DAVE '97: No Disqualifications

Recommended Posts

Some Post-Show Thoughts:

- Thanks to Jingo, Timber and Dragonmack for the predictions for the last few shows. They're appreciated.

- Poor chemistry between Martin and The Wolverine is dissapointing - there were plans for a lengthy fued there in the future.

- Man, I overused the run-ins on this show. It really didn't feel like that many when I was putting it together...

- It occurs to me that I should mention that I'm not really differentiating between the regular DAVE match (which is a regular style match with the danger bumped up and time-outs and DQ's removed) and the Hardcore matches (which are generally the ones where I'm mentioning weapons or prolonged ringside mathes). In game terms there's an obvious difference, but my concept of DAVE '97 means the hardcore style matches are largely a case of the in-ring contest escalating to weapon use and brutality rather than something that's acknowledged as a specific type of match.

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:12px;">Tag Wars: The Search for an Edge</span></strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/JayDarkness_Alt.jpg</span><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/RaulDarkness_Alt.jpg</span><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/DougPeak.jpg</span><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/EddiePeak.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

It used to be there were two great tag-teams operating in the East Coast War. The first were Jay and Raul Darkness, the second were the Peak Brothers. The similarities between the two are startling – the undoubted star of both is a charismatic, psychopathic big heavyweight, the smaller brother is the less talented off the two, and they move with the kind of teamwork and chemistry that few other teams in the territory can manage. The flaws of the lesser partners don’t really matter match in these circumstances – a good tag-team is greater than the sum of its parts. </p><p> </p><p>

It didn’t really surprise me when XFW signed Jay Darkness – not only did it give them a hell of a talent, it also made them the only company with a hot young tag-team on the East Coast.</p><p> </p><p>

Despite this you’d be hard-pressed to find any company involved in the War that can be said to have a hot tag-team scene. Having the Peaks doesn’t really advantage you when the only other team in your company who has any experience working together consists of Scott and James Sinclair, especially after it became impossible to put Eddie Peak and Big Smack in the same ring without risking legitimate injury. DAVE’s most experience team after the Darkness Warriors was Black Murder, and they’re only just starting to jell together and master the intricacies of tag-team psychology. RPW has a bunch of regular teams, but none of them have any real experience together worth speaking of. PPPW seems to have an innate knack of breaking their teams up just as they’re starting to capture the fans imagination. </p><p> </p><p>

I suspect the war itself is largely to blame for these issues – it’s hard for a team to gain traction when bookers are throwing contracts and big money around to jump ship – and part of the way I’d pitched working the larger Roster to Phil was by uttering the magic words: “We can be something the other companies aren’t.” Phil may like having a small roster to work with. He may fret about the bottom line. But he really likes knowing DAVE has an edge, and he can see the possibilities inherent in cornering the market in tag-team wrestling in the Tri-State territory. </p><p> </p><p>

There are two ways to manage this, and we’re going with the long-term build. If the coffers were bottomless we’d simply bring in a bunch of experienced teams from elsewhere – PGHW’s Team Strength Rush would be idea for DAVE, as would Eric Tyler’s Soldiers of Fortune running buddies up in CGC – but that costs and it isn’t always the ideal solution. Strength Rush is always going to be better known for their Japanese work than what they do in DAVE, Soldiers of Fortune are always going to be a CGC team. These traits can be worked to your advantage when you’ve got a home team that be legitimized by squaring off against the outsiders, but when you’re lacking in teams that are thought of as DAVE born and bred it’s not the greatest use of money. It’s the same reason we don’t simply throw money at the Peaks and bring them onboard – with Cox and The Insane Heat coming in at the last show, there’s already enough talent still associated with the competition in the fan’s minds appearing on the DAVE cards. </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/BryanHolmes.jpg</span><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/ThomasMorgan.jpg</span><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/ElijahBlack.jpg</span><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/MurderousMikey.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

So we’re currently going with the second choice – putting together new teams composed of younger talent like The Wild Boys, The Tennessee Outlaws and The Ontario Kings, giving them matches like the four-way to get over and get the experience they need to shine a year or two down the line. It takes time and effort, but when you’re done there are DAVE born and bred and the crowd can get behind them as local boys when the outsiders arrive. When we bring in established teams, they come from smaller companies where DAVE is a step up - a chance to make their name.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/RoyStephens.jpg</span><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/ChrisPerkins.jpg</span><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/BlackjackRobbins.jpg</span><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/WhiskyJack.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

The goal, in short, is to build teams who can draw on their own merits. Teams who will bring in even more money when we secure a Strength Rush or the Peak Brothers, because the victories will mean something more than "the booker's trying to get these guys over" and losses can't be written off as "obvious" due to the big name they were fighting.</p>

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:12px;">Coming up at…DAVE Boston Massacre</span></strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

<em>DAVE hits the Biker’s Paradise Bar in Boston on Monday, Week 3, of February with the following feature matches:</em></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/JohnnyMartin.jpg</span> vs. <span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/RaulDarkness.jpg</span><p>

<strong>Johnny Martin vs. Raul Darkness</strong></p><p>

<strong>Fans Bring the Weapons Match</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Raul Darkness cashes in his title shot hot on the heels of his betrayal of DAVE at Counter Culture. The last time we were in Boston Johnny Martin was taken to the limit by Raul’s brother, but the sadistic younger/elder Darkness Warrior promises this will be one of the most savage matches in DAVE history.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>and</strong></p><p>

<strong>Roy Stephens vs. Murderous Mikey</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Once again the DAVE Youth Alliance clashes with the brutal tag-team champion. The last time we were in Boston JJ Coles succeeded in kicking Mikey into a barbed war board, this time Perkins and Stephens hope to make it two-for-two for Ben Cross’ team of rookies.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/LucasHale.jpg</span><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/MichaelCook.jpg</span> vs. <span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/BlackEagle.jpg</span><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/TaylerMorton.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Lucas Hale & Michael Cook vs. Black Eagle & Tayler Morton</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

The conflict between Cook and Morton escalates as they draw their tag-team partners into the fight. Morton still holds the amateur all-star responsible for ruining his DAVE debut and match against Vengeance, while Cook took Morton’s involvement in his match against Elijah Black personally the last time we passed through New England. </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/PandaMask.jpg</span> vs. <span>http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/DogFyte.jpg</span></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Panda Mask vs. Dog Fyte</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

The most intense man in DAVE squares off against the company’s weirdest newcomer. Panda Mask impressed everyone in his clash against Vin Tanner at Counter Culture, but Dog Fyte isn’t a man to put up with the masked man’s goofiness.</p><p> </p><p>

DAVE Boston Massacre

Monday, Week 3, February 1997

Biker’s Paradise (New England) – 300 people

____________________________________

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/JohnnyMartin.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/RaulDarkness.jpg

The show starts with Raul Darkness getting thrown the curtain, already busted open and bleeding. Johnny Martin comes tearing out after him, the Darkness Warrior’s trademark Singapore cane in hand, stalking his opponent in the main event with a kind of cold fury. “I think Martin’s taking the Darkness’s betrayal of DAVE personally,” Vibert says, “and personally, I couldn’t be happier.”

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/BlackjackRobbins.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/WhiskyJack.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/RoyStephens.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/MichaelCook.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/TaylerMorton.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/BlackEagle.jpg

Whether the boss is happy or not, the brawl doesn’t last long. Wrestlers spill out of the backstage area to separate the two, pulling them apart despite their determined efforts to keep brawling. Martin is vocal in his anger: “You’re dead,” he screams. “You dishonored this company, you dishonored what we work for, you’re f—king dead.”

