Good show, and with back to back A rated matches at the end, I felt it deserved at-least a B+ rating, everything else was solid as well apart from the opening match and that wasn't so much the wrestlers are bad they're just not over. Well certainly in Insane Machine's case as I've previously stated before that I don't rate either of the Kelowna Playaz. I could imagine the final segment with Dan Stone Jr and Lucy Stone McFly coming across as a bit schmaltzy and some of the older/anti Sports-Entertainment fanbase crapping on that, but it did set up an interesting second main event (I count the Finals of the Ed Henson Cup as the other main event) for the Ed Henson Cup PPV, and Sean McFly certainly looks in jeopardy of losing his title...especially as he does not even have to be pinned to lose the title.
Yeah, I was a little disappointed in the rating too. As time goes by and I can build overness, I think cards like this will become B+ shows with the occasional A.
That last bit was narrative license on my part, like the opening dialogue by Tommy and Tom always is. The product just doesn't allow me to do much with anything other than overness-based angles, so when I have them hype a match, I always do it with one of the main event matches so that their overness carries the whole segment -- Tommy is rated on mic, which was good to begin with and is only getting stronger; Tom is rated on Entertainment, and that is developing nicely too. The ring entrance segments are the infamous "Walking to the Ring" segment, which is overness based, but I use it to put at least a little bit of dialogue in.

You really are putting them through the proverbial grindstone to win this cup.....anyway I'll have a go at making predictions hope I understood all the nuances of the cup right. The McWade Brothers vs Flash and Hash vs Hard Working Wild Men vs Coleman and Ferdinand I think the Wild Men have the most potential to be a threat in the tag division. Coleman and Ferdinand (with their Japanses experience) are the other main threats. Flash & Hash are just kind of there at the moment and if you have any sense the McWades will be jobbed on their way out of the door. Stone Siblings (1-0) vs. Samoan Insanity (0-1) Can-Am Blondes (1-0) vs. Flying Stones (0-1 Second Match-Up's Stone Siblings (2-0) vs Flying Stones (0-2) Can -Am Blondes (2-0) vs Samoan Insanity (0-2) Despite all the quirkly rules, my feeling is that you already have a 4-way tag match earlier in the show, also too many watches on one show is going to wear down your workers and the quality of matches will suffer for it, which I'm sure you're aware of anyway. Stone Seductresses vs Bitch Clique This feud has only just begun so logic dictates that the heels take the first match-up. Sean McFly vs Tim Westybrook vs RK Hayes vs Dark Angel vs Johnny Bloodstone You can either go one of two-ways....you can either have McFly overcome the odds and stamp his dominance as champion by seeing off 4 other challengers or you could go the other way and see it as an ideal time for McFly to drop the title, without really jobbing him out. Seeing as McFly has already had a lengthy run, I reckon you will go for option 2. So let's see your options....... Westybrook: Solid worker but not quite ready for the big belt Hayes: Plays a good bad-ass heel, but the quality of his title defences would be considerably less than the one's McFly has been giving you Dark Angel: Has had classic matches with McFly but you are having problems signing him to a new long term contract. Then again you might just give him a short-run which would see him drop it back to McFly or transition it onto another babyface champ (one of the Stones ?) Johnny Bloodstone: Knocking on the door of the main event for quite some time and had an excellent one one one title match against McFly recently, this could be Bloodstone's break out moment. EHMTTC Final Championship Match (Who makes the final match and who wins?) The Stone Siblings vs Can-Am Blondes The Blondes will stamp their dominance as the best tag team in NOTBPW by beating the Stone Siblings and going through the tournament un-beaten. The Stones have won this cup before and don't really need to be part of the tag division long term, plus this would really further legitimize the Blondes tag title run.

