It's 1966.

When Menno Morgano was a child, he dreamed of becoming the all-time-leader in something. It could be points, assists, rebounds, three pointers, whatever it was, Menno wanted to see his name at the top of a list. It was the ultimate goal. It showed you had ability and it showed you had longevity, and what could be more impressive than saying I did more of something than any other person.

Two years as a backup guard and two years as a starter averaging 10-12 points a game at the University of Seattle had taught him pretty quickly that he wasn't likely going to be all the time leader in anything. A torn ACL and MCL while in training camp in Europe with a Finnish basketball team meant he wasn't going to be the all time leader of anything on any other continent either.

Menno's basketball career was Finnished (pun intended) and he felt very unfulfilled. For the two years after his brief professional basketball foray, Menno worked as a personal trainer for various players with professional dreams as well as attended and participated in coaching clinics and basketball camps and spent his time networking and looking for a place to start his new career in basketball.

At the age of 26, Menno was looking to catch on at a solid program somewhere and bide his time as an assistant before finding a program of his own to get his head coaching career started. But, then the University of Central Oklahoma called. And they offered him the head coaching job.

Suddenly there was another record that he could reach: the all-time coaching victories record. Timothy Garza, the only man to ever reach more than 1,000 wins retired in 1942 with 1,139 of them, and he was the new target for Menno Morgano.

Menno took the Central Oklahoma job, not caring that he had offers at some high major schools to be an assistant and to put himself in position of getting a head coaching job at a higher echelon school than UCO. But, every year Morgano spent as an assistant was going to be a year that he wasn't accumulating victories to climb all 1,140 feet to get to the top of the summit of Mt. Garza.

So, let's take that first step up that mountain.

The University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos (UCO) are in Edmond, Oklahoma a suburb just north of Oklahoma City. It's a large school with a large enrollment even though their athletic programs have never made it to the level of Oklahoma State University, University of Oklahoma or University of Tulsa all of which of had solid basketball histories are all in power conferences currently.

The previous head coach was John Solomon who spent 8 years in Edmond, with just one winning season to show for it in 1959-60 when the Bronchos went 16-14 (11-5), before being fired.

UCO joined the NCAA in 1856 (the inaugural season was 1850) and was one of the earliest D-2 schools to make that transition to D-1. They joined the Southland Conference in 1871 and have been there ever since. They have made the tournament 4 times, 1906, 1928, 1929 and 1933. In their first appearance in '06, they managed an upset in the 1st round and made to a second game.

I made Morgano (a game generated name) a level 0 (out of 15) coach which meant I had 100 points to divvy out over 4 categories (recruiting, scouting, offense, defense) and I went with 10, 5, 80, 5, with offense being the 80. So, I'm going to lean pretty hard into having an offensive identity with my ballclubs, which is not something I'm use to in this game.

I received four offers for my first job, Central Oklahoma and then three MEAC schools, Savannah State, Florida A&M and South Carolina State. Florida A&M was the only real contender, but I went with UCO for a couple of reasons:

The main one was that they have a roster that really fits my offensive coaching identity, and I think I have the opportunity to be successful the first two years with the roster that I'm inheriting. The other reason is that I live in Oklahoma City and the Central Oklahoma campus is about 15 miles from my house so there is certainly a local attraction to me.

But, like the first post said, my goal is to become the all time win leader and do it in a realistic-ish number of years. And since that is my goal, I do want to prioritize winning and not being shy about changing jobs if the change will increase my win totals quicker. So, I wouldn't be upset at all if I only spend 3 or 4 years at UCO and am able to move on to another gig very quickly.

I'll have a post about the status of the 'universe' in 1966, with the various conference changes that have happened over the previous 116 years of simulated history.

Two of the staff from the previous regime went and found other jobs, Louis Pollard went to Missouri Kansas City and Denny Holman went to North Carolina A&T.

