Somehow, they don't fire me, though giving me a D for the season and F in expectations. I get a shockingly good transfer class--and hit a game bug--you see I only had 9 schlorships available and just over $25,000 to recruit. I got 7 transfers--and ended up with $-9,250 per week to recruit my other 2 schlorships. In spite of having no money, a visit and an offer was enough to attract a #1200 in the nation DT. However, check out the transfers: ILB (freshman) Stephen Borden #52! in the nation, went to Ohio State, wanted more playing time, according to his parents, so he came here. 69/84 overall, but will probably leave early. #14 in the nation! Sophomore Jose Oakley (68/88) who is another standout player. WR Jimmy Barry 59/69 OG Salvador Pettit 56/70 TE Joshua Daniels 55/71 ILB William Callahan 52/73 FS Joel Batchelor 51/71 Here is the roster: We added NOTHING to THIS year's roster with this year's recruiting class, just a DT who is redshirting--but next year, the batch of transfers will create 6 or 7 new starters and then we will be something in the Big 10.
Wow! What a start to the season. We cleaned up our easy non-conf foes and then upset #20 Michigan State in their stadium! This lifted us to 5-0 (1-0) and #25 in the rankings. We then lost a close 13-10 game against 4-0 Iowa. I'm not sure why this Hoosiers team is winning when last year's didn't. We lost a lot of seniors and didn't add much. We get to 6-2 after blowing a winnable game against Northwestern--why? they aren't any good yet we lose 3 years in a row to them, but then we dismantled Illinois 37-14. We are at 6-2 (2-2) and one win away from my most succesful year ever here--though no easy teams are left on the schedule--but Michigan State isn't an easy team--that was our first win over a top #25 opponent in my tenure (7 years now). Shocking! We upset #18 Purdue after several straight losses to finish 7-5 (3-5) in the Big 10. Next year, we add a good class of transfers to an already decent squad and we should be more than just competitive. I get a B- overall, including an A in prestige (thank God) and recruiting (Huh?--are they counting transfers, or is my #1200 in the nation DT really that good?)

Next year, we add a good class of transfers to an already decent squad and we should be more than just competitive. I get a B- overall, including an A in prestige (thank God) and recruiting (Huh?--are they counting transfers, or is my #1200 in the nation DT really that good?)

Transfers: We lost a 49/62 QB to Air Force but picked up: OT Henry Anderson 63/75 OG Ron Holland 61/77 OT Jeremiah Frazier 59/74 FB John Medina 54/69 OT Ronald Erwin 53/70 QB Robert Sandoval 51/68 (and running=59) TE Ben Herrick 51/72 What does this all mean? Look at it, almost all OL stuff, or a blocking TE, or a fullback. This leads me to think that when I return to coaching the team play-by-play next year, it will be either a smashmouth or option team since the line should be quite good. This year (2012) recruiting class--again, not a bad effort:
Indiana commits

I will be coaching game-by-game this year as I think the '13 Hoosiers are going places. We lost our top 3 defensive players to either the draft or graduation, but the smashmouth offense has a tough line and we should be able to run people over with a variety of good running backs. --- Buffalo @ Indiana We start off the year with a tune-up game. We are a smashmouth offense with 4 good receivers, so it will be interesting to see where yards/points come from this year. The D is a bit shaky, but hopefully it will become something good. We are 9 point favorites over them. 1st Quarter 9:52 10 plays, 62 yards and we drive far enough to get a TD. 3rd down RB Timothy Gardner gets the short TD. 7-0 Hoosiers. The ground attack is working well so far. 1:58 QB Robert Sandoval to JUCO transfer WR Jeff Barry for a 32 yard TD. 14-0 Hoosiers. 2nd Quarter 11:38 4 star Kicker Richard Wright snaps a 28 yard kick wide right. 1:26 They get a TD off a nice drive as our offense has died down. 3rd Quarter After a strong start, the offense has died, and we need to find our running game against. 5:32 The offense is slow to come for both sides today, but we ground out a good drive and Wright nailed his attempt this time. We lead 17-7. 2:21 Sandoval to WR Ernest Williams and we finally have a good lead. 24-7 Hoosiers. We intercept them and so we will start the 4th Q at our 38. This game is finally out of reach. 4th Quarter 11:27 We are intercepted at their 12 yard line. We missed a good scoring opportunity. The defense looked good and QB Robert Sandoval played well, but the running game was pathetic. For a 27-7 win, I couldn't be much more worried. ----- Indiana @ Arkansas State We are 14 point favourites for this game and we should roll. 1st Quarter 6:01 We intercept them at our 28 to make the first big play of a dry punting affair. 2nd Quarter Our ground game is finally rolling after 1 quarter. 13:44 Unfortunate events backed us up to 3rd and Goal from the 29, but Robert Sandoval found Jeff Barry for the 29 yard TD strike. 7-0 Hoosiers. 11:30 After a 3 and out, RB George Dudley decided he wanted a quick drive. So he took off and ran 63 yards for a TD! 14-0 Hoosiers. 6:42 We nail a 45 yard FG and lead 17-0. :40 RB Martin Carr leaps into the end zone from 2 yards out and we lead 23-0 (XP no good) at halftime. 3rd Quarter 10:02 RB Timothy Gardner plows into the end zone and we lead 30-0 now! No more points--and no more problems. This game was a straight-up blowout--and we are proud--ye s quite proud of our team today. The defense did very well, and the offense was out of control. Almost 5 yards a carry on 71 attempts, plus 10/11 passing from Sandoval, and we will win many games. Notice how both the RB and the FB ran for over 100 yards.
Arkansas State: 0, Indiana: 30

