Barry pulled up in front of the camera and grabbed a mic.

    Barry: Hello once again.

This is Barry Windham. Just enjoying the day on my ranch and riding my ATV around the property.

The more I look at the AWA, the more I see the opportunity for strong alliances. But, I know there will be strong enemy camps to face along the way. This is a sport where having loyal allies is important. If you have no allies, you could be in serious trouble. Anyone who watches my back then I'll have theirs as well.

I'm really looking forward to being a part of the new era here. Things are just starting to heat up in the AWA.

There are rapid changes being made here. The AWA is rising to prominence once again in this great sport. And I know you fans will want to be a part of it. See the re-emergence of the AWA to power status in the wrestling world.

Nikita Koloff has arrived. Who will be next to come to the AWA? It could be anyone because this is the place to be. Nikita, like me, had choices of where to go. We chose to come here. That speaks volumes.

I'm excited and I can't wait to step in the ring in the AWA and do battle with some of the best the sport has to offer.

It's a new era in professional wrestling. And it's a new era for the AWA.

I'm gonna be part of it. How about you?

Windham pointed right at the camera lens and then turned, hopped back on his ATV and drove off.

Koloff: Thank you, Eric. It is great to be here on All-Star Wrestling. And it's great to be in Rockford, Illinois!

    More cheers.

Bischoff: These fans have quickly taken a liking to you, Nikita. What doers that mean to you?

Koloff: It means a great deal to me. These fans are the reason this sport exists. Without them, how you say, there is no professional wrestling. They are our lifeline.

Bischoff: You've rejected Russia and now embrace America. For an immigrant like you, what does it feel like to now be an American?

Koloff: In Russia, you have to be of Russian blood to be a true Russian. You come to America, follow the rules and work hard, you can become an American no matter your race or, how you say, creed. This is the greatest country in the world.

    Crowd cheered.

Bischoff: What are your thoughts on the current level of talent here in the AWA?

Koloff: Some of the best wrestlers are right here in the AWA. You want to test yourself then you come here. You are matching up with the best. And I'm looking forward to being in the AWA for a long time

    More cheers.

Rheingans came down the face aisle to a nice ovation.

Valentine came down the heel aisle to pretty strong boos but also had his fans.

Ref took the belt from Valentine and held it up for ll to see and handed it off to Bischoff.

Ref called the two men to the middle of the ring and laid down the rules and patted each man down.

Ref sent each man to his corner and called for the bell.

The two men came out of their corners and circled one another and engaged in a collar-and-elbow tie-up and Rheingans drove Valentine next to the ropes. Ref ordered a break and the break was clean. The two men engaged in another collar-and-elbow tie-up and Rheingans gained the advantage and maneuvered around behind Valentine and grabbed Valentine around the waist. Valentine tried to escape and then Rheingans took Valentine down to the mat and rolled Valentine up in a pinning combination. 1..2... Valentine kicked out. Both men up and Valentine backed up and sized up the situation. The two men engaged in another collar-and-elbow tie-up and Valentine got up inside on Rheingans and hit Rheingans with a knee to the gut. Valentine pounded Rheingans across the back, whipped Rheingans into the ropes and looked to catch Rheingans coming off with a backdrop but Rheingans caught Valentine with a sunset flip. Valentine struggled to not go over but Rheingans succeeded in flipping Valentine for the pin. 1...2... Valentine kicked out. Crowd buzzing. Both men up and Valentuine charged at Rheingans and Rheingans ole'd Valentine and caught Valentine with a hand sweep to the back of the leg that sent Valentine crashing to the mat. Valentine up and Rheingans repeated the move with the same result. Valentine up and angrily kicked the bottom rope as the crowd cheered.

Reynolds: I don't think Valentine realized the fight he was in for with Rheingans.

Crockett: Seems like he might have taken Rheingans a little too lightly.

Bockwinkel: The champion is not at his best tonight. When the champion is off a little, these are the matches where unexpected lightning can strike for the challenger.

