New York City Wrestling: Tradition Begins Anew... again.

Recommended Posts

As always, we ran against an American Indy show, this one headlined by the team of Madman Boone and Black Hat Bailey, who joined forces to defeat Grandmaster Phunk and Brett Biggz in a good match. SWF has fallen to a C+ across the board in the USA, losing Rich Money to TCW in the process. Money defeated Jack Griffith in his debut -- it was the third match on the show, but second best at B-, losing out only to Tommy Cornell successfully defending the World Title against Wrestling Machine #2 (B) Remo went on last, teaming with Liberty to beat The Tag Team Specialists in a disappointing match. This was, as the booking would lead you to believe, the end of the line for Steve Flash and Whistler in NYCW -- We're too small for the latter, and the former is, as expected -- too expensive to resign. The unfortunate thing is that Flash may hit that magic point of no return age of 42 before I can get the chance to re-up with him when his price goes down. New deals were reached with Michael Bull, Cal Sanders, Sammy The Shark, CB Geebee, Will Hayes, The Dog (due to make a repackaged return), Thomas "Captain" Morgan and the underpushed Rick Sanders. Bob Casey was also signed, and will be teaming with Captain Morgan. Big move up in Canada, as CGC tries to gear up for a run at NOTBPW, signing Steve Frehley to help them do so. He'll be working heel, probably as a nemesis to the DeColts. Jimmy Cox's deal with GCG must be coming to an end, as he's signed a per appearance deal with PGHW. Mean Jean Cattley struck gold back in MAW, booking himself to go over Steven Parker. Dread retired as an active competitor to start off October. WEXXV went away with him. King Kong Kennedy entered the business because he saw one of our shows. This is the first day I feel ashamed to be a part of NYCW. Patrick Cool apparently has heat with Tribal Warrior. That would be the most one sided backstage fight ever. Next will be defending the tag titles against a new tag team -- Captain Morgan and Cadet Casey: The Enterprise. In a battle of vanity, NYCW Heartthrob Will Hayes faces Team Mean's preening Wayne Davis. Mean Jean Cattley defends the Tri-State Title against Eisen Youth's Joey Rotten The Dog is no more! Darryl Freeman is returning, and will be facing a mystery opponent, more on that later. Tag team action in the main event, as Shady K and Rick Sanders team to face Bulldozer Brandon Smith and American Elemental. Here are some clues to the mystery opponent fighting against The Dog. -He was an Empire Champion in the original NYCW:TBA diary. -He works for a bigger promotion than us, but we were able to agree to terms. -One of his initials is J.

NYCW's Fall Classic Attendance: 881 Captain Morgan promo "Captain's Log: Stardate 10 7 2007, tonight I embark on a new mission: a mission to claim the NYCW Tag Team Championship. It is a mission I will not accept alone, as the academy has produced a cadet -- Cadet Casey -- to join me in my quest." That brought Casey out -- his outfit including a set of Spock ears. Rating: E NYCW Tag Team Titles The Enterprise (challengers) vs Next (champions) The same decent, if unspectacular match we've gotten from Vessey & Jett since they started. Casey and Morgan got some token offense in, but this was just north of a squash for Next, with a Vessey Driver ending Cadet Casey's debut. Winners, and still NYCW Tag Team Champions: Next Rating: D+ Mexican Wrestling Machine vs Cal Sanders[ Sanders got the better of the first encounter between these two, but the Machine was more aggressive this time around, an attitude change to go with the newer, masked, look. The other good news: no cease and desist from TCW! Sanders was jumped on early, but rallied back, utilizing his speed while keeping up with the Machine hold for hold, at least until the Machine broke a Gutwrench Suplex and delivered a sick spinebuster. That would lead to a Tiger Driver, enough to seal the deal for MWM. Winner: Mexican Wrestling Machine Rating: D Will Hayes Promo The NYCW Heartthrob took the moral high ground, talking to us about the price of vanity, and how Wayne Davis's ugliness on the inside was far deeper than anything superficial. The trips to Japan have made Hayes really philosophical, apparently. Rating: D- Wayne Davis vs Will Hayes We really, really should have booked this match sooner. The battle of the pretty boys was one of the best of my NYCW tenure, as Davis is already very, very good as a technician, Hayes being one of the best in that department. It was Hayes in control for most of the match, but the upset-minded Davis ultimately struck again, putting Hayes away with the Fisherman's Suplex that really needs a catchy name. Winner: Wayne Davis Rating: C Mean Jean Cattley promo Mean Jean was very, very happy at the success his team has enjoyed thus far. "I tell ya," Cattley started, "Going through NYCW is easier than I thought it was gonna be. Steve Flash, your hero, your inspiration, the heart and soul of NYCW, couldn't even make it past one of my boys. He left NYCW on a stretcher, you'll never see him here again." That got a lot of boos. I'd boo too, stupid Stomper. "Joey Rotten, boy, that's what you're in store for tonight. Other people may be impressed with your piercings, that goofy multi-colored hair, but where I come from, you'd be stomped into the ground for looking like that." Good southern fried heel