Chris Perkins w/Ben Cross vs. Elijah Black w/Murderous Mikey

It’s a solid-enough opener given the lack of exposure DAVE’s undercard has in the Mid-Atlantic, with Black spending almost as much time taunting Perkins and his manager as he does on offense. Perkin’s gets a little more offense than is usual for the rookies – he’s improving fast and he’s easily the best of the four in the ring – and for the second time New England proves unlucky for one of the tag-team champions when Perkin’s ducks the Soul Train and quickly rolls Black up in the aftermath for the win.

Chris Perkins defeated Elijah Black in 11:34 by pinfall.

Mikey climbs into the ring while Perkin’s is celebrating his upset, the master of the Switchblade Symphony taking position behind the young cruiserweight and looming. Ben Cross tries to call out a warning, but it’s too late – Mikey wraps his thick arms around Perkin’s waist, then hammers him into the mat with the gutwrench suplex.

“No,” Black says, having got his hands on a microphone. “That ain’t enough. Hit it again.”

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/ChrisPerkins.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/BenCross.jpg

There’s a solid thump as Perkin’s makes contact with the ring again. Ben Cross tries to make the save, but Black fends him off.

“Again,” Black says, and Mikey complies. “Again.”

Perkin’s little more than dead weight during the third shot, a fact that makes the forth impact even worse than the first three. Mikey stands over his victim, impassively looking to his partner to see whether more punishment is needed. Black turns his attention to the DAVE trainer at ringside.

“You get it yet, Cross? You really think you’re helping these kids? You may teach them tricks that’ll get them wins, you might get them to stand up for themselves, but this is all that’s waiting for them. This is the price they pay for your interference. This is what happens when a rookie oversteps his role.”

Panda Mask vs. Dog Fyte

Once again Panda Mask plays the docile animal in the opening, and his initial response to Dog Fyte’s stiff kicks is to retreat into the corner and cower. Dog Fyte is less than impressed, viciously hammering Mask with offense until his squeals of pain turn into roars and Mitch Naess gets to make his new favorite call: “ENDANGERED SPECIES ATTACK MODE ENGAGED!”

Things are a little more even after that, with Panda Mask once again getting good milage out of his ability to transition almost any move into a headscissor takedown, but the stiff offense of Dog Fyte eventually wins the day. He puts Mask away with the Detonation Sequence while Phil Vibert praises his intensity on commentary.

Dog Fyte defeated Panda Mask in 7:51 by pinfall.

Thomas Morgan and Bryan Holmes are standing in a dimly lit alleyway outside of Biker’s Paradise. Holmes stares at the camera, Morgan cuts the promo. “And so we’re back in New England,” he says. “Last time we were here, me and Bryan showed everyone why the Ontario Kings were destined to be the premier tag-team in Danger and Violence Supreme. This time it looks like the Outlaws want to challenge us, try to prove that they’ve got what it takes to step up and be the best. And they’re a tough team, I’ll give them that. They’re big, they’re strong, they hit hard. But—“

Both members of the kings go down hard as Blackjack and Whisky jump them, using half-empty bottles of bourbon as weapons. Jakki White Trash stands over the fallen Kings while her clients beat them down.

“Hit hard?” she says. “Hit hard? Son, you have no idea how hard my boys can hit. Tonight, the Kings are going down. Tonight, you fellas are going to know how it feels to be spiked through a table.”

Hale & Cook w/Ben Cross vs. Morton & Eagle

The match revolvers around the issue between Michael Cook and Tayler Morton, with Morton doing everything he can to pin the rookie technician and earn back his win from their first content. It’s a determination that almost costs him early on – Cook gets a quick roll-up, just as he did the first time the pair met, and it’s only Black Eagle coming in to break up the pinfall that saves the match for the heels.

When Eagle and Morton start focusing their attention on Lucas Hale the match immediately swings into their favor. Even Cook coming in off the hot tag isn’t quite enough for the faces to regain control – things break down fast and Morton discovers there’s no water in the pool when he attempts to land the shooting star press on Cook, but Eagle is quick to take down Lucas Hale with the New Jersey Turnpike a few seconds after.

Morton & Eagle defeated Hale & Cook in 7:39 by pinfall.

Roy Stephens vs. Murderous Mikey

This is a pretty basic six-minute brawl with chairs and tables included, Mikey doing his best to cover his deficiencies in the ring with the promise of big hardcore spots and bloodshed. It plays to Stephen’s strength – selling a beating and coming back from behind – but Mikey picks up the victory and the crowd never really buys into the match.

The Ontario Kings vs. The Tennessee Outlaws w/Jakki White Trash

There’s a fury in the King’s initial assault, but it’s tempered with speed and super skill as they pay the Outlaws back for their backstage attack. Within minutes both the heavyweights have been taken of their feet and stretched to hell by the Kings, including a tandem ankle lock spot that draws a mild pop from the crowd. It isn’t until the Kings start setting up tables, looking to beat the Outlaws at their own game, that things turn against the babyfaces.

The Outlaws get their heat it’s largely a matter of kicking the crap out of Thomas Morgan for the next few minutes, bouncing him back and forth between big haymakers before sending him into a rope for a big backdrop through a table. It’s a brutal showing and it busts the young Canadian open, but he keeps kicking out of the three count and eventually manages get the hot tag to Bryan Holmes and collapses at ringside. The crowd is firmly behind Holmes as he makes the come-back, beating down both Outlaws single-handedly, and a few minutes later Blackjack Robbins falls to a tornado DDT from Holmes to give the Canadians the win.

The Ontario Kings defeated The Tennessee Outlaws in 11:55 by pinfall.

Morgan still hasn’t moved by the time match ends, and Holmes is quick to go and check on his partner. Dog Fyte comes charging into the ring and tries to decimate Holmes with a release Suplex, but the Silent Threat manages to twist and land on his feet in the middle of the ring in an impressive display of athleticism. The two Stone-trained wrestlers go nose-to-nose, staring one another down. Soon they’re shoving one another, jostling for position, and before long things have broken down into an impromptu match.

Bryan Holmes vs. Dog Fyte

There’s not much that goes wrong here – the two men put together a technical display that reveals the similarities in their training, with Holmes proving adept at countering nearly every hold and throw Dog Fyte attempted. It isn’t until Fyte stops searching for his various suplexes and starts raining stiff kicks on his opponent that he finally gets control of the match, looking like a serious threat against his more experienced opponent. Holmes sells like a champion and Fyte generates heat with every successive kick, finally leading into a sequence where he hammers kick after kick into Holmes’ right leg before locking in the Stone Ankle Lock.

The moment Holmes succeeds in getting to the ropes is easily the pop of the night, superior to anything that came before it or is likely to follow in the main event. He favours the leg as he makes his comeback, stumbles on it as he attempts the Cyclone Shock Click, then comes back with a desperate Bridging German Suplex to pick up the victory.

Bryan Holmes defeated Dog Fyte in 14:30 by pinfall.

Johnny Martin vs. Raul Darkness

Fans Bring the Weapons Match

It starts, as so many Darkness matches do, with a series of shots with the Singapore cane he never seems to be without. Martin takes the shots across the back, keeping them where they’ll do less damage, then twists the weapon free of Darkness’ hands and blasts him across the skull. Darkness smiles like a monster heel, no-selling the shot, and invites Martin to hit him again. “He’s gone crazy,” Vibert says on commentary, “Raul Darkness has lost his freakin’ mind.”

This time the impact snaps the cane in two and Darkness is staggered but standing. He responds with a groggy discus lariat that knocks Martin down and the assault continues from there, spilling out into the ringside area as both men go to the crowd in search of weapons. Martin finds himself in possession of egg-beaters at one point and improvises a surprisingly painful three-stooges inspired spot involving the double blades and Raul’s nose. Darkness finds himself in possession of someone’s betamax VCR and uses it as a club, eventually trying to hit the Demonic DDT onto the remnants.

But after a long fight that slowly wears the psychotic Acolyte down, it’s the superior conditioning of Martin that wins him the match. He seizes an opening and secures the Twist on the Rocks, retaining the Extreme title via pinfall.

