Is there a way to run down the play clock?

If I'm trying to run out the time towards the end of the game, is there a way to make sure I use the most of the play clock that I can?

The big difficulty I have is at the end of games, where the time should go to zero and I would rather let the game end but have to run a play anyway. In fact if I call "take knee" it has failed to allow me to do so. I had a game go into overtime on this. I was up seven when the game should have ended on fourth down, but since I had to run a play I kicked a fg and they blocked it and ran it back for a touchdown. I won in overtime but it was still not a pleasing experience. It also made me wonder if they would really be so brutal as to fix a game of simulation college football.

Is there some rule in college that you can't take knees on multiple plays? I've called it as well and gotten a run play out of it.
