  1. This diary will serve as a local-to-global journey of “the newest NWA territory” starting in January 1985 using the Risky Business mod (thank you Matt Shannon and Jaysin.) The company I will be running will be a cheeky roleplaying account of the resurrection of the Detroit-territory within the NWA. Historically, the Detroit office stopped promoting shows around 1980 and the territory was essentially stagnant ever since. I will attempt to revive the Detroit-territory (to what it never was, lol) and book it as my own NWA territory.

    High-Level Goals:

    • Attempt to survive financially on a very limited budget. If money is lost, that’s game over!

    • Naturally grow a company in the 1980’s territory days from nothing.

    • Play realistically in a roleplaying aspect.

    What I am starting with:

    • $15,000 in the Great Lakes region.

    • Zero popularity, zero prestige, zero roster, zero titles.

    • Membership in the NWA.

    27170219792_158e7fe1ef_z.jpg

    Paying Up

“$10,000!?” I yelled, clenching my fist. “You’re telling me membership is $10,000?”

“That’s not including yearly dues, kid.” The smoke billowed from his mouth. I watched as the cigar smoke whimsically trailed its way from his abhorrent gob, undercutting my nose. The cigar was rich, scented with zero remorse.

“You’ve got to be kidding me! I’ve barely got enough to get this thing off the ground and you want me to drop $10,000 just like that as ‘initiation’ into the alliance? I told you I wanted to get in the business to make money, not throw it away!” Turning bright-red, I realized I was about to lose my cool and resorted to an old technique my grandfather had taught me… Five deep breaths…

“Listen, I don’t make the rules, I just enforce them. And that’s a discount kid, trust me. Nobody wants to book Detroit now, nobody’s booked Detroit in five years, and nobody really booked it well in the past 40… I’m not sure why you’re so interested in it, but the Board thinks it’s worth a shot in the dark. Now, like I said, your initiation fee is $10,000. Write the check to me and I will handle the rest. Then, you can slap those three letters at the top of that sheet on whatever you want. Your posters, your tee-shirts... hell, you can tattoo that puppy on your ass for all I give a damn, but you ain’t doin’ anything with that N-Dubya-Eh until you cough up the dough. So what’s it gonna be? You gonna run this thing with no experience, no contacts, no network, and think you’re gonna last three days out here? Or are you gonna make the right choice and leverage everything we can bring?” He said firmly. I could tell he had been through this before.

“I give you $10,000, you know what that leaves me with!?” I exclaimed.

“No, and I don’t really care. You fail, you’re dust in the wind, daddy. Nobody will even blink an eye.”, followed by a cough from the cigar.

“You don’t understand, this throws off all my planning! I calculated twenty-five thousand is what I could come in with and have a go at it, you want me to kick this thing off now with only fifteen-thousand? Are you out of your mind?” I yelled, he was making me hot.

He took another puff before remarking, “sign the damn check and quit wasting my time.”

I opened my checkbook slowly, thinking of all the hard-earned sweat and tears I had put myself through just to get to this moment. Countless hours worked, saved, treasured… one signature away from jumping into the deep-end of an experiment that’s going to land me in deep-shit if it’s not a success.

    “Forget a pen?” He laughed.

I must not have realized just how long I was staring at the blank check, but I blinked twice and came back to reality just before reaching into my pocket and pulling out the pen. I stalled again once it hit the paper, but a sense of carpe diem overcame my hand and proceeded to cut the check. Ripping it out of the booklet, I placed it in his hand. He looked it over, grunted, and put his cigar out on my kitchen table.

“Nice doin’ business with you, kid.” He fooled around with his worn and faded brown suit jacket, classic touch on top of his shanty black pants. Coming to his front breast pocket, a business card slithered out towards my way. “This number’s all you need now. Don't call too late, or things might get a little freaky, catch my drift? This check bounces, I’m coming back and bouncing your ass on the curb, got it?” He smirked, proud of his boast, buttoning up his jacket and heading out the door. As it shut, the house stood silent.

“What the hell did I just get myself into?”
  2. How long were you working on this? I would assume you were cooking this since TEW2016.

It first started as an EWR database with supporting documents, then tried converting to 2016 but didn't really finish the job. Then this conversion from the 2016 database to 2020 took a couple of months, less than I expected. I'd like to keep working on it for awhile, just something to dump some hours into here and there because I enjoy working on it. Slowly realizing perhaps I enjoy creating the database more than playing in it... Potential I am get sucked into a different project as well. I've been considering a few ideas...

