  1. So much this! I just can't believe that every single tester legitimately liked the UI and nobody complained about it. If that's the case, they're horrible testers and shouldn't be picked to fill this role for any other game in the future. On the other hand, I also can't believe that Adam really thought the UI would be received positively by the players, irrespective of the feedback he got.

This is the worst user interface I've ever seen in a game that costs more than 5 bucks. Plain and simple. I've seen better user interfaces in trash games from 20 years ago.

My guess is that perhaps they assumed it was temporary and no one ever asked. That's the only other way this could've happened lol

  2. Honestly, I don't watch every week and I'm certainly not taking notes! But I remember squashes from Nyla Rose, Hager, PAC, etc. I went to their site and clicked a random show from November where Cody squashes Matt Knicks. My point is -- the squash match hasn't gone out of style just because AEW also books long matches and is still a completely viable way or getting people over and/or keeping them on-screen. I don't want to derail this convo, though, so no more AEW posts from me!

Yeah, you're right there's been a few. I see what you're saying, I misunderstood and thought you were thinking it was an AEW staple. Yeah man, of course my bad!

EDIT: I still use squash matches regularly in-game for my slow build pushes. Simple but effective and gets a potentially flawed character easy tv time on a weekly basis.

  3. A thing I just found is that long reigning SWF announcer Duane Fry came out as a homosexual, and the locker room reacted a lot better than a lot of people thought they would!

As a member of the LGBT community myself, this warmed my heart when I found out. Yay SWF!

Appreciate you making this point. Most of us non-gay wrestling fans don't get to hear what you guys think. If new ideas get little reaction, we are less likely to see more of it in the future and it's not something most of us will even consider being a game without a typecast to relate to as most nationalities are now covered and the females are getting their due.

  4. I was really looking forward to both play and mod this game (and had big plans for both) and really wanted to like it. But my initial reaction is that I won't be doing either.

Now don't get me wrong, there's a lot of new additions and features that I really like (like attributes and expanded stable mechanics) - but not all of them are implemented well, and some feel like a step back.

Some main points of concern for me:

    - The game doesn't look or feel like a game from 2020. The graphics are the same as since I first began playing TEW (think it was 2008) and the UI seems like a horrible downgrade at first impressions. Getting used to the new UI will probably help somewhat, but... wow.

    - While the game has many improvements, the leap forward doesn't feel like the 4 years that went by between releases. I see more additions in game series that has yearly released, frankly.

    - Some "must have" new features (to me) are missing. First and foremost, trios (yes, they mean that much to me). Mexico simply isn't represented properly without them. Why add new game areas (such as India) before fixing those that are already in?

    - Modding is still not very user friendly considering they are a big part of the game. Sure, there have been some improvements - but I can't believe that creating title histories is still such a nasty chore. And how come I can't even use my mouse wheel or arrow keys to scroll through tables in the editor? No sliders for skills?

I will follow the game in the hopes that it will be improved in the coming months though. Because as I said: I really want to like it.

Exact same attitude as me. No shame in being a loyal fan and having hopes of not being let down if you haven't had much evidence in the past to alert the spider senses. Grey Dog have always had pride in their work and relationship with it's community.

  5. Quick question how come when creating a company now you cant make your own style instead of using a already made preset style of a company. For example the match ratio to promo ratio sliders has been removed is there a reason? Thanks

This has been answered a few times, probably only a few pages back man! I believe it was to do with the presets having the only products that really made a difference to the ratings and company growth and whatnot and it was cutting of the fat with Adam assuming it was a niche mechanic not many people used if I remember.

  6. I think doing this could actually hurt a guy's personality in TEW -- make them egotistical, etc -- so there was SOME penalty. Good analysis overall, though. I really like the new system.

Hmm. AEW has squashes, like, every week? Brodie Lee? Wardlow? Out there squashing dudes. New Japan functions a bit differently with the young lion system (so new guys become known through that) and by incorporating lesser known people into six/eight-man tag matches. I think both styles are viable.

I will say I think maybe the penalties for overuse you're experiencing could be toned down, although I haven't seen them myself. I don't think those really illustrate flaws in the Perception system, though. Also, I generally think players need to become more comfortable with getting penalties.

