TCW: A Quiet Retirement

Recommended Posts

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/totalwrestlingbanner.jpg

After an absolutely stunning first outing for Fight to the Feedback, the TCW roster is adjusting to the changes. One of the title belts is already going back into defence as other grudges are slowly coming to the fore.

For the first time in his TCW career, Edd Stone has requested a particular match. He's set his sights on Rising Star Joey Minnesota, it seems. It's rare to see Edd pick a particular target and reallly focus on it - which leads to the obvious question; what's he after?

Interim tag team champions Greg Keith and Art Reed put their belts back on the line against the British Lions this Tuesday, too. It's uncertain whose decision it was to accept the title stipulation, but a loss here could certainly cause friction among the Blonde Bombshell's camp, with Matthew Keith unable to dispute the interim champions' decisions until he returns to active competition.

A tag team match was made after the events of Fight to the Feedback, too; the new Hard-Hitting Champion, Texas Pete, will team with Troy Tornado against former Hard-Hitting Champion Sammy Bach and former Painful Procedure frontman Jack Bruce. It's the haves against the have-nots, and it does seem like a war that began in late 2008 is still under way. Troy Tornado is swiftly learning how hard it is for a TCW competitor to have a quiet life.

American Buffalo is still making a lot of noise about not having received a "credible title shot" in some time. Ricky Dale Johnson invited him to step up against someone else who feels he's been missing out on the top prize - RDJ himself - and see if he's championship caliber. Can Buffalo shock the world?

Champagne Lover is also set to be in action against John Anderson, as the Machines continue to do what they've always done; quietly and without fuss take on top competition and push it to the very limit. Will Rocky Golden get involved? Can Lover notch up a major victory? Or will John Anderson show once again why he takes the name Machine so seriously?

And then there's the main event. Mayhem Midden made an appeal for two men to face two of Generation Omega, to face up to the challenge. The two who've agreed are a very unusual combination - Koshiro Ino and Sam Keith have the courage to stand up to Davis Wayne Newton and Remo Richardson. Can Newton make an impact on a par with his allies?

Champs just where in A* match so pretty unlikely that they would lose the belts here without any build.

Bach gets a win back

American Buffalo w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Ricky Dale Johnson

I don´t even remember when Buffalo had his last win.

Lover is still paying his dues

Davis Wayne Newton & Remo Richardson w/ Phil Vibert vs. Koshiro Ino & Sam Keith w/ Baroness Emily & Blonde Bombshell

Currently DWN is still the weak link here.

Edd Stone vs. Joey Minnesota

- I groove on the Edd Fuu. And while Minnesota is on the up, Edd's just too fun not to pick.

TCW Tag Team Championship

Art Reed & Greg Keith © w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. British Lions w/ Laura Huggins

- The Lions are moving upwards but no way does The Art of Keith drop the titles after a show stealing A* match.

Jack Bruce & Sammy Bach vs. Texas Pete & Troy Tornado

- Bruce and Bach have been allies longer and both are going to be piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissed after the PPV.

American Buffalo w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Ricky Dale Johnson

- I fear for Goldworthy's life if American Buffalo loses.

Champagne Lover vs. John Anderson

- Mr. Lover Lover~

Davis Wayne Newton & Remo Richardson w/ Phil Vibert vs. Koshiro Ino & Sam Keith w/ Baroness Emily & Blonde Bombshell

- Ohs noes! When two divas can't get along, a face team divide!

Edd Stone vs. Joey Minnesota

Everyone loves some Edd-Fu but he's not exactly been pushed as a main event threat, where as Minnesota is gradually, ever so gradually being pushed there.

TCW Tag Team Championship

Art Reed & Greg Keith © w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. British Lions w/ Laura Huggins

British Lions have done enough to earn a shot at these belts, but after Art Reed really stepped it up to be part of an amazing A* match Keith and the supersub aren't going to be dropping these belts anytime soon.

Jack Bruce & Sammy Bach vs. Texas Pete & Troy Tornado

After winning the International belt Texas Pete is no longer the weak link here, however I still feel that Bach somewhat gets his win back.

American Buffalo w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Ricky Dale Johnson

American Buffalo...TCW's BIGGEST jobber.

Champagne Lover vs. John Anderson

I'm tempted to go with Lover, as Anderson has become somewhat lost in the shuffle with some of the big names that have come into TCW (so perhaps it's an idea to get the Machines focusing on the Tag scene again) but I just don't see Lover (who is doing the looking good whilst losing thing) getting his breakthrough win in a match as relatively meanless as this.

Davis Wayne Newton & Remo Richardson w/ Phil Vibert vs. Koshiro Ino & Sam Keith

I'll go against the grain here, and say that despite DWN being the 'weak link' the Generation Omega duo still find a way to win...

When the pyro dies away, the camera goes to the ring, where Wolf Hawkins is lounging against a turnbuckle, Phil Vibert standing nearby with the Ticket to the Top briefcase in his hands. Wolf has the microphone in hand, though.