  3. Damn, I know you said the WWF is hard but bloody hell. I went in ready to show off how good I am but NOPE. Think I will be restarting with WSW. Really loving the mod though I can see myself sinking a lot of hours into this beauty.

Haha thanks for the feedback, hope you can get a good save going! Let me know how it goes would love to hear.

    Good sir,

I don't say this very often, but you should know. This is an amazing mod! The amount of detail & work that went into this is amazing!

This is the most creative mod I've seen in 2020. Excellent job.

Hey thank you very much I hope I can polish off some of the rough edges and leave an excellent mod playable for the next few years! One thing I am noticing is the gimmicks really need re-done, add it to the list!

    This is Version 1.1.

    Vince McMahon is in prison.

His release date? The year 2000.

    Until then,
    wrestling is at war
    .

    This is
    Alpha Version 1.1
. The changes in this version are as follows, but not excluded to:

    1. Complete title histories for all of the Big Four American promotions.

    2. New intro slides, including "Moments That Changed Wrestling" segments and fictional magazine stand reading.

    3. Fixed face/heel divide where errors were originally released.

    4. Revamp to WWF backstory. Changes include: Steve Austin has not won the WWF title yet, Austin 3:16 takes place in July 1995, which means his feud with Shane McMahon is just now starting, more influence of Bam Bam Bigelow and Cactus Jack prior to Austin's breakout, updated biographies for WWF stars.

    5. Addition of Magnum T.A. into the universe and on the NWA roster.

    6. Removed Scott Steiner has WSW North American champion. Left belt vacated to align with storyline in which Konnan defeated Shane Douglas in December 1995 and vacated the belt to prove that he is moving on to "bigger, better things" like the world title.

    7. Fixed biographies where required.

    8. Revamp of Raven/Sandman feud, pulled back the timeline and at this point Raven and Sandman are still feuding and Raven has not turned on Justin Credible yet. Credible + Edge now make up tag team: The Flock.

    9. Added Gary Hart as manager for Genichiro Tenryu.

    10. Added personality attributes for all major players on all rosters.

    11. Added job histories for major players on rosters.

    Future updates planned:

    • Revamp gimmicks

    • Add all of AEW 2019/2020 roster as future workers.

    • Add all of WWF/E 2000’s workers as future workers.

    • Personalities for all workers in major American promotions.

    • Title history for USWA.

    • USWA tweaks and improvements.

    Lore

Wrestling At War is a TEW2020 mod that begins in January, 1996. The world of wrestling is very different from what it became. Hulk Hogan remained with the AWA through its formation of World Star Wrestling. Instead of “Hulkamania”, this world experienced “Macho Madness” that swept the nation. Vince McMahon built the WWF on the shoulders of his superstar, Randy Savage, while Jim Crockett and the rest of the southern NWA stronghold responded by centralizing earlier on in the 1980’s.To the north, Verne Gagne’s AWA and Stu Hart’s Calgary territory joined forces to plant their stamp in Chicago, IL and the surrounding Great Lakes region as the predominant wrestling promotion known as World Star Wrestling. And the remaining combatants of the old Memphis and Mid-South found refuge, and potential coup, with the United States Wrestling Association. The industry changed forever in 1993, when Vince McMahon was convicted in his steroid trail of 1993, and would face an objectively horrible sentence. To serve time for the next seven-years, the WWF would crumble in the wake of fallout. Not only that, but 23-year old Shane McMahon was now in charge, and soon found controversy when he screwed frontman Shawn Michaels out of the WWF Championship while Michaels was on his way out from the WWF to join the upstart HCW in what has become known as “The Baltimore Screwjob”. In 1994, Shawn Michaels, Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, and Sean Waltman formed the foundation of Hollywood Championship Wrestling, the new primetime promotion owned by FOX, live on FOX, every Monday Night. McMahon and the WWF have found shelter with MTV, and have perhaps found a savior in a man named Paul Heyman and his new “attitude era”.

    Wrestling At War, Version 1.1

    • Special thanks to nGo and associated individuals for work on the nGo picture pack, used as base for all worker pictures.

    • Very special thanks to Mammoth for his custom belts for majority of promotions in the game. His incredible work has added another layer of depth I couldn’t have imagined.

    • Thanks to iDOL for his stable logos, I was glad to incorporate a bunch of stable logos into this alternate wrestling world.

  5. <p>Thanks, super close to releasing the next update. Here are some final additions.</p><p> </p><p>

  6. Folks, the original backstory of many of the promotions in this mod is in the 2016 mod forum. It really is one of the most creative and fascinating I've ever read and found myself more interested in reading the story instead of playing the mod. This mod ranks up there with the Death of the Territories and War of the Immortals mods of the past.