Valentine angrily stalked around the ring. Rheingans moved in on Valentine and Valentine leaned out through the top and middle rope and the ref ordered Rheingans to stand back. Valentine cautiously pulled his upper body back in the ring. Valentine then locked up with Rheingans in another collar-and-elbow tie-up and Rheingans drove Valentine next to the ropes. Ref ordered a break. Break started clean but Valentine stunned Rheingans with an eye rake. Ref reprimanded Valentine as Rheingans turned away from the champ and grabbed at his eyes. Valentine clubbed Rheingans in the back. Rheingans turned and Valentine hit a deliberate series of bionic elbows to the top of the head. Valentine whipped Rheingans into the ropes and caught Rheingans coming off with a back elbow to the chest. Valentine suplexed Rheingans and then quick stomped Rheingans, ran and hit the ropes and came off with a running elbow smash that connected. Valentine for the pin. 1...2... Rheingans kicked out. Fans cheered. Valentine caught Rheingans with a punch as both men got to their feet. Valentine whipped Rheingans into the buckles. Valentine charged in on Rheingans but Rheingans moved and Valentine slammed front-first into the buckles and turned and Rheingans caught the stunned Valentine in a small package for the pin. 1...2...3! NO! Valentine kicked out just before the three count. Both men up and Valentine went to kick Rheingans and Rheingans caught Valentine's foot. Valentuine tried to beg off. Rheingans spun The Hammer completely around and nailed him with an inverted atomic drop. Greg walked around on his tip toes in the ring. Valentine turned and Rheingans caught the champ in a side headlock. Valentine countered with a belly-to-back suplex to free himself from the hold. Both men up and Valentine stunned Rheingans with a couple of kicks to the knee area followed by a shinbreaker across the knee. Rheingans crashed to the mat. Valentine grabbed Rheingans' left leg and raised it and kicked Rheingasn three times in the lower thigh/knee area. Valentine yanked on the leg and then locked Rheingans in the figure four. Crowd urguing Rheingans not to submit. Rheingans fighting like a warrior through the pain. Rheingans then found the strength to start to reverse the hold. Valentine fought to resist but Rheingans succeeded in reversing the hold to the delight of the crowd. Fans popping like champagne corks. Greg was able to get a hand on the bottom rope to force a break. Both men up and hobbling, Valentine caught Rheingans with a kick to the gut and then went to piledrive Rheingans but Rheingans twice blocked the move and pulled Valentine's legs out from under him and Valentine crashed to the mat. Rheingans quickly yanked on Valentine's left leg and wrapped Valentine up in the figure four. Crowd eating it up. Now, Valentine was the one struggling not to submit in his own signature finisher. Valentine fighting through the pain and inching towards the ropes. After a little more struggle, Valentine was able to drape his arm out over the bottom rope to force a break in the hold.

Bockwinkel: Rheingans has really looked sharp tonight. I'm sensing a possible new champion!

Valentine climbed out on the ring apron and got to his feet. Rheingans ignored the ref and went to grab Valentine and Valentine leaned through the top and middle rope and hit Rheingans with a couple of shoulder blocks to the gut. Rheingans stumbled back holding his gut. Valentine moved in and caught Rheingans with another series of bionic elbows to the top of the head. Rheingans stunned and turned facing away from Valentine. Valentine grabbed Rheingans from behind and ran Rheingans into the ropes and rolled Rheingans up for the pin. Valentine grabbed the tights. 1...2... Rheingans reached up, grabbed the back of Valentine's tights and rolled and reversed the hold. 1...2...thr... Valentine kicked Rheingans off. Crowd let out a loud groan.

Crockett: If you're a fan of hard-hitting professional wrestling you gotta love this!

Both men up and Valentine charged in and tackled Rheingans into the corner. Valentine fired away on Rheingans with punches. Valentine then struck Rheingans with an elbow smash to the back of the neck.

Bockwinkel: That elbow smash to the neck can be a crippling move. The neck is one of the most vulnerable parts of the body.

Valentine pulled Rheingans out of the corner and whipped Rheingans into the ropes and caught Rheingans coming off with a high backdrop. Rheingans crashed to the mat. Valentine dropped an elbow to the downed Rheingans. Valentine started pulling Rheingans to his feet when Rheingans stunned the champ with gut punches. Rheingans to his feet nailed Valentine with a head shot followed by a cutter out of nowhere. Crowd exploded like a bomb as Valentine crashed to the mat. Rheingans for the cover. 1...2... Valentine got his foot on the bottom rope. ...3! Ref called for the bell as the fans nearly blew the roof off the building.

Crockett: The ref didn't see Valentine's foot on the bottom rope before the three count!

Rheingans up and jumping up and down and soaking in the crowd adulation.

Ref took the title from Bischoff and said something to the announcer.

Bischoff: In a time of 10 minutes, 42 seconds, your winner...and NEW Pro Wrestling Heritage Champion... Brad Rheingans!

More crowd cheers as Rheingans was handed the belt.

Valentine up and started to argue with the ref and put his foot on the bottom rope gesturing his foot was on the rope before the count of three. Ref talking with Valentine and Rheingans went over and stood on the middle buckle and held the belt aloft for all to see and celebrate with him.

Bockwinkel: I've got to talk with the referee.

Bockwinkel removed his headset and got up and climbed into the ring and started talking with the ref. Rheingans wondered what the discussion was about and came over.

Valentine picked up on a mic.

Valentine: That's my belt! Give it to me!

Bischoff quickly climbed into the ring with mic in hand.

Bischoff: President Bockwinkel, what's going on?

Bockwinkel: This is the first major decision I've had to make since I've become President. The referee did not see Greg Valentine get his foot on the bottom rope at he count of two.

Loud boos from the crowd and some anger.

Valentine: I'm still the champion, dammit! I want MY belt! Tell him to hand it over, Bockwinkel!

Bockwinkel gestured for the belt. Rheingans hesitated but handed it over.

Bockwinkel: I am holding up the Pro Wrestling Heritage Championship.