It felt wonderful having Kirk around for more than a few hours at a time. While many of Kirk's friends were enjoying their first college Spring Break in Cancun or Daytona Beach or some other warm location, Kirk had spent the whole week with me as we made the push to the Cup. Even though it was just Thursday, the family went straight to Montreal after the Championship Wrestling show to enjoy an uncharacteristic day off. To be honest, the rest was going to be needed, especially for my uncles who were going to have a long night ahead of them on Saturday. After a long, but leisurely run through a lovely park across the river from the collesium, we were having a light lunch at a small cafe with a beautiful view of the St. Lawrence. The March air was still pretty cold and our cheeks were flushed from the excersise, but we found a table next to a window and we were both embracing our steaming mugs of tea. Kirk tried to order in French and completely botched it -- he took German in high school and had tested out of the first-year language requirement at Saint Knud, but it didn't help him here. Mom was a Quebecer, so she taught me French at an early age and I've been a francophone wannabe ever since, even though I lived in Halifax. "So, were you ever able to take a vacation? I mean like more than a weekend?" "Oh, Mom and I would, but it was hard for Dad because he and Grandpa were always travelling. Sometimes we'd go to where Dad was wrestling, or we'd go do our own thing. Every so often when Dad was recovering from an injury we'd all go someplace, usually the States, since Dad tended not to get recognized as much. But otherwise, if Dad had time off, he wanted to spend it at home. I presume you had a more normal arrangement?" "Well, we have the cabin on Leech Lake, and the timeshare in Las Vegas. During the summer, we'd spend a lot of time at the cabin, and the condo in Vegas was a winter vacation. Of course, Vegas gets boring after a while until you're 21. Then every so often we'd do something else -- we all went to Denmark one summer when my Aunt Marie was in Saint Knud Choir and they did their Scandanavian tour. Dad actually offered to set me up with a place in Daytona Beach for Spring Break and take buddies from the football team if I wanted." At that I raised my eyebrows. "You didn't tell him you had made plans to see me?" "Yes, I had--really!" he said, the added emphasis used in response to the skeptical look on my face. "In fact, I think he made the offer in order to tempt me out of coming to see you." Wow. Getting a good place in Daytona Beach for Spring Break is an expensive proposition. "OK, that tears it. What the hell do your parents have against me?" Kirk shifted uncomfortably in his seat. A couple of times, he would start to say something, then cut himself off and stared into his cup, avoiding eye contact with me. I reached over and grasped his hand. "Kirk, you aren't getting out of this. I NEED to understand this." Kirk started to pull away, but I held onto his hand firmly and pulled him back. "It's not you, personally -- at least, I don't think it is. In their eyes, you're just getting in the way of their expectations of me." "Their expectations of you," I repeated. "Yes. I do have a family name to uphold, after all," he said with just a hint of a sarcastic sneer. "I'm sorry, Kirk, you're losing me." "I'm a third-generation Fighting Reindeer athlete. Both my parents and all of my grandparents were Saint Knud alumni. And you do know who my grandfather is, don't you?" "Um...no. You've never said anything about him, why would I?" "You mean Kris never told you? My grandfather -- Kris's great uncle -- was Ragnar Rommedahl." "As in Rommedahl Fieldhouse? The Olympic gold medal decathlete?" "Yes, the same. That's on my mom's side. Then there's Dad, who was captain of the football team in 1979 when Saint Knud won its only national championship, and was going to be the first Saint Knud football player to be drafted into the NFL except he ended up getting hurt in the winter. HIS father was on the first Saint Knud baseball team and played in the majors in the 50's. This was all over the school newspaper when the fall term started -- how did you miss this?" "Well, for one thing, the school newspaper is a piece of crap -- it's not called the Mess for nothing, you know." Actually, the school paper's proper name was The Messenger, but most folks called it the 'Mess'. Kirk laughed. "I suppose you're right -- the girl who interviewed me was going on and on like I was a celebrity. This is why I hate talking about this stuff, it sounds so goddamned stuck up and pretentious. I kinda thought you would understand that." Ouch. That stung. "I do, now. But I had no context to draw from -- I knew you were a star athlete in high school, but I never went and read your old clippings or anything like that." "I also kinda figured you'd understand the pressures of living up to your family's expectations. I mean, you're a Stone, for God's sake -- did you ever have a choice to be anything other than a wrestler?" "Yeah, I had a choice. In fact, my mom wanted me to be anything BUT a wrestler. Because of that, Dad never really did anything about 'bringing me up' in wrestling out of respect for Mom. I'm not a wrestler because Dad expected me to be a wrestler -- I'm a wrestler because I WANT to be a wrestler. I've wanted to be part of this business since I was 10 years old." "I used to feel that way about football. I wish I still did." I could tell I'd hit a very uncomfortable spot by the look in his eyes; the statement in and of itself was very revealing. I figured I'd pushed him hard enough for a while and let the conversation shift to lighter topics. Something -- or more likely someone -- had taken his childhood dream away from him, and that is the kind of thing that screws up even the most level headed of people. Realizing that helped put a number of pieces in their proper place and I was beginning to understand why Kirk was the way he was.

