The ONE and ONLY SWF.com diary!

Recommended Posts

My idea for a diary is a little different than the ones I have seen--and forgive me if this has been done before--but I think it plays more to my strengths then a regular diary would. It will be written as though it were a column from SWF’s own website, kind of like a recap for the show held the night before, whether it was a TV taping or a PPV. I plan on writing the diary in two voices--characters, if you will, though they do not actually appear in the game--and allowing them to tell the stories in their own “style”. Lincoln “Link” Stewart is the main voice of the diary, as he is the writer of the weekly “Hits & Misses” column, recapping the shows in a Hit or Miss format. He’s a traditionalist who prefers the wrestling aspect of the business to sports entertainment (why work for SWF then?) and he is a loyal, company guy, along the same lines as Jim Ross in the WWE. He’s more apt to stick to kayfabe, cheer the faces and boo the heels and keep the backstage stuff out of his column, but he will give credit where it is due. Howard “The Spruce Goose” Sprules was the webmaster of his own wrestling website before SWF bought him out and brought him onto their staff. He knows what he likes out of his entertainment--wrestling or otherwise--and is outspoken about his desire to be entertained. He used to write the “Rumor Has It” column on SWF.com but was removed after a disagreement with Richard Eisen. Afraid to let him go, either to TCW or back to running his own site, Eisen kept him on the payroll and has him fill-in as needed. I see him as an amalgam of the guys from Pwinsider.com (with fewer typos, I hope) and with his outspoken nature and wealth of backstage contacts, it’s only a matter of time before he gets his own column again. I am playing the default Cornelleverse as SWF, with the following changes: 1.) I have switched the beginning game time to January 2006, just because I like to play from the beginning of the year on. 2.) I have switched all SWF PPVs from Week 2 to Week 4 of each month just so I can have a longer build between shows. 3.) I have modified the SWF Shooting Star title to function as a belt for Youngsters as opposed to High Flyers (I look at it as a different kind of Shooting Star) and I have changed the maximum weight limit to None to help facilitate that change. 4.) I have ported over all of the new wrestlers from WreSpi2 (well, I think I got them all anyway) and added them to the default data. Babes of Sin City was added and all contracts and titles assigned to the promotion in WreSpi2 were also included. I also did the best I could to add the new relationships and tag teams from WreSpi2, but I don’t know if I managed to get all of them. 5.) Without an accurate way to portray INSPIRE in TEW 2005, I just ignored it and left things in Japan they way they were. New workers under contract to INSPIRE were made unemployed at the start of the game. 6.) In a previous game, I started my own promotion--Youth Pro Wrestling--and I forgot to remove it from the default database when I started the diary game, so if there is ever any mention of YPW in the diary, now you know how it came to exist. I think that about covers it and I hope it sounds interesting to someone other than myself. I know doing a diary has made TEW more fun to play and I will do my best to post regular entries--at least until I buy TEW 2007 and have to start all over again. LOL I welcome any questions or comments and hope whomever reads it enjoys it.