Johnny Martin defeated Raul Darkness in 21:36 by pinfall.

Coming up at…DAVE The Youngblood Tournament

DAVE hits NYC on Monday, Week 4 of February, with a showcase of the hottest young talent in the company.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/FreddieDatsun.jpg vs. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/RaulDarkness.jpg

Freddie Datsun vs. Raul Darkness

DAVE GRUDGEMATCH

Darkness may have taken a beating at the hands of Johnny Martin, but that isn’t enough to satisfy the man he robbed of victory back at Counter Culture. Datsun is looking for revenge and he’s made it clear there will be very little wrestling involved, specifically requesting the array of weapons, barbed wire boards, thumb-tacks and tables be present in the ring when he clashes with Darkness. When these two men step into the ring at the Youngblood Tournament, two things are certain: there will be pain, and there will be blood.

The DAVE Youngblood Tournament

Round One Matches

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/JimmyCox.jpg vs. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/WilliamFletcher.jpg

Jimmy Cox vs. "Hollywood" William Fletcher

Cox may have lost his DAVE debut, but he made a definitive statement when he laid Eric Tyler low with the Immortal Driver. He squares off against “Hollywood” William Fletcher, a man recently associated with the “Fabulous One” Eddie Chandler – will the Immortal Driver win the day, or has the rookie Fletcher learned some new tricks from his mentor.

Rafael Ruiz vs. Dog Fyte

Ruiz is known as the Mexican Pitbull south of the border, a reference to the technicians habit of working the same body part until a submission is inevitable. The intense Dog Fyte got his reputation for a similar tenacity, making this the Round One match to watch if you want hard-hitting action and a never-say-die attitude.

Panda Mask vs. Chris Caulfield

Panda Mask is still searching for his first win in DAVE, but the ferocity of his Endangered Species Attack Mode has taken his opponents to the limit. Chris Caulfield has spent months searching for the respect of the fans without avail, but the tournament may be his chance to prove his worth.

Chris Perkins vs. Tayler Morton

Two regular CZCW opponents get a chance to display their talent on the East Coast. Morton is still searching for his first elusive singles victory, while Perkin’s is allied with Michael Cook - the man who seems to have Morton’s number in single’s competition and the target of much of Morton’s recent ire.

Downward Spiral

-Video Montage-

The show starts with a long montage of clips from promos being cut in front of the DAVE banner and previous matches, the cuts flashing past in time with a grinding industrial soundtrack.

- cut – Chris Caulfield: Most fans think they know what it means to love wrestling. Really, they have no idea.

- cut – Jimmy Cox: They are two of the most feared words in pro-wrestling today.

- cut – Panda Mask stares at the camera in wide-eyed terror, a bamboo stalk dangling from his mouth.

- cut – Tayler Morton: I shouldn’t even be in this tournament. I’m better than Perkins. Better than Caulfield. Better than Cox.

- cut - William Fletcher: San Dimas High-school Football rules!

- cut - Dog Fyte: I’m the stiffest mutha-f—ker in the world today.

- cut – Panda Mask sniffs the camera, batting at it with a paw like a playful kitten.

- cut – Chris Perkins: For two years I worked the West Coast, getting my ass kicked time and time again.

- cut – Rafael Ruiz: They call me the Pit Bull, esse, because I never let go once I take hold.

- cut – William Fletcher: You talkin’ to me? Are you…talkin’ to me?

- cut – Tayler Morton: …William Fletcher? Dude, please…

- cut - Chris Caulfield: You have to sacrifice for the things you love. I gave my body, I gave my soul, now I’m giving the only thing I have left.

- cut – Chris Perkins: People wrote me off, said I wouldn’t make it, but I kept coming back and I learned my lessons.

- cut – William Fletcher: I don’t see anyone else here you could be talkin’ to, you must be talkin’ to me.

- cut - Rafael Ruiz: When I cinch in the lockjaw, forget about breathing.

- cut – Jimmy Cox: You want to know what I have? The advantage no-one else in this tournament can boast about?

- cut – William Fletcher: Adriieeeeennnneee! Aaaaadriieeeeeeeeeeeeeennnneee!

- cut – Panda Mask is staring again. He trembles a little, obviously scared out of his mind.

- cut - Chris Caulfield: If I can’t be respected, I’ll be hated. If I can’t be accepted, I’ll be a threat.

- cut – Jimmy Cox: Two words. Just two. Immortal. Driver.

- cut - Tayler Morton: I blame you, Michael Cook. And once I’m done here, once I beat eight other men and stake my claim in this company, I’m coming for you.

- cut – Chris Caulfield: The School of Hard Knocks is now in sessions. When I step into the ring tonight…somebody’s going to die.

Jimmy Cox vs. William Fletcher w/Easy Emma

Fletcher surprises everyone when he emerges with Eddie Chandler’s valet, and he seems intent on spending more time impressing her than he does trying to win the match. That proves to be a mistake on his part – there’s nothing particularly impressive about getting planted with an Immortal Driver, and that’s what Cox does after nearly eight minutes of solid wrestling.

Jimmy Cox defeated William Fletcher in 7:45 by pinfall.

Rafael Ruiz vs. Dog Fyte

Surprisingly this doesn’t manage to live up to the standard set by the opener, despite having considerably more talent in the ring. An even exchange between the two finally sees Dog Fyte pick up the victory with the Detonation Sequence.

Dog Fyte defeated Rafael Ruiz in 7:36 by pinfall.

Eddie Chandler is in a locker room backstage with Easy Emma and William Fletcher. The Fabulous One addresses the camera while his compatriots exchange quick glances and smiles behind his back.

“In two weeks I’m in a tag-team match with Vengeance and Ed Monton,” Chandler says. “Apparently the DAVE officials have added medical degrees to their qualifications and demanded I wrestle regardless of the risk to my health and the health of others. And tonight we face the Ontario Kings, and even though Doom has commitments elsewhere, I’ve been told to find myself a partner and perform like a trained dog.

“So be it, if that’s what it takes. Eddie Chandler is a modern-day gladiator, as hardcore as they come, and with my colleagues Doom and William Fletcher I am nearly unbeatable. Look at my record from the last two weeks – Vengeance was taken to the limit. Ed Monton was defeated clean, one-two-three, in the centre of the ring. The Kings don’t frighten me. William, do they frighten you?”

Fletcher’s attention snaps away from Emma’s curves. “Huh?”

“Do the kings frighten you,” Chandler says.

Fletcher squirms. “Um, boss-man, I already wrestled.”

“And you’re about to wrestle again,” Chandler says. “Because I tell you too. So answer the question, Will, or I’ll be vexed.”

Fletcher thinks about it for a second. “Yippie-ki-yay, ************s.”

“I’ll take that as a not at all, boss,” Chandler says. “And there you have it. Tonight the Ontario Kings. In two weeks Vengeance and Monton. The Fabulous One doesn’t back down from the a challenge. The Fabulous One will be victorious.”

Panda Mask vs. Chris Caulfield

Caulfield becomes the first person to purposely provoke Panda Mask into the Endangered Species Attack Mode, slapping the masked man and screaming “fight” until Panda Mask finally snaps and tries to savage his opponent. Caulfield thrives amid the animal fury, throwing the smaller man around, and eventually hits the Danger Drop to advance in the tournament.

Chris Caulfield defeated Panda Mask in 10:25 by pinfall.

Chris Perkins w/ Ben Cross vs. Taylor Morton

DAVE hasn’t traditionally seen a lot of cruiserweight contests, so the novelty of these two going at it goes a long way towards getting the crowd behind the match. Morton is the stronger competitor, seemingly able to counter everything Perkins brings, but the ending is a virtual mirror of his debut: he goes for the standing tornado DDT that’s become his signature set-up for the shooting star press in CZCW, and Perkins reverses it into a small package to pick up the three-count and advance in the tournament.