Billy Bond, 52, is staying on the staff, just like he did the last time UCO changed head coaches. Bond has been there since 1952 and will handle recruiting duties. The two new guys on staff are both brand new to the profession as well. Scout Christopher Gonzalez, 30 years old, and 28 year old Tony Datcher. Datcher is defensive minded coach who will handle most of the defensive strategy and play calling for us. I'll ditch these guys so fast it will make their heads spin as soon as I get to a better program.

The 1965-66 Bronchos, and the team that got John Solomon fired, went 12-20 (6-12). They only graduated one senior, 6'8" Carl Toews who played a career high 14 minutes a game last year averaging 3.7 points and 2.9 rebounds a game. Every other player on the team returns.

There's 453 teams in the NCAA now. All of them eligible for the NCAA tournament, 67 of which are independent and not affiliated with a conference. Three new conferences have been created. The Lone Star, which made up entirely of universities in Texas. There are ten of them, and it's a low major conference. The Frontier Conference is comprised of teams from western states, primarily California and other Pacific states, but Alaska, Texas, New Mexico and Utah are also represented.

The major conference that was added was the American Athletic Conference which became a bit of a catch all for teams all over from the Mississippi River east. It's a major conference and has a wild collection of teams.

There have been some changes to major conferences. San Francisco and Nevada are in the Pac-12. Arkansas and Houston are in the Big XII. Memphis is in the SEC. Saint Louis is in the Big 10. The Big East is the old monster conference it used to be, with 15 current teams that play each other just once a season.

The other conferences have tons of changes too, with all sorts of D2 teams and realignments, and we'll cover those as we come across them or if anyone has any questions about their favorite school. I manually made all of these changes over the years, so there's been quite a bit of movement.

Rules and Regs

The big rule I have is that players cannot go pro at any point before their senior year. I don't like the way the game handles players going pro early, so I just don't let them do it. It creates super teams, which I really, really like, but I could see how some don't.

I will make a change or two every offseason, structure wise. I'll swap out a low major team for an independent school doing well or something along those lines. I also add a team pretty much every other season. I'd love to take recommendations on what school to add, I can add pretty much any one of them.

Transfers are eligible immediately.

Injuries are set to 160% and academic suspensions are at 20%, so seasons can get derailed quickly. I've played this game a ton and had a lot of success, but I've never played as a Level 0 coach before and actually played on the hardest level. So, we'll see how I do.

The first of a handful of excellent three point shooters. Like so many of these guys, he can't play point, but isn't useless with the ball. Becht is probably the most limited of our sharp shooting guards. A poor defender and doesn't make an impact on the glass. I don't think he will start to begin the season, but I think the starting lineup could be fluid.

Another one of the shooters. Has nice size and length that gets him a few steals He was in and out of the starting lineup last year, but he's an aggressive shooter and he takes care of the ball and it's going to get him the nod at the 2 to start the season.

A walk-on turned transfer from Middle Tennessee (which there is a lot of in this game), he's one of several players on this team that has been redshirted by the last regime, and each and every one of them I wish they hadn't of been to get them off scholarship. He's not too bad, and actually is probably the best passer on the team. But he's horrible defensively and is shaky scoring the ball.

Very similar to Jenkins. Not a good defender but will get some steals and shot the ball extremely well from three last year. Is more turnover prone than the others, but will see a lot of time between the 2 and 3 off the bench.

He'll be the starter at the 3. He's got great size on the wing, rebounds better than any of the other guys and has the ability to handle the ball and create some for others. He's likely to see backup point guard duties. His big problem is he's dumb as a rock and always out of shape. So, there's the risk he'll flunk out as well as he gets gassed quickly. But, I'll play him as much as he'll let me.

Pesky guard who doesn't screw up and can hit an open three. But, he doesn't create, can't get to the basket, and he's not very good at the free throw line despite his solid percentage last year. And he's not that great defensively besides grabbing a few steals. I'm hoping he's quickly recruited over, but if he gets a few emergency minutes at the point it isn't the end of the world.

Our most talented overall guard. Had a solid year as a freshman, even if he didn't shoot the three ball well. Unlike the other guards he likes going to the basket and will get to the line pretty frequently where he's solid. I think he's a better three point shooter than he's shown, but I am worried that he'll shoot a lot of threes with our team settings the way I'll have them. I can't set individual settings for guys, which is a shame. He'll start at the point and hopefully have a really solid season.