You know me. You know I consider myself something of a traditionalist, preferring the in-ring action to the glitz and glamour of Sports Entertainment. Don’t get me wrong, the pomp, the circumstance, the braggadocio all have a place in pro-wrestling, but I would rather have them in small doses. Unfortunately, last night’s show had more of the latter than I’d like, but it was still a good show and a strong way for SWF to start off the New Year. On with my thoughts . . . HITS: Connecticut Symphony Hall--always nice to play in front of the “home” crowd and last night was no exception . . . Starting the show off with the champion is always a good way to get the crowd into things and Runaway Train cut a decent promo which the crowd was really into . . . Lords of War vs. The Amazing Bumfholes was a solid opening match with the veteran Lords showing the youngsters a thing or two about tag team wrestling . . . Speaking of tag teams, The Almighty Dollar cut a solid promo. Remo had the crowd eating out of his hand; I see big things in the future for this tandem . . . Frehley’s Comet is a devastating finisher; you have got to see it in person . . . Though a little lewd--as usual--Joe Sexy really got the crowd into what he was saying and set up his title defense against Enygma very well . . . Like I said, The Almighty Dollar is a team on the rise and their match with High Concept was easily the best match on the card up until that point. Even a cheap finish didn’t hurt . . . Jack Bruce gave a focused, intense promo. It’s good to see him with some direction and I hope Runaway Train has the courage to answer his challenge . . . Enygma vs. Joe Sexy absolutely tore the roof off the place and Enygma getting the clean pin and the title should be just the beginning of a long program between these two rising stars. MISSES: Steve Frehley vs. Andre Jones was an OK match, but the set-up just didn’t do it for me. A veteran like Frehley shouldn’t have been goaded into fighting so easily by a youngster like Jones. Should have taken the high road and walked away from their argument backstage . . . Calamari Kid vs. Pecs just didn’t do anything for me. Bland match. Both men are much better workers than what they showed. Flex running in after the match ended added nothing to this one . . . Sam Keith isn’t someone who cares what people think of him, but his backstage attack on Christian Faith made absolutely no sense. Here’s hoping he explains himself next week. . . . Black Hat Bailey vs. Brett Biggz should have been a solid match but the crowd wasn’t into it at all and their reaction seemed to negatively affect the workers. Both men have had better matches and Brett is someone who is on the rise, but this was a match neither man should want on their resume. So, the first show of 2006 is in the books and, overall, I thought it was a fairly good one, despite the fact that there were only six matches on a 90 minute show. Some seeds have been planted for the future and I am really looking forward to a long program between Enygma and Joe Sexy. Two postscripts before I sign off. The first is, because of popular demand, I am going to start posting results again, so anyone who missed the show can at least see who won and lost. Honestly, I didn’t think anyone would miss it, but my in-box got flooded with e-mails when I decided to stop posting results at the end of last year. So, starting right now, show results are back. The second postscript is this--this will be my last Hits & Misses column until the first week of February. While I didn’t mind doing so, I had to work through the Holidays and the Mrs. and I are long overdue for a vacation anyway, so I am turning this space over to Howard “The Spruce Goose” Sprules, whom many of you may remember from his late, lamented, Rumor Has It column. But fear not, as I will return in February and I plan on following “Supreme TV” while I’m gone. I also might take in a show or two while I’m on vacation, get a taste of how other promotions do things. So, enjoy Goose’s column, show him all the love and respect you show me, and know I will be back in a few weeks. Until then: Courage Lincoln “The Link” Stuart Results: SWF Supreme TV Tuesday Week 1, January 2006 The Lords of War over The Amazing Bumfholes Calamari Kid over Pecs Brett Biggz over Black Hat Bailey Steve Frehley over Andre Jones The Almighty Dollar over High Concept Enygma over Joe Sexy for the SWF North American Title

I’m back!! Some of you may remember me from Rumor Has It, my old column here at SWF.com, and some of you may be meeting me for the first time, wondering who the hell this guy thinks he is, coming in here, taking over for our beloved Link. Well, my name is Howard Sprules and I can promise you two things from our time together. The first is that you will remember my name, long after Link is back from vacation and I have moved on. And the second thing I can promise you is that the “Powers That Be” won’t soon forget me either and they’ll probably be sorry they ever asked me to fill in. They’d have been better off just leaving me sit at the house, cashing their checks and not bothering anyone. But I guess they figured they needed some sort of return on their investment, so here we are. So, bear with me for a bit as I’ve never written any sort of recap article and it might take me a week or two to get the feel of it. I’ll do the best I can, you do the best you can, and we’ll get through this.

Jack Bruce cut an amazing promo to open the show, but I have to wonder, how much of what he said was a work and how much a shoot? Despite an impressive record, Bruce has never gotten a title shot. Never. Not once in two years. I like that Bruce is taking things into his own hands, calling the champ out, but the downside is we were treated to “The Jack Bruce Treasure Hunt” as he spent the next hour and a half searching for Runaway Train.

Enforcer Roberts over “The Insider” Mark Smart It’s never a good sign when a worker doesn’t even get entrance music and someone as “inside” as Mark Smart should have realized that from the beginning. I’d like to say that the youngster at least learned something from the veteran, but the match was over too fast for that.

Good for them, getting the “Old Man” involved. The Almighty Dollar are definitely top contenders for the tag belts and deserve a title shot as much as anyone. Too bad for the fans in the Wisconsin Gardens that it got scheduled for the PPV.

The Lords of War over The Warriors of the Deep Who books this crap? Face-painted senior citizens and seafood? Right. This junk wouldn’t get over in USPW. At least it was short.

Angry Gilmore knows how to work a crowd but he seemed a bit, I don’t know, angry tonight, hyping his title match with Enygma.

Marc DuBois over Justin Sensitive It’s never a good sign when a worker doesn’t even get . . . Seems familiar somehow. At least Mr. Sensitive got in a little offense.

OK, world famous badass Sam Keith decided to sneak attack Christian Faith last week to prove he’s more badass then the former champ? Ugh! At least Keith explained his actions, which around here isn’t always a given. It could have been a lot worse; Keith could dress like an appetizer from Red Lobster.