I'm Tommy London, sitting next to me is Tom Towsend, and tonight four elite tag teams in NOTBPW are showcased as they vie for the most coveted tag team trophy in all of professional wrestling! The Stone Siblings, Samoan Insanity, The Flying Stones, and current NOTBPW Tag Team Champions, The Can-Am Blondes -- who will survive tonight's gauntlet and come out holding the Cup?? Tom Towsend: Also tonight, Sean McFly faces what has got to be his toughest challenge as NOTBPW Heavyweight Champion when he must defend the title in a fatal five way against R.K. Hayes, Tim Westybrook, Johnny Bloodstone and Dark Angel! Any one of them would be a tough draw for McFly, but all four at once? There will be a new champ tonight, I guarantee it! Tommy London: And don't forget that we also have the women's tag grudge match as Victoria Stone and her young protege JeriLynn Stone take on the Bitch Clique, Stephanie Hazel and Emma Bitch! Tom Towsend: Finally, the tag teams that didn't qualify for the Cup final still have something to fight for other than pride -- a four way tag team elimination match with the winner getting a guaranteed Tag Title shot! Tommy London: Now, before we go any further, let's break down how the Cup final is going to work. First, the two group champions will face the runners up from the opposite group -- so our opening Cup matches will be The Stone Siblings vs. Samoan Insanity, followed by the Can-Am Blondes vs The Flying Stones. Then the two group champions will face the two runners up from their own groups -- so the next two Cup matches will be The Stone Siblings vs The Flying Stones and The Can-Am Blondes vs Samoan Insanity. At that point we'll be in one of three situations. The first scenario -- If we have two teams with two wins and two teams with two losses, then the two losing teams will face each other in a consolation match, while the two winners face off in the main event for the Cup! If we have one team with two wins and two teams with one win and one loss, then the two teams that split their matches must face off with the winner of that match going on to the main event to face the team with two wins for the Cup! And finally, if all four teams split their matches, then the main event will be a four-team single fall match with all four teams active, and the winner takes the Cup! Is all that clear, Tom? Tom Towsend: Clear as mud, Tommy, but we'll get through it somehow. Tommy London: Makes perfect sense to me, Tom, ya must have taken a few too many blows to the head, eh? Most of us agreed that the Cup was a great show. We all enjoyed a late morning Sunday. Kirk took the jet back to Saint Knud that afernoon, as Spring Break was coming to a close. The rest of the family got on a charter bus and headed west on the 401 to Toronto for the next Masters of the Squared Circle show. I was catching up on the news in my hotel room in Toronto late Monday morning. There were some interesting items out there, some of which I'd already known about. The gaping hole left in DaVE by the defection of Nemesis to TCW was to be partially filled by Shane Sneer -- only partially because Sneer wasn't being offered the DaVE book by Phil Vibert, Farrah Hesketh was. Despite the current turmoil, Dean McWade had decided to sign a PPA extension with them. SWF held their Awesome Impact pay per view event a few days before the Cup and got a 6.14 buy rate, in line with their previous pay per views. I did the math in my head and felt a twinge of jealousy at the revenue generated in that one night with inferior wrestling. Unfortunately, my attempts to get on larger PPV carriers had not been successful so far, with the standard response being that 'we wouldn't generate enough buys' to make it worth their while. Not being on PPV in the US was going to become a problem soon. It was then that my cell phone rang with Kirk's distinctive ring and I picked up to answer. Kirk was clearly upset about something, but he was talking so quickly that I couldn't even make out what he was on about. Finally I was able to calm him down a bit and get him to tell me the whole story a bit more calmly. "OK, OK Kirk, start from the beginning..." ------ Kirk was working out in the weight room of Rommedahl Fieldhouse early Monday morning. He was adding weight to the leg press machine when he was startled by an angry voice from the entrance -- "HEIDENREICH!!! MY OFFICE, NOW!!!" The few people who were in the weight room stopped what they were doing, and an eerie silence came over the room. Kirk stood there for a moment in stunned silence and thought to himself, "What the hell??" Realizing that all eyes were fixed on him, he grabbed his towel and water bottle and made his way out of the