Emmett14 Posted July 22, 2021 Share Posted July 22, 2021 It's 1966. When Menno Morgano was a child, he dreamed of becoming the all-time-leader in something. It could be points, assists, rebounds, three pointers, whatever it was, Menno wanted to see his name at the top of a list. It was the ultimate goal. It showed you had ability and it showed you had longevity, and what could be more impressive than saying I did more of something than any other person. Two years as a backup guard and two years as a starter averaging 10-12 points a game at the University of Seattle had taught him pretty quickly that he wasn't likely going to be all the time leader in anything. A torn ACL and MCL while in training camp in Europe with a Finnish basketball team meant he wasn't going to be the all time leader of anything on any other continent either. Menno's basketball career was Finnished (pun intended) and he felt very unfulfilled. For the two years after his brief professional basketball foray, Menno worked as a personal trainer for various players with professional dreams as well as attended and participated in coaching clinics and basketball camps and spent his time networking and looking for a place to start his new career in basketball. At the age of 26, Menno was looking to catch on at a solid program somewhere and bide his time as an assistant before finding a program of his own to get his head coaching career started. But, then the University of Central Oklahoma called. And they offered him the head coaching job. Suddenly there was another record that he could reach: the all-time coaching victories record. Timothy Garza, the only man to ever reach more than 1,000 wins retired in 1942 with 1,139 of them, and he was the new target for Menno Morgano. Menno took the Central Oklahoma job, not caring that he had offers at some high major schools to be an assistant and to put himself in position of getting a head coaching job at a higher echelon school than UCO. But, every year Morgano spent as an assistant was going to be a year that he wasn't accumulating victories to climb all 1,140 feet to get to the top of the summit of Mt. Garza. It's a large school with a large enrollment even though their athletic programs have never made it to the level of Oklahoma State University, University of Oklahoma or University of Tulsa all of which of had solid basketball histories are all in power conferences currently. </p><p> </p><p> The previous head coach was John Solomon who spent 8 years in Edmond, with just one winning season to show for it in 1959-60 when the Bronchos went 16-14 (11-5), before being fired. </p><p> </p><p> UCO joined the NCAA in 1856 (the inaugural season was 1850) and was one of the earliest D-2 schools to make that transition to D-1. They joined the Southland Conference in 1871 and have been there ever since. They have made the tournament 4 times, 1906, 1928, 1929 and 1933. In their first appearance in '06, they managed an upset in the 1st round and made to a second game. </p><p> </p><p> I made Morgano (a game generated name) a level 0 (out of 15) coach which meant I had 100 points to divvy out over 4 categories (recruiting, scouting, offense, defense) and I went with 10, 5, 80, 5, with offense being the 80. So, I'm going to lean pretty hard into having an offensive identity with my ballclubs, which is not something I'm use to in this game. </p><p> </p><p> I received four offers for my first job, Central Oklahoma and then three MEAC schools, Savannah State, Florida A&M and South Carolina State. Florida A&M was the only real contender, but I went with UCO for a couple of reasons:</p><p> </p><p> The main one was that they have a roster that really fits my offensive coaching identity, and I think I have the opportunity to be successful the first two years with the roster that I'm inheriting. The other reason is that I live in Oklahoma City and the Central Oklahoma campus is about 15 miles from my house so there is certainly a local attraction to me. </p><p> </p><p> But, like the first post said, my goal is to become the all time win leader and do it in a realistic-ish number of years. And since that is my goal, I do want to prioritize winning and not being shy about changing jobs if the change will increase my win totals quicker. Emmett14 Posted July 22, 2021 Author Share Posted July 22, 2021 <p>Two of the staff from the previous regime went and found other jobs, Louis Pollard went to Missouri Kansas City and Denny Holman went to North Carolina A&T.</p><p> </p><p> Billy Bond, 52, is staying on the staff, just like he did the last time UCO changed head coaches. Bond has been there since 1952 and will handle recruiting duties. The two new guys on staff are both brand new to the profession as well. Scout Christopher Gonzalez, 30 years old, and 28 year old Tony Datcher. Datcher is defensive minded coach who will handle most of the defensive strategy and play calling for us. They only graduated one senior, 6'8" Carl Toews who played a career high 14 minutes a game last year averaging 3.7 points and 2.9 rebounds a game. All of them eligible for the NCAA tournament, 67 of which are independent and not affiliated with a conference. Three new conferences have been created. The Lone Star, which made up entirely of universities in Texas. There are ten of them, and it's a low major conference. The Frontier Conference is comprised of teams from western states, primarily California and other Pacific states, but Alaska, Texas, New Mexico and Utah are also represented. </p><p> </p><p> The major conference that was added was the American Athletic Conference which became a bit of a catch all for teams all over from the Mississippi River east. San Francisco and Nevada are in the Pac-12. Arkansas and Houston are in the Big XII. Memphis is in the SEC. Saint Louis is in the Big 10. I don't like the way the game handles players going pro early, so I just don't let them do it. It creates super teams, which I really, really like, but I could see how some don't. </p><p> </p><p> I will make a change or two every offseason, structure wise. I'll swap out a low major team for an independent school doing well or something along those lines. I also add a team pretty much every other season. I'd love to take recommendations on what school to add, I can add pretty much any one of them. </p><p> </p><p> Transfers are eligible immediately. </p><p> </p><p> Injuries