways, easily defeating the makeshift duo of Crockett Tubbs and Geoff Borne in under ten minute with their patented high-low finisher. "Tiiiiiiiiiiimber!" yells Ernie Turner, "You'd be hard pressed to show me a better tag team in the world than these two giant lumberjacks!" (38)

<a href="

https://imgur.com/t0k0jMt"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/t0k0jMt.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/LfKOI5T"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/LfKOI5T.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/SrfPZ4A"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/SrfPZ4A.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

Ron South and Ernie Turner explain that Richie Riggins earned this Tri-State title shot against the Masked Stranger as a result of his victory over Geoff Bourne at Rush Hour but the muscular star quickly realizes that the champion is a whole other level of competition. While Riggins used his power to gain an early advantage, the champ rallied from behind, ultimately scoring the victory with the Cobra Clutch. (32)

Brutus Milano saunters his way to the ring, Empire title belt slung over his shoulders, confidently ready to take on whomever his mystery opponent is. Tennessee William emerges from behind the curtain, much the disgust of the heavily Italian, very-pro Brutus fanbase that has gathered in Yonkers.

"Now I know all my fans are going to be very upset to hear that Tennessee William won't be invoking his mandatory rematch clause tonight right here in.....based on the smell, I'm going to say Yonkers. But fear not everyone, the champ has a great opponent lined up to face him tonight. In fact, he drove all the way down here from Canada just to beat your dumb ass from pillar to post! Ladies and gentlemen, please give a warm Yonkers welcome to.......Ozzie Goldstein!" (36)

<a href="

https://imgur.com/JcUaJoG"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/JcUaJoG.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/LfKOI5T"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/LfKOI5T.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/6Mt2Gjp"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/6Mt2Gjp.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

Goldstein resorts to every dirty trick in the book to try and slow down the more power Milano including eye pokes, back racks and even a choke with his wrist tape just outside the view of the referee. Eventually Milano tires of these games and tosses him aside like a sack of potatoes before eventually clamping on his vice-like bear hug and begins squeezing the life out of the smaller Canadian. The referee checks on him and eventually his arm falls a third time, earning Milano the win. Tennessee William motions to get into the squared circle to attack the champion who drops Goldstein like a bad habit and motions for William to join him in the ring, prompting the former champion to back off with discretion being the better part of valor on this evening. (35)

Show Rating: 36

Editor's Note: I've been running of couple of prelim matches before each show but I'm opting not to post those results in order to preserve the surprise of the main card debuts of some of the youngsters I have under contact.

<a href="https://imgur.com/Ph0gzeI"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/Ph0gzeI.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

I was sucking down my second iced coffee of the day at at NY1's office and trying my best to look busy at my desk, when my iPhone lit up with an incoming text message.

"Yo Frankie! You got me. I'm in. Just text me back and let me where to show up next month and have Steve send over the paperwork. I'll call you later in the week to prep. ~ J-Ro"

I bristled. Frankie is what my mom always called me. Hearing that brought back memories of her calling me that in front of my suitemates on move in day, freshman year. Needless to say, it stuck, which was not great for someone who wanted to reinvent himself in college.

Painful flashbacks aside, this was good news. I had poked around for some other potential broadcasting partners the last two weeks while she made up her mind but J-Ro was the one I wanted all along. She was freshly retired but still young and was the most popular podcaster in the business this side of Phil Vibert. Plus she was easy on the eyes, perfect for the male demo that's the lifeblood of most wrestling companies, especially since I had just relieved the other two women in NYCW of their duties. When it came to their jobs, Fern Hathaway and Cheerleader Nicki were both......fine. Neither of them were anything special and for a company on a budget, not really giving us any bang for our buck. Their releases barely caused a ripple on our new social media accounts.

Nor did my signing of Remmy Honeyman, not that I expected the signing of a steady hand with nary an ounce of charisma to generate any buzz. That said, I've worked with him before in the Florida indies and even recommended him for a one shot with the SWF when they came through Florida, leading to him getting a nice payday in exchanging for taking a beating at the hands of Angry Gilmore that made the superstar look like a million bucks. Remmy was the perfect in-ring coach for a lot of the green young talent I've been talking with, developing them in dark matches while we groomed them for our main shows.

The other big signing we had made was a bolt from the blue. Referee Baby Jamie had a sudden falling out with USPW management and left the company. I quickly cut ties with our secondary referee Arnie Plummer and locked up Jamie to a two year written deal. It put a crimp in our budget but to get such a quality referee was a godsend. Normally the refs on our level are total weekend warriors. I mean, Arnie was a decent ref and was definitely reliable but Jamie is a big upgrade for us. Now, between him and Michael Bull, we're pretty set at that slot and I don't have to worry about the proverbial third man in the ring ruining a big match.