weight room and down the hall. He stopped at the last door on his right; the sign on the door read, Mike Bjornsen, Physical Education Department: Athletic Director, Head Football Coach. Kirk poked his head inside the office, cracked a grin and said, "You haven't yelled at me like that since two-a-days, Coach -- what's got you all riled up?" "Sit down." The dark look on the coach's face told Kirk that his attempt to lighten the mood failed miserably. Kirk tossed his towel across the seat of one of the chairs facing the desk and lowered himself into it. Coach Bjornsen tossed a copy of the sports section of the previous day's Twin Cities Press-Tribune on the desk towards Kirk. Highlighted was the 'Rebound' column, the part of the sports section that dealt with rumors and "insider" information about local athletes and sport personalities.
The Rebound Charley Hartman and Sid Walters Brandon Smith, the former Minnesota Tech tight end whose dreams of playing professional football were dashed due to a knee injury sustained in the 2005 Pomegranite Bowl against Eastern Utah University, will debut on GNN Total Sports' Championship Wrestling show Wednesday night at 9pm. Smith, who earned the nickname "Bulldozer" on account of his ability to run over opposing linebackers, will use the moniker for his in-ring persona. He signed a one-year contract with North of the Border Professional Wrestling last week. Don't Print That Now, you may not realize it, but NOTBPW has more Minnesota connections than just Smith; in fact, Smith mentioned in a recent interview that he saw another Minnesota football star, Saint Knud freshman sensation Kirk Heidenreich, backstage at a NOTBPW Championship Wrestling show in Toronto earlier this month. Heidenreich currently dates NOTBPW wrestler (and granddaughter of owner Dan Stone Sr.) JeriLynn Stone, herself a Saint Knud alumni.
Kirk's eyes narrowed as he skimmed the article. When he looked up, he saw Coach Bjornsen glaring at him. "Explain to me how you were seen in Toronto in the middle of the week during school?!?" "I flew up there and back in JeriLynn's grandpa's company jet. I've been doing it two to three times a month since J-term. So what? I haven't missed a class yet." "I need a straight answer from you -- are you actually wrestling for NOTBPW?" "Why does that even matter?" "I'll take that as a yes. Damnit Kirk, you're here to go to school, not jetset across the country! Do you realize how much trouble you can get into?" "Coach, have I ever missed a mandatory workout or team meeting? No, I haven't. You get my academic progress reports, so you know I'm pulling a solid 3.0, which is more than can be said for half the starting defense. What exactly am I in trouble for?" "Oh, I don't know, how about putting your eligibility in jeapordy, for one?" "The rules say I can't commit to play professional athletics. Professional wrestling doesn't fall under that definition, as it's not a competition." "You're still using your athletic skill for payment!" "I'm not getting paid." Coach Bjornsen's eyes widened; apparently that was not the response he was expecting. "What do you mean you're not getting paid?" "Just what I said, I'm not getting paid. Any compensation that I would receive is being donated to NOTBPW's charity partners until such time as I no longer need to maintian my amateur status. That was one of the first things I worked out with Mr. Stone. You know, I WAS recruited by Division I schools, coach. They told me ALL the ways to get around that kind of stuff if that was what I needed to sign with them." "You idiot! The reason Division I schools can pull crap like that is because they have the lawyers to make those cases! Athletics are a revenue stream for the big schools, not for us! This is the kind of situation the national board thrives on, it lets them look like they take this stuff seriously! Saint Knud won't commit the resources to defend this!" "And if it came down to that, you know there would be at least one prominent attorney that would represent the school pro bono." Coach Bjornsen glowered for a moment, conceding the point. "OK, smart guy, what happens if you get injured?" "Oh, you mean like Jake Larson did when he broke his leg playing a pick-up broomball game? At least the NOTBPW stars are professionals who know how to do what they do safely!" "Regardless, Kirk, you can't continue to do this, I won't allow it!" "Won't allow it? And what precisely will you do if I refuse? Throw me off the team? We both know why you won't do that. You know just how weak that defense is without me in the middle. And you can't afford to piss off the single largest alumni booster this school has." "Ah yes -- I'm sure he'll be