“I had a plan, when I won that,” he says, pointing at the briefcase. “I was going to put Tommy out of my misery at Just Another Day, then I'd cash the Ticket in at Total Mayhem. Beat Johnny Bloodstone down on the second-biggest show of the year, become world heavyweight champion.

“You know what they say about plans... Just Another Day became Fight to the Feedback. But lucky me – you all voted for me to face Tommy Cornell. Wanted to see him put me in my place, I guess.

“And we all know he didn't.

“So I guess the plan was set to go on... But it's not.” He shakes his head.

“Five years from now people will look in the record books. Hawkins defeated Cornell, 30 minutes, main event. And five years from now, they'll think, what a classic. The student exceeds the teacher. Half an hour. Man, I've got to see that.

“And when they do, well, they'll see me win... but they won't see me triumph.

“And that's not enough. So I got Phil to... well, you tell it, Phil.”

Vibert takes over. “Wolf wanted more than just the win. I spent all yesterday in a conference call pulling strings, and the end result is that this thing is going to go on until we've decisively proved Tommy Cornell can't cut it any longer.

“But Tommy, let me do you a favour – let me give you an out. At Total Mayhem, we've got you booked in for a tag team match with Wolf Hawkins and Marc DuBois.

“Of course, the champ has said he won't help you. He's not the only one, either.

“This is your out, Tommy. If you can't find a partner, we'll be happy to take the forfeit loss. And Wolf can get back to his plan,” he gestures with the Ticket to the Top briefcase, “on schedule.

“Let me do you a favour, Tommy. Take the out.”

Edd Stone vs. Joey Minnesota

This is no ordinary contest – but then, with Edd Stone involved, it never is. He dazzles the crowd here, looking to throw the straightforward Minnesota off his game.

But that's hard to do; Joey Minnesota is a capable athlete and a near-unflappable one, and even the master of Edd-Fu has problems rattling his cage. He continues a systematic assault, interspersed with Edd's usual outbreaks of crazy innovation – and Minnesota often feels much the worse for them; it's hard to predict someone who doesn't know what he's going to do next himself.

Which is what clinches it in the end; Minnesota tries for the Minnesota Salute, but Edd slides through his legs to avoid it, springing up and vaulting over Minnesota as he turns to hit a variant Party's Over that Joey just didn't have time to set for. Off such a vicious impact, the three count is a certainty.

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins

Given Reed & Keith's performance two days earlier, there was surely no doubt that this contest was going to be excellent, a real showcase of technical wrestling in a tag environment.

One of the issues for this kind of competitor with a tag match is that, as submission experts, their primary weapon is somewhat blunted by the fact a tag partner can make the save, and that may well have to do with how long this one goes; Reed and Keith may be the champions, and they may well be excellent, but O'Curle and Morgan back each other to the hilt, and after twenty minutes have gone by, neither team can claim victory.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/MayhemMidden.jpg

“Alright,” Mayhem Midden tells the camera backstage. “We rolling? I want the fans to see this. Question needs dealing with.”

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/Remo.jpg

“Uh... yeah,” a voice on the other side answers. The Board's Representative nods and bangs on the door he's standing by. Remo Richardson opens it.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/CharlieThatcher_nac2.jpg

“I need to talk to your buddy Frankie,” Midden says. Remo doesn't move. Midden sighs. “Get out of my face or I'll have yours caved in,” he says, tipping his head back slightly to indicate his company – Charlie Thatcher with a baseball bat slung over each shoulder.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/DavisWayneNewton.jpg

Remo smirks, but does, slowly, move aside. Midden and Thatcher enter the Generation Omega locker room, and Midden points at Newton. “I don't want any trouble out of you either,” he says, and Davis raises both hands. “Hey, I'm cool,” he says. “I'm planning on getting into it for the Hard-Hitting belt. Your business is with Frankie.”

Midden considers this information for a second, then nods. “Good match,” he says. “Go for it.”

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/PhilVibert.jpg

Vibert, to this point, hasn't looked up from the TV. The previous match is on there as Vibert frame-by-frame advances a particular sequence before stopping to make a few notes in his spiral-bound notebook.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/FrankiePerez.jpg

Perez stands up and strides over to Midden. “You gonna take my belt?”

Our belt,” Midden corrects. “And after you broke the damn thing cheating for the god-knows-how-manyth time, I got tempted. But no, I'm not stripping you of the title, Frankie. I don't think our fans rate you much, but they have to respect that you won the belt, they have to respect that you've kept it so far. You're the champion.

“No, I'm just here to tell you what's going down. We're having a new title belt made, Frankie. And you should be glad – it's going to look a lot nicer. We're spending, oh, it'd work out to about what you make, including your win bonuses, in six months.

“Specifically, the last six months. And we're spending it out of your damn pay packet, Frankie.

“You break this one, you even risk it, and I'm going to see what I can do about shredding your contract and getting the money out of you via bailiff. But right now, Frankie, the disciplinary the Board approved when I recommended it to them? Your next six months' money, most likely. Unless you win more, and wrestle more, and risk more – you're wrestling for nothing for as long as you held the belt you just broke.”

