SCW: You Gotta Have Faith (C-Verse)

INTERLUDE

January 1, 2020

Texas

It's the beginning of a new year...and Christian Faith has a problem.

The past few years have seen the wrestling business take several strange turns. SWF titan Richard Eisen has been forced into retirement. SOTBPW is now EILL, with changes in ownership leading to the ousting of successful booker Pablo Rodriguez. A tsunami that hit Japan in 2016 has created a scenario where the entire wrestling landscape in the land of the rising sun is on the verge of collapse.

And all of this...brings an itch back to the old legend camped out at his ranch in Texas.

He doesn't have the money himself to make a go of it. What he does have are street smarts and a wide assortment of contacts whose days as active competitors are done. Maybe they want no part of running a business first-hand...but perhaps they'll want a piece of the action.

With a list of phone numbers in his hand, he sits at his desk overlooking the rolling hills of his ranch and frantically punches numbers into his phone. Some are old numbers long out of service. Others send him straight to voicemail...but a few answer. These few, Faith insist, can be part of something special, something that has the potential to bring no-strings-attached wrestling back to Texas in ways not seen since SCCW decades prior.

Some say no. But a few say yes. The next few days of meetings at Faith's ranch prove to be very interesting, indeed.

A few days later, the following press release hits news desks around Texas.

CHRISTIAN FAITH LAUNCHES SOUTHERN CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Hall of Immortals Member Begins New Journey With Upstart Promotion

Fans of wrestling in the Lone Star State now have a hometown promotion.

Multiple-time world champion Christian Faith has announced the formation of Southern Championship Wrestling. The new business is expected to start running shows as soon as this month, and Faith is bullish about the company's long-term prospects.

“I've taken on the responsibility of bringing professional wrestling back to Texas in a way nobody else has for some time now,” he said from his ranch. “I know fans in this state are some of the most passionate in the country, and together with my group of investors, we're looking forward to giving them something to cheer for.”

Faith did not elaborate on who his investors were, only saying that they were “friends of his from way back when.” He also adds SCW is already beginning the process of finding new young stars that can carry the flag of the promotion moving forward.

“We'll have some names people may recognize, but our primary focus is making sure we get guys who can grow with us,” Faith said. “That may mean some short-term growing pains, but long-term, it'll get us where we want to be.”

Stay tuned for more news from SCW headquarters!

It's good to be back!!!

TEW 2016 players may remember me from a variety of projects. I did a bunch of drafts, as well as the WIRE project with southsidehitmen, Uncrewed, and willr0ck. I also, of course, did an SCW diary from that game as well, and I'm really excited to see if I can run it back with some success now that I've finally, FINALLY, got the chance to download the 2020 version.

There will, of course, be some new wrinkles to this diary that weren't in the last one. Specifically, the group of investors will have several names you've heard of, and they'll make appearances as I see fit (usually when something's gone wrong or if I feel a sudden rush of creativity).

There is one thing to keep in mind. I'm playing this game on a virtual Windows setup on my Mac (Wine/Wineskin/Wineskin Winery and I are no longer on speaking terms). This will definitely be more text-based, but I've gotten more experienced with Photoshop and will give the old college try at creating graphics where I can.

I don't have the slightest idea how this is going to go. I haven't played TEW 2020 at all whatsoever before diving in head-first with this (blame a ridiculous work schedule that's kept me booked solid through the summer). Perhaps I'll be okay, perhaps I'll land flat on my face. Either way, it's gonna be a lot of fun to read (or so I hope!).

Mid-January

Another ranch in Texas

“What is it about retired wrestlers and ranches?,” Christian Faith wondered to himself as he parked his pickup truck outside the gate.

He'd been to his friend's house many times, of course. He'd come for poker games, or to Super Bowl parties, but he'd never come to discuss business because they'd never been business partners. That all changed when Faith founded SCW, of course, and the owner of the ranch became one of the company's more prominent investors.

Faith jogged up the hill and rang the doorbell outside the brick house.

The brick house's inhabitant dutifully answered.

MuWTNgu.jpg

“What, no suit for the fancy businessman?,” Rip Chord said with a smile.

“You know me better than that,” Faith countered as he sauntered through the door and walked past a wall full of pictures of Rip's son, Jay. “Come on. I'd like to get home before dark.”

Rip followed in haste (well, as in haste as a retired wrestler can given the usual assortment of mobility issues), and the two sat down at his dining room table. Immediately, Faith pulled out a piece of paper with 27 names scribbled on it.

“What's that one at the bottom?,” Rip asked, squinting.

“He's a guy from Japan,” Faith said. “He's really good. You'll love him. He'll be in the opening match this week at Awakening.”

“Nice name,” Rip replied with a smirk. “Let's see what else we've got here...”

QhxQOcR.jpg

“These guys are our main-eventers,” Faith said. “Frederique's as close to a star as we're going to get. I don't know how many more miles he's got on the tires, but hopefully we can get something out of him.”

Peak's no spring chicken, either,” Rip replied, “but those other two can go, man.”

“Wait'll you see the tag team division,” Faith quipped.

mvxMNPo.jpg

“Whoa, whoa,” Rip said, his eyes getting big. “You got Akima and Toma to fly in, too? That's not gonna be cheap.”

“We need star power, Rip,” Faith said, somewhat anticipating that response. “You know that as well as anybody. Between those two being over and the other guys being able to go, we've got some real possibilities here. Plus, it's not like I'm planning to fly them in every month, at least not until we're making some money.”

“I miss the days when guys'd fly halfway around the world for a shot,” Rip reminisced. “Then again, I never did like Japan much. Sake never agreed with me.”

41NrKZb.jpg

“These are our lower-card guys,” Faith explained. “I don't anticipate using everyone, obviously, but a lot of these boys are locals, and they'll work cheap.”

“You think Harry Allen's a lower-card guy?,” Rip asked.

