From The Beginning (Dawn of MMA)

Recommended Posts

Started in 1993, the Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) brand is a professional mixed martial arts organization offering the premier series of MMA sports events.

The UFC organization follows a rich history and tradition of competitive MMA dating back to the Olympic Games in Athens. About 80 years ago, a Brazilian form of MMA known as Vale Tudo (anything goes) sparked local interest in the sport.

Then, the UFC organization brought MMA to the United States. The goal is to find “the Ultimate Fighting Champion” with a concept to have matches between the best athletes skilled in the various disciplines of all martial arts, including karate, jiu-jitsu, boxing, kickboxing, grappling, wrestling, sumo and other combat sports.

UFC 1: Live! Sold Out! Review

Now that the first show of is over, we can do our first ever review of an event! The show had a Middleweight bout for the Middleweight title and the fighters in this main event were Masakatsu Funaki and Royce Gracie. The show had 89 people in the crowd but now they are a lot more popular so the size of the attendance should grow! But here is a recap of the night:

Orlando Weit vs. Ray Wzard

This match was fantastic and Ray Wizard showed some great striking and he showed his submission skills as he took the victory via Submission(Armbar) in 2:21 of Round 1

Fred Ettish vs. Jose Landi-Jons

Great match between these two. Landi-Jons dominated most of the match and then he hit a big right hand which he followed with a barrage of the punches so the ref stopped the fight and Landi-Jons took a victory via TKO in 6:39 of Round 1.

Zane Frasier vs. Ken Shamrock

These two had a good match. Shamrock showed why he is "The World's Most Dangerous Man" as he took a TKO victory after taking Frasier to the mat almost immidiately. Shamrock took it via TKO in 4:21 of Round 1.

Co-Main Event: Murilo Bustamante vs. Trent Jenkins

Even tought this was the worst match of the night, it was still OK! The match was very equal until Bustamante's takedown succed and he got directly to side control where he finished the match with an Americana. Bustamante via Submission(Americana) in 4:30 of Round 1.

Main Event for the UFC Middleweight Title: Masakatsu Funaki vs. Royce Gracie

Gracie took Funaki down immidiately in this Good match. He slowly build his way to get to the mount where he used some GnP to make Funaki defend himself and then Gracie locked the Armbar. Gracie is the NEW and the FIRST EVER UFC Middleweight Champion!!! Gracie via Submission(Armbar) in 9:51 of Round 1.

UFC SIGNING EVEN MORE PEOPLE

UFC has signed 4 new fighters and they have re-signed atleast two of their fighters. The re-signers are Ken Shamrock (1-0) and Murilo Bustamante (0-1). All the fighters from UFC 1 will probably be re-signed. Here is a list of the 4 new fighters:

Johnny Rhodes (Karate)

Minoki Ichihara (Karate)

Scott Baker (Freestyle)

Scott Morris (Ninjitsu)

Predictions: --- ;(

OOC: I stopped writing this from Knihti's view. This is now just a follower diary with a twist of having reader made fighters in the game. And also, in the fights I decided that in what submission the match ended etc. as I can't know how it ends as I'm just a follower... Made sense?

UFC 2: Downward Spiral Review

After an another exiting night of UFC action, here is Daniel Keeley with his review of the UFC 2: Downward Spiral:

Kazuo Takahashi vs. Jason Delucia

An average match from these two as Delucia took a victory from this match with a nice Kimura in the end of the second round. Delucia via Submission(Kimura) in 9:58 of Round 2

David Levicki vs. Kevin Rosier

The first ever UFC match to got for decision. Levicki took a victory with points of 39-37, 40-36 and 39-37, so Levicki took this via Unanimous Decision. The match was average.

Remco Pardoel vs. Teila Tuli

Decent match which was very even until the start of the 4th round as Tuli started a rampage and demolished Pardoel with a series of hard shots from the mount. Tuli won via TKO in 0:58 of Round 4.

Co-Main Event for the UFC Heavyweight title: Brock Lockhart vs. Scott Morris

Lockhart showed his wrestling skills in this great match as he pushed Morris to the side of the cage and took him down from there. He then moved to the side control and pounded Morris until the ref stopped the fight. Lochart is the new UFC Heavyweight champion! Lockhart won via TKO in 3:29 of Round 1.

Main Event: Heikki Knihti vs. Renzo Gracie

A fantastic main event for this night! The first round was Knihti's as he kept Gracie away with his kicks and punches. In the second round the Gracie Jiu Jitsu showed it's power as Gracie took Knihti down very spectacularly and finally in the end of the second round he managed to choke Knihti out with a rear naked choke! Renzo Gracie via Submission(RNC) in 9:02 of Round 2.

