American Puroresu: Could It Catch On?

Recommended Posts

In the past, Puroresu based companies in the United States have never done quite well. World-1 attempted this and it was a disaster. New Japan Pro Wrestling opened a dojo in southern California and ran a couple of shows as well, the dojo was successful but the shows quickly stopped soon after opening.

Ring of Honor has shown American audiences some of the top talent Japan has to offer from Pro Wrestling NOAH, All Japan Pro Wrestling, and DragonGate, all with very welcome receptions. More recently, DragonGate opened a sister promotion to be based in the United States known as DragonGate USA, and seems to have taken American indy wrestling by storm.

With this new found appreciation for Puroresu in America, could we be embarking on a new trend? Is there room for another Japanese inspired company on the American indy scene? Change has always been very hit or miss in the wrestling industry. A new idea can either turn out to be a disaster, or it could catch on and change the way things are done, and open up a new horizon of ideas for wrestlers, companies, and fans alike?

Is America ready? Only time will tell.

This is American Puroresu.

Don't know everybody all that well..I'll just make them based on reputations..

B-Boy vs. Drake Younger

Younger's pretty talented in the RL mods I've seen.

Kenny Omega vs. Erick Stevens

Haven't heard of Omega, so I assume Stevens is the more over of the two.

Steve Corino vs. Scorpio

I like Scorpio, but he's geting up there, and I like Corino just a touch more. I'd have saved this for a later round, though, I must say. I pick Corino.

Dan Maff vs. BJ Whitmer

Again, just picking the one I've heard of.

Chuck Taylor vs. Ricochet

Seen good things from him before.

Winner of B-Boy/Drake vs. Winner of Whitmer/Maff

Biggest name of the four, methinks.

Winner of Omega/Stevens vs. Winner of Corino/Scorpio

If he does beat Scorpio, I predict Corino to go all the way in this one.

Team DDT vs. Naptown Dragons

One of the Dragons will have already worked a match (two by my predictions) so that will make him something of a weak link. That's the only reason I predict them to lose.

Tournament Finals

Steve Corino vs. BJ Whitmer

B-Boy vs. Drake Younger

The match was a good opener to start the show, both men showed their mat wrestling technique, but quickly started throwing hard strikes going back and forth. B-Boy slowed the match down to a slow pace with Younger fighting back much of the time. After mounting a big comeback Younger was able to score a quick rollup and get the win, advancing him into the second round.

O Drake Younger (9:54 ~ School Boy) B-Boy X

Match Rating: D+

Match 2: Championship Tournament First Round

Kenny Omega vs. Erick Stevens

Erick Stevens, clearly the powerhouse of the match, went straight for Omega at the start of the match, with Omega turning it into a cat and mouse game trying to avoid Stevens for much of the match. Kenny Omega's quirky, often comedic style threw off Erick Stevens' game and Omega was able to stay in control for part of the match, but Stevens' was able to outmuscle Kenny Omega toward the end, hitting several power moves and finally his signiture gutwrench powerbomb to get the win.

O Erick Stevens (11:17 ~ Gutwrench Powerbomb) Kenny Omega X

Match Rating: D-

Match 3: Championship Tournament First Round

Dan Maff vs. BJ Whitmer

Maff and Whitmer from bell to bell tried to outpower one another, with the two exchanging chops, forearms, and whatever they could throw at each other. A good hard hitting contest with Whitmer toward the end outlasting numorous head drops, finally going under to a huge lariat by Maff.

O Dan Maff (11:17 ~ Lariat) BJ Whitmer X

Match Rating: D+

Match 4: Championship Tournament First Round

Steve Corino vs. Scorpio

Scorpio gained control of the match early and kept the momentum at a swift pace, causing Corino to exit the ring to regain his composure several times. Finally, a frustrated Corino resulted to dirty tactics to gain the advantage throughout the match. Scorpio managed to mount a big comback and seemed to have the match won, wound up as the victim of a suprise roll up by Corino with a handful of tights, giving Corino the cheap win.

O Steve Corino (10:44 ~ Rollup w/ Tights) Scorpio X

Match Rating: D+

Match 5

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/ChuckTaylor.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/Ricochet.jpg

Chuck Taylor vs. Ricochet

These two had an extremely fast paced match, with Ricochet hitting an outstanding outside dive early on in the match. Chuck Taylor was very comedic during his offense focusing moreso on the crowd than Ricochet, which allowed him to make a few small comebacks, but was quickly stopped. After a big fire up, Ricochet called for a double moonsault, but took too much time and was tripped up by Taylor. The two battled on the top rope for some time and once again it seemed Ricochet would be able to hit his finisher, but in comedic fashion Chuck Taylor was able to trip him off the top rope again the same way. Taylor pulled Ricochet off the top rope carrying him on his shoulder to the middle of the ring, and was able to hit the Awful Waffle, dropping Ricochet flat on top of his head, giving Taylor the win.

