Return to the Golden Era

Recommended Posts

Hey Kid...

All my life I had dreamed of being a professional wrestler. So you can imagine my excitement when one day Crippler Ray Kingman shows up in my gym while I am training. After watching me chain wrestle for about 10 minutes, he called me over and says "Kid, you are gonna make a great Ref some day."

Before I could let my disappointment set in he tells me, "Look, I'm promoting a bunch of shows in the area and my boneheaded son forgot to book a referee. I don't have a lot of money left to pay one, but if you'll take the job, as well as driving me around, I'll pay you in knowledge as well as money."

How could I pass up the opportunity to learn from a legend? So I took the job, however the knowledge he passed on had little to do with in ring work and more to do with officiating and backstage duties. (Like getting the promoter his coffee.) But, as he warmed up to me he began to explain to me why he booked things the way he did. I soaked it all up.

After the tour I spent some time booking for a few indy promotions in the area and with my new found refereeing ability as well as my willingness to get coffee I found my pay days picking up. About a year later I heard a familiar voice in the gym. It was the Crippler. He told me that with the success of the previous tour he was looking to start a company in the area. His son was supposed to help him out, but had instead taken a gig in Japan. He then offered me the opportunity of a lifetime to become the full time booker for his new promotion. (As well as being referee and gopher). Of course I said yes.

First Things First

The first order of business was the product. Crippler and I agreed that we wanted to run a traditional product that focused on In-Ring action with a splash of the entertainment side with a few angles/interviews.

For the title belts Crippler explained that "Return to the Golden Era" was as much a concept as it was a company name. That's why he had purchased the rights to a belt he once held, which would serve as our main Title and provide a link to the past.

APWF Heavyweight Title

And our other belts would be the...

United States Tag Team Titles

we may have other belts later on but this was our starting point. He then handed me a press release with the company info:

Return to the Golden Era

Owner: Crippler Ray Kingman

Booker: Gable Brands (that's me)

Style: Old School

size: Small

Ranking: 27th

Location: Midwest

Crippler then charged me with putting together the roster, but he gave me a few ground rules:

1. We must make money, and have at least 100,000 grand in the bank by 2 years from now.

2. He doesn't care of we grow, but we are not to fall any lower in the rankings than we are now.

3. No one that is hired can be rated below D- in Psychology, Resilience, or Industry Reputation

Lastly he showed me our tiny production area, although we didn't have tv we could still shoot interviews for TV ads and to put online. I gave him a surprised look when he mentioned the web, and told me he was a little more in tune with technology than a certain mid-atlantic promoter. To prove it he pointed out the blue screen he had purchased in the 80's that we could use to put logos and things behind the guys when they did their interviews.

I once again thanked him for the job and set out to put together our roster.

So I made the contacts, Rip Chord and I had a good long talk and although we didn't set up any formal agreement, he had no issue with me giving more ring time to some of his talents especially since Crippler was involved.

As I sat down with my list I told Crippler I had worked out the budget and we should turn a profit every month. I told him I didn't shy away from bringing in some bigger names, even though we knew their time with us may be limited. It was important to make a splash, and hopefully guys would give us the courtesy of doing the job on the way out the door.

The Roster:

Main Event

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/AmericanPatriot.jpg

American Patriot is perfect as a lead babyface. Easy to cheer and he's been Rips top guy for a while now.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/MatthewKeith.jpg

Matthew Keith is of course Sam's son. He's currently headlining for PSW. This guy will be gone before long. I recommend we use his star power as much as we can before that happens.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/NelsonCallum.jpg

Nelson Callum is another guy who has been working on top for PSW and who was trained by Rip. Solid wrestler who will do well for us.

Upper Midcard

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/DeanWaldorf.jpghttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/MarvStatler.jpg

The Ring Generals are a rock solid team to build a tag division around They are currently holding the titles for Stomper.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/JasonOConner.jpghttp://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/RobbieMcNamara.jpg

The Fighting Irish are a part of the Stone's tag division. You know these guys have been working with some of the best up there and I'm hoping they can break out and really prove they can be a top team.

Midcard

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/BrettStarr.jpg

Brett Starr is another legacy worker. With our connection to the past I think its only fitting. He's been known to have a bit of an attitude but I'm hoping the positives he brings will outweigh the negatives.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/CameronVessey.jpg

Cameron Vessey will be working solo for us, though we may try tagging him up with Starr. Unfortunately their tag partners Jay and Casey were unwilling to consider working for us. But he's another guy with a solid background who will likely become a big part of the company.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/GregGauge.jpg

Greg Gauge is another guy with great talent that may not be around long. He's been working in Japan and isn't as well known in the states as his brother, but he still brings a lot to the table.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/RhinoUmaga.jpg

Rhino Umaga will bring a different look to the roster. As he focuses more on brawling than technique he will stand out from the crowd, but at the same time I think his style will meld well with the rest of the roster.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/Youngblood.jpg

Youngblood is a lesser known wrestler who has recently started working for Rip. I think he's a guy we can build around long term.

Lower Midcarder

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/Ant-Man.jpg

Ant-Man is relatively new to the business but was trained in the Piledriver school. I'm a big fan of his work and I think he's a guy we can really build around. And, he's so strong he could scoop slam Kanishoki on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/ArthurDexterBradley.jpg

Arther Dexter Bradley is more of a cruiserweight and I'm not sure how his style will fit in with the company. But he came as a package deal with Rhino and I was only too glad to give him a shot to convince Rhino to sign.

Opener

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/DavisWayneNewton.jpg

Davis Wayne Newton may not be a huge name now, but he will be. His friendship with Callum is also a plus.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y140/jerem77/RGE/NigelSvensson.jpg

Nigel Svensson comes to us from Sweden via Wigan. I think our intended fan base will really rally around this guy's style even if it may get over with the Supreme type fans.