UFC 5: F***in' Up! Review

Daniel Keeley here with a review of UFC 5: F***in' Up! 199 people came to see the show of the evening and they sure weren't disappointed! The show had a mathc for the Heavyweight title and Renzo Gracie was also included in yet another great match! Here is my review from that show!

The night started with some Light Heavyweight combat as Christopher Leninger was set to face Jaseon Delucia. The match was pretty poor and it went all the way to the decision where Delucia took the match with Judge's scores of 39-37 from all of the Judges. Delucia won via Unanimous Decision!

In the second fight of the night we saw an average Heavyweight match as Gerard Gordeau took on David Levicki. The match was pretty average and it went to the Judge's decision. Levicki took the match via Unanimous Decision...

We were in the middle of the night when we saw a great Middleweight fight between "The Finnish Flash" Heikki Knihti and Murilo Bustamante. The first round was a draw in my opinion and in the start of the second round Knihti hit two hard leg kicks and everything was set up. He went for another but instead of a leg kick, he went for the head and Bustamante didn't realise it until when he woke up a minute later. Knihti won via Knock Out in 0:44 of Round 2.

The Co-Main Event of the night and we see Renzo Gracie fight his second fight and this time it's against Trent Jenkins. The match was great and Renzo showed his ground skills as he took Jenkins down and moved to the mount where he just pounded the living hell out of Jenkins. Winner via TKO in 1:31 of Round 1... Renzo Gracie!!

The Main Event of the evening is a match between the Champion, Brock "Lionheart" Lockhart and "The World's Most Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock. They both are Undefeated and Shamrock has been talking some serious s**t about Lockhart ever since the match was made. Lockhart just promised a fantastic match and that was exactly what we got. The match started with the both of the fighters getting a feeling of each other's reach. Shamrock the shoot for a takedown and that was exactly what he managed to do. He was in the Guard and he tried to lock in the Toe Hold but Lockhart managed to get up and he moved straight to the Mount. He pounded Shamrock with some elbows and then he launched a fiery right hook right to the chin of Shamrock. Shamrock was rocked but the ref came in and ended the fight. Lockhart recovered his title with a spectacular win over Ken Shamrock! Winner by TKO in 3:52 of the 1st Round and STILL the UFC Heavyweight Champion, BROCK LOCKHART!

The match was great and it ended in the second round as in the middle of the round Jons missed a right hook and Lucarelli took him down. Lucarelli got to the side control and he started to pound Jons with elbows. After a few of those elbows, Jons was knocked unconsious. Gracie saw that this was his place and he locked the Diving Guillotine Choke! Ichihara tapped out! Gracie defends! Winner via Submission(Guillotine Choke) in 5:12 of Round 1 and STILL THE UFC Middleweight Champion... I'm talking about UFC 7, of course! 225 people came to see this wonderfull night and they sure got their moneys worth! But here is ze full réview:

The opening bout of the night was between Teila Tuli and "Nasty" Zane Frasier. It was a great fight and the first round of the night was very even and we even saw a right which knocked Frasier down in the final seconds of the round. So, in the second round Frasier turned the tides and he managed to knock Tuli down with a 1-2 combination right to the kisser! He followed him to the ground and started to pound. Tuli tried to sweep but Frasier saw that his time had come and he managed to lock the Armbar! Tuli tapped out and Frasier won via Submission(Armbar) in 9:36 of Round 2!

Time for the second fight of the night and it was between Murilo Bustamante and Fred Ettish. The fight was great and it started with Bustamante's double leg takedown. He got right to the side control and he started to hit elbows to the face of Ettish. Ettish managed to cover himself and he pulled Bustamante down so the hit's didn't have any effect. Bustamante knew what he did as he moved to the mount and POUNDED the LIVING F**K out of Ettish... The ref stopped the fight and Bustamante earned a victory via TKO in 1:24 of Round 1!

We were in teh middle of the night when we saw "The World's Most Dangerous Man" take on "Grizzly" Remco Pardoel. The fight was the worst of the night even tought it was a good one! The start was a back and forth boxing match until in the fourth minute Shamrock managed to hit Pardoel with a stiff right straight which he followed with another right and he managed to knock Pardoel down. He followed up and he unleashed enough punches on Pardoel that the ref decided to end the match! Winner via TKO in 4:26 of Round 1... KEN SHAMROCK!

Co-Main Event of the night and it's held between Masakatsu Funaki and Heikki Knihti. This was another great match as we saw a long and hectic match between these two! The first three rounds were extremely even as both men had a lot of offence and they both were very tired before the start of the fourth and final round! The round started with Knihti swinging his hands around and he managed to hit Funaki with a huge left hook. Funaki was down and Knihti went straight to the mount ending the match with some brutal ground-and-pound! Winner via TKO in 0:23 of Round 4, Heikki Knihti!