work from MJC. Rating: D- NYCW Tri-State Title Joey Rotten (challenger) vs Mean Jean Cattley (champion) Very good match, with Joey excelling against an experienced opponent well versed in technical skills. Really spirited effort from Joey, who got some decent offense in, scoring some near falls through the match, but if you really think a guy embroiled in a tag feud is winning a singles title, you're mistaken The Mood Swing put an end to this one about ten minutes in. Winner: Mean Jean Cattley Rating: C- Bulldozer Brandon Smith Promo Very basic stuff from Dozer. He knows how close Shady K has gotten to dethroning him both times they wrestled for the title, he acknowledged that Rick Sanders is "hungrier than an offensive lineman at the end of the chow line" to get a title shot, but he's ready for any challenge, and couldn't have a better partner than American Elemental. D+ Darryl "The Man" Freeman vs Donnie Johnson You were expecting someone else? Of course not. CZCW standout Donnie J has finally gotten a full last name, and he celebrated by winning a glorified squash over Freeman, who is repackaged, but won't be working his way to the main event any time soon. Winner: Donnie J(ohnson) Rating: D+ Bulldozer Brandon Smith & American Elemental vs Shady K & "Tricky" Rick Sanders Good tag team action, with all four being well versed in something -- or in AE's case, everything -- and meshing into a decent match all around. Dozer threw around Sanders for a while, but fell victim to a blind tag to Shady, leading to a brief two on one, and ultimately the heels gaining the advantage. Hot tag to American Elemental midway through, with the masked man cleaning house before being clipped by Rick Sanders. It was down to Tricky Rick and the Bulldozer late, with Sanders gaining the surprise victory, popping the reigning Empire Champion with an International Object to get the pinfall. Winners: Shady K & Rick Sanders Rating: C Overall: C-

-Ryu Kajahara, one of the most charismatic men in wrestling, isn't going away now that his promotion is gone: he signed on with PGHW, where he'd do great as either an announcer or a road agent. PGHW also signed William Hayes to a written deal, meaning his bout with Wayne Davis was his last for NYCW. It was to be expected. -Speaking of USPW, they plucked Jim Force up off of the unemployment line -- he'll be a part of the midcard, he had been teaming with Captain USA in indy matches. Good thing. The sight of Jim Force setting up shop outside indy shows 2 1/2 hours before they start, desperately hawking his crappy merchandise was pretty pathetic. -Same people, different pairings for the American Indy show this month. 48 people packed in to see Brett Biggs and Black Hat Bailey to beat Madman Boone and Grandmaster Phunk. Other notable matches: Mikel "Pecs" Alonso beating Land Mass (D-) Honest Frank beating Roderick Remus (D+) and Harry Allen beating Whistler (D+) I flirted with signing Allen, but opted not to, given he wanted as much money as Donnie J for less overness and talent. -T-Rex left USPW, apparently sick of being Peter Valentine and Bruce The Giant's designated jobber. I'd look at signing him, but I like my main events to be somewhat good and I'd rather have the big slug who could amount to something (Gargantuan) than the big slug who is what he is (T-Rex). To be fair, T-Rex is the only person the beat Bruce this year, and the only person to get a draw from him too, Bruce is 27-1-1. Puerto Rican Power was brought in and immediately filled T-Rex's role of jobbing to Bruce the Giant in World Title matches. -Money's becoming an issue in NYCW too. We're still losing cash, and given the goals set by The Stomper, I have 14 months to make about $55,000 or I'll be fired. -Shady K hasn't been able to win the Empire Title from the Dozer, but he has struck up a strong friendship with Dharma Gregg. Strong Friendship... Riiiiiight. -Shhhh... be very very quiet. Hear that? It's SWF starting on the comeback trail, having crept back up to B- in two US markets. -Herb Stately signed on with BSC. Herb in a dirty old man gimmick could be something to see. -We lost just under $1300 this month, with a whopping $45 in merchandise sold. We need to produce some kind of calendar or video with Fern and Dharma to boost our cash reserves. Nah, Stomper would never go for it. -November retirements: Saionji Omura and Corporal Doom call it quits. Robert Oxford, Lee Wright (who strongly dislikes me for firing him) and Gesshin Nishihara look to be following suit. -Arrivals: Kanishoki, a big ol' sumo wrestler -Texas Pete brought Rocky Golden's TCW International Title reign to an end. -Networks are scheduling. Who will return to American TV -- SWF? TCW? DAVE? All 3? Possibly CZCW? AAA? NYCW? Nah. -Big Cat Brandon dethroned Eddie Peak to become top dog... er, top cat, in DAVE. Travis Century and Hell's Bouncer are joining up as a team called Raw Power. I've seen their ringwork, Raw Sewage would be more accurate. -Any hopes of signing Wolf Hawkins once we hit regional were dashed -- he's agreed to terms on a written deal with NOTBPW. Good, he just would've been pushed to the moon and left town two weeks after winning the title. Not that I'm bitter about Wolf's run with me in TEW05... not at all. -The first TV deal announced? TCW, who will air Main Event Wrestling on America Sports 1. Our Next Show: NYCW Natural Selection The good news for Cadet Casey: he's booked on