Chris Perkins defeated Tayler Morton in 9:39 by pinfall.

Ben Cross climbs into the ring to celebrate with Perkins, climbing the microphone as he goes. “One down,” Cross says, “two matches to go, mate. I volunteered you for this tournament, had the others help train you for it. Chris Perkins, pride of the DAVE House of Hardcore trainees.

“But that’s not what I’m here to talk about. It’s not why we’re hungry for the win, mate. You may be going up against Chris Caulfield, you may be able to beat him, but whether you win or not he’s going to learn the same thing the Outlaws learnt, the same thing Black Murder learnt, and the same thing everyone who squares off against my trainees learns.

“The might not win, but they get up. They might be bloodied, but they get up. You might put them through tables, you might bust break bones, you might force them to fight you in death matches, but they keep getting up. They learn, they rise, and they get better and better every time they step into the ring.”

Wiley Coyote vs. Black Murder

Together these two are the most experienced tag-teams on the roster, and everyone involved is adept at the hardcore brawl besides. Somehow none of that helps – Wiley Coyote and Black Murder try for a wild and out-of-control ringside brawl but it always come off a little lackluster. Murderous Mikey nails Wiley Steinway with the Switchblade Symphony for the win.

Black Murder defeated Wiley Coyote in 7:31 by pinfall.

Jimmy Cox vs. Dog Fyte

Youngblood Tournament Semi-Finale

This is closer to a shoot fight than a hardcore wrestling match, with Cox choosing to trade punches and takedowns as he searches for opportunities to hit the Immortal Driver. Fyte is a ball of aggressive intensity that refuses to go down easy, hammering a stiff knee into Cox’s eye the first time he attempts the move, but eventually he falls victim to Cox well-known finisher.

Jimmy Cox defeated Dog Fyte in 15:14 by pinfall.

Chris Perkins w/Ben Cross vs. Chris Caulfield

Youngblood Tournament Semi-Finale

And just like that things go wrong. Caulfield’s usually a giving opponent in the ring, doing his best to make his opponent look good, and Perkin’s has spent two years learning to be the ultimate underdog over in CZCW. This results in no-one really taking charge of the match after it starts, and as we roll towards the fifteen minute mark the fans have largely seen everything the two men have. Caulfield puts Perkin’s away with the Danger Drop to advance.

Chris Caulfield defeated Chris Perkins in 16:23 by pinfall.

The Ontario Kings vs. Picture Perfect w/Easy Emma

Eddie Chandler is rapidly becoming DAVE’s master of cheap heat, often breaking off the match to trade insults with the guys in front row while William Fletcher took punishment in the ring. Fletcher fell into the role of incompetent lackey like he was born to it and often the Heel’s dominance was ruined by the rookie’s attempts at things beyond his ability – applying his own Fabulous Stretch to the Stone-trained Bryan Holmes and having it reversed. Fletcher retreated back to the corner, taking comfort in the embrace of Easy Emma, and the Kings went to town on Chandler, eventually seeing Thomas Morgan pin the Fabulous One with a Trademark Finish.

The Ontario Kings defeated Picture Perfect in 15:27 by pinfall.

Jimmy Cox vs. Chris Caulfield

Youngblood Tournament Final

Both men are teetering on the edge of fatigue as the match starts, locking up early testing defenses with relative caution. It’s obvious they’ve been scouting each other throughout the tournament, coming up with counters to many of their opponent’s moves and combinations, and both men find themselves digging deep as the match wears on. For the third time the match psychology revolves around the decimating Immortal Driver, with Cox making numerous attempts to hit the move that Caulfield always fights free of, until finally he gets Caulfield up in the double-underhook when Chris is simply too tired to counter the move effectively. Cox screams, holding Caulfield in the air, staggering beneath the weight as his own exhaustion kicks in.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/TheIdahoPunisher.jpg

The Punisher charges the ring, crashing into Cox with a spear from behind. Cox, Caulfield and Punisher go down in a heap, a mess of humanity sprawled across the mat, and in moments that follow no-one rises but…Caulfield laughs. Loudly. He climbs off the mat with Punisher’s help and calls for a chair, laying it in the centre of the ring. Punisher then helps drag Cox into position and the weary Caulfield sends him into the steel chair with a Danger Drop to win the Youngblood tournament.

Chris Caulfield defeated Jimmy Cox in 21:52 by pinfall.

The Punisher pulls Caulfield to his feet and provides support while he cuts a promo. “I blame all of you,” he says. “Every bruise on Jimmy Cox’s body, every fractured rib he just experienced, all the pain he’s going to feel for weeks, months, years from now. It’s your fault it, all of it. Because of you, because of reluctance to accept me as part of this company, I’ve become the thing I hated most. You people might not love me, you might not respect me, but I can make you hate me. I made you one promise at the start of this tournament, and now it’s time to deliver.”

He glares at the crowd, his face grim, then turns to Punisher. “Finish it,” Caulfield says, “somebody has to die.”

The Punisher nods. The big man scoops Jimmy Cox up and charges at the turnbuckles for the Crush Rush, only this time he chooses to follow up with a second turnbuckle smash in the far corner before slamming Cox in the middle of the ring.

Freddie Datsun vs. Raul Darkness

DAVE Extreme Grudge Match

It’s not quite the aggression-filled show-stealer we’d hoped, but the blood-and-thunder brawling between the two men proves a solid enough cap to the night’s entertainment. Datsun beat the holy hell out of Darkness and Darkness retaliated in kind, concussing his opponent with a ladder pulled from beneath the ring before dragging Datsun up a few rungs to be powerbombed through a table. Despite the punishment he takes, Datsun draws first blood when he unearths a baseball bat covered in barbed wire and rakes it across Darkness’ forehead.

The real crux of the match, however, revolves around the barbed wire boards hidden beneath the ring. Datsun pulls them out during the final stages of the match and everything revolves around who is going into the tangle of sharp steel. It goes back and forth several time, both men fighting like hell to avoid it, but eventually the Patriot Press does the job and Datsun makes the cover while his opponent is caught on the steel barbs.

Freddie Datsun defeated Raul Darkness in 14:39 by pinfall.

Freddie Datsun is still pulling his flannel shirt free from the wire when The Insane Heat rolls into the ring, collecting the barbed-wire baseball bat as he goes. The former XFW champion stands behind the Hardcore Everyman and jams the bat against the base of his neck, forcing Datsun face-first into the wire-covered board that his opponent is still tangled in. Datsun resists as best he can, but Heat has the leverage and it isn’t long before Datsun’s head and shoulders are tangled amid the barbed wire coils.

Heat backs off a step, surveying his handiwork, then turns and walks away while DAVE officials rush from the backstage area to cut Datsun and Darkness free of the wire.

News of the War: February

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/PhilVibert.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/BenCross.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/ChrisCaulfield.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/MitchNaess.jpg

March 1st and we’re back in the office, waiting for the rankings. The conversation revolves around three topics: whether we can sustain the pace of three shows a month, even if we’re using the lower-card talent for the majority of them; whether Anna Bliss’ bar story about slapping Jerry Eisen ever really happened; and what exactly RPW was thinking when they main-evented their February show with a tag-team match that pitted Tom Gilmore and Dylan Sidle against Cousin Ezra and Lance Henderson, especially when the match preceding it (Steve Flash vs. The Guru) was five times better.

“Trust me, man, it was horrible,” Chris said. “Ez lasted about six minutes before he was gassed and Henderson just doesn’t have twenty minutes of wrestling in him to cover for the big man, even in a tag match.”

Mitch Naess snorted. “This from the man who insisted we poach Punisher to work as his tag-team partner.”