I fired off a text. "She's on board Steve. Email her over the paperwork. I'll see you in Allentown next weekend."

NYCW BEASTS OF WAR

March 2020

Attendance: 363

Announcers: Franklin Fumier and Ernie Turner

<a href="https://imgur.com/Ph0gzeI"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/Ph0gzeI.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/05SeQbb"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/05SeQbb.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

"Well Steve, I have to give you credit. You've managed to upgrade the preshow pizza from terrible to mediocre. Kudos I guess."

I was surprisingly nervous so busting Steve Flash's chops about the pizza in the catering section was my attempt at calming my nerves. This was my first night as the lead play by play guy for New York City Wrestling and my stomach was in knots. I had done the pre-show for last year's Supreme Challenge for the SWF and I wasn't nearly this anxious despite that broadcast being seen by exponentially more people than will ultimately see the clips of this show on our YouTube channel. But the difference is, this was my baby. I was the Peter Michaels and the Jerry Eisen of this show all rolled into one. I was calling the action and the action was my vision for what would happen with NYCW. Steve Flash has placed a lot of faith in me, hopefully a faith that was well placed. I bumped fists with Steve, Art Reed and Joanne Rodriguez, who drove up from Philly to watch the show and get a feel for the company before starting in the both next month. I made my way down to ringside to join Ernie Turner. It was going to be a big night for both of us.

In a quality opening match of the evening, The New York Doll pins Crockett Tubbs with the Punk-N-Nasty. (38)

Young up and comer Charlie Corner cuts a promo on his opponent for the evening, capable veteran Ray Snow. "Ray Snow, a name that's respected by everyone in this locker room. You've wrestled the best talent from the across the country and around the world......but you've never wrestled a prospect like me! Six foot Six, eyes as blue the ocean. I make the ladies swoon and the men cower. I'm the future of this industry and tonight I'm going to prove it at your expense. Nothing personal, but you're on my Corner." (33)

<a href="

Charlie Corner defeated Ray Snow with the Corner Kick followed up with his big Corner Cutter for the pin. (24)

Steve Flash and Art Reed watched Charlie Corner from the Nero Position behind the curtain with a collective shrug. Steve observed, "I mean the promo was pretty good considering Charlie is barely old enough to shave." Art Reed interjected, "Yeah but the kid is all knees and elbows in the ring. He hasn't even grown into his body yet really and his footwork is a disaster. Ray did all he could to carry him but Charlie is going to be a project with a capital P."

<a href="

Richie Riggins defeats Animal Harker with the Bodybag, his patented running powerslam. "Animal Harker literally just arrived at the building moments before this match started, following a delayed flight back to the States from Japan. You have to imagine jet lag played a part in his loss tonight Ernie." I speculated.

"Well jet lag or not, Richie Riggins took care of business tonight. Its not his problem that Harker was running late Franklin. This is a man's business. No time or place for excuses." (34)

The bitter feud between the DiMeo Family and Brooklyn's Finest continued in six man tag action as Freedom Eagle teamed with the upstart Casey Brothers to defeat Luca Sacramoni and the Problem Solvers, Machine Gun Marino and Meat Cleaver Pirelli as Freedom Eagle pins Sacramoni with the Freedom Slam following Sacramoni's miscommunication with his partners. After the match Marino and Pirelli shove their partner but ultimately cooler head prevail, although the Problem Solvers are clearly not happy. (23)

Sal DiMeo cuts a promo on the house mic on his way to the ring for his bout with Hawkeye Calhoun. "You know, I'm a simple man. I'm not difficult to please but my uncle....my uncle he's a different story. Losing is simply not acceptable to the head of the DiMeo Family so I'm going to go put the boots the Hawkeye Calhoun tonight to try and get the stench of Luca's loss tonight off us.' (32)

<a href="

Sal DiMeo gets the DiMeo Family back on the winning track after eye gouging Hawkeye Calhoun when referee Michael Bull was distracted and then hitting his patented DiMeo Driver, a cradle piledriver for the one two three. (32)

In the best action of the night, Riley McManus teams with the Tri-State Regional champion, the Masked Stranger, to defeat their rivals, Andrew Harper and Denny King when the Stranger puts Harper to sleep with the Cobra Clutch. (41)

In the biggest match of their young careers, the LA Stars got a chance to challenge the Confederation of the Territories World Tag Team Champions, the American Cobras. While Spillane and Malloy confounded the youngsters early on with precise strikes and technical wizardry, the LA Stars mounted a big comeback and appeared on the verge of a possible upset when the Boys From the Yukon charged the ring, attacking everything that moved. The gigantic lumberjacks were clearly upset that they didn't receive the title shot and their interference prompted a double disqualification. (28)

Cooler heads do not prevail as the trio of teams launch into a wild three team brawl, prompting officials to rush in from the back in a vain attempt to restore order. (32)

NYCW Empire Champion Brutus Milano walks to the ring and takes the ringside microphone. "Okay William. What's your excuse this time? What hired gun do you have to try and soften me up?"

