NLPW - A new beginning

Recommended Posts

The time is 10 pm December 20th, 2009. The place Tohoku, Japan. More specifically the office of head booker, and owner of Warrior Engine XXV, Mr. Ryu Kajahara. We are in the middle of putting on one stellar show. A perfect way to close out the year. I have no idea why I was called in here.

Ryu: Glad to see you. I suspect you've seen the card and know who your opponent is.

???: I seen the line up and am well aware. I just want to thank you for putting me in such a high profile....

Ryu: Well what you don't know, is your opponent, Munemitsu Senmatsu (spits on the floor), that ungrateful little turn coat. I made him a star, I made him the big name he is today. Do you know what he plans on doing.

???: I don't....

Ryu: He's signing an exclusive deal with BHOTWG, tonight is his last night with us. So much for loyalty, so much for...

???: ( Now it was my turn to interrupt ) With all do respect...

Ryu: EXACTLY!!! So much for respect. You, you have loyalty. You know a lot about respect. Before I get too far off topic let me get to the point. In your match tonight, I want you to shoot on him. Teach him respect and remind him of his place.

???: Shoot? You mean like go out there and intentionally try to injure Munemitsu (Ryu again spit on the floor), to serve your needs.

Ryu: Yes. That is the kind of shoot I was referring to.

( I stroked my beard and pondered for a moment )

???: You see Ryu the only thing...

Ryu: Good so you'll...

( I stood up slamming my massive hand down on his desk.)

???: You've interrupted me enough since I've been in your office. Now I'm going to speak and you're going to listen. Shoot on him!?! Have you gone senile? Yeah its true I've been in this business for a long time. Yes I know about respect. You want me to go out there and try to purposely injure a young wrestler just because he's trying to make a better life for himself? I've sat by and watched as the world of wrestling changed around me. I like to think I changed and adapted well enough. But this, this is one change I can't adjust to.

( I turned to leave the room when I heard Ryu speak again )

Ryu: Does this mean you're not going to shoot on him tonight?

( I turned around and stood in his face )

???: Not only does this mean I'm not going to shoot on him, it also means that you can find yourself a new main event for tonight. Find some other lackey to do your dirty work. Here's an idea why don't you dust off you're old ring boots and get in the ring with him. You shoot on him.

With that I grabbed my bags from the locker room and left. I took the shuttle to the airport where I purchased a one way ticket. I had several hours until my flight so I sat there pondering what I would next. I signed autographs for the pleasant Japanese fans that recognized me. Finally it was flight time. I boarded the plane and settled in for the 26 hour flight home. The peace and serenity of the Alaskan mountains. Whats next for me.

From another perspective:

The time is 9 am, December 26th 2009. The place Anchorage, Alaska.

Another cold day. Another cold, cold, cold day. I bundled up two pairs of socks, my thermal pants and shirt, my snow suit and boots and finally my parka. I grabbed the axe and headed out the door to chop some fire wood. I ventured into the woods and found the perfect little tree to use to keep warm. I raised my axe and began to chop. As soon as the steel hit the wood, it started to snow. Big surprise there. I raised my axe to deliver the final blow when through the flurry I saw a man trudging through the snow. No one's headed up to that cabin since...

No it couldn't be, but look at the size of those foot prints he's leaving behind. I shook it off and delivered the fatal blow, knocking over the undersized tree. I hauled the tree back to my cabin and cut it into more desirable pieces.

I retreated inside with a small bundle of wood, just before the winter storm really let loose. I put a couple of logs on the fire and poured myself a shot of bourbon. " Ahhh, nothing like a smooth shot to take the chill of your bones" I found myself saying out loud, to myself. Now I know what some of you might be thinking its not that I'm crazy, far from it actually. When you keep yourself as reserved as I do you have to do little things to amuse yourself. I stretched out on the floor in front of the fireplace with another shot of whiskey. I gazed into the fire and downed the second shot. Waiting for the storm to die down. My eyes began to feel heavy and I threw another log on the fire before dozing off.

I awoke several hours later. The fire was almost out and the snow had stopped completely. I bundled myself up again and headed out the door. As I entered the garage I started to get in my truck and stopped with the keys just inches from the lock. On second thought I decided to take the snowmobile it would be much easier that way.

