Preview for January 5th, 1998 It's a new year and Nitro has a new look!!! This week Nitro comes to you from the Thompson-Boling arena with the biggest show ever! For the first time in the history of WCW, Bret Hart will lace up the boots on Nitro! Facing "The Hitman" will be a man he is very familiar with, Kevin Nash. Will Hart get a win in his first match with WCW? Or will Kevin Nash and the NWO spoil "The Excellence of Execution's" big night. Last week Nitro closed with Hulk Hogan and Sting brawling all over the arena. This week Championship Committee representative JJ Dillon has a huge announcement to start off Nitro regarding Sting, Hogan, Souled Out and the WCW World Heavyweight Title. Speaking of Sting, this week he will take on a wreslter of the NWO's choosing. Who will the NWO choose to face Sting in this non-title match? Also this week Chris Benoit takes on Steven Regal. Vicious and Delicious will face one of the greatest tag teams in history, Harlem Heat. DDP will look to keep his hot streak going when he steps in the ring with Wrath, and Disco Inferno and Alex Wright face The Public Enemy. Watch WCW Monday Night Nitro LIVE! on TNT!
Hooked me with the pictured I'm defitnely reading this and who knows if get 5 shows up in April I would nominate this in Prime's Monthly RWDOTM.
No offense to Josh, but seriously, if a pretty graphic is all it takes to get your nomination, then I'm going to have to ignore your nominations from now on. That aside, you've put some effort into this, so I'll keep watching.

From Thompson-Boling Arena with 30,000 fans in attendance! As Nitro comes up a video plays showing last week where Hogan and Sting fought to a no contest and brawled as the show went off the air. Time: 2 Minutes Rating: A The thirty second Nitro open runs set to Nitro’s new theme music, Fuel by Metallica - The pyro goes off showing off the new set. As the pyro finishes JJ Dillon is seen in the ring. JJ Dillon: I’m going to keep this short and sweet! Eric Bischoff, just because Souled Out is an NWO pay-per-view doesn’t mean you have the right to do whatever you want. Like it or not the WCW World Heavyweight Title is a WCW title and we will determine who faces Sting at Souled Out! Here’s the deal! Starting tonight on Nitro we will be having an eight man tournament to determine who will be the true number one contender to Sting and his WCW World Heavyweight title. And it starts tonight in our main event between Kevin Nash and Bret “The Hitman” Hart! Schiavone: WOW! I wonder who the other participants in this tournament are going to be? Tonight is truly the greatest night in the history of our sport! Time: 2 Minutes Rating: B+ The Public Enemy vs. Disco Inferno and Alex Wright - As JJ Dillon leaves the ring the music of Public Enemy hits and they make their way to the ring - Disco and Wright make their way to the ring dancing the entire way - These two teams have very different styles - Nitro kicks off with a bang with a good tag match that is going back and forth - We join the match near its conclusion Schiavone: These two teams are really showing off for the Championship Committee tonight! Heenan: You’re right…Alex and Disco have shown great dancing skills Tenay: I think he was referring to their wrestling Brain. Heenan: I knew that Tenay! - These two teams are battling back and forth, all four men are standing toe to toe in the ring exchanging punches. All of a sudden two men come from the crowd and lay all four competitors out! The ref calls for the bell and this match is a no contest! Schiavone: That’s Raven and Saturn! Tenay: They’ve just ruined a great match! Heenan: It looks like Raven has a microphone. Winner: NO CONTEST Time: 7:34 Match Time ~ 10:00 Total Time Rating: B- - Raven has the stick and he sits in the corner Raven: I know everyone is wondering why I’m out here. Well that is an easy answer. Here we are, another week and I’m without a match. WHAT ABOUT ME….WHAT ABOUT RAVEN!!! Crowd: BOO! Raven: In the previous company I was in I was a world champion. Tenay: In a run down bingo hall! Raven: I was an icon, a legend in the making, and I came to this god forsaken place to be passed over in favor of old men and Mexican jumping beans! Crowd: BOO! Raven: Well, no longer will I sit in the shadows no longer will I be abused and misused! *Raven stands* Raven: It is my time! The time for Raven! So I am issuing a challenge to any of the boys in the back! If you think you’ve got what it takes to challenge me then get out here! I’m not leaving this ring until I get a match! Time: 2 Minutes Rating: B+ - Very familiar music hits and Rey Mysterio Jr. makes his way out with a microphone in hand. Mysterio: So Raven, you