VWA: A Mountain To Climb

Recommended Posts

After losing the files for the previous incarnation of my VWA dynasty, I have returned with a second attempt, one that is being backed-up carefully after every game month!

Victory Wrestling Association

A Mountain To Climb

May 2007. Luis Figo Manico decides to close the doors of his hugely popular Ultimate Combat Ring. European wrestling is rocked, but from the demise of one promotion came the birth of two new ones. Two new ones that are direct competition to the newest and most well-funded of Europe’s young promotions, the Victory Wrestling Association.

Whilst Ultimate European Wrestling and European Wrestling All-Stars were born out of the departure of Manico and his promotion, VWA was set up without the politics and hostility that surrounds the other European companies. Swiss businessman and multi-millionaire, Albert Thorp personally invested one million dollars of his own fortune to get the VWA off the ground. A smart business man, Thorp decided to create his own unique style mixing various popular elements of other companies; this ‘ultimate hybrid’ style also dictated that no tag teams or alliances were made.

The melting pot of wrestling concepts that forms the basis of the company is also a melting pot of wrestlers with stars coming from South Africa, Germany, America, Sweden and countless other countries. This international feel and the youthfulness of many of these workers count greatly towards what could be an impressive future for the VWA. Only time will tell whether the youthful exuberance and talent of people like Landon Mallory and Sebastian Koller, coupled with the experience of stars such as Randy Haute and Griffin can forge a legacy within the European and possibly even the world wrestling arena. Can they lead to a reinvention of Europe as a wrestling hotbed or will they ultimately stumble and not get out of the blocks?

My Story

They say a family connection is everything in the wrestling world. I’d have to say I agree... As nephew of a Swiss multi-millionaire I’d been lucky enough to be brought up in a rather wealthy household and as such had been able to afford to watch the multitude of pay-per-view offerings presented by America’s big names. To say I’m a wrestling fan is a bit of an understatement, I’d grown up on a steady diet of DaVE, SWF, HGC and a plethora of other independent leagues.

But even I couldn’t predict what was to happen on my 21st birthday. My uncle had been showing an interest in my future since I graduated high school but wasn’t about to invest in me without further education. As such I graduated university with a communications degree and went back to Switzerland to continue an apprenticeship of sorts under my uncle. The seedy world of business was harsh, brutal at times but could also be a world of great joy. And great joy was given to me on that milestone birthday as my uncle offered me a chance to mix my love of wrestling with a real business, his newly formed wrestling promotion, the Victory Wrestling Association.

One rule was to govern this offer, that being that I never revealed my true identity in the media and as such my uncle christened me The Grand Avatar. And with that, I began my fledgling career as a Head Booker for the 33rd biggest promotion in the world. Maybe one day, we can challenge the big leagues and really put European wrestling on the map. For now though, I was gonna have to get to grips with my new role. Time to learn the ropes...

Roster

Main Eventers

Randy Haute http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/us.png

Haute is the biggest heel in the company, an American born wrestler who has spent most of his career in Europe. He has a no-frills, rough as guts technical approach that didn’t excite American audiences but is appreciated by the Europeans. He was previously the head booker of VWA and also the very first champion.

Sebastian Koller http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/de.png

‘Rock ‘N’ Roller’ Sebastian Koller is one of the brightest young talents on the European scene, and is currently enjoying his first reign as champion. The young German has an energetic fast-paced approach to ring work and became a huge fan favourite almost instantly upon his arrival in the company.

Walker van Cleer http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/nl.png

Second only to Koller in terms of popularity amongst the fans, van Cleer debuted at 18 in 2006. He manages to combine brawling with strong mat work and can always be relied upon for a solid performance. With the look of a champion, it’s only a matter of time before this Dutchman is in serious title contention.

Upper Midcarders

Cub Balowicz http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/pl.png

A gruff physically overbearing Polish brawler who dominates opponents with a style influenced by mixed martial arts. A killer left hook quickly established a reputation for him as a knockout artist within the promotion. He could easily challenge the higher tier guys if given the chance purely because of his size.

Griffin http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/se.png

A solid and reliable wrestler with a strong technical leaning, the Swede has been around the European circuit for many years and can be relied upon to pull a decent match from anybody. Whilst he can grapple with anyone, he’s unlikely to rise above his current position as he is getting on in age and will not likely be about for too many more years.

Modern Day Warlord http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/no.png

A powerful Norwegian machine, Warlord has spent many years training not only in wrestling but in strongman competitions and as such can crush his opponents with his raw strength. Another wrestler that is the wrong side of thirty, but one that is likely to break into the title picture as he still has gas in the tank and will likely be about for a good few more years.