Phil Vibert has, finally, looked up. Midden meets his gaze. “That will include your cut, Phil. I hope I don't need to get Frankie fired – I know you've got some kind of leverage on the Board, but I reckon I have more. Do we want a competition?”

Vibert smiles thinly as the show goes to commercial.

Jack Bruce & Sammy Bach vs. Texas Pete & Troy Tornado

There honestly isn't a lot to tell about this match. It's basically a brawl, and the four men pretty much don't really let the match enter legal rules territory at any given point.

By the end, Jack Bruce has Troy down in one corner, while Sammy Bach and Texas Pete brawl on the outside. Bach gets the Adrenaline Shot, dropping Pete briefly, and he goes for a chair, cracking the new champion over the head just as Troy gives up on principles and boots his assailant in the balls.

Eugene Williams does the only sensible thing, calling for a double DQ.

The camera goes backstage again, and it finds the Three Amigos, Rick Law, Chris Rockwell and Rocky Golden, gathered together in one of the corridors, near the buffet table. “...only right choice,” Law is saying. “You gotta get this stuff settled, Chris. You gotta get your temper under control again – and you gotta make sure that they're not going to be able to tease it back outta you. You beat him, we can be pretty sure they won't.”

“Yeah,” Rockwell says slowly as Golden nods. “But... Marc DuBois?”

“I'm not saying don't lead up to it,” Law says. “But he's king of headgames round here. If he can't coax it out of you, we know you're good.”

“I don't know, man...”

“Chris, you can take him,” Golden says, then perks up and stands. “Scuse me a minute, guys...”

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/StephanieWade.jpg

The camera moves back to show Stephanie Wade strutting down the corridor, dressed for the clubs, kitbag slung over her shoulder.

“Hey, beautiful,” Golden begins, and Wade rolls her eyes. “Not right now, big guy.”

“No? I figured-”

“Look,” she sighs. “You're fun, Rock. Real good fun. But fun is a one-night thing... and you ain't serious.”

She pushes past him and walks off beyond the camera. Rockwell tries not to smirk; Law's face shows genuine sympathy.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/EddStone_alt6.jpg

“Hey! Rocky!” The voice is more than a little unexpected; Edd Stone dashes up the corridor, also dressed to hit the road after competing. “Dude, I gotta thank you,” he says. “You gave me an idea, man, a great idea, a real breakthrough. What you're doing is genius – when I do it, it's gonna get me the International Championship!”

He claps Golden on the shoulder and dashes off. Golden whirls around to face his friends.

“Did I miss something?”

American Buffalo w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Ricky Dale Johnson

Poor old Buffalo. He tries – he really does try – and the speed of his attack at the bell has RDJ on the back foot near the beginning of this match, but RDJ weathers the storm and begins to battle back, and after a few moments the tide is with him. He makes swift work of Buffalo as Azaria notes that both Frankie Perez and Sayeed Ali have given Johnson tougher tests in the recent past.

Champagne Lover vs. John Anderson

Everyone wants that Man of the Hour bottle of bubbly, it seems. But these two being capable of it shouldn't be a surprise; Anderson – both Machines, really – have been on the shortlist of Underappreciated TCW Talent for the past two years – and Champagne Lover is probably the fastest-rising of the new TCW stars, helped by his undoubted talent in everything.

Lover presses Anderson from the off, catching him with a thumb to the eyes just before the bell rings to grab the advantage and then pressing it home like crazy.

After a couple of minutes, however, Anderson gets his feet under him properly – and from that moment on, it's a much more even match, with the crowd on their feet throughout the last five minutes.

Anderson finally nails the Ammo Dump on Champagne Lover, securing a pinfall – and the Man of the Hour for both men.

Johnny Bloodstone walks down to the ring, the World Heavyweight Championship around his waist, the Blonde Bombshell on his arm. He collects a microphone and takes a moment to allow fan reaction to die down and compose his thoughts.

“This month,” he begins, “is Total Mayhem. I became the undisputed champion at the biggest show this company has, against Troy Tornado – who earned his spot in the main event if anyone did – and I find myself at the second biggest we have, looking around for an opponent.

“I'd have welcomed Wolf's championship challenge, truly. But... Let's talk about what's going on.

“I want to start off by calling someone on the bull they've been spouting. Jeremy Stone, you claimed you'd have had no trouble in the Scramble on Sunday. All I can say is, you ain't wrestled Remo Richardson or you'd know how wrong that is.

“You've made no secret you wanna take me on. No secret you wanna beat me. But you're forgetting something, Jezza...

“I beat you. I beat you when I still didn't have my **** together. And I am happy to put the title on the line now I've got everything under control,” the camera dwells for a moment on the Bombshell, “and beat you again for all the world to see, just to prove it.

“No secret I wanna prove myself, either. But the thing is, talking bull and trying to wind me up – that doesn't get you a World Heavyweight Championship match. Not at Total Mayhem.