It was time for the last fight in the Octagon in this event... Or should I say... BROCKTAGON!... Yeah! Umm... Well, time for the Main Event and it is for the UFC Heavyweight title! First stepping to the rin-... Octagon, the reigning and the ONLY UFC Heavyweight Champion ever... BROOOCK LOOOOCKHAAART! "Lionheart" looked pumped up as he walked towards the Octagon with the belt around his waist. He got to his corner and stretched a bit and the it was time for "The Russian Bear" to make his way to the Octagon. Taktarov walked slowly to the cage and got into it... The ref checked 'em both and started the fight... Lockhart started with a series of jabs and he managed to catch Taktarov once to the nose. He threw few more jabs and then he shot for a takedown! Taktarov tried to sprawl but Lockhart was just too much for him! "Lionheart" Moved to the half guard and hit Taktarov with a few heartless punches. The he saw that his time had come and he moved straight to the mount! ELBOW, ELBOW and another ELBOW~! The ref saw enough! Lockhart defends in a FANTASTIC match. And it was time for veteran voice of the Octagon, Bruce Buffer! The winner via TKO in 1:57 of Round 1, and STILL THE UFC HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD! BROOOCK LOOOOOOCKHAAART!

Few fighters cut by UFC.

Ultimate Fighting Championships President, Richard Branson informed us that UFC has cut a few fighters from their pay rolls. UFC 8: Heaven's On Fire review:

Yet another great event from UFC. This is Daniel Keeley with my review of UFC 8: Heaven's On Fire. 178 people came to see the best fighters in the world and they sure did see the best and the worst...

The night started with maybe the MOST boring fight ever. 4 rounds of two men pushing each other towards a fence... David Levicki drew with Art Jimmerson in this VERY POOR match!

Next it was time for Jason Delucia to take on Sean Daugherty. It was a fairly good match as in the middle of the round one, after some vicious striking from Sean Daugherty, Delucia managed to take Daugherty down! Delucia managed to move to the side control where he locked the Americana to end this match! Delucia via Submission(Americana) in 6:33 of Round 1!

We were in the middle of the night as Patrick Smith and Gerard Gordeau got to the Octagon. Their match was great as in the first 10 seconds Gordeau's High Kick dropped Smith to the ground. Gordeau followed him and made him tap via Armbar! Gordeau via Submission(Armbar) in 0:35 of Round 1.

Time for the Co-Main Event of the night as Renzo Gracie and the Gracie train made their way to the ring! Robert Lucarelli was waiting in the ring and he sure looked pretty scared of his opponent and he had a good reason to fear! This match was fantastic as in the beginning they, for everyone's suprise, started with a lot of boxing. They continued to box for the half of the round until Lucarelli's right hook managed to knock Gracie down! Lucarelli followed and started to pound from Gracie's guard! The ref was ready to stop the fight but then Gracie suprised everyone with a sudden Triangle Choke! Lucarelli taps out and the winner via Submission(Triangle Choke) in 7:31 of Round 1... Renzo Gracie!

It was time for the Main Event and this match was for the UFC Light Heavyweight title. My biggest suprise was that Delucia didn't get a title shot as he has the most wins in the LHW division! But to the match which was a good one! Alberta Cerra Leon and Christopher Leninger were ready in the Octagon as the referee, "Big" John McCarthy told them the rules and started the fight! The first round had a lot of striking and it was dominated by Cerra Leon! In the start of the second round, Leninger caught Leon with a leg kick which slowed him down so that it was easy for Leninger to take him down. Leninger stalked him and finally after a 1-2 combo, he shooted and took Leon down! He moved to the mount and started to throw elbows at Leon. Leon tapped out before the Ref stopped the fight! Christopher Leninger is the first ever UFC Light Heavyweight Champion! Winner and the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion via Submission(Strikes) in 2:41 of Round 2... Christopher Leninger!

UFC 9: Betrayed review

Daniel Keeley welcomes you! Thou has decided to read my review of UFC 9? Great! 216 people decided to see this phenomenom called UFC and I sure hope that those watchers would help UFC and the whole MMA biz to grow! But here is my review of the night which had suprises and cakes!