“I've got plans for him,” Faith responded. “He's another guy who's past 40, but I think he can give some good, old-fashioned Texas shine to one of the kids.”

u3kT5mc.jpg

“And here's our staff,” Faith finished. “I'll be agenting the matches myself. Figure that helps cut costs, plus I know enough to get by.”

“Flying guys in from Japan, getting Frederique on board, and you're JUST NOW concerned about cutting costs?!?!,” Rip said half-jokingly. “Look, I trust you, but you gotta know how ambitious this looks.”

“Anything worth doing's worth doing well,” Faith said, folding up the paper and putting it in his pocket. “That's why you invested, right?”

“Well, sure,” Rip said. “Also I figure maybe when we grow a little, you can get Jay into the fold and maybe he can swing by his old man's house every now and then. Gets lonely up here.”

“Figured you'd enjoy the company,” Faith surmised, standing up from his chair.

“How, exactly, do you plan on getting to everyone else?,” Rip asked. “It's not like...well, it's not like they're next door.”

“Let me worry about that,” Faith said with a surprising amount of confidence. “There's four of us. I asked the other two guys for defined reasons.”

“I'm still shocked you FOUND 'em!,” Rip laughed as he went to open the door.

The two Texas wrestling legends embraced before Faith ambled down the driveway to his truck. When he got inside, he let out a gigantic sigh of relief.

“One down,” he said as the engine roared to a start. “Hope the other guys are as receptive.”

At that moment, an alert caused Faith's phone to vibrate.

FLIGHT 3721 FROM TOKYO DELAYED,” it read. “NEW ARRIVAL TIME: 10 PM.”

Cursing his rotten luck, Faith punched the gas pedal and departed the Chord compound with a cloud of dust behind him. There would be bigger problems, but for now his quandary was simple: How would he kill time until Akima Brave, Toma, and the mystery man landed in the United States?

Ahead of SCW Awakening, Christian Faith has spent his time doing two things: Filling up a notebook with match/angle ideas and brainstorming theme music for his entire roster.

Below are the chosen tunes for each worker at the start of their SCW careers. Note that Faith has made a house rule out of having no more than one entrance theme per artist.

Christian Faith: “Faith,” George Michael

Frederique: “Sexy and I Know It,” LMFAO

Doug Peak: “Mississippi Queen,” Mountain

Frankie Perez: “Trampled Under Foot,” Led Zeppelin

Masked Cougar: “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” The Tokens

Akima Brave/Toma: “Paranoid,” Black Sabbath

Marvel Malloy/Storm Spillane: “Kickstart My Heart,” Motley Crue

El Jaguar/Tigre Salvaje, Jr.: “Welcome to the Jungle,” Guns n' Roses

California Love Machine/Frankie-Boy Fernandez: “California Love,” Dr. Dre/Tupac Shakur

Rockin' Ryan Turner/Stan Manna: Whatever garbage song their band wants to promote that month

American Flash: “Stars and Stripes Forever,” John Philip Sousa

Bradley Blaze: “Feel the Heat,” Henry Paul Band

Desert Storm: “Radar Love,” Golden Earring

Harry Allen: “Life in the Fast Lane,” The Eagles

Jason Patterson: “Wrong Thing to Do,” Mudcrutch

Jay Silver: “Fuel,” Metallica

Joffy Laine: “Ramblin' Man,” The Allman Brothers Band

Kip Keenan: “I Was Made For Lovin' You,” KISS

Texas Hangman: “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,” AC/DC

???: “Sympathy for the Devil,” The Rolling Stones

SCW Awakening

January 2020, Week Three

Attendance: 519

“Well, I guess it would be nice...”

The crowd comes to its feet as SCW CEO Christian Faith appears at the top of the ramp, microphone in hand. It's not a gigantic crowd, but the gathering of 500+ people certainly represents a good first impression for the owner/booker.

CF: “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Southern Championship Wrestling!”

Big pop.

CF: “Fans in this area of the country are some of the best in the world. It's my honor to bring you this promotion, one that figures to have something for everyone. We've got cowboys. We've got names any wrestling fan will recognize. We've got some of the best young workers in the world, and we think you'll love what they bring to the table.

“We're going to kick things off with a bang. If you've seen anything about this show, you know we have a mystery man in the first match. It's my pleasure to introduce to you one of the brightest young stars in Japan...MASA KURATA!!!

“Sympathy for the Devil” begins to play as Masa Kurata walks out for the first match in SCW history.

SEGMENT RATING: 48

- - -

MATCH #1: Jay Silver vs. Masa Kurata

Kurata isn't well-known in the States, so this acts as his official introduction. Jay Silver, while promising, is only 19, so he's in the “paying his dues” portion of his career. That includes bumping his butt off for Kurata, who finishes him with ease in 6:23 following a K-HD.

WINNER: Masa Kurata, pinfall

MATCH RATING: 33

- - -

We cut backstage, where a limo pulls up outside the arena. The back door opens, and out walks Frederique to a rousing chorus of boos and catcalls.

F: “Tonight, I give Southern Championship Wrestling a touch of class. This cesspool needs something to be proud of. It needs a champion who carries himself a certain way, not some washout who came home from Japan or some coward who wears a masks and cosplays as a lion.

“No, SCW desperately needs someone classy as its champion. Someone who looks the part, dresses the part, acts the part. There's only one man they could have called who fits that bill...and it's the man you see before you.”

SEGMENT RATING: 65

- - -

MATCH #2: Bradley Blaze vs. Texas Hangman

SCW has high hopes for both of these guys, and fans should expect to see them a lot (because of both their potential and their willingness to work cheap!). Blaze does a lot of the dirty work here in carrying the match, but gets only a chair shot for his troubles as he gains the upper hand and sets up for his finishing move. That's enough to draw a DQ from referee Dwight Kumas at 7:55.

