New D-II Diary

Recommended Posts

I am taking over the leadership of the Rhode Island Rams. Since I am a Colorado State Ram, I decided to help out my D-II affilate Ram squad. Sadly, these Rhode Island Rams really suck. We have 55 prestige--but almost everyone else in conference (Atlantic-10) is 70+. (I think the prestige for DII is too high for most schools in this mod). We are projected to finish 11th in conference, and the expectations are to just win a conference game and play close against Brown. Hopefully I can do that. We play in the Atlantic 10, which is one of the best conferences in the league. We have enough talent to win a couple of games, but this will probably be a losing season for us.

Depth Chart: (ratings out of 20) Quarterbacks: Jeff Fontenot (18/18) will need to have a great season. Has a lightning arm but is extremely slow. Is only a junior, and hopefully will return next year. Gene Flowers (12/14) Also a junior. A nice backup with an almost equally good arm as Fontenot but is even worse at running (17). Howie Waddy (6/9) A redshirt frosh. Charlie Garcia (5/10) True Freshman. I am of course happy with the QB situation. Running Backs: Tony Kimrin (13/13) Amazing inside runner. Sadly, he is a senior. Dave Haygood (7/12) Not good at running (55) which is strange, but has nice speed. Emile Morris (3/10) True Freshman FB Charlie Stransky (9/12) Could be a force in the run or pass game. FB Ken Dawson (7/7) I am pleased with the running backs as well. Receivers: Damien Hinton (9/17) (rFr) Should be a hall of fame receiver for us. Adam McAlister (8/8) Senior presence should be good at WR2. Altie Cromartie (7/12) This junior could be quite a slot receiver. Keith Green (5/5) Adequate 4th wideout. TE Ryan Hagberg (7/11) more of a blocker. TE Jason Dickinson (6/11) Better receiver, will play 3rd downs. TE Tim Turner (4/12) only a sophomore. I like Hinton, but I want more depth here. Line: OT Garrison McMahon (6/12) Sophmore OT Kenny Cox (4/4) SR OT Pat Modzelewskie (5/5) SR OT Brad Vincent (4/11) JR OT Cliff Stone (1/9) Freshman OG Carl Dominguez (12/13) Junior OG Ron Grasmanis (11/11) Senior OG Art Schlesinger (5/15) Sophomore OG Pete Mitchell (4/9) Freshman C Jordan McClure (8/8) Junior C Dan Hull (5/10) Junior Tackle is poor, Guard is good for us, and the Center position is okay. D Line: DE Lawrence McCutcheon (7/10) Junior DE Dominic Lathon (5/10) Sophomore DE Jacoby O'Neal (7/7) Senior DE Ike Gaylor (3/11) Freshman DT Rick Rutledge (9/13) Sophomore DT Jason Zgonia (5/5) Senior DT Vaughn Bowen (2/14) Freshman--hopefully he develops well DT Dallas Danenhauer (1/8) Freshman The D line needs work, but if Gaylor and Bowen develop, they could be quite a duo. Linebackers: ILB Marion George (8/8) Senior ILB Tim Bell (6/16) Freshman--should be the star of the defense in a few years. ILB Dave Hawkes (4/13) Sophomore--another nice prospect. OLB Randy Anderson (7/15) Sophomore OLB J.T. Thomas (7/7) Senior OLB Dan Williams (5/8) Junior Certainly this should be a strong position in the future for us. Not great but not bad this year. D Backs: CB Nick Thornton (10/10) Senior CB Joey Smith (7/9) Junior CB Bobby Galimore (6/12) redshirt freshman CB Eddie Douglass (6/10) Sophomore CB Billy Gant (4/11) Freshman FS Tommy Fox (6/7) Sophomore FS DeWayne Tunnell (4/9) Junior FS Keith Williams (2/9) Freshman SS Willie St. Louis (9/9) Senior SS Trevor Cline (9/12) Junior I am happy with the secondary. Hopefully one of the free safeties will earn a job. The fight between St. Louis and Cline for the starting SS job should be intense. Do I play the senior or the junior with more upside? Kicker/Punter K Andy Smith (7/16) Freshman. K Art Diem (1/5) Sophomore P Shane Rodgers (10/10) Senior P Mack Scott (7/9) Junior More good players here. ------------- We will utilize a 3-3-5 defense and a west coast offense. Kimrin, the running back, is a good pass-catching back, and we will utilize his skill at that role. Fontenot has a lightning arm, so we will look to throw deep to McAlister and Hinton, who both have nice speed. Mostly though, we will be throwing short passes, and we have two good tight ends who will aid in that effort. Overall, I think we have a nice offense, with a pretty good OL that should get Kimrin some holes, and an amazing quarterback. The defense will routinely fail us though--I think we will need to score early and often to win this season.