The night started with the fight of the night between Kevin Rosier and Johnny Rhodes! It was a great bout between these two and the match started with Rosier's dominance while standing but then, for everyones suprise, Rosier shooted and managed to take Rhodes down with a spectacular Single Leg! Rosier moved smoothly on the ground and finally he got to the mount where he started to throw wild elbows! Rhodes tried to push Rosier away but Rosier took a grip of his hand and locked the armbar! Rhodes taps out! Rosier wins via Submission(Armbar) in 4:02 of round 1!

Then it was time for a poor wrestling match between Keith Hackney and Kazuo Takahashi. They threw 13 punches in the whole 40 minutes of fighting and most of the fight was just Takahashi pushing Hackney to the fence. Winner of this poor match via Unanimous Decision, Kazuo Takahashi!

It was time for the third fight of the night as "The Russian Bear" fought against "Grizzly". This fight was a pretty average one as the first round was just Taktarov dropping bombs and Pardoel trying to dodge them! But in the second minute of round 2 Taktarov finally landed a big punch which was enough to drop Pardoel to the ground. Taktarov jumped after him and before Taktarov had time to unleash any punches, the Ref stopped the match! Winner via TKO in 1:59 of Round 2, "The Russian Bear" Oleg Taktarov!

Time for the Co-Main Event of the evening and it is for the UFC Welterweight title! It was a good back and forth match between Ray Wizard and Thaddeus Luster. Both men had their moments but the fight went to the judge's hands! 29-25, 30-24,28-26 were the votes of the judges and so the winner via Unanimous Decision and the new UFC Welterweight Champion of the world... Ray Wizard!!

"I'm gonna win, you just watch me!" was what the reigning UFC Heavyweight champion said in the press confrence two days before the UFC 9. Now it was time to prove his words as he was making his way to the Octagon! Ken Shamrock waited in the ring for the match to start and then it began. Lockhart showed that he had improved his striking as he punched Shamrock with nice combinations. Then in no-suprise, Lockhart took Shamrock down with ease! He was on Shamrock's guard. In a blink of an eye, Shamrock had turned the tides and he was now in Lockhart's Guard! What a sweep from Ken Shamrock! Shamrock is giving fiery blows to the head and body of Lockhart! Lockhart manages to get his legs in and he pushes Shamrock away! Shamrock stands up. KNEE BAR FROM SHAMROCK! Lockhart taps out! IT IS ALL OVER! Shamrock takes what's his and becomes the new UFC Heavyweight Champion via Submission(Knee Bar) in 3:15 of Round 1!!

UFC cuts and signs fighters!

UFC announced that they are going to cut the contract of Remco Pardoel (0-3) after his next fight! They also informed that they have signed Rumina Sato, a 20 years old Submission Wrestler from Japan who is supposed to fight in their Lightweight division, and Jack McGlaughlin, 26 years old American fighter!

UFC 10: Hotter Than Hell card revealed!

UFC 10: Hotter Than Hell review

Hello, Daniel Keeley here again with another exciting night of MMA. 241 people were interested to see Gracies in action and they sure weren't disappointed! But here is my review of UFC 10: Hotter Than Hell (It rhymes :o)

So the night started with a Light Heavyweight match between Jason Delucia (3-0) and Guy Mezger (0-0). This was a decent match and it went all the way to the judge's decision where Mezger was victorious via Majority Decision! What an upset!

Second fight of the night and it's between Heikki Knihti (2-1) and Scott Baker (0-0). The beginning was dominated by Knihti. Baker knew that he wouldn't win on stand up so he shooted but Knihti countered his takedown attempt with an uppercut that knocked Baker unconcucious. Knihti won via Knock Out in 2:15 of Round 1!

We were in the middle of the night when we saw the Gracie train for the first time this evening. Now making his way to the ring was Renzo Gracie (3-0) who was going to face Minoki Ichihara (1-1). Renzo made short work of this as he took Ichihara down immidiately and within a short period of time he had locked the Kimura and Ichihara had tapped out! Gracie via Submission(Kimura) in 1:15 of Round 1!

Co-Main Event of the evening and both of the fighters, Alberta Cerra Leon (1-1) and Felix Mitchell (0-1) were ready in the Octagon! The first round of the night was taken by Mitchell as he kept pushing Leon to the fence and giving some nice dirty boxing! The second round started with Mitchell again pushin Leon to the fence but after couple of minutes, Leon managed to turn the tides. He hit Mitchell with a shocking elbow to the chin which knocked him down. Leon followed him and started to pound him with hammer fists. The ref stopped the fight and Alberta Cerra Leon was victorious via TKO in 4:03 of Round 2!