next months show. The bad news: He's facing the Walking Catastrophe: Gargantuan! The winning team will be tag champions, the losing team will split up for good: It's the final chapter of the feud between Eisen Youth and Next. (Note: Cameron Vessey was recently signed to a contract extension, take that for what you will) Donnie Johnson faces off with Team Mean's Mario Heroic. Donnie may be looking to hop into a title picture here -- he recently lost his CZCW gold to Puerto Rican Power. American Elemental goes one-on-one with Team Mean member Wayne Davis. If Elemental wins, he gets a title shot against team captain Mean Jean Cattley Rick Sanders, by virtue of his pinfall of the champion last month, faces Bulldozer Brandon Smith for the title. Cadet Casey vs Gargantuan Gargantuan is by the looks of things pretty awful in the ring, but you’ve been building him as an unstoppable monster with quick easy squashes and I expect that to continue here. The only thing Casey is really good for is jobbing. NYCW Tag Titles, losing team splits up Eisen Youth vs Next(c) Whilst Next (Jett & Vessey) have been a slight disappointment, they’ve got a ton more potential than Eisen Youth. Poison can still have a mileage as a singles star (going after the Tri-State Belt) but C.B Geebee (Stan Manna) is the sort of mediocre cheap starting roster pick-up that becomes expendable as you begin to expand as a promotion. Mario Heroic vs Donnie Johnson Two guys that got a cup of coffee in the original diary, l too think you’ve got more of a guilt-trip over Heroic, so the enigmatic one goes over. American Elemental vs Wayne Davis Davis was impressive in his last match, but American Elemental has also looked good, so this is a very difficult one to call. Can’t really choose between them, so as a key part of the Junior Division in my BHOTWG diary, I’m going to back the masked man Empire Title Rick Sanders vs Bulldozer Brandon Smith(c) Sanders may have been surprisingly decent, but I just don’t buy into him being the one to end Bulldozers title reign.

Cadet Casey is in a whole lot of trouble. Next have more going for them than Eisen Youth. I prefer Mario to Don Johnson. And I like the idea of building Team Mean, so put Davis over. As for his finisher...A Wayne Manger...after all, it's a kind of 'cradle' suplex! No, don't worry...I'm not being serious!!

NYCW: Natural Selection Crowd: 863 Gargantuan vs Cadet Casey Fun fact: Bob Casey is also the name of the former governor of Pennsylvania, whose son -- the aptly named Bob Casey Jr -- just won a US Senate Seat last November. Not-so-fun fact: Gargantuan destroyed this Bob Casey. Winner: Gargantuan Rating: E Bulldozer Brandon Smith Promo The reigning Empire Champion made note that Rick Sanders will definitely, definitely have a trick up his sleeve tonight. "I might not have a trick, Rick, but I do have more heart in my pinky finger than you have in your entire body." So, Brandon Smith has a heart in his finger... that seems like something he should consult his doctor about. Rating: D+ NYCW Tag Team Titles Losing Team Must Split Up Eisen Youth (challengers) vs Next (champions) Very good match with Next taking control early and not really looking back from there. Furious action from bell to bell, though it was mostly one sided, and that was bad, bad news for NYCW's premiere punk duo. Joey Rotten was on the wrong side of an Implant DDT from Cameron Vessey for a close two, then Cam tagged out to Jacob Jett for a Jett Takeoff, which went for the three --- or it probably would have, if Jett hadn't missed the mark, leading to an Anarchy in NYC for the shocking upset. Winners, and new NYCW Tag Champions: Eisen Youth Rating: D+ Cameron Vessey stepped into the ring... and helped his now ex-partner up. As soon as Jett got to his feet, Vessey took him down with a wicked short clothesline, following up by bashing Jett about the head with rabbit punches and short elbow strikes, capping the beatddown off with a pair of Vessey Drivers and a loogie to add insult to injury. Rating: E Cameron Vessey grabbed the mic "You know, it was about time I dropped about 212 pounds of dead weight. My shoulders have never felt better." Boos rained down, as well as "Jett! Jett!" chants came raining down from the crowd in The Ministry. "Go ahead," Vessey cawed, "chant the name of a loser. Don't you people dare chant a name that has stood for greatness in this sport for twenty years: you people aren't worthy to chant 'Vessey,' 'Vessey." Rating: D- Wayne Davis vs American Elemental The Tri-State title qualifier got off to a rocking start, as American Elemental is quickly becoming the embodiment of the new NYCW: a wrestler with solid basics who knows how to take it to the mat. His good chemistry with a few upper card heels helps too, and was present here, in the best match of Davis Wayne Newton's young career. Elemental got the nod -- and a shot at Mean Jean's title -- after his new Elemental Lock submission -- a Standing Figure Four. Winner: American Elemental Rating: C- Dharma and Donnie Johnson are backstage Dharma is now in Donnie's corner, with the former Fly Boy now playing her boyfriend -- maybe that'll put those Shady K rumors to rest for good -- Dharma pepped her man up, telling him how she'd never forgive Mario Heroic or the rest of team Mean for what they did to her Uncle Steve. "I'll take care of them, babe" was all Donnie could contribute to the conversation. Rating: D Mario Heroic vs Donnie Johnson Donnie, statistically, should work out great in NYCW. Like American Elemental (an incredible success so far), he's a high flier who can work the mat. Unlike American Elemental, he always seems to disappoint for me, but I gave it another try this time around with similarly disappointing results. Not bad, but not very good either, Donnie picked up the win with his new submission finisher, a combination body scissors and full nelson, known as the Miami Vice. Winner: Donnie Johnson Rating: D+ NYCW Empire Title "Tricky" Rick Sanders (challenger) vs Bulldozer Brandon Smith (champion) BIG time surprise here, as Rick Sanders was given the ball and he took it to the house in what I consider to be the best match NYCW has seen in my tenure. Sanders played the conniving heel to perfection -- begging off when necessary, taking just enough shortcuts to be entertaining without seeming cartoonish, and bumping like a champ when Dozer unleashed his offense. Sanders was going to use a foreign object, but Smith kicked it out of his hand before it could be used, then finished Sanders off with the Dozer Driver: Smith retains in a very good bout. Winner, and still NYCW Empire Champion: Bulldozer Brandon Smith Rating: C+ Overall: D+

Ah the welcomed return of BriFidelity. The original TEW05 NYCW dynasty actually made me post on these boards long ago. Good to see you're still writing the good stuff. Nice swerve with Next's loss and the reheeling of Cameron Vessey. I've always dug him and hopefully Jett and Vessey as rivals will give them that boost that their tag team just didn't quite acheive. I still find Smith as dull as his last name but at least you've a good hook for using him and giving him such a gargantuan push. (pun intended.) I really hope for a Donnie J(ohnson - but where's his partner... Crockett or Tubbs... been too long since the TV show. Or even Nash Bridges!) American Elemental fued. Even if chances are AE goes over. Man, Cadet Casey it a potential comedic gold mine. "Don't send me in... I only *just* got this last name! I'm doooooomed."

Smith, dull as he can be, is in a good role right now as the do-gooder whitebread babyface, with Tricky Rick as the perfect foil. Glad to see everyone's enjoying this go-round with NYCW -- I'm doing my best not to do an impression of myself -- hopefully I can reinvent my old workers and find some new ones. American Elemental is the biggest surprise as a newcomer -- I was looking at the TEW05 data for EPW that's still sitting on my hard drive, and AE didn't have a single match from the origin point in December of 2005 to my endpoint in June of 2009. Nice work by arwink, going 5 for 5 and seeing the Eisen Youth upset coming. News and lineups... Decent American Indy show this month, with Phunk and Bailey going to a double countout and Whistler beating Stevie Grayson in C- matches. Steve Flash was on the card, teaming with Land Mass to beat Wiley Coyote. The only matches below D were American Machine beating Lazy Joe (D-) and Antonio beating Mad Dog Mortimer. The Big Problem was on the show in a D rated losing effort to Harry Allen. Problem definitely isn't coming back now, he's recently tested positive for steroids. Zimmy Bumfhole joins the list of defectors leaving SWF for TCW. Surprisingly, the bad blood between MAW owner Rip Chord and MAW referee Jay Fair was pushed aside, as he has agreed to a new deal as the Mid-Atlantic senior referee. Steve Frehley, apparently off of TCW's radar and working for CGC right now, has announced intentions to travel to Japan in search of work. Good move - that's where all the other big companies are, though he theoretically could be the one that makes 21CW a force if he wanted to go that way. Speaking of Japan -- it was a big night for gaijin as Canadian Dark Angel and American (and ex-NYCW worker) William Hayes upset Tean Dynasty 2000 to win the PGHW Elite Tag Team Series. By the way, as of week 3 in November, Dark Angel has wrestled 127 times, with a record of 77-44-6. He'll slow it down soon though, as he signed a written deal with NOTBPW. Back in SWF, Enygma has claimed the SWF World Title from Skull DeBones. Is DeBones DeParting? Time will tell. Elmo Benson, sticking with SWF on a PPA deal, has also signed to work for CGC. Lee Wright (who strongly dislikes me for firing him) and Robert Oxford officially retired, Wright leaving with a whimper, his final match being a loss to Primal Rage on an indy show in July. Oxford went out on his back too, as the Tag Team Specialists fell to Giant Tana & Ronnie V. Pain in his swan song. TBA 1.0 flashback: Robert Oxford wrestled well into 2009 with no signs of stopping, joining NYCW after TCW released him. He was most famous as an NYCW (actually EPW) Tag Champion with Barry Kingman, unofficially known as the Grumpy Old Men -- not quite as curmudgeonly, and not even 1/100th as entertaining as Oxford's team with Jim Force, but what can you do? TCW closed November with A Little South of Sanity, where they proved the newcomers will be treated fairly, as Remo Richardson ended Tommy Cornell's almost year long World Title reign. It was Cornell's first loss since February, where Wolf Hawkins -- now with NOTBPW -- defeated him in a non-title match on the series finale of TCW Total Wrestling. Other SWF refugees were similarly successful -- Zimmy Bumfhole won his debut against Aaron Andrews, Rich Money bested Genghis Rahn. Up