“That’s ‘cause he’s perfect for the job.” Caulfield grinned at us from his position in the corner. “And at least he can go a full match without gassing.”

Neass snorted again. Of the four of us, he was the only one who hadn’t yet gotten behind Chris’ idea to portray himself as the ultimate mark – using the fan’s dislike of him as the beginning of more complex heel character that’s driven by the discussion online and in the fanzines. And the Punisher was ideal as his off-sider given the gimmick – a big, rugged brawler who lacks the star quality and skill of guys like Eric Tyler or Brent Hill, but still distinctive enough and popular enough that he had his own fans who *wanted* someone to get him over. Philly Pro had made a run at it – Punisher was a tag-team champion when he jumped ship – but they’d routinely let him build experience with a partner before breaking the team up and giving him someone new to work with.

Chris and I started preparing for another round of “lets convince Mitch he’s wrong” when the Phil Vibert swore. “F—king Stomper,” he said. “Damn it.”

It was a familiar outburst, but we hadn’t heard it in a while.

DAVE had lost its top spot in the ratings this month.

Deathmatch for the DAVE Extreme Championship

The Insane Heat walked away from a championship to join DAVE, and in his short time here he’s won the five man war and shredded the face of Freddie Datsun in barbed wire. His attempt to claim the Extreme Championship promises to be one of Martin’s most violent matches yet.

Chandler has ducked both his opponents in recent months, using Doom as a substitute with varying effectiveness. At March into Battle no excuses will be accepted as Monton and Vengeance team up to face Chandler and his ally.

Two men who have been perennial contenders for the Extreme Championship clash with a shot at the title at May’s Total Disruption on offer. Datsun is still smarting from his recent troubles with The Insane Heat, while Eric Tyler is determined to win the title and defending it under Traditional wrestling rules in order to save the fans from the Hardcore style.

Downward Spiral

- Video Montage -

- cut – Johnny Martin: Barbed wire. Tables strewn with weapons. Like any of these things are new to me,

- cut – The Insane Heat: People talk about Martin’s bravery, but I’m not impressed by bravery.

- cut – Elijah Black, checking the run-sheet backstage with Mikey: Man, those kids again? Seriously? That wasn’t’ a joke?

- cut – Corporal Doom gives the camera a cold stare, obviously unimpressed by the question he’s just been asked.

- cut – Johnny Martin: Heat thinks this is going to intimidate me. He thinks going XFW style is going to give him an advantage.

- cut – Freddie Datsun is backstage, having his face tended by Miss Bliss after last months encounter with barbed wire.

- cut – Eddie Chandler: No, I don’t blame them. Jealousy comes with the territory when you’re as fabulous as I am.

- cut – Vengeance: I know the smell of fear, the stink of desperation. I know the dangers of bearding a rodent in its lair.

- cut – Datsun, still being tended: For years I told my daughter this business was safe, that we banged each other up instead of trying to break each other.

- cut – Eddie Chandler: And yeah, I get that they’re pissed. I think Vengeance gets kinda antsy if he isn’t pissed off at someone.

- cut - Elijah Black: Hey, Cross. Gather together your punks, yo, because we’re saying this one last time. You. Can’t. Beat. Us.

- cut – Johnny Martin: He seems to think I’m afraid of bleeding. He seems to think I’m afraid of violence.

- cut – Corporal Doom…keeps staring.

- cut – Freddie Datsun: I told her I wrestled to make a living, to put food on the table, and the other guy respected that. We fought to be champion, to make the most money, not to inflict pain.

- cut – The Insane Heat: People talk about Martin’s fighting spirit, but I’m not impressed by spirit.

- cut - Vengeance: Monton is…acceptable. He will suffice for the task at hand.

- cut – Corporal Doom...busts out the sneer.

- cut – Freddie Datsun: Turns out I lied to my daughter, cause The Heat…man, I don’t know. The Heat doesn’t care about making a living. I don’t know if he cares about anything.

- cut – Johnny Martin: Honestly, I respect his talent. He can wrestle. I’ve seen him do it. But fear of barbed wire? Come on, man. To me this sounds like a fun night out.

- cut – Eddie Chandler: Am I worried? Dude, seriously, I’ve got a former SWF champion in my corner and the Fabulous One is cleared to compete. How can we lose?

- cut – Freddie Datsun: I swear to you, on the life of my daughter, he’s going to care about me before I’m done with him.

- cut – The Insane Heat: People say there’s nothing to fear but fear itself. These people have never met me.

- cut – Johnny Martin: I mean, you won’t bleed to protect your title, it isn’t worth holding, right?

- cut – Vengeance: Blood. There will be blood.

- cut – Elijah Black: Yo, man, get this camera out of my face. You want me to say more? There’s nothing more to say, not to Cross, not to his boys.

Panda Mask vs. Raul Darkness

Darkness prods the placid Panda Mask with his Singapore Cane. Panda Mask sniffs it, then tries to take a bite it of the weapon. Raul Darkness smacks him across the top of the heat and then, as expected, ENDANGERED SPECIES ATTACK MODE! Unfortunately that’s about as good as this match gets, because the chemistry just isn’t there between the two. The feral offense of Panda Mask makes for an adequate fight, but he falls prey to the Demonic DDT in short order.

Raul Darkness defeated Panda Mask in 7:10 by pinfall.

Wiley Coyote vs. The School of Hard Knocks

Punisher and Caulfield come into this match looking for blood, throwing stiff punches that are better suited to a bar brawl than a wrestling match. Wiley Coyote try to give as good as they get, but Coyote Dynamite gets clocked across the back of the head with a pool cue Caulfield finds under the ring and the two-on-one odds that follow are too much for his partner. Punisher ends things with a Crush Rush on Wiley Steinway.

Caulfield climbs out of the ring, threatening the timekeeper with the broken stump of a pool cue while demanding someone get him a microphone, The Punisher takes a minute to clear the ring of the battered Wiley Steinway, then waits with implacable menace while his partner returns to the ring.

“I go online,” Caulfield says, “I get the newsletters, I read the messageboards. This isn’t new behavior for me. I’ve loved this business since I was kid, since I was six years old and I first saw Sam Strong take on Rip Chord. I knew that’s what I wanted to do with my life. That’s what I wanted to be.

“And right now there’s someone out there, sitting on their computer, talking about the many ways I’m not as talented in the ring as Rip Chord or Sam Strong. They’re bitching about the fact that I’ve made my way to DAVE because I think it’s easier to swing a chair than learn how to apply a figure four or a cloverleaf submission. They’re saying I’m teaming with my friend Punisher to cover the fact that I don’t know enough, that I’m getting over by hitching myself with a guy more talented than I am. They say I’m ruining pro wrestling, that I’m ruining DAVE, that I’m covering a lack of talent with blood and violence. They say I shouldn’t have won the Youngblood Tournament.

“And I know all this, because I was a fan too. Because I tell myself the same thing every night when my body protests and my eyes don’t really focus on the screen because I took three shots to the head with a chair. It’s what I tell myself in those moments when I realize that I might be good one day, but I won’t be one of the greats. I can’t be the next Sam Strong. I’ll never be the next Rip Chord. Those moments when I realize the dream is gone, crushed beneath the indifference of people who know and love wrestling the same way I do. I learned these things the hard way, and that’s why I have to pass the lessons on. That’s why I asked the Punisher to help me teach the wrestlers just like I used to be, guys like Jimmy Cox who think that one big move is going to make him part of the Hall of Immortals.

“That’s why we had to break him, me and the Punisher.”

Caulfield pauses, distraught, and the Punisher lays a calming hand on his partner’s shoulder. Caulfield swats the hand away. “Jimmy Cox didn’t break!” he screams, and the ragged violence in his voice is enough to make Punisher step back. “He’s back here tonight, banged up but willing to fight. I saw him backstage and he shook my hand, congratulated me on winning the tournament before asking for a rematch. He plans on avenging his loss against me. After getting crushed against two turnbuckles, he still wants to get in the ring with the Punisher and settle things.

