WWF 1987: Running Wild on You!

Recommended Posts

The year is 1987. One of the biggest events in the history of the wrestling business, WrestleMania III, has just come and gone, and Hulkamania is running wild on the World Wrestling Federation.

If people are interested, I'm going to run predictions for PPVs and maybe the occasional episode of TV, and the winner at the end of each year (so after each WrestleMania) will be allowed to pick a wrestler from the roster for me to push over the following year. I'm using a converted Golden Age mod by Genadi, with a few small tweaks I've made myself.

I plan on always keeping all of the following updated, so if you're not up to date with the diary then these links will contain spoilers.

Feel free to not read this of course, this is just to set the scene for anyone who is unfamiliar with the events of WM3 or are maybe a bit hazy on the details. I expect the first post-Mania show will be up in a day or two.

So what happened at WrestleMania III? (shamelessly stolen from Wikipedia)

WWF owner Vince McMahon claims that as he was about to announce "Welcome to WrestleMania III," he felt the spirit of his father Vincent J. McMahon, who had died three years earlier. After McMahon welcomed the audience, he introduced Aretha Franklin, who opened the show singing a rendition of "America the Beautiful."

The first match of the night was The Can-Am Connection (Rick Martel and Tom Zenk) versus Bob Orton Jr. and The Magnificent Muraco (with Mr. Fuji). This match ended when Martel gave Muraco a high cross-body with Zenk on his hands and knees giving Muraco what Gorilla Monsoon called "A little schoolboy trip from behind" allowing Martel to get the win for his team.

The next match that aired was Hercules (with Bobby "The Brain" Heenan in his corner) against Billy Jack Haynes in the "Full Nelson Challenge." The match ended when Haynes locked Hercules in the full nelson outside the ring and both were counted out. After the match, Heenan assaulted Haynes by kneeing him in the back after Haynes had applied the full nelson to Hercules outside the ring. Haynes then chased Heenan into the ring, where Hercules then blindsided Haynes with his chain, hitting him a number of times with it before locking a bloodied Haynes into his own full nelson.

The Mixed Tag Team Match between King Kong Bundy and his professional wrestling team of Lord Littlebrook and Little Tokyo against Hillbilly Jim and his own team of The Haiti Kid and Little Beaver was next. The rules were that only midgets could fight midgets and that neither Bundy nor Hillbilly was allowed to attack the midgets, though at one point Bundy tagged in and Little Beaver refused to tag out immediately, even hitting the 458 lb (208 kg) "Walking condominium" with a dropkick to no effect before bailing with a tag to Hillbilly Jim. King Kong Bundy's team was disqualified when Bundy attacked Little Beaver because Bundy was not supposed to be in the ring with the midgets. After Beaver had "attacked" Bundy on occasion during the match, he finally got caught and Bundy attacked Little Beaver, hitting him with a body slam before dropping an elbow across his chest.

The "Loser Must Bow" match between the Junkyard Dog and Harley Race (with Bobby Heenan and "The Queen of Wrestling" The Fabulous Moolah) followed. Prior to the match "Mean" Gene Okerlund interviewed Heenan, Race, and Moolah backstage, where Moolah predicted that Junkyard Dog would have to bow to the King as he is supposed to do. Bobby then gave Moolah the crown and told her to put it on the King's head after the match, "As only the Queen of Wrestling can do". Junkyard Dog came out to the ring to a big ovation in the Silverdome. During the match, the two battled back and forth, with Race even trying unsuccessfully to give the prone Dog a falling headbutt which naturally failed. Following this Race recovered enough to give the Junkyard Dog a belly to belly suplex when he was distracted by Bobby Heenan to get the win. Due to the pre-match stipulation, JYD did a little bow and then hit Race from the blindside with a steel chair to a rousing ovation from the crowd. After attacking Race, Junkyard Dog took the King's royal robe and left the ring with it in hand to a standing ovation.

The next match was The Dream Team (Brutus Beefcake and Greg "The Hammer" Valentine), with Luscious Johnny V and Canadian strong man Dino Bravo in their corner, against The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, Jacques and Raymond. Ray Rougeau started off the match by locking up with Beefcake. The two men later tagged out, and Valentine brawled with Jacques Rougeau as Bravo looked on from the outside of the ring. Raymond performed a sleeper hold on Valentine and was followed by Beefcake jumping off the ropes and accidentally hitting The Hammer with a double axe handle. The Rougeau Brothers gave Valentine a double team move, but the referee was arguing with Beefcake. The match ended when Dino Bravo jumped off the top rope and hit Raymond while he was pinning Valentine, then rolling Valentine on top of him for the win. The Dream Team argued for most of the match, which led to Valentine, Bravo and Luscious Johnny departing together, without Beefcake.

Footage of an interview with Rowdy Roddy Piper was aired as Piper made his way to the ring to face "Adorable" Adrian Adonis, who was accompanied by "The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart, in Piper's retirement match. Piper and Adonis began the match by attacking each other with Piper's belt. Adonis put a sleeper hold on Piper in the middle of the ring and released the hold prior to Piper's arm going down for a 3rd time, thinking that he won the match. When Jimmy Hart got in the ring to celebrate with Adonis, Brutus Beefcake came to the ring to help Piper recover, and Piper attacked Adonis and performed a sleeper hold of his own. Piper got the victory, and after the match was over, Brutus got in the ring and cut Adrian Adonis' hair as Piper held Jimmy Hart down. After being woken by Beefcake and seeing himself in the mirror he had brought to the ring that Piper was holding, Adonis hit the mirror and chased Piper around the ring before leaving the ring in embarrassment with Hart using his jacket to cover Adonis' head.

Up next was a six-man tag team match featuring former referee Danny Davis (in his debut as a WWF wrestler) and the WWF Tag Team Champions, The Hart Foundation (Bret "Hitman" Hart and Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart), against The British Bulldogs (Dynamite Kid and Davey Boy Smith) and Tito Santana with Matilda the Bulldog in their corner. As a referee Davis' bias towards heel wrestlers had led to the Bulldogs losing the tag titles to the Harts and also led to Santana losing the WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship to "Macho Man" Randy Savage. The Bulldogs had many near-falls, yet Neidhart broke up most of them. After all three members of the Bulldogs/Santana team had got a measure of revenge on Davis, all six wrestlers ended up brawling in the ring. Danny Davis recovered and hit Davey Boy with Jimmy Hart's megaphone and pinned him for the win.

"The Natural" Butch Reed's making his pay-per-view debut against Koko B. Ware, was the following match. Reed won the match with a rollup (and a handful of tights) after a high cross-body from Koko. After the contest, Reed's manager Slick got in the ring and attacked Koko B. Ware with his cane, but Tito Santana quickly rushed to the ring and stopped Slick, and ripped some of his clothes off. Slick retreated as Reed got back in the ring, only for Reed to get a double drop kick from Koko and Santana.