    Wrestling at War from 2016

Fypo, thanks for the super kind words! This kind of feedback means the world for something like this. I actually also have PDF version of company histories I thought you were going to link to but a lot of that canon I have changed because as I put pieces together in other ares, new holes appear where I need to fill them!

Wow thanks for that. Having a blast reading through everything! Really great backstories and lore here. Really enjoying reading everyone's backstory Pete. Can't wait for the update, gonna hold off on a save until that time. Man this mod is super underrated

Oh boy, what's all holding you off on a save!? Want to make sure I have what I can for you!

  7. Loving this mod so far, just wondering if there's any chance we could get the belt templates (Like the backgrounds)? I know it may not be a priority to some people but I would love to add some championships to the companies.

To be honest, Mammoth made the belts so I don't have them. Is there a specific company you're looking for? They should be very easy to replicate in Photoshop or any other photo editting software with a simple gradiant tool.

  8. I meant more in terms of people debuting a few years down the line like Aj Styles, Lio Rush, Jay Lethal, etc. It looks like you've gotten most of the core group of people who debut but just the more recent wrestlers (younger ones) we see today that are missing. Great to hear tho. Importing sounds fine. I was just so confused and thought The Sandman was the Inaugural IC champ, same with Austin as WWF champ until I read the bios haha. On the Diary note, not going to lie I honestly would love to do one with the WWF just based on all the fun ideas I have with them. Def a possibility once we get a more updated data down the line :). Thanks again for all your hard work, im defiantly enjoying this.

Yes, workers years in the future are going to be a focus in the next update as well.

Here is some more magazine features for those interested in more of the lore.

  9. Dude, you've got to be kidding me with how amazing this mod is. I just started playing an hour ago as the WWF and ive fallen in love. Austin vs. McMahon at Mania, Los Guererros, Main Event Goldust, Freaking Bill Goldberg doing the undefeated streak in the WWF, all the ECW talent, and..... the Sandman holding a belt? Seriously having a blast. I love alt things like this and this just too good. Im finding myself lost reading all the bios in between the booking as well. I just like the spot the WWF is at. You would think they would be doing way worse with everything that happened and how the talent is spread, but they still have an amazing roster from top to bottom. This will probably be my first long save in awhile. Do you have plans to add more workers? (apologies if asked already.)

EDIT: Noticed Sting and others dont have title history. Also the title histories just show the person's name without the (1) or (2) for multiple reigns (Sting for example)

It’s exciting to get this sort of positive feedback, thanks a lot Munit! This mod is years in the making from the original EWR version to converting to TEW, so I hope it feels as deep as working on and off on something like this should be! The WWF roster was particularly fun to assemble, because none of it I feel is out of the realm of what I feel would be possible in this universe. Everybody knows ECW had some incredible talent, and I think it’s only natural a completely decimated WWF would completely rebrand and try to appeal to a younger audience with edgy content in 1996. Then you’ve got a lot of historical mercenaries and odd-guys out like Foley and Austin, Sandman and Vader, Bam Bam and Goldust (speaking of which, please watch

from his debut... they are how his character should be approached, very avante garde.) Then you’ve got super raw talent on the undercard and the mind of Heyman, really only up from there...

If you’re looking for more workers at the start of the game, likely not. I’ve already rushed some debuts for talent just to squeak out the talent available today. I do want to add more future talent, to a point where I can begin creating more years down the line to create different historical points in the universe. But that will probably require a lot of time I don’t have so if I were to do something I’d love to put together a 2020 update to this alt universe.

Title histories for the big American companies...will be coming in the next update. Should be able to import them I suppose?

Thanks again, would love to see a diary of your game sometime!

  11. Man I'm really liking this. I can't wait for the data to get released. Sting vs Taker feud for the NWA title? Count me in.

Thanks! A link to the updated data is below and on the first post!

I think it would make a certain amount of sense. Aside from everybody being a year or two older there wouldn't really be a downside to it. I guess for you, having to rework title lineages maybe (if those are done - i haven't DLed and checked out yet), but other than that it's pretty easy to just shift dates - I can't imagine anyone is going to say "WELL WHAT WAS IMAGINARY NEIDHART DOING IN 1997?!?!"

Thank you for speaking up to this point... Thankfully US title lineages are not all complete yet so the in-game fixing wouldn't be the issue, need to lay them all out on spreadsheets first. Biggest portion of work would honestly be in the biographies. 99% of workers in the big promotions have custom biographies with specific information, so going back and adjusting those would take awhile.