WINNER: Bradley Blaze, DQ

MATCH RATING: 43

- - -

Backstage, Frankie Perez loosens up ahead of the main event, but encounters Masked Cougar.

FP: “...listen. Frederique is an arrogant punk. He's going to try stuff out there tonight. I'm all for doing things the right way, and if he tries any nonsense on you, know that I've got your back.”

Perez extends his hand. Cougar takes it, but pulls Frankie in close.

MC: “I appreciate that. But when push comes to shove, and it's the two of us fighting it out for the title, know that I'm holding nothing back.”

FP: “Someone of your stature shouldn't be getting the food chain this wrong.”

A slow clap is heard off-screen, and we hear a heavy set of footsteps belonging to Doug Peak.

DP: “Look at the little people fighting for table scraps. Frederique isn't the guy you have to worry about. What you SHOULD be trying to figure out is how to get past SCW's resident mountain. I've traveled the world, run with the best, and beaten the best. Tonight's gonna be no different.”

MC: “Pretty sure coming out of the same womb as your brother doesn't equal 'running with the best,' Dougie.”

Peak comes closer to Cougar and Perez, towering over both of them before security arrives on the scene to break up the brewing situation.

SEGMENT RATING: 41

- - -

MATCH #3: Rock City Stars vs. Samoan Pit Bulls

Akima Brave and Toma are two of the biggest stars on the roster, and they were put with Rockin' Ryan Turner and Stan Manna as a way to display what they can do. The crowd gets really into this, and the faces more than hold up their end of the bargain. Somewhat predictably, though, Manna falls victim to a Samoan Suplex from Brave at 12:48, and that's enough to give the WLW invaders the victory.

WINNERS: Samoan Pit Bulls, pinfall

MATCH RATING: 58

- - -

Akima Brave and Toma celebrate their victory, but they're interrupted by Christian Faith, who appears at the top of the ramp.

CF: “Boys! Very impressive. I'm happy to have you here in SCW, and I've got a big announcement you're going to like.

“Next month at Slings and Arrows, we're going to have a tag team tournament. The winners of this tournament will win...these.”

Faith goes into a duffel bag at his feet and pulls out...two title belts!

CF: “The winners will be the first SCW Tag Team Champions. And Samoan Pit Bulls? By winning tonight, you've ensured the #1 seed.

“You should be proud of yourselves, but don't get cocky. We've got a bunch of talented teams here in SCW, and they all want these just as much as you do. Good luck...you might need it.”

SEGMENT RATING: 56

- - -

Backstage, Bradley Blaze is being tended to after being assaulted to end his match earlier in the night. He looks up, and we hear a familiar voice from off-screen.

“Howdy, partner.”

The camera pans left, and we see Harry Allen standing in the doorway.

HA: “You just hear that? They're doing a tag team tournament next month.”

BB: “I heard. Why are you here? You've got a match.”

HA: “Because I see a lot of myself in you, kid. You've got a ton of potential. You carry yourself the right way. You just need someone to get the best out of you to get you to the level you want to get to.”

Blaze stands up off the table and waves off the medical professional tending to him.

BB: “You could tag with anybody in that locker room. Why me?”

HA: “I'm no young buck anymore, kid. This is probably my last stop. All I have left to do is mentor the next generation. Maybe I can help you...while you help me.”

A pause.

HA: “Think it over. I think we'd make a heck of a team riding into town and going up against the bad guys.”

Allen leaves for his match as Blaze winces in pain from the earlier assault.

SEGMENT RATING: 39

- - -

MATCH #4: Harry Allen vs. Desert Storm

Fans hadn't had a whole lot to cheer about to this point, but Harry Allen changes that in a big way. He's one of the more recognizable faces on the roster, and judging by this effort, he may still have plenty of gas left in the tank. He controls most of this match and prevails at 10:26 after a Flying Fist Drop.

WINNER: Harry Allen, pinfall

MATCH RATING: 48

- - -

MATCH #5: SCW World Championship

Frankie Perez vs. Masked Cougar vs. Frederique vs. Doug Peak

The main event for SCW's ultimate prize more than lives up to the hype. While Doug Peak may be feeling the effects of a long career, Frederique turns back the clock with a vintage performance to keep up with Perez and Cougar. In true “top heel” fashion, Frederique capitalizes on Perez and Peak fighting outside by rolling up Cougar at 11:39 with both feet on the ropes. Kumas doesn't see it, and Frederique gets his hand raised to loud boos and catcalls from every corner of the building.

WINNER, AND NEW SCW WORLD CHAMPION: Frederique, pinfall

MATCH RATING: 62

- - -

Frederique celebrates with the title, but out walks Christian Faith.

CF: “I'm not at all surprised, Frederique. You may have escaped with the title this time around, and I can't find it in me to reverse the decision, but I think I've found a way to put your skills to the test.

“The tag team turmoil coming up next month? Well, it'll include the main event. Frederique, you and Doug Peak will team up to face Frankie Perez and Masked Cougar. If you get the pinfall, you get March off. However...if Peak gets the win or submission for your team, he gets a title shot, AND if Perez or Cougar win, you'll have to defend against BOTH of them in a triple threat match.”

Frederique throws a temper tantrum in the middle of the ring, but backs into Perez and Cougar. The duo chase him out of the ring, and he ends the show with the title belt over his head and his mouth going a mile a minute.

SEGMENT RATING: 57

Really enjoyed the first show. Masa Kurata is one of my favorites so fairly excited he's here. Like the Blaze and Allen team and if Allen lucked out and hasn't hit time decline he could be a real asset. Big fan of a lot of workers involved so far and am interested to see where you take them.

Thanks for reading! I'm hoping I got lucky and can get some mileage out of Allen. He was a good, solid, steady midcarder in a few 2016 games, and if he can shepherd Bradley Blaze along while providing me with my "token cowboys" team, that ticks a bunch of boxes.

