MPW Twin City Showdown III

Sunday, Week 3, December, 2022

Live from Hook & Ladder Theatre [Minneapolis, Hennipin County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 640

THE BIG SHOT 10-MAN BATTLE ROYAL: The now annual battle royal which kicks off the big show was a shorter affair than last year, with only ten competitors involved. Normally meant as a Launchpad for young stars for the year ahead, this particular outing didn’t disappoint. While familiar faces Curt Meritt, Masked Mauler and William Jetterson were among the final four, it was the young rookie sensation Cameron Copeland who got the win having dumped Jetterson after he himself had eliminated the other two. As retaliation for his defeat, Jetterson unleashed Sir Hiss on Copeland to ruin his big moment.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Cameron Copeland won a battle royal in 10:12. The other members of the 'final four' were William Jetterson, The Masked Mauler and Curt Meritt, with William Jetterson being the final elimination. The Masked Mauler got the most eliminations over the course of the match.

Rating: 41

A highly-rated battle royal to warm up the crowd and it worked beautifully. Copeland deserved the nod as we look to see what we’ve really got with him.

SINGLES MATCH: Roger Monteiro vs. Rafe Sashay

Last year’s winner of the The Big Shot Battle Royal; Rafe Sashay has struggled to keep his form from the beginning of the year. Rumours of backstage issues came to a head when his best friend DJ Dunne became the first person released by Chief Two Eagles due to his behaviour. While the Living Legend has struggled, he always brings his a-game at big shows like this and former mainstay of MPW Roger Monteiro had nothing in his arsenal to keep up.

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Rafe Sashay defeated Roger Monteiro in 10:24 by pinfall with a Forward Russian Legsweep.

Rating: 37

The crowd continue to heat up as we wanted to reward Sashay for his win the year before. However, his constant backstage gossip and politicking had been noticed. And he was on thin ice with the Chief. Hopefully he pulled through.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Minnesota Awesome vs. Main Street Hustlers

Ever since MPW started, the team of Minnesota Awesome have lost. They’ve made art out of their ability to lose. Every team to wear the tag team titles has beaten them at one point or another. So the Main Street Hustlers entered the match with some confidence. And for some time it looked well founded. The hustlers dominated from the opening bell, creating an extended heat segment and hitting all their big double-team moves. Only then something strange happened. The Awesome started to make a comeback. High-flying move after high-flying move connected and the Hustlers looked in trouble. Then the unthinkable. With Spike on the mat and Gillis outside, the Minnesota Awesome took flight with double flying elbows, and…

In a decent match, Minnesota Awesome defeated Main Street Hustlers in 8:21 when Clark Smallbone pinned Spike with a Double Flying Elbows.

Rating: 37

What can I say, I was feeling bold and nostalgic.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Pepper Pelton vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde ©

Earlier in the card than expected, the former Cross River Connection do battle for the MPW Midwest Heavyweight Title. From the opening bell, the action is fast-paced, vicious and wild. The Perfect One Pepper Pelton gives no quarter and expects none from his former partner as his mind is full of revenge. Every attack connects and Prime Time continually frustrates by kicking out time and time again. Then after ten minutes of crazy action, Pepper lines him up for his own finishing move; the Super Kick dubbed the Prime Time Perfection. As he kicks out, Prime Time ducks the move and rolls beneath Peppers leg and hooks his trunks pulling him down into the pin. With the referee unable to see, Prime Time illegally pulls Pepper’s trunks with both hands to keep him down for the win. The announce team are in appalled shock at such obvious cheating.

In an exceptional match, Prime Time Jack Pryde defeated Pepper Pelton in 10:02 by pinfall by using underhanded tactics. Prime Time Jack Pryde makes defence number seven of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 59

Storyline screamed babyface overcomes the odds to get revenge, but we did love the odd upset on the big show. You don’t want it being too predictable after all. Best match they’ve had. But probably time to move them both on to new things.

SINGLES MATCH: Charlie Corner vs. Phil Anders

If there’s one real surprise this year, it’s the sudden emergence of the Nebraska Stud Phil Anders. His no-nonsense, technical repertoire has been a refreshing change of pace from the wild brawls which normally inhabit MPW. The other surprise has been the growth of the stable known roughly as The Young Stallions. Charlie spent a couple of years struggling alone, but he has found new heights with a group of friends around him. These two therefore meet in a surprisingly high-profile match-up. The wrestling is decent, with Anders doing everything he can to keep Corner off his feet and in a technical showcase. The crowd eat the whole thing up, especially Corner’s comeback, with the New Satin Knights cheering him on outside and Corey St.Hubbins doing the same from the announcers table. But Anders does not simply give up in the face of adversity and a mistimed frog splash allows the Stud to twist up his opponent in the Nebraska Stretch. Corner makes the ropes, Anders lets go and as they get to their feet, Charlie hits the Corner Cutter OUTTA NOWHERE, hooks both legs for the win.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, Charlie Corner defeated Phil Anders in 20:16 by pinfall with a Corner Cutter.

Rating: 47

Anders has won plenty this year and Charlie deserved to cap his own career year with a win.

SINGLES MATCH: Danny Cassidy vs. Zippy Deverell

Two of the up-and-coming superstars in MPW blow-off their long-term feud a the big show. Zippy Deverell, from Corbin, Kentucky, hates fakes. He hates Texans and more than anything, he hates fake Texans. Danny, being the son of Jack Griffiths and someone who comes from a comfortable background is not the ‘man of the people’ that he portrays himself as according to Deverell. Initially this was a short-term feud to push Cassidy up the card, but quickly turned into one of the hottest stories in the company once Zippy was unleashed on the mic. Both men get stuck into one another in a wild brawl. As the match draws to a close, with both men exhausted, beaten and battered, Zippy hits his spinning Bulldog on Cassidy, who kicks out. Dragging his broken body to his feet, Zip can’t help but acknowledge his opponents toughness with a cocked eyebrow just before getting smashed by a Southern Justice Lariat which threatens to take his head off.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, Danny Cassidy defeated Zippy Deverell in 9:39 by pinfall with a Southern Justice.

Rating: 45

In cases of split decisions like this, we mostly go with face over heel. Mostly.

TAG TEAM MATCH: New Satin Knights vs. Lakota Braves

The fastest-rising tag team of the year, the New Satin Knights face off against the slowly sinking without a trace Lakota Braves. Arguably the most obvious, one-sided match of the night, sees the incredible duo of Drake Constantine & Edouard LeMieux take it to the MPW originals with an incredible combination of mat-based technique and high-flying skill. They barely missed a beat with the loss of The Minnesota Kid Corey St.Hubbins, and have progressed faster than almost any other team in the company’s history. Following the same trajectory as the Masked Assassins, they could definitely see gold in their future. They make short work of the Native Americans and add a definitive full stop to their year of amazing progression.

In a bout that had fantastic heat and good wrestling, New Satin Knights defeated Lakota Braves in 9:47 when Edouard LeMieux submitted Billy Chase with a Stone Ankle Stretch.

Rating: 52

Another good match from a midcard time on the rise. There’s a chance that both Edouard and Drake are too good for the tag titles already, but by jingo they’re going for them anyway.

SINGLES MATCH: James Diaz vs. Masked Stranger

The Masked Stranger has lead the Brotherhood of the Hood on a tyrannical domination of Minnesota Pro Wrestling. As the mouthpiece for both current MPW Title-holder; the Man Monster Dreadnought AND the MPW Tag Team Champions; the Masked Assassins, he has been heavily involved in almost every element of MPW for over a year. The surprise victory of his bodyguard/enforcer to top champion appeared to momentarily derail his plans. But he enters the match with James Diaz riding high once again. For his part Diaz has been a constant thorn in the side of the stable. Elevating his game ten-fold since the departure of his cousin, James clashes with Stranger at the height of his powers as a singles performer. The two are cautious to start with, but soon settle into a groove. Masked Stranger, the puppet master controls the action for the majority, while James restricts himself to bouts of power and speed. IN the end, it is over-confidence which causes the problems. Stranger, with a false sense of security does not account for the incredible toughness and stamina of Diaz. Who, channeling his father The Monster Raymond Diaz, fights out of the Cobra Clutch to deliver an almighty Asian Thumb Spike.

In an exceptional match, James Diaz defeated Masked Stranger in 26:40 by pinfall with an Asian Thumb Spike.

Rating: 68

Amazing match to top off their on-again-off-again feud. Both men are generals in the ring and given the time, they delivered a classic.

COTT & MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MASK MATCH: The LA Stars © vs. Masked Assassins ©

Having already seen their manager, mouthpiece and leader carted backstage after a vicious war with James Diaz, the Masked Assassins go into the big showdown with no one behind them but each other. It does not seem to matter at first, with them throwing the smaller and lighter LA Stars around the ring like a couple of ragdolls. The Stars pick and choose their moments and hit with lightning speed and high-risk moves, slowly wearing down their opponents. Neither team can afford to lose, as their entire identities are on the line. After twenty minutes, LA Star #2 sets up Masked Assassin #2 for the Star Destroyer, only to be rolled up and twisted into a Boston Crab. Star holds on for as long as he can but taps, only to have his teammate catch his hand before it hits the mat. LA Star #1, buoyed by sudden adrenaline, goes on a rampage, hurling Assassin #2 out the ring. With Assassin #1 in the ring, the Stars load up the Star Destroyer and pin for the 1-2-3, the titles and… the masks. With no Stranger or Dreadnought around, the LA Stars; to the delight of crowd, sit the Assassins in the ring, barely conscious and peel back their masks. On commentary Corey St.Hubbins declares: “Hey, I know them. That’s Ray Cavalero and Egon Merowitz. I can’t believe they were the Assassins all along.”

6mO0B7y.jpg4Xkyyzu.jpg

In an exceptional match, The LA Stars defeated Masked Assassins in 21:17 when LA Star #1 pinned Masked Assassin #1 with a Star Destroyer. The LA Stars win the MPW Tag Team.

Rating: 62

And there we go. The Masked Assassins, having been so dominant, lose their titles and their masks? Ray Cavalero and Egon Merowitz are two very solid workers with middling backstage attitudes who we propelled to the top of the tag division. They did well, but with everything on the line there was on way The LA Stars were losing. They now join Ring Generals as three-time tag team champions. Rough night for the Brotherhood as Stranger lost and there’s no way the Assassins remain part of them without masks.

MPW CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE MATCH: Scout vs. Dreadnought ©

And it all comes down to this. Jeremy Finch, Doc Hammond, or as we know him, Scout. He’s torn through MPW since his debut, walking, talking and winning like the megastar he is. He walks to the ring to the sounds of Fortunate Son, wearing his leather jacket and aviators. His opponent, the undefeated Man Monster himself; Dreadnought. He comes to ring, like all the Brotherhood to Into the Cave by Acid. He size difference is pronounced and as expected, and as always, Dreadnought dominates. Scout uses his agility and experience to avoid any serious damage but cannot get a foothold in the match. As one-sided a match as we’ve had all night, the Man Monster throws Scout around like he’s nothing. Unusually Dreadnought even stops the destruction to yell at the crowd too. And that, is his mistake. After an extended period of shouting, Dread picks up the challenger for a Dread Bomb, only for Scout to slip out and roll through into a sunset flip, but instead of pinning his opponent, he wraps up the Man Monster’s massive legs into a Texas Cloverleaf. Screaming in rage and agony; Dreadnought will not submit and slowly, and surely, he fades away until he is unconscious. Referee David Poker checks his arm three times and then calls the match, for the NEW MPW CHAMPION!

In an exceptional match, Scout defeated Dreadnought in 20:34 by submission finish with a Texas Cloverleaf. Scout wins the MPW Championship.

Rating: 67

Great match.

ANGLE: Scout is celebrating to a delirious crowd as Dreadnought, like Stranger, is carried from the ring. Scout climbs the turnbuckle as Fortunate Son blares out again. He’s done it, he’s climbed to the very top and… the music is interrupted by cuts of static. The lights in the arena flicker, then silence. It is broken by the haunting opening to White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. Scout looks around in confusion.

Rating: 79

OVERALL RATING: 67

Backstage, after having learnt that we snagged 46,405 viewers, Chief hangs up the phone and smiles.

“Who was that?” I asked.

“Samuel Keith. We wanted to congratulate us for a great show and to remind us that we’re a valued member of the COTT.”

“Why the change of heart?” I asked.

“Well, I’m not sure. But I can tell you this, we’re not a tiny, non-name company anymore.”

“Yeah, we’re a small no-name company,” laughed Corey.

As was tradition we, Chief and Curt went up to the roof, in the snow to enjoy the view and a beer. The view this time wasn’t of Bemidji, but Minneapolis. One half of the Twin City. The view was spectacularly breath-taking.

“You reckon anyone understood the ending?” Chief asked.

“It’s wrestling,” said Curt simply. “Anything unusual is another fight waiting to happen. We’ve got some smart fans. We should remember to never treat them as stupid.”

“To the fans!” I declared, and they chinked their glasses.

“Where do you think we’ll be in a year’s time?” Curt asked.

“Hopefully here again, or in St. Paul. Somewhere like home,” replied the Chief.

“You reckon we’ll lose any more of the boys to TCW?”

“The road ahead is treacherous Little Wolf,” said Chief. “I believe we’ll lose people to TCW, to their own stupidity and to our own anger. No man is perfect, but he should always try his best.”

“What if it’s not good enough?” I asked.

“It will be. All things for the best, in the best of all possible worlds.”

Welcome to Minnesota Pro Wrestling… Home from the holidays…

For the first time since I’d started, I allowed myself to return to the UK for Christmas and New Year’s. I think it’s fair to say that not a day went by without Chief or Curt contacting me. They were obviously fired up about the coming year and had been hard at work recording new vignettes. We’d extended MPW Power Hour for another year, but extended it to two hours. Which made it a premier TV show on WrestleWorld. Our old Vignettes were looking old and we had more stars, more footage and better production to produce them now.

Welcome to Minnesota Pro Wrestling… Two Hour Power Hour…

With contracts upgraded for a number of workers, a new two-hour Power Hour show signed with WrestleWorld and our main feud set to begin, we were ready for 2023. Flicking through the Wrestling Water magazine preview magazine for the year ahead and I noticed in the ‘One’s To Watch’ segment that Prime Time was one of the wrestlers highlighted. I felt a swelling of pride that our small promotion was starting to garner some positive press. I promised to myself that I wouldn’t botch Prime Time’s MPW career like I had Bradley Blaze’s.

MPW POWER HOUR #37

Wednesday, Week 1, January, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 221

SINGLES MATCH: Pepper Pelton vs. Zippy Deverell

In a decent match, Zippy Deverell defeated Pepper Pelton in 8:20 by pinfall, illegally using the ropes for leverage.

Rating: 47

We kick off the New Year with a good match between two of our younger stars. Pepper’s momentum has nose-dived after his loss to Prime Time at Twin City Showdown, so it seemed a good opportunity to elevate Zippy and drag them all together in a massive midcard feud.

ANGLE: Zippy Deverell grabs the mic. He knows he’s ready for championship success and will be happy to whip Prime Time for the Midwest Heavyweight Title. But he hasn’t forgotten about Danny Cassidy either. That Silver Spoon Pseudo Cowboy doesn’t just get to get lucky and then swan off to new things.

Rating: 60

Zippy’s ability on the mic continues to be an underappreciated asset of MPW and one that we’d look to highlight more in the year ahead.

SINGLES MATCH: Danny Cassidy vs. Phil Anders

In a decent match, Danny Cassidy defeated Phil Anders in 8:30 by pinfall by using underhanded tactics.

Rating: 43

Good win for Danny here, as Anders always gives a good test to anyone he faces. The fact Danny had to cheat, shows just how competitive the Midwest Title scene is becoming.

ANGLE: The LA Stars are in the Power Zone, draped in MPW Tag Title Gold. They tell Corey that they’re delighted to have unmaked the Assassins and fought for a win for honour, respect and competition. As far as they’re concerned with the Assassins now maskless, they’re out of the Brotherhood of the Hood. And without Masked Stranger or Dreadnought watching their back, they’d be surprised to see them again. As for the future, the LA Stars are it. And they’re happy to give other teams a shot. Starting with the New Satin Knights.