“And there’s this voice in my head that says, ‘maybe that’s what it takes, Chris. Maybe he’s going to make it to that place you want to be so badly. Maybe Jimmy has that thing you’re missing, that thing that means the fans will love him when they stay so indifferent to you. Jimmy Cox gets to be great, and you get to be mediocre.

“And that thought means I don’t want to wrestle anymore. I just want to come out here and cause someone pain. I want to beat the hell out of someone and feel their blood on my knuckles.”

Caulfield sags, his rage burning itself out, and when he resumes speaking there’s a piteous note to his voice. “But it didn’t have to be this way. I could have settled for a fraction of my dream. A crumb. A tiny morsel. Just one person cheering and admitting I could be great one day. But you couldn’t give me that. No-one was willing to lie to me. And so the School of Hard Knocks was formed.

“And now Jimmy Cox has to die so the voice in my head is silenced.”

The Wild Boys w/Ben Cross vs. Black Murder

Perkins and Stephens start to find their feet as a tag-team here, delivering a more even match against the tag-team than anyone expects given the history between the four men. Their preparation is particularly telling when Mikey is in the ring – his trademark charging lariat is scouted and cut off with a low dropkick from Perkins and Stephens fights his way free of the switchblade symphony. The big man grows increasingly frustrated, especially when a quick double-team sees Stephens cover him for a two count, and it’s up to Elijah Black to save the match. He pulls Stephen’s free and sends him into the corner, hitting a Soul Train to finish the rookie off.

Mikey isn’t content with the victory – he tosses Stephens into the corner and proceeds to demolish the younger man with elbow shots, brutally beating the rookie until his face is busted open. Chris Perkins comes in to make the save, but Elijah Black trips him up and he stumbles into a Switchblade Symphony. Mikey calls for a chair from the crowd and someone throws one in, letting the big man set up the steel on Perkin’s skull.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/MichaelCook.jpg

A worried Ben Cross calls for help at the curtain and within moments Michael Cook comes charging down the ramp to make the save. His amateur credentials are put to good use as he takes Mikey down and applies the arm bar, getting good leverage on the hold. Mikey doesn’t scream, but the big man’s angry snarl is tinged with pain, and Ben Cross is immediately in the ring to prevent Elijah Black from coming in to break the hold.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/TaylerMorton.jpg

Unfortunately the DAVE Rookie’s teams moment of glory is short-lived. Tayler Morton charges the ring, making a beeline for Michael Cook, and he nails his nemesis with a soccer-style punt to the head. Cook goes limp, Morton nails him in the ribs for good measure, and Mikey nurses his arm as he retreats to Black’s side. It’s up to the battered Wild Boys to separate Morton from his prey, leaving the Rookies in the centre of the ring with enemies on either side.

The Ontario Kings vs. JD Morgan & Dog Fyte w/ Phil Vibert

The Kings don’t have a huge amount of experience behind them yet, but what little they have gives them an early advantage. Rapid tags keep the pair moving in and out of the ring, keeping each other fresh as they square off against the stiff kicks and dangerous submissions of their opponents. It culminates in both men locking in stereo Stone Ankle Lock on their opponents, although JD Morgan and Dog Fyte both manage to get to the ropes and break the hold.

Eventually Dog Fyte’s familiarity with the Kings pays dividends – he sees Holmes setting up for the Cyclone Shock Kick and sweeps the leg, taking Holmes down to the mat before tagging JD Morgan in to work the leg with submission. The pairing of Morgan and Fyte work hard to disable Holmes, but he breaks free of the two-man mugging and dives for the corner to make the hot tag. Thomas Morgan immediately fells both heels in a furious burst of offense, starting with punches and culminating in the Trademark Finish on Dog Fyte. Morgan makes the cover, but Phil Vibert pulls him out of the ring to break the count.

From there the whole thing breaks down into a brawl that sees two things happen simultaneously – Bryan Holmes nails Dog Fyte with the Final Impact while JD Morgan snaps Thomas Morgan into the mat with a Bridging German Suplex. Once again Vibert is there to pull Holmes off Dog Fyte, leaving JD Morgan to pick up the three-count and the victory.

Eric Tyler walks into the ring dressed in an immaculate suit, a smarmy grin on his face. The fans express their displeasure immediately, but the Traditionalist simply waits them out. “Do you know what separates me from everyone else in this company?” he asks. “The qualities that make me one of the best damn wrestlers in the world today?”

The crowd yells a bunch of answers that can’t be shared on a family forum. Tyler shakes his head. “Those questions were rhetorical, idiots,” he says. “It’s not like I expected any of you half-wits to have the right answer. Because there are two things that make me great – respect for the sport, and the ability to focus on the things that really matter.

“You see a lesser man would come out here and rail against Jimmy Cox planting me into the mat with the Immortal Driver that last time we passed through Philly. A lesser man would accuse Jimmy of trying to make his name at the expense of his betters. A lesser man would be…distracted…by a need for revenge.

“But I don’t need to come out here and rail against Jimmy Cox. I know he’s a punk, you know he’s a punk, and tonight I’m focused on the only thing that matters – beating Freddie Datsun and getting a rematch for the DAVE Extreme Title at Total Disruption. And I can put my focus there because I know what it means to be a champion, to put your own selfish desires aside in the name of being something greater. In the name of respect for yourself, for the sport, for the championship you carry.

“But DAVE isn’t a place for respect. And just because I’m not going to punish him, it doesn’t mean Jimmy Cox doesn’t need to see the error of his ways.

“You see, Jimmy, there’s men in this company who would kill for the offer I made you. Men who are already better than you, men who have been in the main event, men who look at me and see the opportunity to be better than the best.

“And that’s who you have tonight, Jimmy. That’s whose going to punish you while I focus on the things that really matter.”

It’s always disappointing when a talented worker has a sub-par night, but its worse when two talented workers have an off-night at the same time. That it works at all is a credit to the natural story that takes place when these two men are put into the ring – Brent Hill has legitimate claim to being one of the all-around best in the sport, capable of adapting to any style, while Jimmy Cox is a solid performer with a high-impact game-changing finisher. The pace of the match is kept furious as a result, the Immortal Driver constantly teased while Tyler calls instructions to Hill on how to break free, and eventually Brent Hill eventually picks up the win courtesy of the King of the Hill.

Vengeance & Ed Monton vs. Eddie Chandler & Corporal Doom w/Easy Emma

It’s a glorious mess of chaos and brutality. Monton and Doom square off in the opener, but neither is particularly happy about it – Monton makes it clear that he wants to get his hands on Chandler, while Doom is obviously gunning for Vengeance. Unfortunately for Doom he can’t get any momentum because Eddie Chandler tags himself in as soon as an opponent looks weak, eager to hog the glory, then quickly tags out again the moment circumstances change. The crowd is so hungry for a prolonged clash between the two big men – or between Chandler and either opponent – that they pop every time there’s even a hint that it’s coming. The tension builds to a boiling point…

…and then Vengeance launches himself over the top rope as Eddie Chandler tries to retreat into the crowd, and the crowd explodes. Doom goes chasing the pair, trying to save his boss, and the fans finally get the Vengeance/Doom exchange they’ve been waiting for as Doom’s truncheon is met with a variety of plunder from beneath the ring. Chandler quickly realizes he’d be safer in the ring while the two monsters are fighting, but he’s quick to revise that decision when he comes face-to-face with a grinning Monton. “Man, who knew that guy could smile?” Naess says, rattling off the action on commentary. “I’ve never seen a man look so happy about the opportunity to break another human being.”