say that you’ve been looked over for Mexican jumping beans?!?!? Well I guess I’m one of those Mexican jumping beans that you are talking about and tonight…I will show you why us Mexican jumping beans are better than you! - Mysterio’s music hits while Raven smiles in the ring Schiavone: Apparently Rey Mysterio Jr. took offense to that comment that Raven made. Tenay: As he should have! Tonight Rey will show Raven what the cruiserweights are all about! Time: 1 Minute Rating: B+ - We cut backstage where Harlem Heat are standing by with “Mean” Gene Okerlund Okerlund: Booker T, Stevie Ray, Harlem Heat! Tonight you two face off against NWO members Buff Bagwell and Scott Norton, Vicious and Delicious. Booker you are the WCW Television champion, but you still plan on competing in the tag division? Booker T: That’s right sucka! You see me and my brother are the best tag team in the history of professional wrestling we are seven time WCW Tag Team champions, but it’s been almost two years since we last had those belts. After we beat Vicious and Delicious tonight we want our tag team belts back! Okerlund: Stevie Ray your thoughts? Stevie Ray: BAGWELL! NORTON! TONIGHT YOU FIND OUT WHAT A HARLEM BEAT DOWN IS LIKE!!! Booker T: Now can you dig that….SUCKA!!! - Harlem Heat walk out of frame Okerlund: Strong words from the seven time WCW Tag Team Champions. Time: 2 Minutes Rating: B- “The Crippler” Chris Benoit vs. Lord Steven Regal These two men have been in the ring many times before and put on great matches. Tonight it was no different as they put on a technical showcase. In the end “The Crippler” won with a Northern Lights Suplex. As he was celebrating his victory Benoit looked right in the camera and flashed the four fingers signifying The Four Horsemen. Winner: Chris Benoit Time: 11:37 Match Time ~ 14:00 Total Segment Rating: B - We cut backstage to the locker room of the NWO… Bischoff: JJ Dillon is making a mocker of OUR pay-per-view! Hogan: That’s right brother! Souled Out is the night that we are in control! We have the final say! I don’t know who that power crazy JJ Dillon thinks he is! Hall: Hey yo! I say we go take care of him right now! Hogan: Yeah brother! Nash: Now just hold on one second. I kind of like the idea of running through this tournament and making sure gold winds up around the waist of the NWO. Bischoff: Well that is good thinking. I did hear that on top of you being in the tournament so is Scott Hall, Randy Savage and of course my man Hollywood Hogan! Hogan: Good thinking Nash! If we all win our first round matches then you can all lay down for me and make sure that I get my title shot! - Nash rolls his eyes Nash: Well Hollywood that’s not exactl… Hall: (interrupting) What the big man was going to say is, let’s just take care of the first round and see how everything goes. - A WCW staff member walks by and hands Bischoff an envelope Bischoff: What’s this? Staff Member: This came from JJ Dillon - Bischoff rips it open and reads it Hogan: What’s it say brother? Bischoff: It says that next week the number one contenders tournament will continue when Randy Savage faces Lex Luger and Scott Hall faces……….The Giant. - The camera zooms in on Hall as his eyes get huge! Time: 2 Minutes Rating: B+ - The camera cuts backstage where Bret Hart is arriving Schiavone: There he is! The man who will me his WCW in ring debut tonight against Kevin Nash! Tenay: “The Excellence of Execution”…tonight…on NITRO! Time: 1 Minute Rating: B+ Vicious and Delicious vs. Harlem Heat This match will go a long way in deciding the number one contenders to The Steiner Brother’s WCW Tag Team Titles. Harlem Heat looked a little bit off in this match. It’s obvious that something isn’t quite the same as it used to be between these two. Vicious and Delicious were able to control Stevie Ray for most of the match until a hot tag was make to Booker T. We join the match near its conclusion. Schiavone: Booker T is in and the TV champion is cleaning house! Tenay: Get them Booker! Heenan: You can tell Booker T is fresh as he is destroying Buff and Norton! - Booker T hits Bagwell with the axe kick! - 1…….2…………….. - The ref was pulled out of the ring by Norton Schiavone: What a low move by the NWO. Heenan: I’m no NWO fan, but I do say do whatever it takes to win! - Konnan runs out from the crowd and grabs Booker T’s TV Title belt Schiavone: What is he doing out here?!?!?!? - Konnan gets in the ring and clobbers Booker with the belt! Konnan pulls Buff on top of Booker. - The ref slides in the ring and Stevie Ray is preoccupied with Scott Norton outside the ring - 1……….2……………….3! Schiavone: Vicious and Delicious and The NWO have stolen another victory! - Stevie