Team Schedule I scheduled St. Francis, Valpo, and Mississippi Valley State for non-conf games, and we still have a ridiculously hard schedule. 7 ranked games-- crazy. I don't want to play the #1, #5 and #8 teams in one year. We will be lucky to get a bowl with this schedule. Luckily, St. Francis is the WORST ranked team in the league, so at least we start the season with a win. WEEK OPPONENT SCORE 1 Saint Francis - 2 at Valparaiso - 3 OPEN - 4 at #18 Northeastern - 5 #24 Hofstra - 6 at Towson - 7 #8 William & Mary - 8 Dartmouth - 9 at #13 James Madison - 10 at #15 New Hampshire - 11 #1 Massachusetts - 12 #5 Villanova - 13 at Mississippi Valley State - 14 OPEN - 15 OPEN

The Ram faithful have been anxiously awaiting the first game under my coaching tenure. Today, I hope to provide them with a great first game at our home stadium. We are 26 point favourites, and we should win by at least that much. Their team has no green/blue players, two yellows, and a dark red starting QB (4/8) rated. They are truly awful. St. Francis (0-0) @ Rhode Island (0-0) First play from scrimmage: 21 yard carry for Kimrin. What a great start. They actually hold us to a punt after that though. They Strike first!!! on a 32 yard TD carry. 7-0 St. Francis. What happened? Damien Hinton gets open and catches a 55 yard pass, but it is called off due to a holding call. Tony Kimron has 70 yards on 9 carries, but a 4th-short failure keeps us off the scoreboard. 2nd Quarter Kimrin--already a 100 yard rusher, now adds a Touchdown through the air, with a 4 yard TD catch. 10-7 Rams after a short Saint Francis punt, and 22 yard Kimrin run set up a Smith kick. 17-7 as Kimrin gets a 1 yard TD run with 7 seconds left in the half. That would be the score at halftime. 3rd Quarter Kimrin leads another nice drive to start the 3rd quarter, and we add a field goal. 20-7 Rams. Shockingly, they get another drive going to our 3 yard line. Luckily, we hold them a field goal. 20-10 Rams. I am not impressed with the offense so far for us. We were supposed to win by 26. 4th Quarter Fontenot then gets picked in our own territory, and they have a good chance of making this a one possession game. They get stopped, but our next possession ends in a 4th-1 stopped at midfield. They added a field goal to make it 20-13. They then held us to 3rd-3 at our own 21. Luckily, FB Charlies Stransky made an electrfying 26 yard run to get us near midfield and out of the danger zone of our own red zone with under 5 minutes left. We add a field goal, and the game ends after that drive. 23-13.[CODE] TEAM 1Q 2Q 3Q 4Q OT FINAL Saint Francis (0-1) 7 0 3 3 0 13 Rhode Island (1-0) 0 17 3 3 0 23 Team Statistics STFR URI First Downs 10 23 Rushing 2 12 Passing 8 10 Penalty 0 1 3rd-down Efficiency 6-15 6-19 4th-down Efficiency 0-3 4-4 Total Net Yards 221 395 Total plays 57 87 Average gain 3.9 4.5 Net Yards Rushing 27 231 Rushes 26 51 Average per rush 1 4.5 Net Yards Passing 194 164 Completed-attempted 19-28 21-33 Yards per pass 6.9 5 Sacked-yards lost 3-13 3-9 Had intercepted 2 1 Punts-average 6-34 2-44.5 Return Yardage 205 143 Punts-returns 2-35 4-53 Kickoffs-returns 6-164 4-80 Interceptions-returns 1-6 2-10 Penalties-yards 9-65 9-65 Fumbles-lost 0-0 0-0 Touchdowns 1 2 Rushing 1 1 Passing 0 1 Extra Points 1-1 2-2 Field Goals 2-2 3-3 Red Zone Efficiency 3-4-75% 2-3-66.7% Time Of Possession 24:31 35:29 First Quarter STFR TD 10:20 7-0 Bill Bentley 10 YD Run (Roell Pottios Kick). Next Up: We play @ Valparaiso-- the 115th best team in the country. We are only 23 point favorites this time around. Hopefully we will give a more inspired effort than last week's survival vs. Saint Francis. 