“There's plenty of people who deserve it. Remo, I probably owe a rematch. Eric Tyler lost this Sunday, but anyone who claims he hasn't been one of the best the company has the last few months needs a new set of glasses.

“Hell, the man you couldn't make quit... I want to wrestle Sean Deeley. He was good when he got here, and I fought him then... but he's getting better. He's found himself. And if he's healed up in time, I'd love to give him a shot.

“I don't know who I'm going to fight yet, Jezza. I just know it won't be you. Not unless you get over yourself.”

Koshiro Ino & Sam Keith w/ Baroness Emily & Blonde Bombshell

It's another great match from four great performers, of course, and the two junior members of their teams both step up to try and prove they belong in the main event.

It's believable, too; even when they're just facing off with each other, it works well, and the crowd stay entertained, stay captivated.

It's a tough one to really call, though; after about eighteen minutes, Ino and Remo are both in the ring. Both men are tough, both are decidedly heavy hitters, and the exchange is brutal. Remo has the power advantage, and eventually powers Ino into a corner. He starts to pummel him, turns on that instinct all great wrestlers have and catches a charging Keith with a clothesline and pumps his fist in the air, caught in the adrenaline...

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/EddiePeak.jpg

His other fist is too near the ropes, however. No one saw him get there, but Eddie Peak is at ringside. He snags Remo's wrist and yanks on it savagely, tugging the Generation Omega man between the ropes – where he receives a punch from a chain-wrapped fist. The Bloody-Handed God watches Remo crash back to the mat, a satisfied smile on his face, as Sam Sparrow calls for the disqualification.

Now we know why TCW has money problems in TEW2010, all the champagne that Cornell had to shell out for these A* matches. Damn you Rick Law! Damn you to... the Supreme extent of my ability!

Must just suuuuuuuuuuuck to have everyone and their Art Reed churning out top quality matches, PS.

It's currently kinda ridiculous, yeah. Mind you, Anderson/Lover makes a lot of sense, in hindsight; it's a couple of the others - Bach/Minnesota. where there's less crossover of applicable skills, and as already discussed, the tag match - that seem weird on it.

I can't say I'm complaining, though.

  • As ever, Team KOBRA arrived to salute Brazzle's fighting spirit and victory. Koshiro Ino also received a bokken shot, with Autumn Gleeson referencing his DQ loss on Tuesday night.
  • Frankie Perez and Davis Wayne Newton united to destroy the lucha-influenced tag team of El Leon and Ultimate Phoenix, Newton forcing El Leon to submit in short order. (Rating: C+)
  • Texas Pete joined forces with Rocky Golden as a truly unlikely pairing took on Sayeed Ali and Freddy Huggins. With little suspense and less ability for Pete and Golden to gel as a unit, the only real pop of the match was Champagne Lover's attack on Rocky, but that didn't stop Pete pinning Sayeed Ali quickly. (Rating: C)
  • The Machines once again bring Marc Speed out to show off his submission skills in their 'Speed Trap' segment. This week, the victim was Joel Bryant, who like the others ultimately tapped to the young Speed.
  • Merle O'Curle stepped into the ring with Rick Law for the main event. While the two had issues finding a rhythm, the performances were nonetheless excellent and the Long Arm of the Law brought its usual Hawaii pop when Law scored the victory. (Rating: B)

Saturday Night Showcase enters its second month of broadcasting (yes, already - time flies!) at the Oregon Gardens this week, and what's on tap looks likely to be excellent. In the first of our contests, young high flyer Canadian Elemental squares off with the former Hard-Hitting Champion Sammy Bach, a man who some are tipping to be on the prowl for a World Heavyweight Championship shot in the near future. Can CanEl send a message to the watching fans, or will he have to fight his way out of obscurity and prove his claim to the mask's heritage?

After taking the tag team champions to a time limit draw on Tuesday the British Lions are back in action, this time against Tooth & Claw. They'll be wanting to cement their claim to another title shot as quickly as possible, and a dominant win here could go some way to that... but Tooth & Claw do seem to be improving, becoming a tougher challenge. Can the masked duo go the distance?

Steve Gumble in singles competition? It's a surprise to us, too, but whether or not it signifies anything we couldn't tell you yet. Jeremy Stone made a big point backstage at Badge of Honor of posting an open challenge, and Steve Gumble was the man who signed up to take him on. Could we see a Young Gun rocket up the singles rankings?

And he finally steps into the ring... Newest Machine Marc Speed has made a number of TCW wrestlers submit during the Speed Trap contests the Machines have been hosting, but to date he hasn't wrestled. Having made Joel Bryant tap out yesterday, tonight he takes on Joel's tag team partner, JD Morgan. With the real chance of defeat in his debut on the horizon, how will Speed measure up?

More championship-quality action continues the show, albeit without gold on the line; Greg Keith and Art Reed will be facing off with the Fly Boys. Can Goldworthy's clients jump the queue with a victory here?

A title will be on the line after that, however; Aaron Andrews hopes to make a first successful defence of his International Championship against Champagne Lover. Lover's been in the company only a short time, but has repeatedly impressed - and it's certain he's looking for gold, too. Can he make it here?