I'm hoping to have the next entry/full prediction card up tomorrow. I'm really excited to see if I can keep this going!

TROUBLE ON THE HORIZON FOR SWF?

Still reeling from the retirement of longtime head Richard Eisen, the Supreme Wrestling Federation has seen its stature decrease within the wrestling world. Now considered merely a Medium-sized promotion, those within the industry wonder if a bloodletting is in the company's future. At a minimum, the pressure is squarely on Richard's sons to right the ship.

PGHW ALSO ON THE ROCKS

The Japanese wrestling scene hasn't been the same since the tsunami of 2016 and the Yakuza scandal that rocked WLW. Pride Glory Honor Wrestling hasn't been immune to this downturn, and word has it that several longtime stalwarts (including at least one main-eventer) will be departing the company in the near future. PGHW officials were tight-lipped, but we can confirm several calls have been made by agents of concerned PGHW employees to promotions in Australia and the United States.

KILLER SHARK RE-SIGNS WITH TCW

One of Total Championship Wrestling's brightest prospects will remain in the fold for several more years. Killer Shark, a behemoth with considerable potential, opted to sign a new written contract rather than test the waters and entertain offers from the likes of SWF and United States Pro Wrestling. It's incredibly competitive at the top of the U.S. wrestling scene, so TCW will need all the help it can get.

We waste no time diving right into the action, as the two teams in the first match fit tons of action into eight minutes. The Samoan Pit Bulls, however, are the top seed for a reason. These four fliers were sent out with the instructions to fit as much into eight minutes as possible, and that’s precisely what they do. Fans are treated to a CZCW-style spectacle of high spots, one after another, and most stay on their feet from start to finish. Unfortunately (and predictably, given what we’ve just seen), Vinny Cruz gets involved in the ending, as he whacks Marvel Malloy with an old-fashioned roll of quarters to help Tigre Salvaje score the pin at 8:12.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS:</strong> #2 Texas Rangers vs. #7 Texas Hangman and Jason Patterson</p><p> </p><p>

Harry Allen and Bradley Blaze make their debut as a tag team here, and while this is the worst of the first-round matches, much of that has to do with the relative greenness of their opponents. Allen and Blaze are never seriously threatened here, and they finish Hangman off at 7:55 with their new finisher: A nod to Chuck Norris known as the Roundhouse Kick Party.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Frederique</strong> arrives at the arena, SCW World Championship in hand. However, he’s greeted outside his limo by <strong>Doug Peak</strong>, who’s in no mood to entertain theatrics from his tag team partner in tonight’s main event.</p><p> </p><p>

DP: “Listen, pal. I’ve got good news and bad news.”</p><p> </p><p>

F: “Why so serious, Doug? We got this.”</p><p> </p><p>

DP: “That’s the good news. I’ve got your back if <strong>Frankie Perez</strong> and <strong>Masked Cougar</strong> gang up on you. I want to send them back down the pecking order just as much as you do…so I have no doubt we’ll get the win tonight.”</p><p> </p><p>

Peak’s lips form a wry smile as his eyes dart to the prize on Frederique’s shoulder.</p><p> </p><p>

DP: “The bad news is that you seem way too comfortable with that belt. And after I leave Perez and Cougar laying tonight, it’ll be my mission to make you as comfortable as humanly possible. I sincerely hope you know what’s coming.”</p><p> </p><p>

Peak exits as Frederique rolls his eyes.</p><p> </p><p>

F: “What’s coming next month is me on a beach somewhere sipping a Mojito as everyone else fights to see who gets to lose to me in April.”</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS:</strong> #1 Samoan Pit Bulls vs. #4 Going Coastal</p><p> </p><p>

This tells a really simple story, with the CZCW mainstays flying around the ring while Akima Brave and Toma try to ground them with impressive power moves. The crowd eats up the story-telling of the match and even gets some hope late, but the Pit Bulls catch Frankie-Boy Fernandez with a soul-crushing Dog Pound, and that’s enough for the pin at 8:08.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WINNERS:</strong> Samoan Pit Bulls, pinfall</p><p>

<strong>TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS:</strong> #2 Texas Rangers vs. #6 Wild Cats</p><p> </p><p>

Vinny Cruz wasted no time earlier in the night in becoming one of the most hated men on the SCW roster, and he wards off taunts from the rabid crowd throughout this match. Allen and Blaze, by contrast, continue to win over the crowd with their blend of experience and potential, but get undercut by cheap shots from their opponents whenever they attempt to gain momentum.</p><p> </p><p>

However, this backfires in a big way at 7:32. Referee Dwight Kumas gets bumped, and Cruz once again grabs his trusty roll of quarters with Jaguar holding Allen. However, Allen ducks, and Cruz’s fist rams into his client! Blaze clears the ring and wakes Kumas up, and Allen earns the pinfall.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WINNERS:</strong> Texas Rangers, pinfall</p><p>

<strong>TOURNAMENT FINALS:</strong> #1 Samoan Pit Bulls vs. #2 Texas Rangers</p><p> </p><p>

Unlike the prior tournament matches, this one gets a lot of time and is built slowly. Once again, the Texas Rangers are up against a formidable foe, and once again they inspire the crowd to believe in them. Bradley Blaze, in particular, is given many chances to shine, and the crowd gets drawn into the encounter…before Akima Brave catches Allen coming off the top rope and hits a Dog Pound at 18:10. That’s good for the pin and the titles.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WINNERS, AND NEW SCW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS:</strong> Samoan Pit Bulls, pinfall</p><p>

<strong>MATCH RATING:</strong> 53</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>MAIN EVENT:</strong> Frankie Perez and Masked Cougar vs. Frederique and Doug Peak</p><p>

