Using MapTool to Organize/Visualize Roster

Recommended Posts

I use MapTools for various digital RPG games and I realized I could hook it into the TEW Picture Folder and have a way to organize my roster:

 • Use Sizes to easily identify major stars down to unimportant jobbers
 • Easily replicate entire roster for organizing shows and storylines
 • Divide up roster in multiple different ways. Who can carry a match? Who can use the mic

In the above example Workers who are in storylines are above the line and workers who are experienced enough to carry a match are to the left. Sizes represent their current push (which I update periodically).

In this example I am setting up a show. I have my unused workers to my left and I can book main card and pre-show to visualize who is being used.

I can then repeat this over and over again so in an X month period I can confirm that workers are being used but not overused (based on how many copies of them I end up needing).

Below I'll post some basic tutorials on how to get it, set it up, and get it hooked up to your picture folder/event folder so you can visually plan out shows all at once.

How to Set It Up

When you first load it up it will be a green background, that kind of sucks.

Go to Map -> Edit Map

This menu lets you set up your grid style (hex vs. squares) and most importantly, allows you to change the default background. I like to match my background to my promo colors but you can do you.

How to add picture folders

You'll notice how I have all those folders to the left? That is where all your backgrounds/tokens/objects are stored. By default all you'll see is default but you can add new folders very easily.

Click on File -> Add Resource Thttp://i.imgur.com/epM4yAi.png

Unless you've memorized or saved pathways, you'll need to explore your computer to find the proper folder. Click on the "3 dots" to open up the folder explorer

http://i.imgur.com/tfo5qpF.png?1

Find your desired folder and click "OPEN". Typically TEW folders are located as follows:

C:\Program Files (x86)\GDS\TEW2020\Pictures\Default\People

Now depending on your particular computer and OS this might be different. The disk drive might be D: or E: or something, and you might use the Program Files instead of the Program Files (x86) so poke around for it.

NOTE: This will automatically include subfolders so you can pre-arrange things.

http://i.imgur.com/x93n55T.png?1

Click 'Open' when you find the folder you want and it'll take you back to the previous menu now with the folder pathway filled out. Now just click Install to let it add the resources to map tools.

http://i.imgur.com/08ozgRB.png?1

Now you should see your folder on the Resource Library on the left.

Repeat as necessary. If you add more images to these folders afterwards, the program will automatically detect them and add them, even while the program is up and running (you'll need to click off the folder and then back to it to get it to 'refresh').

Faq

There are a couple of things to note:

1) Upper left are your layers. Like with other photo editors you can layer things up and down

2) If you don't want the grid snap you can go Map -> Edit Map and select No Grid

3) To change sizes of tokens right click on them -> Size

Let me know if you have any other questions that I can help you with and I can add them here.