Lastly, the main event; Johnny Bloodstone teams with Ricky Dale Johnson against an unlikely alliance, Eric Tyler and Jack Bruce. Asked for comment on the match he'd just made, Representative Midden replied "it should be fun to watch. Those four sons of bitches will want to hurt each other." And, really, what more reason does he need?

Canadian Elemental vs. Sammy Bach

Bach is still more important

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. Tooth & Claw

Lions are rising in the ranks while Tooth & Claw are still jobbers

Jeremy Stone vs. Steve Gumble

This can only end one way.

JD Morgan w/ Laura Huggins vs. Marc Speed

I assume that this one is made purely for Speed to show he´s skills against talented opponent

Art Reed & Greg Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. Fly Boys w/ Floyd Goldworthy (non-title)

Even though it´s non-title I just don´t see Fly Boys taking this one.

Canadian Elemental vs. Sammy Bach

CE may become an important member of the roster sometime in the future but right now Bach is important.

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. Tooth & Claw

I just knew when I saw this match Regis would make some comment about people doing jobs.

Jeremy Stone vs. Steve Gumble

That goes for this match too.

JD Morgan w/ Laura Huggins vs. Marc Speed

More long term potential with Speed, the ageing Morgan is clearly just there to put others over.

Art Reed & Greg Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. Fly Boys w/ Floyd Goldworthy (non-title)

Not just JOBBERS!! But FLYING JOBBERS!!

Double A just win this belt, he isn't going to drop it this early in the run especially in a free TV match with no build.

Could go the other way but I think it's best to keep the champion looking strong.

Canadian Elemental vs. Sammy Bach

- Even a wheel-spinning Bach seems too much further up the card to lose this encounter. Hey, it worked for Pete and Champs.

British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. Tooth & Claw

- Unless PS opts to play All Tag Teams are Equal a draw with the champs after they had an A* defense is not followed up with a loss to Cooth and Tlaw.

Jeremy Stone vs. Steve Gumble

- Enjoy your paycheque Ford.

JD Morgan w/ Laura Huggins vs. Marc Speed

- The Machines continue to try to convince me that the Speedmachine is a worthy addition. I'm not sold.

Art Reed & Greg Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell vs. Fly Boys w/ Floyd Goldworthy (non-title)

- Why would anyone want to be managed by Goldworthy at this point? If he is the Gold Standard for managers... then the world economy must be in a colossal recession.

TCW INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Aaron Andrews © vs. Champagne Lover

- I'm going with a non-ending since, Dubba A won't lose this straight away but CL just had an A* match. Both need to win and neither deserve to lose.

Eric Tyler & Jack Bruce w/ Laura Huggins vs. Johnny Bloodstone & Ricky Dale Johnson w/ Blonde Bombshell

- Because Cornell continues to ruin Bloodstone's reign! Ok, he doesn't but I think Jack needs to pick up the win more than anyone else in this match.

Canadian Elemental vs. Sammy Bach

Sometimes, a guy comes into a promotion and it's not his victories that make him look good, or even a steady stream of exposure as a plucky young warrior fighting his way up the card. Sometimes you get someone like Canadian Elemental who looks brilliant purely due to the sheer range of his aerial assault and just how crisp all of it is.

Here, against Bach, he's clearly the better flyer; faster, more impactful, seeming to innovate in the air...

His problem is that Sammy Bach also has a slick ground game, and over time the thrill seeking Canadian starts to fall prey to it. It does end up taking up more than that, however; he manages to counter the Elemental Driver, then rakes his hand across the mask like a claw, blinding CanEl in the way he moves the eyeholes, and shifts into the Bach on your Back to get the submission.

The camera goes back to the Bombshell's locker room. Art Reed and Greg Keith are warming up, with Matthew looking on from a seat in a wheelchair, one leg elevated. “At least this one's non-title, right?” Greg offers his brother, his cheer somewhat brittle.

“Sure,” Matthew says. “And... I don't really mind that you gave the Lions a shot. I just wish you'd asked. First.” The stress is on that last word.

Art exchanges glances with the Bombshell. “Well, don't sweat it, man,” he says. “I'm just here until you're freed up. How long's that going to be, anyway?”

“Docs aren't willing to let me out the chair yet,” Matthew says somewhat grumpily. “I'm in rehab most days. They're just not sure how far they can push me without it tearing. So I dunno. May be back in a month. May be longer.

“I want to be back, though.”

“Hang in there,” Reed says. “I'll hand the belts right back to you when you're ready.”

For the first time, Matthew smiles. “You bet you will.”

The British Lions w/ Laura Huggins vs. Tooth & Claw

Merle and Walter come down smirking for this contest, and while Fry plays up the determined stoicism of their opponents, it isn't hard to see why.