Main Event... The UFC Middleweight Champion Royce Gracie (3-0) vs. Murilo Bustamante (3-1)... As the fight began, everyone was waiting for Gracie's takedown and then he shot! Bustamante sprawled and managed to stuff the takedown attempt. That was the formula of this night all the way to the last round. They were both exhausted. We were in the fourth minute of the round 4... The fighters clinched and then we saw something which is impossible! Some kind of a Flying Armbar from Gracie! Bustamante taps out immidiately and the fight was over! Gracie defends his title via Submission(Flying Armbar) in 4:17 of Round 4.

UFC announce their next show.

Richard Branson from UFC informed us with the card of their next show. UFC 11: Destructive Appetite will be held in Thursday of Week 2, January 1995. We'll see the new UFC Heavyweight champion Ken Shamrock in action and in the Co-Main Event we see the former UFC Heavyweight champion in action! UFC also informed that they'll be cutting Minoki Ichihara (1-2) from their roster once his contract runs out.

UFC 11: Destructive Appetite card:

Main Event for the UFC Heavyweight title: "The World's Most Dangerous Man" Ken Shamrock (4-1) © vs. Kevin Rosier (2-1)

Co-Main Event HW: Art Jimmerson (0-0-1) vs. Brock "Lionheart" Lockhart (3-1)

HW: Johnny Rhodes (0-1) vs. David Levicki (2-0-1)

LHW: Sean Daugherty (0-2) vs. Roland Payne (0-0)

MW: Heikki Knihti (3-1) vs. Frank Hamaker (0-0)

MMANews New Year's Special!

This is Daniel Keeley from the MMANews with a New Year's Special! We'll be giving awards for many different categorys including Fighter of the Year and Fight of the Year and of course, many more! We will also look for the top 10 p4p fighters in the world! But here are the awards and the winners!

MMANews End Of Year Awards 1994:

Fighter of the Year: Royce Gracie!

-Who else could have won this? Renzo Gracie maybe but in our opinion, Royce was the man of the year with his undefeated streak and by being the reigning UFC Middleweight champ! He's had 4 fights in his career and he has beaten first three of them in the first round! We will see that will Royce continue his amazing streak in the year 1995!

Rookie of the Year: Ken Shamrock!

-The reigning UFC Heavyweight champ and a naturally talented fighter. He is the king in ending matches as he has had five fights in career and all of them have ended in the first round! He was TKOed by Brock Lockhart in UFC 5 but he made a return by beating Remco Pardoel in UFC 7 and he finally defeated Brock Lockhart in UFC 9 for the Heavyweight title!

Rise of the Year: Renzo Gracie

-Renzo is the second greatest of the Gracie family and the only thing keeping him from being the #1 in the family is the truth that Royce was given the UFC Middleweight fight instead of him! Renzo has a perfect 4-0 record and all the wins have shown his supremacy in the ground!

Promotion of the Year: UFC

-Are there any other options? No! UFC is the pioneer of MMA. Led by Richard Branson, they've built a low level popularity in the USA and they've had great shows for the whole year!

Show of the Year: UFC 1: Live! Sold Out!

-This started it all. Who could forget this great night of MMA. In the opener we saw one of the greatest matches as Ray Wizard won Orlando Weit in their first encounter! In the Main Event we also saw Royce Gracie become the Middleweight Champion! This night will be remembered for a LONG time!

Fight of the Year: Ray Wizard vs. Orlando Weit

-This was their second fight as they fought an EXCELLENT fight in the UFC 6: Stay Hungry. Wizard took the victory via Submission but this sure was the fight of the year. The fight was full of speed and this was a fight that made Wizard a true contender to fight for the UFC Welterweight title!

Worst Fight of the Year: Kevin Rosier vs. Scott Morris

-This sure did suck... This is the only reason why UFC 6 wasn't better than UFC 1! How can 2 people have so bad fight? Ask from Morris or Rosier...

Knock Out of the Year: Heikki Knihti vs. Murilo Bustamante

-You MUST remember this! A brutal head kick which kept Bustamante unconcious for several minutes. This kick showed the world the KO power of Heikki Knihti.

Submission of the Year: Royce Gracie vs. Murilo Bustamante

-Royce showed the basics of BJJ by doing a spectacular Flying Armbar which caught Bustamante in a suprise! Royce is the #1, no questions asked!

Main Event of the Year: Renzo Gracie vs. Heikki Knihti

-Fantastic fight from these two on the Main Event of UFC 2: Downward Spiral. Gracie won the fight with a submission but this will be remembered from it's speed and the technical aspects of these two!

Upset of the Year: Guy Mezger defeats Jason Delucia

-I almost cried after this! Delucia is my favorite fighter. Mezger defeated him with Majority Decision in UFC 10. This sure did drop the reputation of Delucia but it made Mezger the #2 Light Heavyweight fighter!
