It's quite mixed as a game, which is probably where the controversy comes from.

Important thing is that even though it has the same feel and plays the same as Until Dawn to not expect Until Dawn (if you have played that, by the same studio). It's much, much shorter and so packs things into a smaller experience. It doesn't have the luxury of an extended opening like Until Dawn (which is a great horror game), and I think some people's expectations were a bit off because they thought it would be Until Dawn.

Positives are the atmosphere being good, it's very pretty, there's a lot going on, the story is a mystery you can work out for yourself (though it does kinda hand the answer to you eventually). I found the characters enjoyable but they're not for everyone for sure; there's some good banter between them but one or two obnoxious remarks apiece. Some sequences are legitimately terrifying and very very intense. There's replay value cause you can go through again controlling different characters and even multiplayer where two people control (though the complete experience is online, pass and play is just swapping the controller).

Negatives, it's quite short, if you don't get along with the characters you'll find them grating very quickly, leans on jumpscares a little too often. The staging can be confusing (I had a scene right at the end where suddenly a character was just halfway across the ship in order to react to something, presumably because otherwise nobody would have known it happened). The final act also hits a climax pretty abruptly, which I suppose ties into the length, but yeah, pacing feels weird at the end.

Overall I had fun with it but I'm unsurprised that it has received such mixed reviews. If it looks like your jam and the above negatives don't put you off, I'd say give it a go.

Man of medan was great, but indeed a bit short. But that's the trend nowadays. For every "hardcore" hobby gamer that demands at leadt 10 hours of playtime, there's several that are happy the game is over so they can do something else. Longer games get critisized for containing boring/grindy bits, so why risk more negativity.

@Blake Trask @Blackman:

Thank you both for the replies. What both of you put is what I have been reading/hearing (on YouTube) about the game. In that it is very short and it feels a little rushed. Also, the characters are not very likable and some of the story is weak.

Sadly I have never played Until Dawn, I own an XBox One and it never came out for that system. I actually planned on buying a PS just for that game a few years ago, because the game sounded awesome. But in the end I decided against it because most games are not exclusive to systems anymore and by that point I had far too many XBox games. I just could not justify buying a new system for one or two exclusive games.

Blake, I really appreciate the in depth review and it has helped me. I think I will probably end up getting it because I tend to enjoy those sort of choose your own adventure type games.

I am also a PS-less guy and what I did was just watch Until Dawn on youtube. Sure, it's not the same, but you get a 'lesser' experience. Same thing with Uncharted, which is a bit like a movie.

Btw: nowadays you CAN enjoy Beyond: Two Souls and that Origami Killer story from the same devs through Epic game store.

Picked up Kingdom Come for free. Runs pretty well almost maxed out and I'm enjoying it immensely despite the clunky combat (had to download a mod to disable the enemy targeting) and a few annoying bugs. Clocked in over 100 hours in the last few weeks so I guess you can say I'm addicted, although it helps that I don't much else to play that I haven't already completed. Played it every day for hours except the last 2 because I get severe hand cramp from the xbone controller when I use it this often.

In regards to Man of Medan...

I liked it and I actually did not dislike the characters like I thought I would. I played the game terribly though but that was my fault and nothing to do with the game.

The only drawbacks for me personally were, any time I had to do a button smash (The window to complete it was far too short and I have terrible hand-eye coordination so that does not help either. I had the same problem with TWD games as well.), and the faces of the characters. They just did not look realistic to me, they looked comical. Especially some of their facial reactions to different events. L.A. Noire came out in 2011 and I would say it had better facials (Trying my best not to make it sound like I am talking about porn.) than this game.

That is probably the exact reason. I play some fighters on and off, some cardgames and board games, and the biggest shared factor is they are all relatively simple. As with JRPG's and other serious, lenghty RPG's, when I do other things and come back to it after a month, I am horribly lost. Same thing for combat in KDC and the nifty perks specific to that game.

I wanted to try Stellaris, but the staggering amount of time I had to put into CK2 to learn the mechanics (I'm not even going to try to master it) is just scaring me. Had it with their recent Rome game as well. The tutorial was already too complicated and put me off.

I also loved Odyssey after getting tired of the "assassin" formula after 1/2/BH and never played another game until that one. I spend waaay too much time on the radiant quests and just couldn't take it anymore at the final parts of the last DLC, where they basically force you to 100% it before it unlocks the endgame. Pretty lame, but I had enough mileage out of that and will look forward to playing Valhalla eventually. Not on day1 obviously, because... Ubisoft.

