NWA 1989: Tradition To Innovation

<strong>Oh no, not another diary!</strong></p><p>

<span style="font-family:'CENTURY GOTHIC';">I am sure that is the exact reaction that some of you may have when seeing this from me. But give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, right? I have been thinking about this for a very long time as some of you may know.</span></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Is Your USPW Diary Dead?</strong></p><p>

<span style="font-family:'CENTURY GOTHIC';">Not in the least bit. With cutting both diaries to around one show per week, it should give me plenty of time to work both diaries from an in-ring standpoint and an out-of-ring standpoint.</span></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Why the NWA?</strong></p><p>

<span style="font-family:'CENTURY GOTHIC';">Being a southern wrestling fan, the NWA is what I truly grew up on. I was always much more of a fan of the NWA/WCW than I was a fan of WWF/E. Even so, I did struggle on who to select and went to others for advice on what they would prefer to see. I thought about going for a more independent company as well. But in the end, I decided that the NWA is the place for me, especially in this transition period where Ted Turner has made the recent acquisition. I believe there is a real story to be told there.</span></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>In Conclusion...</strong></p><p>

<span style="font-family:'CENTURY GOTHIC';">Thanks to everyone who is going to give this a chance. Thanks to those who I have spoken with behind the scenes. To those of you who chose WWF, I hope you will still read this and that it will be an enjoyable read to you. This diary is going to start off much like my USPW diary did in the slow-burn fashion that is behind the scenes before we even get to the first show. So it may be a month before we even get to the first show. I am planning on making a few changes as well, which will become evident soon enough. Thanks, once again, and I hope that everyone enjoys. Feel free to comment, etc. at any time during the process. Your feedback is what makes this all enjoyable.</span></p></div><p></p><p></p>

TRADITION

[...What is the one word that I think of when trying to describe the National Wrestling Alliance? T - R - A - D - I - T - I - O - N. This is the one group that has managed to survive the global takeover by Vince McMahon and the steroid alliance that he calls the World Wrestling Federation. Oh, wait, I'm not allowed to say that, am I? Vince might cast a lawsuit in my direction. But when you look at guys like Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior what else can you truly think? Vince has always had this little obsession with bodybuilder types who cannot necessarily go when they are inside the ring. But, then again, much like Vince McMahon, I am not a wrestler. I have set foot inside a ring before but never as a wrestler. As a fan growing up, they had times at certain independpent shows where you could go in and have a picture made with your favorite fan favorite wrestler. That is about the only time that I set foot inside the ring before now...]

[...My name is Scott Robinson. I am thirty years of age and I have been working for Ted Turner for several years now as part of his legal team. In 1988, I helped Ted Turner when it came to the purchase of Crockett Promotions and the National Wrestling Alliance name. You see, I found that there was a loophole in the copyright of the NWA name that could be exploited and when I did so it gave the history of the NWA to Ted Turner. Ted seemed very impressed with me. I continued to plug away at my job within my cubicle until August of 1989 when I was called into Mr. Turner's office. It seemed that Ric Flair did not enjoy the job of being Head Booker and Mr. Turner was looking for someone more within his corporate staff to head the company. After a short interview, Mr. Turner decided to give me the job overseeing the NWA's affairs. Of course I will be answering to him but most of the decisions will be made by me. Welcome to the new NWA...]

[...It was at a tv taping in Augusta, Georgia where I finally made my presence known to each and every one of the wrestlers. I stepped into the backstage area and looked around seeing wrestlers like Ric Flair, Bob Orton, Jr., Lex Luger, Junkyard Dog, The Steiner Brothers, The Road Warriors and more. I sucked in a deep breath and spoke up, drawing their attention and getting them gathered around closely...]

Scott Robinson

"Good evening. As I am sure you all know, Ted Turner's acquisition of Crockett Promotions comes with certain changes. Some of these changes will be in your favor and some will be in more of a corporate favor and falling in line with the company. My name is Scott Robinson and I am the man assigned by Ted Turner to oversee the National Wrestling Alliance brand. I have been a fan all my life of this company and I feel..."

