Hollywood Posted October 16, 2023 Share Posted October 16, 2023 New Japan Pro Wrestling was founded by Antonio Inoki in 1972, following his break from the Japanese Wrestling Association (founded in 1953 by Inoki’s trainer, the legendary Rikidozan). The company of today bears partial resemblance to the company of Inoki, having changed ownership twice but still pays immense tribute to its founder. They still refer to New Japan’s philosophy and style as Strong Style, a phrase coined by Inoki that most find difficult to define; most attempts end in a hodgepodge of hard striking, stubborn fighting spirit, an appreciation of simplicity, but also a flair for dramatically charismatic bursts of roaring. Modern NJPW matches attempt to capture this essence, though often filtered through a framework reminiscent of classic King’s Road All-Japan (the company founded in 1972 by Giant Baba, Rikidozan’s other star pupil.) New Japan flourished through the ‘70s and ‘80s, centering on Inoki, homegrown talent, and a parade of foreign menaces. By the ’80s, a new crop of wrestlers trained by Inoki had emerged, including Tatsumi Fujinami, Riki Choshu, and the original Tiger Mask, Satoru Sayama. Into this mix were foreign wrestlers such as Hulk Hogan and Big Van Vader, who both achieved massive success in Japan before they did so in America. Starting around 1990, the next generation of New Japan legends began to assert themselves: Keiji Mutoh, Masahiro Chono, Shinya Hashimoto, Jushin Liger, and Hiroshi Hase, among others like Choshu acolyte Kensuke Sasaki. This generation would draw incredible attendances and gates and influence an entire generation through their partnership with World Championship Wrestling. Many traditions in New Japan, including the G1 Climax and Best of the Super Juniors, started in this period. NJPW continued to successfully produce tremendous wrestlers, several of whom would become known as the “Third Generation:” Yuji Nagata, Satoshi Kojima, Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Manabu Nakanishi, Osamu Nishimura, and Koji Kanemoto, among others. Unfortunately, this period saw gate success falter, partly due to the rise of mixed martial arts (especially Pride Fighting Championships and K-1) and a larger wrestling recession of the early-2000s. Inoki’s response was not favorably received. Intoxicated by the allure of MMA, to which he had always considered himself a proto-MMA fighter (obviously including his famed, and derided, battle with Muhammed Ali), Inoki leaned into this concept. He had several of his wrestlers enter MMA fights with mixed results. Shinsuke Nakamura did adequately, while Yuji Nagata was obliterated by Mirko Cro Cop and Fedor Emelianenko. Inoki heavily pushed wrestlers like Kazuyuki Fujita, who had MMA success but did not catch on in pro wrestling. Inoki departed New Japan in 2005, selling to Yuke’s. This is where New Japan began a slow comeback story. Hiroshi Tanahashi led the way, willing himself to ace status. Shinsuke Nakamura, originally a supernova rookie that plateaued, went to Mexico and returned with the flamboyant character he portrays to this day. And most importantly, two kids from the dojo system, Tetsuya Naito and Kazuchika Okada, would return from excursion in 2010 and 2012, respectively. Yuke’s sold NJPW to Bushiroad in 2012, the year Okada returned. From this point, wrestling history would be fundamentally changed by a sequence of events originating in New Japan: Okada and Tanahashi would embark on a four-year feud over the IWGP Heavyweight title, confirming Tanahashi’s status as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time and elevating Okada into a superstar that would take New Japan global. The company launched New Japan World, with English commentary on most major events. Tetsuya Naito went to Mexico in mid-2015, leaving as a face but returning as the lethargic heel he portrays today, having aligned with Los Ingobernables during his month in CMLL. His chase of Okada from 2017-2020 brought the company to unprecedented heights. Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi full transfer from DDT. Omega’s reign as BULLET CLUB leader from 2016-2018, including a legendary four-match rivalry with Okada and Wrestle Kingdom match with Chris Jericho, essentially laid the groundwork for All Elite Wrestling. NJPW now finds itself transitioning into a new era. The pillars of the old way, like Tanahashi and Naito, are slowly losing steam, and their bodies are starting to crumble. Okada, being the younger of this generation, has shifted towards a role as an easily provoked, ornery veteran who refuses to capitulate to the next generation. New returns like Yota Tsuji and Shota Umino have taken shots at titles well before schedule. IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Champions BULLET CLUB War Dogs Clark Connors & Drilla Moloney Debut entry After an impressive defence against the Intergalactic Jet Setters on October 9, the BULLET CLUB War Dogs will be wearing the titles heading into the Super Jr. Tag League and they’ll be relishing the targets on their backs. YOH & MUSASHI Debut entry The 2022 Super Junior Tag League winners, YOH and Lio Rush would be set for a sure favourite spot in Super Junior Tag League, but after illness beset Rush on the last tour, YOH reached out to an old friend: M-Pro’s MUSASHI. Can YOH make the team dream work for a second year in a row? Ichiban Sweet Boys Robbie Eagles & Kosei Fujita Debut entry Kosei Fujita’s ‘world tour’ takes him back to Japan where he combines with TMDK teammate Robbie Eagles. Eagles and Fujita have been impressive in Australia in recent weeks with wins including over the Natural Classics in NJPW TAMASHII. Now, this first time SJTL combination could be a dark horse tandem to win the whole league. Catch 2/2 TJP & Francesco Akira 2nd entry, 2nd consecutive Catch 2/2 headed into last year’s Super Junior Tag League as champions, and as a championship team that restored prestige and value in the IWGP Junior Tag titles as workhorse championships in the pro-wrestling world. Though coming up short of the trophies, they did retain the tag titles in the face of eventual winners Lio Rush and YOH- this year they’ll be using the league as a jumping off point to get back to title contention. Los Ingobernables de Japon BUSHI & Titan 2nd entry, 2nd consecutive Back in Japan for the first time since making the Best of the Super Jr. 30 final, Titan reforms his masked man tag team with BUSHI. A dynamic and hard-hitting combination, the LIJ pair were well in the mix heading into the final days of last year’s league, and look to go a step further in 2023. El Desperado & Master Wato Debut Entry The Best of Seven trios series that played out through the Road to Destruction was meant to settle just who were the better men across three separate rivalries and determine who was the best team overall. It doesn’t exactly seem like that turned out to be the case after Destruction in Ryogoku, but it does seem to have engendered a mutual, if grudging respect between both sides. Royal Quest III saw Shota Umino and Ren Narita unite for a common good in London and in SJTL, Master Wato and El Desperado will put long-held differences aside in the hope of securing the tag trophies. HOUSE OF TORTURE SHO & Yoshinobu Kanemaru Debut entry If SHO’s behaviour was contemptible enough to be dubbed ‘the shame of Ehime’ during last year’s SJTL tour, things might get even worse with Heel Master Yoshinobu Kanemaru acting as the Murder Machine’s ultimate enabler. In SHO and Kanemaru, H.O.T now have two of the most dominant players in the junior tag ranks of the last six years under the same team banner, and the two are sure to throw wrenches (and whiskey) in the works of any other team plans. Ryusuke Taguchi & The DKC Debut Entry Ryusuke Taguchi doesn’t have the best of reputations when it comes to having tag team partners leave him, and history has repeated for the coach from last year to this. Clark Connors and Ryusuke Taguchi made quite the endearing team in the 2022 SJTL, but Connors’ new direction and current success in BULLET CLUB War Dogs put paid to that. Connors’ departure came at the bitter and violent expense of the DKC, who now looks to bring the fire to this combination, and has a lot of unfinished business with Clark. Intergalactic Jet Setters KUSHIDA & Kevin Knight 2nd entry, 2nd consecutive Kevin Knight and KUSHIDA head into their second Super Junior Tag League with top-flight experience under their belts and confidence in themselves and one another. Last year’s