The familiar blues riff of Tennessee William's theme song hits and the former champion walks through the curtain. "Brutus my simple friend, you wound me deeply with your words. Those little nagging injuries I've had are all healed up and as much as I enjoyed giving worthy challengers their chances against you since everyone knows you're not a fighting champion....."

Brutus is visibly enraged at this suggestion. "All these people know damn well that I'll fight anyone, anywhere at any time!"

"But.....as I was saying before you interrupted me, it's time for me to get my title back. I'm invoking my rematch clause tonight! I'm going to send you back to Little Italy empty handed so you'll fit in perfectly with all the other idiots there!" (47)

<a href="

https://imgur.com/JcUaJoG"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/JcUaJoG.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/LfKOI5T"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/LfKOI5T.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/efJ980c"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/efJ980c.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

William tries to stall to start the match but his game of cat and mouse ends quickly as Brutus manages to clamp on a vice-like bearhug. The Greco-Roman thumb to the eye eventually breaks the hold but the damage was done as William struggles to regain his breath. "The challenger might have broken ribs Ernie!"

"Don't be ridiculous Frank! The uncrowned champ is just catching his breath! I'd like to see how you'd do if that untrained gorilla had his mitts on you!"

Tennessee manages to go back on the offensive but keeps being thwarted by the burly Italian's superior strength. Milano appears on his way to victory when Ernie Turner leaves the booth and begins insulting the champion. "Wait...where are you going Ernie?"

Referee Michael Bull yells at Turner, telling him to get back to the booth which gives Tennessee William the distraction he needs to low blow Milano and cradle him for the pin. Referee Michael Bull turns around and makes the count, "One....two.....thr....noooo! Brutus Milano has somehow tossed Tennessee William off him in a stunning display of power and is getting back to a vertical base!"

As Tennessee William argues with the referee about a slow count, Ernie Turner hops in the ring apron and continues to berate the champion. Brutus Milano has had enough and grabs Turner by the scruff of the neck but doesn't see the set of brass knuckles the announcer had hidden in his hand until it's too late. Turner blasts Milano with the knucks and then hops down to floor, feigning innocence. Tennessee William covers him for the pin and Michael Bull begrudgingly makes the three count. "Ernie Turner and Tennessee William have just screwed over Brutus Milano! Tennessee William is the new Empire Champion but he's a fraud in every sense of the word! (36)

After the match, Ernie Turner climbs into the ring with the NYCW Empire title and wraps it around the waist of the new champion. Both men raise their hands in the air in victory, quite pleased with what they have just pulled off. "It looks like this has been a setup from the start! If Ernie Turner and Tennessee William are aligned, this could be the start of big trouble for New York City Wrestling!" (45)

There were a couple of a decent talkers and some pretty good workers in the company but no one combined the package the way that William can so he was the logical choice to build our main storyline around, at least until one of the bigger companies made their inevitable run at him. </p><p> </p><p> While the angle had gotten off to a hot start, we needed to keep it going with the King of New York show coming up. NYCW THE KING OF NEW YORK

April 2020

Attendance: 365

Announcers: Franklin Fumier and Joanne Rodriguez

<a href="https://imgur.com/Ph0gzeI"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/Ph0gzeI.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a><a href="https://imgur.com/ofzeEWB"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/ofzeEWB.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

The show begins with Steve Flash, Larry Vessey, and Rock Downpour's family in the ring, alongside a tall item covered by a sheet. Steve announces that Rock will forever be a NYCW legend and inducts him into our Hall of Fame. He continues, "Rock's legacy was a big as his laugh and love of the business so it is only fitting that we honor the big man. Going forward the annual winner of the King of New York will receive this....." Larry Vessey pulls the sheet off to reveal a beautiful trophy, far nicer than any of the championships in the company. "....the Rock Downpour Memorial Trophy! And so help me God if any man who tries to smash this trophy over someone's head! Thank you all for coming tonight and a special thank you to Rock's family for being here this evening. Rock, we miss you and love you buddy! And now, let's get down to action in the sport that Rock loved so dearly!"