I pulled up outside my favorite watering hole and turned off the engine. I was surprised the place that is usually quiet was full of life and could be heard clearly throughout the silent, cold night air. I pondered heading back to the cabin and drinking alone. " Well I had already come this far, might as well have one before I head back. "

" Hey stranger " the bartender greeted me as I approached the counter. " The usual " I nodded looking around. I saw a large man sitting with his back to me surrounded by the majority of the other patrons. He seemed to be the reason behind the change in atmosphere. Its funny but he looks an awful lot like... No, I told myself, he was gone.

I kept my parka hood up and took my usual seat at a booth in the corner. As I sat there sipping my bourbon, I noticed it suddenly got darker in my corner booth. I noticed the frame of a large man standing next to the table. " Still the man of mystery, I see. " That voice it was him, but what was he doing here?

The Story continues:

???: Is this seat taken, Grand?

Grand: It's a free country ain't it.

???: Still the man of mystery I see.

Grand: A man like me needs his privacy. I'm not as out going as you are.

???: I'm glad I ran into you here, I wasn't sure if you were still around or not.

Grand: I thought you were gone for good. Over in Japan, making a bigger name for yourself.

???: Well I'm back now old friend.

Grand: (chuckles) You got room to talk gramps. You're a lot older than I am.

???: That's true.

Grand: So what brings you back to the cold white north, did you get homesick?

???: Needed to sort some things out. Times they are a changing, wrestling isn't about the love of the sport anymore. Owners don't care about putting on a good show for the fans anymore. All they care about is profit, respect and profit.

Grand: Sounds like you had a good time over in the land of the orient.

???: Drop the sarcasm I want to talk to you about a business offer. I know how we can change things, or put up one hell of a fight trying.

Grand: You know I left the wrestling business.

???: I know but you did some amazing things in PSW. You helped to develope that prmotion into the rising contender it is today.

A smile came over my face for the first time in a long time.

Grand: Yeah those were good times back then.

???: Look at you talking like you really are old. It was only two years ago. Why don't you come back to my office so we can talk business.

Grand: Only because we're such good friends.

We exited the bar and he helped me load my snowmobile into the back of his truck.

Grand: So where's this " office " of yours at.

???: You'll see.

With that we were on our way.

Up next thy Unveiling...

Here we go:

User Character: http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq90/itzme_017/NLPW/TheGrandAvatar.jpg

Grand: This is the Anchorage Civic Center, What are we doing here? They're not exactly open right now.

???: It doesn't matter if they're closed I've got a key.

Grand: What you the janitor or something? ( laughs again. )

???: (laughs) No no nothing like that. I told you I wanted you to come to my office.

( He leads me through the hallway towards a door which he stops in front of and opens waving me inside.)

???: Have a seat and look at this (slamming a thick binder on the desk and pointing to the chair), not a whole lot of eyes have seen this.

Grand: I'm honored but I don't want you to get your hopes up about whatever business you wanted to talk to me about.

???: No worries old friend. Besides I think I can trust you well enough to look at that.

Grand: What exactly is it?

???: Its a business proposal I prepared to show to potential investors. While I was able to squirrel away a nice sum of money, it takes a lot more than one would think to build their own wrestling promotion from scratch.

Grand: Now you've got my interests peeked.

I started thumbing through it and he continued to babble. This stuff was amazing. Inside was a cover letter to investors which I quickly passed over. The second was a letter addressed to my friend: Here are the Glossy photo prints of the logo's you requested. The letter was signed by Kamchatka's logo and ring company.

Your Company Logo:

http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq90/itzme_017/NLPW/NLPW_alt.jpg"

Grand: Northern Lights Pro Wrestling. Sounds Promising enough the I continued through the binder.

The banner you requested for you ring aprons and web site (Data disc enclosed) :

http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq90/itzme_017/NLPW/NLPW.jpg

Your ring is in production and upon completion will be shipped to the address you provided us.

Grand: He's already got a ring in the works...?

The next page was another letter this one mentioned title belts. I couldn't believe it when I read it, it was signed by ReapeR's Title Belts INC. How did he manage to have the most sought after belt making company, design and create his title belts?

Champion of the Klondike ( World ):

http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq90/itzme_017/NLPW/NLPW_Klondike.jpg

Alaskan Champion ( Mid card/floating ):

http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq90/itzme_017/NLPW/NLPW_Alaskan.jpg

Mountain Men ( Tag Team ):

http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq90/itzme_017/NLPW/NLPW_MountainMen.jpg

I paused reading through the portfolio. Then looked up at my friend who was still talking about this idea as I was reading it.