Calamari Kid over Flex by DQ Speaking of which . . . Seriously though, would everyone who didn’t see that run-in coming please raise your hand. Anyone? Now that the Kid has “victories” over both Flex and Pecs, who wants to bet that a triple threat match gets scheduled for next week?

So, wait, Jack Bruce spent the first half of the show looking for Runaway Train and he wasn’t even at the building yet? And when he does show up, in a limo no less, Bruce is on the other side of the arena and doesn’t even notice? I know it’s billed as entertainment, but even my suspension of disbelief has limits.

Steve Frehley over Andre Jones Did we really need a sequel to their “epic” battle from last week? Still, I hear Frehley’s Comet is a sight to see live. And, you know what? It is!

Wonder what Sexual Aggression was talking about backstage like that? Could it be . . . Nah, that’s too obvious, even around here.

Texas Pete over Akima Brave At least it was short.

Enygma over Angry Gilmore by DQ I was wrong; it wasn’t too obvious. Shame Joe Sexy had to interfere, as these two were having the match of the night, but I guess it makes sense from a “storyline” point of view. I smell another triple threat match in the making.

Runaway Train over Freddie Datsun So, the champ will defend the belt against a worker like Datsun, but not Jack Bruce? Maybe he is afraid? His promo after the match didn’t do anything to change my mind either, but I did like his whole “big fish, small pond/small fish, big pond” tirade. Now that the champ has officially refused his challenge, where does Jack Bruce go from here?
Well, there we have it, my first official recap article. I just hope that the 9,233 fans at the Gardens were more entertained than I was. Before I sign off, I’d like to welcome former knitwear mogul Gil Thomas to the backstage staff here at SWF. If nothing else, we should have the best dressed workers in the business. And a hearty welcome also goes out to Reese Page, also joining us here behind the scenes.

Jack Bruce couldn’t find the champ so he took his rage out on the first worker he came across and poor Black Hat Bailey was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but I like this more aggressive Jack Bruce. The Old Man booking them in a match for later in the show should let Bruce show even more aggression.

The Underwater union over Flex and Pecs Guess I was wrong. Instead of a triple threat, Calamari Kid decided to rekindle and old friendship and take on Flex and Pecs as a team. I don’t know if that was better or worse, but the match was passable and it got the USPW rejects out of the way early in the card.

So, Jessie is getting back into the management game? Good for her and a great pop for the hometown girl. Wonder what team she’ll be debuting as clients next week?

Squeaky McClean over Jumbo Shrimp Guess McClean’s “straight edge” lifestyle doesn’t include not cheating to win a match. Good match but neither worker looked comfortable out there.

High Concept over the Hired Guns The match itself wasn’t bad, but I was really surprised that The Almighty Dollar waited until the match ended before they decided to beat down the champs.

It’s official; Runaway train is afraid of Jack Bruce. Why else would he spend time intimidating women backstage--even hot women like Ana Garcia--when he knew Jack Bruce was looking for him?

Marc DuBois over Zimmy Bumfhole DuBois is starting himself a little winning streak here, but I’m not convinced he can handle the elite competition in SWF, which is a shame since I‘ve been high on his character since his debut. It’s one thing to run through the lower card but quite another to win, and win convincingly, against guys like Enygma and Christian Faith. DuBois has a great look and presence in the ring, he connects with the crowd--even though they hate him, it‘s still a connection--and his Marc of Excellence is an er . . . , excellent finisher, but he hasn’t shown me that he can put it all together and take things to the next level.

Sam Keith over Robbie Retro I know I wouldn’t want to be put into the Proton Lock but I have no sympathy for Robbie Retro. He must dress in the dark to think he looks good in stuff that went out of style that long ago. Maybe if he shipped those clothes off to USPW--they could feud with Jim Force!--he wouldn’t get used by workers like Sam Keith looking to send a message to another worker.

Enygma over Freddie Datsun Well, Enygma is a fighting champion, I’ll give him that. I was surprised the triple threat match I predicted between Enygma and Sexual Aggression didn’t happen this week but Enygma laying down the challenge for the PPV keeps my hope alive.