In a dog of an opening match, Charlie Corner pins Lucas Sacramoni with the Corner Kick and the Corner Cutter combo. (25)

The New York Doll defeated Tank Bradley by pinfall with a Punk N Nasty. (34)

The makeshift duo of Animal Harker and Crockett Tubbs defeat the pairing of Devastating Don and Ray Snow when Harker rolls up Don for a quick pin following a miscommunication between the heel team. (35)

Sal DiMeo's bruising duo of Meat Cleaver Pirelli and Machine Gun Marino defeat the upstart Casey Brothers when Marino clamps a bear hug on Tully Casey and Pirelli absolutely demolishes him with the Meat Cleaver clothesline. "PROBLEM SOLVED!" yells out Joanne Rodriguez enthusiastically as they make the cover. (33)

The familiar strains of Tennessee William's blues riff fill the armory and the crowd begins to boo loudly. The champ confidently walks through the curtain with the NYCW Empire title belt slung over his shoulder. He is followed by Ernie Turner although his familiar "Slick Pimp Daddy" look has been replaced with an all white thoroughly bejeweled suit and a gaudy oversized pair of gold sunglasses encrusted with rhinestones. The pair climb into the ring and Turner fetches the microphone for his charge. "For the last month, everywhere I go in this hell hole of a city, all people want to ask me about is this so-called screwing of Brutus Milano. No one cares that Brutus Milano stole that title from me last December up in Buffalo. That frigid dump might be the only city worse than this one. But what happened last month was simple, my close personal friend here saw that that big goof was going to cheat to retain the Empire title and didn't want to see me get ripped off yet again. Tell 'em the facts Big Ern!"

"Big Ern?" J-Rod asked me quizzically.

"I have NO idea girl!"

"Here's the facts. This man here must have the strongest back in all of professional wrestling because he has single-handedly carried this company for the past year. That's a fact. This building has more people here tonight than have ever been here to see a NYCW Empire Champion before and that includes Brutus Milano and it includes this corrupt new owner slash washed up, has been Steve Flash. That's a fact. I was merely trying to point out to the referee that Milano was cheating and then that big ape grabbed me by the lapels. All I did was defend myself from his aggression. That's a fact. And the bottom line here is that Billy here is the best champion this company has ever had and that is an indisputable fact."

Turner hands hands the microphone back to a smirking Tennessee William.

"So now it's on to bigger and better things as the fighting-est Empire Champion of all time has put out an open challenge to the biggest stars in the wrestling world to come and try to take this gold from me. So who is it going to be? Tommy Cornell? Wolf Hawkins? Nicky Champion? Y'all best come on

out now so The Southern Star can whip your butt across all five boroughs!"

An undersized wrestler in a backwards baseball cap over-enthusiastically emerges through the curtain and heads to the ring.

"Oh for crying out loud. The so-called fighting-est Empire Champ of all time has a match with noted USPW enhancement talent Happy Elwood. No disrespect to Happy but Tennessee William is a blowhard and a damn coward." proclaims J-Ro. (35)

<a href="

Happy Elwood shocks the champ by rolling him up in a small package for a near three count to start the bout but all that he manages to do is make Tennessee William mad. The Southern Star puts the boots to the challenger and batters him from pillar to post with nary a hope spot before finishing him off with the Devil's Crossroad rolling cutter. Just for good measure, William gives him one last stiff kick in the ribs before heading to the back to a chorus of boos.(43)

In six man tag action, Denny King and the Boys from the Yukon defeat the Masked Stranger and the LA Stars when the Boys hit their high low Tiiiiiiiiber finisher on LA Star #2 for the pin. (44)

In the main event of the evening, Brutus Milano takes home the Rock Downpour Memorial Trophy, surviving Richie Riggins' match best four eliminations and scoring the victory by tossing out former USPW World Champion T-Rex to earn the title of the 2020 King of New York and a future Empire title match. (45)

Following the match, Tennessee Willam storms the ring and blindsides Brutus Milano in the ring with a chair (while taking great care not to damage the trophy). Outside the ring, Big Ern is seen handing a wad of cash to T-Rex who climbs back into the ring and choke slams Milano on to the the chair, leaving him writhing in pain as the show ends (46)

Franklin Fumier had seen a lot of things during his time in the Supreme Wrestling Federation. The owner climbing in the ring and working out the young talent was not one of them. The mental visual of Richard Eisen doing just that amused him greatly. But here he was at the Ministry, bright and early on a Monday morning to oversee Steve Flash passing along his decades of in-ring experience to the young talent that Franklin had signed to NYCW. Mind you most of this young talent was acquired by Franklin still having his access to the SWF scouting database. Dreadnaught was one of those signees.