Grand: This looks amazing. We're good friends and all, but I'm no investor.

???: Don't you worry about that just keep reading.

The next page was a profile for a worker. He couldn't have a roster already could he...? Hey I know that guy he's the buss boy at the local diner.

http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq90/itzme_017/NLPW/ChristianSands-Profile.jpg

At the bottom were some links to indy matches he's had as well as some info from my friend.

" He may not be well know right now, but I guarantee you he is the hottest young talent in wrestling today. He's agreed to sign a written deal before there is even a promotion. With this man on our roster I can promise you growth. I can promise you profit. Most importantly I can promise you a full return on your investment."

The last page was a closing letter thanking people for taking the time to read through his business proposal as well as a list of people/companies who have agreed to match my friends investment 100%.

Grand: That's incredible, but I still don't understand what this has to do with me.

???: You see I'm going to have my hands full being owner of this company as well as being an active competitor, not quite ready to let that part go, I just don't want to get too bogged down. So I'm going to need someone to book the matches, setup angles, etc. etc.

Grand: So in other words you're looking for a General Manager of sorts? I don't know about that...

???: Don't get ahead of me. What I'm proposing, seeing as how you like your privacy and suffer from a fear of public speaking, is this: You'll be more like an owner than a head booker. I want you to control everything from who works for me to who gets fired to finances things like that. The only difference between an actual owner and you would be you still have to go through me. I would take on the more actice " On Air " role of a headbooker/ GM what have you. Hell you don't even have to be on location with us to do your job. You can work from anywhere with your laptop or PDA even. So what do ya say?

I looked at my friend then back at the binder he had me skim through. I stood up and shook his outstretched hand.

Grand: I'm in.

I walked out of the office and turned back to look at the door: Mr. L. Wood. I can't believe I'm working for Larry Wood. Thats something I never thought I'd hear myself say.

Stay tuned preparing for our first show...

I was excited by the time I got home, excited to the point where I couldn't sleep. I fired up my laptop and got to work creating a website for NLPW. After that task was complete I pulled out my roll-a-dex and started sending emails to people I knew. Why most would think the obvious place to start would be wrestlers, I worked backwards from what I believe to be the heart of any good promotion, The staff: I sent out emails to a few referee's, announcers and color commentators and probably most importantly road agents. Then I zipped through a list of wrestlers. Not expecting any responses tonight I turned in for the night.

I awoke in the morning to my phone ringing. I couldn't find it before the person hung up. I looked and seen that I had a voice mail from Larry:

http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq90/itzme_017/NLPW/LarryWood_alt3.jpg:

" OK Grand I hate to tell you this through a message but I just wanted to lay down some ground rules, while you are basically running things for me I'm still in charge and I wanted to give you some guide lines as far as hiring people go. If you can't hire anyone for $1,500 or less then you'll have to find a suitable replacement. The wrestlers you hire must have at least a D- grade, via the portfolio I emailed to you, in toughness and stamina. We want to take wrestling back to when the matches were longer and not a lot of soap opera drama. As for the toughness thing, we don't want to be wasting money paying someone who is injured all the time and can't help us bring in revenue. One last thing, In two years time we must have at least as much popularity as we do right now. It isn't a lot but the buzz from me promoting and that website you created has given as little boost. Now go make me proud. "

I hung up the phone and pulled up my email I seen the portfolio Larry had sent to me. I can't believe he's scouted and graded every active wrestler. Along with his email I had also received and Email from Eric Tyler and Crippler Ray Kingman, two of the best free agent road agents on the market. I opened one at a time and read almost identical responses. They said while they respect me and Larry Wood our company wasn't big enough for them to come and work for. I could respect their decision, if I wasn't such good friends with Larry, and him telling me I wouldn't have to be on tv at all I wouldn't be working for his company either.

It took a few days and several dissapointments later but I was able to get a modest roster put together. I was able to persuade Larry to let me hire some more experienced wrestlers by telling him we were gonna need someone to help teach the ' young lion ' staff he wanted. He said he wanted a company where these up and comers could be more than cannon fodder to help the old school guys stay on top. He also gave me a curve ball when I was mid-way through my hiring phase. The wrestler had to have at least a D- in selling as well. He wanted these matches to look as real as possible. Then lastly when he reminded me that business is business and all personal stuff aside, we (as a company) could not fall into debt at anytime.