*If Perez/Cougar win, there’s a three-way match for Frederique’s title next month. If Peak gets the pin or submission, he gets a title shot. If Frederique gets the pin or submission, he gets the month off.</p><p> </p><p>

In a happy accident, this match revealed Frederique and Doug Peak could have a real future as a tag team, as their chemistry was on-point. The crowd makes no secret how much it hates the SCW World Champion, and he’s roundly booed every time he tries an underhanded tactic. However, he gets his just due at 18:04. Peak has Perez pinned, but gets tagged in the leg by Frederique before the count of three. Frederique comes in, Peak takes exception…and Perez pops up to hit a P-Clutch for the pin.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WINNERS:</strong> Frankie Perez and Masked Cougar, pinfall</p><p>

<strong>MATCH RATING:</strong> 56</p><p> </p><p>

After the main event, <strong>Doug Peak</strong> waits for <strong>Frederique</strong> to get to his feet. The champion does, and lays into Peak blaming him for the loss. Peak responds in typical fashion, choke-slamming the champion as <strong>Frankie Perez</strong> and <strong>Masked Cougar</strong> smirk. Peak, however, makes no secret of his disdain for next month’s challengers, taunting them with shouts of, “YOU’RE NEXT!!!,” as he goes back up the ramp.</p><p> </p><p>

INTERLUDE

Mid-March

Northern Siberia

You don't come here, on your own free will, unless you don't want to be found. The unforgiving climate tends to weed out wimps, and there are reasons the Russian government has used this area as punishment for some of its most notorious prisoners.

All of which begs the question: Why is Christian Faith here?

He almost looks unrecognizable given the many layers he wears while trudging through the snow and ice. It's been a while since he's had to deal with weather like this, and he's incredibly uncomfortable as he moves to a large stone building that looks like a fortress.

“This must be the place,” he says to himself as he knocks on the door.

The knocks disturb the total silence that has been manufactured within the building. After a moment, a bundled-up old man opens the door.

“I'm looking for a tall guy,” Faith says. “Said he lives here now.”

Slowly, the old man responds by bringing his right index finger to his lips, which are pursed in a judgmental sneer. Knowingly, Faith rolls his eyes and gives the universal “tall, bald guy” sign, raising his right hand high above his head while keeping his left hand at his scalp to cover his hair.

This gets a more favorable response from the man in the door, who nods and motions for Faith to come in. He follows and heaves as deep a sigh as he can without annoying his counterpart before being directed to a bench, which the old man points to.

Faith obliges, sitting down and enjoying the heat coming from a nearby furnace. As he thaws out from the bone-chilling cold, he checks his phone...which has no cellular service but has somehow found a functional Wi-Fi network. Faith attempts to connect, but is asked for a password.

“Nyet.”

Faith sits bolt-upright in his chair and sees a familiar, shadowy figure in the doorway.

“Password. Nyet.”

A heavy pair of footsteps comes closer, and we quickly recognize the mountain of a man known around the world as MARAT KHOKLOV.

OjeVHdp.jpg

CF: “Nice digs. Really good welcoming committee, too.”

MK: “Not so loud. Old man judge.”

Khoklov shakes Faith's hand and sits down next to him. Christian speaks in soft tones, trying not to disturb the peace.

CF: “So let me get this straight. You sold off all your material possessions, put money into a wrestling company you won't see live, and came to the middle of nowhere...why, to freeze your butt off?”

MK: “Freed from burdens of world. Nobody bother me here. Except you.”

Khoklov may not have wrestled in years, but he still has the menacing glare that drove fear into the hearts of fans around the world. Even as a friend and business colleague, Faith knows he must tread carefully.

CF: “I've got good news. We've made money. Not a lot, but we're in the black.”

MK: “Hmm. This good. Unexpected.”

CF: “What, you thought I'd lose my shirt?”

MK: “No. Running business hard. How you do it?”

CF: “Guys work cheaper than they did when we were around. I've got guys working for $30 or $40 a shot. They're not well-known, but they're hungry. Unlike you, they WANT to be found.”

The Khoklov glare resurfaces, and Faith is reminded Russians aren't particularly well-known for having strong senses of humor.

CF: “The point is, that's allowing me to make a big announcement on the next show in a few days. You're watching online, right? We've set up a stream for all of the owners.”

MK: “Yes. Stream choppy. Reset router before show.”

A pause.

MK: “I'm recluse. Not idiot.”

CF: “We'll do that. You okay? I know a lot of guys who are worried about you.”

MK: “I'm okay. World tough. But so is Marat.”

CF: “Brought you something.”

Faith goes into his travel bag and flashes a bottle of clear liquid. Marat smiles.

MK: “That's good stuff. Thank you. I hide that. Old man crazy.”

CF: “What's his deal, anyway? Dude judged me for talking.”

MK: “Vow of silence.”

CF: “How long?”

MK: “Stalin.”

Faith laughs. Khoklov doesn't.

MK: “You should go. You go to Japan tonight?”

CF: “Yep. Can't believe they let him go.”

MK: “What is plan?”

CF: “I'm bringing him in for a night to start. Let's see if the crowd likes him. If they do, I'm all for bringing him back...but as you know, can't shove something down the fans' throats if they don't want to see it, right?”

MK: “I respect you, booker man.”

It's now, finally, that Khoklov allows himself a smile. He stands up to his full height and pulls a phone out from his robe.

MK: “I call you cab.”

CF: “I COULD'VE TAKEN A CAB?!?!”

A collective gasp is heard around the building. Nobody's yelled inside the stone walls...well, ever, but Faith's face is as bright as the fire burning in the furnace.

MK: “How long you walk?”

CF: “Maybe five miles from the train station?”

Khoklov roars with laughter that may as well shake the monastery. He presses a few buttons on his phone and nods his head.

MK: “Ten minutes. Nikita. Red Nissan.”

CF: “Gee thanks. Some host you are.”