So, a couple of things I noticed playing WSW -

1.) Candido is a babyface, but a member of the Impact Players and in a feud w/ a heel Taz

2.) The bio of Konnan makes it sound like he won the NA Title in December, then vacated it, but Scott Steiner shows as NA Title holder IG, and there's nothing in his bio.

1.) Thanks for pointing this out, I have adjusted in the update below and on the first page.

2.) I have adjusted this thank you.

    *****

HERE IS THE LATEST PATCH: VERSION 1.1

    Patch Notes:

    1. Fixed face / heel divides where there were errors
    2. Fixed some workers being tagged as road agents when they should not have been
    3. Fixed some biographies where the canon did not align
    4. Fixed starting storyline heat to better align with expected show performance
    5. Added attributes to America's top stars in all of the big 4

  12. <p>Hi everyone,</p><p> </p><p>

Wanted to share this preview of intro slides I will be including in the database.</p><p> </p><p>

Going for a 90's magazine feel for each slide, hoping for a few per each major promotion.</p><p> </p><p>

    <img alt="zTqHD0t.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/zTqHD0t.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

    <img alt="Ctgf8HR.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/Ctgf8HR.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

  13. I don't remember seeing any blank products (and opening it up, I see the same thing you do). I think Competitive Entertainment was added in a patch, so it could be that Iceblaster is running an old version.

(I've been enjoying the mod so far. One thing I noticed in line with what's mentioned above is that I think I saw Kimona in there twice).

Hmm, thanks Fife... hopefully that is the case and the DB isn't corrupt or something!

Thanks for note on Kimona, will update as well.

  14. I mean that across the board, all the character development and major milestones that occurred from 1995-2000 you've packed into 1994-1995.

-Paul Levesque becoming "The Game" Triple H

    -Sting adopting a Crow gimmick

-Steve Austin becoming 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, feuding with a McMahon, and winning the WWF Title

-Ken Shamrock's entry into Pro Wrestling

    -Adam Copeland becoming 'Edge'

    -Charles Wright becoming The Godfather

    -Marcus Bagwell becoming Buff Bagwell

    -The Nation of Domination storyline

-The Ministry of Darkness storyline ("The New Church")

    -King Mabel becoming Viscera

    -WWF's Pay-Per-View schedule from 2000

    -Glenn Jacobs becoming Kane

-Bill Goldberg's entry into Pro Wrestling and the beginning of the streak

    -Hulk Hogan becoming Hollywood Hogan

    -A Screwjob

    -Buried Alive Matches

^And that's all just off the top of my head. Nothing would be lost and a ton of realism would be gained if you set the start date at 1998 and spaced out some of the lore in the bio's; that way, it's much more understandable how things would've happened at an accelerated rate due to there being four major pro wrestling companies and an incredible amount of competition.

You definitely bring up a strong list of items that have occured early, but I needed a lot of these workers to be where they are to accurately fill out the roster starting in 1996. I will admit some workers have debuted earlier than real life and some gimmicks as well, but my intention was to put these pieces in place already versus someone having to do themselves. Felt having people like Kane, Hogan, Bagwell in their places we know and love them for already to be more appealing to those checking out this mod versus having to trigger the starting points themselves. It's kind of hard for me to press the "fast-forward" button on the canon timeline without providing some explanation as to how these other companies would have skirted by between 1994 to 1998.

I guess my connsolation to your examples is a lot of these examples are just at the beginnings of their character story-arch. Kane has just debuted, Hollywood Hogan and Bischoff have just come together (opportunity to start their own nWo and fight Michaels and the Kliq for HCW), The Undertaker's "reign of darkness" (i.e. Ministry of Darkness) has just started, Sting was literally just buried alive and hasn't even debuted proprely as "The Crow" gimmick yet, Edge hasn't fully transformed yet from being a simple lackey for Raven, etc.

In pushing the "go" on a lot of these characters/storys, this was an attempt to give the canon-story of this universe more juice than simply creating the companies, providing the rosters, and letting the user piece-together their own alternate-history. I want to provide a strong structure to the rosters with a lot of context as to who and why people are the way they are.

The only one I wish I could have held back on was Stone Cold, but I simply couldn't find any other character or story that would have saved WWF from the serious reprocussions of the rosters deserting a failing company now that Vince is in jail (especially with so much available competition). But I would argue that also leaves a door open for Stone Cold to turn heel, famously, and/or develop another big babyface talent to fight with Stone Cold for the top spot, etc.

Thanks for the criticism, hopefully you will still find this mod enjoyable!
