The Video Game Thread

haha i only bought it so me and my mate could do Ultimate Warrior vs Scott Steiner, now another mate wants to be Goldberg, so the perfect triple threat, my partner ruined it by wanting to be Daniel Bryan

all the game did was make me want to play I think its Here comes the Pain,

i loved that game, also Smackdown 2 or whatever it was called, had more random backstage walking cutscenes and amazing entrances of wrestlers walking with their video behind them, and a really nice picture of Trish Stratus during the loading screens

How is it cartoony? I don't recall any Looney Tunes-ish antics. It's a serious, well-told story that's drawn seriously and IMO beautifully. Have we really reached a point where we refer to everything that is drawn, or looks like it's drawn, as cartoony? Crap like this is why animation is shown no respect outside of Japan, and even then it's still a minority.

The style works for some people and it doesn't for others. I love Studio Ghibli but I'm not going to buy Ni no Kuni because the style doesn't work as a video game for me. If you like it then like it but if someone doesn't and gives his opinion without insulting the game there's no reason to try to change his mind. He didn't like the art style so he didn't play the game. He'll find games he likes and play those instead. End of story.

I know it just drives me insane when everything drawn gets described as cartoony. I feel it shows no respect for the amount of effort required for detailed animation.

I didn't mean 'cartoony' to be an insult. Perhaps I should've used the word 'animated'. I have nothing against animated TV shows and movies, I just don't appreciate that style in Banner Saga.

It works in other games: Telltale games, and platformers (Dust: An Elysian Tail, for instance, is great fun). Hell, Bastion is one of my favourite games of all time. But for me personally I don't like the art style they've used in Banner Saga. That's not to say it's not good or doesn't require talent, I just don't dig it in that type of game. From what I've seen/heard, it's a very good game and from what I've seen of the story I'd probably watch it as a movie. I'm just not into it as a video game. I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers.

It's fine, I kinda overreacted. I think it was just my accumulated frustration with animation getting no respect from a lot of people coming out on the wrong person. Thank you for being the better person and I'm sorry for acting like a jackass about it.

I also appreciate animated stuff, but they went for a Disney-look with this game, overdoing character design, and that's just not my thing. I love "The Emperor's New Groove", for example, but dislike the style in games, especially RPG's en TBS's. The way the lapdog of the evil witch - who is superthin - is superhuge. Ignore the adult content warning. The only thing adult is the theme but I recommend you play without sound as I'm not entirely sure what the explicit audio means.

Isn't it, though?

If his new one (Volume) is even half as good I'll be happy.

I looked into Volume.. Looks very interesting.. Think I may have a new VA that I adore and joins the ranks of Nolan North and Troy Baker. I could listen to Danny Wallace read a phone book

Yeah, noticed that last night. It's a bit weird though, if you own CK2 there is literally zero point in playing CK1, and if you don't own CK2, it comes in the "get these games for not being an asshole" part of the bundle anyway. So I'm not sure why CK1 is in there.

It's still a great deal if you don't already own CK2 though, since CK2+DLC is £70 on Steam (and that's just the cosmetic DLC, without the expansions. Not sure if the expansions are in the Humble deal but I doubt it).

Also, Transitor is out today. From the makers of Bastion (one of my favourite games of all time). It looks amazing, though I haven't gotten around to playing it yet. The skills system looks incredibly good.

Neither game is turn-based, though Transistor has a pause mode where you can use 'action points' to queue up moves, so you can do the combat in a turn-based style if you wish.

Bastion is an action/adventure/RPG thing, which is basically 100% story and charm, with no real mechanics other than 'hit enemy with weapon while avoiding projectiles' but is a brilliant experience that I loved immensely. It's worth playing just for the soundtrack and the narration.

Transistor is similar (as you'd expect from the same exact team - to a man/woman - who made the first one), but more combat based and less story based. There certainly is a story, but it's not constantly narrated at you like Bastion is, you kinda have to look for it. It's slightly harder to get into because it's not so instantly adorable, but it's worth sticking with it.

I have one simple question to people who are on the fence about the CK2 deal. Have you ever wished there was a game that simulated the medieval politics like in Game of Thrones? If so, pay the 20 bucks now! Crusader Kings 2 is one of the best strategy games ever made and the DLC only makes it better.

On another note, anyone else here a fan of the '08 Prince of Persia? I think it gets too much crap for being "easy", it's not like the Sands of Time games were much harder to begin with. And besides, the story is still great and the characters are still likable, which is more important for a PoP game than difficulty IMO.

I enjoyed aspects of all the PS2 games and loved Sands of Time, but I absolutely couldn't stand that re-make. And I found the princess incredibly annoying and both of them were like the next gen dumbed-down versions of the Sands of Time characters I liked, so for me at least, it definitely didn't have anything resembling likable characters. And somehow the combat was even worse than Sands of Time? I really didn't enjoy anything about it, and pretty much gave up on the franchise, since Assassin's Creed games seemed to have a better feel for what I wanted and didn't want in a "running around on walls" game.