Ray looks at the ring in disbelief as his team has just lost. Winners: Vicious and Delicious Time: 6:55 Match Time ~ 10:00 Segment Time Rating: B- - We cut backstage where WCW cruiserweight champion Ultimo Dragon is walking around - All of a sudden out of nowhere Eddie Guerrero attacks Ultimo Dragon with a chair Tenay: WOW! What a sore loser Eddie Guerrero is! Schiavone: That’s right Mike last week Eddie lost the WCW Cruiserweight title to Ultimo Dragon right here on Nitro! Heenan: Yeah and Dragon cheated! Eddie is simply returning the favor! Schiavone: Dragon did no such thing! Heenan: You just weren’t looking Schiavone! - Eddie leaves after shouting at Dragon and he is left a bloody mess. Time: 2 Minutes Rating: B- Diamond Dallas Page (WCW US Champion) vs. Wrath Can you say squash! DDP totally dominated Wrath! Page hit all of his patented maneuvers before finally hitting Wrath with a HUGE Diamond Cutter for the three count. Winner: Diamond Dallas Page Time: 2:44 Match Time ~ 5:00 Total Time Rating: B Schiavone: DDP continues to show why he is one of the generals of WCW! - The Outsiders run out from the back and get in the ring with DDP - For a moment DDP fights them off until the numbers game catches up to him Tenay: What a low down dirty move by the NWO. Heenan: Well, DDP has proven to be a huge thorn in the NWO’s side so I can’t say I blame them. Schiavone: What are you talking about Brain there is now way this type of behavior can be condoned! - Hall hits DDP with The Outsiders Edge!!! - Nash picks DDP up and is setting him up for the Jackknife! - Suddenly The Giant comes sprinting from the back! Schiavone: IT’S THE GIANT!!! Tenay: Hall’s opponent for next week is here to make the save! - Nash drops DDP as The Outsiders escape the ring as The Giant is getting in Schiavone: You can run now, but there will be nowhere to hide next week whenever The Giant is standing across the ring from you Scott Hall!!! - The Giant picks DDP up and the crowd cheers the two WCW faces! Time: 5 Minutes Rating: B+ - A video begins playing with a black crow featured flying in a dark sky. Narrarator: When all appeared to be lost - Shot of Hogan with WCW belt spray painted Narrarator: When and empire seemed to be crumbling - Nash throwing Rey Mysterio head first into a trailer Narrarator: When the ranks of the army were slipping - Shots of different wrestlers joining the NWO Narrator: One man stood silent and strong! - Shots of Sting taking down the NWO Narrarator: And now he has restored the greatest prize to its rightful place - Shots os Starrcade 97 and Sting beating Hogan followed by Sting with the belt Narrarator: The time is here…a leader has arisen…WCW LIVES!!! - Final shot of Sting standing in the rafters with the WCW belt Time: 2 Minutes Rating: B+ Raven vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. This match has to be considered the first real Match of the year candidate! These two guys went out and gave it their all with so many false finishes and near falls that the fans were on the edge of their seats. We join the match near its conclusion… Schiavone: Rey Mysterio has really shown up here tonight! Heenan: Raven isn’t doing bad either, don’t forget about that. - Raven is controlling the match Tenay: It appears that Raven is calling for the Evenflow! - Raven gets Rey set up but he slips out Rey bounces off the ropes…jumps…Frankensteiner! Tenay: That came out of nowhere! - 1…..2…………3!!! Schiavone: Rey Mysterio Jr. has done it! He’s beaten Raven! Tenay: This has to be considred an upset! Winner: Rey Mysterio Jr. Time: 15:55 Match Time ~ 18 Minutes Total Time Rating: A* - Saturn and the rest of The Flock hit the ring and begin beating up on Mysterio - Saturn locks on The Rings of Saturn - Kidman goes up and hits the Seven Year Itch - Raven is back up and he has a chair Schiavone: This is just sick! Rey Mysterio is defenseless! - Suddenly from the back Chris Jericho comes running out with a chair and runs off the flock, but not before Raven delivers a HUGE blow to Rey Mysterio Jr. - Schiavone: OH THAT WAS HEINOUS!!! - Jericho checks on Mysterio in the ring Time: 3 Minutes Rating: B- - Eric Bischoff is backstage - Bischoff: Tonight the NWO had the chance to select anyone to face off against Sting. At Souled Out Sting will be facing an NWO member for the WCW World Heavyweight Title and we are looking at this as a chance to soften him up. Whenever I asked the guys who wanted to face Sting tonight there was a lot of discussion as every member of The NWO wanted Sting. Then we began breaking it down. Nash has a match against Bret Hart tonight, so he’s out. Scott Hall has a match against The Giant next week, so he needs