We are going to have a re-match between Valentine and Rheingans for the Pro Wrestling Heritage Championship! I will announce when and where very soon!

    Crowd started chanting: Bullshit! Bullshit!

Rheingans and Valentine both beside themselves.

Rheingans: The referee counted the pin!

Valentine: That belt should be returned to me, President Bockwinkel, and there should be no re-match! This is outrageous!

Bockwinkel: I had to make a quick decision and this one is the most fair to both parties!

Valentine: Fair my ass! Nick Bockwinkel: the scandal president!

Rheingans: I'm the champ! I won!

    Bockwinkel: Goodnight, gentlemen!

Bockwinkel turned and left the ring with the belt in tow to a mixed crowd reaction.

Valentine and Rheingans both upset in the ring.

Reynolds: We'll have more on this next week fans!

Crockett: Both men have a valid argument, Jack! The ref missed Valentine putting his foot on the bottom rope and counted the pinfall and in most cases that would stand! Valentine did indeed get his foot on the bottom rope before the count of three and the count should have been stopped! That's the human element of pro wrestling! Sometimes, mistakes will be made! But, Pressident Bockwinkel made his decision and it must be abided by whether fans like it or not!

Reynolds: See you next week, everybody!

  2. While you wait for the next fine AWA show to drop, enjoy this from Southwest Championship Wrestling.

I may have posted this once before, but it merits another look.

Southwest Championship Wrestling. What might have been had Joe Blanchard been bankrolled and stayed on USA. (Heavy sigh.)

People may think this is crazy, but I believe wrestling-wise, this may have been the best promotion in the country at the time had they been able to expand.

    Bobby Jaggers vs. Abdullah:

Neslon: Col. DeBeers, you have run Sgt. Slaughter out of the AWA. How does it feel?

DeBeers: How does it feel? It feels great, Nelson! I will always be remembered as the man who ran Sgt. Slaughter out of the AWA! The fans watched as I destroyed their all-American hero! The America's Hero facade of Sgt. Slaughter has now crumbled to dust! And I take great pleasure in knowing that I am the man who accomplished this Herculean feat!

On my headstone I want it to read: Here lies Col. DeBeers! The man who vanquished Sgt. Slaughter from the AWA!

My victory over that wanna-be GI Joe was a victory for decency and the great white way! Sarge decided to represent the loathsome dung heap known as the USA! Well, that dung heap was created because I beat the you know what out of Slaughter! Haha!

Crowd booed. Some trash thrown in the ring.

Nelson: AWA newcomer Nikita Koloff, who came from a hate America background but has since changed his ways and has embraced this country, has made it clear he would like to talk with you about your attitudes towards America. He wants to see if he can change your heart and mind and get you to embrace this country.

DeBeers: I used to have a lot of respect for Nikita Koloff when he was with Uncle Ivan! Now, he's a traitor to Mother Russia! He's turned his back on his homeland and his people and sold them down the river for American cash and American filth and moral depravity! For all we know, Nikita is now married to some colored girl! Shame on you, Nikita! I will not sit down and break bread with a traitor! The only thing I'll break is a chair over his head!

Crowd booed loudly but some cheered.

Nelson: You absolutely won't meet with him?

DeBeers: There's no way I lower myself to the standards Nikita has now embraced by selling out his homeland! No chance for a meeting! None!

Nelson: That was Col. DeBeers, everybody!

    More boos.

Nelson: Would you please welcome my guest at this time. He is the former AWA World Champion... Cactus Jack!

Crazy Train filled the arena and Cactus made his way down the heel aisle with a scowl on his face. Mainly boos but also a decent amount of
    cheers for Jack.

Cactus climbed in the ring and stared out at the crowd as the crowd reax grew.

    Nelson: Cactus, you are...

Jack: Let's get one thing straight, Larry Nelson. You called me the former World Champion. Well, that's not gonna last for long. And that's because the next time I face Wahoo in this ring, I'm gonna rip him apart and take back what is rightfully mine.

    Crowd boos. Some cheers.

Nelson: You came out when I was interviewing Wahoo and made the throat-slitting gesture towards him. Why?

Jack: I want Wahoo to know that I'm not only coming after the title; I'm coming after him. There will be blood. And it will be all Wahoo's when all is said and done.

Nelson: You seem very angry since you lost the title. Would you agree with that assessment?

Jack: I've hardly slept since losing the belt at WrestleRock. And I have a serious case of tunnel vision. I can't rest until I've re-captured the AWA World Title. And it will happen and happen soon.

Wahoo, you caught one on me at WrestleRock. I promise you that will not happen again! The next time we step in the ring together will be the last night of your title reign!

    Nelson: Cactus Jack, everybody!

TV MAIN EVENT: The Trooper vs. Manny Fernandez

Trooper made his way to the ring to a good ovation down the face aisle. He handed out little souvenir speeding tickets to fans along the way.

Fernandez made his way down the heel aisle to strong boos but also had his fans.

Announcers wondered if the masked man would appear and wreak havoc on another Trooper match.