Midcarders

Acheron http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/ro.png

A monster of a grappler, the lofty Romanian has gained notoriety with the fans through raw power and menace, though his recklessness has left more than a few people with aches and pains the morning after a show. At only twenty four, there is time to improve but he’ll need to become a lot safer if he is to climb any higher in the company.

Jasper January http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/be.png

‘Double J’ is an athletic young Belgian cruiserweight who spent some time on the independent circuit earning his dues before signing with the promotion. He has managed in a short period of time to establish himself as a solid middle of the show act. He really needs an extra something to push any higher as his size puts him at a distinct disadvantage against the majority of the roster.

Landon Mallory http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/za.png

Both charismatic and a natural athlete, Landon has huge potential and the company would do well to keep hold of the young South African. Already receiving rave reviews and quickly establishing himself as a wrestler of multiple skills, the sky is the limit for this young man. That is of course if he doesn’t flake out and get too comfortable in his current role.

Matthew Macks http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/ie.png

A crazy young Irishman is certainly one way you could describe Matthew Macks. Reckless and slightly unstable is another way of putting it. Either way ‘The Irish Daredevil’ knows he can have the crowd on their feet in an instant by pulling out any number of risky moves from his ever-expanding repertoire.

Wild Child http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/de.png

Wild is the only way to describe this German who not only takes risks with daredevil aerial attacks but also adds the additional element of weapons. His willingness to risk life and limb has assured his status amongst the crowd, despite him continually berating them. Wild Child is certainly a feature of the company but is unlikely to be a feature in the main event scene anytime soon.

Lower Midcarders

Gunther Kinski http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/de.png

Small, tenacious and never without a great spirit of competition, this unsuspecting young German brawler has spent the majority of his fledgling career propping up rosters. He executes his moves well and speaks reasonably well but ultimately lacks that extra superstar factor to climb much higher than his current position.

Night Spyder http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/fi.png

The Finn, Night Spyder is known for little more than his gothic appearance and his reckless approach to ring work. A three year spell on the independent circuit led to him being recruited and since then he has been rather unspectacular and his standing within the company reflects that, often used as fodder against better, stronger opponents.

Xavi http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/es.png

This cheeky young Spaniard has only recently began wrestling and will definitely take some work before he climbs up the ranks. What we have seen of his technical approach thus far is good and with seasoning could improve but once again he lacks in size and may struggle to reach his true potential because of this stumbling block.

Openers

Jason Dempsey http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/gb.png

Dempsey is a Brit who has always enjoyed a good tussle. Prior to discovering his love of wrestling, he could often be found playing rough on the streets and upon being unable to find work within the British industry, he headed overseas and wound up here. Time will tell whether this consistent young brawler can hack it with good things expecting from him.

Moonsault Master http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/Flags/dk.png

A big Danish brawler, who as his name suggests has mastered the art of a perfect moonsault. Coupling this with his outrageous dancing, he has become somewhat of a comic relief act that generally appears pre-show. His wrestling skills certainly mean he should be noted as a future star, but for now he’s just a bit of a gimmick.

VWA Mayhem Preview

Saturday, Week 3, January 2010

Following the impressive victory of Sebastian Koller last month, Randy Haute has activated his re-match clause and will have his chance to get his hands back on the VWA European title belt in the main event. Koller will be looking to continue his impressive form, but Haute definitely has greater experience in the big-match situations.

The big Romanian grappler, Acheron will look to make his way past the young Dutchman, Walker van Cleer in a match that most definitely speaks volumes of who the next title contender may be. Both men will be seeking to put their name out there as a potential title contender in this match.

The big, hard-hitting Pole, Cub Balowicz has been given a seemingly easy ride this month as he challenges the dancing Dane, Moonsault Master. The Dane for all his comedic moments could definitely prove his value as a wrestler against the Pole. Cub will be looking to land a knockout blow in a match that he likely will view as little more than a stepping stone on the way to much greater things.

Two men both looking to prove their worth will be Landon Mallory and Jason Dempsey, who will face off in a contest billed as one for the future. The young South African has been earmarked as a potential superstar but he has to prove his value in matches like this. Dempsey isn’t going to roll over to him though as he also seeks to prove that he is a star for the future.

Finally, we’ll see the veteran Swede, Griffin face off against the young German grappler, Gunther Kinski in a match expected to be the stand-out for the night in regards to technical and chain wrestling, no doubt some great skill and technique will be on show in what we regard as a rather even contest.