THRILLED when he reads this. Did you forget that your father and I were classmates? You think he'll cause trouble for me?" "He's not the one you have to worry about. Don't you think Charley and Sid would take my call? THAT would be an interesting conversation now, wouldn't it? Perhaps I'll invite them to the NOTBPW house show down Friday night in Rochester at the War Memorial Auditorium and let them see for themselves. Perhaps I'd even give some insight into the biggest question of all -- why would Kirk Heidenreich turn down full ride scholarships to a dozen top football programs to go to Saint Knud?" The two men stared at each other for a moment. Coach Bjornsen broke the silence first; "You're playing a dangerous game, young man. You're gambling your future, over a girl, of all things." "I have less to lose and more to gain than any of you. For the first time in years, I actually have a choice about my future."

Whoa (doing my best Keanu Reeves impression), You know, of all the high-quality writing you done in this here dynasty, your latest post, for whatever reason, is my favorite thus far. I couldn't really tell you exactly why...it was just very, very well done! Some excellent writing there; end of story. P.S. I meant to post about this before...since when has A.C. Tarus been an "insensitive clod"? LOL :p

I had Westybrook dead to rights and the ref is supposed to stay with me watching for the submission. But when Sean calls, what does the ref do? He runs over to him to count the pinfall and stopped watching Westybrook, who was tapping out before McFly got the pin! I've looked at that tape too and the ref's call is wrong -- I was robbed of my Heavyweight Championship." Head referee Clarence Garcia doesn't see it that way. "NOTBPW matches are called straight down the middle, regardless of who is in the ring. I understand that Johnny is upset and disagrees with my call, but it is not his place to question my ruling. Furthermore, his actions after the match were entirely uncalled for." While that may be true, Bloodstone's actions did get the attention of the Executive Committee, who quickly convened on Sunday afternoon to determine a course of action. OOC: Ugh. My sincerest apologies, folks. Work has completely swamped me -- October is the last month of the fiscal year and things have just gone crazy. I haven't even been able to put a show together on the weekends, which is my usual fallback position. Hell, this is the first time I've even logged in for the past two weeks. I do see edges of light on the horizon, but it will be at least four to six weeks before things in real life start to slow down in anticipation of the holidays. If I get lucky enough to get a window of opportunitiy, I'll get a show put together -- I have all the notes I need and the actual game is well ahead of the diary. That being said, I can make no promises until at least November. In the meantime, consider this the obligatory "I'm not dead yet" post. We'll see you in a while. 'Banger

I flew out of Vancouver on the redeye to Minneapolis after the Championship Wrestling show Wednesday night; I had school business to attend to with my academic advisor (and practicum professor) Thursday and then Kirk and I would head to Philly for a Mat Masters show together. Saint Knud would be on Easter break Friday through Monday and Kirk and I would be able to spend some time together before Kirk really had to bear down on his upcoming finals. There's a neat little coffeehouse in town called Goodbye Blue Friday's that I'd spent many an evening studying at when I needed to get off campus for one reason or another, and Kirk and I were lounging on a cushy couch in the corner, sipping on smoothies and cathcing up on stuff. "So has Coach given you any more grief this week?" "No, he's given me the cold shoulder since then -- he's stuck between a rock and a hard place really, about the only thing he can do is talk to my parents and get them to make me shape up." "You don't think he's going to?" "Oh, I know he will, but he has to find them first, and even when he does, they won't be able to do much about it for a while." "How come?" "They're both too busy right now with work. Pissed off as they'll be when Coach does get hold of them, I won't hear from them for at least a couple of weeks." "That doesn't really sound like them, at least from what you've told me. What do your parents do, anyway?" "Mom is a big shot lawyer. She's had the textbook career, too; clerked at the Supreme Court, was an assistant DA for a while, then was fast-tracked to partner at her firm, Underwood, Gunderson and Howe. Supposedly she's being prepped to run for Attorney General in a couple of years." "And your father?" "Dad