Brett Favre...ugh!

Rather than bump the "Who doesn't deserve to be in football" thread, I figured why not get a fresh discussion on this.

What is the deal with this dude? When is enough enough, really? I don't care that he wants to play, if a team is dumb enough to fall for it, that's their problem. But he's the little boy who cried retirement.

"I'm tired. I'm beat. I'm mentally & emotionally exhausted."

Fast forward 3 months later, and he changes his mind. And the four letter network will probably be on Brett Favre Watch 24/7. Will he? Won't he? More like WHO CARES!?!?! It's been something like 4 seasons already of this indecision. I get you still want to play football, and that you dislike the off season conditioning. Great. But how about you either stick to one decision, or you DON'T say anything regarding your future until you are ready to stick to the decision.

Part of me wants him to come back, just so that he can throw an interception at the end of the year, dashing Minnesota's hopes, and watch him walk off the field dejected, further tarnishing his legacy. And I'm not one to hope bad things on people, but he's such a phony. Why come back if not for the single purpose of sticking it to the Packers just because they deemed you expendable? It's kind of sad that he lacks an identity beyond football, but whatever.

A good way to not get Brett Burnout is not watch/read a lot of the mainstream sports media stuff. I'm a major sports fan, but sometimes reading ESPN.com while flipping between ESPN and NFL network just gives me a headache. Read some sports satire blogs (Deadspin and Sportspickle are good for this) to make you realize how ridiculous the sports media is with things like Brett Favre stories. It gives you a better sense of humor about sports and you aren't disgusted everytime you see a story about Trent Dilfer and Brett Favre texting each other.

Just on Favre though, I don't mind him coming back...as long as it's not to my Cowboys <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> . It would be fun to see him as a Viking going against Green Bay twice next year, it's not nearly the story it's made out to be, but I would want to see it.

He needs to quit, its sad. His confidence in his abilities is high, but he doesn't have it anymore. Brett was always doing something he shouldn't probably do but got away with it, but it's catching up with him.

He did become a verb for us at work.

"Guys, I'm not sure what route these parts should go on, I think I'll just Brett Favre it and see what happens."

When it comes to Favre's legacy, Vince McMahon said it before and I'll say it again, "Brett screwed Brett."

Hang it up.

Rumor going around the net is that vikings (my vikings) are going to be offering him a deal real soon.<img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/eek.png.0e09df00fa222c85760b9bc1700b5405.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Slack, I laughed harder than I should at your comment. I guess the other part that makes me cringe about this is how he goes about it (not the lying and changing his mind part) but the texting and childish antics. I do find laughable that ESPN is covering it like a major story, but they have NO clue how to cover it. They are just reporting everything and hope they get it right at some point.

I remember last year, they had all this manpower working on the story, and I think it was Jay Glazer from Fox Sports that broke the story (as to whether he was coming back/where he was going). ESPN's reaction? Not to be outdone, they had a little blurb on the BottomLine saying something like "ESPN's Michael Smith confirms reports that Brett Favre will be playing for the Jets next season." It was hilarious.

Lastly, one of the morning hosts down here has made a conscious effort NOT to talk about the Brett Favre non-issue.

It's his decision, and only his decision, on when he retires for good. If he wants to continue to play (even at a lesser level) then he should be able to do so. ya know? Just because we are fans of the sport doesn't mean we can tell someone to quit their job if they aren't ready to finish themselves.

While he may not be the QB that he use to be... Minnesota is a perfect fit for him. They are a running team so right there Favre isn't going to have to win games. Their Defense can shut people down and really could deliver as a Super Bowl kind of D if they play up to their potential.... And on top of that, You can give Tavaris Jackson some more time on the bench as he prepares for potentially being the future QB of the Vikings (same with Sage). To me, this is a win-win scenario for Favre and the Vikings.

I don't see Sage or TJ as anything but bench guys. OK, so Sage is infinitely better than TJ, but still. I have no problem with Favre, aside from being a phony, but I dislike how he is treated so reverentially by nearly everyone in the media.

And Eisen, I understand what you are saying, but he should have NOT retired last year. He should have just said "I'll take the off season off, and I really don't like the off season workouts, so I'll make my decision in May/June." At least be honest about your intentions. And with everything lined up for Minnesota to succeed with Favre, it will only increase the glee I will get from seeing Favre's face when he throws an interception that ends the Vikings' season. Maybe he'll talk to reporters this time. Fat chance.

And he's done it so often the meaning is gone. I remember being really sad when he gave that post-game interview after the Packers lost in the playoffs where he didn't know if he could play another year.

A year later, I was annoyed when he retired and unretired, demanding to be cut so he could go play for somebody else, and blaming management for not wanting to wait any longer to pull the trigger on Aaron Rogers to give him ANOTHER farewell tour.

Then he signs with the Jets, misses most of camp, plays pretty well, and the New York media thinks I'm really interested. He gets hurt and nobody apparently has the stomach to just bench him when he plays poorly, so the Jets miss the playoffs.

Now he's retired again, and AGAIN says his heart's not in it and he wants to keep playing. The guy is 39 years old, recovering from a bicep tear that he hasn't been rehabbing, had foot surgery two years ago, not to mention the car crash in college and the degenerative hip problem that probably mean he'll struggle to walk in ten years, and the Vikings think this could be the guy? He doesn't watch tape, he doesn't go through camps, he doesn't have any interest in being "one of the guys." He just wants something to do on Sundays. It's self-serving and I'm sick of it.