Has that not been since they were working with a limited roster? I don't remember seeing a squash until Wardlow's second match which wasn't that long ago, aside from maybe a few Awesome Kong matches from October/November. Could be wrong, my short term month-to-month memory is pretty bad.

  7. The push system had been around since the beginning. I understand why people are mad but it seems Adam has really made an attempt to cut a piece of fat that was literally unnecessary not to automate. I understand why some people may miss it and I understand why some people think we can have both systems, but now it seems like we will have more breakout stars as everything will be running off of stat maths and not what we think is how things would go down. In my opinion, having favorites to push can make every save feel samey and a streamlined system may be what I need to stop from repeating myself in-game by using winning formulas instinctively and an ability to turn the old system back on would negate everything I've just tried to explain because we all obviously hate change. I'm going to wait until I can play a full first year twice to give my full thoughts.
  8. I barely see anyone complaining about bugs and crashes. People seem to be pretty much on board with the idea the idea that we are helping test the game before the launch, including me.

The complaints I see are warranted concerns about the UI, product system, and quality of life changes. Here’s hoping Adam sees those criticisms.

There's no chance he didn't. That was probably the most vicious first 10-20 pages of a GDS launch I've been apart of haha

  9. I might make another more thorough and well thought out criticism post later, but for now I think this will suffice: This game is far from complete.

Plain and simple, the game isn't done.

People keep saying "oh, well it's a Public Beta"

Yeah, sure. But this plays more like an Early Access game on Steam, not a game that's getting a Full Release in ONE WEEK. In all honesty the game should be pushed back until it's worth paying $35 for. I'm very tempted to avoid this game like the plague for who knows how long and stick with 2016. It's a shame, because I can see flashes of brilliance hiding in 2020, but overall the entire game feels and plays like Great Ideas with Poor Execution.

Whether you or I think it should be pushed back or not (and I do I think), the fact of the matter is that you can put your $35 down when you believe the game is up to your standards. That's the beauty of an open market! Keep tuned to the patch notes! Adam was begged to put this out early due to Covid-19 and know he is receiving criticism heavier than ever before for not doing anything different to how every past release I remember has gone. I will be dropping my $35 I've got put back on it and not be starting a save until the community believes everything is up to a standard. I was one of the people mentioned earlier who freaked the hell out when I booted up WMMA5 for the first time so I have faith.

  10. Updated skins help but don't solve the bigger issue of the spatial allocations on the main screens.

On the roster page, I don't really get why there's such a big space between the stats and their corresponding values. Same with the popularity table. There's so much information on one page, but there's enormous slabs of wasted real estate. Stats and pop are the most important things for us to see on a worker, but it's partly hidden in favour of... blank space.

EDIT: Second point removed as I was looking in the wrong place. Thankyou Teemu, appreciated.

The numpad layout of buttons has gotta go. My eyes can't dart from button to button that fast when there is a whole left side trying to draw my eyes away. Maybe category rows or just a much more visually ergonomic spacing and font. Does anybody know the extent of a button layout switch out would be?

I don't like the character stat page layout either but I feel like it will grow on me over time. Just needs some refining. The actual number of the stat itself is hard to read while keeping your eyes on the same line as whatever stat the number is for. No one should expect a new design to feel automated but this one is obviously pushing players away fast so I really can't call it an adjustment period.

  11. There is one other thing i noticed. My eyes hurt when playing the game, i did not have this in TEW 2016. Especially if i am playing for a couple of hours.

I am not sure why, maybe this is due to the data on one screen or because the text is small? Does anyone else have this issue?

I'm hoping it was just a technical rendering error due to the bigger resolution. Perhaps Adam is using a specialty sized monitor for development and wasn't even aware due to lack of closed beta complaints. I'm sure he will let us know in time.