The next contest was a title match involving reigning WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion Randy "Macho Man" Savage (with Miss Elizabeth) and Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat (with George "The Animal" Steele). The match itself lasted for nearly fifteen minutes. At one point, Savage was about to use the ring bell as a weapon but was stopped by Steele who knocked him off of the top rope. When Savage attempted to give Steamboat a scoop slam, Steamboat reversed it into a small package to get the win and become the new WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Champion, marking the first time in WrestleMania history that the Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship changed hands. This match is considered by many to be one of the greatest matches in WWE history.

The tenth match of the night was between The Honky Tonk Man (with "Colonel" Jimmy Hart) and Jake "The Snake" Roberts, who along with his pet Python "Damien", had Detroit native Alice Cooper in his corner. When Jake went for the DDT, Honky Tonk Man's manager Jimmy Hart pulled Roberts' legs, and the Honky Tonk Man rolled up Roberts from behind, held on to the ropes, and pinned him for the win. After the match Roberts narrowly missed hitting Honky with his own guitar, smashing it against a ring post and causing Honky to run off down the aisle, leaving Hart alone in the ring. Alice Cooper got in the ring and with Roberts' holding Hart in a Full Nelson, attacked him with Roberts' python Damien.

Ring announcer Howard Finkel then introduced "Mean" Gene Okerlund to the crowd. Okerlund then announced the indoor attendance record of 93,173.

The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff (with Slick) were in action next, against The Killer Bees ("Jumping" Jim Brunzell and B. Brian Blair). Slick asked all of the fans to rise to respect Nikolai Volkoff's singing of the Soviet National Anthem, and when Volkoff began singing, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan came to the ring with his two-by-four, which had a tiny American flag attached to it, got on the microphone and said that Volkoff was not going to sing because America is the land of the free and the home of the brave. While the match ensued, Duggan stayed at ringside. When The Iron Sheik locked a camel clutch on Brunzell, Duggan, who was chasing Volkoff around the ring and finally into it, stopped and hit an unsuspecting Sheik across the back with his 2x4 in front of the referee, resulting in The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff winning the bout by disqualification.

In what was billed as the "biggest main event in sports entertainment," the final match pitted WWF World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan defending the title against André the Giant (with Bobby Heenan). Howard Finkel introduced the guest ring announcer, Bob Uecker, who in turn introduced the guest timekeeper, Entertainment Tonight host Mary Hart. The fans booed André heavily and pelted him and his manager Bobby Heenan with trash as they rode the cart to the ring. In contrast, Hogan, who walked to the ring, came out to a huge ovation. Approximately two minutes into the match, Hogan attempted to body slam André, but he was unable to lift The Giant and nearly lost the match when Andre fell on him and almost pinned him. After the match had battled back and forth, André gave Hogan an Irish whip to the far side of the ring and attempted a big boot on Hogan, but Hogan ducked it and came off the ropes to give André a clothesline to take him off his feet for the first time in the match. Hogan then "Hulked up" and scoop slammed the 525 lb (238 kg) Giant before hitting the ropes and executing his patented leg drop pin to get the win and retain the championship.

Thanks for reading, and I hope you stick around!

KingKennit's Pro Wrestling News and Rumours

Big changes are coming

BCeP4Tu.jpg

The World Wrestling Federation could be about to change the landscape of professional wrestling forever. Their flagship TV show, Superstars of Wrestling, will be moving from one hour to two starting from the first post-Mania episode this Thursday, and the show will feature fewer squash matches and more bouts between established talent, and could even sometimes see payoffs to feuds. The company will also be introducing a revolutionary new pay-per-view schedule, running between 8 and 12 pay-per-views every year. These pay-per-views will of course include the already established WrestleMania, on top of 4 new annual shows entitled King of the Ring, SummerSlam, Survivor Series and the Royal Rumble. The rest of the PPV schedule will be filled out with shorter shows entitled In Your House. It is thought that there will be 10 PPVs between now and WrestleMania IV, including WrestleMania itself.

A new President

LijcA1k.jpg

The WWF are set to move Gorilla Monsoon away from the commentary desk and into a new role of on-screen president, replacing Jack Tunney. The move is not an indictment of Monsoon's announcing ability, rather that the company wants a more charismatic and recognisable face to fill the president role, as it's a role that will be seen on television much more often than in the past due to the change in the television and pay-per-view schedule. It is thought that UWF announcer Jim Ross is the man primed to replace Monsoon at the announce desk, and he could take the reins as early as this Thursday's episode of Superstars.

Developmental

dGCAIpU.jpg

The WWF are in the process of setting up a new promotion for the sole purpose of getting young wrestlers trained and ready to move up to the main roster. The promotion will be based in Florida, and will be given the very imaginative name of Florida Championship Wrestling. The WWF have already started snapping up talent that they consider the stars of tomorrow, and they will also be sending some current workers to FCW to undergo further training, chief among them Tom Magee, who, according to a source within the WWF, is a man they want to make a valuable member of the roster whatever it takes. A relatively unknown AWA employee by the name of Eric Bischoff has been given the role of head booker.

WWF Superstars of Wrestling

Thursday week 1 April 1987

ZYyIybq.jpg

The broadcast kicks off with a video package celebrating the short-lived but historic WWF career of “Rowdy” Roddy Piper following his retirement match last Sunday at WrestleMania III, including a compilation of the best Piper's Pit moments, as well as the main events of The War to Settle the Score and WrestleMania I, his boxing match with Mr T at WrestleMania II, and finally his vanquishing of Adrian Adonis 5 days ago. Good luck Hot Rod.

Jesse “The Body” Ventura is joined by a new face at the announce position, Jim Ross, and the new look commentary team welcomes everybody to a new era in the WWF. They preview the matches we have in store for tonight, including George “The Animal” Steele versus Greg “The Hammer” Valentine, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan and “Cowboy” Bob Orton will all be in action, and the main event will feature Billy Jack Haynes looking to get revenge on Hercules in a rematch of the full nelson challenge from WrestleMania. Hulk Hogan will also be here at the end of the show to celebrate last weekend's prodigious victory and to discuss what's next. But first up, the newly appointed president of the World Wrestling Federation, our very own Gorilla Monsoon, has a few announcements to make.

LijcA1k.jpg

Gorilla Monsoon thanks JR and Jesse from the middle of the ring. He echoes what they said about this being a new era for the WWF, and confirms the recent rumours that the television and pay-per-view schedules will be drastically changing. He announces that the next pay-per-view will be the first of many “In Your House” events and will be held on the second Sunday of May. Finally he acknowledges the universal praise that the Intercontinental title match between Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat has been receiving from all corners, and is excited to announce that the first match confirmed for In Your House will be a rematch between the Macho Man and the Dragon.

George “The Animal” Steele
vs
Greg “The Hammer” Valentine
(w/ Johnny V)

Speaking of the Intercontinental title match, the man who was in Ricky Steamboat's corner for that match is in action here against the no-nonsense Greg Valentine. The Animal is up to all his old tricks, proudly displaying his ludicrous green tongue and munching on the turnbuckle pads. Greg Valentine tolerates this for a while, but soon kicks things up a notch and locks in the figure four for the win.