is a divisional VP of Sales at 4M. He's been there pretty much since he got out of college and has worked his way up from the bottom, though he's certainly had help along the way. There are more than a few Saint Knud alumni in the upper ranks of the company and Dad milked his big man on campus rep for all it was worth to get him all the right jobs at the right time." "Impressive careers, though it doesn't sound like they were around much." "Mom was around more before she got this last job, and Dad, at least, was always around for my games. You can tell that we never wanted for much -- of course that meant they never really cared where I got scholarships to, they'd told me they'd prepaid my four years of tuition at Saint Knud before I'd even thought about where I wanted to go to school." "Really? What if you hadn't wanted to come here?" Kirk face darkened, and he averted his eyes so as not to meet my gaze. A second later, he looked up at me and said flatly, "To be honest, I didn't want to come here." My eyes grew wide. "That's the dirty secret. I actually wanted to go to MinnTech. Mom and Dad wouldn't let recruiters come visit me, but they knew the MinnTech football camp is one of the best in the nation, so they let me go there during the summers in high school. That's when the coaching staff had their opportunity to talk to me and I'd given them a verbal committment after my junior year, but Mom and Dad wouldn't sign the release forms for my scholarship applications. So once that made the news, I got offers from all over the place, but since I was still a minor, I couldn't do anything without Mom and Dad's support. And even if I sat out a year and went when I was an adult, Mom and Dad would have essentially disowned me. So here I am, with no hope of getting noticed by pro scouts, no matter what Dad says, and even if they did, with this level of competition I won't develop the level of skill I should in order to stand out in the draft. It was more important to my parents that I continue the Heidenreich legacy at Saint Knud than it was for me to become a professional athlete..." For a brief moment, his voice faltered, and it seemed like he was fighting to maintain control of a number of different emotions. "...so there you have it." I was floored at the revelation. It certainly helped explain the more messed up aspects of Kirk's personality. It also helped me understand why Kirk reacted the way he did when we fought -- he was deathly afraid of losing the one relationship that was truly his. "...wow. I don't know what to say -- I just don't get it." "That makes two of us. But I will say this -- as much as I resented having to come to Saint Knud, I'm glad I did, because otherwise you wouldn't have become part of my life and I wouldn't have even entertained the thought that I could possibly be a wrestler. Things happen for a reason, whether it's God or karma or Fate or whatever." A warm feeling came over me and I smiled. I leaned over and snuggled into Kirk's chest and we snuggled there for a few minutes -- I was getting better at figuring out when Kirk had said as much as he was going to say and when not to prod and ruin the moment. His embrace was strong and protective, yet gentle. After a few moments of silence, I asked quietly, "So what do you want to do after the show tomorrow?" "I would actually like to come back home. No one will be around so I can have some peace and quiet." "Oh?" "Yeah, like I was starting to say earlier, Mom has a big civil case she's working in Chicago, and she's staying there full time since Dad isn't around. Dad is travelling on business -- he's in Germany this week, then goes to South Africa next week, and Japan the week after before he comes back home..." All of a sudden, Kirk got what can only be described as an evil grin. "Come home with me for the weekend." "Seriously?" "Why not? I'm feeling a bit rebellious and it will drive them crazy to know we were in the house together alone..." I glared at Kirk. "What? I'm not suggesting we snoo snoo in their bed or anything like that, just let them think that we..." I scowled. "...I'm not helping my case here, am I?" I nodded slowly. "OK, OK, no more innuendo. But I am serious about you coming to the house. I'd like you to see where I grew up and have you meet some of the more normal folks in my family." This was a first, and an important one -- Kirk was opening up more and more and I knew I needed to respond in kind. "I'll call Aunt Vickie tomorrow morning and ask her to run the Monday show. That way once we come back here we don't have to leave until Wendesday for Montreal and then come back here for the show a week from tomorrow." "Sounds like a plan to me."