1st Quarter Nice start! Fontenot to Hinton for a 57 yard TD! They counter with a 35 yard bomb of their own. 7-7 the 1st quarter ends tied at 7, but we are driving. 2nd Quarter We settle for a 25 yard Carlos Smith field goal. 10-7 Rams. Kimrin already has 50 yards rushing. However, their RB Jackson has 79 yards on 8 carries so far-- so they are striking back with their offense. 10-10 now after they get a field goal. 17-10 Rams after a beautiful 27 yard Hinton end around and then an 11 yard TD pass to Cromartie. The offense is rolling for the Rams today. oops--I set the game to enable pc playcalling and forgot about it. It simmed the rest of the game. We won 40-22! Tony Kimrin-with 156 yards of rushing and a TD led the offense. Two starts, two 150 yards games for Kimrin. But next week, the competition gets much harder. Rhode Island (2-0) @ #25 Northeastern (2-0) Northeastern is #14 in the coaches poll. They also have a star QB, but they have a defense to go with him. They are 12 point favorites and have an excellent team. Luckily, several OL are out for them. They do have an excellent secondary, however, so we will need to run it well to win this game. Kimrin must have another great game. Jeff Fontenot has a slight injury, but is probably and will start today. His backup, Gene Flowers, played well with 140 yards passing and a TD as his backup last week. 1st Quarter 3-0 Northeastern after a 35 yard pass sets up a field goal. 3 minutes left in the first quarter, and we still haven't gotten a first down. We finally get a couple of first downs and set up a 47 yard field goal, but Carlos Smith left it wide right. Holding! 2nd Quarter We got a new set of downs, and Fontenot then found Adam McAlister for a 24 yard TD pass. 7-3 Rams. Fontenot is out now for 2 to 4 weeks! What a devastating injury. Gene Flowers (12/14) rated takes over. Carlos Smith converts his next try--from 49. 10-3 Rams Northeastern strikes back quickly with a long TD pass to tie the game at 10. Northeastern then strikes again with a 40 yard pass right before time ran out in the half. 3rd Quarter 20-10 after NU gets a nice drive to start the half. A 13 play drive for us follows, but ends in only a short field goal. 20-13 NU. We need to get the run game going. 4th Quarter Our first conference game should end in an exciting fourth-quarter finish. We get it back after a punt at their 40. Fontenot, though injured, will return for the 4th quarter. Fontenot is hurt again, and is now doubtful. Flowers returns. Flowers is picked off in the end zone with 12 minutes left. I feel better, I really needed Fontenot, as Flowers int showed. 37 yard TD pass for Northeastern, and we are in trouble. 27-13. Flowers completes a 35 yard pass, but then throws another Interception. 3rd string QB Charlie Garcia, a true freshman (5/9) will take over, as I am sick of Flowers. Garcia has a strong arm, and will hopefully make some big plays. They get another TD in the closing moments. 34-13 Northeastern is the final. What a dissappointing game. We NEED Fontenot to win, and he is out for a bit, it appears. Flowers got lots of yards, but the interceptions were deadly. Kimrin also didn't show up. Not a good showing for the Rams in our first conference game.