  12. I think Adam should move the release date to late May/whenever because this game isn't finished.

I have ADHD, and this game hurts to play. It feels like no effort went into organizing or optimizing screens at all. Every aspect of the UI is awful, numbers and text use ridiculously garish colors for no reason, values that were already needlessly large (what does 67 Aerial mean compared to 68 Aerial?) are now even larger and less intuitive thanks to them being sometimes displayed in ranges rather than an absolute value or, God forbid, a grade. Even when they are absolute values, the color coding system is painful and barely readable, because it doesn't use nice modern desaturated colors. It's actually harder for me to compare grades because of the extra mental load of the bright colors on top of numbers. It reminds me of old school Dwarf Fortress and I don't mean that as a compliment.

Random text flourishes sidle amidst the ballroom of cluttered information, serving no purpose other than to dance warmth into the cold abyss.

"Does not currently hold any titles or positions of power." Great! Who cares!

"Has been with the company 6 years" A brilliant haiku of refuse placed atop the rabble's desired information, I say.

I learned how to fly an A-10 and at no point did I have to contend with 40 buttons on a single panel like there is in the Office section of the game. They aren't even ordered by function. Top 100s right next to Owner Goals? Why not?

As some people worried, the new product system is mystical and esoteric while also being restrictive and punishing for those who are not blessed with the knowledge of its wants and needs (you know, most players). I have more to say but this is tiring and I'm gonna take a break. Maybe I'll post other stuff later. Yes, there are improvements here and there but this is ridiculously not up to par, and I've played Football Manager. *shiver*

I agree. He'll make a lot more money and his reputation won't drop but actually increase if this manages to get smoothed over. Maybe someone make a friendly petition for people to sign? Not sure if that is considered offensive outside of New Zealand or not lol

  13. This is a beta test. The game will be more polished as updates come out. I'm not going to buy it right now but once I hear that the major issues (mainly the quality of life stuff involving being able to use the keyboard more ... and being able to adjust autobooker angle times so that they aren't all 15 minutes by default) are updated I will be very excited to hand over my money.

Super late on this reply but thanks for backing me up, I was not in a good mood at all when trying to explain my point and that really doesn't look good on anyone. Apologies to him, I was agreeing with most points until I was told I don't know anything about how a developer I've been buying from and following for about 15 years without a change in command runs his business model. It doesn't matter what a consumer is used to, if a developer calls it a public beta then it's a public beta. Doesn't matter if it was six months ago or this week, this is the information collected that Adam will use to perfect the gold release. Just because this is a trial does not mean that this will be how the final product looks after patches to come over the next few weeks, which in turn also updates the trial client. He had called the current version of the trial a "faux beta" when in fact, the public beta would be a faux trial under definitions. The whole idea of the trial is merely copywrite protection for people to sample the game after the public beta is over, the word trial doesn't make it what the AAA+ even AA+ community call a trial. It's more so nobody has to go back and re-edit all the wording of the website next week after they go gold I think? As it says Public Beta on the client itself where it would usually say Trial post-release. The game is going to be (and has already) changed and Adam wants our critique, hence this thread.

It's not like this was kickstarted, Adam builds these games while using proceeds from last years' release to fund his expenses and once loyal customers who want the independent product as early as possible when it comes to a running build drop their dollar, he continues on working for months before the patches slow. Sorry for the rant lol, things just aren't always so cut and dry. Have patience, friends! GDS have always written their annual key gameplay mechanic coding first and then rushed the UI in time for release, gone back and fixed the errors and then finished what complaints are left. We were all begging for this to be released during Corona season, we haven't even got it yet and we're acting spoiled. Including me! I'm not innocent at all, however there is a certain way to go about public beta critique without being an asshole you know? There's a reason this is the only true game of it's kind to stand the test of time and that's because of the way this multiple patch roll-out works. It's not like the majority of us are downloading this on Steam as a pre-release blindly only for a developer to just go quiet, we've been reading and following the live updates and have a clear inside scoop of the making of these games and what the priorities are and when. I'll be dropping my money next week just to support the developer despite having issues with the UI because Adam would be stupid not to make an effort to please. A big percentage of people find this game via online and real life word of mouth and not from advertisements so he loses a lot of money if he gets lazy now.

EDIT: I'm sorry if I'm wrong on any of this, this is just my understanding as someone who has purchased a handful of previous GDS releases on day #1 in the past. Forum members have always seemed to have empathy and understanding for Adams' position in creating such a niche genre of game set in another niche that is wrestling. Things seemed to of calmed down again now and I'm sorry again if this escalates it further.