In its original conception, Mat Masters Tour was intended to function as a mid-level show -- more prestigious than a house show, but less so than a TV show. It also gave us a platform to try different combinations in areas where we were less over so that if things didn't work as well as we liked, we had less risk of damanging our roster's overall momentum and popularity. While that's still true, as we execute our overall plan for growth, the Mat Masters Tour takes on a new purpose -- to help build our overness in areas we need to build up -- specifically, the US. We shelved Mat Masters temporarily while we got used to the second TV show schedule, and now we'll use the Mat Masters Tour as a third show to accelerate our efforts in building popularity in the US. Sitting down with Aunt Vickie and Grandpa, we chose to focus our effort on the East Coast and the Midwest as our initial US touring base, and as a result we scheduled the next Mat Masters show in Philadelphia at Pennsylvania Park. Perhaps the word that best describes Westfield, Minnesota is "quaint". From its meticulously preserved historic downtown to the pristine shores of Cannon Lake on the town's southern edge to the precisely manicured lawns that its Victorian houses stand on, Westfield is something out of a novel in the heart of central Minnesota. As I sat in the passenger seat of Kirk's red and white Ford Shelby GT500 I could feel the heads turning as we made our way down the streets during my grand tour of his hometown. Coming from a well-to-do family myself, I wasn't necessarily overwhelmed by Kirk's home along the lakeshore about two miles out of town, but I was impressed nonetheless. The two-story country farmhouse had a huge covered wrap-around front porch that looked out over five acres of landscaped yard on one side and the crystal blue lake on the other -- a truly beautiful setting. The house was spacious, almost empty feeling in some ways, typical of the 'empty nest' that Kirk's departure to college marked for his parents. Tributes to Kirk's athletic exploits were prominently displayed throughout the house; framed clippings, photographs, trophies, ribbons and medals could be found in almost every room on the walls or shelves. One notable exception to this was the den, where Kirk's father maintained his home office; this was Kirk's father's domain, decorated in the green and gold colors of Saint Knud, and the pictures and trophies displayed here were of another era, yet similar in the ebulliant praise for their subject and his athletic prowess. A picture of Kirk's father in his college football uniform bore an uncanny resemblence to Kirk himself. True to his word, Kirk's primary goal for his break was to relax -- the weekend was for most parts a quiet one; the only school work Kirk did was his reading of Dante's Inferno for his Great Books course. I had been in the same course as a frosh and was able to help him with some of the tougher themes and ideas I knew the prof would be looking for in his upcoming essays and exams. I was happy enough to take some mental downtime myself and just spend time with Kirk. We did take a trip back into town on Saturday evening; hanging out at the local Sonic we ran into a number of folks that we either both knew from college or were intoduced to me as Kirk's childhood friends that went other places, like the local community college. It took me somewhat by surpise how many adults came and greeted Kirk -- he practically had local hero status, which in a sense stood to reason given his accomplishments. One of Kirk's well-wishers recognized me, though he couldn't place just where he'd seen me -- I gave him the 'I get that all the time' line and Kirk and I shared a laugh after he'd left. We made our way back to the house, watched a couple of movies in the rec room, and the rest you'll have to leave to your imagination. Sunday morning was a lazy one; after sleeping in, I wandered down to the kitchen, made coffee and fired up the laptop to catch up on news. Not a whole lot of note going on, really. Farrah Hesketh in her first show as DAVE booker had Travis Century win the Brass Knuckles title from Jack Giedroyc, which struck me as a bold, but strange move -- Jack was builing up a good run with that title and it seemed