As expected, the match was a hard-hitting power wrestling battle between these two ring warriors. Some near falls and some cheating on Manny's part.

End of the match saw Manny on the offensive. Manny worked over Trooper and whipped Trooper into the buckles. Manny charged in on Trooper but Trooper got his foot up and Manny slammed chest-first into it and crashed to the mat. Trooper snapped Manny up, whipped Manny into the ropes and blasted Manny coming off with a big clothesline. Crowd popped. Trooper waited for Manny to get up. Manny up and Trooper hit Manny with a flying shoulder tackle. Manny crashed to the mat. Masked Mystery Man came through the crowd quickly and jumped up on the apron. Ref distracted with masked man. Ref went over and ordered masked man off the apron but masked man had words with the ref. Crowd yelling for the ref to turn around as Trooper had Manny covered. Trooper slapped the mat three times in frustration. Trooper got off Manny and went over to where the ref and masked mystery man were. Trooper grabbed the masked man and started shaking him with the ref caught in between the two. From the other side of the arena, another masked mystery man made his way through the crowd and to ringside. Both masked men dressed the same. Ref went down being caught between Trooper and the other masked man. On the floor, masked man pulled out a baggie and poured a white powder into his hand. Trooper was able to punch the other masked man and slammed his head into the ring bolt that connects the post to the turnbuckle and the masked man cashed to the floor. The other masked man had climbed up on the apron. Ref still down and Manny recovering. Trooper saw the other masked man and walked in his direction and the masked man threw the powder in Trooper's eyes. Trooper blinded. Masked man fled the scene through the crowd. Manny recovered enough to roll Trooper up from behind and grab the tights. Ref recovered and crawled over. 1...2...3! Ref called for the bell as the crowd booed. The other masked man was able to recover and escape through the crowd. Manny up and the ref raised his hand in victory. Trooper rolled over on his side and had his hands over his eyes.

Pedicino: The masked mystery man has struck again and cost the Trooper another match: this time by throwing some sort of powder in his eyes!  And this time he had help!

Dundee: Maybe the person under the mask was a Mary Kay Cosmetics salesman and thought Trooper would like to try out one of their new cosmetics!

Pedicino: Please, Bill! Enough with the sarcasm!

    WINNER: Manny - Pinfall - 9:48

    LATE JUNE 1990

AWA HQ - ST. LOUIS PARK, MN

    CONFERENCE CALL

ON THE CALL: Deborah Harry, Jim Crockett and Bill Watts (Not present: John Waters and Jerry Jarrett.)

After the initial pleasantries between the three it was time for business.

Bill: Deb, what's going on with TV negotiations?

Deb: Well, we're still talking with ESPN about re-upping our contract with them. We're still butting heads with them over how many times a year they should be allowed to pre-empt our show in its set timeslot. We haven't budged from a maximum of five pre-emptions per year and they still want more leeway.

John and I have also been talking to VH1 and MTV.

Crockett: How are things going there?

Deb: Things on the VH1 side look better. If we got a set slot there, we would be pretty much guarantee not being pre-empted except for maybe a couple of occasions per year. MTV falls more in line with ESPN on the pre-emption thing.

Bill: Who's offering the most money?

Deb: ESPN is still offering the most money for a deal.

Crockett: So, take the VH1 deal for less money and fewer possible pre-emptions of the show or take the ESPN deal for more money and more possible pre-emptions.

Deb: ESPN is also offering two more things that neither VH1 or MTV is.

ESPN is also offering to throw in two network specials per year and air  an episode of ESPN Championship Wrestling live every four months.

    Bill: Three episodes a year?

    Deb: Right?

Bill: The ESPN deal still sounds better than the VH1 deal with the bonuses thrown in.

Has VH1 offered anything other than a weekly spot for the show?

Deb: I mentioned it to them. But they have yet to respond.

Crockett: You and John keep plugging away at it. We'll get a deal done soon.

Deb: Working hard on it, Jim.

Bill: Deb, what's going on with the move?

Deb: Still a two horse race between Phoenix and Vegas. But right now, Vegas has a slight lead to get the nod.

    Crockett: Sin City.

Deb: Would you guys be worry about the behavior of the wrestlers in a city like Vegas?

Bill: It doesn't matter where wrestlers are. They could be in Lubbiock, Texas or Las Vegas and still get in lots of trouble.

    Deb chuckled.

Deb: The no state income tax thing for Vegas definitely gives it an advantage; though Arizona's state income tax is really small.

Crockett: Vegas or Phoenix as a home base would be a big plus for us when it comes to luring talent.

    Deb: That's what I understand.

Well, gents, I hate to wrap this up but I've got to run.

Crockett: Thanks for keeping us updated, Deb. Tell John we said hi.

    Deb: Will do.

The conference call ended and Bill and Jim went back to talking about the wrestling side of the business.

Things were coming to a head in the new era AWA...

Just have to wait and see on that one. 🙂

Given his roles in the four horsemen and the heenan family's he's definitely gonna be awa's new top heel.

He's gonna be one of the top heels at the very least.