MK: “Better than most around here.”

The old man has returned, and he's none too pleased with the behavior his guest has brought to his turf. Faith chuckles as he stands up and collects his things.

CF: “You know, Rocky knocked out Drago on his home turf. Just saying.”

Faith exits the monastery to wait for his car. Khoklov, meanwhile, retreats back to his life of solitude, one that's now only interrupted by business meetings and updates about a fledgling promotion half a world away.

OOC NOTES

- Early impressions are that certain changes have made it FAR easier for small promotions to turn profits. It definitely helps to have capable hands working for $30 or $40 a shot, and if travel costs aren't covered, that's an added bonus.

- The other thing I'm noticing is that the "keep strong" and "protect" instructions seem to be far more punitive with regard to match quality than they were in the 2016 game. I used it a few times on the last show in the last two matches, as I wanted to protect Blaze and keep Frederique strong. Doing so didn't kill either match, obviously, but those instructions did seem to knock things down a bit. Looks like I'll need to be pretty judicious with those instructions!

- I'll have the March card up either late tonight or early tomorrow for predictions.

Awesome work so far. You've got a reader in me. Bradley Blaze for the WIN!

Thanks so much! You're one of my favorite writers, and there's a lot of similarities between your NYCW diaries and my stuff. Blaze is a guy I'm certainly high on. I just hope he doesn't get poached until I can adequately tell the story I want to tell.

I am loving the bits with the investors. It's a brilliant way to inject some narratives as a break in between cards plus MK is comedy gold.

That's the idea! I've struggled in the past to produce stuff that gets engagement, so I'm going to cycle between bits with investors, news updates, and some other ideas I've got kicking around. Some guys are easier to write than others, for sure, but writing Marat wasn't hard. :)

<p>We’ll start things off with an always-fun OOC note. Unfortunately, the save file became unplayable for some reason (runtime error 3343). This is the second time I’ve run into this problem in just three game months. Thankfully, for the second time, a backup of the game WAS created…but it was from before Ides of March ran, so I need to go back and re-run it, which’ll take a little time. It’s really annoying, and an issue I never once had to deal with in TEW 16. If anyone out there has a fix for this beyond “run the backup and pray it saved in a convenient place,” let me know.</p><p> </p><p>

On the plus side, this’ll give folks a little more time to submit predictions for that card. The prize for these pick-em’s will be a profile on a worker/tag team of your choosing, courtesy of our resident wrestling writer, Grave Melter (no, we are not above parody where it is convenient to insert it!). Last show’s winner, neslo024, chose the Wild Cats, so off we go…</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">A Closer Look, with Grave Melter</span></strong></p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="3xvkxvh.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/3xvkxvh.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>El Jaguar</strong> and <strong>Tigre Salvaje, Jr.</strong>, form the tag team known as the Wild Cats. Individually, they’re extremely strong workers, but they’re best known for their tag team exploits in Mexico’s CILL and America’s CZCW and, most recently, SCW.</p><p> </p><p>

El Jaguar is just 29 years old and may still have some room for growth in him. He’s never going to set the world on fire with his promo work or appear on any telenovelas, but he’s a strong hand that seems built for success as part of a high-flying tag team.</p><p> </p><p>

Tigre Salvaje, Jr., meanwhile, seems like the older version of his tag team partner. Thanks to the experience gained by working in America and Mexico for 12 years, the second-generation luchador can work any conceivable kind of match with just about any opponent. If there’s any downside to him, it’s that, like his partner, he’s not a tremendous talker, and he’s not getting any younger to boot. While it wouldn’t be a shock if a bigger company took a chance on El Jaguar as a singles competitor, the window may have closed on a top-level run for his partner.</p><p> </p><p>

SCW has already taken a significant step to minimize one of the team’s weaknesses. <strong>Vinny Cruz</strong>, best known for his work in Queens of American Wrestling, was brought in by <strong>Christian Faith</strong> to manage several foreign workers and serve as their mouthpiece. While he’s far from a household name, early reviews are very promising. He hung with Faith in a strong introductory promo and played a big role on his first night in the company, getting involved in both of the Wild Cats’ matches. This gave the fans, who had been very appreciative of Jaguar and Tigre’s work, a reason to despise them and care more about what they do.</p><p> </p><p>

Time will tell just how far El Jaguar and Tigre Salvaje, Jr., will go. As far as SCW is concerned, it seems important to note that the tag team division, outside of current tag champions <strong>Akima Brave</strong> and <strong>Toma</strong>, is very face-heavy, with plenty of duos capable of putting together outstanding matches. This could set the luchadors up for a role as the long-term #2 heel team in the company, with the potential to improve should another business snap up the Samoan Pit Bulls (who are over in both America and Japan).</p>

Heads-up: I have NOT bailed on this. I wound up getting dental surgery late last week, and that knocked me out of commission through the weekend. Expect a show recap up tonight.

In the meantime, if you'd like to participate in the pick-em, feel free! You've got at least a few hours to do so.

March 2020, Week Three</p><p>

Attendance: 529</p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>MATCH #1:</strong> The Rock City Stars vs. Texas Hangman and Jason Patterson</p><p> </p><p>

After two straight losses to start their SCW careers, Rockin’ Ryan Turner and Stan Manna are eager to right the ship and get some momentum. They capitalize on that opportunity here against much younger opponents, ones who have lofty potential but clearly aren’t there yet. Ultimately, Manna pins Patterson with The Cover Version at 7:40.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>The Rock City Stars</strong> celebrate their victory in the middle of the ring, but the party is short-lived as a muscular man in a white t-shirt and blue jeans rushes the ring. While most of the crowd has no idea who he is, the smarks in the room quickly recognize him as <strong>JAMES DIAZ</strong>, and he makes his presence felt by steamrolling Turner and Manna before security can get to the ring. Satisfied, Diaz stomps back up the ramp, nostrils flared and his eyes locked in a piercing gaze.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>MATCH #2:</strong> Bradley Blaze vs. Desert Storm</p><p> </p><p>

