Coastal Zone - The Doc Watson Chronicles

December 31st, 2007: I was sitting in my exam room backstage at the Snake Pit after seeing a few of the guys that had suffered bumps and bruises during Christmas Cage Chaos when Cliff poked his head through the door like he always did. Me: Come on in Cliff. You ready for the rundown on how the guys are doing or did you get hurt when Plague put Al Coleman through the announce table tonight? Cliff looked a little saddened… Cliff: Nah I am fine Doc… You can give me the update on how the guys are doing later if you like… I was just looking for a place to hide out for awhile mind if I join you in here? I welcomed him in and handed him a cold beer… We had finished off a 6 pack together lots of times in the past but I had never seen him like this… Me: What seems to be the problem Cliff? I thought the guys did a good job tonight and no one got hurt beyond a couple of bruises so it made my life pretty easy. Cliff: How long have you been taking care of our guys Doc? Me: I think it has been about 7 or 8 years Cliff why? Cliff: When I started all this back in 1990 I had a plan. I was going to offer something that no one else could out there in the wrestling scene - Action Packed Combat… My vision was to have guys that were athletic, speedy, exciting, durable, and could make one another look really special in the ring. I wanted to be the opposite of SWF and these hardcore/garbage promotions. I wanted to take these smaller more athletic guys out there and give them a forum to be stars; not just cannon fodder for Eisen’s giant goons that need managers just to talk for them they are so dumb… I wanted to produce an in-ring product so exciting that people wouldn’t even care if guys could cut a promo, drive a monster truck into the arena, or have really cool fireworks during their entrance… Then he paused for a minute lost in his own thoughts… Cliff: You are a successful guy Doc… Do you think I am succeeding in making this promotion what I wanted it to be back then? Me: Woah… Do you really think that I am the right guy to be giving you advice on your business? Cliff: Sure you are! You are the most educated person within 5 miles of here… You may not know how to run a wrestling promotion but I have heard you talk to the guys and they respect you. I respect you and besides you aren’t caught up in all the hoopla and bullsh*t that surrounds me in this business. What do you really think about where things are headed based on my vision? Me: Well I remember when I got here the shows focused a lot more on in-ring talent and excitement. I don’t think you have gotten too far from that but we are certainly doing plenty of promos and angles now than we weren’t doing back then… I paused to wait for his reaction hoping that he wasn’t pissed with what I had to say – I mean he asked me… Cliff: I know we have done a lot more talking and acting lately than I had ever wanted… But we hired the two “name” guys because they were so popular from their run in TCW and we hated not to hand them the mic when they got here. Problem is now guys like Snap Dragon want to talk up their matches too… Me: Yeah, Dragon is a heck of a high-flyer and could probably carry this promotion the way you had originally envisioned but if you hand him the microphone he looses credibility with the fans. Cliff: Don’t get me wrong Doc… Jimmy and Donnie have done a lot to help us make the progress we made the last couple years especially as it related to exposure but Jimmy especially isn’t the kind of in-ring worker I was looking to build around back in 1990. Me: Cliff, you know I mark out for some fast paced hard hitting action. I have been following your product since you first started producing DVDs back in the late 90’s. Cliff: Yeah, I still remember when you came up to me after one of our shows and asked if we needed a company physician. Me: It isn’t too late to make what you want of this company. You aren’t so far from your vision now you know. You just need to get refocused on what is really important to you and get reenergized to make this thing what you want. Cliff: It seems so daunting sometimes. I am trying to manage the business aspects of this company with sponsorships, bookings, arenas, merchandise, hiring, firing, production, video distribution, and book all the shows. Me: Maybe you should turn over some of that stuff to someone else so you don’t have to feel pulled in all those directions. Cliff: Yeah I have always preferred to hold on to the book myself since no one really sees this thing the way I do but now we are getting big enough that I can’t even find the time to book it right… And it is my vision… How crazy is that? Me: Well this is your baby and I know how much it means to… He cut me off and began to stand. Cliff: Doc, I gotta run… Thanks for the chat. I got some thinking to do tonight about how to get this thing headed back in the direction I want. I always appreciate your company after the shows. As a fan of the Coastal Zone I couldn’t agree with Cliff more – the company had gotten away from its foundation the last couple of years and they could sure use a kick in the pants to refocus on selling the fast paced, hard hitting, action in the ring that I had fallen in love with. I didn’t start following the Zone to see Jimmy Prudence cut a promo and let’s face it even though he is better than most of our guys at doing that he ain’t exactly great at it. The Zone I had enjoyed before working here was all about taking guys talent that was underappreciated throughout the rest of the American wrestling scene and giving them a forum to excel by letting them show their stuff in the ring. There was no contrived storylines and angles to explain why guys were fighting. The fighting spoke for itself! I sure hope that Cliff can get this thing figured out because I for one would really like to see less of the angles and more of the action!