Tully was always a great singles heel and I expect him to be the one to take the belt off Wahoo in the future

Problem in the WWF he was never allowed to shine in a singles capacity. Vince clearly saw him as a tag team wrestler.

We'll see what the future holds on the title front for Tully.

Thanks for the vote of confidence on that event.  😁  A takeaway I got from this in the predictions department was that out of the Final Four in the tournament, I noticed that Renée and Claire were the only team not predicted to win the tournament; looking at it from the ITTL kayfabe approach, it would appear that Renée and Claire were seen by the fans as the underdogs out of the final four teams, with each of the other teams being given better odds due to various factors (like Kyo/Miyamoto with their outstanding skills, or the Sisters of Love or Hase/Richard due to their rulebreaking tactics and having managers/stables behind them to back them up in case they run into trouble, to help them cheat their way to victory through underhanded means against opponents they regard as threats to them).

That said, I'm currently working on an upcoming behind-the-scenes chapter that will help explain what led to the events that led to the implosion of the Dynasty at the end of the card (no spoilers from me here, but I think I can guess what the readers will be thinking about what happened BTS at the Forum before the card began...).  😏

What I can say, though, is that now that Renée and Claire are the new NWA World Women's Tag Team Champions, they've got a road ahead of them as they go out to defend their belts - and a return trip to Japan for Renée to defend those belts just may be in the works...  😉

Interesting to see no one picked Renee and Claire.

Looking forward to the next chapter! 😀

  7. LATE JUNE 1990

AWA HQ - ST. LOUIS PARK, MN

    Tully Blanchard had arrived...

The star was sitting patiently in the waiting area reading the latest Sports Illustrated.

Jim Crockett walked down the hall and Tully stood up. Crockett and Tully shook hands and hugged.

Jim: Good to see you, Tully.

Tully: Good to see you, Jim.

The pair headed down to Crockett's office where Bill Watts and Jerry Jarrett, who had flown in for the event, and Triumph Media Sports attorney Jackie Chiles  were waiting for the guest of honor.

In the office was a dessert tray and beverages,

Tully shook hands with Bill and Jerry. The five then gnoshed on some nice desserts and engaged in small talk for 20 minutes.

Jim: Let's get down to business, shall we.

Crockett pulled the contract out of one of his locked desk drawers and slid it across the table.

Crockett: Look that over for a few minutes.

Jim: I'm gonna grab another piece of that German chocolate cake.

Jerry: Think I'll grab a piece of that strawberry pie.

The two walked back over to the dessert tray as Tully looked over the contract.

The two sat back down with their desserts and patiently waited for Tully to read the contract.

Tully: This contract guarantees me a minimum of $100,000 dollars.

Crockett: That is correct. We don't hand out guaranteed money like they due at Turner.

But, with the way the game is changing, we are starting to offer contracts with guaranteed minimums. The day of the simple handshake agreement are over in wrestling.

Tully: The duration of the contract is for two years.

    Tully shook his head approvingly.

Tully: I like what I see. The problem with Turner contracts, of course, is they lock you into a specific money deal that you can't get out of. If you want a raise, good luck.

Bill: It's a good deal, Tully. With the way things are moving, I think it's safe to say that with the AWA moving in the right direction, you'll make way more than $100 grand a year.

At the same time, you've got to remember that we're on the rise, so there could still be a few hiccups in the road to becoming one of the 'Big 3' again.

Tully continued to look over the contract.

Jerry: Tully, we want you on board. You'll be a main event star right out of the box because of your reputation.

Tully: You've looked over the contract, Jackie.

Chiles: I have. It's a good deal. It beats getting free Starbucks for life.

    Everyone laughed.

Crockett: Tully, we really want you here. When we heard the contract negotiations with Turner fell through, we knew we had to strike while the iron was hot.

Tully: I've heard reports the AWA is looking to move their offices to a warmer climate.

Crockett: Yes. The offices will be moving to Vegas or Phoenix. We feel it will be better to attract talent that way. A lot of guys don't want to freeze their butts off six months a year.

Tully: As a Texas boy, I could not agree more.

Jarrett then whispered something in Tully's ear. Tully looked at Jerry.

    Tully: Really? You're serious?

Jarrett: Serious as a heart attack.

Bill: We have big plans for you. You'll be one of our top two or three heels if not the top one.

Tully: This deal gets better and better!

Crockett: Like with Barry, we'll produce a series of promos announcing your arrival. It will be a big deal when you finally step into the squared circle.

Bill: What are you waiting for, Tully? Sign the deal and join the AWA family.

Jerry: Live dangerously. Put pen to paper. Let's see that John Hancock on there.

Tully looked over the contract a little more as a tense silence hovered over the room.

Crockett slid a pen across the table.

Tully picked it up and hesitated briefly before signing the deal.

    Bill: Yes!

Crockett: Welcome to your new home, Tully.

Jarrett: You made the right decision.

Tully slid the contract back across the table to Crockett and Crockett, Jarrett and Watts signed on as witnesses and Jackie Chiles gave it his legal signature.