next, we bid farewell to 2007 with NYCW: Best of the Best. While Eric Roberts and the late, great Chris Penn won't be there to join us, we do have a nice looking card. New tag champs Eisen Youth look to take on the newly formed South of the Border assassins: The Mexican Wrestling Machine and the newly signed crazed luchador, DeCipher. Next is no more, but the bad blood that came from their forced breakup will come to a boil when Cameron Vessey meets Jacob Jett one-on-one. Rick Sanders came very, very close to taking home the Empire title, now he has to fight his way back into contention: a victory over Kid Toma goes a long way in doing that. He's beaten Mario Heroic and Wayne Davis, now American Elemental gets a chance to do what Steve Flash couldn't and complete the trifecta: he's got a Tri-State Title shot against the meanest dog in the pack: Jean Cattley. Speaking of Davis, he may have fallen short against American Elemental last month, but his penchant for scoring the upset previously has earned him a crack at Empire Champ Bulldozer Brandon Smith: Can the champion continue to bulldoze the competition, or does Wayne Davis have what it takes to score the ultimate upset? Pick friendly lineup: Tag Titles: South of the Border Assassins vs Eisen Youth Cameron Vessey vs Jacob Jett Kid Toma vs Rick Sanders Tri-State Title American Elemental vs Mean Jean Cattley(c) Empire Title Wayne Davis vs Bulldozer Brandon Smith

Tag Titles: South of the Border Assassins vs Eisen Youth Eisen Youth have just won the belts back, and I just don't see the new team winning the belts. Then again stranger things have happened. Cameron Vessey vs Jacob Jett When it comes to post tag team split up feuds, I usually stump for the one who turned heel to win the first match up. Kid Toma vs Rick Sanders Even though Toma is the more exciting wrestler. I actually think Sanders has the more interesting character right now, and seeing as Sanders isn't horrible in the ring (just average) I think he'll get the nod here to be the one that goes over. Tri-State Title American Elemental vs Mean Jean Cattley(c) American Elemental rules, but Cattley makes an excellent heel champion, and with the main belt on a bit of a vanilla babyface (Smith) I can see Cattley holding onto the Tri-State belt for a little while longer. Empire Title Wayne Davis vs Bulldozer Brandon Smith Vanilla Babyface he might be, I just don't see Smith dropping the Empire Belt just yet. The dreaded poor chemistry note aside, Davis might be able to carry Smith to his best match yet as champion, despite both being relative rookies to the wrestling scene.

A mat clinic with Rotten and the Machine to start, as Joey is really standing out in a lot of these tag matches, and could have some definite life as a single once the team runs its course. Rating: D The meg... er, Next Explodes! Jacob Jett vs Cameron Vessey Big reaction for Jett, riding the wave of a huge face turn. Vessey plays complete heel, and it turns out that these two make better enemies than tag partners, as this one was very, very good. Cam Vessey got the advantage early and kept the pace nice and slow, the way an NYCW crowd is used to, but when Jett rallied back, it was all action, and the crowd didn't seem to mind too much. Jett had his former partner right where he wanted him -- down and out, with Jacob on top for the Jett Takeoff, but a fan jumped the rail and got up on the ring apron -- distracting Jett and referee Michael Bull long enough for Vessey to recover and hit a Belly-to-Belly Superplex for the pinfall victory. Winner: Cameron Vessey Rating: C Cameron Vessey took a mic and invited the man who helped him into the ring. "Man" is an overstatement: this was a kid who assisted Vessey -- didn't look a day over twenty. "If my dad and my uncle Bryan taught me anything, they taught me that it's important to associate yourself with the best, and cut loose any dead weight you have hanging around you." Vessey laid into Jett with some stomps, adding insult and injury at the same time. "I called up one of my pop's nearest and dearest friends, Mr. Rip Chord, and asked him if he knew anyone I could join forces with, someone who wouldn't let me down when I needed him. He suggested someone who knew what it was like to be associated with success and greatness from birth: Casey Valentine. Boos rained down -- maybe the crowd thought his uncle taught him how to work." Rating: E+ Rick Sanders vs Kid Toma Tricky Rick tried to lock up with Toma to start, with the Samoan Wildboy obliging, locking knuckles with one hand, only to take a thumb to the eye with the other. Rick Sanders tried to keep the match on the ground, but Toma brawled his way back into contention, then took a big advantage by reversing an Irish whip and hitting Sanders with a flying forearm off the rebound. Toma had his way with Tricky Rick for a while, planting him in the middle of the ring with a bodyslam, then going to the top. Sanders was able to move out of the way, and the Samoan's thick skull bounced off the mat. Thinking fast, Sanders planted Toma with a DDT, scoring the pin and making a definitive statement for another title shot. Winner: "Tricky" Rick Sanders Rating: D+ Bulldozer Brandon Smith promo Dozer is quickly becoming one of the best promo guys on the roster in addition to a decent hand in the ring. "I've been doing this wrestling thing for almost a year now, and I've learned that there are