January 1st, 2008 I had just finished up my afternoon seeing patients and my receptionist handed me a note to call Cliff. Pretty typical to hear from Cliff when someone was injured but everyone made it out of the show last night relatively healthy… Cliff: Hey Doc how’s if going? Me: Things are good Cliff I had a note here to call you. Somebody get hurt at the gym today that you need me to see tonight? Cliff: Nah, I just wanted to call you to follow up on our conversation last night. I was up pretty late last night trying to decide what my next move should be to get this organization back on track. I just can’t seem to think of anyone that I can trust to turn the business operations over to so I have made a decision to give up the booking duties. What do you think about that? Me: I know how difficult that must be for you to decide to give up that job to someone else. Cliff: Well to be honest once I figured out who I wanted to be the head booker it wasn’t that difficult at all. Me: Who did you hire? Cliff: Well I haven’t offered the position to him yet so I still got some hurdles to jump. Me: So what are you wasting your time talking to me? Seems you need to be on the phone with your future head booker right? I was puzzled… Was he wanting to get my opinion about who the hire? Cliff: I am on the phone with my future head booker Doc… {Silence} Holy sh*t is he serious? Me head booker of CZCW? I am a pretty good physician but a head booker I am not… I have always been a big fan and I have gotten a little taste of the backstage scene from being the company doctor but… Me: Okay quit pulling my leg Cliff… You and I both know I am not ready to be a head booker for CZCW… Cliff: I am not pulling your leg man. I really want to hire you to be my head booker. You know what potential this organization has almost better than I do. You share my desire to focus on in-ring product over fancy stuff. You are an intelligent man. The workers respect you and I respect you. No one is a bigger fan of the athletes we have in the Coastal Zone than you are. Together you and me can take the Coastal Zone to the top and give people across America the alternative they have been craving for to Eisen’s goofs. You can help me breath life back into this company! Me: You make a pretty convincing argument Cliff but I have never booked a show before. I will need a lot of guidance and I will want you to give me constant feedback on how things are going. Cliff: Whatever you want man… Just tell me that you will take the job! {Pause} Me: If you think I am your guy I can’t think of anything I would enjoy doing more than booking shows for the Coastal Zone! You got your man Cliff! I just hope I don’t let you down! Cliff: Sit down and come up with some ideas of how to shake things up and I will do the same. We can meet in a couple of days and discuss our plans for the future okay… Me: Sounds good man… Thanks for the call!

January 4th, 2008 My mind had been busy at work since our phone call the other day and now it was time for us to sit down and talk about how we were going to get the Coastal Zone to become what Cliff really wanted it to be… During our meeting we discussed his vision and I had a chance to tell him some of the things I thought we should do with the company. Together we decided that we should alter our “product” to reflect his original vision even if it meant we lost a few of our current fans. We both thought that pushing the in-ring product over our wrestler’s popularity and microphone skills would be a good idea. We also wanted to slowly open up our promotion to more technical wrestlers in addition to the many high-flyers we already had. We also thought that we should expand our schedule to bi-monthly shows rather than the monthly shows we had been used to. We discussed going with weekly shows but felt that the financial burden may be too much if we did that. Of course we would like to get on TV at some point so we have a plan to go back to a monthly big show schedule if that opportunity ever presents itself. At first we will start by having a 1.5 hour show monthly that will recur each month called “CZCW Monthly Mayhem”. We also talked about a list of new blood we would like to bring in to bolster the roster as well as potential roster cuts. He seemed to like my ideas about additions so I was pleased with that. Cliff mentioned that from a business standpoint we really needed to grow our popularity in another region as a spring board to go national. I thought it sounded like a good idea and to accomplish that goal we are going to run shows regularly in the Mid South region due to it being a prominent player in wrestling history. After that Cliff gave me a list of goals that he wanted me to achieve: - We could never go in debt at anytime - Anyone I hired or resigned needed to be decently tough - Anyone I hired or resigned can’t have trouble with the law - Anyone I hired or resigned had to have decent psychology in there skill set All things considered Cliff and I work pretty well together. We both seemed to share a lot of the same thoughts about how to make the company better. I just hope that the fans see it the same way.

[OOC] Any feedback on how this is going so far? I have always wanted to do a Coastal Zone diary. I have played with them pretty exclusively over the last couple of years so I am pretty excited. I hope to have more shows up soon...

Backstage Notes: Well things are starting to take shape. I have made a couple of key signing some of which are yet to debut. One signing is huge and he will likely debut at the next show. Don’t know how long we can hold on to this one though because he is sure to move on to bigger promotions pretty fast I would think! But we will sure enjoy him while he is here! With regards to the releases and other that have moved on… The managers really were not necessary with out refocusing on competition. I am not ruling out using managers or promos in the future but the people that do those things will have to be pretty good at them. Lets face it Jakki and Sunshine just weren’t that good at what they did. As for James Prudence – we were pleased that he was able to find another gig. He was not going to be one of our front men for very long anyway. That being said it left a sour taste in our mouth that he would not stick around long enough to give the rub to someone else on his way out by passing the title on the right way. But that is water under the bridge and we were excited with the beginning of the 6 man tournament. I think that the upcoming triple threat match will be a treat. Well so far so good. Can’t wait to keep things going here in the Coastal Zone!