After the match Randy Savage makes his way to the ring, picks up the ring bell on his way, and uses it to attack The Animal. He starts to lay in kicks to the prone Steele but Ricky Steamboat hits the ring before his third kick even lands. Steamboat tries to launch himself at Savage but Greg Valentine holds him off. Savage gets in a few more stomps and runs back up the aisle while Valentine is still restraining the furious Steamboat. The Dragon breaks free of Valentine's grip and drops to his knees to tend to the fallen Animal. Greg Valentine walks away with a conniving look on his face as we go to a commercial break.

We return from the break with “Mean” Gene Okerlund standing outside a locker room with crashing sounds coming from within. He says that during the commercial break, Randy Savage and Greg Valentine both headed straight for their cars and left the arena, and he's going to try to get a word with Steamboat. He knocks on the door and The Dragon opens with a face like thunder. He tries his best to calm himself and keeps his voice as still as possible as he informs Okerlund that he's not in the right frame of mind to conduct an interview right now, but he does manage to promise that Savage and Valentine will both pay, before closing the door. Mean Gene hands it back to the announcers for the next match.

“Mean” Gene is backstage with Velvet McIntyre. She says a new dawn is coming for the women of the WWF, that last weekend will be the last time a WrestleMania will ever fail to feature a single women's match, and that she will be front and centre in the revolution. It's time to do away with the old and make way for the new, so she's officially laying down a challenge for The Fabulous Moolah's title.

Back to the announcers now, and Jesse Ventura says there's an exciting new arrival coming to the World Wrestling Federation. There will be a vignette from the man himself when we return from the break.

Two men are standing in a very high end jewellery store. The first man picks up a ring set with a large diamond and starts to softly cry. He tells his friend that this is the one. This is the ring for the love of his life, the ring that will bind her to him for the rest of their lives. His friend looks at the ring in awe, and sounds a little choked up himself as he agrees, it's perfect.

A6juUPK.jpg

All of a sudden, a hand comes from out of the frame and snatches the ring from the man's hand. A smug looking man in an expensive suit takes the ring to the counter and starts to take his money out to pay. The groom-to-be stands slack-jawed in shock for a few moments, before coming to his senses and storming over to the stranger. “Can I help you?” the stranger asks, and the groom-to-be demands his ring back at once. “Oh, sorry, was this yours? Well, perhaps this will change your mind”. The stranger takes a stack of $100 bills from his money clip and hands the man 5 bills, and the man looks dumbstruck. “Oh, not enough?” and he hands him another 5 bills. “I'm sure that will take care of it”. The groom-to-be give a dazed nod and thanks the suited stranger, however his friend is not so easy, in fact he's furious at what he's just seen. He asks the groom-to-be what he thinks he's doing, giving up on the ring that was so perfect it had reduced him to tears a few moments before, all for the sake of a little cash. The situation looks like it could really start to escalate, when the stranger says two words that stop the angry man dead in his tracks. “Oh Sid?”

5YgO8yD.jpg

A huge mountain of a man approaches the angry friend and fixes him with a stare. “Are we going to have a problem?” The Million Dollar Man asks. The man stutters out a “no”, before looking around for the groom-to-be only to find out he's already fled the store. The man follows suit and backs away slowly until he reaches the door, never taking his eyes off the hulking Sid. The Million Dollar Man turns to face the camera, and tells us not to be upset with the lovebird who sold out the love of his life for a bit of easy money, or with the friend who felt his loyalty run down his leg at the sight of Sid here, because whether it's fear or it's cold hard cash, everybody's got their price.

We're back to the arena and Jim Ross is disgusted with the arrogance of this Million Dollar Man. Jesse Ventura strongly disagrees, he thinks The Million Dollar Man is brilliant and says it will be a breath of fresh air to have a wrestler in the company he can relate to so easily. JR wonders out loud what exactly he's signed up for working alongside Ventura, and then hands over to the ring announcer for the introductions to the next match.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts
vs
Jacques Rougeau

Fresh from his win and humiliation of The Honky Tonk Man, Jake Roberts is wrestling like he doesn't have a care in the world, and he's in fine form here. There's a lot of playing up to the crowd from The Snake, and after toying for his prey for most of the match, he hits the DDT and gets the win.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts

While Jake starts to whip his snake out to entertain the fans after the match, The Honky Tonk Man appears behind him and lays him out with a guitar shot to the back of the head. Roberts may have wrestled like he was no longer concerned about The Honky Tonk Man, but the same clearly can't be said going the other way. The Honky Tonk Man doesn't seem to be done with Jake Roberts by a long shot.

Next we go backstage to Bobby Heenan and Harley Race. Heenan is furiously swearing vengeance on Junkyard Dog for stealing the King's royal robe, and demands he give it back to its rightful owner, Harley Race. Race is angry that JYD got the best of him at WrestleMania and says he will put that right the first opportunity he gets, but he doesn't mention the robe even once.

“Cowboy” Bob Orton
(w/ Mr Fuji) vs
“Hacksaw” Jim Duggan

The commentators put over Duggan's actions at WrestleMania when he interrupted Nikolai Volkoff's rendition of the Soviet national anthem. Duggan flies out of the gate and gets the better of the early stages, but Orton Jr takes control before long and stays in control for the majority of the match. He looks like he has it won with a sleeper hold, as the referee checks Duggan and his arm drops twice, but the third time it stays in the air and Hacksaw starts to rally. He breaks out of the sleeper and gains the upper hand. He looks like he could be about to get the win, when suddenly Nikolai Volkoff and the Iron Sheik attack him and the match is thrown out.

Orton rolls out of the ring and makes his way to the back while Volkoff and The Iron Sheik beat down Duggan. Duggan tries fighting back but the odds are too stacked against him and it seems like there's no hope for Hacksaw. That is until Butch Reed runs down the ramp and tackles The Iron Sheik. With the numbers evened out, Reed and Duggan are able to fight off Volkoff & Sheik and they bail to the back. Jim Ross doesn't know what to make of this development, because Nikolai Volkoff, The Iron Sheik and Butch Reed all share the same manager, Slick, and Slick himself looks like he doesn't know what to make of the situation either. Duggan looks suspicious and doesn't take his eyes off of Butch Reed, until Slick eventually convinces Reed to come backstage with him.

We're back with Mean Gene again, and this time he's interviewing Brutus Beefcake, who is holding a pair of comically large shears. Beefcake touches briefly on Greg Valentine, Dino Bravo and Johnny V turning their backs on him at WrestleMania, but says he's already put that behind him and he doesn't need them. He taunts Adrian Adonis about the fact that Beefcake and Roddy Piper cut his hair last weekend, and says if Adonis wants to try to get his own back then the offer is there, and he snaps his shears twice. Mean Gene pitches back to the announcers for the main event.