three kinda people in this sport -- the kind that can talk a good game, the kind that can fight, and the most dangerous of them all: the kind that can do both." Someone needs to show him a tape of USPW and introduce him to category 4: none of the above. "Wayne Davis, let's find out if you're just a good talker, or if you can do it all." Rating: D NYCW Tri-State Title American Elemental (challenger) vs Mean Jean Cattley (champion) Team Mean's ringleader stalled to start, teasing lockups only to bail. When Elemental did lock horns with the mean one, he made it count, twisting him into knots with some sound mat wrestling. Cattley, devious as ever, managed to free a hand and pull Elemental's mask so that the eye holes weren't aligned, giving the champ the distinct upper hand. Elemental eventually corrected the vision problem, but couldn't avoid the Mood Swing. What he could do, however, was kick out at two and 3/4, fighting his way back to elbow out of another Mood Swing and lock on an inside cradle for the flash pin. Winner, and new NYCW Tri-State Champion: American Elemental Rating: C+ Wayne Davis Promo Davis came out to discuss his role of the spoiler. "Everyone was shocked when I beat Will Hayes. They were shocked when I beat Steve Flash -- amazed when I ran both of them out of New York City Wrestling. How many times do I have to play the underdog before you all realize that I'm the odds on favorite, no matter who I'm wrestling?" Rating: C NYCW Empire Title Wayne Davis (challenger) vs Bulldozer Brandon Smith (champion) Wow. I wasn't expecting this big of a performance from Davis -- if for no other reason than his relative lack of popularity. Davis tried to work the finesse game, picking his shots and trying to keep his distance from the Dozer -- hitting dropkicks, armdrags and the like, but not even trying to chain anything together. Smith kept patient, making sure not to make any mistakes. The first mistake was Davis' -- a flying bodypress attempt led to him being caught by the big man, who drove him into the mat with the Dozer Driver for the pinfall victory. Winner, and still NYCW Empire Champion: Bulldozer Brandon Smith C+ Overall: C

BLZ Bubb managed #42, the now-retired Ryu Kajahara #99, Takayuki 2000 rounded out the list at #100, No NYCW Wrestlers made the cut. Mr. Evilness, the first ever JEF Universal champ, dropped the title to Puffy the Sand Iron Player. For a promotion that focuses on the MMA and realistic elements of wrestling, JEF makes some interesting roster calls. Raven Nightfall defeated Catherine Quine to claim the vacant AAA Femme Fatale Title. I would've thrown the belt on Quine, but AAA may be afraid she'll be the next one brought in to be fed to Victoria Stone. Alicia Strong's surge to the top of women's wrestling will be slightly delayed, as she suffered a cracked Sternum is a losing effort against her mentor, 5SSW champ Sensational Ogiwara. NEWZ! So much for the Puro dreams, Steve Frehley did the predictable thing and joined TCW. Indy update: This month saw Demon Spite and Brett Biggz unite to beat NYCW vets Black Hat Bailey & Grandmaster Phunk. Other NYCW highlights: Wiley Steinway & Roderick Remus beating Coyote Dynamite & Steve Flash, Land Mass beating Antonio, Honest Frank beating Andre Jones, Harry Allen beating The Big Problem, and Knuckles & Whistler beating Paul Steadyfast & Stevie Grayson in the mismatched tag partners showdown. The Last Stand -- the duo of Ronnie V. Pain & Giant Tana -- have dethroned The Machines in TCW. Steve Frehley debuted on the same edition of TCW Main Event, teaming with Remo Richardson & Ricky Dale Johnson to beat BLZ Bubb, Rich Money, & Tommy Cornell. Retirements this month: Just AAA's Helen Bach. Upcoming retirements are bigger: Eric Tyler, Sam Keith, & Danger Kumasaka. TBA 1.0 flashback: Thanks to the head booker always works PPA bug and inexplicable PPA deals with SWF and NOTBPW, respectively, Keith & Tyler were driving forces in NYCW's surge from fledgling regional promotion to surging cult promotion. Both men had runs as Empire Champion, with Keith being particularly instrumental in Mean Jean Cattley and Scout becoming huge stars, especially MJC, who garnered a #4 ranking in the 2008 PWH 100 thanks to an awesome series with Keith. AAA made a surprising move, opting not to renew the contract of Joanne Rodriguez. They lost their champ too, with Helen Wheels signing on to be a part of NOTBPW's women's division. Bonus TBA 1.0 Flashback: J-Ro was a big part of NYCW, wrestling the guys and doing a pretty good job of it, capturing the Tri-State title from Mean Jean Cattley and nearly dethroning MJC for the Empire Title on several occasions. NYCW Opens 2008 with Rush Hour, one of our signature shows. We have an exciting lineup: including... Cal Sanders vs Gargantuan. You gets what you gets. Jacob Jett was robbed of a chance to even the score with Cameron Vessey by the arrival of Casey Valentine. It's a battle of protege vs prodigy, as Rip Chord's prized pupil gets to take a shot at the Canadian wunderkind. Mean Jean Cattley has suddenly found himself without gold. Trying to make lemonade out of lemons, he's raising his sights and looking toward the Empire Title. To get into contention, however, he has to contend with Donnie Johnson, still looking to cleanse NYCW of Team Mean for Dharma. Underhanded win or not, Cameron Vessey has made an impression on NYCW executives by virtue of his win over Jacob Jett. That impression has led to a chance at taking home the Tri-State Title, but he'll have a tough mountain to climb against the white-hot American Elemental. Nothing has been settled between Rick Sanders and Bulldozer Brandon Smith -- each one has been able to score a pinfall victory over the other -- the rubber match will have high stakes: The Empire Title is up for grabs. Pickmaker friendly lineup: Cal Sanders vs Gargantuan (edit: Typo fixed: thanks Tigerkinney) Jacob Jett vs Casey Valentine Donnie Johnson vs Mean Jean Cattley Tri-State Title Cameron Vessey vs American Elemental(c) Empire Title Rick Sanders vs Bulldozer Brandon Smith(c)