I updated the website with a roster page and a scheduled events page. Luckily TCW had to cut some guys from their roster as they continued to battle with SWF for domination in American Wrestling. That helped me to bring in some much needed star power.

The Short:

Larry Wood comes down to the ring to adress the fans.

" Ladeis and Gentlemen, let me be the first to welcome you all to the inaugural show for my new wrestling company. NLPW stands for Northern Lights Pro Wrestling. My fellow Alaskans know all to well what the Northern Lights are, the shining light in the north. That is my vision for this company. I want this to be a place where all the talented rising athletes can come and develop their skills without fear of being attacked physically and verbally if they leave for a company that provide them more money. Hopefully those stars will choose to make this the company they call home. Ladies and gentlemen may this be the start of a bright and prosperous future of professional wrestling. Welcome to Aurora Borealis. "

The Short:

Nomad defeated Running Wolf in 3:23 by pinfall with a Drift Shift.

" The match started off a little awkward, an odd pairing between the bright Canadian prospect, Nomad, and the virtually unknown Native American, Running Wolf. Running wolf was trying to keep the match brawl based while Nomad was trying to get the crowd into the action with some aerial moves. If it wasn't for the hard work of NLPW's resident Road Agent, Duncan Kendall, the match would have been a total wash. The two finally found a way to incorporate both styles in an even balance using a back and forth momentum. After cheap shotting the crowd favortie Nomad was able to hit the Drift Shift, putting an end to this debaucle before either man was exposed for their lack luster ring work. "

The Short:

In a bout that had a good crowd and some decent in-ring action, Keith Brothers defeated The Punk Rock Xpress in 9:36 when Greg Keith defeated Clash Rotten by submission with a Proton Lock after blatantly cheating. Keith Brothers win the NLPW Mountain Men titles.

" The crowd's interest was peaked when theys seen some faces they recognized the first through the crowd was the Keith Brothers, they received a small pop which was short lived when they started arguing with the fans, establishing themselves as heels. Next through the curtain came some familiar faces, with a new look. The newly formed tag team of The Punk Rock Xpress. The crowd was pumped to see these four superstars go at it. The teams meshed together pretty well and put on a match with back and forth momentum giving each participant a chance to show off their skills for the crowd. Matt was pulling most of the heat for his team while Gregg relied on dirty tactics in the ring to draw heat. Ace and Clash used their high energy and well accepted gimmick to help get the crowd fired up. In the end It was the dirty tactics being implored by Greg that won the match and the titles for the Keith Brothers. "

Christian Sands had an interview hyping his upcoming singles match with Jack Griffith.

" Finally, the day of reckoning has come. Finally, my name will be chanted throughout arenas nation wide. Finally the day has come for Chritian Sands to enter the world of professional wrestling, and on that day the face of professional wrestling will be changed... Forever!. So you listen to me jumpin jack flash, your time has come and your past. You've been to the mountain top and back, but when you step into that ring with me I'm going to show you what its like to still be hungry. The Short:

In a bout that had a good crowd and good action, Christian Sands defeated Jack Griffith in 9:42 by pinfall with a fast roll up.

" The crowd was really pumped up now, riding from the tag match moments ago and the spontaneous promo put on by the hometown hero, they anticipated the entrance of his opponent. Jack Griffith came out microphone in hand. This isn't the 80's boy my name is Jack Griffith, not jumpin jack flash. I will teach you some respect. With that he hit the ring and took control of the match and refused to let Sands get any kind of momentum going his way. One mistake was all it took for Sands to be able to mount an offense mixing in aerial moves and some great technical chain wrestling he had Griffith on the ropes. Jack started cheap shotting Sands to regain control of the match. After a near fall that , in his mind should have been a 3 count, Griffith took his eye off his opponent to argue with the ref. Sands hit him from behind with a dropkick that sent him sailing into the ropes, and on the rebound quickly rolled him up school boy style for a 3 count and a victory. "

The Short:

Steven Parker had an interview hyping his upcoming singles match with Randall Hopkirk.