A walk-on who redshirted last season. He's not very good, but he can shoot a little bit. Probably will cut him next season and aim for an improvement.

We have a lot of talent at guard, we do not have that in the paint. Louis is a returning starter, and will be back in it this season. He rebounds well and that's about it. He's capable of blocking more shots than he has, but I think he could muster 1 a game.

Started every game as a freshman and performed pretty well. His rebounding will keep improving, and he has a little bit of an offensive game. He handles it some and is an okay passer, but is definitely undersized at 6'6". He'll start at the 4.

A walk-on and a good one, I think. Shoots the three, although not very well and can stand and be tall and maybe block a shot if he has to come in. I always try to have one post walk on and one perimeter one, he'll do just fine as the former.

Rich Scurry, 7'0", 237, Redshirt Freshman, Hinton, Oklahoma

The last of the wish-they-didn't-redshirts. At least he's really tall and has an okay offensive game. Passes it well for a 7 footer, but is weak on the glass and just tall defensively. Might be an all right backup in a few years.

Britton Jenneto, 6'8", 258, Freshman, Dallas, Texas

I think Jenneto has some potential. He can score it offensively at every level and as he gets stronger will be okay on the glass. I'm hoping he can stay an offensive spark off the bench and out of the starting lineup for his career. He doesn't have THAT much potential.

1966-67 Season Recap

Final Record: 14-16 (10-8)

I was hoping for better. We started off strong, thanks to some very hot shooting by our strong stable of guards. But, they fell to Earth a bit (still solid, though) and we lost a few non-con games we probably shouldn't have. We already had major issues with post depth with everyone healthy, but as the season went on we had injuries (Louis, Dickinson, Mpoyo) and academic problems (Scurry) and by the end of the year our only post players were a freshman and a walk-on sophomore. Osborne at his height was forced to play 90% in the post the last 20% of the season.

We only had three scholarships to give, but unfortunately all of them were major contributors. No dead weight. But, we had a pretty solid first recruiting class.

Very unique player. Shoots it well, great size, has some passing ability. Is always a risk academically and not in the best of shape. He'll start at the 2, but he can play 1-4 and hold his own.

Kyle Kappe, 6'1", 206, Junior, Edina, Missouri

JUCO guard who was ranked #371 in the nation. Well rounded offensive player who will attack the basket and keep them honest from three. Is not a point guard at all, despite his smaller size. One of our better defenders which says more about the lack of defensive talent on the squad than his ability. Will be in the rotation for sure, and I wouldn't be surprised if he replaces Chapman in the starting lineup at some point.

I cut last year's walk-on Chris Berry and I'm glad I did since we got this guy in his place. He has actual offensive talent on the wing, even if his defense is an abomination.

Dainan Kimbrough, 6'2", 177, Freshman, Corpus Christi, Texas

Our only scholarship freshman and he looks like he could be a good one. A true point guard with excellent vision he also brings a very steady three point shot. He'll never be anything on defense, but as he fills out he should turn into an adequate rebounder. He's a great athlete and the only true point guard on the team, so I think he'll see 15 minutes a game right off the bat.

JUCO with real height and some unique skills. A good passer for a big man as well as a very solid three point shooter. Solid on the offensive glass, but just okay on the defensive side of the boards. Average defensively. I think he's an upgrade over Louis, last year's center.

Made it into the stating lineup for one game due to injuries and was promptly injured himself and done for the season. Good rebounder, okay defender, no offensive game. Might play some if rebounding is a constant problem.

Missed the second semester due to academic problems. The only 7 footer on the team, he's got some offensive touch inside, but doesn't rebound and only plays okay defense. Like Chism and Mpoyo is a solid passer for a big man.

Lost in the 1st Round of the NCAA tournament to #4 seed Texas

An unequivocally great season. We got hot at the end of the season, won 6 of 7 going into the NCAA tournament before blowing a game long lead against Texas and losing on a buzzer beater by one to keep us from going to the second round.