Rating: 53

Decent promo from the champs as they nicely segue from Assassins to New Satin Knights.

MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: New Satin Knights vs. The LA Stars ©

In a good match, The LA Stars defeated New Satin Knights in 22:22 when LA Star #1 pinned Drake Constantine with a Double Stomp following interference from Egon Merowitz and Ray Cavalero. The LA Stars make defence number one of the MPW Tag Team.

Rating: 58

It seems The Ring Assassins (new name) didn’t get the memo about the LA Stars moving on to new things. And they clearly have no interest in beating a different team for the titles. They want revenge. Plain and simple.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is in the Power Zone and he immediately criticises Corey St.Hubbins for being a crock. He then moves on to Pepper Pelton, who shouldn’t be called The Perfect One, but rather The Perfectly Average One. And finally, his opponent tonight… California Cool Charlie Corner. He thinks its sweet that MPW have an outreach program for mentally slow people and he’ll do his bit for charity, by beating Corner quickly. After all, everyone deserves their 15-minutes of fame.

Rating: 66

Every time I consider the possibility of turning Prime Time face, he cuts a promo and I think better of it. He’s the ultimate antagonist heel and when he eventually gets to the main event (and he will) he is going to draw a LOT of money with a babyface chasing him.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Charlie Corner vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde ©

In a good match, Prime Time Jack Pryde defeated Charlie Corner in 10:27 by pinfall, illegally using the ropes for leverage. Prime Time Jack Pryde makes defence number eight of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 57

A win is a win is a win. Prime Time will happily lie, cheat and steal as long as he keeps the title. Just the way it should be. His title reign is already impressive enough and he’s helped raise the profile of the title simply by having it. Legend in the making.

ANGLE: Stranger and Dreadnought are in the ring. Tonight they have a match against Scout and Diaz. The Brotherhood may have stumbled at Twin City Showdown, but it’ll take more than the loss of their tag team champions to derail them.

Rating: 61

More solid mic work from Stranger, and even Dreadnought got in on the action, showing off the skills he’d learnt from Chief Two Eagles.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Scout & James Diaz vs. Masked Stranger & Dreadnought

In a superb match, Scout and James Diaz defeated Dreadnought and Masked Stranger in 22:28 when James Diaz pinned Masked Stranger by using an Asian Thumb Spike.

Rating: 67

Good guys win, James gets the pin. Dreadnought is protected from taking a pinfall loss. He’s no longer undefeated, but having never been pinned means there’s still juice in that long-running story.

ANGLE: Scout is in the ring celebrating with the fans, when the lights flicker and White Rabbit plays again. This time it goes on for longer and on the Jumbotron words flash up… “I know who you are.” Scout looks concerned.

Rating: 68

OVERALL RATING: 66

Our opening show of the year does 48,829 viewers and a good response from those viewers. In the after-taping meetup the locker room are in fine form with the exception of Ray Cavalero and Egon Merowitz. The newly christened Ring Assassins are chatting in a dark corner with Rafe Sashay. I ask Curt what’s going on there and he says that since DJ Dunne left, Rafe has been looking for some friends to watch his back. Apparently he’s found his guys. I ask what he needs his back watching for and Curt shrugs. This felt like trouble to me and I did not want or need trouble.

MPW POWER HOUR #38

Wednesday, Week 2, January, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 226

ANGLE: Scout is out in front of the live crowd in his leather jacket and aviators. He wants to address whoever is playing the music after his matches. He thinks it’s funny. Well done to whichever one of the boys is having a laugh at his expense. It’s fine to play games, he knows psychology is a big part of combat. But rather than hiding behind jumbotron games, why doesn’t the perpetrator be a man, sack up and come out and face him?

Nothing happens.

Rating: 70

The mystery continues. Good promo from our Champ here though.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Minnesota Awesome vs. Main Street Hustlers

In a terrible match, Minnesota Awesome defeated Main Street Hustlers in 8:07 when Clark Smallbone pinned Samson Gillis with a Double Flying Elbows.

Rating: 37

My God, the Minnesota Awesome boys are on a streak. Sadly their momentum is ice cold, so it’ll take more than a few wins to get them back on track. It might even already be too late to reclaim them as a team. But we’d try.

SINGLES MATCH: Danny Cassidy vs. Dreadnought

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Danny Cassidy defeated Dreadnought in 10:18 by disqualification.

Rating: 56

Danny Cassidy presenting his credentials as a future main event talent right here. A win is a win, especially against the Man Monster. Dreadnought of course remained dominant throughout, but still, he didn’t pin the young Texan.

ANGLE: New Satin Knights are with Corey in the Power Zone and it’s all hugs and backslaps. They’re happy to have caught the attention of the champs, but they feel like they have one more step to complete before going for the gold. The Ring Assassins. Everyone knows they’re assholes. But they’ve been dominant for the best part of a year and if the New Satin Knights want to be taken seriously, they’ll have to beat them. Luckily, they’ll do that too.

Rating: 53

Good stuff and a nice reminder of Corey St.Hubbins former role in The Yonug Stallions crew. I miss Corey.

TAG TEAM MATCH: New Satin Knights vs. The Ring Assassins

In a decent match, New Satin Knights defeated The Ring Assassins in 20:48 when Edouard LeMieux submitted Egon Merowitz with a Stone Ankle Stretch.

Rating: 43

Clean win by the new challengers over the old champs. I would teach Egon and Ray a lesson about being a backstage problem if it meant jobbing them to oblivion. You do not mess with the owner and booker without consequences.

ANGLE: Pepper Pelton is in the ring with Charlie Corner. He’s tired of going it alone, so he’s got himself some backup. He’s the newest member of the Young Stallions and they’re going to teach Prime Time a lesson he’s never going to forget. So he better grab a friend (if he has any left), because they’re not leaving until they have a chance to whip him like a Government mule.

Rating: 63

Good fire from the Wisconsin native. And The Young Stallions stable grows in strength and prominence. At some point we’d probably have to trim it back down, but for now; the more the merrier. It’s all for Prime Time anyway.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Pepper Pelton & Charlie Corner vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde & Phil Anders

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Pepper Pelton and Charlie Corner defeated Prime Time Jack Pryde and Phil Anders in 10:05 when Pepper Pelton pinned Phil Anders with a Fisherman's Suplex.

Rating: 59

Might be time to rename the Fisherman’s Suplex into something more befitting The Perfect One. Something like a Perfect Plex perhaps? I’d have to think about it. Good win for the Stallions though and Prime Time avoids taking the pin.

ANGLE: Masked Stranger is out in the ring now. He doesn’t need anyone else and he’ll be damned if he waits another moment. He wants the title shot he’s deserved for over a year, and he wants it now. Scout – get your ass out here.

Rating: 76

Every week a little bit better. He genuinely might have finally made it as a top-level main eventer and I couldn’t be more proud.

MPW CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE MATCH: Masked Stranger vs. Scout ©

In an exceptional match, Scout defeated Masked Stranger in 21:50 by submission with a Texas Cloverleaf. Scout makes defence number one of the MPW Championship.

Rating: 68

Well, well, well. Masked Stranger has great chemistry with the champ, he’s got the chat and he can go in the ring. This was a top-level match and I think it’s time to get him properly involved for the title.

ANGLE: White Rabbit plays again to interrupt Scout’s celebrations. Visibly angry, he starts yelling at the jumbotron as more words appear. “I know who you are… and I know what you did!” Scout’s anger changes to fear as the colour drains from his face.

Rating: 74

Ooooooo.

OVERALL RATING: 69

Another great show in a series of them and we get ourselves 48,768 viewers to boot. Two shows into the new year and we already have a conundrum; the plan for the main event is already in progress, but Masked Stranger ability, popularity and chemistry with the champ shouldn’t be overlooked. We’d have to think about that.

Next time on Minnesota Pro Wrestling… bigger contracts and more backstage issues…

Welcome to Minnesota Pro Wrestling… Where we know our worth, and our boys know it too…

So Sam Keith and Larry Vessey, ever the team players, switched the COTT World Titles from The LA Stars (who work for NYCW too I should note) to The Great Team (Richie Riggins & Andrew Harper) without so much as a note to say they were. Chief, forever on the front foot with these things immediately called Harper and Riggins and invited them to MPW for a rematch.

MPW POWER HOUR #39

Wednesday, Week 3, January, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 228

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Danny Cassidy vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde ©

In a good match, Prime Time Jack Pryde defeated Danny Cassidy in 10:30 by pinfall with a PrydeFall following interference from Zippy Deverell. Prime Time Jack Pryde makes defence number nine of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 59

Despite a solid DQ win against the Man Monster, Danny cannot translate it into a win for the Gold against Prime Time. It didn’t help to have prenniel thorn in his side Zippy on the case of course as their monster feud seeps into the Midwest Title scene beautifully.

ANGLE: The Young Stallions are in the Power Zone. Charlie Corner, Edouard LeMieux, Drake Constantine and Pepper Pelton join interviewer Corey St.Hubbins and it is a love-in of an interview. They run down Phil Anders, Prime Time, The Ring Assassins and anyone who has ever cheated, lied of been a scumbag. They’re the new force in MPW and they’re going to win it all. Don’t bet against, BRO!

Rating: 70

Wonderful interplay between the fast-rising stable of boys we have. There’s already too many of them, but we could address that another time.

TRIBAL WARFARE MATCH: The Young Stallions (Corner, LeMieux & Constantine) vs. Anders & The Ring Assassins

In a decent match, The Young Stallions (Charlie Corner, Drake Constantine and Edouard LeMieux) defeated Phil Anders and The Ring Assassins in 9:44 when Edouard LeMieux submitted Egon Merowitz with a Stone Ankle Stretch.

Rating: 48

Have you learnt your lesson yet Ring Assassins? You don’t whisper and sow dissent in my locker room without consequences. The Young Stallions continue their Bro-mance.

ANGLE: James Diaz is in the ring. Ever since Logan left, he’s been a one-man-wrecking crew. And tonight, he takes it to the next level. MPW have invited Frantic Ali to town to defend the prestigious COTT World Title. And he, has earned the shot. It’s a shot he won’t miss. This is the year of Diaz. Year of the Monster.

Rating: 78

Woah mama, this guy has elevated his game too. That was a dynamite promo from one of our stalwarts. The question is, can he back it up when it counts…

COTT WORLD TITLE MATCH: James Diaz vs. Frantic Ali ©

In a decent match, James Diaz defeated Frantic Ali in 20:31 by pinfall with an Asian Thumb Spike. James Diaz wins the COTT World Heavyweight title.

Rating: 53

You’re damn right he can! Big title win is exactly what James needed to continue his ascent. Plus with the burgeoning singles division developing, we needed another stop-gap title to bring to the table. This was the perfect result, except for Frantic who was mightily angry about his loss. I didn’t blame him to be honest.

COTT & MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: The Great Team © vs. The LA Stars ©

In a decent match, The LA Stars defeated The Great Team in 3:41 when LA Star #1 pinned Andrew Harper with a Star Destroyer. The LA Stars win the COTT World Tag Team titles. The LA Stars make defence number two of the MPW Tag Team.

Rating: 50

The Great Team appear in MPW, get dominated and buried and promptly leave again without the titles they’d fought so hard to get in the first place. Never let it be said we’re not petty sometimes. You have to feed the Selfish Wolf occasionally, or you’re just a sap. The LA Stars are joint champions once again and we would give prestige to these titles if it killed us.

ANGLE: Masked Stranger is of the opinion that last time was a fluke win for Scout, so he’s back again to demand a rematch. Sure we may not be owed one by the minutiae of the rules, but he’s petitioned with the MPW Powers That Be, and right now he’ll fulfil his destiny.

Rating: 72

One day we’d have to run a proper angle with these mysterious Powers That Be. But it wasn’t time for that sort of meta-stuff yet. Not until we were more established and could take more risks.

MPW CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE MATCH: Masked Stranger vs. Scout ©

In an exceptional match, Masked Stranger drew with Scout in 21:33 when the referee lost control of the match, the competitors and the arena lighting, and stopped the match. The creepy White Rabbit music intermittently came on during the match, causing Scout to freak out.

Rating: 62

Good match, but not as good as I hoped. We’d trained our crowd too well and they weren’t big on silly endings. They’re more of ‘wrestling as sport’ crowd it seems. We could work with that.

ANGLE: Most of the lights go out after the match and with White Rabbit playing, a spotlight illuminates Scout. A distorted voice over says:

“I know who you are!

I know what you did!

Soon, everyone else will know!

Run rabbit, run!”

Rating: 71

Whatever it was we were doing, the crowd were really responding to it.

OVERALL RATING: 65

50,351 viewers this week and a good result. Drake Constantine collared us in the locker room having spoken to Ray Cavalero. He said we weren’t paying him enough and wanted a pay rise from $100 to $800!?!?!?! We dutifully accepted and made another note. Ray Cavalero…

MPW POWER HOUR #40

Wednesday, Week 4, January, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 224

TAG TEAM MATCH: Danny Cassidy & Pepper Pelton vs. Phil Anders & Zippy Deverell

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Phil Anders and Zippy Deverell defeated Danny Cassidy and Pepper Pelton in 9:54 when Phil Anders submitted Danny Cassidy with a Nebraska Stretcher.

Rating: 51

ANGLE: Danny Cassidy, having been defeated by Phil Anders clean as a whistle looks forlornly on, until the rest of The Young Stallions come out to cheer up Pepper. They do the same for Danny and officially invite him to join them. He accepts.

Rating: 50

And thus the group swells in size again.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is in the Power Zone with Corey St.Hubbins. When asked about the Young Stallions, Prime Time laughs. We wouldn’t join them if he was on fire. They’re a joke. Corey responds that he wouldn’t be invited. No dweebs allowed (Prime Time looks shocked at this response from ‘just an interviewer.’) The two square up momentarily. Prime Time tells Corey to calm down before he hurts himself again. Then when Corey turns his back, Prime Time clobbers him with the Midwest Title. He beats him down and trashes the set while he’s at it.

Rating: 83

Now THAT is a promo. Prime Time showing a new level of viciousness is a great new layer to his character. And the crowd absolutely lap it up. His momentum is through the roof and it’s becoming impossible to ignore. Franchise Player in the making.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Charlie Corner vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde ©

In a good match, Prime Time Jack Pryde defeated Charlie Corner in 9:55 by pinfall after using a foreign object. Prime Time Jack Pryde makes defence number ten of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 63

Following on from his vicious assault on Corey, he then uses brass knucks to defeat his buddy Cali Cool too. It seems Prime Time is not a fan of the Young Stallions as a concept and has made it his business to beat them all.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Minnesota Awesome vs. The Ring Assassins

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Minnesota Awesome defeated The Ring Assassins in 9:54 when Clark Smallbone pinned Ray Cavalero with a Double Flying Elbows.

Rating: 39

I wonder whether Ray Cavalero is getting the message yet? I don’t know what’s worse, my treatment of the Ring Assassins, or my general ignoring of Rafe Sashay? One way or another they would learn exactly who is in charge around here.

SINGLES MATCH: LA Star #1 vs. Drake Constantine

In a good match, LA Star #1 defeated Drake Constantine in 20:40 by pinfall with a Double Stomp.

Rating: 56

Yes we’d given him the pay rise we wanted. But no, we hadn’t ‘got over it’ yet. For fear of burning through the feud too quickly, we split them into singles performers. Decent little match as it goes.

SINGLES MATCH: LA Star #2 vs. Edouard LeMieux

In a decent match, Edouard LeMieux defeated LA Star #2 in 9:33 by submission with a Stone Ankle Stretch.

Rating: 53

Our once incredibly deep tag team roster had thinned dramatically. Monsters of Mayhem, Lakota Braves, Cross River Connection, Ring Generals were all gone or split. Minnesota Awesome were taken seriously by absolutely no one. Main street Hustlers were still working out kinks and we were burying The Ring Assassins. Basically, we needed to put work into the division.