" Here I stand in the ring of another, new promotion. Another chapter in the book that is my life. I am beyond the shadow of a doubt the most talented person in that locker room. They book me in a... qualifying match. To earn a shot at earning, the second place title. When you have a superstar of my caliber on your roster, you don't treat me like this. I should be competing for the world title. Not having to earn my shot. I turned down USPW. I turned down TCW. Hell I even turned down SWF. To come here, they said this is the future of pro wrestling, I told them I am the future of Pro Wrestling. They have me wrestling some washed up brute from Tee-Cee-Dubbya. They let him go because he was overpaid and couldn't cut it. I'm going to expose that nothing has changed..."

The Short:

In a bout that had a good crowd and some decent in-ring action, Steven Parker defeated Randall Hopkirk in 14:42 by pinfall with a Future Shock.

" Parker was cut off by Hopkirk's music, who hit the ring like wildfire. To a mixture of boos and cheers from the fans in attendance. I think they were only cheering because he got Parker to shut up, leveling him with a vicious clothesline as soon as he entered the ring. The match was good but could have been better if Parker wasn't trying to outshine Hopkirk. (Maybe he needs to be reminded that in this business you work with your opponent not against him.) Hopkirk used his size and strength to bring him down a few pegs slowing down the pace of the match. Parker proved why he is called " The Future " he was able to work at his pace as well. Hopkirk had Parker hoisted in the air for the randallism finisher, but Parker was able to escape with a thumb to the eye. He landed on his feet and kicked Hopkirk in the stomach, he grabbed his head and signaled for the end and nailed him with a future shock.

Larry Wood had an interview hyping his upcoming battle with Fumihiro Ota and Billy Jack Shearer.

" Its all coming together. The main event is here ladies and gentlemen. Tonight we crown our first ever Champion of the Klondike. My fellow Alaskans, you know the importance, the history that comes with that title. A very famous man once said " To be the man , You've gotta beat the man! " Tonight right here I am telling you that I AM That man. There's also another saying that goes something along the lines of " to prove you are the best you need to compete with the best " and I think our resident match maker has done a good job of doing that. The Short

In a bout that had a good crowd and good action, Larry Wood defeated Fumihiro Ota and Billy Jack Shearer in 20:11; the order of elimination was Fumihiro Ota first, and finally Billy Jack Shearer. Larry Wood wins the NLPW Champion of the Klondike title.

" Billy Jack Shearer walked out of the curtain last and shocked both the wrestlers and the fans. He and Hopkirk were only months out from being released from their contracts with TCW, and now they are here in NLPW. The match was a little awkward as it was an odd trio to have in the ring together. Wood and Ota tried their best at calling the match in the ring but BJS still looked lost and confused at more than one point in the match. Despite his size difference and polar opposite wrestling style, one of the things I like most about watching Ota compete is his ability to adapt to anyone's style and put on a good show. The match ran long and fatigue was clearly visible in all three men. Ota and BJS decided to double team Wood leaving him prone in the corner. BJS irish whipped Ota towards wood for an impressive body splash, as soon as he turned around though he got caught with a brutal kick to the side of the head knocking Ota down and after a 3 count out of the match. BJS underestimated the resilience of Wood though as he arrogantly taunted the fans Wood stood to his feet and showed him just how a running boot to the head should look. BJS was down for the count and NLPW has its first ever Champion of the Klondike.

Breaking News: Aurora Borealis received extremely positive feedback from the fans. The local promotion has really outshone the larger promotions with its efforts.

Breaking News: Due to the overwhelming success of Aurora Borealis, NLPW has grown from a local promotion to a Small sized company.

Due to our increase in size, Larry Wood has instructed me that we need to hire more wrestlers to flesh out our roster, less we look like an amature promotion. I have several people in mind, but must select the best three. Steve Flash was the first to respond to my offer but was still asking more than Larry would allow me to pay. I am still determined to bring him into the company one way or another. I still have a few more contract offers out there any of which I think will make excellent additions to our roster.

In other news Aurora Borealis 2010 will be available on DVD this weekend and is for sale exclusively through the merchandise section here on NLPWrestling.com. Even if you were in attendance for this monumental show, I personally recommend you buy this, you get to hear the comical commentary of Joker the Pimp and Hustler D. Check out this sound bite for example: " You heard the man welcome to Aurora Borealis. (Joker)" " That's right ladies and gentlemen Northern Lights Pro Wrestling welcomes you to... Norther Lights... (Hustler)" " You guys are too much can we just focus on the action and get through this night? (Jerome)"