The group stood up and shook hands with one another, congratulating themselves on signing a man who was about to embark on the biggest journey of his career.

Crockett pulled a cloth off a silver bucket on a stand. The bucket held champagne. He also pulled out glasses.

Crockett popped the cork and poured the champagne.

The five men were standing and Crockett signaled to raise their glasses.

Crockett: To a new chapter in the career of Tully Blanchard!

The others said: Here! Here! as the glasses clinked and the group sipped the champagne.

It was a joyous mood in Crockett's office.

Tully Blanchard had been signed, sealed and delivered.

What did Jerry Jarrett whisper to Tully that made Tully react in a surprised but delighted way.

Fans would just have to wait and see.

The AWA just added another major player. The new AWA was taking shape and Tully, along with Nikita and Barry. were gonna be key players in deciding the company's fate.

    And on the TV front...

In-studio: Nelson intro'd comments from Muraco regarding the vicious attack on him by Sheik Adnan El-Kaissey after Muraco's match with Kokina at WrestleRock.

    VIDEO:

    # Muraco was standing in front of the AWA logo in street clothes with mic in hand. He was wearing sunglasses and had a large white bandage on the left side of his face.

Muraco: You see this bandage. I'm wearing courtesy of Kokina's manager Sheik Adnan El-Kaissey.

When the Sheik hit me in the side of the face with that blood pressure machine, it was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. And that's saying something in this sport.

I'm still dealing with the effects of being hit with that steel object today.
I've got bad headaches. I sometimes have double vision.

But, I want the Sheik to know this. I'm coming for you, Sheik. And I won't stop until I get my hands on you and tear you apart. I intend to maim you.

I want it known that I have been talking to AWA officials Jim Crockett, Bill Watts and Jerry Jarrett about, not a grudge match with you, but rather a revenge match against you. I really want you to suffer.

The match will need to be held under rules where you can't escape, Sheik. Everybody knows that deep down the Sheik is a coward. He hides behind his his pet beast Kokina and thinks he's safe.

Well, Sheik, you're not safe. I want you looking over your shoulder everywhere you go. I want you wondering if Don Muraco might be waiting to pounce on you. I don't want you to sleep. I don't want you to eat. I want vengeance.

So, I'll see you around, camel breath. And the next time we meet... it will not be pleasant for you.

    END VIDEO

In-Studio: Nelson said that you have to wonder what type of match AWA officials will come up with for Muraco vs. Sheik.

Morgan slapped hands with fans on the way to the ring, Once in the ring, Morgan acknowledged the fans.

Divine (a 'tweener) came down the heel aisle to a mixed crowd reaction.

Morgan started out fast before Divine fought her way back into the short but fast-paced battle.

In the end, Candi's experience proved too much and she made Morgan submit to the Boston Crab - 3:16

In-studio: Nelson said the women's division was heating up in the new era AWA. Hyped newcomers Reggie Bennett and Tina Moretti and said champ Mimi better be looking over her shoulder as her days as champ could be numbered.

Barry: I'm Barry Windham. And I'm coming to the AWA.

I'm excited to be a part of the new vision for this legendary promotion.

The AWA promises great wrestling action. And, the roster is second to none in the sport.

I've wrestled for the NWA, WWF and all over the world. But, the AWA is the place to be now. Things are happening here. It's an exciting time to be a part of it.

Fans who think the AWA is a promotion on the decline have not been watching lately. It's wall-to-wall wrestling action with some of the best the sport has to offer.

I can't begin to tell you how excited I am to put on the boots and step in that ring and hear the roar of the crowd in the AWA.

The competition will be fierce and I'm looking forward to it.

This is Barry Windham. I'm coming to the AWA. Talk with you next time.

    Jonnie Stewart vs. Jake Milliman

Stewart came down the heel aisle to strong boos.

Once in the ring, Stewart strutted around to boos.

Milliman came down the face aisle to a solid crowd reax.

Once in the ring, Milliman tore off his '2% Forever' t-shirt and was preparing to throw it into the crowd when Stewart pounced on him from behind.

    Ref called for the bell.

Jake dropped the shirt in the ring and Stewart hammered away on Jake and then picked up the t-shirt and started choking Jake with it. Ref counting. Stewart broke the illegal move at the ref's count of 4 and tossed the shirt out of the ring.

Stewart dominated early but Jake fought his way back into the match and it became a see-saw affair. A couple of close call finishes. Stewart used a couple of shortcuts during the match to gain the advantage.

End of the match saw Stewart in control. Stewart nailed Jake with a sidebreaker across the knee and then went out on the apron and mounted the top buckle. Stewart turned and started yelling at booing fans. This allowed Jake time to recover, get up and grab Stewart and slam Stewart off the top rope to the delight of the crowd. Stewart up and Jake moved in and Stewart went to punch Jake but Jake blocked the punch try and fired away on Stewart with punches. Jake whipped Stewart into the ropes and caught Stewart coming off with a powerslam. Crowd popped. Stewart rolled over on his side and Jake reached down to grab Jake but Stewart caught Jake with an eye poke and rolled Jake up in a small package for the pin. 1...2...3! Ref called for the bell as the fans booed. Stewart up and the ref raised his hand in victory.