Ole Anderson

"So you're just some kiss-ass corporate suit fan brought in here to tell us what to do?"

Scott Robinson

"Actually, Ole, I am your boss. So please don't interrupt me here."

[...I sighed as Ole looked to charge me, making a fist with his hands. I stood my ground and he was stopped by Ric Flair and several other wrestlers. Ric and Ole exchanged words I couldn't hear...]

Scott Robinson

"As I was saying, I know that the NWA stands for tradition. I have a lot of plans for each and every one of you. I am going to be taking the next month to evaluate the roster and to see where money needs to be brought in and see where it needs to be taken out. I also look forward to getting to know each and every one of you on a more personal basis as we move forward. Thank you and have a wonderful show this evening."

[...That was all I had to say so I turned and headed toward a small room that would stand as my office. I have one month to get settled in before I would really be taking over. Time to start working on exactly what I told them I would be...]

I'm looking forward to this as a fellow native southern wrestling fan. This was a pivotal year going into 1990. The first half of 1989 was perfect but the the latter half could've used some tweaking to set the NWA up for better success into 1990.

Always good to hear from another native southern wrestling fan. And the latter half needing tweaking is what I am here for. :D

Great start, angeldelayette. You know I'll be reading :)

Glad to hear you'll be reading, my friend. I hope you enjoy this one as much as my USPW diary. ;)

[...Sitting there at the table, the first thing that I needed to go over was the roster itself and the title holders. I had been given a list by Ric that he made of each wrestler and where their position on the roster is so I would begin there. The roster was also seperated by color: blue for babyfaces and red for heels...]

NWA ROSTER

Main Eventers

Junkyard Dog

Ric Flair

Terry Funk

[...The first group that I looked at were the top stars within the company. Among this group is one half of the NWA Tag Team Champions, NWA Television Champion, NWA United States Champion and NWA World Heavyweight Champion. My first thought is to move the United States and Television titles down lower to some of the more up and comers so that they have something to fight for. My second thought is just how talented this group is. Ric Flair in particular is someone I have great plans for...]

Upper Midcarders

Rick Steiner

Road Warrior Hawk

Scott Steiner

Stan Lane

Z-Man

Bam Bam Bigelow

Butch Reed

Kevin Sullivan

Mike Rotundo

[...Looking at this group, the one thing that stands out to me is the tag team division here in the NWA. It is absolutely stellar. With The Fabulous Freebirds, The Road Warriors, The Midnight Express and the newly formed Steiner Brothers we are looking at some great tag team action right here in the NWA...]

[...After looking at the roster and title holders, the next thing that I looked at were the television shows. Right now, the NWA is holding three shows: NWA Power Hour, NWA Worldwide and World Championship Wrestling. Out of the three, the seemingly most vulnerable show for cancellation would be NWA Worldwide. After all, it's the only one not on a Turner Broadcasting station. I decided to cancel NWA Worldwide when I took over next month. Judging by the books and the numbers that is one show entirely too many. I also decided to make NWA Power Hour more of what they call a 'B' show here in the business. It will give some of the younger talent or talent that I cannot figure out what to do with a chance to be on national tv. Plus it gives us a way to plug our future television shows and recap what has gone on during the main show: World Championship Wrestling. I have also made a phone call with Ted Turner and gotten World Championship Wrestling cleared for an extra half hour to move it up to one and a half hours. With all of that set up, it would seem that I am ready to go to Mr. Turner and let him know that beginning in September 1989 I am more than prepared to run this company. Hopefully that running will be in direct competition with the WWF, rather than being run into the ground...]

Well first and foremost, I loved your old WCW diary and of course I am a fan of your USPW diaries, so you know I will be reading.

Good to see Bob Caudle in this diary. I used to love his (over) reactions when the bad guys used to beat up on the faces.