Hercules
(w/ Bobby “The Brain” Heenan & Paul Orndorff) vs
Billy Jack Haynes

As the bell rings, the announcers explain what happened between these two at WrestleMania for anybody who missed it. That match went to a double countout, and Hercules attacked Haynes after the match, and this match represents a chance for Billy Jack Haynes to get even right away. Just like the Mania match, both men are trying to prove whose full nelson is stronger, so there are lots of attempts to lock on that move. All of Hercules' attempts are foiled by Haynes' strength, but most of Haynes' attempts are stopped by Bobby Heenan distracting the referee and Paul Orndorff hitting Haynes from behind. On the third time of this happening, the ref turns around in time to catch Orndorff and he orders him to the back. Haynes locks on his full nelson one final time, and jerks Hercules around a few times until it becomes clear Hercules has passed out.

Billy Jack Haynes

As everyone makes their way to the back, Jim Ross talks a bit about Hulk Hogan's achievement of beating Andre the Giant, he says he's never witnessed anything quite like it in his career in this sport. He comments on the sense of anticipation in the arena for Hogan's victory celebration which will take place any moment. As if on cue, “Real American” hits and the crown goes wild.

krlnOZW.jpg

The immortal Hulk Hogan makes his way to the ring and takes his time doing so, basking in the adoration of all the fans in the building. When he finally makes his way into the ring, he hits all of his signature poses, and then calls for a microphone from ringside. He thanks the fans and says that it was because of them that he was able to win. He drew from the power of all 93,000 Hulkamaniacs in the Pontiac Silverdome and that's what gave him the strength to slam the big stinky Giant.

ogbzTtH.jpggpvDiPw.jpg

At these words, the colossal Andre the Giant starts to make his way to the ring, with Bobby Heenan in tow. At first Hogan looks annoyed at his moment being interrupted, but he quickly puts a smile on his face and makes a beckoning motion to Andre. Andre steps over the top rope like it's 2 feet from the ground and faces up to Hogan. Hogan puts the mic to his mouth to say something but before he can utter a word, Andre delivers a huge chop to his head. He starts to stomp on Hogan's chest when security bombard the ring and try to hold Andre off. To a man, Andre sends all of them flying back out through the ropes, and continues stomping on Hogan.

LijcA1k.jpg

Next up a series of wrestlers hit the ring, and the WWF president himself Gorilla Monsoon is walking out after them with a look of anger on his face. Jim Duggan, Koko B. Ware, Siva Afi and The Young Stallions all try to stop Andre but they all go the way of the security. Gorilla Monsoon grabs a mic and enters the ring, he says that if Andre doesn't stop right now he'll have no choice but to suspend him indefinitely. This does stop Andre, and he turns to face Monsoon. He bares down on him and aims a huge chop at the president which he narrowly avoids by jumping back out under the top rope. This distraction gives enough time for Jim Duggan and Paul Roma to pull Hogan out of the ring and help him back up the ramp, and the show goes off the air with Andre the Giant left alone in the ring, and Bobby Heenan at ringside with a look of shocked concern on his face.

WWF Superstars of Wrestling

Thursday week 2 April 1987

ZYyIybq.jpg

TjfD5qe.jpglvykkVO.jpg

Jim Ross and Jesse Ventura welcome us to second of two (unintentional) 90 minute shows before moving to a full 2 hour time slot next week, and break the news that president Gorilla Monsoon has suspended Andre the Giant from all WWF programming indefinitely after his attack on Hulk Hogan and attempted attack on the president himself last week. They also run down the four matches on the card tonight. We'll see Billy Jack Haynes take on the Magnificent Muraco, “Macho Man” Randy Savage faces Tito Santana and our main event will see Ricky Steamboat defending his Intercontinental title against “Mr Wonderful” Paul Orndorff. But up first, another title defence as the Hart Foundation put their tag titles on the line against the Can-Am Connection.

The champions spend the majority of this match in control, making frequent tags and keeping Tom Zenk firmly in their half of the ring. Eventually Zenk does manage to break free and gets the hot tag to Rick Martel. Martel cleans house and the Can-Am Connection gain a measure of control for a few minutes, as they play the Foundation at their own game and keep Bret Hart penned in. After a couple minutes of this, Bret reverses an Irish whip attempt from Martel and the Hart Foundation's dominance resumes. Martel manages to break away and dive for a tag to Tom Zenk, but Zenk is arguing with Jimmy Hart and isn't even paying attention to his teammate in the ring. Bret Hart drags Rick Martel back over to his half of the ring and locks on the Sharpshooter for the win.

Martel and Zenk make their way back up the ramp arguing, and they pass the British Bulldogs and none other than “Superstar” Billy Graham coming the other way. Graham grabs a microphone and the three of them enter the ring. Graham announces that he's now representing the British Bulldogs as their manager, and his clients want what they are due after the Hart Foundation cheated them out of a win at WrestleMania, they want a shot at the tag titles. Jimmy Hart says they're under no obligation to give the Bulldogs anything, and the Foundation leave the ring. The Bulldogs look like they want to attack the Hart Foundation as they are leaving, but Billy Graham stops them and gives them a look that plainly says “leave it to me.”

“Mean” Gene Okerlund is backstage with the Heenan Family. Bobby Heenan wants Hulk Hogan to know that he blames him for the suspension of his marquee client, Andre the Giant, and he's not going to let that go. The Heenan Family leave the area and Mean Gene welcomes Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. Mean Gene asks Steamboat about his IC title defence tonight but Steamboat doesn't want to talk about that, he wants to talk about Randy Savage and Greg Valentine. He says that Savage will regret what he did to George Steele when In Your House rolls around and he finds himself across the ring from The Dragon. He also wants to know why Greg Valentine did what he did, what did Valentine have to gain from preventing Steamboat from saving his friend? Either way, Valentine will pay too.

At this moment, Greg Valentine throws himself at Ricky Steamboat and, catching him unawares, manages to get the better of him. “Oh I'll pay? Well, bring it on. You and me next week, Steamboat!” He then lands a vicious stomp to Steamboat's knee before leaving.

Billy Jack Haynes
vs
The Magnificent Muraco
(w/ Mr Fuji)

Billy Jack Haynes has some good momentum coming into this one after getting his revenge on Hercules last week, and he looks to keep that going by taking this match right to the Magnificent one. Muraco uses his experience to slow the match down and sap Haynes' momentum with a series of rest holds. Haynes makes a comeback and looks like he is about to lock on the full nelson when Muraco brings his heel crashing into the crotch of Haynes with the ref in the wrong position to see it. He then hits the Hawaiian Hammer piledriver, and pins Billy Jack with his feet on the ropes for leverage.

We're back to the announcers, and Jesse Ventura says this is the part of the show he's been looking forward to the most, we're going to hear from the Million Dollar Man. JR seems less thrilled about this than Ventura does, but he tells the production team to run the video all the same.

A6juUPK.jpg5YgO8yD.jpg

The Million Dollar Man and his bodyguard Sid are sitting in the back of a car with a posh interior. The Million Dollar Man apologises for not properly introducing himself last week and says his name is Ted DiBiase. People always say money is the root of all evil but he's here to tell you that it's not. With money he can have anything he wants. He can buy happiness, love, he can even buy you. Case in point, just look at Sid. While he's cutting this promo he's absent-mindedly playing with a stack of money, and he accidentally gives himself a paper cut. “Gah! Driver, get me to a nearby medical facility right now!”