As always, a night of fast-paced, hard-hitting action is expected so don’t miss out on some more mayhem brought to you by the VWA!

Well, if you're going to put my name in an early post how can I refuse? :p Enjoyed what I had read of the last one, so I'll get the ball rolling...

Sebastian Koller vs Randy Haute

No title changes on the first show rule comes into play, and since you requested that alt I've taken a liking to Koller!

Acheron vs Walker van Cleer

You described Walker as a future champion and Acheron as a Romanian Khali. Simple.

Cub Balowicz vs Moonsault Master

A dancing Dane is a worthy winner in most matches, but not against a square-jawed Pole. With a fist.

Jason Dempsey vs Landon Mallory

Mallory reminds me of Abel Xavier which, although not usually a good thing, gives him a nostalgia factor.

Griffin vs Gunther Kinski

Swedish stability...

Oh, and nice bios by the way - well written and at the same time quite helpful. He says, wait until I get 1/5 :D

VWA Mayhem #1

Saturday, Week 3, January 2010

Bremen Hall, Central Europe

Attendance: 79 people

Mayhem kicked off with the commentary team of American Dick Kerley and Icelandic Charlie Grimsson walking down to the announcers’ booth. This was followed by a short video sequence on the plasma screens making up the set. The video detailed all of the recent happenings within the promotion particularly the rise of Sebastian Koller with his ten-minute defeat of Randy Haute last month.

Griffin vs Gunther Kinski

Two technically minded athletes went one on one here in a match that at times had great sequences of chain wrestling. The pair went hold for hold continually trying to work each other down. Kinski struggled though against the much more experienced Swedish grappler. Despite his youthful exuberance, Kinski was eventually outdone and the Swede took absolute control, locking in a variety of holds aimed at taking his opponent off his feet and to the mat. Wasting no time once he’d taken him down to the canvas, Griffin locked in a Figure Four Leglock and that was all she wrote, with Kinski giving in to the pain exerted on his legs.

Griffin wins at 9:46 via submission

Rating: E+

Following the match, we cross straight to the backstage area, where in the arena’s parking lot we see the arrival of the Dutchman, Walker van Cleer. The crowd are excited for his arrival, but this excitement is muted as out of nowhere storms Acheron. The burly Romanian takes van Cleer down from behind, proceeding to slam him onto the bonnet of a car, leaving a body shaped imprint. He then picks up the now prone Dutchman who has had no chance to fight back and drops him once more onto the bonnet, before storming away. Walker appears to be down and out for the count as backstage officials race to his aid.

Rating: F+

Jason Dempsey vs Landon Mallory

The young Springbok, Landon Mallory dominated this encounter from start to finish showing the tenacity of a wrestler way beyond his years. Although the pair didn’t seem to connect and often looked awkward, the dominant display was still very evident as Mallory countered Dempsey’s feeble attempts to attack. Dempsey did shine for a short moment or two though, engaging in a fight back that almost saw Mallory taken to the mat, but the South African overcame it. After avoiding a clothesline attempt and taking his opponent down with a cross body, Landon hit the Springbok Ram to seal a tidy pinfall victory.

Landon Mallory wins at 6:04 via pinfall

Rating: E-

The newly crowned VWA European champion, Sebastian Koller emerges next to a heroes welcome from the rowdy crowd and is handed a microphone by the ring announcer. Koller states that ever since he came here at the beginning of the VWA, he intended to make an impact. He says that he was always out for the championship gold and that wasting time wasn’t something he regularly did, as shown by his ten-minute victory last month. He states quite clearly that he intends to retain his championship gold in the re-match tonight and will fight any challenger, because that’s the way a champion should be. The statement is quite clear, he’s the champion, will fight like a champion and he most definitely isn't afraid of Randy Haute tonight.

Rating: E+

Cub Balowicz vs Moonsault Master

An interesting mix of the brutal almost MMA-like nature of the Polish brawler and the comedic styling of the equally big, but rather lightweight Dane, Moonsault Master. Surprisingly, the two gelled very well in the ring, with the big Dane’s comedic moments actually blending amongst the hard-hitting action to create an interesting hybrid of comedy and realistic brutality. Cub was clearly riding a wave of momentum though as the big Polish brawler dominated for long periods, pummelling away angrily at the Dane, who to his credit withstood the raw aggression of his opponent very well. The match did seem to lose it’s way a bit in the middle, with the crowd a little uneasy as Moonsault Master continued to be pounded and it was clear as it neared it’s conclusion that both men were tiring. The dominance of Cub Balowicz eventually led to his win as he finally put Moonsault Master out of his misery and seemingly out cold with a Knock Out Left Hook to seal a solid victory.