This roster seems a bit weird to me. I know that you have nothing to do with it and the mod was the one that set it up. That being said I don't remember Sid's being a Main Eventer at this time. Besides World Class, I don't remember Michale PS Hayes ever being a main eventer.

Stan Lane should be swapped with Ole Anderson in my opinion. Jimmy Garvin shouldn't be an opener he should be at the very least a midcarder. But like I said it is not your doing and these are just my opinions.

Glad to see the late great Buzz Sawyer on the roster. And the Midnight Express!

I have no idea who the two jobbers are: Jason Knight and Nitron. Unless that is the Jason Knight that was in ECW (was there a Jason Knight in ECW?).

Anyway, enough of my ramblings this is going to be another great diary from you and I wish you the best of luck with it.

Reading as well. Been looking forward to this. I love NWA/WCW from this era, and its been a pretty strong inspiriation to my own current diary. Keep up the great work, angel.

Always great to see a comment from you, Bigpapa42. I, also, love NWA/WCW from this era and it's one of the reasons that I chose NWA over WWF. Though I was technically only 8 years old at this time, I can still remember watching the shows as a child. They hold some fond memories for me.

Glad to hear you'll be reading, BHK1978. Hopefully you'll be making some comments and predictions too. ;) Anyhow, I completely understand your stance on where the wrestlers are as far as their roster positions go at the beginning. These may change as I move on with this diary as obviously certain guys will gain more focus than others.

I recall the name Nitron from my youth as a bodyguard for Woman and looking him up it turns out that he is Tyler Mane, the same guy who plays Michael Myers in the recent Halloween remakes. I believe he was also known as Big Sky at one point in WCW. Jason Knight is, indeed, the same Jason Knight from the early ECW days. Though technically Wikipedia lists his debut date as being later but we all know how reliable Wikipedia is.

NWA POWER HOUR*

Cactus Jack vs. Tommy Rich

The Skyscrapers vs. The Dynamic Dudes

Well seeing how Sid is in the Main Event, I highly doubt Shane and Johnny will get the win here.

Norman The Lunatic vs. Jason Knight

I think I may have been the only Norman the Lunatic fan ever.

The Wild Samoans vs. The Steiners

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Jason Knight vs. Terry Funk

The Funkster for an easy victory.

Bobby Eaton vs. Mike Rotundo

NWA World Television Title Match: Sting defends vs. The Dragonmaster

I hardly remember The Dragonmaster but from what I remember about his he was not all that great. And Sting has always been one of my favorites.

Scott Steiner vs. Michael Hayes

Wow this was back when Scott looked like a normal person and could actually speak coherent sentences.

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. Cowboy Bob Orton

No way is Bob Orton big enough to win the title.

Well, we've all heard of Jack and I've no idea who Rich is!

The Skyscrapers vs. The Dynamic Dudes

Is this Dan Spivey and Sid Vicious? I'm guessing the Dynamic Dudes are Shane Douglas and Johnny Ace? Forgive my stupidity! Hopefully I'm right, and I'm going for Skyscrapers.

Norman The Lunatic vs. Jason Knight

Had to look up Norman too, but seeing as no-one seemed to know Knight and Booger is, well, just that, the choice was easy.

The Wild Samoans vs. The Steiners

I'd love for a Samoan win but The Steiners are the up-and-comers.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 1 September 1989

Jason Knight vs. Terry Funk

See the above...

Bobby Eaton vs. Mike Rotundo

I always liked IRS when I was younger so I'm going to have to go for Rotundo here.

NWA World Television Title Match: Sting defends vs. The Dragonmaster

It's Sting, nothing else needed.

Scott Steiner vs. Michael Hayes

Tough one but I think Steiner will stay as a tag teamer for a while longer.

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. Cowboy Bob Orton

Doubt you'd change title on TV...wooo!