DiBiase is cradling his cut finger as he and Sid enter a waiting room with sick and wounded people everywhere. There is a dull moaning coming from people with broken bones, burns and more, but Ted DiBiase wants to see a doctor right away. He approaches the woman at the desk and demands to see a doctor, but the woman gestures to all the afflicted littering the room and says that won't be possible. DiBiase says that she doesn't understand, he's the Million Dollar Man! He puts down a hundred dollar bill but she pushes it away, he puts down another and she takes longer to think about it, but still pushes it away and says that it's not possible. He puts another three bills down and asks “how about now?” The receptionist looks guilty but she says she'll see what she can do and she turns away to make a phone call. An injured man who has been watching this exchange starts to stand up with an angry expression on his face, but Sid takes a few steps towards him and he quickly sits back down. The Million Dollar man turns to the camera and tells us not to be upset with the receptionist, she did the same thing that anyone would have done in her position. “She has her price, just the same as every one of you have yours. Everybody's got a price, for the Million Dollar Man.”

We now cut to a video that was recorded backstage last week after Butch Reed saved Jim Duggan from an attack by Nikolai Volkoff and the Iron Sheik. Slick is sitting in a locker room with his clients Sheik and Volkoff, and they're absolutely incensed. First of all they want to know why Reed sided against them, and second of all they want to know why Slick let him drive home before letting them confront him. Slick's voice is filled with forced patience as if he is talking to two tantruming toddlers, and he says he's sure there is a logical explanation and that Butch Reed isn't siding against them at all. He will get them all together once tempers have calmed down and give Reed a chance to explain himself to all of them. Volkoff and Sheik don't seem to be listening and they continue to make garbled angry noises.

“Macho Man” Randy Savage
(w/ Miss Elizabeth) vs

A good back and forth match here with surprisingly very few shenanigans. On multiple occasions it looks like Savage will cheat to get the upper hand, but always a look or a gesture from Miss Elizabeth seems to convince him otherwise. There is no interference from Ricky Steamboat, leading to the commentators suggesting Greg Valentine could really have inflicted a serious injury on him. The finish sees the Macho Man hit a clothesline, then climb up top to hit the big elbow drop to get the win fair and square.

JYD says if Harley Race is so desperate to get his hands on that fancy robe of his, he can come the Dog's way for a butt whooping next week, and if he wins (which he won't), he can have the thing back. Harley Race enters the frame and says that to be perfectly honest he doesn't give a damn about the stupid robe, but he will happily take the opportunity to slap the taste out of Junkyard Dog's mouth next week. The match starts with some stalling from Paul Orndorff, seemingly he isn't really prepared for a match against Hulk Hogan. When he gets back in the ring, Hogan offers a test of strength, and Orndorff responds with a knee to the gut to take control of the early stages. Hogan keeps breaking out and rallying but Bobby Heenan continually thwarts him with trips and distractions. In the end, Hogan decides that Orndorff's attacks aren't hurting him any more and he starts to hulk up.

Hercules comes out of nowhere while the Brain distracts the referee and he and Orndorff overwhelm Hogan. Orndorff holds Hogan's arms behind his back as Hercules wraps his chain around his fist. JR and Jesse Ventura welcome us to the show and begin to preview the matches in store over the next two hours, when they are interrupted by Hulk Hogan's music.

krlnOZW.jpg

The crowd explodes as the Hulkster makes his way to the ring to start the show. He grabs a mic after some posing and flexing, and the music stops. Hogan says he can see where this is going. He defeated Andre the Giant at WrestleMania, Paul Orndorff last week and Hercules was eyeing him up at the end of last week's show like he was a big piece of meat with a moustache and a couple of 24 inch pythons. He can see that he's going to have to run through every member of the Heenan family one by one, and he's more than happy to do so. He invites Hercules to get his butt out here so they can do this right now, brother. Hercules accepts the challenge, and makes his way to the ring accompanied by Bobby Heenan and King Kong Bundy.

For the first few minutes, this match is very even, with both men trading strikes and power moves. It looks like Hogan is getting a measure of control over the match, but then Bobby Heenan jumps up onto the apron, distracting the referee, and King Kong Bundy nails Hogan from behind. From then on, Hercules has Hogan right where he wants him for the majority of the rest of the match, until Hogan hulks up and makes a comeback. Slick says now that tempers have calmed down after what happened 2 weeks ago, they need to talk about this and get it all out in the open. Slick stands up and shouts back at Sheik, telling him to be quiet, then he asks Butch Reed calmly why he saved Jim Duggan from the attack from Volkoff and Sheik. Reed says there's no big explanation, he just thinks Sheik and Volkoff were being huge jerks and Duggan didn't do anything wrong when he interrupted Volkoff's rendition of the Soviet national anthem at WrestleMania. The latest Million Dollar Man video starts with a shot of an outdoor swimming pool, with parents sunbathing and children playing in the pool. Ted DiBiase and Sid are walking down a hallway, DiBiase talking excitedly about their plans to catch some rays by the pool. He has a big smile on his face the whole time, but when they emerge outside and see how busy the pool is, his face drops. “Oh no, this won't do at all. Public pool huh? We'll see how public it really is.” They pay a visit to the pool manager and ask him how much it would take to get all these little brats out of the pool so he and Sid could get a bit of peace and quiet. The manager says it's not possible, it's a public pool and these people are tax payers, he can't just tell them to leave. DiBiase says he pays more in taxes in a month than these people earn in a year, and puts down two 100 dollar bills. The pool manager pushes them back and repeats that it's a public pool. DiBiase puts down another three bills and says that the chlorine levels look a little high to him. The manager guiltily takes the money, grabs his whistle and walks to the edge of the pool. He blows his whistle while Sid shouts for all the brats to scram and DiBiase stands there with his hands on his hips and a huge self-satisfied grin on his face. A man, probably the father of one of the kids, steps to DiBiase to complain. DiBiase says “Sid, this man looks like he's getting a little hot, why don't you show him the way to the pool to cool off.” Sid takes a step towards the man, who steps back and ends up falling into the pool by himself. There is then a small time jump and the Million Dollar Man is lounging in a deck chair being served a cocktail by the pool manager while Sid dives into the pool. DiBiase tells us not to be mad at the pool manager, he just did what anyone would have done. Everybody's got a price for the Million Dollar Man.

KingKennit's Pro Wrestling News & Rumours

What on earth is a triangle match?

cvmw0Qq.jpg

At the end of this past episode of Superstars of Wrestling, WWF president Gorilla Monsoon announced that Ricky Steamboat, Randy Savage and Greg Valentine will all be facing each other at In Your House in something called a triangle match, and many wrestling fans are left scratching their heads as to how that could possibly work. Apparently, the rules of this match will be as follows. All three men will not be legal at the same time, rather it will be something like a tag match, where two men are legal and the third will have to stand on the apron until he is tagged in or he tags himself in, and the match will be one fall rather than an elimination match. The WWF have told us us that this won't be a regular occurrence, and we shouldn't be surprised if we don't see more than one of these matches in a whole year. One more piece of news is that the WWF have landed on a tag line for this pay-per-view, and it will now go by the name of In Your House: Triple Threat.

