Jones vs. Butch Reed vs. A great bout between two men who have been involved in altercations in the ring before. These two have had a feud in the St. Louis Wrestling Club as of late. This match wasn't as graceful as it was rough-housing by both men. Butch Reed got a lot of boos, because he plays a very convincing heel. Rufus R. Jones looked like the underdog in this match, but it was a pretty even match. Rufus R. Jones pulled off a minor upset, when he hit Butch Reed with the Leaping Headbutt. Winner: Rufus R. Jones Overall: C+ Bob Brown, Buzz Tyler, and Mike George vs. Dewey Robertson, Kim Duk, and Roger Kirby vs. This was a rowdy, crowded match, but I guess that is what you get when six guys are in the match. This match was action-packed, and it really got the crowd into the show. There was a lot of tags and double-team moves by both teams. The two men who seemed to have the most animosity were Bob Brown and Roger Kirby, which could mean things in the future. The announcing was great in this match, and it helped the quality of the bout. The team of Bob Brown, Buzz Tyler, and Mike George got the win, after Bob Brown nailed a Running Bulldog on Roger Kirby. Winners: Bob Brown, Buzz Tyler, and Mike George Overall: C+ Bob Sweetan vs. Jerry Brown vs. A beatdown match for 'Mr. Piledriver' Bob Sweetan. He threw Jerry Brown around the ring like a ragdoll. Bob Sweetan, a load of a man, wasn't even phased by Jerry Brown's attack, given Jerry Brown didn't put on much of an offense on the big man. But, this match was above average for a squash match, which speaks a lot for Jerry Brown. Bob Sweetan easily got the win over Jerry Brown, when he hit Brown with the Piledriver. Winner: Bob Sweetan Overall: C+ Crusher Blackwell vs. Manny Fernandez vs. Kerry Von Erich vs.vs. This was a great three-way match between three great workers, and two of them fan-favorites. Crusher Blackwell, being the only heel, got double-teamed by Kerry Von Erich and Manny Fernandez. The match had more power moves than technical spots, and it would be hard to find a spot in this match where the ring wasn't shaking. Crusher Blackwell looked like he was dominating this match, but it got turned around pretty quickly. All three men shared a bit of a lead in the match, but only one man came out on top. Kerry Von Erich got a well deserved victory in this match, when he hit a Tornado Punch on both opponents, but got the pinfall on Manny Fernandez. Winner: Kerry Von Erich Overall: B Dory Funk Jr. vs. Bob Orton Jr. vs. This wasn't as good as hyped up to be, but it was a good match nonetheless. Both men worked their butts off to put on a good match, but it didn't pan out. This was still a technical dream match, but Dory is in his prime and Bob isn't. If both these men were in their prime at the same age, this match would have been a match of the year canidate. Ironically, Dory Funk Jr. was the one showing improvement, maybe Bob Orton Jr. is a builder of older talent. Dory Funk Jr. got the victory over 'Cowboy' Bob Orton Jr., when he hit the Piledriver. Winner: Dory Funk Jr. Overall: B- Overall Rating: B-
These two didn't really click, which in turn made this match pretty mediocre. Even though they didn't click, it was still a decent match, and it was a nice match to start off a show. It was any worse than any other matches the promotion has shown, but it wasn't any better either. At least the men can put on a good enough match to get the crowd into it. Butch Reed got the pinfall victory over Dewey Robertson, after Reed hit Robertson with the Flying Shoulderblock. Winner: Butch Reed Overall: C+ Crusher Ayala vs. Bob Sweetan vs. This was a pretty quick, but impactful match by two big men. These two guys are as big as it gets in the business, and they both pack a lot of power. Bob Sweetan holding the experience advantage over Ayala really mattered in this one. These two have history with eachother in Puerto Rico for Carlos Colon's World Wrestling Cartel promotion. Bob Sweetan got the victory over Crusher Ayala, after Bob Sweetan hit the Piledriver for the three count. Winner: Bob Sweetan Overall: C+ Buzz Tyler and Bob Brown vs. Roger Kirby and Jerry Brown vs. A nice little tag team match, something that has been a staple in the St. Louis Wrestling Club lately. Buzz Tyler and Bob Brown have been working a lot together and they have started to build some chemistry. Bob Brown's old age has