Monton goes to town on Chandler, nailing the Fabulous One with a series of hard rights. Easy Emma sees what’s coming and tries to stop it, but Monton’s got her scouted and he kicks her free of the ring apron. A reeling Chandler tries to mount some defense, but he’s overwhelmed and sent into the ropes. Monton goes into the opposite direction, setting up for the Jawbreaker…

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/WilliamFletcher.jpg

…and William Fletcher is in the ring, nailing the charging Monton with a spear before the Jawbreaker connects. Fletcher and Monton grapple on the mat, the Canadian Hardcase attempting to fight free, but when he stands Corporal Doom is back in the ring (The fans who look to ringside see Vengeance momentarily distracted by Easy Emma after she leapt on his back and clawed at his mask, pulling it off-centre and blinding him).

The SWF veteran is bloodied and hurting, but he’s standing and he jabs a fist into Monton’s windpipe. Morton gapes, struggling to breathe, and Doom immediately takes him down with a lariat and makes the cover.

There’s a roar from ringside as Vengeance finally fights free of Emma and clambers into the ring. The Avenging Angel is bleeding beneath the mask, the blood trickling down from his left eye. Doom stands, his right eye already puffy and starting to turn black after a shot taken earlier, and regards Vengeance with a cold stare.

Doom lifts his truncheon, ready to strike. Vengeance holds up his right hand, revealing the heavy strands of barbed wire wrapped around his fist. There’s a momentary pause as the two men take stock of their situation…

…then they charge. Any pretence of a wrestling match – hardcore or otherwise – is gone as the two behemoths try to kill one another. Vengeance’s barbed wire fist comes dangerously close to taking out Doom’s eye, while the Corporal forces the Avenging Angel into a corner and tries to choke him out with the truncheon. The bell starts ringing, trying to convince the two men that it’s over, but they keep fighting.

Monton and Chandler’s entourage get involved, trying to pull the two men apart. Chandler and Fletcher actually succeed in dragging Doom backwards, but Monton has no such luck with Vengeance.

Freddie Datsun w/Miss Bliss vs. Eric Tyler

Datsun comes into this match pissed off and passionate, but the wild edge to his game suggests a lack of focus and Phil Vibert is quick to point out that you can’t wrestle a man like Eric Tyler unless you’re giving it 100%. Tyler takes a pounding in the opening minutes, but it becomes apparent that he’s just letting Datsun wear himself out and it isn’t long before the Traditionalist is in control. Once that happens it’s all over for Freddie – Tyler is a master of counter-holds and ring-position – and when Freddie Datsun gives into his frustration with a wild swing Eric Tyler smoothly twists his arm into position and snaps in the Tradition Lift.

Johnny Martin vs. The Insane Heat

DAVE Deathmatch for the Extreme Championship

The commentary team starts this match speculating about whether Johnny Martin made the right call in giving in to The Insane Heat’s request for a XFW-style Deathmath, but the champ quickly answers that question as the pair scramble for the weapon-strewn tables around the ring. Heat is quick to respond in kind, falling back on the puro-influenced technical and striking skills that made his name prior to joining XFW, and after both men have proved they can exist in each other’s worlds the real carnage begins. The advantage goes to Heat more often than not, Martin playing babyface in peril and giving the challenger the offense he needs to be accepted as a credible threat, but the Champ stays competitive and surprises everyone by being the first man to drag the barbed wire boards out from underneath the ring. He even raises the stakes by pulling a table into the ring and setting the board up on top of it, although he never quite manages to send Heat through and the challenger is quick to kick the combination over.

After eighteen minutes of carnage the match starts to reach its crescendo, with Martin finally getting a near-fall off a brutal assault on Heat’s knee with a snow shovel found at ringside. The Insane Heat scrambles for the ropes, acting more on instinct than any real conscious thought. His face is a crimson mask as he pulls himself upright, while Martin lines his opponent up for a finisher.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/RaulDarkness.jpg

Raul Darkness hits the ring, kendo stick in hand. Darkness swings hard at Martin’s head, knocking the champ to the mat, then half-carries The Insane Heat towards the champion for the cover. Heat’s eyes are glassy and he struggles against Raul, unsure of whether Darkness if friend or foe.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/FreddieDatsun.jpg

It takes a few seconds for Raul to get through to Heat, giving time for Freddy Datsun to roll into the ring, chair in hand. He’s still woozy from the beating he took earlier, but there’s enough fight left in the Hardcore Everyman to keep him standing. Raul Darkness’ eyes goes wide as he tries to divest himself of the Heat and mount some defense, but it's too late. Datsun spits on the former Darkness Warrior and swings hard with the chair, catching Raul across the skull. “No,” Vibert shouts on commentary. “No, how is he doing this?”

“He’s mad as hell,” Naess replies. “Freddie Datsun is mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore.”

A second shot to the head takes Raul out fo the equation for good, but the effort of it sends Datsun listing sideways to clutch at the ropes and steady himself. A few seconds later he launches himself across the ring, staggering like a drunkard, but he’s upright long enough to take down Heat with a second chair shot before rolling under the bottom rope and collapsing on the concrete.

For eight tense second both Heat and Martin are on the mat, unable to rise. Heat clambers to his feet and staggers towards the champion. Martin is up a bare second later, limping towards his opponent. The two men meet in the centre of the ring and trade punches that start weary but gradually grow in intensity. A desperate Martin tries for the discus lariat that’s ended matches in the past…Heat ducks and catches Martin in the set-up for a backdrop driver…Martin fights free, nailing Heat with a flailing elbow…Heat staggers back into the ropes, using the momentum to come in with a mafia kick…Martin ducks, pivots…Twist on the Rocks! The challenger goes down, dropped into the barbed wire board, and a weary Martin drops heavily on top of him for the three count.

Johnny Martin defeated The Insane Heat in an American Deathmatch match in 21:34 by pinfall.

Coming up at…DAVE One Wild Night in Boston

DAVE return’s to Boston’s Biker’s Paradise on Monday, Week 3 of March, with the following extreme clashes:

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/FreddieDatsun.jpg vs. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/JDMorgan.jpg

Freddie Datsun vs. JD Morgan

In their first clash JD Morgan scored a victory so convincing that DAVE management kept the two apart for fear Freddie Datsun’s arm would be snapped in two during the rematch. In January Freddie got the win back, but the clash was so close it could have gone either way. When we hit Boston the issue will be decided – one of these men will walk away the better.

The Wild Boys vs. School of Hard Knocks

The Wild Boys are fast becoming the rising stars of the DAVE Rookie squad, taking the DAVE Tag-team Champions Black Murder to the limit in their last match. In Boston they come against the seemingly unstoppable force of Chris Caulfield’s School of Hard Knocks, and Chris Caulfield promises that the Wild Boys will understand the futility of their desire to be a permanent part of the DAVE roster.

Michael Cook vs. Tayler Morton

Tayler Morton’s held a grudge against Michael Cook since debuting in DAVE, blaming his poor showing in that first match for the fact that he’s still chasing his first pinfall. After a sneak attack on our last show Cook’s elected to resolve the situation, squaring off against Morton for a rematch.

They’re two of the toughest, hardest, most extreme tag-teams on the East Coast today. The Harley-riding Wiley Coyote are intimately familiar with Boston’s Biker’s Paradise, and you can bet they don’t want to loose to the Tennessee Outlaws on their home turf.

Downward Spiral

- Video Montage -

Phil Vibert and JD Morgan are backstage at our last show. Phil has a glaze of sweat on his brow and a manic look in his eye as the fan’s chant Freddie Datsun’s name in the background. “I built this company,” Vibert says. “I bought it, lock, stock and barrel. I revolutionized pro-wrestling from the ground up. I created the unstoppable juggernaught of the East Coast War. I secured the talents of the greatest English wrestler of the last ten years. I molded champions from nothing.”