We shot the ball extremely well all season long from three, played pretty crummy defense but did a solid job at turning teams over and it allowed us to compete in most games. The Texas loss was brutal in particular because Texas is easily the most accomplished and most prestigious university in this file, and lowly Central Oklahoma beating them would have been an upset for the ages, even if Texas was an uncharacteristically low seed.

We lose quite a bit. Osborne and Chapman are both major losses. They provided elite shooting at great size and both had the ability to play different positions inside and out, giving us great flexibility which covered up a lot of holes on our team, primarily a complete lack of competent post depth. Our recruiting class is pretty solid, but there aren't any guys that are going to be able to replace the production we're losing right away.

With Reyes and Kappe and our entire front line coming back, I think we'll be a strong team next year, but next year we'll be losing 7 seniors and that's a lot of scholarships to fill on a low-major budget, and if the class is underwhelming, I could be jumping ship after this third season. But, I think the championships and the NCAA appearance should make me look appealing.

A four man class, taking 3 perimeter players and a post. Finally cutting some dead weight with Ayala and Randolph. Didn't get the stud I was hoping for, and there was a guy out of Utah we really wanted who bolted last second. But the JUCO Mayo looks like a plug and play perimeter player, while the two freshman should provide capable depth right away. They'll get more detail on them later.

Has been an emergency fill in the last two years. Doesn't turn it over, can hit a shot too and even grab a steal. But is poor defensively and doesn't create for others.

JUCO guard from Texas who will likely slot right into the starting lineup. A combo guard with defensive abilities that has a nice jumper and will contribute on the glass. Will need to step right into a major role if we're going to have success this year.

An athletic guard with some nice size and some real passing chops. Will likely be the first guard off the bench and will allow Reyes to play off the ball a decent amount. Had a really good summer.

Pretty underwhelming. Has nice size and a decent three point shot. Rebounds some and a solid passer. But struggles defensively and doesn't have much outside of a jump shot. He's offering to redshirt. But, how good could he really be as a 5th year senior?

Billy Wilbert, 6'1", 186, Freshman, Las Cruces, New Mexico

Very quick guard who has a three point shot and is a true point guard. Defends adequately enough, but this guy looks like he'll be a steady contributor, even if starting is overextending him.

An excellent rebounder with some real ball skills. He and Chism make for a very good offensive rebounding tandem for the Southland. He's undersized and will never be more than 6 ppg or so, but will be back in the starting lineup at the 4.

His playing time dipped quite a bit. Has some offensive abilities, but is so lackluster elsewhere and has not really performed with any consistency that Scurry has passed him by.

Broughton is an east coast JUCO that is kind of a cross between Scurry and Jenneto skill wise, but we'll have to wait to see that underwhelming hybrid until spring semester because Broughton went and flunked some classes.

1968-69 Season Recap

Final Record: 24-11 (12-6)

Southland Conference Tournament Champs

Lost in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament to #1 seed DePaul

A complete shocker of a season and I'm nearly positive this is the furthest I've made it with a low major team (and I've played a LOT of seasons). I was worried we weren't going to shoot the ball as well as last season, but we were even better thanks to a tremendous season from Reyes and a great season from the newcomer Mayo.

We lost Mpoyo for the season in mid-February, and I thought we were absolutely screwed without his rebounding in the lineup, but our perimeter players really stepped up and had a great season. We had an unbelievable run in the NCAA tournament, beating #3 seed Indiana, #6 seed Northern Iowa, #2 Southern Cal before losing to DePaul. Reyes down the stretch was a killer, game after game with 20+ getting his season average up to 20.5, which was 16th in the nation.

We lose a lot this year, but have a pretty decent class coming in, but I think I'm a shoe-in to leave and head elsewhere. I should get some solid offers and I think I'll jump at one of them.

Moving to Lewisburg

I said in the opening post, that Menno's main motivation in his career is accumulating wins. Nothing else, and Menno thinks he has a real honey hole for the next few years coaching the Bucknell Bison.