It looks like you're going for a more competitive WCW Saturday Night show rather than what was done in reality in 1989. Not a bad thing at all and really, I wish the NWA had been forward thinking at the time and did that. They had the names and athletes to pull it off. Especially if Ted had opened up the wallet and gotten guys like The Rockers, Curt Hennig and Bret Hart.

The thing that is going to suck for you is the Freebirds. With one being in the main event and the other being an opener. It is going to be hard for them to defend their titles.

That is definitely going to make things a little more difficult but that is also part of what is gonna make this interesting. Just to see how things shape up.

The first show may end up being a little different than what the shows are from that point forward as the new head booker definitely wants to have a bang-up show to start with. But the NWA definitely has some great current names and great future names as well at this point. And do look for other wrestlers to come on board as well.

There was a feeling that a number of the angles used did not reach the standards set by the in-ring action.

This show can be considered a success, it should have increased our popularity.

Jason Knight vs. Terry Funk

[The wild desperado of J-Tex Corporation Terry Funk was dominant in this match but the fans were pretty into it. Funk focused on the leg of Jason Knight, ramming the leg against the ringpost outside the ring and distracting the official as Gary Hart choked Jason on the bottom rope. Funk came back over and pulled Knight to the center of the ring, locking on the Funk Spinning Toe Hold! It didn't take much for Knight to submit.]

Winner: Terry Funk (Via Submission @ 4:23)

Match Rating: C

[...Funk held onto the submission hold after the bell rang and the official: Randy Anderson had to pull him off. Gary Hart entered the ring and gave a microphone to Terry Funk...]

Terry Funk

"Ric Flair! You banana nose gutless coward! Everyone knows that you are afraid of me. That's why you decided to make the match at Fall Brawl a tag team match. Well, let me tell you something, Ric Flair, at Fall Brawl I am still going to get my hands on you and I am going to end your career. At Fall Brawl, I am going to paint the mat red with your blood and by the end of the evening they're not even gonna have enough left of you to carry out on a stretcher. Sting, if you decide to get in my way during that match then you can join Ric Flair in the hospital and get your career ended too!"

[...Terry drops the microphone and walks out with Gary Hart by his side.]

Bobby Eaton vs. Mike Rotundo

[The crowd cheered for Beautiful Bobby Eaton as he came out without James E. Cornette this evening. Mike Rotundo came out to boos. Rotundo showed some good technical skills this evening as he tried to make the match almost like an amateur wrestling contest. Eaton broke free though and came off the top rope -- right into a clothesline from Rotundo! Rotundo hit a butterfly suplex and then made the cover, putting his feet on the ropes: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Mike Rotundo (Via Pinfall @ 5:01)

Match Rating: C+

[The former member of the Varsity Club picked up the win but he wasn't through with Eaton. He whipped Eaton into the corner and charged him with a clothesline. But the crowd cheered when someone came down the aisle...]

[...and out walked Ric Flair! Ric released a 'Whooooo' as he stood at the top of the aisle and then walked right down to the ring. He stepped inside and was given a wireless microphone...]

Ric Flair

"Terry Funk, take a good look right here and now inside this very ring because right here you are seeing the man. Do you know how I know I'm the man? Because I've got the 25 pounds of gold around my waist to prove it. Whoooo. Terry, your credentials are unlimited in this business. I'm not going to lie. But you have to take a good long and hard look at yourself before you walk that aisle because I am the greatest wrestler alive today. I'm better than Ricky Steamboat, better than Bob Orton, better than Hulk Hogan. Whoooo! Tonight, I am going to prove that I am the man when I take on another dimestore cowboy in Bob Orton. Bob, tonight, you're going to have to walk that aisle against the man who styles and profiles inside the ring. Cowboy, you're gonna face the limousine riding, jet flying, kiss stealing, wheeling, dealing son of a gun! Whooooo. And tonight I prove it when I say to be the man you have to beat the man!"