Indiana (2-0) @ Middle Tennessee State (2-0) We are 10 point favorites and have better talent, but I fear a road upset against a hot Blue Raider team. A starting OT (ouch!) and RB George Dudley are out due to grades. I won't miss Dudley much, because I have 5 running backs that are 55+ rated, so I have many options, and it will be nice to spread the yardage around. RB Douglas Duncan will be the starter, but I will use a platoon unless Duncan is hot. 1st Quarter 9:00 They make a field goal and strike first. They have a star ILB and a pretty good QB, so there is some talent here. 8:00 The ground game started off slow, but QB Sandoval throws a 39 yard strike to Jeff Barry and we are in field goal range. While we are a smashmouth offense, it is nice to have a good passing game to fall back on if the ground game stalls. The 71 rated ILB is blowing up our ground game so far. 6:51 We make a 24 yard field goal to match theirs. 3 all now. 2:52 They hit a 45 yard pass which sets up another field goal for them. 6-3 Blue Raiders. 1:41 Douglas Duncan makes a great move, explodes down the sideline...and fumbles! after a 64 yard gain. What a waste. 2nd Quarter 12:10 They get to our 1 yard line, but the D turns them back and we limit them to a field goal. 9-3 Blue Raiders. Our defense needs to stop letting them get in the red zone so often. 7:49 3rd-22, but Sandoval finds his favourite target: Jeff Barry for 23 yards. Barry has made big plays every time they've been needed. 5:55 FB John Medina plows into the end zone to tie the game at 9. I had a gut feeling to go for 2, but Medina got blown up 3 yards deep in the backfield on the attempt. 1:21 We were just attempting to run out the clock before the half--however RB Matthew Richardson explodes left and gains 31 yards. We will now be attempting to score before the end of the half. :25 QB Sandoval to WR Barry for another TD! 16-9 Hoosiers. 3rd Quarter 13:58 We hold them to 3 and out, but fumble away a punt, and they take it at midfield. 9:28 We intercept them and return it to their 32. We are finally pulling away from the Raiders now. 7:25 K Richard Wright connects from 48 yards and we make it 19-9 now. 1:31 Sandoval to WR John Hughes for a TD and we lead 26-9. RB Duncan has taken dominance in this game with over 150 rushing yards. 4th Quarter 13:26 They hit a 56 yard TD pass and they aren't done yet. 26-16 Hoosiers. 8:13 Duncan leads us down the field again, and Wright makes another field goal. 29-16 Hoosiers, and that drive drained precious time. 3:07 It takes them 5 minutes, but they find the end zone, and our lead is down to 29-23. 2:47 They kick deep, but our returner runs it back to their 45 yard line, and we get great field position. Even if we have to punt, they will have to go a LONG way to win this game. 1:56 Douglas Duncan finishes them off with a 22 yard explosion off left tackle. :16 We make a field goal and lead 32-23! Duncan runs for over 200 yards today and his ability to grind it our in the 4th took too much time away from them--so he snuffed out their chance at a comeback. Also, interesting note this week, #24 Utah crushes Central Michigan 87-14!
Indiana: 32, Middle Tenn St: 23

Indiana (3-0) @ #5 Michigan (2-0) We are only 17 point underdogs, but they have WAY WAY WAY more talent and rightfully deserved to blow us out. 1st Quarter 12:33 A costly holding penalty stops their first drive and we force them to punt. 11:56 FB John Medina smashes through the Wolverine defense for a 19 yard gain to start our offense and we are near field goal range! 8:47 We convert a 40 yard field goal and we LEAD Michigan 3-0! 5:07 They get a deep pass, but our defense limits them to a field goal. 2:11 The ball's out! Fumble, and we cover at their 47. 2nd Quarter 14:11 Sandoval picked in the red zone and returned 81 yards for a TD and they lead 10-3. I got really depressed at this point and let the PC finish the sim. It was a blowout, but that was expected in all honesty.
Indiana: 13, Michigan: 41