a bit soon to take it off him. Personally I would love to have him on the roster, but he's on written contract and I am avoiding open hostilities with everyone at the moment, so I won't push the matter. That being said, there is a DAVE star who is coming up on renewal for his contract and I have a call into him. The contract expiration of Danny Cavanagh was reported by Pro Wrestling Hits, but the few comments linked to the article were apathetic, which I took as a positive sign. I wandered through the house looking for Kirk, discovering him at his father's desk, reading from a stack of papers Kirk had put there. "Do you usually read your father's papers?" "Nope, most of the time they're locked up in his credenza, but he must figure with me out of the house it's not worth the effort." "You know, I'm not sure you should be going through his stuff like that." "I have my reasons -- " "Not the point, really. Are you looking for something in particular?" "Actually, I am. The Mess had an article that stated that Dad was being considered to be appointed a Trustee." "OK -- So what?" "Well, for one thing it would mean he'd be on campus more often, which would make it harder for me to get away overnight." Kirk set the paper he was reading down and grabbed the next folder on the stack. "For another thing, while Dad has always been a huge alumni athletic booster, outside of the occasional fundraising dinner, he hasn't really paid much attention to any other parts of the school. It just seems wierd that he's doing this." "I don't know, Trusteeships are as much bought as anything, so it's not that strange, is it?" He picked up a folder from the stack and held it out to me. "OK, take a look at this." I took the folder from Kirk and opened it up. The cover sheet of the report in the folder was on Saint Knud letterhead and had the title Capital Campaign: Heidenreich Stadium. "Heidenreich Stadium?" "Look at the next part." Flipping to the next page, I noticed right away the letterhead changed from Saint Knud to 4M, the company Kirk's dad worked for. A quick glance through the next few pages revealed that 4M was bidding for the rights to build the new stadium on the Saint Knud campus, and had specifications already worked out for a modern 10,000 seat multi-sport outdoor venue at a cost of 75 million dollars. "Well, this would explain why your dad wants to be a Trustee, if nothing else. Though it's a huge conflict of interest, and wouldn't fly in most business scenarios, he could probably get this through as a Trustee, with promises to subcontract bits and pieces of the project to other Trustee's business interests." "And it's way bigger than is necessary -- 10,000 seats? Thats three times the size of the school! I mean sure our games were sold out and overflowing, but a 10,000 seat stadium seems like overkill." My eyes lit up. "Oh. my. God. It all makes sense." "What does?" "You. This whole thing hinges on you." "Me? How?" "He's using you to justify the size of the project. You're his draw. He's using you like I use Dad or Uncle Dan or Cliff or RK to put butts in seats." "But I'm only here for four years, what happens after that?" "Once the stadium with his name on it is built and he has his seat on the Trustee board and gets a huge payoff at work for bringing in this project, he probably doesn't care. But your being at Saint Knud is a recruiting tool for the next three incoming classes, and a fancy new stadium will help as well. Remember all the media attention you got by going to Saint Knud? That was all free publicity as far as the football program was concerned. It brought way more people to the football games; they were well attended the past couple of years, but not like it's been this year, and they'll use those attendence numbers to make the case for this size of stadium." Kirk sat there in his father's chair for a moment, processing all the information he had discovered. Slowly, his face darkened. "That a**hole," he muttered flatly. I could sense the rush of emotions thrashing inside of him, and tensed up myself, wondering if I should step back or not. Then, without warning, Kirk stood up. "Babe, I need your help." "What are you going to do?" "I'll tell you what I'm NOT going to do -- I'm not going to be anyone's tool anymore."