Cal Sanders vs Darryl "The Man" Freeman In your preview you say it's Sanders vs Gargantuan, either way however I think Sanders does the job here. Jacob Jett vs Casey Valentine This is the one I'm most split on, on one hand Jett getting a win back would balance things out about, but I can see Vessey returning the favour and helping Valentine, sneak the win over Jett. Donnie Johnson vs Mean Jean Cattley Partly a personal thing here, as I'm just not a fan of Donnie J, who I find to be the epitome of a mediocre Cruiserweight and partly because MJC has ambitions of going after the Empire title, so you need to keep him looking strong. Tri-State Title Cameron Vessey vs American Elemental(c) Firstly I can't see Elemental losing the title in his first defence and secondly Vessey is no-where near his level. Empire Title Rick Sanders vs Bulldozer Brandon Smith(c) Though you've managed to make me interested in Rick Sanders (someone I never took much noticed of before) with his sneaky heel character, I don't see him being the one to end Bulldozer's reign on top of the NYCW pile. NYCW: Rush Hour Crowd: 1,000 (sellout) Gargantuan vs Cal Sanders Time of death: 3:47 Winner: Gargantuan Rating: E Jacob Jett Promo "Two straight months." Jett didn't look happy. "Two straight months I've been left on the mat laying. Beaten down. Embarassed. Made to look like a fool by Cameron Vessey and his buddy Casey." Jett looked even less happy. "It'd be easy for me to go out and find backup -- real easy to fight fire with fire and have someone run in tonight and club Casey from behind, but I'm not going to do that. No, I'm going to do the honorable thing and beat Casey Valentine right in the middle, 1-2-3. And after that, Cameron, I'm coming for you." Rating: D- Mean Jean Cattley promo "Y'know what the old saying tells us: You always hear people say life gives ya' lemons, squirt some of the juice in someone's eye. American Elemental -- ya got me boss -- savor it, it don't happen often. Team Mean's comin' for ya, boy, and you ain't goin' make it very far with that pack'a dogs on your tail. But first, we got someone else to deal with. Seems like pretty little Dharma's got a problem wit' what my boys did to ol' Uncle Steve, and now her pretty little boyfriend wants a piece of Mean Jean. Now maybe that suntan lotion's made your brain go goofy, but if you think some beach bum's gonna get the better of Mean Jean -- Dharma darlin, you're dumber than ya look." Rating: D- Casey Valentine vs Jacob Jett Jett was a house of fire to start, taking down young Darry... er, Casey Valentine and firing shots onto the kinda-sorta 2nd generation star until he took a breather. The breather didn't last long as Jett hit Casey with a plancha (a Plancha in NYCW? Times they are a-changin'), much to the delight of the crowd. Valentine was able to slow it down for a while, evening things up a bit, but he eventually succumbed to the Turbine Kick and a Jett Takeoff for the victory. Winner: Jacob Jett Rating: D+ Dharma and Donnie J were talking backstage... "Be careful out there. You saw what these creeps did to your Uncle. If you wanna stay in the broadcast booth -- I understand." "I'm not gonna hide from them. Uncle Steve wouldn't want me to hide from them. I wouldn't want to look at myself in the mirror if I hid from them." "Hey! That's a good idea." "What?" Donnie went on to look at himself in the mirror for a while... a disturbingly long while. "And Cattley thinks he can beat someone who looks like this." Rating: C- Donnie Johnson vs Mean Jean Cattley Another "ehhh" performance from the fly boy, although the pastel blue tights are a nice touch. Donnie tried to get the babyface energy though, but the heel work from Cattley far outpaced him. He doesn't have to cheat to get a reaction -- a look, the way he acts after landing a big move -- you NEED to hate him. Donnie locked on the Full Nelson portion of the Miami Vice, but a mule kick to Donnie's Johnson stopped that in its tracks, with a Mood Swing finishing the job. Winner: Mean Jean Cattley Rating: D+ Bulldozer Brandon Smith promo "Tricky Rick Sanders..." The mention of the challenger's name started up a "Tricky Dick!" Tricky Dick" chant from the rowdier section of the crowd -- the part of the audience we share with DAVE. "I think these people are right on, to tell ya the truth. Sanders. You're a snake, a cheat, and a lot of other things that aren't suitable to say in front of women and children." Yeah, just like these chants. "Rick, bring every trick ya' got, because you're standing on the pavement, and here comes the Bulldozer." And just like that, a mediocre catchprase is born. Rating: D+ NYCW Tri-State Title Cameron Vessey (challenger) vs American Elemental (champion) American Elemental basically has good chemistry