O Chuck Taylor (11:38 ~ Awful Waffle) Ricochet X

Match Rating: D

Match 6: Championship Tournament Semifinals

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/DanMaff.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/drakeyounger.jpg

Dan Maff vs. Drake Younger

Both men were already tired and beaten from their extremely hard hitting and physically grueling matches in the rounds before. Maff stayed in control for most of the match until Drake was able to finally put Maff down after a desperate flury of offensive strikes. After both men were nearly unable to answer the 10 count to get back up, the two began exchanging thunderous chops, followed by feirce echoing slaps, then finally forearms until Younger was able to make a comeback. After capitalizing on a mistake, Dan Maff was able to hook Younger for a burning hammer near the corner, but Younger was able to fight off Maff and climb onto the top rope. Maff climbed after him to hit something off the top out of desperation, but Younger was able to knock him off and hit a frog splash to get the win. After the match, Drake Younger got on the mic and put over Dan Maff as one of the hardest hitting people he's ever been in the ring with.

O Drake Younger (11:37 ~ Frog Splash) Dan Maff X

Match Rating: D

Match 7: Championship Tournament Semifinals

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/SteveCorino.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/ErickStevens.jpg

Steve Corino vs. Erick Stevens

Steve Corino wrestled this match in a similar way he wrestled Scorpio in the round before and went straight for the cheap shots early, giving Erick Stevens almost no time to catch his breat whatsoever. After a while, Corino began to get overconfident and that allowed Stevens to make a furious comeback nailing Corino with every power move he could throw at him. Stevens, overcome with adrenaline, began pounding on Corino in the corner until the referee tried pulling him off Corino. Stevens threw the referee out of the way, allowing Corino to reach into his trunks and pull out a fistpack, nailing Stevens when he turned around, giving Corino yet another cheap win.

O Steve Corino (12:22 ~ Foreign Object Shot) Erick Stevens X

Match Rating: D-

Match 8

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/KotaIbushi.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/KUDO.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/ScottyVortekz.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/xOMGx.jpg

Team DDT vs. Naptown Dragons

Kota Ibushi & KUDO vs. Scotty Vortekz & xOMGx

This match was a constant back and forth spotfest with both teams hitting some high impact moves throughout. At one point there was a standoff between the two teams in the middle of the ring where the two simultaneously exchanged standing kicks to the chest. Finally the match broke down and the referee lost all control with bodies seemingly flying in every direction. Finally Kota Ibushi was able to hit a phoenix splash on xOMGx to earn Team DDT the win.

O Kota Ibushi (12:54 ~ Phoenix Splash) xOMGx X

Match Rating: E

Match 9: Championship Tournament Finals

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/SteveCorino.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b353/xXxTheSiKnessxXx/tew/drakeyounger.jpg

Steve Corino vs. Drake Younger

Both men were exhausted by this point in the match, with Corino going for cheap pins almost immediately. After several near falls by both men, they began hitting every move they had on one another, each one closer to a 3 count than the last. Younger had Corino hooked for a death valley driver, however Corino's feet knocked the referee down. Corino pulled out the fist pack again to nail Younger, but Younger ducked and hooked Corino in the Drake's Landing! Corino was able to roll out and nail Younger with a low blow, allowing him to hit the Old School Expulsion right as the referee came to. After a slow count, Steve Corino got the 3 count and was awarded the American Puroresu Heavyweight Championship.

O Steve Corino (9:52 ~ Low Blow-Old School Expulsion) Drake Younger X

News for November: Week 2

American Puroresu officials have announced that after seeing the footage from The Debut Show, they were disgusted at the manor in which Corino got through the tournament and winning the Heavyweight Championship. Officials say that actions like these cheapen what American Puroresu is all about, and that they are not only unbecoming of a champion, but is the opposite of what a true champion should be. They have decided that it would be unfair to the fans in attendance at the show to simply strip Corino of the title, so they are giving him an honorable chance at defending it and awarding a second chance to those he cheated the opportunity from along the way. They have made the announcement that at American Puroresu's next event "Vengeance Come Full Circle", Steve Corino will be forced to defend the American Puroresu Heavyweight Title in a four way elimination match against Erick Stevens, Scorpio, and Drake Younger.

In addition to that, "The Generic Luchadore" El Generico will make his American Puroresu debut against current DDT KO-D Openweight Champion Kota Ibushi.

Future shows will be announced soon as well, one of which will be another tournament this time to crown the first ever American Puroresu Tag Team Champions. The event will be titled "Dynamic Duos", and talks are currently in progress with a number of talent from Japan to be brought in for this event.