"Nice job kid but remember to tuck your chin on that move. You've got an upper body like a Sherman Tank but that bump will catch up with your neck sooner than later if you don't. Now get with Art and go over a few things for next month's show with him." Steve told the behemoth.

Art of course was Art Reed. For someone that was helping us out on our first night, getting pressed into duty by my last minute suggestion inspired him to stick around and Steve Flash was grateful to have him as a steady hand in the ring and as a secondary road agent to help him out with the talent. Steve climbed out of the ring and asked me what I thought.

"Well you were a step slow and not super crisp on some of those chain moves boss but overall not bad for a guy your age."

"About the kid smartass! And don't call me boss. Seriously though, he's got a lot of his old man in him and by that I mean he halfway beat the crap of out me in a chain drill. Not really sure how that's even possible."

I feigned innocence.

"Oh! Of course. I mean, he's a literal monster already and he can work okay for someone that big and that young. He's definitely someone one of the big leagues will snatch up once he gets some seasoning assuming he doesn't kill someone in the ring first. I've been searching the indies to bring in someone to talk for him though. He's too green to be put with William and Ernie but he can't handle promos yet, not by a longshot. Also I think we need to do something about that mask too. It looks like he's got a jock strap on his head."

"Yeah, I'll talk with him about that. We need to get him a better look before his main roster debut next month at FIRE FIGHT. Who were you thinking about bringing in? In a pinch, we could always bring Herb Stately back. He's got a knack for managing big guys. I know he's getting close to retirement age but maybe a chance to work with Dread's kid my pique his interest?"

"He's on my list but I have a few other people in mind first. There's one guy who really killed it on the indies a few years back but flamed out in the bigs. I think we could make him work here though. I'll make some calls today. Also, I think I'm going to pass on bringing back T-Rex next month. His knees look shot and he could barely move in the King of New York battle royale. In better news though, I got a call from someone I knew in SWF who is was let go in the whole IRS sting. He's looking to get back in the ring after taking some time off to recharge his batteries and he wants to come back to where it all started for him. He's not cheap but I think we can make it work."

"Wait, who are we talking about here?"

"Well back when he worked here, Larry called him Sammy the Shark...."

In an aesthetic business like professional wrestling, Franklin Fumier knew that the winter of his discontent, spent eating takeout and drinking Mountain Dew by the gallon, had caught up to him and as an on-camera talent, he had to remedy that. He had been eating better and was certainly more active with all the walking that New York City entails than he had been back in Tampa, but being on the cusp of dad bod was not a place he wanted to reside. Steve Flash had offered to train him at the CrossFit gym that he worked out at daily but Franklin had no desire to join that fitness cult or to try out Steve Flash's legendary workout routine. He was aiming more for "not to be embarrassed to take his shirt off" shape, and less "push his body past its limits to wrestle into his fifties" shape so he found a more mellow gym in Astoria and was putting in his time on the treadmill.

Plus, it didn't hurt there were more cute guys at this gym too. Between his full time job at NY1 local news and his duties with NYCW, Franklin didn't have a lot of time for a relationship but it never hurt to look. He was grateful to see the overwhelmingly positive response and support that Duane Fry received when he came out and that always gave him hope for his future in the business. As he wiped down his treadmill after finishing his run, he saw that his phone had been blown up with notifications from one of his wrestling news sites. He quickly placed a call.

"Hey boss, you see all this stuff going down?"

"Well I heard from Mitch this morning. He spent the whole call complaining about all the crap Brother Grimm said about his company on Vibert's podcast. Looks like PSW and GSW aren't going to be on each's other's Christmas card lists any time soon."

"No, bigger than that Steve. Cornell's leaving the UK and coming back to the States!"

"Oh wow, is he coming back to finish up his career with TCW?"

"Nope. He signed a huge deal with USPW!"

"Christ, the rich get richer. What the hell Frank? Why didn't you try to make a play for him?"

My jaw nearly hit the floor.

"What.....I mean, Steve...the budget...I couldn't...."

Steve Flash let out a belly laugh.

"I'm just messing with you kid. Relax. I know we don't have budget to take a meeting with Tommy Cornell, let alone offer him a deal."

"Plus there's more, some big news out of Japan too. Black Canvas Grappling got raided by the police yesterday and exposed a Yakuza money-laundering scheme from inside their organization. They just lost a lot of money and both Shogun TV and All Japan TV dropped both of their shows."

"That's awful. I know from the times I've worked there, organized crime always loomed on the periphery. It was known but just not talked about. Any blowback on Harker? I know he takes dates there."