You're fired!

WWF wrestler Jacques Rougeau has apparently just been fired, as a result of either very nearly or actually getting into fights with four different roster mates in the three weeks since WrestleMania III. It is thought the men he provoked are Bret Hart, Butch Reed, Paul Orndorff and Paul Roma. Rougeau's brother Raymond is said to be very unhappy with the decision, and the WWF are open to letting him go if he asks for his release, but they are equally happy to keep him and try to find a spot for him. It is likely that the company will now be looking for a new babyface tag team to fill the hole left by the Rougeau Brothers. There are grumblings from Rougeau that he may be looking to try to sue the WWF for wrongful termination.

Who could have been

“The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase has recently debuted in the WWF with a series of vignettes, along with a striking bodyguard called Sid, although a source within the company has told us that Sid was a late choice. Apparently, two other names that were being seriously considered for the role were Mark Calaway and Scott Hall. Hall was the favourite for a while, with discussions about giving him the gimmick of a vicious Cuban amateur fighter called Ramon who gets discovered and hired by DiBiase in a vignette. The head booker wasn't sure if he liked the idea, and then in the end he remembered that Sid existed, and decided he was perfect for the role. It is thought that Calaway and Hall are both still very much on the WWF's radar and will probably both be signed at some point within the next few years.

Jim Ross and Jesse “The Body” Ventura welcome everybody to tonight's episode of Superstars, and preview what's coming tonight. Later on Ventura will be taking to the ring to interview all three members of the upcoming triangle match for the Intercontinental title. Matches include Bret “The Hitman” Hart vs Dynamite Kid, Davey Boy Smith vs “Dangerous” Danny Davis, Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs Billy Jack Haynes, and Hulk Hogan defending his world title against King Kong Bundy in the main event. Speaking of Hulk Hogan, “Mean” Gene Okerlund is waiting to welcome the World Heavyweight Champion to the ring right now.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Hogan's music hits and he makes his way to the ring with all of the usual posing and flexing. The music stops and Mean Gene asks Hogan to talk about tonight's title defence. Hogan starts his response with “Well let me tell you something, Mean Gene”, because I'm four episodes in and I somehow haven't typed that yet. He holds up five fingers and says the Heenan Family are lining up and he's knocking them all down like toy soldiers. “Andre the Giant”, and he put his thumb down, “Paul Orndorff”, and he forces down his little finger, “and Hercules”, and down goes the ring finger. 3 down, 2 to go. He has a challenge for King Kong Bundy tonight brother. He wants to see if Bundy can beat him fair and square, with no interference in their match from any other member of the Heenan Family. He'll even let the big dumb ape have Heenan at ringside just in case his laces come untied and he needs someone to help him tie them back up. “But no distractions or sneak attacks brother, let's fight 1 on 1, like men.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Bobby “The Brain” Heenan and King Kong Bundy come out to the stage, Heenan with a mic in his hand. He calls Hogan a hypocrite for suggesting the Heenan Family always cheat, and he points out that Hogan himself is no stranger to using underhanded tactics, a choke here, an eye poke there. But he accepts Hogan's challenge, and promises that bell to bell there will be no shenanigans from himself or anybody else. “Fair and square” it is, and he says King Kong Bundy is big enough, strong enough and good enough to beat Hogan with no interference in the match. “But Hogan, you never said anything about right now.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Paul Orndorff and Hercules crawl out from under the ring and slip in behind Hogan. The crowd are pleading with Hogan to turn around, and when he finally does he eats a huge double clothesline. Jim Ross incredulously suggests that these 2 men must have got their hands on tonight's program, found out that Hogan was scheduled for an interview to kick off the show, and then sequestered themselves underneath the ring before the fans arrived in the arena. Orndorff brings in a chair and they place Hogan's leg in between the seat and the back, and Orndorff climbs up to the second rope. </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Heenan is laughing on the stage, but he quickly loses his humour when Harley Race tears past him and runs to the ring, shoving Orndorff and causing him to fall out of the ring. Hogan gets up and he and Race chase Orndorff and Hercules off and they join Bundy and Heenan on the stage. Race leaves the ring and walks back up the ramp towards the rest of the Heenan Family, shouting that they're all cowards as Hogan stays in the ring looking conflicted. Orndorff and Hercules look like they want to attack Race, Heenan looks disgusted with Race but still doesn't let them, and the Heenan Family all leave the stage together.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Both of these competitors try to hit their signature moves multiple times across the match but they can never quite do so without them being narrowly avoided or reversed. After a good period of dominance from Bret Hart, he tries to lock on the sharpshooter again but Dynamite Kid still manages to prevent it. Bret shoots a little glance at Jimmy Hart, who climbs up onto the ring apron, megaphone in hand, and the referee goes over to tell him off. This allows the Hitman to hit a sickening low blow, which finally allows him to lock on the sharpshooter with ease to get the win.</span></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Back to the announcers after the match and they're talking about the developments with the Heenan Family earlier. JR suggests that we could be watching the Heenan Family falling apart at the seams, but Ventura tells JR to have a little faith in Heenan. He's a master at managing big egos, and he'll get Harley Race in check in no time. JR says that maybe Harley Race is the only member of the Heenan Family that doesn't need to be got in check. They then pitch to a video of Heenan and Race that was shot last week just after Race beat JYD and left the robe in the ring, and JR says this video is even more interesting after the events earlier.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Bobby Heenan is standing in a locker room, when Harley Race enters. The smug look on Heenan's face slowly gives way to dismay as he realises Race doesn't have the robe with him. He asks Race where it is, and Race tells him that JYD has probably woken up by now and taken it with him. Heenan berates Race, asking him what on earth he was thinking, but Race doesn't look phased. Race says he doesn't need a stinking robe, or a crown or a sceptre or anything other than a pair of trunks and his wrestling boots. He's one of the most legitimately tough SOBs this sport has ever seen, and he's done prancing around putting on a show and pretending to be a king. He still wants Heenan in his corner, but if he wants a king in the family so badly then he'll have to get one of his other stooges to win the thing back for him.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Gorilla Monsoon is sitting in his office doing some paperwork, when there is a knock at the door. He puts down his pen and tells them to come in, and in walks the Fabulous Moolah. She tells Monsoon that she doesn't want to defend her title at In Your House. Gorilla Monsoon says tough, she's a champion and therefore she has a responsibility to defend her title whenever the WWF chooses. She says she deserves to be shown more respect after the things she's done for women's wrestling but Monsoon isn't having any of it. He's the president and what he says goes, either she defends the title against Velvet McIntyre at the pay-per-view or she will be stripped of her title. Moolah gives him a scathing look before leaving.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Once again Haku refuses to release his grip after the match is over, but this time Roma is into the ring within 2 seconds. He stomps on Haku's head, which gets his attention. He bears down on Roma, but Powers has recovered and he jumps on Haku's back with his arms around his neck. Haku backs into the turnbuckles and squishes Jim Powers, and Paul Roma flies at him with a big forearm. We're in a gym that has a ring set up, and Ted DiBiase is sparring with his bodyguard Sid. They get into a collar and elbow tie up when Sid spots a woman entering out of the corner of his eye. He turns his head to look at her and his eyes practically turn into hearts and pop out of his head like a cartoon character. DiBiase follows Sid's gaze and he looks interested too, but in a much more unsavoury way than Sid. He turns his attention back to Sid and tells him in a hushed voice to take a fall for him so he can impress the lady. The look on Sid's face plainly says that he doesn't want to do it, but DiBiase repeats the instruction with a tone of authority. Sid looks annoyed, but rubs his thumb over his middle and index fingers, and DiBiase agrees to pay him for it. Sid nods and DiBiase aims a mock punch at the giant, who hits the deck. This seems to have got the woman's attention, as she is looking over from across the room. DiBiase turns to the camera and whispers that everybody's got their price for the Million Dollar Man, he just hopes that she does as well. He then leans on the ropes facing her and beckons her over.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Dynamite Kid is out with Davey Boy and Billy Graham, presumably to prevent any shenanigans like the ones that happened earlier in the Dynamite Kid – Bret Hart match, however within less than a minute of the match starting Bret and Jim Neidhart are out to sway the numbers back in the Hart Foundation's favour. After about 3 minutes of total dominance from Davey Boy, he gets Davis up for the running powerslam. As if it were planned before the match, Billy Graham starts brawling with Jim Neidhart and Dynamite Kid throws himself at Bret Hart. Davey Boy hits the powerslam and Jimmy Hart realises he's the only one that can do anything, so he climbs up onto the apron again. Jesse “The Body” Ventura welcomes Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine and “Macho Man” Randy Savage to the ring to talk about their feelings on the historic triangle match that will be taking place in just over two weeks time. Randy Savage is furious that someone else is getting in on his title shot. He'll still win his title back by beating up two men instead of one, but he still feels like the Macho Man has been disrespected. Greg Valentine is laughing throughout Savage's rant, and Ventura lets him have the floor next. Valentine says his plan came together perfectly, granted he didn't expect to have to face two other men at the same time, but he got the title shot that he's so richly deserved and he's... Ricky Steamboat cuts in and repeats “richly deserved?” with a sneer. He says that Valentine stopped Steamboat from saving his friend from an attack, then attacked Steamboat himself the next week, then attacked him AGAIN the week after, and Valentine thinks that means he deserves a title shot? At Triple Threat he's going to show Valentine just how little he deserves that shot and just how out of his depth he is. Valentine starts to argue and Savage starts to pipe up again too, but Steamboat cuts them off. He says he can't wait until Triple Threat to get his hands on them, so he's challenging them to a tag match next week, to face him and a man that wants to get a little revenge of his own, George “The Animal” Steele.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