Tooth & Claw rush the Lions right off the bat, looking somewhat desperate to score some points and notch up some credibility. And it's actually, for a few moments, an effective tactic; Blanco can work a mat game, and his duel with Morgan is pretty slick, while O'Curle is rattled by the assault of American Eagle – until he manages to change the pace, snapping the masked man's head back with an uppercut before taking his legs out from under him, dropping to pummel for a moment and tossing him out of the ring before bailing himself to leave Morgan and Blanco the legal men.

Morgan manages to change the pace back in his favour, when he does, with the unlikely gambit of a dropkick, catching Blanco as the masked Mexican tries to close again. After a little more back-and-forth, Morgan drags Blanco to the mat and locks in a guillotine choke, but it's broken up when American Eagle busts out an astonishing shooting star legdrop from the top, landing across Morgan's throat.

That leaves both men down, but Blanco is hurting almost as much as Morgan. They both start to crawl for their corners and their partners come in at much the same time.

O'Curle sidesteps Eagle's charge and kicks his leg out from under him, going to work on it off the fair assumption that the massive legdrop will have taken its toll. He transitions into a very high single-leg crab which eventually gets the submission.

Jeremy Stone vs. Steve Gumble

Steve Gumble is a determined wrestler; we've always known that, but as he goes up against the Stone submission master, it becomes more and more obvious. Steve Gumble just refuses to stop fighting, refuses to give up, and keeps going, and going...

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/JackBruce_alt8.jpg

And in the end, it's Jack Bruce who changes that, soaring from the top turnbuckle to score with a New York Minute. Jeremy, a grin on his face, takes advantage to lock down the Stone Hold, forcing Gumble to concede the point at last. Fry plays up just how overjoyed Jeremy seems to feel at having someone actually submit.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/EddiePeak.jpg

The camera comes back up after commercial. Eddie Peak stands beaming in the ring, Crashing Around You playing, the ring festooned with weaponry – chairs, ladders, tables, barbed wire on boards, baseball bats, knuckledusters, tyre irons, Peak's slowly-becoming-a-signature chain-wrapped fist, a traditional coiled leather strap...

Peak lifts the chain-wrapped fist, facing the entrance, and we see a microphone within it as the monster grins.

“Remo,” he calls softly. “Reeeeeeeeeemoooo...

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/Remo.jpg

Only God Can Judge Me starts to play, and Remo Richardson emerges. He stands at the top of the ramp, hands on hips, and waits.

Peak, meanwhile, gestures at the center of the ring with his thumb. “Let's play, Remo,” he purrs.

Richardson laughs before grabbing a microphone himself. “Not today, Peak the Freak,” he says. “Sure, I screwed you over Sunday. But that was just putting you on notice. I'm one TCW legend down. When Wolf's finished with his boss, I'll go two down.

“And yeah, you're a DaVE legend, and I'm planning on making that point, too. But that ain't gonna be tonight. It ain't gonna be this month. DaVE doesn't mean as much as my next target, and I'm handling him at Total Mayhem. You can wait.”

He throws down the microphone, and as he begins to turn, Eddie says one word that stops him in his tracks.

“Perrrrfect,” says Peak. Remo turns to face him, and the Bloody-Handed God continues. “You a steak man, Reeeeemooo?”

Richardson looks on, impassive.

“Don't tell me you're a vegetarian,” Peak grins. “It'd be such... a... waste. You're like me, I think. You like the blood. You need your meat, rare and bloody and satisfying, like winning, like hurting...

“You like steak? Or are you a veal man?”

Remo continues to watch, seemingly unfazed.

“I like veal,” Eddie continues. “They trap it, you see, and they leave it... waiting... knowing what's coming... with no way out... for as long as it takes... and all the while, Remo, my little trapped victim, my little veal steak, is getting juicier and juicier. So much more satisfying...

“Take as long as you want, Reeeeeeeeeemoooo. You're just going to be more delicious...”

JD Morgan w/ Laura Huggins vs. Marc Speed

As debuts go, this one is unusual in one very important way.

Speed is dominant, Speed is up against a good, strong talent, and Speed runs him ragged. It takes, in total, a little under eight minutes for the newest Machine to stamp his mark on TCW, beating Morgan all over the ring, executing move after move, before shifting into a Cross Armbreaker and wrenching ever harder until Morgan is forced to submit, like his tag team partner had been the night before.

Art Reed & Greg Keith w/ Blonde Bombshell

Another simple tale in the tag division of an underdog tag team that really do not seem able to keep their heads above water against a stunningly good emergent team. Art and Greg seem absolutely in their element here, and occasionally the camera cuts away to show Matthew Keith sitting backstage and watching, alternately sucked into the match and frustrated.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/AmericanBuffalo.jpg

Donnie J, having offered a good fight, is on the ropes against Greg Keith when Goldworthy hops up on the apron, seizing Sam Sparrow's attention, and the American Buffalo storms down the aisle and into the ring.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/MerleOCurle_alt.jpg

Greg is wiped out by a single running lariat, and the Buffalo turns, measuring him for another shot – and then he's taken down by a chop block from behind; Merle O'Curle has appeared, and he scrambles over the downed giant, locking in a front facelock, dragging him backward out of the ring.