Have you tried the digital version of "Sentinels of the Multiverse"? I heard about it when Adam mentioned it once in one of these threads, and the digital version has all the content for a very nice price. I haven't played it in months, but you'll probably love the style and its simplicity (yet more complex interactions if you look for it). Good interface and possible to play with friends.

You could also try Civilization (haven't gotten 6 and probably won't), but that falls into the category of games that - once a savegame is abandoned for a week or two - become very hard to get back into. But CK2 also has that, IF you're playing as a vast empire. So I'm back down to small little duchies, at the risk of indeed being bullied around. But for an immersion-freak like me, CK2 is almost the holy grail.

Stellaris is definitely a timesink. Brought it cheap for a friend and got a message a couple of days later from him telling me he'd been up till 4am each night playing it, although probably lighter in mechanics than CK2.

Civ 6 is good, but having played from the first one (and Colonization/Alpha Centuri) I struggle to come back to it.

Sentinels.. I own the physical version and the counters in that can become a absolute nightmare. I have the digital version which is easier to play but doesn't quite match bringing it to the table

For those that haven't purchased it over the years, that's a steal for gaming time well spend. Just like CK2 being free now.

Speaking of CK2: CK3 has been announced for september 1st. Gives me something else to look forward to that day. ;)

As for Odyssey: you really don't need to fully upgrade everything. Quite honestly most of the content did not feel like a grind because it's fully voiced and different enough. I'm not talking about the radiant quests here, which are obviously as repetitive as can be. :o I'm hoping Valhalla is more of the same. A little nod back to the original "assassin" style would be welcomed by most.

You didn't like the game? Or was it too depressing? :p I thought it was a solid game. I was obviously talking from the perspective of the "console-less", which I assume many of the forum are a part of. ;)

It's a little all over the place, will play itself for you if it thinks your taking too long, and kinda goes off the rails a little bit if you don't play along with what it wants you to do, which is odd for a game that is supposed to be a story impacted by your decisions.

I'm part of the group that finds David Cage to be rather pretentious, though I think a case can be made for Heavy Rain and Detroit. ( even if Detroit was way too on the nose)

regardless if you liked the game, I'm glad you got your moneys worth out of it.

It's true that these games often stick to one particular story and try to nudge the player into following the envisioned choice pattern. The more rebellious amongst us will often hate this, but I totally get it from a gameplay perspective.

The fact of the matter is that most of their customers will only play through the game once (this isn't the '90s anymore), and if you're going to provide lots of alternative content, most of your playerbase will never see it and it's arguably a waste of time and resources.

Like for Man of Medan, I watched youtube for the alternative videos, of which there were a couple, as I just don't like replaying the same things over and over, especially right after finishing one (which is when I want to see the "what if's". But if others just dismiss the game after the first play and post criticisms that is was "too short" even though they haven't seen 40% of the content, that must surely be frustrating. So best to develop one path as far as possible, as opposed to branching out, especially on episodic games. Eventually you'll be stuck developing 5 alternative paths on Walking Dead because so many people potentially could've died. You're making it very hard on yourself. People also expect the episodes to release soon after each other.

So if David Cage's actions were able to be manipulated by the player, the whole story could've warped.

I'm thinking it's probably safe to shelve CK3 for a while until the patches balance things out. But Cyberpunk should be a safe bet to play on release. I kinda forgot about it, but given I've already purchased, I pretty much got to.

I've deleted all titles from my backlog so that only Divinity:OS2 and Pathfinder remain, and the former I've kept for the month before BG3 releases, so there's still time. :D

Not big on the steampunk/post-nuclear theme so I'm not playin those, and I'm REALLY sceptical on Avengers. I'm not a Marvel fan in the first place (I never would've guessed you were ), and the gameplay I've seen looks really scripted. I might get that when it's 15$ years from now, but I doubt I'll bite upon release.

For AC it might be best to wait a couple of months. Traditionally you'll see a small drop in price for the first sale. If the preorder price for GMG is right, I might just get it already (although I don't like to live dangerously :p).

But apart from those games mentioned (CK3, Cyberpunk, BG3 and of course TEW20), that's it. I'm eagerly awaiting more Batman news the coming months, but we might not see that game before 2021. But I buy very few games on day1. Well... TEW because it's 35$ forever and I'll eventually play it religiously at some point once I'm comfortable with the AI engine.

For summer I'm probably going to catch up on tabletop games and bar visits to make up for lost time. So I won't be missing videogames, I'm sure.