tournament saw an unprecedented rise for Knight, who graduated from Young Lion status mid-tour, and it could be argued that Knight was just as responsible for KUSHIDA’s success in the team as the other way around. This year they could well be in the running heading into the final night in Osaka. Just Five Guys DOUKI & TAKA Michinoku Debut entry Rounding out the lineup are DOUKI and TAKA Michinoku for Just Five Guys. Pairing the ever-dynamic and popular DOUKI with the ‘legend’ TAKA may seem on its surface like an underdog side, but Michinoku has picked up quite a few wins in the last tour, and this duo could surprise over the course of the league. The funky comedy team of Taguchi and The DKC tried to find their Way to the Grand Hole but Wato and Desperado quickly dispatched them. 7. SUPER Jr. TAG LEAGUE 2023: BULLET CLUB War Dogs (Clark Connors & Drilla Moloney) [2] def. YOH & MUSASHI [M-PRO] [0] (14:02) after the Trophy Kill from Connors on MUSASHI. (57) Looking to rekindle the magic he found with Lio Rush last year, YOH's friend and partner MUSASHI was welcomed to the cerulean blue by the dastardly BULLET CLUB War Dogs. The IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team champions made the friends' night a living hell and eventually put MUSASHI out and away with the Trophy Kill. It looks like this is the War Dogs' tournament to lose. 8. SUPER Jr. TAG LEAGUE 2023: HOUSE OF TORTURE (Yoshinobu Kanemaru & SHO) [2] def. Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI & Titan) [0] (14:41) after the Snake Bite from SHO on BUSHI. (60) Shenanigans galore in our main event as the HOUSE OF TORTURE and Los Ingobernables de Japon fought to see who could wrestle dirtier. Kanemaru spit his whiskey in Titan's face, incapacitating the CMLL standout, and then BUSHI spit the mist in Kanemaru's! This split-second moment allowed SHO to sneak in and hit the Snake Bit for the win to earn two points for the HOUSE. (61) - The mutual respect between Shota Umino and Ren Narita helped the young monster Oskar Leube bring out some extra aggression against the United Empire. The Empire's young upstart Callum Newman tried his best but fell victim to Shota's Death Rider as two-thirds of the Reiwa 3 Musketeers continued to impress. - Yuya Uemura is back in New Japan Pro-Wrestling and is here to show the world why some claim he's the forgotten "Reiwa Musketeer". Uemura has been racking up pins lately and got another huge win against his smiling contemporary in what may be considered an upset but those who know will say otherwise. - Zack Sabre Jr. and Botlin Oleg finally clashed in Korakuen Hall for the NJPW Television championship. Oleg used his wrestling ability to make Zack think about impressive counters but the champion's experience gave him an edge to earn his fifteenth defense. - BUSHI and Titan earned their first points in the tournament over the zany duo of Ryusuke Taguchi and The DKC. BUSHI sprayed mist to put a stop to Taguchi's ass-based offence and Titan scored the fall over DKC with the Angel Immortal. - TMDK's Ichiban Sweet Boys got the win over Just 5 Guys' TAKA Michinoku and DOUKI. Kosei Fujita was able to get a lot of offense on the wrestling legend TAKA but DOUKI played bully until Eagles got the hot tag. Eagles put TAKA away for the points. - The mutual respect between Ren Narita and El Desperado has led to the creation of a dangerous pair in the Junior Tag Team division as they dispatched YOH & Michinoku Pro's MUSASHI to continue their lead in the tournament. - Another two points for the HOUSE as SHO and Yoshinobu Kanemaru beat the Intergalactic Jet Setters after some nefarious cheating. KUSHIDA and Kevin Knight - former IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag champions - continue to have a rocky start in this year's League. - Catch 2/2 managed to get their win back over the BULLET CLUB War Dogs - who previously beat the United Empire's team at NJPW STRONG Independence Day to win the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Tag titles - and score two more points in the tournament. The champions did not go gently into the good night and brought their all but TJP's years of experience gave him a slight edge over the competition. With the teams now 1-1 in competition, this rivalry continues to heat up.