  14. This is, if anything, a pseudo beta because there's not nearly enough time to fix major problems that might come up in this time. I know this is what it's called like officially and game developers have started to do this in recent years, but it's completely different from what a beta was originally supposed to be.

Anyway, that wasn't the main part of my post. The main part was that Adam is not going to be able to change anything significant about the user interface within one week.

So I'm not incredibly wrong because your definitions are outdated, am I?

  15. I'm a fullstack software developer. I don't write games, but I'm constantly programming user interfaces. It's very obvious that you don't know what you're talking about.

Games don't work the same way as other media. You are describing what is now known as the alpha phase in video games, which was all done in-house. A short beta was introduced a month or two ago. This is the first public release and we have now officially entered Beta, which will last for one week. After full release, Adam will use information gathered from the one week public Beta phase for the patches. You can't go around acting so confident when the title of the thread says beta and the thread was started by the games' sole developer who you've now decided doesn't know what a beta is as a consumer of his product... Games haven't been complete on release for years now whether you're mad at it or not and nobodies asking for all this work to be completed in a week.

  16. This is incredibly wrong. The beta test is already over, this is a trial version of how the game will pretty much look like in a week. Adam will surely fix most of the bugs that people who are playing the game right now are running into, but it's safe to say that there won't be massive changes to the UI until the final release - because visuals aren't easy to fix. Designing and programming good user interfaces is not a trivial task and it's certainly not done within a week.

    What games have you developed?

  17. A quick post, just to try to help people understand what people like myself mean when we say we dont like the UI (not that I've said that yet but I am now lol)

When we say we can't look at it, gives us headaches etc. That's not an over reaction, that's not "its ugly" that's not just us being difficult. For people like myself its LITERALLY it is giving me migraines due to the look of it. I couldn't tell you why, but 10mins into it yesterday I had to look away. I went back later, same. I ended up getting no sleep as I tried to just keep going to explore c-verse and got a migraine which kept me up.

When I use excel at work I have to zoom to 120-130%, I use word on size 14, have internet zoomed slightly etc. Squiniting at standard sized numbers isn't something that i can adjust to, or just take a little time and itll be ok. I just cant do it

On top of that I'm colour blind, colours looked good when they were on big D+ symbols or big bold numbers, but little numbers in a line with dozens of other numbers means my head just hurt.

So I get some like it, or think others are over reacting, but also remember some of us are legit struggling to actually play it, and for people like me it would make it unplayable. That's not "its ugly screw you" its "this game will put me in hospital" lol

Side note, some did a quick edit with white lines removed and another person with some dark red mixed in. I know it was only stills but that seemed to help a lot.

Now, on a none-migrain related note I'll just say the UI just seems less fun. I know what I spent my time doing was just putting random numbers against other random numbers to generate a number, but something about this set up just seems to emphasise that. It just feels like a less fun experience overall, I want to get lost in s colourful game world where I'm booking a wrestljbv show, not study maths to get the best outcome. I know ultimately that is what I'm doing but the game just feels....cold? Is that just me?

That's my UI thoughts anyway, I miss big and colourful, I dont care if that meant more clicks, clicking never bothered me, especially now windows are easier to get out of or click back.

yeah, if 50% of the games playerbase are claiming literal headaches and they're all saying they're not exaggerating, somethings gone wrong. perhaps adam is like myself and isn't effected by screen headaches and wasn't even aware of the issue.

  18. Yes and No. EWR was a free game so it gets a pass for being ugly. But come on, TEW is a commercial game, we are paying for the privilege of playing it. I expect more from a UI than a fancy looking Microsoft Access looking database in 2020. I know it sounds harsh but visually it looks horrid. That's the truth.

I got you, but visuals are easier to fix than anything. None of us have actually paid yet, this is a beta test for gameplay mechanics and the UI is what ties all the mechanics together. The game can be ugly for seven days before I'll feel the right to complain about that.

EDIT: I honestly agree with you I thought I'd add hahaha, I'm just trying my best to find a potential balance through everyone's pros and cons.