NWA World Television Title Match

Sting defends vs. The Dragonmaster

[Gary Hart brought out the Dragonmaster, who did a show with nunchakus before Sting came out with the NWA World Television Title. An above average match that suffered due to the lack of selling involved on both parts. The Dragonmaster sent Sting outside the ring where Gary Hart kicked him a few times. Back inside the ring, Sting avoided a kick and caught the Dragonmaster with a dropkick of his own! Sting whipped The Dragonmaster into the corner and then came running at him -- Stinger Splash! The splash in the corner connected and Sting moved in for the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Sting (Via Pinfall @ 8:17; Sting retains the NWA World Television Title.)

Match Rating: C+

[...The NWA World Television Champion rose to his feet, releasing an 'OWWWW!' to the crowd as he was given his belt. But what he didn't see was someone entering the ring behind him...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/greatmuta.jpg

[...The Great Muta stalked Sting from behind and when Sting turned -- Asian Mist! The mist caught Sting in the eyes, blinding him! [...Boos get even louder...]

Michael Hayes

"Just what I thought. The Freebirds tour continues right here in Corpus Christi where tonight I will go one on one with that new kid on the block: Scott Steiner. Scott Steiner, you're nothing but a Michigan loser. Tonight, I am personally gonna rock and roll all over your head and get you ready for the beating that you're gonna take at Fall Brawl with my partner Jimmy Jam."

Jimmy Garvin

"That's right, Michael. And do you know why? Because the Fabulous Freebirds are forever. We've been doing this thing for years and that's not gonna stop because we're gonna remain at the top for as long as we wanna be."

[...'Badstreet USA' kicks in again and The Freebirds raise their gold belts before heading toward the back.]

Bob Orton

"So you're telling me that you want me to lose this match on purpose?"

Terry Funk

"I don't want you to lose, Bob. I want you to kick the teeth in of Ric Flair and just leave enough for me so that I can take the belt from him."

Bob Orton

"I'll tell you what, Terry, when I win this belt tonight, you will be the first man to get a shot against me."

[...Bob drops the microphone and he and Terry continue to argue off-mic all the way to the back.]

Scott Steiner vs. Michael Hayes

[The crowd really got into this match as Scott Steiner came out with Missy Hyatt in his corner and Michael Hayes came out alone this night. Scott used some of the mat wrestling skills that he learned at the University of Michigan to keep Hayes on the ground. Hayes managed to make it to his feet and bring Scott over with a hip toss and then he played to the crowd for a moment, receiving the boos from them as the fans began chanting 'Steiners, Steiners, Steiners.' The mat wrestling continued with Scott gaining the upper hand with several submissions that ended with Hayes going to the ropes to get the break. As Hayes got to his feet he was caught with a Steinerline from Scott Steiner! Hayes rolled out of the ring for a breather...]

[...Once back in the ring, Hayes raked the eyes and then took Scott down with a forearm smash to the back. Hayes planted a boot to the back of Steiner. He pulled Scott Steiner up and whipped him to the ropes -- sleeperhold! Scott tried to fight out of it and ended up running backward, sending Hayes into a corner to break the hold. Scott turned around and grabbed Hayes -- hanging vertical suplex on the Freebird! Hayes grabbed his back in pain and Scott bounced off the ropes -- Steinerline! Scott played to the crowd for a moment too long and didn't see Jimmy Garvin entering the ring. Garvin rammed Steiner in the back of the head with the tag team gold, causing the DQ!]

Winner: Scott Steiner (Via Disqualification @ 7:25)

Match Rating: B-

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/jimmygarvin.jpg

[...Garvin helped Hayes to his feet and they both kicked Scott Steiner in the gut -- double vertical suplex on Scott Steiner was delivered with authority! The Freebirds rose to their feet just in time to spot a figure running into the ring...]