Donnie goes for the Death on Miami Beach, but Art Reed crosses the ring at speed, leaping up to huracanrana the Fly Boy off the top rope, popping up to knock Jimmy P off the apron. As Sparrow's attention returns to the ring, Greg makes the cover on Donnie and picks up the victory.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/RockyGolden_PS2.jpg

As we return from commercial, Rocky Golden stands in the ring, arms folded over the top rope, microphone in hand. “I'm not often one to complain,” he begins. “And I don't think I've got much to complain about right now. I've had a really, really weird week, but it hasn't been a bad one.

“About the worst of it is I got stood up on Tuesday... and the bad bit of that is it was on international TV.” He grins, playing to the crowd as they fondly catcall him.”Yeah, yeah. So I'm just where I was... that's not a bad thing, it's just not a great thing.” A shrug. “Anyway, I'm not here to whine about that. I'm here to talk business.

“So you guys all know I've had this beef with Champagne Lover lately, right? And he's a tough guy, all that, a talented guy who knows what he's doing in the ring.

“He's got a title shot tonight. I can kind of see that. But Aaron – what gives, man?

“You know how many times I've fought him since he got here? You know how often he's beaten me? Never, man. I'm not saying, based on everything else he's done, he doesn't deserve it. He's got some wins, he's got a history, he's sure as hell got some moves.

“But he doesn't deserve it... ahead of me.”

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/AaronAndrews-1.jpg

Devil May Care begins to play, and Aaron Andrews emerges, International Championship securely around his waist, microphone in hand./”Dude,” he begins. “You want to take me on for this?

“Why didn't you ask, man? I'll see if I can square it with Midden. Not leaving anyone around saying I ducked 'em. But Champagne Lover, dude... he asked. That's how he got the match, that's why he's here tonight.”

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm75/trenchcoatbrigand/TCW/StephanieWade.jpg

Somewhat to everyone present's surprise, U + Ur Hand starts to play next, a tune which can only mean one thing – that Stephanie Wade is on her way out to the public area. The camera immediately cuts to a view of Rocky Golden, blinking in surprise.

Wade emerges and takes the microphone from Andrews. “See, the man has it right, big guy,” she says, and her tone is surprisingly sympathetic. “You're not serious enough. You need to remember... you gotta have fun. We're all in this business to have fun. But that don't stop it being a business, **** no. And if you can't be serious when you gotta be, you won't get anywhere...” She grins, suddenly. “And you'll keep getting shot down on international TV.

“I wanna give you a second chance. Like I said, you gotta have fun... and you're fun. But you're gonna have to earn that chance, big guy, however much I like you.”

She drops the microphone and walks off.

Aaron Andrews © vs. Champagne Lover

No one really seems to expect the Lover to walk out with the belt as the match begins, but...

As time goes on, with Champagne Lover hitting as hard and as often as the champion...

As the spinebuster doesn't even get two...

As the Champagne Sunrise sees Aaron just barely kick out...

Over the eighteen minutes that this match lasts, Champagne Lover comes from being an underdog to someone the fans genuinely fear dethroning their young champion. He hits from every direction, flying gracefully, going for everything...

The Lover Stunner, too, only gets two; obviously somewhat frustrated, Lover promptly drives Andrews back into the corner, staying on him with punch after punch; Eugene Williams starts to break it up and Champagne Lover takes the opportunity to deliver a low blow past the ref's back.

He goes for the pin, but Aaron's in the ropes, and after Lover drags him back to his feet, the champion is fired up, whipping his opponent across the ring and catching him with a running boot as he rebounds, blocking another Lover Stunner into an atomic drop, and, eventually, catching him in the Game Breaker to get the pinfall.

Breakin' The Law hits, and Tommy Cornell comes out, microphone in hand, to stare at the International Champion.

“Let's face it,” he starts. “You know what I want to ask you. You and I both know what's coming, Aaron, what we're going to have to deal with if Generation Omega really cut loose, and you know it needs stopping.

“We could do that. Hell, me and Joey could do that. All I need is a partner at Total Mayhem.

“I tried to bring you into the Syndicate, kid. You know how good I think you are. You know I spotted that when almost no one knew who you even were. I pegged you for the top.

“I just need you to stand with me.”

Aaron shakes his head, disbelieving, and accepts a microphone offered by Alanis Springsteen.

“Seriously, man,” he says, “you aren't on the top of your game right now.

“There's no way I'm going to just forget the threats you made. I mean, I get it, you're desperate. Dude, I would be in your place, I guess. But I'm not in your place, and you were planning to end my career – end Joey's career – just to get your own way... and that was this year! That was three months ago!

“Dude, you're in a bad place. That doesn't mean you're suddenly a good person. Prove it, and maybe I'll be happy to help you. But I ain't promising anything.”

Johnny Bloodstone & Ricky Dale Johnson w/ Blonde Bombshell

This contest is, as ever with wrestlers of this caliber, impressive – maybe not as good as the Stone/Gumble match, but it's a very, very good piece of wrestling between four men who deserve to be among the best known in professional wrestling.