Indiana (3-1) @ Michigan State (2-1) We are 17 point underdogs--this is a great in talent Michigan state team. We expect to lose but hope to keep it close. 1st Quarter 11:54 We force them to punt on their first possession, but it is downed at our 1. 8:21 We drive 51 yards but end up having to punt. 1:41 They get a long drive rolling but fumble at our 11 and we pick it up. 2nd Quarter 12:22 We lead after a nice ground drive and then an FG! 3-0 Hoosiers. 10:04 They respond with a big passing TD and they now lead 7-3. 5:44 We get another rushing attack rolling, but it stalls at the 33 and we settle for a 51 yard FG. 7-6 Spartans. 4:45 38 yard INT return for the Hoosiers and we lead 13-7!!! :43 They get down the field through the air, convert a 3rd-25 and then get a TD pass to lead 14-13. 3rd Quarter 300 total 1st half yards for them and they should be blowing us out. 12:48 Another quick TD for them and our defense is helpless. 21-13 Spartans. 9:16 80 yard TD pass for the Spartans and it is 28-13. They quickly get another touchdown and this game is a blowout. I hit the fast sim button and watch as the dismantling ends. The offense played alright today, pretty good actually, but we expect a LOT more from our defense.
Indiana: 16, Michigan State: 35

Northwestern (3-2) @ Indiana (3-2) A shockingly overrated NW team comes into Hoosier stadium and are large favorites despite their only slightly better talent. Their 27-24 upset over #18 Maryland got everyone's attention, but we believe we can keep this close and potentially pull the upset. Their offense is better than ours, espcially at wideout, but their defense has some holes in the secondary. 1st Quarter 12:33 Early interception ends their first drive and gives us possession in field goal range. 10:38 We get to the 8 yard line before settling for a field goal. 4:24 This time they got to our field goal range before we intercepted them. Their starting QB got injured on a sack early in this game and their backup is 3/9 with 2 interceptions so far. 2nd Quarter 10:43 A very dry game so far, but we convert their third turnover--a fumble, into a field goal. We need a TD at some point though cause their pretty good offense will score at some point. 6-0 Hoosiers. 8:09 They got their ground game going and got quickly into field goal range but their 39 yard try went right. We need some points now off the momentum. 1:56 Douglas Duncan, who had the 200 yard ground game and has been our primary back recently, is hurt moderately and we will be looking at other options in the meantime. We have no preferred option at RB at the moment as we have 5 capable RB's. We are setting up a 3rd-6 at their 43 at the moment when the injury occured. 1:50 Gain off 33 to TE Ben Herrick and we should get the last points of the half. :34 We would have liked a TD, but a short FG is good as well. 9-0 Hoosiers at the half. We lead in total yards 192-134 at the half, and we lead TOP 19 minutes to 11. We also have 80 rushing yards and are playing well. A TD would be nice though--Northwestern will get their offense going, I can guarantee it. 3rd Quarter 13:09 In the attmept to replace RB Duncan, RB George Dudley is doing best so far with 4 carries/24 yards including an 11 yard burst a moment ago. 8:57 72 yard drive for us, mostly through the ground attack, but we get only a field goal. 12-0 Hoosiers. Finish a drive! Come on offense. 5:45 They get a 27 yard pass and are in field goal range now. Is their offense awake now? 3:54 They turn the play into a short field goal try, but we still lead 12-3. We need a TD to feel comfortable, but our D is doing a great job today forcing 3 turnovers and limiting them in total yards. :34 We have launched a nice 56 yard drive over the last 3 minutes and are now at their 21. It featured one 16 yard pass and the rest is through our ground game. It is nice to be able to control the clock and ground game with a lead. 4th Quarter 14:05 We go nowhere and settle for a 38 yard try. K Richard Wright makes his 5th kick and we lead 15-3! 11:37 They go straight down the field through the air past our so-so secondary and they get a TD effortlessly. 15-10 Hoosiers now. We would LOVE a TD here but a 6th FG would also be quite helpful from this upcoming drive. 8:31 We get 2 first downs before punting. We need some defense now. 6:04 We stop them on 3rd-18 and they are forced to punt... 5:39 and FS Joel Batchelor returns the PUNT FOR A TOUCHDOWN! :) 22-10 Hoosiers now and we are up 12 in a game where we were 12 point underdogs. 4:08 They get in a 4th-22 situation on their next drive and decide to punt. FS Joel Batchelor returns this one 98 yards for a TD!!! 29-10 Hoosiers. No offensive touchdowns for the Hoosiers but we are rolling now. 32-10 is the final as K Richard Wright nails a 53 yarder with no time left after a nice 2 minute drill to end the game. The effective combo of Dudley, Duncan (before he was injured), and FB Medina, plus a couple of QB scrambles and we were difficult to stop. We also got a steady solid, unremarkable, but solid performance from the QB spot which is fine when the ground game is rolling.
Northwestern: 10, Indiana: 32