It’s no secret SCW management is high on Bradley Blaze. The young cowboy gets an opportunity at some shine here, and he controls much of this contest before prevailing at 8:16 following a Dallas Drop.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WINNER:</strong> Bradley Blaze, pinfall</p><p>

<strong>Masa Kurata</strong> bounces down the aisle for his match, but he’s not alone. <strong>Vinny Cruz</strong> is at his side, microphone in hand, and he begins speaking as he walks down the aisle.</p><p> </p><p>

VC: “Yep! In case you can’t put two and two together, my client list has grown by one. I am now the executive consultant for Masa Kurata, one of the most promising young stars ever produced by the country of Japan. A tsunami that killed the business over there couldn’t stop him…and neither can anyone in SCW.”</p><p> </p><p>

Big boos from the crowd. Kurata sneers at the crowd from under his sunglasses as he enters the ring, with Cruz in close pursuit.</p><p> </p><p>

VC: “Now, <strong>Christian Faith</strong> is once again discriminating against my clients. Masa has taken time out of his busy schedule to fly halfway across the world and prove his superiority, only our fearless leader has refused to tell him his opponent. This ‘mystery opponent’ nonsense serves no purpose except to disrespect one of the biggest young stars in the…”</p><p> </p><p>

<em><span style="color:#FF0000;"><strong>FIRE-BALL</strong></span></em></p><p> </p><p>

Pitbull’s “Fireball” blares over the speakers, and out walks SCW’s newest official signing, <strong>AMAZING FIRE FLY</strong>. Before Cruz can get a word in, Fire Fly is in the ring, standing chest-to-chest with his client ahead of his debut match.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>MATCH #3:</strong> Amazing Fire Fly vs. Masa Kurata</p><p> </p><p>

No chemistry? No problem! While it’s clear these two aren’t on the same page, it’s also clear these are two of the most talented young workers on the planet today. In fact, Fire Fly busts out an entirely new move that dazzles the crowd. Unfortunately for him, it doesn’t help him with the match, as Masa prevails by pinfall at 7:32 following a K-HD.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WINNER:</strong> Masa Kurata, pinfall</p><p>

<strong>MATCH RATING:</strong> 53</p><p> </p><p>

- - -</p><p> </p><p>

The ring clears quickly, but <strong>Christian Faith</strong> stomps out, in no mood to celebrate the match he’s just seen.</p><p> </p><p>

CF: “<strong>James Diaz</strong>! Come out here right now, or you’ll never be able to show your face in SCW again.”</p><p> </p><p>

Faith stomps around the ring, and Diaz appears after a few moments. He takes his time sauntering down the aisle, and at this point, he’s getting booed pretty viciously.</p><p> </p><p>

CF: “For those of you who don’t know who this man is, this is James Diaz. His father, <strong>Raymond Diaz</strong>, is one of the toughest men I’ve ever shared a locker room with. If he wanted a job, all he had to do was pick up a phone and call me.</p><p> </p><p>

“James, I’ve known you’re going into the business. I’ve known you want to follow in your dad’s footsteps. Why did you do what you did?”</p><p> </p><p>

Faith shoves a microphone into Diaz’s chest…but the young man simply stands like a statue, unmoved.</p><p> </p><p>

CF: “…so that’s the way it’s gonna be. Fine. I’ve got a Plan B, and I don’t think you’re gonna like it.</p><p> </p><p>

“I’ve got a guest in the locker room. This guy just finished a decorated stint in Japan. He’s moved to the United States to see if he can make a go of it here. As a favor to me, he’s in the back, with his gear, and I’ve told him to be ready in case I need him. Turns out…I do.”</p><p> </p><p>

Faith points up the ramp. There’s silence for a few moments…until <strong>AKINORI KWAKAMI</strong> appears. The former face of PGHW, one of many casualties of budget cuts by that organization, soaks in the moment and walks to the ring to face the son of a man he’s battled against numerous times.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>MATCH #4 (surprise!!!):</strong> Akinori Kwakami vs. James Diaz</p><p> </p><p>

Kwakami coming out was a shock. The bigger shock, though, is that James Diaz controls this match from start to finish. His offense is vicious and violent, and the Japanese superstar is powerless to stop it. Diaz prevails at 8:30 following an Asian Thumb Spike, and the crowd is left shocked by what it has just seen.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WINNER:</strong> James Diaz, pinfall</p><p>

<strong>MATCH RATING:</strong> 33</p><p> </p><p>

- - -</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>MATCH #5:</strong> Harry Allen vs. Doug Peak</p><p> </p><p>

This match would be a main event for many independent promotions in the country, and both guys still have plenty of gas left in the tank. Harry Allen tries his darnedest to take down the monstrous Peak, but in the end, the latter man’s size is simply too much to overcome. Peak wins by pinfall at 10:21 following a House of Horrors.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WINNER:</strong> Doug Peak, pinfall</p><p>

<strong>MATCH RATING:</strong> 51</p><p> </p><p>

- - -</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Doug Peak</strong>’s hand gets raised, but he’s not done. He continues his vicious assault of <strong>Harry Allen</strong> and picks him up for a choke slam…but <strong>Bradley Blaze</strong> rushes to the ring for the save! The Texas Rangers unite to send Peak over the top rope, and Blaze checks on Allen as Peak backpedals up the ramp.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>MATCH #6:</strong> Going Coastal and The American Cobras vs. The Samoan Pit Bulls and The Wild Cats</p><p> </p><p>