"Nah, it's all higher up. None of the talent was implicated."

"That's good. I'll shoot him a text just in case he doesn't know."

"Okay, let me run boss. Sammy's calling me at noon to go over our plans for his debut and I still need to get home and shower."

"Sounds good. And don't call me boss."

"Sorry boss."

NYCW FIRE FIGHT

May 2020

Attendance: 421

Announcers: Franklin Fumier and Joanne Rodriguez

"Damn Steve, look at that crowd! There has to be at least fifty more people than last month up in Harlem!"

Steve Flash peered through the curtain next to Art Reed at the Nero Position and a smile crossed his face.

"I've seen some good traction on our social media. The YouTube numbers have been going up the last few weeks so I was hoping it would translate to the box office. I think the people are liking what's Frank's been feeding them so far. Plus the kid's a shrewd negotiator so we've actually managed to improve our talent a little bit and still turn more of a profit than we did before Larry retired. Maybe I didn't buy a pile a junk like the dirt sheets said I did."

"Nah, it's still a pile of junk boss. The kid just put a shiny coat of wax on it. Don't get cocky. We still got a lot of work to do before NYCW is out of the woods."

Steve Flash raised an eyebrow.

"We? So I guess that means you're sticking around for good then?"

"I guess so. I'm in the home stretch of my career and helping to boost up this territory for future generations is a good a final act as any to finish up with. Plus you all need some pizzaz here. Backstage is whiter than a Coldplay concert without me!"

The two old friends shared a laugh as the bell rang to start the main card. A not subtle ripoff of The Godfather theme begins to play and Sal DiMeo leads his charges past Reed and Flash.

"Give 'em hell Sal!"

"Hey, fuggeddaboutit boss! Bada bing, bada boom! We got this!" replied Sweet Sal.

"Wait, was that kayfabe Steve?" asked a puzzled Art Reed.

"I honestly have no clue with those boys Art. I figure better to not ask questions to avoid ending up in the trunk of a Cadillac in abandoned parking lot in Asbury Park."

"Good idea Steve, good idea."

In the opening match of the evening, the feud between the DiMeo Family and Brooklyn's Finest rolled on in eight man tag action. The quartets brawled and the finish came when Machine Gun Marino clamped a bear hug on Chuck Casey.

"Here comes the big Meat Cleaver! Boom! PROBLEM SOLVED!" exclaimed Joanne Rodriguez as referee Michael Bull counts the one two three. (32)

Charlie Corner continues to impress but ultimately falls short against veteran powerhouse, Richie Riggins, succumbing to the Body Bag powerslam after missing the Corner Kick. (26)

Instrumental music that is vaguely reminiscent of Dean Martin's hit song "Sway" begins to play and a man with an impeccably coiffed head of hair garbed in a Tom Ford tuxedo emerges from behind the curtain and saunters confidently into the ring, microphone in hand.

<a href="

https://imgur.com/bw1vDyi"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/bw1vDyi.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

"Whoever this guy is, he brought his own martini!"

"Franklin, I believe that's Playboy Jake Sawyer! He was the hottest manager on the independent wrestling scene for a number of years before spending some time in TCW. No one has heard a peep from him of late though! I wonder what he's doing here?" said J-Ro.

"For those of you who know, you know. For those of you don't, shame on you. My name is Playboy Jake Sawyer and I'm the hottest free agent manager in all of professional wrestling. For years, I've been living the good life at my residences in Vegas, South Beach, Monaco, Cabo and Saint Tropez but of late, something changed. As I spent some time at my new bachelor pad at Hudson Yards...."

The mere mention of the newest playground for the elite in the Big Apple, a lavish eyesore on the NYC skyline, prompts boos from the crowd.

"....I've heard all the help talking excitedly about this up and coming wrestling company, New York City Wrestling. So being the man of means and importance that I am, I reached out to some of my wrestling contacts and decided to grace this upstart group with my presence. And as you all know, the walls have ears in this business because no sooner had I dipped my toe back in the pool, I get a call from one of the legends of the business, begging me to help his son. He said, Jake please! You're the only one that can look out for my boy! He lost his football scholarship because he was too violent in practice. He injured half the starting offensive line in the first practice! I had no choice but to let him follow in my footsteps. Won't you please take him under your wing Jake? And me being the caring soul I am said yes, of course. So tonight, making his New York City Wrestling debut is my newest client, the One Man Battleship......Dreadnought!"

A literal monster of a man, garbed in a mask and cloak emerges from behind the curtain, prompting audible gasps from people in the crowd. As the masked goliath climbs into the ring, Sawyer smiles from ear to ear, like the cat the ate the canary.