He says he still wants to be represented by Heenan as he genuinely believes he's one of the best managers the sport has ever seen, he's just done with all the theatrics and the cowardly sneak attacks. JR notices that Race is starting to grow some facial hair, and he compliments him on the new, or should he say old look. In the ring, the action is pretty much what you would expect from a match between Hulk Hogan and a big monster. Bundy is seemingly in control and Hogan looks like he doesn't have a hope in the world, when all of a sudden he finds the strength from somewhere against all odds. Bundy aims a punch at Hogan but it doesn't register and he starts to hulk up. Bobby Heenan tries to be sneaky as he takes something from his pocket, but Harley Race is up from his seat before you can say “shenanigans”, and he slaps Heenans hand causing coins to spill everywhere onto the floor. WWF Superstars of Wrestling

Thursday week 1 May 1987

ZYyIybq.jpg

TjfD5qe.jpglvykkVO.jpg

Jim Ross and Jesse Ventura preview the night of wrestling we have ahead of us. Harley Race will be taking on “Cowboy” Bob Orton, Haku will face Dino Bravo, and our main event will see Ricky Steamboat and George Steele taking on the team of Greg Valentine and Randy Savage, after Steamboat issued the challenge last week. But first, the British Bulldogs are set to take on the Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff.

The Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff
(w/ Slick) vs
The British Bulldogs
(w/ “Superstar” Billy Graham)

This could be called a warm up match for the British Bulldogs ahead of their tag title match next Sunday, but there are certainly much easier opponents for a warm up match than The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff. Sheik seems to be even more agitated and unpredictable than usual, so it seems that Butch Reed has really got under his skin. After a back and forth contest that perhaps surprisingly doesn't have any interference from the Hart Foundation, Butch Reed or Jim Duggan, the Bulldogs get the win with a gorilla press and diving headbutt combo.

Winners in 10:32,
The British Bulldogs

After the competitors from the last match have left, “The Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart comes to the ring. He says that he's been in contact with Adrian Adonis, and asks Brutus Beefcake to come out to the ring because he's got a message to give him. Brutus Beefcake does come out and he wants to know what this message is, is Adrian Adonis accepting his challenge for a match at Triple Threat?

iGXzxQM.jpg

An angry looking bald man jumps the guard rail and rolls into the ring behind Beefcake. Jimmy Hart tells Beefcake that if he wants an answer to that question, maybe he should ask Adrian Adonis himself. Beefcake just looks confused, and before he can even turn around Adonis gets him in a sleeper hold until he passes out. Adonis aims a deranged look down the camera and shouts that he'll see Beefcake at Triple Threat, and then he climbs back over the guard rail and leaves.

“Mean” Gene Okerlund is joined backstage by the Fabulous Moolah. She repeats what she said to Gorilla Monsoon last week, that she doesn't want to defend her title and that making her defend it against her will is disrespectful after how she's carried women's wrestling on her back for god knows how long. Velvet McIntyre comes in and says Moolah is just scared that she'll lose the title if she faces her, which is what is going to happen and Moolah is going to find that out come Triple Threat.

Tito Santana
vs
Sika
(w/ Afa & King Curtis Iaukea)

It's speed vs viciousness as Tito Santana takes on one half of the Wild Samoans. One thing Santana has to his advantage is that his opponent is much more used to competing in tag team matches, and Santana uses that to his advantage as he outwits the Samoan. Santana gets the win after hitting a flying forearm.

Back from the break, we're with JR and Jesse again. It's time for another update from the Million Dollar Man, and Ventura is very excited to see if there have been any developments with DiBiase and the beautiful woman from the gym that we saw last week.

A6juUPK.jpg5YgO8yD.jpghOwWLxc.jpg

Ted DiBiase is in the back of an expensive car with his bodyguard Sid, along with the woman that he met last week. He says that people still don't believe that money can buy him anything he wants, they still don't believe that they can be bought. He says as time goes on, he'll prove that they can, and he will also prove very soon that he is the most gifted athlete ever to step foot in the World Wrestling Federation. But for now, he's also the hungriest. He calls for his driver to put his foot down.