While Akima Brave and Toma look outstanding when in the match, neither ultimately plays a role in its outcome. The other three are tasked to fly around the ring and create organized chaos, which they do very strongly. However, in the midst of the mayhem, Marvel Malloy catches Tigre Salvaje, Jr., in a Marvel Breaker, and that’s good enough for the pin at 10:51.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Going Coastal</strong> and the <strong>American Cobras</strong> celebrate in the ring, and <strong>Christian Faith</strong> suddenly appears at the top of the ramp.</p><p> </p><p>

CF: “Gentlemen! Very impressive. And I’ve got an announcement you’re going to like.</p><p> </p><p>

“I’ve come to an agreement with a new company called WrestleWorld. It’ll allow us to showcase our product, and the finest wrestlers in the world, on a global platform. If you watch, you’ll see a slick, well-produced show…and you’ll see more of them starting next month.</p><p> </p><p>

“We’re rolling out a new show, the first week of every month, called <em>SCW Live!</em> And you four guys…well, you’re going to be a main attraction. I’m putting you in a tag match, Going Coastal against the American Cobras. I know it’ll tear the house down…and the winners will get a shot at the Samoan Pit Bulls two weeks after that at One Wild Night.”</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>SCW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP:</strong> Frederique © vs. Frankie Perez vs. Masked Cougar</p><p> </p><p>

The crowd is STAUNCHLY against Frederique here, and for good reason, but nobody can justifiably say he can’t still go in the ring. Even in his mid-40’s, the most recognizable member of SCW’s roster more than keeps up with his two challengers, who double as two of the most talented workers on the independent circuit. Both Perez and Cougar look like new champions at several opportunities, but Frederique goes low on Cougar at 18:19 and rolls him up to retain his title.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>WINNER, AND STILL SCW WORLD CHAMPION:</strong> Frederique, pinfall</p><p>

<strong>Frederique</strong> celebrates as though he’s just climbed Mount Everest, but <strong>Frankie Perez</strong> is having none of it. He’s seen everything and super kicks Frederique over the top rope and onto the floor. This leaves the SCW World Championship belt in the ring, and Perez taunts Frederique with it to end the show.</p><p> </p><p>

Below is a summary of SCW Live! This isn't necessarily meant to be a top-tier show for the company. Instead, it's designed to build some angles while also giving some in-ring time to our younger guys (and, to be fair, giving us a potential "out" in case a talent gets poached between bigger events).

I won't be doing pick-ems for these shows. I'll just be posting recaps, and the first one is below.

Also, neslo024, you won the pick-em again, so PM me with who you'd like me to profile (or, alternatively, if you'd like an off-screen interlude with Christian Faith and a retired worker/someone who's out of the business).

SCW Live!

Week 1, April 2020

Attendance: 551

WrestleWorld viewers: 16,762

Christian Faith begins the show in the center of the ring, welcoming a worldwide audience to the first-ever edition of SCW Live! However, he's quickly interrupted by Vinny Cruz, still bitter about the disrespect his clients have received from upper management. Faith quickly responds by saying his crew can come out here right now and prove something to the world. A referee quickly turns up, and we're off and running with the program.

MATCH #1: Jay Silver, Joffy Laine, and Kip Keenan vs. Masa Kurata and the Wild Cats (w/Vinny Cruz)

This match doesn't get a lot of time, but it's heavy on action from several of SCW's most exciting young prospects. The Wild Cats, in particular, get plenty of time in the ring, and El Jaguar pins Silver at 6:54 following a Jaguar Suplex.

WINNERS: Masa Kurata and the Wild Cats, pinfall

MATCH RATING: 58

MATCH #2: Amazing Fire Fly and American Flash vs. Desert Storm and Texas Hangman

Creative just hasn't had much for American Flash, who's been shining in CZCW. Here, though, he gets paired with fellow high-flyer Amazing Fire Fly, and the two run circles around their much-bigger opponents. Ultimately, Hangman gets tripped up, and Flash scores the pin at 7:59 following a High Velocity Senton.

WINNERS: Amazing Fire Fly and American Flash, pinfall

MATCH RATING: 51

Texas Hangman and Desert Storm are left bickering in the ring, and their argument briefly turns into a shoving match. However, James Diaz comes down to the ring, and without saying a word, he manages to break up the scuffle. He directs both men backstage and enters the ring to prepare for his match.

MATCH #3: James Diaz vs. Jerry Pepper

Jerry Pepper was brought in on a one-night deal for one reason: James Diaz needed someone to destroy. The rookie plowed through Pepper with no difficulty at all and finished him off at 3:38 with an Asian Thumb Spike.

WINNER: James Diaz, pinfall

MATCH RATING: 19

James Diaz's work isn't done when the bell rings. He continues his vicious assault of Pepper, complete with several more Asian Thumb Spikes, until security runs down to the ring and ushers him backstage.

MATCH #4: Going Coastal vs. The American Cobras

This #1 contender match was a non-stop thrill ride, as longtime fans of both teams could have predicted. With a shot at the Samoan Pit Bulls on the horizon, all four guys let it all hang out over the course of a back-and-forth encounter. Ultimately, Marvel Malloy gets caught alone in the ring, and that's enough for him to get hit with a Coast-Liner by Frankie-Boy Fernandez at 12:55.

WINNERS: Going Coastal, pinfall

MATCH RATING: 66

MATCH #5: Frankie Perez vs. Masked Cougar

Simply put, it made sense to put these two together to headline the first edition of this show. Predictably, the two work hard, but disaster strikes near the end of the match, as Perez's jaw is broken. Somehow, he fights through the pain and winds up finishing Cougar by forcing him to tap out to the P-Clutch at 22:43.

WINNER: Frankie Perez, submission

MATCH RATING: 59

The plan is for Frankie Perez to use a post-match promo to challenge Frederique for the SCW World Championship at One Wild Night. However, Christian Faith runs out and has to help him through the segment due to his injury. Still, by hook or by crook, we wind up with our next SCW main event: Frederique defending his title in a one-on-one match against Frankie Perez.