"And he's ready to face anyone in the locker room who wants to take their beating like a man."

Generic heavy metal strains begin to play.

"That's Jimmy Cox! He's one of the toughest gaijin workers ever in the history in Japan. I've heard reports that he was back here in the States looking for new challenges!" I proclaimed.

Sawyer looks less than thrilled but still calls for the bell. (20)

Jimmy Cox ducks a big clothesline to start the match and peppers Dreadnought with punches that have little effect. It only gets worse from there for Jimmy as the massive rookie batters him from pillar to post and covers him for the pin after his crushing gut wrench power bomb called the Dread Bomb. (23)

The familiar theme song of Sammy the Shark begins to play and the crowd erupts into cheers for the returning hero. Sammy emerges from the back and hands out autographed playing cards to the kids in the audience. The crowd chants "Welcome back!" and Sammy takes the microphone to give some love back to the crowd.

"Well good to see you all again too! The Shark is back in town and I've got a Royal Flush to play! I'm back here in the Big Apple to win that one title that eluded me last time, the Empire Championship! My road to a title shot begins tonight with the New York Doll so let's get down to business!" (57)

Sammy the Shark looks great in his return to NYCW and was well on his way to victory when a man in a black hoodie hops the rail and waffles him with a chair shot, prompting an immediate disqualification. He runs off through the crowd without anyone getting a clear look at him. (45)

In six man tag action, Riley McManus and the LA Stars defeated Andrew Harper and the Boys from the Yukon when McManus surprises Harper with a quick rollup for the pinfall. (39)

<a href="

The feud between Denny King and the Masked Stranger remained inconclusive in this Tri-State Regional title match when tempers flared and both men were counted out while battling at ringside. (39)

Sporting brand new bleached blonde locks and flanked once again by his manager, "Big Ern" Ernie Turner, the NYCW Empire Champion Tennessee Williams cuts a promo on his way to the ring.

"So Brutus Milano gets lucky in some stupid battle royale and for that reason alone, the powers that be have decided that makes him worthy of another shot at my coveted Empire Championship. It's a joke and a farce. Ain't that right Big Ern?"

"Ask me no questions and I'll tell you no lies champ! And that's the truth."

"You're an honest man in a business of liars and thieves Big Ern! So here is what's going to happen. I'm going to teach the Sicilian Strongman a lesson he's never going to forget tonight. You may be bigger than me Brutus. You may be stronger than me. But for damn sure, you ain't smarter than me son and I'm going to prove that yet again!" (52)

<a href="

Brutus Milano defeats his arch-nemesis but doesn't regain his Empire title as the Southern Star gets himself intentionally counted out. After the match, Tennessee Williams taunts Milano and manages to lure him out of the ring......right into a trap where the Boys From the Yukon ambush him and the three of them beat down the Sicilian Strongman. (42)

After the beatdown, Tennessee William, "Big Ern" Ernie Turner and the Boys from the Yukon climb into the ring and raise each others' arms in triumph.

"It appears like this alliance just got even bigger and I shudder to think about what it means for New York City Wrestling!" (44)

News had broken earlier that morning that the legendary Sam Strong had passed just days after his 72 birthday. While no one in the company had worked with him, many of the roster had grown up watching the legendary wars between him and Rip Chord. Dreadnought seemed to be taking it the hardest, as his father, Dread, had been the one who ended Strong's legendary four year SWF World title reign and Sam had been a quasi-uncle figure in his life for as long as he could remember. Steve and Art sensed he was hurting and did their best to console him. For as big and tough as Dreadnought was, it was easy to forgot he was still a few year shy of being able to buy a beer. Steve offered to let him take the night off with pay, a small miracle of an offer among independent wrestling promoters but he declined.</p><p> </p><p><strong><em> "Nah. I appreciate it but Sam would want the show to go on."</em></strong></p><p> </p><p> Even without any history in the company, we started the show with the traditional bell salute to the fallen icon. <a href="https://imgur.com/xBzMpIa"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/xBzMpIa.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a> <a href="https://imgur.com/e6JTw01"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/e6JTw01.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a> <a href="https://imgur.com/mcBkSkk"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/mcBkSkk.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

"No, I totally agree Art. It's a great move to bring Bobby in here. I know you two are close and we could use the help backstage for sure. Plus the kid has been doing well with the budget so we have some wiggle room financially."

Steve Flash's blessing to bring in one of Art Reed's closest friends in the business, technical wrestling wiz Bobby Thomas, brought a smile to the veteran worker's face. Art continued the pitch even though Steve had already given approval.