with the entire roster at this point -- I'm beginning to believe he could pull a C caliber match with Donnie or Gargantuan at this point. Well, maybe not Gargantuan. Vessey tried to make it a slugfest, but Elemental stuck to his gameplan and looked to be well on his way to a title retention when Casey Valentine hit the ring. Before the Next Generation could capitalize on a 2-on-1, Jacob Jett came out to even the score. The unforseen equalzier distracted Vessey, and Elemental capitalized, hitting a German Suplex for the pinfall. Winner, and still NYCW Tri-State Champion: American Elemental Rating: C+ NYCW Empire Title Rick Sanders (challenger) vs Bulldozer Brandon Smith (champion) Good, but not quite as good as their previous encounter. Dozer was a house of fire to start, with Sanders taking tons and tons of bumps for the champ early. A running powerslam almost ended it early, but Sanders survived, then thrived when he caught Smith with a kneelift out of another Irish whip. Things were ping ponging back and forth until Dozer missed a clothesline and hit Michael Bull. With the referee out cold, Smith planted Sanders with the Dozer Driver and would've had a five count. Eventually, Gargantuan hit the ring, pulling Dozer off of Tricky Rick, lifting him up effortlessly and hitting the Ultimate Backbreaker. Sanders crawled over to cover Dozer as Bull recovered enough to make the count. 1 2 3. Tricky Rick pulled off the shocker. Now that is a surprise. I am guessing that Bulldozer either signed with TCW or NOTBPW , or he is doing a japan tour with WLW or another promotion that runs shows on saturdays. Or you could just have the only Cornellverse game where the destiny stat actually decides Rick Sanders will be a major star :D

Take it from me, a TEW Dynasty Legend™, working 50+ hour weeks is NOT conducive to diary writing. anyway... The American indy show hit the southeast, where it drew an amazing crowd of 11. There were literally more people on the show than in the crowd. The main event saw Black Hat Bailey & Grandmaster Phunk team up to defeat Demon Spite & Brett Biggz (C-) Other NYCW vets: Fox Mask (missed him not being renewed by CZCW) beat The Masked Mauler (contract not renewed) American Machine beat Wiley Steinway, Rod Remus beat Land Mass, Knuckes & Harry Allen beat Stevie Grayson & Whistler, Coyote Dynamite beat Steve Flash, and Paul Steadyfast over The Big Problem. One of the luckiest guys in wrestling has seen his luck run out: Sammy Bach and Emma Chase have parted ways. I'm crossing my fingers for a May-September romance between Emma and Eric Tyler -- maybe then he'll finally crack a smile. In just his 5th loss in 13 months, Bruce the Giant dropped the USPW World Title to Warlord Pain. Steven Parker won the second Rip Chord Invitational, beating last year's winner Mainstream Hernandez in the finals. Sam Keith's career went out with a whimper, losing two matches to Big Smack Scott before beating Akima Brave in his final bout. Eric Tyler left a loser, teaming up with Chris Caufield to lose to Eddie Peak & Randy Bumfhole at DAVE Back in Black in a "loser of the fall leaves DAVE challenge." Collateral Damage, the new team of Rich Money & Zimmy Bumfhole, have claimed the TCW World Tag Team Titles. Larry Wood took charge of new outfit Mexican Hardcore Wrestling. We return to the Boogie Down next month with NYCW: Showdown in the Bronx. It's a rookie seemingly on the fast track to the top against a veteran who never got his due when Wayne Davis meets Cal Sanders. The Next Generation meets The Enterprise in a match booked to see if we can fool trekkies into coming to the show expecting to see Patrick Stewart & Jonathan Frakes vs William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy in tag action. Gargantuan faces his biggest test yet: a very, very angry Bulldozer Brandon Smith. American Elemental has sworn to take on all comers in defending the Tri-State title, that apparently includes Sammy the Shark, who -- despite not wrestling recently, has weaseled his way into an open contract. Jacob Jett will have to wait one more month to get his hands on Cameron Vessey. This month, he's drawn Shady K, a man who almost became Empire Champion. Speaking of the new Empire champion: Rick Sanders defends against the man who took him to the limit (everybody to the limit) two months ago: Kid Toma. That makes the card look like this: Cal Sanders vs Wayne Davis The Next Generation vs The Enterprise Tri-State Title Sammy the Shark vs American Elemental (c) Bulldozer Brandon Smith vs Gargantuan Shady K vs Jacob Jett Empire Title Kid Toma vs Rick Sanders (c)

Cal Sanders vs Wayne Davis I love Cal, but he seems to be your jobber of choice. The Next Generation vs The Enterprise That should be an a-duh. Tri-State Title Sammy the Shark vs American Elemental (c) Can't have Elemental drop the belt yet. He just got it. Bulldozer Brandon Smith vs Gargantuan This is a tough one. I used Gargantuan as a monster heel and he worked decently well. But Smith needs a win if he's going to stay in the main event. It's a tough one, because Garg could either go to the title and Smith could knock him off, or Garg will stay as an opening squasher. Shady K vs Jacob Jett I think Jett has more staying power than Shady. Empire Title Kid Toma vs Rick Sanders (c) Welcome to the Tricky Rick era. He's got plenty of tricks up his sleeve. Welcome back. I was quite a fan back in the old days.