to focus on how he’s going to embarrass that NWO reject, so he’s out. The Macho Man has a match against Flexy Lexy next week, so he’s out. Norton and Buff have already wrestled, so they’re out. Then of course there’s Hollywood Hogan, Hollywood doesn’t want to humiliate Sting again, so he’s out. When we thought it over there was only one man in The NWO who has the ring experience and tenacity to take Sting out. That man is…………VIRGIL! So next Sting will fall to Virgil! Time: 3 Minutes Rating: C+ Sting (WCW World Heavyweight Champion) vs. Virgil Virgil never stood a chance. The match literally consisted of the following…all Sting offense. Punch Punch Kick Bodyslam Pickup Irish Whip Stinger Splash Scorpion Deathdrop Scrorpion Deathlock Virgil taps Winner: Sting Time: 1:49 ~ 4:00 Total Time Rating: C+ - After the match Sting celebrates his victory Schiavone: It’s apparent that no one in The NWO wanted to face Sting so Virgil was sent out as the sacrificial lamb. Tenay: And he was sacrificed! Heenan: An absolutely dominate performance by The Stinger! Time: 1:00 Rating: B+ - We cut backstage where Gene Okerlund is Okerlund: At this time welcome my guest…Bret “The Hitman” Hart! - Hart walks into frame Okerlund: Tonight you face off against Kevin Nash in the first round of the tournament to determine the number one conteder to the WCW World Heavyweight Title. What are your thoughts headed into this match? Hart: Well first of all it’s going to finally feel good to get back in the ring and wrestle! People have been asking me all week, “Hitman what about the ring rust?”, well let me just say this, they don’t call me the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be for nothing! Kevin Nash this isn’t the first time that you and I have gone around and tonight will be no different than the other times I’ve faced you. Kevin Nash tonight….you tap out to The Sharpshooter! - Davey Boy Smith and Jim Neidhart walk into frame! Okerlund: Davey Boy Smith…Jim Neidhart…what are you doing here? Smith: It’s simple Gene. We want to be in the best wrestling organization in the world. That’s why we’re here in WCW. Me and The Anvil here have decided that we want tag team gold. So we’re here to issue a challenge. Vicious and Delicious earlier you beat one of the best tag teams in the history of pro wrestling, next week The Anvil and I want to see you in the middle of the ring! Okerlund: A huge challenge from Davey Boy Smith and Jim Neidhart - Hart grabs the microphone from Gene Hart: I just want to make one thing clear. Sting, I respect you, but after I beat Nash and then win two more matches to become the number one contender…I’m coming for that belt. Sting when we meet in that ring I gurantee it will be a classic, but I also gurantee that I will walk out the new WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Okerlund: Thank you Bret Hart! Our main event is NEXT! Rating: Bret Hart: A ~ Davey Boy Smith: C- Total Time: 6:00 Number One Contenders Tournament Bret Hart vs. Kevin Nash Bret Hart carried Kevin Nash to a great match. The second classic match on Nitro tonight! Hart tried to work over the knees in the match while Kevin Nash showcased his power and tried to use it to stop Hart. We join the match near it’s conclusion… - Nash has Hart in the corner Heenan: He’s sizing him up - Nash goes for the elbow, but Hart slips out - Hart hits an inverted atomic drop Schiavone: That’s gonna hurt! Tenay: Get him Bret! - Bret bounces off the ropes and clotheslines Nash, but Nash is still on his feet - Bret off the ropes again…….FLYING CLOTHESLINE!!! Nash goes down! Schiavone: The big man is off his feet and Hart is going for The Sharpshooter! - Hart locks on the hold and Nash is screaming in pain! - Scott Hall runs down from the back Schiavone: Oh no! Hall is going to ruin this match! - Hall is on the ring apron -Hart let’s go of the hold and blast Hall with a big right hand and the crowd goes crazy!!! Heenan: Hart is in control! - Hart locks The Sharpshooter back on Nash!!! - Nash is screaming in pain Tenay: Is Nash going to tap? - Nash has now been in the hold for over thirty seconds - Nash………..TAP! TAP! TAP! Schiavone: Nash tapped! Bret Hart has won this match! Tenay: What a huge return for “The Hitman”! Winner: Bret “The Hitman” Hart Time: 19:31 Match Time ~ 22:00 Total Time Rating: A* - Bret Hart is celebrating in the ring! Schiavone: Tonight is a historic night, Bret Hart made his in ring debut with WCW! Heenan: And what a way to debut! Tenay: This has got to be one of the best moments in the history of Nitro! Schiavone: Folks, if you thought this week was good, just wait until next week. Luger vs. Savage and Scott Hall vs. The Giant!