are set to 160% and academic suspensions are at 20%, so seasons can get derailed quickly. I've played this game a ton and had a lot of success, but I've never played as a Level 0 coach before and actually played on the hardest level. Had a solid year as a freshman, even if he didn't shoot the three ball well. Unlike the other guards he likes going to the basket and will get to the line pretty frequently where he's solid. I think he's a better three point shooter than he's shown, but I am worried that he'll shoot a lot of threes with our team settings the way I'll have them. I can't set individual settings for guys, which is a shame. We started off strong, thanks to some very hot shooting by our strong stable of guards. But, they fell to Earth a bit (still solid, though) and we lost a few non-con games we probably shouldn't have. We already had major issues with post depth with everyone healthy, but as the season went on we had injuries (Louis, Dickinson, Mpoyo) and academic problems (Scurry) and by the end of the year our only post players were a freshman and a walk-on sophomore. Osborne at his height was forced to play 90% in the post the last 20% of the season. </p><p> </p><p> We only had three scholarships to give, but unfortunately all of them were major contributors. No dead weight. Emmett14 Posted October 5, 2021 Author Share Posted October 5, 2021 1967-68 Season Recap Final Record: 20-12 (12-6) Southland Regular Season Conference Champs Southland Conference Tournament Champs Lost in the 1st Round of the NCAA tournament to #4 seed Texas An unequivocally great season. We got hot at the end of the season, won 6 of 7 going into the NCAA tournament before blowing a game long lead against Texas and losing on a buzzer beater by one to keep us from going to the second round. We shot the ball extremely well all season long from three, played pretty crummy defense but did a solid job at turning teams over and it allowed us to compete in most games. The Texas loss was brutal in particular because Texas is easily the most accomplished and most prestigious university in this file, and lowly Central Oklahoma beating them would have been an upset for the ages, even if Texas was an uncharacteristically low seed. We lose quite a bit. Osborne and Chapman are both major losses. They provided elite shooting at great size and both had the ability to play different positions inside and out, giving us great flexibility which covered up a lot of holes on our team, primarily a complete lack of competent post depth. Our recruiting class is pretty solid, but there aren't any guys that are going to be able to replace the production we're losing right away. With Reyes and Kappe and our entire front line coming back, I think we'll be a strong team next year, but next year we'll be losing 7 seniors and that's a lot of scholarships to fill on a low-major budget, and if the class is underwhelming, I could be jumping ship after this third season. But, I think the championships and the NCAA appearance should make me look appealing. But struggles defensively and doesn't have much outside of a jump shot. He's offering to redshirt. But, how good could he really be as a 5th year senior? Billy Wilbert, 6'1", 186, Freshman, Las Cruces, New Mexico Very quick guard who has a three point shot and is a true point guard. Emmett14 Posted December 12, 2021 Author Share Posted December 12, 2021 1968-69 Season Recap Final Record: 24-11 (12-6) Southland Conference Tournament Champs Lost in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament to #1 seed DePaul A complete shocker of a season and I'm nearly positive this is the furthest I've made it with a low major team (and I've played a LOT of seasons). I was worried we weren't going to shoot the ball as well as last season, but we were even better thanks to a tremendous season from Reyes and a great season from the newcomer Mayo. We lost Mpoyo for the season in mid-February, and I thought we were absolutely screwed without his rebounding in the lineup, but our perimeter players really stepped up and had a great season. We had an unbelievable run in the NCAA tournament, beating #3 seed Indiana, #6 seed Northern Iowa, #2 Southern Cal before losing to DePaul. Emmett14 Posted February 21, 2022 Author Share Posted February 21, 2022 Moving to Lewisburg I said in the opening post, that Menno's main motivation in his career is accumulating wins. Nothing else, and Menno thinks he has a real honey hole for the next few years coaching the Bucknell Bison. We'll go through the players, which are of course the reason why, in a bit, but fist a little about Bucknell. They are in the Patriot League, which is typically one of the better low majors each year. Bucknell's 47 prestige is the best in the conference, and for the last 40 years really, they've been consistently competitive, with several NCAA appearances (23 in their history) and with a lot of conference championships as well. The 1938-39 season in particular had a 31-4 (20-0) record and a Sweet Sixteen appearance. So, Menno is taking the reigns of a very accomplished basketball program and one that is primed to win a lot of games the next few years. Bucknell is coming off of a 21-12 (10-6) season, losing in the first game of the NIT to Fordham. Tremendous offensive potential, scores on all three levels, creates for others, gets a put back or two a game. His a horrendous defender in every way, but is so good offensively, it might not matter. Another solid offensive rebounder. Poor defender, and if he's not getting a bucket or two when he's in, he's probably not helping much. Richard Becker, 6'8", 269, Sophomore, Boston, Massachusetts Played 3 minutes last year. Shot blocker, and is another solid offensive rebounder, using his size to get position. Has a little bit of an offensive game, and could see some center minutes. Brison Cheese, 6'8", 203, Freshman, Sykesville, Maryland A walk-on and a bad one. Horrific offensively, but like the guys before him a really solid offensive rebounder. Will likely get cut after the season is over. Timmy Sanchez, 6'8", 219, Freshman, Stafford, Virginia An exciting offensive minded freshman. Scores inside, will take a three every once in a while, and should be a competent defensive rebounder which is always nice. Doesn't defend well but is a shot blocker. Will be the first post off the bench to start the year.