Jack Bruce over Black Hat Bailey Bailey got in more offense than I expected, but this new focus Bruce has found led to an easier victory than I feel he would have gotten even three months ago. I can’t say it enough; I like this new Jack Bruce. But leave it up to the Old Man to try and get in the last word--and protect his champion--by making the Number One Contender’s match for next week Bruce versus Skull DeBones.
You may have noticed that the article this week is a good bit shorter than the first one and that was by design. I don’t mean to slight any of the talent--who put on a very enjoyable show this week, by the way--but I decided to keep things short so that I could use my allotted space to clear a few things up. My inbox was flooded with e-mails after my column went live last week and it seems I’ve touched a nerve with a lot of wrestling fans, especially USPW’s fans. (Which is surprising, since I didn’t think the parental filters would let them view this website.) Since so many people took the time to write to me with their questions and concerns, the least I could do is take the time to answer some of them. But first, a little about me. Contrary to popular opinion, I do in fact know both my mother--a hardworking lady named Martha, BTW--and my father--likewise hardworking but named Howard, like me--and I did in fact graduate from both elementary school and high school. I even attended two years of college, but didn’t earn a degree because I thought I was smarter than my professors. (Turns out I was only smarter than most of them, not all.) By then it was the early 90s and everyone with a keyboard and a modem was getting rich off the dotcom boom, so I used mine to start DeepInsideProWrestling.com. (And, yes, I know it sounds like the name of a cheesy porno.) My work there got me noticed by SWF--and bought out at a substantial profit--and I came to work here, doing my Rumor Has It column on this very website for three years. But we all saw how things turned out with that, so now here I am, filling in for Link until he gets back from vacation. Now, to answer a couple questions: 1.) No, I don’t hate pro-wrestling; I love it. I’ve loved it all my life. (Why else would I start my own website? Or take a job with a wrestling company?) But, more than anything else, I like to be entertained. Whether it’s memorable characters--not gimmicks, but characters--good wrestling or strong storylines, I like to be entertained. And, if I’m not, well isn’t it my job to tell you why? So that’s why this column may seem a little different from Link and his “Rah, Rah Rah” attitude. SWF does some stupid things and I’m not afraid to point them out. I have before, and it may have cost me a column, but I’d gladly lose another hundred columns if I thought it would make this company better. 2.) No, I don’t hate USPW. I still have a lot of friends down there from my DeepInsideProWrestling.com days. So why do I give them so much grief? Because they don’t entertain me any more. There are a ton of nice people in USPW and a lot of them are also very talented workers, but the company relies on outdated concepts and cheesy gimmicks to try to appeal to an audience that lost interest in that stuff in 1983. “Family Friendly” I can understand, but there are so many creative people in USPW that there is no way I can believe they can’t do better than the dated, cartoonish dreck they keep churning out. Until that changes, I will keep speaking my mind and let things come as they may. Well that’s enough rambling from me this week. We only have one more column together--well, two, counting the PPV--and I promise next week I’ll spend more time talking about the show and less about Howard Sprules. Also, rumor has it that there is going to be a big announcement next week, so you may want to check back for that.

There is nothing Runaway Train can do to keep from facing Bruce at the PPV tomorrow night.
With every title on the line tomorrow night it looks like our PPV card is set, but, because so many workers have unfinished business, I wouldn’t be surprised to see another match or two added before the show starts--and, of course any breaking news in that regard will be reported on the website. Speaking of unfinished business, I mentioned last week that I would have an announcement and here it is: I’m back, and I’m back for good! Seems the “Powers-That-Be” liked my work enough to offer me my old job back, so starting next week, Rumor Has It returns fulltime as a feature in the new Q&A column I have been assigned. Expect the same behind-the-scenes headlines Rumor Has It was famous for, along with a section where I answer readers’ e-mails. I look forward to the opportunity.

He gave another strong promo this week, but how is it that he only gets mic time this week and Christian faith has to wrestle a “tune-up” match ? Methinks something around here doesn’t add up.

The Lords of War over High Concept And speaking of shady dealings, the tag champs are given a non-title match before the PPV against one of the most experienced teams in the business? Face-painted senior citizens, true, but they have experience and, thanks to some timely interference from The Almighty Dollar, a win over the tag champs.

Squeeky McClean can sure talk for a long time without really saying anything, but he really knows how to get under the crowds’ skin and I am sure they’d love to see someone knock him down a peg or two.

Marc DuBois over Randy Bumfhole I heard Bumfhole demanded this rematch after their match last week. With more time to work, they put together a better match then their first encounter, but I don’t think DuBois needed to use the brass knuckles to win.

Christian Faith over Texas Pete After a good match, Faith got the victory with a “Leap of Faith”, but Texas Pete gave him quite a beating beforehand. I have to wonder if Christian Faith will be 100% for his PPV match tomorrow night?

Jack Bruce over Skull DeBones Easily the Match of the Night and, after all this time, Bruce finally earned his title shot.