[...Rick Steiner slid in under the ropes and the Dog Faced Gremlin was on all fours as The Freebirds quickly exited the ring. Rick growled and barked at them as Scott somehow managed to get to his feet inside the ring, holding the back of his head from the belt shot earlier. Scott stood beside his brother and stared out at The Freebirds. These two teams will meet at the end of the month at NWA's Fall Brawl!]

Bob Caudle

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Bob Caudle out here with the NWA United States Champion Lex Luger. Lex, you have informed the NWA Championship Committee that you want a few moments of time so the floor is yours."

Lex Luger

"First of all, it's not just Lex Luger, it's The Total Package Lex Luger and I am the United States Championship. But let's be honest, there is no competition here in the NWA for The Total Package. There is a good reason why I hold the United States Title: no one can beat me for the belt. To that end, I have decided that at the NWA Fall Brawl I am offering an open challenge for this belt. Whoever signs up the sheet backstage first gets a shot at unseating The Total Package. But don't fool yourself, no one back there can do it."

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match

Ric Flair defends vs. Cowboy Bob Orton

[These two have a definite history together as Orton was a one time friend of Ric Flair and betrayed him before Flair won his first NWA World Title. So both men are coming into this match with some bad intentions. The start of the match was slow with Flair using some mind games on Orton. He avoided a lockup and began a strut across the ring, releasing a 'Whoooo' that was echoed by the crowd. The two men finally locked up in the center of the ring with Flair using a quick headlock into a hammerlock combination and bringing Orton down to the mat. Flair continued this mat wrestling with several combinations until he went down and focused on the knee. He gave a few stomps to the knee of Orton and then lifted him up in the corner. Flair looked Orton in the eyes and Orton raked the eyes of Flair! The crowd booed as Flair staggered around and Orton brought Flair down with a clothesline to the back of the head...]

[...Orton continued his advantage, focusing on the back of Flair, which is good strategy considering the plane accident Flair was in several years back. Orton sent Flair out of the ring and followed him outside. He slammed Flair back-first into the ring post and then rammed his head into the ring post as well! Flair staggered a few steps and then flopped on his face to boos from the crowd. Orton picked up Flair and tossed him inside the ring. He joined him back inside and made a cover: 1 -- 2 -- kickout! Orton picked up Flair and pushed him in a corner, mocking him with a knife-edge chop! Orton whipped Flair across the ring and Flair flipped over the turnbuckles and landed on the apron! Flair went running across and was met with a clothesline by Orton! Flair fell on the apron and then rolled back into the ring. Orton picked him up and dropped him with a hard hip toss. He bounced off the ropes -- legdrop! Orton made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- shoulder up!...]

[...Orton picked up Flair again and moved toward the turnbuckles. He began picking up Flair but Flair reversed it, sending Orton into the corner! Flair began lacing Orton's chest with knife edge chops! The crowd loved it! Flair threw some punches in there as well, beating Orton all the way down to the mat as Orton covered up! Flair stomped on the knee of Orton again and then brought the knee to the bottom rope, jumping right down on it and Orton cried out in pain! Flair moved Orton to the center of the ring and bounced off the ropes -- kneedrop! Flair released a 'Whooooo' that had the crowd responding as he strutted across the ring. He moved to Orton and grabbed the leg -- Figure 4 Leglock! Flair hooks in his finisher and Orton's eyes go wide! Orton fought not to submit but in the end he had to give it up!]

Winner: Ric Flair (Via Submission @ 10:49; Ric Flair retains the NWA World Heavyweight Title.)

Match Rating: A

[...Flair slowly releases the hold and he is handed the NWA World Title as Gary Hart leads two members of the J-Tex Corporation down to the ring...]

[...Terry Funk and The Great Muta surround the ring as Ric Flair sees them and raises his fists, ready to fight! Gary makes a motion and in come the Funker and Muta! Flair throws punches and chops and the crowd goes wild as another figure comes running down to the ring...]

[...It's Sting! Sting hits the ring and goes right after The Great Muta! All four men begin brawling wildly! What a way to end the show! We'll see you all next week!]