"Plus he's not quite done in the ring yet and said he's willing to work the pre-show matches for a few months to try and get a feel for some of our younger talent too. I'll text him when I get back home tonight. I'm pretty sure he can start with us down in Philly for GANG WARS."

The conversation was interrupted by the phone.

"Give me a sec Art. I think that might be the Thai place we ordered dinner from. Their delivery guy always gets lost but their food is worth it. You're going to love it. Yes, hello..........oh hey Sammy. What's going on?"

Sammy the Shark was a recent signee, returning to where he got his start after a few years working for the SWF. He had been let go during their recent cutbacks and we brought him in to work a program with Art before moving him into title contention.

"I hate to do this to you Steve but TCW just made me a big offer and my wife would absolutely murder me if I didn't take the security. So it looks like GANG WARS is going to be my last show with you guys. I'm really sorry but I will do whatever you need me to do on my way out the door."

Art Reed saw the Thai food-related smile that Steve Flash had on his face quickly fade away and he braced for bad news.

"No, no. I get it Sammy. You have to do what you have to do. We'll be in touch after we figure out what we're going to do instead. See you in Philly."

Steve Flash hung up the phone and sighed deeply.

"Packer grab him too?" asked Reed.

"Nah. He's headed to TCW. I can't blame him for taking the offer but it leaves you without a dance partner after the next show. Let's give Frank a call and let him know so we can start figuring out what to do next."

Art Reed looked at his phone and showed the news to the friend.

"Well what about him? Looks like he's getting cut from Supreme too. He's going to cost more than Sammy and his stamina's not what it was but it might buy us some time maybe?"

"Not the worst idea Art. I'll ask the kid what he thinks of him."

<a href="https://imgur.com/Ph0gzeI"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/Ph0gzeI.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a> <a href="https://imgur.com/xBzMpIa"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/xBzMpIa.jpg" title="source: imgur.com" /></a>

"Ugh....that's just total crap about Sammy but we can definitely rework the story. I like Art's suggestion for a replacement in the story going forward. I wasn't close with him when I was there but everyone seemed to like him. If one of the other two bigs doesn't snatch him up, I'm sure he'd be game to doing business with us. I'm glad you called though boss. I had something else I wanted to run by you. Do you follow the scene Down Under?"

I wasn't sure if Steve was going to go for this idea but I thought it was worth a try. Plus I had already made initial contact and had discussed contractual terms. Better to ask forgiveness than permission I always say.

"Not super closely. I know all the big companies here are dying to get their hands on Swoop McCarthy but he's locked up for several more years. Why?"

For someone who loved wrestling as much as Steve does and for someone so tech savvy, he really didn't spend a lot of time checking out the wrestling sites. If he did, he would have heard all the hardcore wrestling fans gushing about the latest "can't miss" star, a promising young kid named Will Beaumont. The fans weren't alone. The SWF's database had super high grades on the handsome youngster as well. He also would have heard that Beaumont had a big falling out with RAW management as he was now currently a free agent.

"I want to sign Will Beaumont. He's a really hot pros......"

"A really hot prospect. I know who he is Frank. I may not live online like you do but I still know things." Steve Flash interrupted with a wink. "How much is this going to cost me? I'm sure you've already talked to him."

"Well, funny you'd say that. I've been DM-ing with him on Instagram and I've already got an agreement in principle lined up. The contract is reasonable but obviously the travel is going to cost us."

Steve Flash furrowed his brow at the financial implications.

"Look I know you want to make a big splash Frank but that's a lot of money to spend on a kid, considerable upside or not, who really doesn't have a lick of name value here in the States. And as soon people begin to learn who he is, he'll get snatched up in no time."

"We won't lose him any time soon Steve."

"Why would you think that? You said yourself the SWF have a super high grade on him and I'm sure that means USPW and TCW both have him on their radar as well. For that matter, I'm sure promoters in the UK and Japan have eyes on this kid as well."

"It's the lure of the Big Apple. His mother was obsessed with New York City. She watched every movie she could about it. She had photos of the skyline hanging on the walls when he was growing up. She always wanted to come here but never made it. She passed away from complications from breast cancer about two years ago. He wants to work here as a tribute to her, to finish the journey here that she couldn't. Plus, he's willing to sign a two year, non-exclusive written deal with us. That gives us plenty of time to get him up to speed with our fans and if he's the star with that "IT" factor that everyone seems to think he has, we'll make our money back and then some!"

"So basically you're making this impossible for me to say no, huh Frank?"

"What can I say Steve? I play to win."

"Send him over the contract and I'll see you later in the week."