Stewart left the ring and was greeted by Bischoff, who had mic in hand.

    Bischoff: Jonnie Stewart...

Stewart: The 'Wrestler of the '90s is now on a roll! It won't be long before there's gold around this gorgeous waist!

Crowd booed as Stewart walked off.

You'll never know when I appear, Trooper. I'm like a ghost.  appear then disappear. You never know when I'll show up to punish you.

You see, Trooper, this is personal. We know each other and I have a vendetta against you. But, to keep things mysterious, I'm not telling you our issue. I'll leave you to try and figure it out. The only thing I'll say is that we crossed paths a while ago.

I'm watching everything you do, Trooper. Every breath you take. Every move you make I'm watching you.

You have a chance to be a big star in this sport. But, I intend to short-circuit your rise. I'm looking to kill your career in this business.

Trooper, I want you working at a fast-food joint flipping burgers. And yes, Trooper, I would like fries with that. Hahahaha!

Billy Jack Haynes & Scott Norton won a squash match over Dusty Wolfe & Terry Gibbs when Haynes made Gibbs submit to the full nelson

Haynes and Norton got a nice ovation coming down the face aisle.

    POST-MATCH INTERVIEW:

Nelson: Billy Jack Haynes and Scott Norton, you're now wrestling for the AWA full-time. And it's clear you two are a force to be reckoned with in the tag team division.

Haynes: It's great to be here in the AWA. Things are really cookin' here. Me and Scott are excited to be here and wrestling in a growing and tough tag team division.

Norton: They call this the new era of the AWA because the AWA is now under new ownership. Well, we're proud to be part of the new era.

We look forward to the challenges that lie ahead for us. Look at some of the great teams you have here: Badd Company, the Top Guns, Patera and Rheingans, Greg Gagne and Jake Milliman and, of course, the World Tag Team Champions the Destruction Crew.

Haynes: Like any new team that comes into a promotion, we know we're gonna have to work our way up the ladder to get a shot at those belts. Every tag team wants the tag titles. Destruction Crew, know this. We are gunning for you. That's the main reason we left the Pacific Northwest and came here. We make no bones about it. We want those titles; and the Destruction Crew better be on high alert.

Norton: We would never have left the beautiful Pacific Northwest if it wasn't for the great opportunity presented by the AWA. Now is the time for us to strike. We'll climb the ladder to earn the right to challenge for those titles. Destruction Crew, it's like this. To use a weather analogy, it looks like cloudy skies today and no title reign tomorrow for you.

    Crowd cheered.

Nelson: Strong words from the newest tag team in the AWA! Scott Norton and Billy Jack Haynes, everybody!

Muraco was standing in front of the AWA logo in street clothes with mic in hand. He was wearing sunglasses and had a large white bandage on the left side of his face.

Muraco: You see this bandage? I'm wearing it courtesy of Kokina's manager Sheik Adnan El-Kaissey.

In-ring: Larry Nelson was standing center ring with mic in hand.

Nelson: Please welcome my guest! He is the new AWA World Champion... 'Chief' Wahoo McDaniel!

Nice pop from the crowd as Wahoo made his way down the face aisle. Wahoo had the belt around his waist.

Wahoo climbed in the ring and acknowledged the crowd.

Nelson: They love ya, champ! How does it feel to realize the dream of finally becoming the World Champion?!

Wahoo: I still think I'm dreaming, Larry. I had just about given up hope of ever being the World Champion. But then, I was given one more opportunity at WrestleRock and was finally able to grab the brass ring.

Nelson: Cactus Jack was one tough opponent.

Wahoo: He was, Larry. And being the former champion means he's entitled to a re-match. And he's gonna get that shot.

Nelson: Right now, you've got three wrestlers already looking to challenge for that title: Cactus Jack, Bob Orton and Pro Wrestling Heritage Champion Greg Valentine. That's a tough trio.

Wahoo: It is indeed. In this sport, when you win the big belt, everyone it seems is gunning for you. Everyone wants to be the World Champion. And I'm gonna have to bring my 'A' game if I want to remain the champion for a long time.

    Fans cheered.

Wahoo: And I will be a fighting champion, you can take that to the bank. I won't run from any challenge. The people expect a lot from me and I do not intend to let them down.

Nelson: Cactus, do you have anything to say?

Jack just kept glaring at Wahoo. It was a glare of rage.

    Nelson: Cactus?

Jack then made the thumb across the throat gesture and dropped off the apron and headed back up the hee; aisle to mainly boos.

    Nelson: Wahoo?

Wahoo: It's clear Cactus is trying to play mind games, Larry. But, I've been in this business long enough to know that you can't be intimidated by anyone. If you're intimidated, that's setting you up for disaster. He can play all the mind games he wants. We'll see what happens when the bell rings.