We're at a high end restaurant, and the place is packed. Our trio walk straight past the long line of customers waited to be seated, and DiBiase tells the maître d' that he wants a table. The maître d' says that it's impossible as it would upset his other customers, but he is welcome to wait in line and there should be a table available within the next 30-35 minutes. DiBiase says he's the Million Dollar Man and he doesn't wait for anybody. The maître d' continues to protest, but as DiBiase starts to put down 100 dollar bills in front of him, his protestations become weaker and weaker. In the end, he says that he has just remembered there is a table that was reserved but the party has not yet arrived, and he will make other arrangements for them when they get here, and he asks DiBiase and his companions to follow him. At this, a man who looks suspiciously like an independent wrestler steps out of the line and gets in DiBiase's face, asking what's wrong with him and can't he wait in line like everybody else? Like we've seen over the last few weeks, DiBiase calls on Sid to diffuse the situation, but this time the foolhardy man doesn't back down. Sid looks at DiBiase, who gives him a little nod. Sid gets the man up onto his shoulders, and powerbombs him through a nearby table where a nice elderly couple are eating. A security guard rushes over, but DiBiase slips him a couple of notes and says that everything is in order.

DiBiase and his date are sat at their table, and DiBiase gives her a beautiful diamond ring that will look familiar to anyone who has been watching Superstars for the last few weeks. He turns to the camera and tells us not to be mad with the maître d' or the security guard, or with the man who tried to be a hero. Some people's price is money, for others it's fear. For that guy, it was obviously pain. He then tells the camera man to go away so he can enjoy a nice romantic evening with Ivory in peace.

JR is once again disgusted with DiBiase. He says as if he hasn't been insufferable enough these last few weeks, he's now getting that hulking brute Sid to attack innocent civilians, and he's getting away with it because he puts money in people's pockets? Ventura says “I know! Isn't it great?” All of a sudden cheers and applause start to fill the arena.

suCGcpA.jpg

Jim Duggan is making his way to the ring, 2x4 in hand. He conducts a USA chant for a while but then grabs a mic and calls for the crowd to calm down. He has been watching the developments between Butch Reed, The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff these last few weeks, and there's something fishy going on. He has history with Butch Reed that dates back to other organisations, it makes no sense that Reed would have such a change of heart and want to protect him all of a sudden. Duggan wouldn't be surprised if this is all an act, and he wouldn't put it past people like Reed, Sheik, Volkoff and Slick to be putting all of this on just to lure him into a trap. To put it simply he doesn't trust Butch Reed, and if Reed is going to turn on him after all of this then there's no point putting it off, he wants Reed 1 on 1 right now.

9coLbtP.jpg

Butch Reed comes out to the stage with a mic of his own. He admits that he's not “protecting” Duggan out of any real love for him, but he does have a problem with people ganging up on and targeting somebody who doesn't deserve it, especially if they're people he shares a manager with because that then reflects on him. He will prove to Duggan that he's not in cahoots with Sheik and Volkoff and that they're in this together now whether Duggan likes it or not, and if facing him right now will help to prove that then let's do it.

“Hacksaw” Jim Duggan
vs
“The Natural” Butch Reed
(w/ Slick)

Slick comes out to ringside as the match is about to start, to be in Butch Reed's corner. Reed goes for a friendly test of strength to start but Duggan is having none of it. That's the story of much of this match, as Duggan refuses to turn his back on either Reed or Slick, obviously expecting some kind of underhanded tactics. Reed seems to be playing it fair and square, but he's not holding back on the physicality. Eventually, after some heavy strikes, Reed gets Duggan up for a gorilla press slam. He slams him to the mat, only to be attacked from behind by The Iron Sheik.

Sheik and Reed brawl, as Nikolai Volkoff makes his way into the ring. Jim Duggan gets back to his feet slowly but is met with a big punch from Volkoff, and they brawl too. After a while, Duggan and Reed both manage to fight off their respective opponents, and Slick manages to convince them not to get back into the ring to start the fight again. Butch touches Duggan on the shoulder and Duggan wheels around, knocking Reed's hand away. Duggan points an accusatory finger at Reed's face, and it's clear he still doesn't trust him. Reed holds his arms wide to show that he doesn't mean any harm, and he rolls out to leave Duggan in the ring on his own.

Mean Gene is with the WWF World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan. Hogan talks about how he's taken everything and everyone the Heenan Family has thrown at him, and now he just has one more test until he can put the Heenan Family behind him for good. Gene directs to conversation towards Harley Race and his recent actions, and Hogan is full of praise. He says it's nice to see that someone in that family has an ounce of integrity.

In comes Harley Race, sporting a very familiar old look. He promises Hogan that their match will be one on one with no funny business whatsoever, but he also assures Hogan that that doesn't mean he'll have it easy. Next week Race is going to prove why he's considered by so many to be one of the best wrestlers of all time, and when all is said and done he will walk out of that arena the WWF World Heavyweight Champion.

We go to a pre-taped video featuring Bobby Heenan, and three of his clients who are standing in a line. Heenan in pacing up and down in front of them, giving a motivational speech about how the Family needs a representative to take down the Junkyard Dog and bring that royal robe back where it belongs. He says that it can't just be any of them, it needs to be someone with a regal bearing, someone who can rightfully proclaim himself a king and make people believe it. He comes to a stop in front of Hercules, and studies him for a moment, before deciding that he's not the right choice. He moves down the line to King Kong Bundy, and tries but fails to stifle a laugh at the thought of Bundy as a king. He then moves onto his last remaining client, Paul Orndorff. He stands back and makes a frame with his fingers, and looks at Orndorff through it. “Wonderful” says Heenan.

Savage and Valentine start this match on top, working together to keep Ricky Steamboat penned in and away from the tag of George Steele. Steele keeps trying to rally the crowd to Steamboat's cause by banging on the turnbuckle but it's not enough to help him overcome his opponents. Steamboat finally manages to rally, and he dodges Valentine and makes a dive for his partner, but Valentine's manager Johnny V pulls Steele off the apron before Steamboat can reach him. Miss Elizabeth isn't happy with her team using those tactics, and she starts to argue with Johnny V, which leads to him shoving her. Randy Savage is incensed, and he immediately runs over to grab Johnny V's collar and threaten him, until Greg Valentine hits Savage from behind. From this point on, all semblance of teamwork between Savage and Valentine is gone, and the match becomes a lot more even. After some back and forth action, the Macho Man gets the better of Steamboat and hits him with the elbow drop, and gets the pinfall victory over the Intercontinental Champion while Johnny V holds George Steele's leg.

Once again Miss Elizabeth argues with Johnny V, and he looks like he's about to put his hands on her again but decides against it when he sees Savage coming towards him. Savage walks straight past Elizabeth and Johnny V to where the Intercontinental title belt is being held, and he takes the belt and gets back in the ring. Savage stands over the downed Ricky Steamboat and holds up the belt. Greg Valentine then comes into the shot and he and Savage have a staredown as Steamboat lies on the mat between them.