ANGLE: Scout and James Diaz are in the ring with their title belts. They’ve both fought Masked Stranger and Dreadnought and they’ve heard them bad-mouthing them on the website. Tonight they’re going to teach them a lesson on why they’re the champs and the other two are not.

Rating: 61

It was an ok promo, but disappointing considering.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Scout & James Diaz vs. Masked Stranger & Dreadnought

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Masked Stranger and Dreadnought defeated Scout and James Diaz in 21:39 when Dreadnought pinned Scout with a Dread Bomb following the lights going off and when they came back on, Scout was unconscious.

Rating: 66

What a match! Turns out, a little drama to finish the match and our undefeated champion getting pinned clean is a good way to build engagement.

ANGLE: White Rabbit plays again and informs Scout that all of his sins are about to come back to do to him, what he did to them. “Tick Tock Jeremy, Tick Tock.”

Rating: 68

OVERALL RATING: 54

After the show, while trying to listen-in to whatever Rafe, Ray and Egon were whispering about, I was approached by Phil Anders, Pepper Pelton and Danny Cassidy. They’ve been talking and they’re of the opinion that Curt is actually being underused. I should, apparently, stick a rocket on him and push him to the moon…

But who would sort my mail?

Next time on Minnesota Pro Wrestling… USPW are up to their old tricks again, and if I won’t push Curt, someone else will…

Welcome to Minnesota Pro Wrestling… We’ve got a Sunday Night’s Main Event to build to…

Curt’s Pack, which felt even more depressing knowing that he was developing into a top-level wrestler and I still had him doing things like this, noted a few things heading into February: Ade Nelson wins the Rip Chord XVIII, Primus beat Tommy Cornell for the USPW Title and our champion Scout had taken Samson Gillis on as protégé, which was just awesome. My mind drifted back to the Curt issue. He’d always been so good as a backstage worker and assistant that I’d never noticed his improvement in the ring. I felt dreadfully guilty about it. More than anyone, he deserved a push. But every time I’d thought of giving him one, someone else had joined, or left, or somehow disrupted meetings. And with plans set for the next couple of months, it didn’t look like there’d be a chance for significant growth for him either.

MPW POWER HOUR #41

Wednesday, Week 1, February, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 231

SINGLES MATCH: James Diaz vs. Dreadnought

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, James Diaz drew with Dreadnought in 10:16 following a double count out.

Rating: 61

Sometimes you just want two big hosses in the ring, battering each other for the enjoyment of the crowd. Once again James isn’t bested by the Man Monster as we consider all the possibilities of an extended feud with the two of them for the COTT World Title.

ANGLE: James Diaz grabs a microphone and says that he always enjoys a good fight and no one fights better than Dreadnought. Whenever the Man Monster wants a shot, he’s game. And may the best Monster win.

Rating: 54

TAG TEAM MATCH: Corner & Pelton vs. The Ring Assassins

In a decent match, The Ring Assassins defeated Charlie Corner and Pepper Pelton in 10:08 when Ray Cavalero pinned Pepper Pelton with a Belly To Back Suplex.

Rating: 53

Is it a comeback for the Ring Assassins, or a change of heart? I’m not sure for now. More than anything I’m testing to see how their behaviour changes depending on their in-ring results, if at all.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is back in the Power Zone, and Corey St.Hubbins is in an arm sling and a knee brace. Prime Time asks (sarcastically) ‘Oh no, what happened?’ and then laughs hysterically at his own comment. Having grabbed the mic from Corey, he then issues an open challenge from any of the Young Ponies, or whatever they’re called. He’s going to head to the ring and he’ll see one of them there. He carefully hands the mic back to Corey and obliterates him with a Super Kick. Then, without missing a beat he grabs and chair and hits multiple head shots with it, until Corey is bleeding and unconscious. Eventually Chief Two Eagles makes a rare appearance to pull Prime Time off the battered St.Hubbins.

Rating: 72

From asshole heel to mega heel in one easy step. There is no one in MPW, or possibly even the wrestling world with more heat than Prime Time Jack Pryde right now.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Danny Cassidy vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde

In a good match, Prime Time Jack Pryde defeated Danny Cassidy in 9:46 by pinfall with a handful of tights. Prime Time Jack Pryde makes defence number eleven of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 65

What a fantastic match as Prime Time backs up his white hot character with some top quality in-ring action too.

SINGLES MATCH: LA Star #2 vs. Drake Constatine

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, LA Star #2 defeated Drake Constantine in 10:10 by pinfall with a Flying Flip Neckbreaker.

Rating: 42

Sadly these two don’t click as we try to run through the altenative matchups betweent he two teams to extend the feud. Poor Drake is being made to look like the lesser of the New Satin Knights. What could possibly have brought on this sudden dip in form?

SINGLES MATCH: LA Star #1 vs. Edouard LeMieux

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Edouard LeMieux defeated LA Star #1 in 10:01 by submission with a Stone Ankle Stretch.

Rating: 55

That’s more like it. These two can go in the ring and there’s even a chance of some singles glory for them both. But we’re getting a few years ahead of ourselves here.

ANGLE: Zippy Deverell is in the ring with a mic. He was happy to see Danny get his ass handed to him earlier, so with nothing else to do, he’s here to offer a challenge to Scout for the title. If Scout can take a few minutes out of his life of being attacked by phantom spirits and old, weird music.

Rating: 67

Well we know Deverell has got the talent on the mic, this just reinforces things.

MPW CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE MATCH: Zippy Deverell vs. Scout ©

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Scout defeated Zippy Deverell in 21:42 by submission with a Texas Cloverleaf after interference from Danny Cassidy. Scout makes defence number three of the MPW Championship.

Rating: 62

Good match and Danny gets a bit of revenge on his arch-nemesis. But really, by now, you must know this is just a setup too…

ANGLE: “Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock! See you on Sunday Night Jeremy.”

Rating: 71

At last, the end date.

OVERALL RATING: 64

We got a cheeky 49,224 viewers and also received word that Remo Richardson had signed with USPW. At this stage all they needed was Greg Gauge and Matthew Keith and they’d have what, every major star in North American wrestling?

MPW POWER HOUR #42

Wednesday, Week 2, February, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 231

ANGLE: The Ring Assassins open the show and they want a shot at The LA Stars and to get their titles back.

Rating: 43

MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: The Ring Assassins vs. The LA Stars ©

In a good match, The LA Stars defeated The Ring Assassins in 22:28 when LA Star #1 pinned Ray Cavalero after Egon accidentally hit him using a foreign object. The LA Stars make defence number three of the MPW Tag Team.

Rating: 58

Cheaters never prosper Egon, you’d do well to remember that. The LA Stars are so far above The Ring Assassins already that it’s a little ridiculous. Sometimes the benefits to feeding the Other Wolf were too good to ignore.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is in the empty Power Zone. He mocks Corey St.Hubbins who is in hospital again. And begins a promo about how he’s coming for Drake Constantine next when Chief comes out. He says he and the Board of Directors (or Powers That Be if your prefer) have found a suitable replacement for Corey and he’ll be starting right now. Introducing your new interviewer and colour commentator… Big Smack Scott. The aging, muscle-bound Goliath comes out with his trademark bleach blonde beard and squares up to Prime Time.

“We got a problem kid?”

“Nope,” Prime Time replied. “No problem here. Good luck with the new job.”

And he leaved.

Rating: 84

Prime Time = Money. Obviously helped by our debuting new Colour Commentator. He was the best available on the market and brought with him his own fanbase, which was good enough for us. We also knew that his personality ‘issues’ could easily be handled by the Chief.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Drake Constantine vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde ©

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Drake Constantine defeated Prime Time Jack Pryde in 10:23 by disqualification after interference by Corey St.Hubbins.

Rating: 60

That’s right people, the heavily bandaged Corey St.Hubbins has finally recovered from his broken collar bone. Game on.

SINGLES MATCH: Pepper Pelton vs. Phil Anders

In a decent match, Pepper Pelton defeated Phil Anders in 10:22 by pinfall with a Fisherman's Suplex.

Rating: 53

Is Perfect Plex too on the nose do we think? Anyway, Pepper gets a big singles win against the master of joint mat wrestling. The sheer volume of young talented workers was embarrassing now. I couldn’t even really separate them into tag teams to help that thin division. Or could I?

ANGLE: Scout, Danny Cassidy and James Diaz cut a promo hyping their upcoming six man match with Masked Stranger, Dreadnought and Zippy Deverell.

Rating: 69

Good work from these three as Danny fits into the main event as naturally as he has everything else he’s been asked to do. I’m not saying he’ll be there for long, but good to know he can fill in for now.

TRIBAL WARFARE MATCH: Scout, James Diaz & Danny Cassidy vs. Masked Stranger, Dreadnought & Zippy Deverell

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Scout, James Diaz and Danny Cassidy drew with Dreadnought, Masked Stranger and Zippy Deverell in 29:27 following a double disqualification.

Rating: 63

Big schmozz and no reference to however has been stalking Scout etiher. Sometimes less is more. Not often of course, but sometimes.

OVERALL RATING: 68

That was one of our top shows and we got a tasty 50,334 viewers. On top of that after the show I noticed Scout teaching St.Hubbins some of his excellent psychology moves, showing that another mentor/protégé relationship had been formed. I’m not convinced St.Hubbins needs much, but any boost is a good thing in my eyes. Then I saw something which really caught my eye. Curt Meritt had in his locker, the RIPW Championship belt. Turns out he’d been hand-selected to have a run with the title after his incredible growth as a worker in the last year. The guilty knot in my chest returned.

MPW POWER HOUR #43

Wednesday, Week 3, February, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 231

ANGLE: Curt Meritt is out to start the show. He knows Minnesota Awesome have been riding high recently, but his boys the Main Street Hustlers were the future of this company and those pretty boy nobodies were about to learn what it’s like on the streets of NYC.

Rating: 50

Even with limited popularity, his skill on the microphone is noticeable. Dammit, I’d missed out in the creation of a really talented worker.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Minnesota Awesome vs. Main Street Hustlers

In a terrible match, Minnesota Awesome defeated Main Street Hustlers in 10:11 when Clark Smallbone pinned Samson Gillis with a Double Flying Elbows.

Rating: 35

Hey look, I was worried that we’d fundamentally broken Minnesota Awesome so they really needed more wins to heat them up. Although it was proving very, very difficult to do so.

ANGLE: Corey St.Hubbins is in the Power Zone, but this time he’s the one being interviewed by Big Smack Scott. He’s watched for almost a year as Prime Time has run his mouth, talked down to people and escaped with wins he didn’t deserve. That stops now. You don’t beat up people who are just doing their jobs (Big Smack Scott: “I’d like to see him try.”). At Sunday Night’s Main Event, St.Hubbins is challenging the weasel Prime Time and he’s going to beat him, fair and square, in the middle of the ring.

Rating: 69

Ooooo Mama! St.Hubbins months of listening to promos has paid off magnificently. He’s actually superb at them, already. His was a dangerous combination of ability and smarts. Sky is figuratively the limit for him in the industry.

SINGLES MATCH: Corey St.Hubbins vs. Phil Anders

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Corey St.Hubbins defeated Phil Anders in 8:05 by pinfall with a Switchblade Powerslam.

Rating: 43

And just like that he steps in, doesn’t miss a beat and pins a man whose stock is wavering slightly at the moment. Still, a good win for the man who we missed more than we knew.

TRIBAL WARFARE MATCH: The Young Stallions vs. Deverell & The Ring Assassins

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Zippy Deverell and The Ring Assassins defeated The Young Stallions (Charlie Corner, Edouard LeMieux and Drake Constantine) in 10:09 when Charlie Corner was disqualified while fighting Zippy Deverell.

Rating: 54

Good match between these lot. They’re becoming something of an amorphous blob of talent in our midcard. Amazingly, the whispering with The Ring Assassins appeared to have stopped too. Result!

SINGLES MATCH: James Diaz vs. Masked Stranger

In a superb match, James Diaz drew with Masked Stranger in 24:38 following a double count out.

Rating: 66

Two of our top guys fought to a crappy finish because we didn’t want either of them coming out of this looking beatable.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is out in the ring, no doubt avoiding Big Smack Scott in the Power Zone. He’ll happily take on Captain Glass Shoulder at Sunday Night’s Main Event, because while Corey has been chilling on the sideline, he’s been a man and has been winning actually wrestling matches. As for tonight, he’s accepting Scout’s open challenge to a match for the MPW Champinoship. He’ll even chuck in the Midwest Title for good measure to prove his seriousness.

Rating: 92

My God! He is officially the hottest act we’ve ever had. These promos are astounding and he backs it up in the ring.

SINGLES MATCH: Prime Time Jack Pryde vs. Scout

In a superb match, Prime Time Jack Pryde drew with Scout in 22:23 when the referee lost control and stopped the match after Dreadnought and Corey St.Hubbins ran in and attacked.

Rating: 67

And I believe I’m right in saying that’s Prime Time’s best ever match. What a time to be alive.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is celebrating his victory in the ring. Corey St.Hubbins runs in and attacks, beating Prime Time down into the mat.

Rating: 60

Got to heat up the challenger asap and by any means necessary or he’s going to be unbelievable as someone who can lace Prime Time’s shoes, never mind face him in the ring.

OVERALL RATING: 70

As is often the case, heading into the big show at the end of the month, we knock it out the park. You cannot say we’re not consistent. We also got 54,099 viewers. Curt’s Pack highlighted that there’d been a change in Booker in Pittsburgh Steel Wrestling, with none other than the Hardcore Icon Chris Caulfield taking over. Their move towards a rebirthed DAVE continues at pace I see.

MPW POWER HOUR #44

Wednesday, Week 4, February, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 240

MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: The Manifesto vs. The LA Stars ©

In a decent match, The LA Stars defeated The Manifesto in 7:33 when LA Star #1 pinned Bobby Marks with a Star Destroyer. The LA Stars make defence number four of the MPW Tag Team.

Rating: 53

A new tag team to get onto the main show. They’d actually last been seen in the battle royal on Twin City Showdown. But they gave a great account of themselves here as we look to bolster the tag division.

ANGLE: Zippy Deverell is out to taunt Danny Cassidy, as he loves to do. He ends with a phrase he’s been saying for a couple of weeks now “I’m not just a Kentuckian, I’m a CAN-tuckian” and unbelievably the crowd chant it along with him. And a catchphrase is born.

Rating: 63

We’d get that on a t-shirt by the end of the day or my name wasn’t Sellout T. Huckster.

TRIBAL WARFARE MATCH: The Young Stallions vs. Sashay & The Ring Assassins

In a decent match, Rafe Sashay and The Ring Assassins defeated The Young Stallions (Charlie Corner, Danny Cassidy and Pepper Pelton) in 10:08 when Rafe Sashay pinned Charlie Corner by using underhanded tactics.

Rating: 52

The Ring Assassins rehabilitation continues and we even teamed them with Sashay as a test of their newfound respect for authority. As long as they played the game, we’d play it too. Decent match I must say.

TAG TEAM MATCH: New Satin Knights vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde & Phil Anders

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Prime Time Jack Pryde and Phil Anders defeated New Satin Knights in 10:08 when Phil Anders submitted Drake Constantine with a Nebraska Stretcher following botched interference by Charlie Corner.

Rating: 59

Oof, Cali Cool does his best to help out his boys, but ends up costing them. Even if you’re good-looking and talented, you can still make mistakes apparently.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is out to watch Corey St.Hubbins in his match. Because he’s a professional and a winner.

Rating: 76

Damn straight you are champ!

SINGLES MATCH: Corey St.Hubbins vs. Zippy Deverell

In a decent match, Corey St.Hubbins defeated Zippy Deverell in 9:40 by pinfall with a Switchblade Powerslam.

Rating: 50

Another clean win as his heroic comeback from injury has lit a fuse in the audience, they are now firmly behind St.Hubbins, even against a popular and cocky heel like Deverell.

ANGLE: Scout is out to say he knows himself and he knows what he’s done. There’s no secrets in his life and nothing worth the ire he’s drawn from whoever. But as a fighter, he’ll step up against anyone at Sunday Night’s Main Event.