Nelson: Nikita Koloff! Great to see you in action in the AWA!

Koloff: It is great to be here, Larry Nelson! God bless America!

    Fans cheered.

Nelson: In the interview I did with you introducing you to the fans here in the AWA, you spoke of Col. Debeers hating this country and its people.

Koloff: I did. I see a lot of my old self in Col. DeBeers. In Soviet Union, we were taught to hate America, Americans and, how you say, everything they stood for.

I hated this country when I came here. But, over time, I realized this was the greatest country with the greatest people in the world.

    More cheers.

Nikita: Col. DeBeers, the man who, how you say, run Sgt. Slaughter out of the AWA, is a man seething with hate. You hope that one day he realizes the error of his ways and embraces United States.

I want Debeers to know right now that I extend an olive leaf...

    Nelson: Branch. Olive branch.

Koloff: Olive branch. Sorry, English  still rough.

Col. DeBeers, I extend an olive branch to you in spirit of brotherhood. I would like to talk with you about realizing the greatness of America. And I hope you will one day become an American patriot like I now am.

If you won't do that, then you should go home to South Africa.

    Crowd pooped.

    Nelson: Nikita Koloff, everybody!

In-Studio: Nelson discussed Nikita wanting to talk with Col. DeBeers about embracing truth, justice and the American way.

Nelson then said another new wrestler was on his way and that man is Barry Windham.

    VIDEO:

Video opened with a shot of a vast Southwestern property with rolling hills, barns and a nice farm house.

Staning in the middle of an open range as Windham. He was wearing street clothes and had a mic.

But the AWA is the place to be now.

  10.
    JUNE 1990

AWA HQ - ST. LOUIS PARK, MN

    Jim Crockett's office...

In attendance were Jim Crockett, Bill Watts and Eric Bischoff.

Jim: Eric, we're looking to book a tour of the Pacific Northwest.

    Eric: Just Washington and Oregon?

    Jim: Yes.

We have a line-up of cities for you to try and book local arenas for house shows.

Jim handed Eric the cities they wanted booked.

    The cities were as follows:
    Seattle, WA

    Spokane, WA

    Yakima, WA

    Ellensburg, WA

    Portland, OR

    Eugene, OR

    Le Grande, OR (Eastern Oregon)

    Bischoff whistled.

Jim: That's seven cities. Let's try and close out with a double shot on the weekend.

Eric: I'll start doing some research and looking to book the arenas.

    Jim: Thanks, Eric.

Bill: Anything on Huey Lewis and the News if we book WrestleRock in 'Frisco next year?

Eric: Talked to their manager. They don't come cheap.

Bill: We figured that. What is their asking price?

    Eric: $75,000.

    Now Crockett whistled.

Jim: Gotta spend money to make money.

Bill: We've got time to try and hammer out a deal. Let's negotiate and see if we can get 'em a little cheaper.

Jim: Ticket prices for prime seats will be off the charts for this.

Bill: This could be the first AWA show in history to have a $100 dollar ticket price.

Jim: Question is: Would our fans buy it or be put off by it?

Bill: There's only one way to find out. Hell, the WWF charges more than that for their average-at-best WrestleManias.

I think it will be a challenge, but worth the shot.

Jim: We'll give you the date we're planning on for WrestleRock. Right now, the Cow Palace in 'Frisco is the front-runner.

Eric: I'll get on it after booking the Northwest cities.

    Jim: Thanks, Eric.

    Bill: Thank you.

Eric thanked Crockett and Watts for their time and left the office to get back to work.

Bill: Bischoff is a keeper. We need to hold on to him.

    Jim: That's true.

But someone else was eyeing the handsome, telegenic, aggressive young announcer, arena booking wizard and ad salesman.

Was the AWA about to be in for an unexpected shock?

    JUNE 1990

    WWF

Larry Zbyszko could finally breath a sigh of relief...

After jobbing to Koko B. Ware at house shows when he arrived in the company, Zbyszko wondered where he was headed in the WWF.

One night at a house show, Zbyszko approached road agent Tony Garea and asked why he was being booked to do the job every night.

Garea pulled Zbyszko aside and told him not to tell anyone what he was about to tell him.

Garea said Vince liked to test the new incoming talent to see if they would do a job when asked. Garea told Zbyszko he passed the test and did what he was told at the houses.

Zbyszko was now appearing on TV and winning squash matches. He was doing his old martial arts gimmick complete with nunchuks.

He was now on the way to defeating Koko Ware at Summer Slam.

And then, it was gonna be time for his first big feud in the WWF. And that feud was gonna be against Jake Roberts. And it would culminate in a match at WrestleMania.

It looked like Zbyszko had made the right decision to jump ship.

(I had read that Vince often had new talent come in and job to other wrestlers just to see how well they handled it. In a shoot interview, Tully Blanchard said that the Brain Busters were presented as a kick ass tag team on TV, but they were doing jobs at the house shows to the comedy team the Bushwhackers every night. That's where I drew my inspiration for this with Zbyszko upon his arrival in the WWF.)