Insane Machine vs. Snap Dragon I'm sorry, but numerous games where neither has delivered for me, I frankly don't care. Yes, I have Insane Machine on my CZCW roster, having rehired him in 2013, but I still don't like him and think he should just stay in WLW. As for Snap, don't hate him as much, but he never delivers like I'd expect. Plague vs. Mikey James I love both these guys, and both always deliver. But I'm going to go for Plague because he's a CZCW mainstay, and has always got a lot of love in the Cornelverse. Just cross you're fingers that it takes TCW time to go Global, cause these two get snapped up for the All Action Division. California Screamin vs. Fox Mask and Mystery Partner Frankie Perez is awesome, Remmy Skye is useful in any federation, but I want to believe you've found the perfect partner for Fox Mask, and there fore you're going to build a great tag team. Because otherwise, in my mind Fox Mask is surplus to requirements. Donnie J vs. Ultimate Phoenix vs. Steve Flash If you want you're main events to always be good matches, then Steve Flash is the man. He can take up you're title prestige before giving it to a built up star. Donnie J needs more stamina unless you've shortened the match lengths that CZCW use.

His dedication and perseverance should be reward with singles gold preferably another rung with the Coastal Zone Championship.

Insane Machine vs. Snap Dragon I disagree with Homicidal J-Snap delivers for sure, you know this, I know you are also disapointed with Insane Machine. I can smell the title changing. Plague vs. Mikey James Both are talented, but clearly Plague should get the win here for a good push against maybe Snap Dragon? Unless you are gonna give Mikey a good initial push (ala Davey Richards over Jimmy Rave) I don't see him getting a win here. California Screamin vs. Fox Mask and Mystery Partner I have no clue who the partner is. Maybe Amo Del Gato, he fits the style, animal theme, and is available. I don't like Frankie with Remmy, I feel he would make a kick ass team with Mikey James, helping Mikey turn into a star. Just get the belts off California Screamin. Donnie J vs. Ultimate Phoenix vs. Steve Flash I want to see Phoenix win, but chances are unlikely. I feel that Steve is gonna continue rocking the company. Donnie J has no right to be in this match. He is a midcarder at best in my mind.

Thanks for the picks guys... I am glad to know that at least someone if paying attention to this... I know both of you are really familiar with CZCW so I think for the most part your ideas are pretty close to mine. We differ a little but you will have to wait and see how that plays out... As for the tag division and titles... That is usually the hardest part of my CZCW games... How about you guys? I tend to have trouble finding guys that match up well as tag teams and creating enough teams that work to have a solid division without taking away too much from my singles ranks... What do you think of the Hell Monkey signing? I was stoked when he signed with me... Usually he ends up with 3 bigger promotions or on tour to fast for me to sign him... He also signed with BHOTWG but luckily only to a PPA deal... It will be interesting to see if he stays long or if someone bigger pick him up to a PPA deal and he drops me... That being said I think I am off to a solid start... Now I just need to build up a bank of shows so I can start cranking this thing out faster... What do you think of my format? Should I loose the pics? They seem to take alot of time? Do you want more backstage information?
Guys I spent alot of time coming up with that great tag team name "California Screamin" and no one likes these two together... I am saddened! Though I do like the idea of Perez and James... I was thinking of giving Mikey James a new gimmick - I'm Mikey James - B*tch!!!!

We wish her the best. We would like to welcome Hell Monkey, Jacob Jett, and the UK Dragon to the Coastal Zone! We are fortunate to have such talented guys want to be a part of our organization! Also so far we have had a harmonious begin to the new era in CZCW – no one has had any incidents that we have been made aware of backstage. Everyone really seems to be on board and energized by our new focus!

The tag team division for CZCW is weak to start but you have a lot to work with. First off I never take guys who are top singles wrestlers (Pere, Skye, Monkey and Fox are all in the group) and make them tag team workers. They have so much more to offer you in the Championship and the Xtreme title pictures. Usually I retire the tag titles for about a year as I search for good teams in my Midcard and below workers in the dark matches and throw together matches on the actual show. In one game I had Jeremiah Moose and Marc Speed have good chemistry and Daredevil Aero and Fearless Blue also. It just takes some playing with but for the love of all that is holy get your good singles workers out of your tag division.

While I would love to be raking in the money I think we are doing well not to be losing money so far. He reminded me of his goal not to go into debt. Now we are $502,000 away from that.

Frankie Perez vs. Steve Flash I never pick against Steve Flash Ultimate Phoenix and Hell Monkey vs. The Lords of Wrestling (Plague and Snap Dragon) Again with more great singles competitors in official tag teams. CZCW Xtreme Title Match Insane Machine vs. Masked Cougar I like Cougar and he is a fan favorite here on the baords but he's just not as good or as popular as Insane Machine

The Mayhem shows each month are not my A+ shows... Not really a B show either but more of a A- show most months... So you can expect to see some big guys tagging to give the undercard more time during the show... I know you don't like these guys tagging but I wanted to explain it a little... Hope you enjoy!