Rating: 67

TAG TEAM MATCH: Scout & James Diaz vs. Masked Stranger & Dreadnought

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, James Diaz and Scout drew with Masked Stranger and Dreadnought in 22:06 following a double count out.

Rating: 64

Standard, ‘no one can lose before a big event’ main event. Maybe I should switch this to a battle royal or something in future? I just love a big brawl where the ref loses control.

OVERALL RATING: 66

With 52,152 viewers in the bank, we were steaming into Sunday Night’s Main Event with all the momentum in the world. Now we just hoped operation White Rabbit paid off.

MPW Sunday Night’s Main Event

Sunday, Week 4, February, 2023

Live from Wabasha Street Caves [Downtown, St. Paul, Minnesota]

Attendance: 743

15-MAN BATTLE ROYAL: In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Curt Meritt won a battle royal in 9:48. The other members of the 'final four' were Rafe Sashay, Ace Youngblood and The Masked Mauler, with Rafe Sashay being the final elimination. Rafe Sashay got the most eliminations over the course of the match.

Rating: 44

More than anything it’s nice to give everyone a shot at a match on the main show and not just a pre-show. Plus we wanted proof that we occasionally pushed Curt to some sort of victory. It wasn’t enough, but it was a start.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Minnesota Awesome vs. The Ring Assassins

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Minnesota Awesome defeated The Ring Assassins in 9:48 when Clark Smallbone pinned Egon Merowitz with a Double Flying Elbows.

Rating: 45

A clean win for the completely forgettable and utterly buried Minnesota Awesome. I was firmly of the belief that they were finished as a team in MPW. But we still gave them the win…

SINGLES MATCH: Charlie Corner vs. ‘The Nebraska Stud’ Phil Anders

In a decent match, Phil Anders defeated Charlie Corner in 10:05 by submission with a Nebraska Stretcher after blatantly cheating.

Rating: 45

Anders has been on a bit of a losing streak recently, so it was time to start heating him up ready for a big storyline we had planned for the year ahead. Charlie could afford the loss, especially as he cost his own teammates victory a week ago.

SINGLES MATCH: Danny Cassidy vs. Zippy Deverell

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Zippy Deverell defeated Danny Cassidy in 9:42 by pinfall with a Kentucky Derby.

Rating: 50

Zippy has an impact finisher (spinning neckbreaker) and a win to boot. And it was clean, over his long-time rival. Was this the end of their rivalry once and for all? Probably not, but it was certainly a ‘moment’ in it.

COTT WORLD TITLE MATCH: James Diaz vs. Masked Stranger

In a superb match, James Diaz defeated Masked Stranger in 9:55 by pinfall with an Asian Thumb Spike. James Diaz makes defence number two of the COTT World Heavyweight title.

Rating: 62

Clean win for the Son of the Monster. I liked Masked Stranger a lot, but I felt his character was more interested in the MPW Championship than this (mere) World Title. Plus James had proven a popular champion with COTT and Chief was, at heart, a unifier of an owner. He knew that when the alliance worked together, it worked best. Good match from these two too.

SINGLES MATCH: Pepper Pelton vs. Dreadnought

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Dreadnought defeated Pepper Pelton in 6:25 by pinfall with a Dread Bomb.

Rating: 52

Effectively a squash match here, although we didn’t bury Pepper. Since losing the title, Dreadnought has been spinning his wheels a bit. It was very tough to know how to use him other than sparingly as a special attraction. But that felt like a waste.

MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: New Satin Knights vs. The LA Stars ©

In a good match, The LA Stars defeated New Satin Knights in 22:08 when LA Star #2 pinned Drake Constantine with a Star Destroyer following botched interference from Charlie Corner. The LA Stars make defence number three of the COTT World Tag Team titles. The LA Stars make defence number five of the MPW Tag Team.

Rating: 61

Oh Charlie. He’s done it again. So eager to please and so prone to mistakes. Shame really as it was developing into a dynamite tag team match, up there with LA Stars vs. Monsters of Mayhem matches. The New Satin Knights would get another shot for sure, but it’s a shame they didn’t get the job done here.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Corey St.Hubbins vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde

In a good match, Corey St.Hubbins defeated Prime Time Jack Pryde in 10:22 by pinfall with a Switchblade Powerslam. Corey St.Hubbins wins the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 61

Firs things first, these two have great chemistry, which is like finding MONEY! Add to that that Prime Time lost, clean, for the first time in forever and that there was a title on the line. And it was a great match with a wrestler who was, at best, our 14th most popular worker before this match and this is a future classic. There’s no doubt that barring a raid, these two would go on to have many more matches against one another.

ANGLE: Scout arrives and waits in the ring for his opponent. The lights dim and a

. The jumbotron flashes with the mysterious words from previous events, which fade away and are replaced with Thom Barrowman, which turns into One Man Army and finally… GUIDE!

Rating: 69

Too obvious?

MPW CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE MATCH: Guide vs. Scout ©

In an exceptional match, Scout defeated Guide in 24:35 by disqualification. Scout makes defence number five of the MPW Championship.

Rating: 75

And that is the best match in company history right there. The former tag team legends unsurprisingly have great chemistry and they put on a show for the fans. It’s a brutal, fast-paced match despite their ages and we end with Guide going berserk and beating on Scout until the referee has no choice but to call for a disqualification. That is how you keep a new challenging strong without immediately switching the title.

OVERALL RATING: 73

scmurph01 - 7/9

Our best show ever drew us 55,497 viewers on WrestleWorld and backstage after the show was a lively affair. Everyone welcomed Guide with open arms and his personality fit in perfectly. Chief looked as delighted as I’d ever seen him, while Prime Time was schmoozing his way around the room just being popular and well-liked. That’s when I saw them. Rafe Sashay and the Ring Assassins were whispering to one another. They then called over Kilikikopoa Nani and Pablo Vicente and started to mock Roger Monteiro behind his back. I’d warned them about this, and there they were. Bold as brass on this day of celebration. Rafe was a locker room cancer and had been since the start. He never stopped politicking. Ever. And now he was dragging others into his orbit. I felt the blood rising in my ears and the sounds of laughter from elsewhere were drowned out bit a high-pitched whistling.

Welcome to Minnesota Pro Wrestling… Where we feed the Other Wolf…

With the party still raging, I wandered to my office to calm down. Chief followed me moments later and shut the door behind him.

“Everything alright Little Wolf?”

I exploded. Ranting about Sashay and how he was upsetting the harmony of the backstage group and poisoning others. How he was talented, but not as talented as his behaviour suggested. To his credit, Chief didn’t even try to calm me down. He just listened and when I’d finished simply asked “So what is it we’re going to do about it.” I looked around the room for something to throw, but instead I stormed to the door opened it and yelled for Rafe Sashay, The Ring Assassins, Kili, Pablo and Dreadnought. Confused somewhat they wandered in and I told them to shut the door behind them.

“You Sashay, what did I tell you?”

Sashay behaved like someone who’d just understood the point. I repeated the question and like a petulant child he imitated my voice and repeated my words back to me. Kili laughed.

“Correct, and you decided in your infinite wisdom to ignore that, and keep doing it. You’re a malcontent, a poison, a nobody! And we don’t need you, or you laughing hyena friend. You’re both fired!”

“Fired? You can’t do that!” Sashay reacted and looked to Chief for support. Chief simply responded “Goodbye.”

With Sashay storming out the office, Kili reacted differently. As expected did not speak, but instead reacted instinctively and moved towards me, violence in his eyes. Dreadnought’s ham-sized hand grabbed him by the shoulder and stopped him dead. Still without speaking, he narrowed his eyes to stare at me one last time and then left.

I turned my attention to the Ring Assassins, “Now, are you two on-board with what we’re doing here. Yes or no?”

Egon and Ray did not look pleased at all. In fact they were furious about what had just happened. But after a moment, they said they were. I couldn’t tell if they meant it, and frankly I didn’t care. Things were going to change around here from now on, anyone with even a remotely negative influence would be gone. Somewhere deep in my soul, the Other Wolf howled its approval.

MPW POWER HOUR #45

Wednesday, Week 1, March, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 250

ANGLE: Guide is out to the ring with a big smile on his face.

“Jeremy, Jeremy, Jeremy. Is it nice seeing your old best friend arriving here in Minnesota? Reminding you of your past? The things we did together? We were unstoppable weren’t we? Nothing could touch us. Two Kings on tour together. But then, something changed. You decided that you didn’t like what we did. You became preachy, like you were better than me. YOU’RE NOT BETTER THAN ME! Hahahahahahaha. Sorry, I’m getting ahead of myself. I didn’t think it was right you see. It’s not correct. I would hate for you to be able to lie about who you are and where you came from and to fool the idiots around here. But to my surprise they ate it up. They actually cheered you. There is nothing stronger than humanity’s desire to gloss over the nasty stuff. The raw, animalistic past for a brighter, happier, nicer tomorrow. But it’s dishonest. It’s disingenuous. The truth is ugly, and brutal and REAL! So I’m here to remind you of it. Every week. I’ll just be here to lead you back to the truth of what we’ve done. You’re not going to get away it. If I couldn’t, you shouldn’t too. It’s time to reintroduce some chaos into your life. Because the thing about chaos is… it’s fair.”

Rating: 75

Wonderfully unhinged performance from Guide here as he threatens to be different to other heels. He’s not looking for personal glory, he’s simply here to spoil Scout’s life. This is going to be fun.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Minnesota Awesome vs. The Ring Assassins

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Minnesota Awesome defeated The Ring Assassins in 5:34 when Perry Longstaff pinned Ray Cavalero with a Missile Dropkick.

Rating: 36

Despite their agreement to the new terms, lessons had to be given. We ran this company and we were serious. Minnesota Awesome despite picking up a series of wins were still gaining no reaction from the crowd, which was a growing concern.

ANGLE: Zippy Deverell is in the Power Zone with Big Smack Scott. He welcomes his ‘friends’ for the evening; The Nebraska Stud and The Masked Mauler. This might be the most dominant three-man team ever assembled in MPW and tonight they’re facing the annoying Bros; The Young Stallions. A group so awful, so underwhelming, so disappointing that they would welcome someone like Danny Cassidy to them. But seeing as Danny won’t make the right decision to leave on his own accord, Zip the Lip is going to have to help him along because he’s not a Kentuckian, he’s a CAN-tuckian!

Rating: 60

Zip always brings the goods.

TRIBAL WARFARE MATCH: The Young Stallions vs. Zippy Deverell, Phil Anders & The Masked Mauler

In a decent match, Zippy Deverell, Phil Anders and The Masked Mauler defeated The Young Stallions (Danny Cassidy, Charlie Corner and Pepper Pelton) in 7:39 when The Masked Mauler submitted Pepper Pelton with an Iron Claw!?!

Rating: 50

That’s right baby! The Mauler is back to winning. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the IRON CLAW!?! But it is lovely to remind ourselves that he’s a member of the roster. Quiet guy, but a decent worker.

ANGLE: New Satin Knights are out in the ring and they welcome singles matches against the LA Stars. They’ll back themselves in a fight every day of the week, and twice on Tuesday’s. So let’s get to it! It’s STRETCHING TIME!

Rating: 63

Ok so the catchphrase needs work, but still our young tag team are good on the mic and bring the pain in the ring.

SINGLES MATCH: Drake Constantine vs. LA Star #1

In a good match, LA Star #1 defeated Drake Constantine in 10:17 by pinfall with a Double Stomp.

Rating: 56

I’m not sure I’m over his outrageous pay rise request. Eventually I’d forgive him, he’s only doing what he thinks (knows) he can get away with. Solid match though.

SINGLES MATCH: Edouard LeMieux vs. LA Star #2

In a good match, Edouard LeMieux defeated LA Star #2 in 10:04 by submission with a Stone Ankle Stretch.

Rating: 58

And it’s a case of the two teams exchanging wins to prove that they’re on the same level. They’re actually all adept at singles work too it seems, which was great for the Knights, but I couldn’t see LA Star #2 being a successful singles worker. Not with that name.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Masked Stranger vs. Corey St.Hubbins ©

In a good match, Corey St.Hubbins defeated Masked Stranger in 8:10 by pinfall with a Switchblade Powerslam. Corey St.Hubbins makes defence number one of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 53

Clean win for the up-and-coming Minnesota Kid himself. Big win too and very few people beat Stranger clean like this. Not unless…

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is in the ring. HE’s here to watch the main event. Sepcifically James Diaz. They’ve been around the block those two and he knows Diaz well. He knows him well enough to know all his weaknesses. And Prime Time is now of the opinion that he’s the greatest wrestler of all time and is deserving of a shot at the World Title.

Rating: 86

Goodness me, when Prime Time is on, he’s really on! A feud between him and James Diaz over the COTT World Title feels like money to me. It’s the simple way of introducing him into the main event scene proper without disturbing the Scout/Guide showdowns.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Scout & James Diaz vs. Guide & Dreadnought

In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, Guide and Dreadnought defeated Scout and James Diaz in 19:46 when Dreadnought pinned Scout with a Dread Bomb.

Rating: 65

The Man Monster pins the champion after a great match between these four. Strangely Dreadnought did not have Masked Stranger with him at ringside.

OVERALL RATING: 68

55,230 viewers and a top 10 show for us, main-evented by our strong four main event talents. Throw Prime Time in there like a hand grenade and we could be in for a storming set of final matches going forward. This was especially important because we’d discovered the news that Masked Stranger had signed with our old friends TCW. We weren’t surprised at this point and really, we’d missed his peak as a main event talent. But we’d take some happiness in our work to get him ready for the big show, and as always, wish him all the best.

MPW POWER HOUR #46

Wednesday, Week 2, March, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 264

TAG TEAM MATCH: The Manifesto vs. The Ring Assassins

In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, The Manifesto defeated The Ring Assassins in 8:03 when Bobby Marks submitted Ray Cavalero.

Rating: 28

Oh dear, how the mighty have fallen. The Ring Assassins, once a dominant team in MPW were now jobbing to our green as grass rookies. The Manifesto (terrible name aside) had some decent upside as a team and this was their first step towards potentially relevance.

SINGLES MATCH: Danny Cassidy vs. Masked Stranger

In a good match, Danny Cassidy defeated Masked Stranger in 5:32 by pinfall with a Southern Justice.

Rating: 49

It’s the goodbye tour for Masked Stranger as we’d job him out of town the old-fashioned way. He was happy to help make the next generation of top stars for us too, because he was a class act.

ANGLE: Triple Threat by Anilyst starts playing on the speakers and out struts… Davis Wayne Newton. He’s heard the fuss about this MPW and he’s come to check out the talent. Being the ultimate Triple Threat of professional wrestling, he doesn’t expect there to be much to match him. But he is nothing, if not open-minded. Bring him the best we have to offer.

Rating: 36

A man who has the talent and skill, but never quite stepped up to succeed at a high-level was in to prove his worth. This was a decent start in fairness, especially considering nobody in the audience really recognised him.

SINGLES MATCH: Pepper Pelton vs. Davis Wayne Newton

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but terrible wrestling, Davis Wayne Newton defeated Pepper Pelton in 8:23 by pinfall with a Fisherman's Suplex.

Rating: 40

My God, did he just beat the Perfect One with his own finisher? Could we be in for a battle of the Fisherman’s Suplexes? Probably not, but knowing us and the mood I was in, maybe.

ANGLE: New Satin Knights are with Big Smack Scott in the Power Zone. They’re enjoying the back-and-forth of their matches with the LA Stars, but they’re curious when they’re getting another title shot. They’re not here for a good time. They’re here to win. Big Smack Scott points out they have had chances, but Cali Cool Charlie Corner keeps messing things up. The Knights accept that, but have given Charlie strict instructions not to get involved anymore. They can do it themselves.

Rating: 54

Good interview from the youngsters and a mature way to deal with Charlie’s crazy antics. Isn’t brotherhood a great thing?

MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: Main Street Hustlers vs. The LA Stars ©

In a decent match, The LA Stars defeated Main Street Hustlers in 9:35 when LA Star #1 pinned Spike with a Star Destroyer. The LA Stars make defence number six of the MPW Tag Team.