kept him from performing well in long matches, but this was a short, less conflicting match, which made it better for Brown. The team of Buzz Tyler and Bob Brown defeated the team of Roger Kirby and Jerry Brown, when Buzz Tyler hit a Running Powerslam on Jerry Brown. Winners: Buzz Tyler and Bob Brown Overall: C+ Mike George vs. Bob Orton Jr. vs. Another swell match on the night. A series of above average matches has taken place at this week's Wrestling at the Chase. This, just like the others, wasn't too special, but it was good nonetheless. The two men didn't work that well together, but good enough to put on a good quality fight. Bob Orton Jr. visually had the advantage over Mike George, and that could be granted to Bob Orton Jr.'s skill. 'Cowboy' Bob Orton Jr. got the well-earned victory over Mike George, when Orton Jr. hit the Superplex for the three count. Winner: Bob Orton Jr. Overall: C+ Kerry Von Erich vs. Manny Fernandez vs. This was a fantastic match, and this one was quite the match to see. It was gauranteed to be a good match and it didn't disappoint. These two mean worked their hardest to put on a good match and it payed off, as these two men showed that they are elite wrestlers in a business that is filled with amazing wrestling talent. This was a pretty long match, lasting around eighteen minutes, but these men didn't show any fatigue. Kerry Von Erich continued his winning ways in this one, when he hit Manny Fernandez with the Tornado Punch. Wrestling at the Chase Results Saturday, Week 1, February, 1983
Wrestling at the Chase Results Saturday, Week 1, February, 1983 Location: The Chase Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri Attendance: 1,000 King Kong Bundy vs. Crusher Blackwell vs. The debut match for King Kong Bundy was a good one. The battle of the giants really panned out to become a pretty decent match. The power in this match was incredible and both men really threw their weight around. Both men are heels, but that didn't phase the match. King Kong Bundy pulled of the victory in his debut, after Bundy hit Blackwell with the Avalanche. Winner: King Kong Bundy Overall: C+ Bob Sweetan vs. Butch Reed vs. Another powerhouse match-up. These two men, just like the two before, displayed a lot of power. Both of these wrestlers may have different styles, but they both have a lot of strength. Bob Sweetan couldn't keep up with Butch Reed most of the match, and that factor would come back to kill Bob Sweetan. Butch Reed got the decisive victory over Bob Sweetan, when Butch Reed hit the Top Rope Clothesline on Sweetan. Winner: Butch Reed Overall: C+ Bob Brown and Rufus R. Jones vs. Dewey Robertson and Roger Kirby vs. A well-done tag team contest that included four great competitors. This match was the most exciting match, but it had it's share of great action. This is what "Old School" wrestling is all about. The match just had the feel of what this era is about. The announcing helped the quality of the match, which seems the case every match. Bob Brown's old age got the best of him in this one, leading to his team's defeat at the hands of a Roger Kirby Piledriver on Bob Brown. Winners: Dewey Robertson and Roger Kirby Overall: C+ Manny Fernandez vs. Bob Orton Jr. vs. An above average match with two above average workers, plain and simple. These two men are no stranger to smash-mouth wrestling, but this match was full of it. This was one of the more intense matches on the card and it really showed that. These two men are great competitors and they will do anything to get a victory. Bob Orton Jr. got the victory over Manny Fernandez, when "Cowboy" Bob got hit by Fernandez's Flying Cross Chop. Winner: Manny Fernandez Overall: C+ Rick Martel vs. Kerry Von Erich vs. An unbelievably good match. This match was one of the better matches this whole company has seen. It was a great mix of a technical wrestler, Martel, and a power guy, Von Erich. This match got the crowd into it, and that really came off good on TV. This match was easily the best of the night, surpassing the rest by a lot. Both of these men worked hard to pull of a good match and try and get that victory, but only one man one. Rick Martel took the road many of Kerry Von Erich's latest opponents have taken, and that is a loss. Kerry Von Erich got the victory, when Von Erich hit Martel with the Tornado Punch. Winner: Kerry Von Erich Overall: A Overall Rating: B