We'll go through the players, which are of course the reason why, in a bit, but fist a little about Bucknell.

They are in the Patriot League, which is typically one of the better low majors each year. Bucknell's 47 prestige is the best in the conference, and for the last 40 years really, they've been consistently competitive, with several NCAA appearances (23 in their history) and with a lot of conference championships as well. The 1938-39 season in particular had a 31-4 (20-0) record and a Sweet Sixteen appearance.

So, Menno is taking the reigns of a very accomplished basketball program and one that is primed to win a lot of games the next few years.

Bucknell is coming off of a 21-12 (10-6) season, losing in the first game of the NIT to Fordham.

So, two starters are gone, both productive, though it is Kasibabu, the 4 year starter and 3 time 1st team all conference guard who will be the biggest hole to fill.

The only senior on the roster and he's a walk-on, which means no scholarships at all to give this cycle which is a bummer. But, he's a good three point shooter who has actually gotten some decent run in his career. He has some size and can block shots as well as not embarrass himself on the glass. So potentially he could slide to the 4 in an emergency.

A unique, versatile player who will see a ton of minutes this year. By far our best defender and overall best athlete. Handles the ball really well, and will slide over to point quite a bit. Gets on the glass and contributes there. His offensive game isn't pretty, but he shot 51% from the field last year despite a poor 14-62 performance from three, so hopefully he's at least competent.

Jacob Hall, 6'7", 229, Junior, Rio Grande City, Texas

A transfer from Northwestern State (LA) who played 16 minutes last year and didn't record a single statistic except for a missed three. He redshirted in '67, and I really wish he hadn't.

Brandon Lotts, 6'3", 210, Junior, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania

Undersized but athletic and strong two guard. Has a nice three point shot and could be a solid offensive spark off the bench for us the next few years.

Jake Gonzalez, 6'4", 194, Freshman, Creeson, Pennsylvania

One of the reasons I came to Bucknell. Tremendous shooter with tons of range, who I'm going to encourage to shoot very often. Will probably come off the bench the first two years, but I'm hoping for 20 minutes a game from him with several threes. Turnover prone, so is very much a catch and shoot player.

Charles Perez, 6'2", 188, Freshman, Washington, Connecticut

THE reason I came here, really. Tremendous offensive potential, scores on all three levels, creates for others, gets a put back or two a game. His a horrendous defender in every way, but is so good offensively, it might not matter. Will start at the 2, and potentially score 20 a game as a freshman.

Rob Pilipovic, 6'4", 201, Freshman, Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania

Not nearly as exciting as the other two. Okay looking offensive player, but doesn't help on the glass and is nothing great defensively. Wouldn't mind a transfer.

Big time rebounder and is a competent post scorer to boot. A double double threat every game. Strong position defender who will need to anchor our defense. Will be a 4 year starter at Bucknell.

Had a great year last year, earning 1st team All-Patriot honors. Scores the ball inside, is tough on the offensive glass, I mean 15.9 and 7.5 as a sophomore speak for themselves. I do think his scoring numbers will fall a bit this season though.

Undersized big man who can score it a little bit and can step out and shoot a three. Another solid offensive rebounder. Poor defender, and if he's not getting a bucket or two when he's in, he's probably not helping much.

Richard Becker, 6'8", 269, Sophomore, Boston, Massachusetts

Played 3 minutes last year. Shot blocker, and is another solid offensive rebounder, using his size to get position. Has a little bit of an offensive game, and could see some center minutes.

Brison Cheese, 6'8", 203, Freshman, Sykesville, Maryland

A walk-on and a bad one. Horrific offensively, but like the guys before him a really solid offensive rebounder. Will likely get cut after the season is over.

Timmy Sanchez, 6'8", 219, Freshman, Stafford, Virginia

An exciting offensive minded freshman. Scores inside, will take a three every once in a while, and should be a competent defensive rebounder which is always nice. Doesn't defend well but is a shot blocker. Will be the first post off the bench to start the year.