Rating: 53

Main Street Hustlers fulfil their role nicely. I’d have to make sure not to job them out so much that they become an almost impossible reclamation job like Minnesota Awesome though. A few wins strung together in the future was a must.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is in the ring. He misses having gold around his waste and seeing as James Diaz isn’t around to beat for the World Title, he’s going to invoke his rematch clause on Corey St.Hubbins. The Man made of Glass. The Biggest Head in Professional Wrestler. Someone with a face you just want to slap. Get out here so Prime Time can make you famous… again!

Rating: 72

I just love the guy so much. I want to run away with him and have him just perform promos for me all day every day.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Prime Time Jack Pryde vs. Corey St.Hubbins ©

In a good match, Corey St.Hubbins defeated Prime Time Jack Pryde in 21:37 by pinfall by using underhanded tactics. Corey St.Hubbins makes defence number two of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 62

Good match and proof that St.Hubbins isn’t above a bit of cheating to get by. That’s a good sign from a champion. Prime Time is so good that he could lose every match but remain relevant off his promos alone. That made him one of the most valuable performers we had.

ANGLE: Guide is out to join the commentary team. He says hello to Big Smack Scott like they’re old friends, and he looks at me with disdain. He’s loving it here in MPW. The crowd are all idiots, the wrestlers are all tiny nobodies and his old friend Scout is here to torment. What’s not to like? Big Smack laughs and agrees.

Rating: 70

Guide is the sort of mad-man every promotion needs. An absolute wild card who will do the unexpected.

MPW CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE MATCH: Dreadnought vs. Scout ©

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Dreadnought drew with Scout in 22:18 following a double disqualification.

Rating: 64

Great match which ends when Dreadnought throws Scout into the announce booth. A furious Guide yells at Scout for being weak and then slides into the ring to attack Dreadnought. The Man Monster does not even go down to one knee after the attack though, which impresses Guide. And distracts him long enough for Scout to blindside him. After the referee throws the match out Scout batters Guide to the mat. Before passing out, Guide gives Scout two thumbs up and smiles.

OVERALL RATING: 65

52,742 viewers and something of a hot streak. Things were going well for us right now, but I could already see a time where our main event stars didn’t have the juice or popularity to get better matches than the early 70 mark. What we needed was some bigger names coming in who could help elevate our younger stars. Scout and Guide would do that eventually, but at the moment they were tearing the house down together.

Welcome to Minnesota Pro Wrestling… Where we say goodbye to MPW Royalty…

Masked Stranger was excited about his future in TCW and we couldn’t blame him. I also didn’t mention that since signing there Ernest Youngman had won approximately 4 matches and was jobbed out the rest of the time. But who was I to spoil someone’s day?

MPW POWER HOUR #47

Wednesday, Week 3, March, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 254

SINGLES MATCH: Pepper Pelton vs. Masked Stranger

In a decent match, Pepper Pelton defeated Masked Stranger in 7:45 by pinfall with a Fisherman's Suplex.

Rating: 45

And with that, Masked Stranger was done in MPW. He was our inaugural Midwest Heavyweight Champion, perennial in-ring workhorse and leader of one of the best stables we’d ever had. Circumstance had kept him from fulfilling his destiny with the main title, but he left a legacy which wouldn’t be forgotten.

ANGLE: Corey St.Hubbins is in the Power Zone and he’s happy that there’s so much interest in HIS Midwest Heavyweight Title. There’s so many challengers, he’s struggling to keep up with the list of names he gets to face, and beat, in the ring. He’s the luckiest toy in Toy Town. And after almost a year on the shelf, he’s ready to go.

Rating: 73

Dynamite work from a future superstar and he’s right. The list of midcard names looking for a shot is long and gives us plenty of scope for some fun.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Zippy Deverell vs. Corey St.Hubbins ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Corey St.Hubbins defeated Zippy Deverell in 22:15 by pinfall with a Switchblade Powerslam after Charlie Corner interfered. Corey St.Hubbins makes defence number three of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 42

Charlie Corner is the king of interference. He’s like a bouncing ball of energy who randomly appears in the ring to cause problems. This time he helps out the rising star of the Young Stallions. I really wasn’t sure about that name though. Might need some tweaking and obviously there’s roughly four thousand people in the stable too, which I also needed to address.

ANGLE: Davis Wayne Newton is out to the ring and he’s identified what he wants. He wants the Midwest Heavyweight Title, so Corey St.Hubbins name is marked.

Rating: 43

Each week a little better. DWN could be a decent worker for us if he keeps this up.

SINGLES MATCH: Ace Youngblood vs. Davis Wayne Newton

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Davis Wayne Newton defeated Ace Youngblood in 8:15 by submission with a STF.

Rating: 35

Another clean victory as he presents his credentials for a shot at glory. Ace Youngblood is something of the forgotten man of the company these days. His salary is high considering how little we use him.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is now out. Tonight, there is a battle royal to determine the number one contender for the MPW Championship. It’s his chance to finally force his way into contention and the other nine idiots in there with him better watch it. It’s Prime Time’s TIME!

Rating: 75

It’s his natural charisma which is blossoming out in each and every promo. Even when we doesn’t say much, the way he says it is incredible. MPW has never seen someone this skilled at controlling the crowd.

NO.1 CONTENDERS BATTLE ROYAL: Charlie Corner, Drake Constantine, Dreadnought, Edouard LeMieux, Guide, James Diaz, LA Star #1, LA Star #2, Phil Anders and Prime Time Jack Pryde

In a good match, Guide won a battle royal in 21:42. The other members of the 'final four' were James Diaz, Prime Time Jack Pryde and Dreadnought, with James Diaz being the final elimination. Dreadnought got the most eliminations over the course of the match.

Rating: 64

And yet Prime Time cannot overcome Guide, James or Dreadnought. An impenetrable wall of muscle and wrestling talent. Guide meanwhile sneaks a win by dumping Diaz just after he’d gone toe-to-toe with Dreadnought.

ANGLE: Guide grabs a microphone after the match:

“Hey Scout, SCOUT! Did you see me? I won it, I won it for you. I know you’re not happy being the champion. It’s too much for you. And I understand. And I promise you, once I’ve relieved you that burden, I’m going to get rid of the title and we can get to work on fixing you. It’s ok Scout, I know you prefer Scout to Jeremey. We’ve got this. Brothers for life Scout. SCOUT?”

Rating: 69

This guy is absolutely nuts and I love it.

OVERALL RATING: 64

Backstage the guys were surrounding Masked Stranger and wishing him well for the future. Curt grabbed the trash can and lighter fluid and set it alight. As is tradition, Stranger walked over to it and threw in the unwrapped tape from his wrists. He then, for the first time ever, removed his mask and threw it in too. Huh, so that’s what he looks like. I held a promo photo of him from the day I signed him and held it on the wall next to the ones of Ernest, Logan and Tennessee, but instead I put it into my top draw. He was good, but he wasn’t them.

MPW POWER HOUR #48

Wednesday, Week 4, March, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 256

ANGLE: Davis Wayne Newton is out for a rematch with that Native American guy with the weird hat. But he doesn’t want Corey St.Hubbins to think he’s forgotten about him. He hasn’t. That title is his, because he’s the only Triple Threat in MPW.

Rating: 38

When in doubt, run it again!

SINGLES MATCH: Ace Youngblood vs. Davis Wayne Newton

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Davis Wayne Newton defeated Ace Youngblood in 10:14 by pinfall with a Fisherman's Suplex.

Rating: 36

I really had to tell him that Pepper used the Fisherman’s Suplex and he should stick to the STF. Decent little match, but Ace ruined it by almost dropping Newton on his head. DWN was obviously angry backstage, whereas Ace looked like he couldn’t care less. Demotivation could be a killer it seemed.

ANGLE: Minnesota Awesome are out to trash the Main Street Hustlers. They say some stuff, but are drowned out the sound of booing.

Rating: 20

Jesus that was bad. These are a face tag team who’ve been winning quite a bit. But because I jobbed them out non-stop for years, I’ve effectively trained the audience to not want to see or hear them do anything but lose. Oh God.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Minnesota Awesome vs. The Ring Assassins

In a bout that didn't have much heat and terrible wrestling, Minnesota Awesome defeated The Ring Assassins in 8:25 when Clark Smallbone pinned Egon Merowitz with a Double Flying Elbows.

Rating: 21

And because I didn’t call and audible in my bad planning with Awesome, they stunk up the joint with one of our former premier tag teams. The crowd just booed these guys mercilessly throughout the entirety of the short match.

ANGLE: James Diaz comes out to rapturous applause (following Minnesota Awesome apparently makes you a superstar). As the only World Champion in the promotion, he’s looking for some opposition. He’s also heard that whiny little bi*** Prime Time trying to get his attention. If he wants the attention of the champ, he better do something to earn it.

Rating: 70

So James is developing into one of our bonafide superstars. This was good stuff and uplifting considering the catastrophe of the last couple of segments.

SINGLES MATCH: LA Star #2 vs. Curt Meritt

In a decent match, Curt Meritt defeated LA Star #2 in 10:19 by pinfall with a DDT.

Rating: 50

That’s right, he haven’t forgotten about Curt as he gets his biggest single’s win to date. I was still trying to come up with a long-term plan for him, but in the meantime we’ve managed to avoid killing his character like we have other enhancement talents.

ANGLE: Scout is in the Power Zone with Big Smack Scott. The two get into a fractious argument about Guide with Big Smack defending his actions and Scout saying he’s unhinged and needs to see a specialist and to leave him alone. The Champion looks flustered by his appearance in MPW though.

Rating: 61

Solid character work from both guys here as Big Smack is quite the talker himself. The feud continues nicely.

SINGLES MATCH: LA Star #1 vs. Zippy Deverell

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Zippy Deverell defeated LA Star #1 in 20:34 by pinfall with a Kentucky Derby.

Rating: 57

And the other half of the tag team champions loses clean. It’s a sad state of affairs that we didn’t have any other legitimate teams to face them and we’d burnt through their feud with New Satin Knights too quickly. Bad planning on my part.

EIGHT-MAN TAG TEAM MATCH: The Young Stallions vs. Prime Time, Anders & Main Street Hustlers

In a decent match, The Young Stallions (Corey St.Hubbins, Charlie Corner, Edouard LeMieux and Drake Constantine) defeated Prime Time Jack Pryde, Phil Anders and Main Street Hustlers in 9:36 when Charlie Corner pinned Prime Time Jack Pryde with a Corner Cutter.

Rating: 53

Big loss for Prime Time there as he was so desperate to prove to James Diaz that he deserved a shot, he over-extended himself and gets pinned clean by Cali Cool

OVERALL RATING: 57

That was one of the most disappointing shows in a while, and it was my fault. I’d been mulling over the issues we faced at the moment and outside of the main event, we were trading water. We definitely had the talent available, but the stagnation of the roster as a whole was a problem. Wrestling works in cycles and if you remain loyal to everyone, you don’t serve anyone well. So I called a meeting in my office and invited a select few in.

Ace Youngblood, Ben Williams, Alistair Shufflebottom, Clark Smallbone, Perry Longstaff, Egon Merowitz and Ray Cavalero all shuffled into the office. I told them that most had been with us since the beginning and I was grateful for everything they had done to help us become what we are. But change was coming and I didn’t want to hold them back from reaching their fullest potential. As such, immediately their contracts were wrapped up and I hoped to see them again in the future. Alistair, Ben and Minnesota Awesome thanked me quite cheerily and left the office. Egon and Ray, I felt, had seem this coming months ago and simply left. With only Ace remaining; an awkward silence filled the void of the sounds of the door shutting.

“You never gave me a chance. Not really,” he said.

“You’re probably right Ace, but…”

“No buts please. You failed here. Not me. I’m every bit the worker of half the guys in there. I created a move here and was part of a tag team you failed to push at the right time. I don’t want you to think that I understand, because of business or whatever. YOU failed. If I wrestled like you run a book, I’d have been left behind years ago. You should be ashamed.”

And with that he left. As he walked by the trash can, he was the only one to take off his wrist tape and threw it in. Without a backwards look, he left.

MPW POWER HOUR #49

Wednesday, Week 1, April, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 262

SINGLES MATCH: William Jetterson vs. Curt Meritt

In a decent match, Curt Meritt defeated William Jetterson in 9:48 by pinfall with a DDT.

Rating: 48

The great chemistry note is always something wonderful to hear when talking about workers, doubly do when it involves two people of around the same level. Jetterson has fallen away in favour in recent months, but is still a solid hand while we continue to scratch around for a Meritt-centric story to help propel him where he belongs.

MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: The Manifesto vs. The LA Stars ©

In a decent match, The Manifesto defeated The LA Stars in 10:07 when LA Star #1 was disqualified while fighting Jamar Lennon.

Rating: 49

It’s a cheap win, but still a win. Always good to raise a new team up without damaging the champions. But with the recent releases, the number of viable teams has decreased. That was something we’d address in the near future.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is with Big Smack Scott in the Power Zone. He’s there to talk about the big dummy, James Diaz. He gets that Diaz would be scared of him, he’s the present and the future of professional wrestling. But making someone jump through hoops is a bit much. But it’s ok, he knows next week there’s a battle royal to determine a new number one contender for the COTT World Title. So he’ll just win that and then get his hands on the lug.

Rating: 77

Pure gold.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Phil Anders vs. Corey St.Hubbins ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Corey St.Hubbins defeated Phil Anders in 9:53 by count out. Corey St.Hubbins makes defence number four of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 53

It’s a win, but not a convincing one. Nebraska Stud occupies a rarified place on the roster. He’s got the talent of a main event star, but will always likely be the enforcer of the midcard. It’s a good place for him and one we would utilise him in. Wins and losses didn’t affect him as much as others, which helped too.

ANGLE: Zippy Deverell is in the Power Zone now and for once, he’s not going to talk about the Fake Cowboy Danny Cassidy. Today he wants to tell the story of a man called Corey. Corey it seems, was being groomed for success from the day he was born. Raised in Minnesota, high school quarterback and all round athletic God. He’s a man who debuted, got injured came back and immediately won the Midwest Heavyweight Title. Whereas Zippy has been here all along. Working his ass off for a crumb of recognition. St.Hubbins may have been born to greatness, but Zip has thrust it upon himself. And that’s why he’s the true champion of MPW.

Rating: 73

Wonderful from Zip here as he again, despite obviously being the heel, is consistent with his own internal story of him being a hero.

COTT WORLD TITLE MATCH: The Masked Mauler vs. James Diaz ©

In a decent match, James Diaz defeated The Masked Mauler in 21:32 by pinfall with an Asian Thumb Spike. James Diaz makes defence number three of the COTT World Heavyweight title.

Rating: 54

James Diaz is trolling Prime Time now surely? Just ups and gives Masked Mauler a shot for no other reason than he can.

ANGLE: Guide is heading to the announce booth again. He’s here to watch Scout fulfil his destiny and leave the title behind. He knows that Scout doesn’t want it. He’s never wanted that level of responsibility. He’s a soldier, not an officer. And he, Guide, is going to make sure to help his friend, even if his friend doesn’t realise he needs help.

Rating: 69

Solid story communication from the veteran right there. It feels inevitable that Guide will cost Scout the title one day. But which day?

MPW CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE MATCH: Dreadnought vs. Scout ©

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Dreadnought drew with Scout in 23:03 following a double count out.

Rating: 59

Neither man could afford a loss here, so I had them brawl outside the ring and get counted out when Guide interjected himself into the fray.

OVERALL RATING: 63

53,188 viewers tuned in to see that show, which was decent as the slow build-up of our fanbase continues. It felt odd having such a small pool of wrestlers to work with, but we’d address that eventually. For now, it kept our story-telling tight and focused.

MPW POWER HOUR #50: Brawl for it All

Wednesday, Week 2, April, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 243

SINGLES MATCH: LaDarrell Mills vs. The Masked Mauler

In a terrible match, LaDarrell Mills defeated The Masked Mauler in 9:52 by pinfall, illegally using the ropes for leverage.

Rating: 35

Fresh-faced newcomer joins the roster and immediately gets a win. We didn’t want to kill this mini-feud dead from the outset, so it was a tainted win. But the big guy comes to us very highly regarded and we’d happily us him as fodder for a year while he learned the ropes.