Over twenty minutes of intense back-and-forth, it becomes a question of who has the endurance to survive or, more specifically, who doesn't. Tyler and RDJ have age against them, to a greater or a lesser degree, but they've always been resilient S.O.Bs and it shows here. Meanwhile, the champion has proven himself as a master of endurance over the course of his TCW tenure.

That, sadly, leaves Jack Bruce. It's not that he's not a talented, innovative fighter; it's not that he doesn't hit hard; it's that, in the end, Bloodstone's able to get him into the Bloodstone Mutilation, and with RDJ blocking Tyler from an interception, the submission is almost a formality from that moment on.

Hold up here. Hold up.

Did I read that correctly? Jeremy Stone managed to carry... Steve Gumble to an A match?

Truly, this Stone is a god among men.

(And I love how the Greg Keith/Art Reed team has been written into its own storyline... was this always the plan? Or was it the result of discovering the chemistry?

I mean, honestly, I'm in favor of anything that gives Art Reed more screen time, or a role other than "midcard dude whose skills ensure that the guy beating him looks good".)

Hold up here. Hold up.

Did I read that correctly? Jeremy Stone managed to carry... Steve Gumble to an A match?

Truly, this Stone is a god among men.

He sure did. I was surprised myself - figuring on a B or thereabouts.

Bit of all sorts of things. Horatio touches on some of it in his last diary update. I didn't want to completely settle the Keiths/Riders issue, and having Matthew kayfabe-injured was a good way to avoid that; it gives Art something to do where his skills can help more people, and where he can learn more easily from Greg where he's weak; the chemistry sure as hell doesn't hurt, and it also keeps Art free from singles competition during a time when his obvious rivals - like Frankie Perez - have other things to do and would mostly be beating him.

That said, I've no idea which tag team configuration will emerge at the end of all this, or even if one will; it'll probably depend on what's happening at the time.

On top of that, it beats out Lover/Andrews. I know Stone is one of the best... but dagnabbit, that Lover had his A* match earlier.

Aaron Andrews has a midcard belt and that makes a lot of sense to me right now. Look for him to be facing a lot of people with better psych in the next while, plus Edd Stone, while I look at shoring up his weakest stat.

Sunday 7th April 2009

Well, a year and a week into my tenure now, and the company has changed more than a little. Mostly, I hope, for the better, although that isn't all me; quite where we'd be if Joel had had access to two developmental companies back in, say, 2005 I don't know, but I imagine we'd have been pretty successful.

While most of Generation Omega spent no time in our dev system, it's hard to argue we'd still have run with a youth movement program without one – the opposition to Gen-Omega, as faces, has to be a smooth blend between established veterans (for the obvious clash, and to maintain people like RDJ and Sam Keith in the company's top rankings without making them seem tossed aside) and young talent (Aaron, Rick, Joey, the twins, etc.) or we face either trying to sell the fans on sticking exclusively to older talent or to dismiss them.

The dev system is being put to another test this coming month, too – Natural Talent are back up to the main roster from their time in the Coastal Zone. I'm curious to put them up against Painful Procedure's replacement as the primary brawl team, the Easy Riders, and see how they do now in comparison – it should be a useful indicator of how the tag team scene has changed.

Rocky's certainly benefitted from the talent influx – between the aid of his two on-screen buddies in Rick and Chris, and the improved midcard he's feuding with (Champagne Lover being one of the biggest examples), he's featured more often, putting on better matches and getting a decent percentage of signs on the house show circuit.

The angle with Stephanie's kind of a difficult one, for a couple of reasons; it's one of a few places where RDJ's booking and my own have to co-operate, and it's also a place where we're trying a bit more of a sports-entertainment spin on our angles, something to (hopefully) snare a few of the fans we've wooed over from the SWF. Rocky seems to be loving it, though, and certainly the crowds in the arenas are reacting well to the 'everyday guy with a hint of awesome' approach, as he tends to describe his gimmick. (Not sure that's what I'd call it, but he's getting over so it ain't worth arguing. Far from it.)

So much has changed that I do kind of wonder where we're going to be in another twelve months... All I really know is that Tommy wants to make sure Wolf and Aaron are two of the top names. The current plan is that by this stage Davis Wayne Newton will be holding the Ticket to the Top, as promised, but there's a real gap between now and then; it could end up going to anyone. Champagne Lover may well deserve it by then...

The match is said to have been made by Phil Vibert; asked for comment, Mayhem Midden remarked that he was going to have to start picking Frankie's opponents himself to prevent the fine being seen as too mild.<p> </p><p> American Buffalo continues his quest for a title shot, going up against Texas Pete in non-title action. The plan is obvious; squeak his way into the front line with a win. There's going to be a lot of pride on the line here, but also a lot of hatred.</p><p> </p><p> Eddie Peak becomes the latest in a long line to team with the champion this week; Johnny Bloodstone will need the help of the Bloody-Handed God, too, as his opponents have both been tipped as potential candidates to take the World Heavyweight Championship from him.