Cub Balowicz wins at 7:58 via pinfall

Rating: F+

The newest member of the roster, Ralph Grimm is next out to the ring carrying a microphone in hand and drawing a mild reception from the crowd. The German soon shows his colours and the crowd soon start jeering as he makes claims of being that damn good that nobody in the VWA locker room can defeat him. He states his intention to go undefeated in what he called a feeble attempt at a wrestling company and take the gold off Sebastian Koller. He then proceeds to show that he can walk the walk as well as talk the talk, laying out his open challenge for tonight.

Rating: E-

That challenge is answered almost immediately as the young Belgian, Jasper January walks out to a decent applause, vowing to take Grimm’s challenge. He proceeds to state that the future is grim for his opponent, because the boys in the back don’t like arrogance. He promises to fight for the fans tonight and give this arrogant newcomer the hiding he deserves. Jasper then drops the microphone at the top of the stage and saunters down to the ring, ready to fight.

Rating: E-

Ralph Grimm vs Jasper January

This encounter was incredibly even from the start, with Grimm’s technique aligning well with January’s aerial arsenal to provide an entertaining match-up. Neither man it seemed could eek out enough of an advantage to take full control at any stage, with January resorting to fighting not only from the air but attempting to brawl with his opponent. Grimm too altered his usual attack, preferring to brawl with the smaller opponent in the hope of knocking him to the mat, where he could dominate him with his grappling prowess. Grimm did eventually take January to the mat, but only after rolling out of the way of a moonsault attempt from the Belgian. That one missed move was enough though, and Grimm capitalised rolling up his struggling challenger for the pinfall. The pinfall wasn’t a clean one however as Grimm clearly had a handful of tights, a point which Jasper attempted to argue with the referee post-match.

Ralph Grimm wins at 8:28 via pinfall

Rating: E

Acheron vs Walker van Cleer

Two men clearly attempting to put themselves into the title picture, with van Cleer surprising everyone when he walked out to face Acheron after the parking lot beat down early in the show. The Dutchman was showing signs of injury though, with bandages wrapped tightly across his chest. The Romanian brawler merely looks at the bandages as a target as the bout gets underway moving at a pace reflective of Acheron’s lumbering style. Walker struggles with the slower tempo preferring a much pacier match, but due to his injuries he isn’t able to assert control and dictate the pace of the encounter. The crowd show a lot of discontent towards the Romanian brawler as he lumbers around the ring, dropping fists and slamming his opponent several times but never really capitalising on the obvious target of the Dutchman’s bandaged ribs. This is all to the advantage of van Cleer as he mounts a comeback, using his technical knowledge to counter Acheron’s size by working his legs. Having taken the Romanian down with a Russian leg sweep, he ascends the turnbuckles and takes him to the mat with High Elevation Cross Body. This is enough to stun the big man and secure the three count, allowing the young Dutchman to secure an unlikely victory.

Walker van Cleer wins at 7:33 via pinfall

VWA European Title Match

Sebastian Koller vs Randy Haute

Yet another strong match from this pair, with some great brawling and chain wrestling making for a great contest. Koller, obviously still smarting from his quick victory last time out did look to close up shop early, attempting to hit his Hamburg Rock City finisher in the early going but was countered by a swift elbow to the upper back. Both men spent time in control of the match, but as it wore on the younger competitor, Koller seemed to have a lot more in the tank. This allowed the defending champion to gain the upper hand in the latter stages of the encounter. However, it wasn’t going to be easy pickings as Haute launched into a punch and suplex combo followed by a painful-looking high knee that could’ve put the champion out. That attack though was a last gasp attempt to secure the win as immediately following it Koller laid out Haute with a DDT, which he quickly followed up with a swift combination of kicks and his trademark Hamburg Rock City finisher. Koller dropped to the mat to secure the pinfall and successful title defence number one.

Sebastian Koller wins at 15:59 via pinfall

Rating: E+

The match may have ended, but Randy Haute wasn’t having any of it as he is back on his feet and turns around to see Koller celebrating the victory. Haute looks at Koller for a moment, staring right through the champion, who has his back to him. He then races at him, taking him down with a nasty spear to the champion’s back and then proceeds to pummel Sebastian with a series of uppercut blows. He picks him up and tosses him over his head with a painful looking vertical suplex before dropping to the canvas and yelling in the face of the champion. Haute then wipes his hands on his trunks before rolling out of the ring and walking to the back with a sly grin on his face.