ANGLE: James Diaz and Scout are in the Power Zone. While Diaz waits for his new number one contender to emerge, he’s agreed to team with Scout to take on Guide and his mystery partner. Knowing that lunatic his partner could be a horse, a ham sandwich or a packet of chips. But Diaz’s main man Scout couldn’t risk it. So here they are, and they’re ready.

Rating: 55

Bog standard top faces promo here.

MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: Main Street Hustlers vs. The LA Stars ©

In a decent match, The LA Stars defeated Main Street Hustlers in 10:18 when LA Star #1 pinned Spike with a Star Destroyer. The LA Stars make defence number eight of the MPW Tag Team.

Rating: 56

Great match considering the Main Street Hustlers are not setting the world on fire of anything. Although the big story was just about to come…

ANGLE: The match is over and The LA Stars are celebrating. State Of Destruction are here! The monstrous tag team charge the ring and attack, beating both LA Star #1 and LA Star #2 into the canvas.

Rating: 42

Fresh from their title reign in IPW come medium-term loanees Boneyard and BB Colossus. They come with a reputation and a look which should win over our fans from the get go. And they breathe life into our flagging tag team division.

SINGLES MATCH: Cameron Copeland vs. Davis Wayne Newton

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Davis Wayne Newton defeated Cameron Copeland in 11:56 by pinfall with a Triple Threat DDT.

Rating: 38

DWN continues his path of destruction as a debutant in MPW. Copeland is a talent we should work hard to find something to do with, but frankly we only had limited time on the show to build up a lot of stories without burning out our fans. But he’d get there eventually.

ANGLE: Scout and James Diaz are in the ring awaiting their opponents. Guide comes out and introduces us to his new friend Private Curt Meritt. All the way to the ring a very wary looking Meritt keeps one eye forward and one on his partner. Guide meanwhile spends the whole time trying to get Scout’s attention to point out that ‘Curt looks just like Jimmy, don’t you think. You remember Jimmy, from Afghanistan.’

Rating: 56

TAG TEAM MATCH: Scout & Diaz vs. Guide & Meritt

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Guide and Curt Meritt defeated Scout and James Diaz in 10:09 when Curt Meritt pinned Scout, illegally using the ropes for leverage.

Rating: 66

Boom! Great main event as Curt was presented with a single shot at the main event and grasped it with both hands. Fantastic match between these four and Meritt is no embroiled in the Scout/Guide story for the time being.

BRAWL FOR IT ALL BATTLE ROYAL: Charlie Corner, Danny Cassidy, Drake Constantine, Dreadnought, Edouard LeMieux, Pepper Pelton, Phil Anders, Prime Time Jack Pryde, William Jetterson & Zippy Deverell

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Prime Time Jack Pryde won a battle royal in 28:20. The other members of the 'final four' were Dreadnought, Phil Anders and Charlie Corner, with Dreadnought being the final elimination. Dreadnought got the most eliminations over the course of the match.

Rating: 56

And so it begins. This is going to be fun.

OVERALL RATING: 57

Everyone stayed behind after the show to watch the Billy fight together. I overheard Prime Time criticising the choice of Grandmaster Phunk as winner of the King of New York battle royal and how is wasn’t a patch on the one we’d just had. It was also a good opportunity to let the new guys mingle. Broadly they were a nice bunch, with DWN specifically getting stuck in and making friends. Boneyard was a bit of a loner, but he didn’t bring down the mood, so that’s a start. I wasn’t really sure how long they’d stay, but for the time being they had a compelling story to tell. At the end of the night Billy was victorious once again and he called us up to talk on the phone and the cheer he got was nearly deafening. Even months away from action, he was as popular as always. Now that’s the bond of teamwork. Somewhere deep down the Other Wolf growled its displeasure and went back to sleep.

MPW POWER HOUR #51

Wednesday, Week 3, April, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 253

SINGLES MATCH: LaDarrell Mills vs. The Masked Mauler

In a terrible match, The Masked Mauler defeated LaDarrell Mills in 9:59 by submission with an Iron Claw after blatantly cheating.

Rating: 35

Revenge for The Masked Mauler as we didn’t want to just bury the guy, especially as he was now the protégé of Scout. LaDarrell looks very smooth at selling, which would serve him well if can grow into his charisma and improve his mic skills too.

SINGLES MATCH: Roger Monteiro vs. David Wayne Newton

In a decent match, Davis Wayne Newton defeated Roger Monteiro in 10:28 by pinfall with a Triple Threat DDT.

Rating: 46

DWN takes on another MPW original and makes relatively short work of him. Roger is a steady hand for us and his relentless optimism and loyalty to the boys was admirable.

ANGLE: Danny Cassidy is in the Power Zone. He’s getting pretty bored of Zippy and his constant attention. We wonders if Zip the Lip isn’t more than a little enamoured with the Texan lifestyle. HE supposes growing up on a farm and drinking beer from a glass jar might have made him wish for something more. Regardless of his jealousy, he Danny Cassidy has already moved on. Zippy should too.

Rating: 63

Slightly heelish interview by Danny here (reinforced by Big Smack agreeing with almost everything he said) as Zippy’s growing popularity has caused a shift in the dynamic between the two. Danny is still very much a good guy of course, just not necessarily against Zippy.

SINGLES MATCH: Charlie Corner vs. Zippy Deverell

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Charlie Corner defeated Zippy Deverell in 9:46 by pinfall with a Corner Cutter following interference from Danny Cassidy.

Rating: 51

Was this proof of Danny’s equal obsession with Zippy, or perhaps he was just helping out a stablemate? Tough to tell at this point. Either way, the crowd booed the interference.

ANGLE: New Satin Knights are out in the ring to talk about the newcomers the State Of Destruction. If all it took to be successful in here was a cheapshot run-in, they’d have done it months ago. “We hear you State of Destruction guys like to throw your weight around. Well that’s ok, we’d like to throw your weight around too!”

Rating: 45

Game on.

TAG TEAM MATCH: New Satin Knights vs. State of Destruction

In a decent match, State Of Destruction defeated New Satin Knights in 9:59 when BB Colossus pinned Drake Constantine with a Colossus Avalanche.

Rating: 50

Game over. Obviously a big win for the newcomers. But we had to sacrifice someone to get them ready for the title shot. And now they have.

ANGLE: Zippy Deverell is in the ring. He thinks its rich that Danny says he’s obsessed with him. Especially as he’s been focused on winning the Midwest Heavyweight Title. Nothing like a bit of Texan insecurity and projection. So just to make the little guy happy, he’s going to stand at ringside and watch the next match.

Rating: 69

Hah! Zippy is awesome.

SINGLES MATCH: Danny Cassidy vs. Dreadnought

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Danny Cassidy defeated Dreadnought in 9:39 by count out.

Rating: 55

Oooo, actually a massive result for Danny here as Dreadnought got distracted by the two of them fighting on the outside and didn’t want to miss out. Still a bit of a schmozz finish, but they’re always popular around these parts.

TRIBAL WARFARE MATCH: Scout, Diaz & St.Hubbins vs. Guide, Prime Time & Phil Anders

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Guide, Prime Time Jack Pryde and Phil Anders defeated Scout, James Diaz and Corey St.Hubbins in 24:58 when Phil Anders submitted Corey St.Hubbins with a Nebraska Stretcher after blatantly cheating.

Rating: 65

Fantastic match with six of our best. Plus it actually ends in a result, with Nebraska Stud Phil Anders making the Midwest champion tap out. A sign of things to come? I mean, you cannot say Phil isn’t he number 1 contender for the belt now.

OVERALL RATING: 64

Fantastic show with 54,122 viewers and as we head into the go home show, the card for Sunday Night’s Main Event is almost set. Now just to keep everything cooking.

MPW POWER HOUR #52

Wednesday, Week 4, April, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 253

TAG TEAM MATCH: Monteiro & Jetterson vs. State of Destruction

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, State Of Destruction defeated Roger Monteiro and William Jetterson in 10:24 when BB Colossus pinned William Jetterson with a Colossus Avalanche.

Rating: 39

Sometimes you need sacrificial lambs for a monster tag team. In the absence of Minnesota Awesome, you sign up Jetterson and Monteiro. Dominant win for the State of Destruction.

ANGLE: Corey St.Hubbins is in the Power Zone. He’s got to give Phil Anders some credit. That Nebraska Stretcher is a potent finishing move. It might be the best finisher in all of MPW. But one move does not, a wrestler, make. It’s all well and good getting the opportunity is a multi-man tag team match. But let’s see if he can get it in a one-on-one match. It’s a different kettle of fish and he doesn’t think Anders has what it takes.

Rating: 80

Fantastic promo from someone who can match Prime Time in terms of talent and ability. When the time was right, and Corey especially has improved his basics and psychology the two of them would light up the main event. Providing they don’t get poached first of course.

TEN-MAN TAG TEAM MATCH: The Young Stallions vs. Dreadnought, DWN, Deverell, Anders & Meritt

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Dreadnought, Davis Wayne Newton, Zippy Deverell, Phil Anders and Curt Meritt defeated Corey St.Hubbins, Charlie Corner, Danny Cassidy, Drake Constantine and Edouard LeMieux in 22:30 when Curt Meritt pinned Charlie Corner with a DDT after Charlie Corner got wiped out after a spot of partner miscommunication.

Rating: 56

It’s a schmozz with an actually ending. And it’s an ending with Curt Meritt having his hand raised. His determination to insert himself in every feud going is admirable. Something would definitely stick too. Charlie once again cost Curt the clean win here accidentally getting himself too worked up and making a mistake which cost him the match.

ANGLE: James Diaz is in the Power Zone and he congratulates Prime Time Jack Pryde on becoming number 1 contender for his title. He’s in for a rude awakening when they face each other in a few days though. He hasn’t got where he is by being weak, or being easily beaten. As Prime Time will find out.

Rating: 65

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde interrupts the interview, wearing a designer suit and shades. HE’s not sweating the little stuff, like James Diaz’s wrestling ability. He’s got it all sorted. He knows how to win and when the title is on the line, there’s no one better than him at getting the job done. No matter the cost.

Rating: 75

TAG TEAM MATCH: Scout & Diaz vs. Prime Time & Guide

In a superb match, Scout and James Diaz drew with Guide and Prime Time Jack Pryde in 29:47 following a double count out.

Rating: 65

Firstly, this match was great and everything a main event should be (barring the finish), but in one spot Prime Time was set to come off the top rope and get caught by Scout in a neckbreaker. Scout missed his timing and left Prime Time flailing in the air. Fortunately Prime Time was able to avoid injury, but boy was he hot afterwards. I can only imagine the quality of the match without that botch in it.

OVERALL RATING: 67

56,898 viewers tuned in to watch, and Prime Time’s obvious irritation with Scout helped push us to that record. Never underestimate the audience’s appetite for mistakes. That aside, with everything else set for the Sunday Night’s Main Event, we called in the relevant big talent for a pre-event chat. That’s when we heard the news.

“I’m not available on Sunday,” James said.

“What do you mean you’re not available? You just cut a promo on live TV saying that you’d be facing Prime Time at the event,” I replied.

“I thought we were taping on Saturday for Sunday showing.”

“Why would you think that?” I shouted. “Where the Hell are you going to be?”

“OLLIE.”

“Mexico!?!?!”

“Yeah, they singed it off with Sam Keith. I’m defending the built in the opener of LuchaSlam XXVIII against Silver Tiger.”

I starred at Chief, who got straight on the phone. After a couple of minutes of furious conversation, Chief turned off the call.

“It’s true,” Chief said. “And Keith said the one rule of the COTT is you honour your dates.”

“At the expense of your own business. That’s dumb! F**k em, we should keep him here anyway.”

“Erm, I don’t think that’s right,” James said. “It’s my name you’d be dragging through the mud.”

“But Chief,” I pleaded. “They’re always trying to screw us over.”

“We’ll get through it,” Chief said firmly. “We’re a team, even when one of the team isn’t being fair. You should speak to Prime Time too.”

Dammit, he was right. This was such bullsh*t. After showing everyone else out, I called in Prime Time and explained. Prime Time to his credit understood that these things happen. He was professional and upbeat throughout. I played with the note Whistler had given me when he’d left the business and looked into the piercing blue eyes of Prime Time.

“I’ll fix it, I promise.”

“I know you will boss man,” he replied. “I trust you like I trust my own brother.”

“You’ve got a brother?” I asked. “Can he wrestle?”

Prime Time laughed, “No sir he cannot. But I’ll tell him you asked. He’ll be flattered. So you on Sunday night, stick me in against anyone. I’ll make a match out of it.”

MPW Sunday Night’s Main Event

Sunday, Week 4, April, 2023

Live from Wabasha Street Caves [Downtown, St. Paul, Minnesota]

Attendance: 798

SINGLES MATCH: LaDarrell Mills vs. The Masked Mauler

In a terrible match, LaDarrell Mills defeated The Masked Mauler in 9:36 by pinfall.

Rating: 37

Rookie takes the rubber match in a decent outing for both guys. Mauler is a pro at all times.

SINGLES MATCH: Danny Cassidy vs. Pepper Pelton

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Pepper Pelton defeated Danny Cassidy in 9:34 by pinfall with a Fisherman's Suplex.

Rating: 49

Bit of an upset here as both members of the Young Stallions decided to test each other and Pepper gets the win. Danny looked good in defeat and afterwards both men shake hands in appreciation of one another.

TRIBAL WARFARE MATCH: The Young Stallions vs. Curt Meritt, Davis Wayne Newton & Zippy Deverell

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Zippy Deverell, Curt Meritt and Davis Wayne Newton defeated The Young Stallions (Charlie Corner, Edouard LeMieux and Drake Constantine) in 9:55 when Davis Wayne Newton pinned Drake Constantine with a Triple Threat DDT after Charlie distracted his own partner.

Rating: 52

Oof, Charlie’s ADHD strikes again. He’s lucky he’s such a loveable dude though, otherwise his teammates might get a bit miffed. He’s a good scapegoat for a booker to have when he needs the heroes to lose I should add.

MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: State of Destruction vs. The LA Stars ©

In a decent match, State Of Destruction defeated The LA Stars in 10:14 when LA Star #2 was disqualified while fighting BB Colossus.

Rating: 54

The unstoppable monsters are not… stopped. In a good match which keep the story going, builds their momentum and allows us to run through more matches until more options for the tag team division can be found.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Phil Anders vs. Corey St.Hubbins ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Corey St.Hubbins defeated Phil Anders in 20:36 by pinfall with a Switchblade Powerslam. Corey St.Hubbins makes defence number five of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 45

Turns out Phil Anders wasn’t so effective in one-on-one action against St.Hubbins. The Switchblade Powerslam is an ‘out of nowhere’ finisher too, so while Anders dominated the match, he fell to one of the most effective impact finishers we had.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is in the ring and has a microphone. “Ladies and Gentlemen, your hero Prime Time was due to face James Diaz for the COTT World Title. HE has opted to run away and fight some masked guy in Mexico. All I can draw from this is; he’s a coward. A big Coward, but a coward for sure. But that’s fine, Prime Time’s time will come. Like the oceans, the mountains and the sun, Prime Time is, Inevitable. Now send out someone for him to beat. Lacrimosa hits and HERE COMES THE MAN MONSTER… Dreadnought. Prime Time looks deflated momentarily, then tightens is taped wrists, draws an imaginary line in the ring and demands the monster face him.

Rating: 77

Is this really a suitable replacement for Prime Time? Regardless, the summons to the Man Monster was one of the most badass visuals we’ve ever done. Prime Time gives zero f**ks.

SINGLES MATCH: Dreadnought vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde

In a good match, Prime Time Jack Pryde drew with Dreadnought in 30.00 following a time limit stoppage.

Rating: 57

The answer is, YES, this is a suitable replacement for Prime Time. Not only did he not lose against the Man Monster (again), he took him to the limit in a great match. These two are fantastic together and while he wasn’t the first man to pin the behemoth, he came out this looking like the biggest star in the world.

MPW CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Guide vs. Scout ©

In an exceptional match, Guide drew with Scout in 30:09 when the referee lost control and stopped the match.

Rating: 68

Another fantastic match between these two as Guide appears completely disinterested in actually winning the title and is more about teaching Scout a lesson. Either way, the feud continues.

OVERALL RATING: 67

57,261 viewers for that one, which was better than we expected after pulling a scheduled match at the last minute.

Welcome to Minnesota Pro Wrestling… Prime Time gets his shot and a legend descends on us…

To say that we were furious about OLLIE’s last minute snagging of our main event was an understatement. It wasn’t James’ fault at all, he was just being put into an impossible position. I opted to leave the call to Chief as I has too steamed about the situation. When he’d finished, he explained Phoenix I had seemed completely disinterested in our concerns. The show they were running was the biggest of the year, so of course they wanted the COTT World Champion on the show. Apparently if we had a problem, he should take it up with Keith, he’s the one who signed it off. As my blood boiled further, Chief spoke in his normal calming tones. This was the price for business. We were in an alliance with companies which were older, bigger and more prestigious. He warned me against retaliation too. We had to keep our heads while those around us lost theirs.

MPW POWER HOUR #53

Wednesday, Week 1, May, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 272

ANGLE: A beaten and bandaged Scout is out and he wants Guide to know that as far as he’s concerned, it’s over. Last night they beat each other within an inch of their lives and he’s sure that whatever issues Guide has with their past must be settled now. With that in mind, he needs a match to loosen the aches and pains, so anyone who fancies a shot, get out here.

Rating: 70

Obviously there’s no way the feud is over, but Scout isn’t getting any younger, so he needs some time to rest.

MPW CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE MATCH: Zippy Deverell vs. Scout ©

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Scout defeated Zippy Deverell in 10:12 by submission with a Texas Cloverleaf. Scout makes defence number nine of the MPW Championship.

Rating: 51

Good match by Zippy as he was forced to protect the champion a bit as his injuries are catching up to him. I cannot believe the speed of the physical collapse of our champion. On the plus side, he hadn’t announced his retirement yet and despite his advancing years, the matches were still good.

ANGLE: Corey St.Hubbins is in the Power Zone before his match. Tonight is the night that all the champions are defending their titles (there’s a 30-day clause after all) and he’s up against Curt Meritt. Curt Meritt who is apparently a wrestling now, not just a coffee-fetcher for the Powers That Be. That’s cool, St.Hubbins is an equal opportunity ass-kicker. So let’s see what the little man can bring.

Rating: 84

Lord above, what a promo. I daren’t say this, but St.Hubbins might just be better on the mic than Prime Time, which is not something I had really expected. Being an interviewer and colour commentator for almost a year has obviously helped him out. What a star.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Curt Meritt vs. Corey St.Hubbins ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Corey St.Hubbins defeated Curt Meritt in 20:43 by pinfall with a Switchblade Powerslam after Charlie Corner interfered. Corey St.Hubbins makes defence number six of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 53

It’s an interference from Cali Cool that actually paid off. His firecracker energy being used for the good of the Young Stallions. Curt gave a great account of himself.

ANGLE: The LA Stars admit they had an off-day over the weekend. It’s cool, they’re not used to dealing with so much weight in the ring. But like the eternal champions they are, they’ve adapted and tonight; State of Destruction, prepare to get the beating of a lifetime.

Rating: 44

These two are far more old school on the mic than the creative and explosive St.Hubbins or Prime Time. But they do a good job in selling their particular matches. Which was enough for me.

MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: State of Destruction vs. The LA Stars ©

In a decent match, The LA Stars defeated State Of Destruction in 20:08 when LA Star #2 pinned Boneyard with a Star Destroyer. The LA Stars make defence number ten of the MPW Tag Team.

Rating: 59

Clean win in a good match. State of Destruction were never long-term answers in the tag team division. Visually they’re a great team, but they don’t have the in-ring talent that our regular wrestlers normally have. That’s why we only signed them on short-term contracts. We’re learning.

ANGLE: James Diaz doesn’t need to apologise to anyone. He’s the World Champion and it’s his job to win matches all over the world. It’s one of the reasons Prime Time Jack Pryde would be terrible as champion. He can’t just sit in his momma’s basement playing video games all day. He’s actually got to go out and do stuff. But hey, he’s got himself a shot at the Champ tonight. He better not miss though, who knows when the next chance will present itself.

Rating: 65

Good promo as we are really blurring the lines between face and heel at the top of the card. Eventually we’d course-correct, but going through a period of transition was always tricky.

COTT WORLD TITLE MATCH: Prime Time Jack Pryde vs. James Diaz ©

In a superb match, James Diaz defeated Prime Time Jack Pryde in 25:04 by pinfall with an Asian Thumb Spike. James Diaz makes defence number five of the COTT World Heavyweight title.

Rating: 66

Great match as Prime Time falls short again. At this point he’s got to be wondering (and the audience too) if he’d ever get the Big Win. This was another example of the reversal of face/heel divide we had going on. The Prime Time story was very obviously the Face Story, but he was undoubtedly a Heel. Blurred Lines!

OVERALL RATING: 69

A top-quality show for us which drew 59,565 viewers. After the show, I sat down with Curt and the Chief. We’d been planning to get round to this for a while now, but I wanted to do it in person. I thanked Curt for all of his work and highlighted how reliant I was on him. But, that shouldn’t take away from his dreams of being a wrestler. As such, he was, with immediate effect, removed from his post as my assistant. His salary would be doubled to $420 per show and he was, officially, one of the boys. The Chief shook his hand and he genuinely looked overwhelmed by it all. I showed him the door in a jokey way and he wandered out to the locker room with the rest of the wrestlers.

“We’re going to miss him,” I said.

“Don’t worry,” the Chief replied. “We’ll find a suitable replacement. In the mean time; I’ve spoken to Sean and he’s flying down for the next show.”

“I can’t believe he got him.”

“Well, don’t be too excited, remember he’s a veteran at this stage.”

“I know,” I lied. How could I not be excited about signing one of my favourite all-time wrestlers growing up?

MPW POWER HOUR #54

Wednesday, Week 2, May, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 278

ANGLE: Corey St.Hubbins is out (accompanied by Charlie Corner), and he wants to chat about one Mr. Curt Meritt. He doesn’t like how the little twerp behaves, but he does respect his heart. He’s not sure if he’d be so passionate about a job he was so ill-equipped to do. But fair play, we all get lucky sometime. He knows Curt isn’t that popular backstage, so hopefully he has found a partner for tonight.

Rating: 87

It’s like listening to a voice made of rich, creamery butter.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Corner & St.Hubbins vs. Meritt & Dreadnought

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Charlie Corner and Corey St.Hubbins drew with Curt Meritt and Dreadnought in 21:34 following a double count out.

Rating: 55

Turns out Curt does have a friend. A big friend. A big friend with little else to do than cause pain. These two makeshift teams had a massive brawl which spilled out into the crowd. Good match as Curt basically creates his own story simply by being in the ring.

ANGLE: Davis Wayne Newton is welcomed to the Power Zone and Big Smack Scott had been impressed with his start. “Yeah, I’m pretty awesome,” DWN replied. He goes on to say that he’s facing someone called The Perfect One Pepper Pelton. His name is obviously a lie. Because if he was The Perfect One, he’d be DWN. And he’s not. Big Smack reminds DWN that he’s fought Pepper before, but Newton acts mildly surprised and shrugs his shoudlers.

Rating: 53

No doubting that DWN is a heel after this. Having followed his career and been surprised by his lack of mainstream success, I had sort of committed myself to helping him prove his worth to the world.

SINGLES MATCH: Pepper Pelton vs. David Wayne Newton

In a decent match, Davis Wayne Newton defeated Pepper Pelton in 9:41 by submission with a STF after blatantly cheating.

Rating: 49

He lies, he cheats and he wins.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is out to applaud James Diaz on his victory. He’s pretty sure someone drugged him before the match, because he can’t think of any other reason why he’d lose. But that’s ok, you can’t mess him around and expect him to go away. When Diaz least expects it, he’ll be there to pin him and take his title. As for tonight; he doesn’t think Diaz and Scout have any more friends to ask to take on him, Nebraska Stud and Guide. He’s looking forward to a bit of revenge.

Rating: 80

TAG TEAM MATCH: New Satin Knights vs. State of Destruction

In a decent match, New Satin Knights defeated State Of Destruction in 9:38 when Drake Constantine pinned BB Colossus with a Satin Death Drop.

Rating: 52

Satin Knights get their win back as we look to job the big guys out of town. I quite liked the idea of bringing a team in, heating them up, then jobbing them away. Feels like that could work.

ANGLE: James Diaz and Scout are out before their match, with Guide, Phil Anders and Prime Time in the ring. They were disappointed at first, when they looked around for a tag team partner. Obviously everyone wanted to main event and even moreso wanted to make all the dweebs in the ring pay. But no one had the pop they were looking for. So the MPW Champ put in a call to an old friend and he was more than happy to come and get involved. Please welcome to the Power Zone… SEAN MCFLY!!!!

Rating: 76

Can’t tell you how happy I was about this one.

TRIBAL WARFARE MATCH: Scout, James Diaz & SEAN MCFLY vs. Guide, Phil Anders & Prime Time Jack Pryde

In a bout that had fantastic heat and great wrestling, Scout, Sean McFly and James Diaz defeated Guide, Phil Anders and Prime Time Jack Pryde in 29:55 when James Diaz pinned Prime Time Jack Pryde with an Asian Thumb Spike.

Rating: 69

Now that is a main event baby.

OVERALL RATING: 74

The Sean McFly news had leaked (I wonder by who) so we got our highest viewership ever with 67,353. I mean, sure Sean looked a little slower than he used to. And a little flabbier. But he was Sean McFreakingFly. A Living Legend. I wonder if he’d introduce me to Victoria Stone-McFly.

I loved my job sometimes.

Welcome to Minnesota Pro Wrestling… Prime Time Sean McFly…

After the last show, I had a sitdown chat with Prime Time Jack Pryde and Sean McFly. Prime Time, as he always was, was energetic, friendly and helpful. Sean McFly was… not. Don’t get me wrong, he wasn’t negative so much as he was disinterested. I suppose having wrestled for as long as he had, in the promotions he had sort of took the shine off the life of a wrestler. He only really showed interest when we discussed Scout, who he was a big fan of; he launched into road stories about the two of them, which frankly did not paint either of them in a good light. With the next month or so planned out, Sean left to catch-up with Scout. I was alone with Prime Time.

“You alight?”

“Of course,” Prime Time replied. “Why wouldn’t I be? I get to face a legend.”

“You happy about the result?”

“Yup,” he replied, but with hesitation.

“Really? Because I’m not so sure…”

***

The night of the next taping, I was looking through the first pack prepared for me by my latest assistant. He’d scrawled on the front, ‘Courtesy of the Ragin’ Cajun Scott Carvill. It took all my self-control not to run out and drag Curt in to take his old job back. The notes themselves were fine. CZCW were on a roll and had just run their annual Welcome to the Coastal Zone with a main event of American Flash beating Marc ‘Speedball’ Speed and claiming the Coastal Zone Title. It was a Hell of a match too by all accounts. With an hour till the start of the taping, I called in Dreadnought for a chat.

MPW POWER HOUR #55

Wednesday, Week 3, May, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 279

SINGLES MATCH: Pepper Pelton vs. Zippy Deverell

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Zippy Deverell defeated Pepper Pelton in 19:36 by pinfall after using a horseshoe.

Rating: 42

Why did Zippy have a horseshoe you might ask, because he’d come to the ring dressed as cowboy in a mocking (or homage) to Danny Cassidy. As such, he obviously cheated to win, because Texans are cheaters. It wasn’t a subtle dig.

ANGLE: Zippy Deverell grabs a microphone after the match and criticises Pepper Pelton in a thick, ridiculing accent which bore more than a passing resemblance to Cassidy’s Texas drawl.

Rating: 67

He’s not making it easy on me keeping him heel. The reactions of the crowd were growing steadily positive.

TAG TEAM MATCH: The Manifesto vs. State of Destruction

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, The Manifesto defeated State Of Destruction in 9:52 when Jamar Lennon pinned BB Colossus with a Hail Mary.

Rating: 42

The new team get themselves a big win and look like absolute killers in the process. Bobby Marks is absolutely the talent of this team it has to be said.

ANGLE: Corey St.Hubbins is out and he’s got no-one to face tonight. So he’s issuing an open challenge to anyone, from anywhere to come give him a match. The theme to Baseball plays and here comes NYCW Empire Champion; Oliver Kobb.

Rating: 81

Bring in the new faces. And ignore the fact that the new faces are all so old and wrinkly. Jesus Christ!

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Oliver Kobb vs. Corey St.Hubbins

In a superb match, Corey St.Hubbins defeated Oliver Kobb in 5:53 by pinfall by using underhanded tactics. Corey St.Hubbins makes defence number seven of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 57

A much shorter match than expected because Chief informed me that Kobb cannot go for much longer due to his health, age and stamina. At this point I wonder why he’s still wrestling. Surely he’d be more at home in a home.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is in the Power Zone. Last week caught him by surprise. He’s man enough to admit it. But now he knows Sean Freakin McFly is in MPW, he’s reassessed. So it’s out with the Guide and in with… the Man Monster. Let’s see how the whining crybabies like him now.

Rating: 73

TRIBAL WARFARE MATCH: Scout, James Diaz & Sean McFly vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde, Phil Anders & Drednought

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Prime Time Jack Pryde, Phil Anders and Dreadnought defeated Scout, James Diaz and Sean McFly in 20:28 when Prime Time Jack Pryde pinned Scout, illegally using the ropes for leverage.

Rating: 68

Did he cheat? You betcha. But the important thing is Prime Time pinned the champion. That if nothing else implants in the minds of the audience that it’s possible.

ANGLE: The LA Stars have an interview and they’ll happily face anyone for the titles. The fact that it’s the unusual team of Guide and Meritt is irrelevant. The LA Stars are the guardians of the tag team titles and they’ll defend them against all comers.

Rating: 47

NO.1 CONTENDERS TAG TEAM MATCH: New Satin Knights vs. Guide & Curt Meritt

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Guide and Curt Meritt defeated New Satin Knights in 22:07 when Curt Meritt pinned Drake Constantine while using the ropes for leverage.

Rating: 57

Decent main event as we continue to elevate the team of Guide and Meritt. It’s interesting that Guide seems so disinterested in matches when Scout isn’t around. I wondered if he was a bit lazy, but apparently it’s genius character work. Long story short; Guide is a bit weird.

OVERALL RATING: 63

We got a healthy 57,408 viewers for that one. And at the end of the show thanked State of Destruction for their work and wished them well. Turns out once you’ve fired of released one person, the ones after that are much easier. I had a catch-up with Chief in the office and was surprised at how tired he looked. When I pressed him, he explained that since expanding the time of our TV Show and events, he’s been exhausted by the sheer amount of road agent work he has to put in. He didn’t leave SWF to end up working longer hours. It was fine when we had Whistler, but since then he’d been working solo. So we talked through hiring some support for him. And one name immediately came to mind. Apparently over in NYCW, the Italian Heartthrob Brutus Milano had gone absolutely berserk at their road agent Steve Flash. So it made sense for us to offer him a contract and show him some love. We never liked Brutus, he was just a pretty face and a lucky gimmick. Plus any chance to slyly take a dig at Larry Vessey was always worth doing.

MPW POWER HOUR #56

Wednesday, Week 4, May, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 278

SINGLES MATCH: Roger Monteiro vs. Zippy Deverell

In a decent match, Roger Monteiro defeated Zippy Deverell in 20:10 by pinfall with an Eagle Chop.

Rating: 49

Well, well, well, what’s this then. Zippy loses, clean, to the forgotten man on MPW? That’s right. We’d chatted with Roger before the show and he’d highlighted that his momentum was in the toilet. Zippy, a good friend of his had offered to help. So we went for it.

ANGLE: New Satin Knights are buoyed by their win against State of Destruction and they’re ready to take on the winner of the LA Stars vs. Meritt & Guide match at Tribal Warfare. The LA Stars interrupt and say if they want a shot, they can have it now. Then The Manifesto come out and say they beat State of Destruction too and LA Stars are happy to take them both on.

Rating: 50

Simple setup really.

MPW TAG TEAM MATCH: The Manifesto vs. New Satin Knights vs. The LA Stars ©

In a decent match, The LA Stars defeated New Satin Knights and The Manifesto in 22:24; the order of elimination was The Manifesto first, and then New Satin Knights. The LA Stars make defence number eleven of the MPW Tag Team.

Rating: 54

There can be no doubting LA Stars as the premiere team in MPW at this stage. They’ve exceeded the lofty expectations placed on them by the inaugural winners The Ring Generals.

ANGLE: James Diaz is out with the COTT World Title. He sees Prime Time Jack Pryde is whinging again. Typical millennial, always wants everything handed to them. Well not in Minnesota baby. If we wants a shot, first he’s going to have to prove he’s ready. First, he’s got to win a one-on-one match with… oh I don’t know… Sean McFly?

Rating: 61

James’ tormenting of Prime Time is quite funny really.

MPW MIDWEST TITLE MATCH: Oliver Cobb vs. Corey St.Hubbins ©

In a superb match, Corey St.Hubbins defeated Oliver Kobb in 6:09 by pinfall with a Switchblade Powerslam. Corey St.Hubbins makes defence number eight of the MPW Midwest Heavyweight.

Rating: 52

Match number two between these guys as we aim to slowly and brutally tank the popularity of NYCW’s top star. We just hoped Chief was too tired to notice. This may have been Other Wolf behaviour, but we were still angry with COTT for farming out Diaz to OLLIE.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde fears no man. Sean McFly, drag your sorry, old ass out here and prepare for the PrydeFall.

Rating: 79

Them’s fighting words.

SINGLES MATCH: Sean McFly vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde

In an exceptional match, Prime Time Jack Pryde defeated Sean McFly in 9:33 by pinfall with a PrydeFall.

Rating: 75

Best match ever? Sean, to his credit made Prime Time look like a megastar here. Probably because he thought he was going to win. His face after the quick count by David Poker after the bell had rung was a picture.

OVERALL RATING: 75

Sean burst backstage and yelled for me in the locker room.

Next time on Minnesota Pro Wrestling… Woops…

Welcome to Minnesota Pro Wrestling… An angry legend stalks the halls…

“GET YOUR ASS OUT HERE!” Sean McFly yelled.

I’d been around wrestlers long enough to know the etiquette. So walk out I did. He immediately got in my face; nose-to-nose. Dreadnought, as instructed before the show, stepped to my side. For a moment, Sean balked.

“I appreciate you’re angry,” I said calmly. “But we’re not about to job out one of our rising stars to an aging superstar. With all due respect, you’re too old to be squashing the younger generation.”

Laying in my hospital bed, I read the Ragin’ Cajun’s Pack, which he’d kindly dropped off. We’d got 66,180 viewers based on Sean McFly’s main event appearance. And all of them had watched Prime Time beat him. Elsewhere in the wrestling world, Edd Stone had won the TCW World Heavyweight Title from Matt Hocking, who had promptly jumped ship and joined CWA.

“What are you going to do about McFly?” said the soft voice of Scott Carvill.

I nearly jumped out of my bed. The sudden movement made my eye hurt again. Sean really had clobbered me good and proper.

“Chief is calming him down and explaining our point in a less confrontational way. And if that doesn’t work, we’ll throw money at him.”

“Will that work?”

“Money normally does.”

MPW POWER HOUR #57

Wednesday, Week 1, June, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 288

ANGLE: James Diaz has noticed the NYCW Empire Champion walking around and frankly he’s shocked the little old man hasn’t asked for a shot at the COTT World Title. So instead, James is going to challenge him for a Match to decide who the best champion is.

Rating: 68

Fun little promo from James here, although I’m sure anyone with a passing knowledge of how we treat outsiders knows where this is leading.

SINGLES MATCH: James Diaz vs. Oliver Cobb

In a superb match, James Diaz defeated Oliver Kobb in 6:19 by pinfall with an Asian Thumb Spike.

Rating: 58

Squish goes the squashed. Quite how NYCW have run with this guy as their top champion for so long is beyond me. He has no stamina, no strength and looks like a guy off the street.

ANGLE: Zippy Deverell is out dressed as Danny Cassidy again. Tonight he’s found himself a partner called the Masked Minnesotan. And they’re about to teach some Texas Justice to some Irish fellas called Corner and Cassidy.

Rating: 63

It’s the snarky gimmick which just keeps giving. It’s also now probably the longest-running feud in our short history as a company.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Corner & Cassidy vs. Meritt & Deverell

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, Charlie Corner and Danny Cassidy drew with Masked Minnesotan and Zippy Deverell in 20:35 when the referee lost control and stopped the match.

Rating: 53

For those wondering, the Masked Minnesotan is a generic gimmick given to any wrestler on any given night when we needed someone to fill in the gaps in our roster. Tonight it was Curt Meritt.

ANGLE: Guide is out with a very sweaty and out of breath Curt Meritt. Tonight is stage one of Operation: Save Scout. He’s about to beat Scout and extract the title from him. He’ll then have it destroyed. Step 2 is… and then step 3… success.

“Isn’t that right Jimmy?”

“I told you, I’m Curt.”

“Classic Jimmy, always the joker.”

Rating: 76

You can’t say the unhunged army veteran gimmick isn’t funny at the very least. Curt is dynamite as a straight man playing off the crazy too.

MPW CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE MATCH: Guide vs. Scout ©

In an exceptional match, Scout defeated Guide in 22:10 by submission with a Texas Cloverleaf. Scout makes defence number ten of the MPW Championship.

Rating: 68

So interestingly both Guide and Scout were visibly tiring towards the end, despite us telling them to keep it slow and dramatic. This was… concerning. Was everyone catching McFly’s Old Personness or something?

ANGLE: Sean McFly is out and he’s got some words for Prime Time Jack Pryde. Firstly, his name is stupid. Secondly, in his day (OLD MAN!) respect was earnt in the ring of combat. You didn’t just get a quick count and steal victories to get over. That is embarrassing behaviour, which is absolutely in-keeping with this new generation… Prime Time’s music hits to interrupt the ‘Old Man Yells at Clouds’ moment.

Rating: 62

Actually a decent little promo to be fair, and McFly was obviously happy with the Chief’s payout. And we’d make sure to get our money’s worth.

SINGLES MATCH: Sean McFly vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde

In an exceptional match, Prime Time Jack Pryde defeated Sean McFly in 19:46 by pinfall with a PrydeFall.

Rating: 67

Despite McFly looking gassed after minute 6; as per his instructions, we presented a long, old school match. Prime Time did everything he could to make the aging star look competent and in exchange, he earned his clean victory.

OVERALL RATING: 69

Great show and despite Sean McFly’s pure seething rage backstage, he’d put on a show. A show which got 61,602 viewers, which was nice. His contract was short in fairness, so we just had to get through to Tribal Warfare and we could straighten the ship further.

MPW POWER HOUR #58

Wednesday, Week 2, June, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 282

TAG TEAM MATCH: New Satin Knights vs. The Manifesto

In a decent match, New Satin Knights defeated The Manifesto in 10:22 when Drake Constantine pinned Bobby Marks with a Satin Death Drop.

Rating: 44

The New Satin Knights get a needed win, the Manifesto look good in defeat. It’s good stuff.

ANGLE: James Diaz is in the Power Zone and he’s got another match against Kobb tonight. But that doesn’t concern him, what he wants to talk about is the number 1 contenders match tonight for the Midwest Title. Battle Royal’s are always a tricky prospect, so good luck to everyone involved and he looks forward to seeing the winner at Tribal Warfare after he’s finished destroying Prime Time… unless he’s busy that night… he grins mischievously.

Rating: 71

Good promo and far more on the face side of spectrum. The little joke at the end was a nice touch for the smart fans.

SINGLES MATCH: Oliver Kobb vs. James Diaz

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, James Diaz defeated Oliver Kobb in 5:48 by pinfall with an Asian Thumb Spike.

Rating: 51

Somebody call the EMTs to declare Kobb’s career dead on arrival.

NO. 1 CONTENDER MIDWEST BATTLE ROYAL: Cameron Copeland, Charlie Corner, Curt Meritt, Danny Cassidy, Davis Wayne Newton, Pepper Pelton, Phil Anders, Roger Monteiro, William Jetterson and Zippy Deverell

In a decent match, Davis Wayne Newton won a battle royal in 22:23. The other members of the 'final four' were Cameron Copeland, Phil Anders and Curt Meritt, with Cameron Copeland being the final elimination. Phil Anders got the most eliminations over the course of the match.

Rating: 53

Crowd totally bought into the chance of Copeland winning the match, which great news for the Big Shot winner. But tonight is DWN’s night. Since arriving he’s grown in popularity and confidence after each match and now he gets to try his luck against the Minnesota Kid Corey St.Hubbins.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is out and he’s ready for a final match with Sean McFly. The old geezer has put his career on the line and Prime Time could not resist sending a legend to the old folks home. So he suggests McFly puts his zimmer frame down, crawls to the ring and gets prepared for life on a farm upstate.

Rating: 67

Good stuff from Prime Time.

SINGLES MATCH: Sean McFly vs. Prime Time Jack Pryde

In an exceptional match, Prime Time Jack Pryde defeated Sean McFly in 9:41 by pinfall with a PrydeFall.

Rating: 61

And the great trilogy of matches ends in a whimper rather than a bang, but really we didn’t expect anything less. The combination of McFly’s saggy body and slow moveset combined with him having stood no chance against Prime Time in any of the other matches made him basically useless at this stage.

OVERALL RATING: 68

With two more shows to go till Tribal Warfare, things were falling into place. What could possibly go wrong now. Well, in the world of wrestling, two weeks is a long time.

Welcome to Minnesota Pro Wrestling… Where Sean McFly’s life can only get worse…

Turns out moments after the final loss to Prime Time, Sean McFly’s marriage to Victoria Stone-McFly ended. The two are divorced and the legend is in bits. It truly was a sad end to a great career, and we told him so, as we showed him out the door and slowly shut it behind him. The bad news continued for the best and brightest of pro wrestling as former USPW World Champion Rich Money, who’d just signed an enormous, multi-year contract suffered a herniated disc and was out for a year. Terrible news for him, but not for USPW who had approximately fifty quality wrestlers to take his place. From our POV we were now regularly drawing 60k viewers per week as those who tuned in to see McFly had stayed. Which was nice.

MPW POWER HOUR #59

Wednesday, Week 3, June, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 282

EIGHT-MAN TAG MATCH: The Young Stallions vs. Main Street Hustlers & The Manifesto

In a decent match, The Young Stallions (Charlie Corner, Corey St.Hubbins, Drake Constantine and Edouard LeMieux) defeated Main Street Hustlers and The Manifesto in 10:08 when Edouard LeMieux submitted Samson Gillis with a Stone Ankle Stretch.

Rating: 52

Everyone knows what these go-home shows are like by now. Just a series of ridiculous multi-man tag team matches to keep everyone heated before the big show. Nice to see The Young Stallions all on the same page and without Cali Cool messing it up.

ANGLE: The LA Stars have an interview in which they taunt Guide and Meritt ahead of their big title showdown at Tribal Warfare. As for tonight, they’re feeling in a fun mood. They’ve been asked to pick their opponents and they’ve chosen Danny Cassidy and Zippy Deverell. What could possibly go wrong?

Rating: 56

Hey, that’s my line.

MPW TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: Deverell & Cassidy vs. The LA Stars ©

In a bout that had good heat and decent wrestling, The LA Stars defeated Danny Cassidy and Zippy Deverell in 21:57 when LA Star #2 pinned Zippy Deverell with a Star Destroyer. The LA Stars make defence number twelve of the MPW Tag Team.

Rating: 40

Goddammit. LA Star #1 had his jaw broken by a stiff punch from Danny. God it looked horrific too. I mean, horrific in a good way, but still.

ANGLE: Davis Wayne Newton is in the Power Zone. He’s a man of few words (hahahahahahaha), so all he’ll say is; Corey St.Hubbins, it’s time to feel the triple threat.

Rating: 62

SINGLES MATCH: Oliver Kobb vs. Davis Wayne Newton

In a good match, Davis Wayne Newton defeated Oliver Kobb in 6:18 by submission with a STF.

Rating: 51

Turned out Kobb had one more match left under contract, so a burial by our midcard challenger felt in order.

ANGLE: Guide has an interview in which he taunts Scout. He’s ready to win the tag team belts this weekend. Because he knows who he is. Unlike Scout, who is slowly breaking under the weight of a singles title. Is he sure this is how he wants to live his life? He can’t be happy, constantly lying about who he is.

Rating: 83

Oddly heartfelt promo by Guide, which sort of makes it creepier in a way.

TAG TEAM MATCH: Scout & James Diaz vs. Guide & Curt Meritt

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Scout and James Diaz defeated Guide and Curt Meritt in 22:30 when James Diaz pinned Curt Meritt with an Asian Thumb Spike following botched interference by Prime Time Jack Pryde.

Rating: 63

Oh Prime Time; that’s not how you do that.

MPW POWER HOUR #60

Wednesday, Week 3, June, 2023

Live from The Paul Bunyan Hall [bemidji, Beltrami County, Minnesota]

Attendance: 279

TAG TEAM MATCH: Cameron Copeland & William Jetterson vs. Main Street Hustlers

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Main Street Hustlers defeated Cameron Copeland and William Jetterson in 10:10 when Spike pinned Cameron Copeland with a Roll of the Dice.

Rating: 44

Time to ressuect the tag team division properly. We couldn’t just rely on outsiders anymore. We needed teams. Proper teams. Dangerous teams.

ANGLE: Prime Time Jack Pryde is in the Power Zone. This weekend he fulfils his destiny. James Diaz has made it tough, but he doesn’t care. This weekend everything changes.

Rating: 68

Short and to the point. Prime Time knows exactly how to play a promo in every circumstance.

TEN-MAN TAG MATCH: The Young Stallions vs. Deverell, Anders, Manifesto and Mauler

In a decent match, Charlie Corner, Danny Cassidy, Edouard LeMieux, Drake Constantine and Pepper Pelton drew with Zippy Deverell, Phil Anders, Bobby Marks, Jamar Lennon and The Masked Mauler in 22:08 following a double count out.

Rating: 51

SCHMOZZ!

TEN-MAN TAG MATCH: Scout, Diaz, LA Stars & St.Hubbins vs. Guide, Prime Time, Dreadnoought, Meritt & DWN

In a bout that had great heat and good wrestling, Scout, James Diaz, LA Star #1, LA Star #2 and Corey St.Hubbins drew with Guide, Prime Time Jack Pryde, Dreadnought, Curt Meritt and Davis Wayne Newton in 27:51 following a double disqualification.

Rating: 60

Another schmozz.

OVERALL RATING: 63

And with that we were ready. We sat backstage together, all of us, after the taping. We were talking about the year so far. Who was doing what and how everyone felt. Prime Time was especially animated, talking about the title match. That’s when James interrupted.

“What title match?” he said.

“The one of the COTT World Title,” I interjected, but even by his tone, my stomach instinctively dropped.

“But I’m defending it in Mexico this weekend…” he said. “I thought you guys knew this time. That’s why I mentioned maybe not being around in my promo a few weeks ago.”

“I thought that was a joke!” I exclaimed.

“Why would you think it was a joke?”

“Because I laughed at how ridiculous it was!!!!”

Crap.

I really like this card (apart from the lack of Diaz, obviously). A lot of opportunity for an upset win, which makes this prediction tricky.

-I know they're champions, but this could be a huge upset

-Clean or cheap, chemistry willing this could be a feud that helps both men

Tribal Warfare: The Young Stallions (Danny Cassidy & New Satin Knights) vs. Zippy Deverell, Phil Anders & The Masked Minnesotan

-I know, crazy giving a team featuring MM the victory, until you consider who MM probably is...