- cut - The Ontario Kings are being filmed in a gym back in Canada. Byran Holmes is skipping rope, counting beneath his breath. He’s already into the three-thousands.

Thomas Morgan steps into the camera shot: We spend four hours a day here. We work out, we train, we prepare for what’s coming. We prepare to the best, because that’s the way were trained.

- cut - Eddie Chandler is having a hissy fit in his locker room while Easy Emma tries to placate him: What do you mean he’s not here? You were the one who recommended him, Emma. You were the one who said he’d be reliable.

- cut - Freddie Datsun is sitting in his locker room, staring at a picture of his daughter instead of warming up: Tonight’s my daughter’s birthday. She’s having a party with her friends back home in Philly, and I’m here in Boston taking care of business.

- cut - Phil Vibert: I played by the book for five years. I bide my time, waiting for the moment when I took control.”

- cut - Thomas Morgan: We were taught discipline and control in the House of Stone. A wrestling match is fought in the mind before it’s fought in the ring.

- cut - Easy Emma: He says he’s not interested in coming to Boston. He says he’s not interested in anything unless it involves…him.”

Eddie Chandler: Him?

Easy Emma: You know….Vengeance.

Eddie Chandler blows his stack: What the hell does he care about Vengeance? He’s meant to be a professional. He’s meant to be my muscle. Where am I supposed to find a new partner on short notice?

- cut - Freddie Datsun: This is the third time I’ve missed her birthday in four years. My wife asked if maybe, just maybe, I could skip this show and be home with family when my little girl blows out the candles. And maybe I could if we didn’t want to give her a party, or if we were okay with having a birthday where she didn’t get presents.”

- cut – Phil Vibert: People have asked me what I have against Freddie Datsun. They keep waiting for some elaborate story about why I’m going so far to make him miserable. People seem to forget that I’m Phil-goddamn-Vibert.

- cut – Thomas Morgan: We don’t make deals with the devil. We don’t look for shortcuts. We’re the Ontario Kings. We win because there’s no other option.

- cut – Eddie Chandler and Easy Emma glare at each other, furious.

William Fletcher bursts through the door: Heeeeere’s Willie!

Eddie Chandler: No. Not him. Not after last time.

- cut – Freddie Datsun: Every minute I spend in the ring tonight is a

minute I could have spent with my little girl. There’s only one way to make that kind of sacrifice worthwhile.

The Wild Boys w/Ben Cross vs. The School of Hard Knocks

Perkins and Stephens have visibly different in-ring styles, but their short arsenal of double-team moves may be among the most impressive in DAVE’s tag ranks and they’re slowly adding new ones every match. This time around it’s a drop-toe hold/knee lift combination on the Punisher; the timing of the moves are a little off, so it’s not yet as impressive as it could be, but it’s close enough for horseshoes and the crowd pops for the display of teamwork.

Caulfield and the Punisher don’t have the fluidity of their opponents when they’re teaming, but the two men do have a surfeit of aggression and the ability to thrive amid chaos. They push the referee’s patience to the limit, trying to force things to break down, then start throwing punches that come close to scoring a knock out victory when Caulfield clocks Roy Stephens in the jaw. Even without the KO, it’s enough to put the rookie Wild Boy down, letting Caulfield pick up the three.

The School of Hard Knocks defeated The Wild Boys in 11:31 by pinfall.

Phil Vibert walks down to the ring alone, without the familiar presence of JD Morgan at his side. “For two months Thomas Morgan’s been coming out here and running his mouth about the virtues of being trained at the House of Stone dojo,” Vibert says. “He’s been running riot through *my* company with his partner Bryan Holmes, making noise about testing himself against my client JD Morgan. Two weeks ago, we put an end to that. JD Morgan pinned Thomas Morgan in the middle of the ring. And now it’s time to show my respect to the man who helped make that happen.”

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/DogFyte.jpg

Dog Fyte makes his way down to the ring. He climbs into the ring with Vibert and glares at the boss, wearing an expression that suggests he’d be perfectly happy taking Phil’s head off with a roundhouse kick.

“Dog, Dog, Dog,” Phil says, holding up a placating hand. “Dog, I know you’re pissed. I know you don’t like losing, and I know you aren’t happy about coming so close to taking the pin-fall, but we’re reasonable men Dog. We’re reasonable men, and I know you’re smart enough to listen to a good offer when it’s being made. You see, I’ve been thinking hard about what Thomas Morgan’s been saying. I’ve been thinking about what it really means to train at the House of Stone. And I think he may be right – the Stone’s are good at what they do, some of the best in the business, but it takes something more than that to make it here in Danger and Violence Extreme. We’re the new breed, Dog, and I think you’ve got what it takes. I think, with the right guidance, you can be something great.”

Vibert holds out a hand, looking slightly nervous as Dog Fyte’s nostrils flare, but eventually the Stiffest Mutha-F—ker in the game shakes. Then he holds on, pulling Vibert in close and getting into Phil’s face.

“Screw me again,” Dog Fyte snarls, “and it’s the last thing you ever do.”

Phil Vibert swallows and nods, eagerly getting away from his new client.

Panda Mask vs. Dog Fyte w/Phil Vibert

Panda Mask’s great talent lies in garnering sympathy from the audience, making them wish he’d fight back just prior to breaking out the dreaded ENDANGERED SPECIES ATTACK MODE. In many respects that makes Dog Fyte an ideal opponent for him, since there’s very little doubt that Fyte’s stiff offense hurts and the foul-mouthed Canadian’s intensity ensures that everyone believes he really wants to hurt the other man in the ring. The pair build a nice hope-spot around Dog Fyte’s Death Threat kick combo, with Panda Mask sliding under the third kick and getting a roll-up that results in a false finish, but Fyte eventually wins it courtesy of the Detonation Sequence.

Dog Fyte defeated Panda Mask in 8:23 by pinfall.

Cowboys from Hell rings out over the loudspeakers as the Tennessee Outlaws make their way to the ring. Jakki White Trash climbs into the ring while the crowd at Biker’s Paradise makes some suggestive comments about what can be done with her clothing.

“Y’all had better settle down,” she yells. “’Cause I already came in here with a coupl’a boys, and they ain’t the kind that take kindly to folks gettin’ too personable. Now I don’t wanna waste your time, so why don’t we get right down to business – Wiley Coyote! You fellas get your butts into this ring.”

Wiley Coyote vs. The Tennessee Outlaws w/ Jakki

This is a sloppy, loose brawl that spills out of the ring early and sees both teams raiding the ringside area for plunder. The Outlaws set up a table early, obviously looking for the spike piledriver they’ve used on a number of opponents, but Wiley Coyote have the slightest edge when it comes to teamwork – they mow through both Whisky Jack and Blackjack Robbins and eventually put Jakki White Trash through the table with a double backdrop when she tries to interfere. The Outlaws use the distraction that follows to jump their opponents, hammering them with a series of stiff shots, but eventually Wiley Steinway drops Blackjack Robbins with a superkick and makes the cover.

Wiley Coyote defeated The Tennessee Outlaws in 10:28 by pinfall.

It’s a limping, broken Jakki White Trash who climbs into the ring after the match, but she still carries the acoustic guitar that gets smashed across the back of Wiley Steinway’s head. She raises a microphone to her lips, a smirk playing across her face. “Outlaws! Get the tables!”

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/BlackjackRobbins.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/WhiskyJack.jpg

A few minutes later Coyote Dynamite gets put through a table with the Spike Pledriver and Jakki raises the hands of her boys. “Seems people in this company have been forgetting somethin’ important,” she says. “The Tennessee Outlaws come here to fight, and there ain’t no-one who steps into the ring with us who don’t regret it once we’re done.”

Michael Cook w/ Ben Cross vs. Tayler Morton

It’s similar to their first clash, with Michael Cook using pace to create openings where he can score the victory with a quick roll-up while Tayler Morton retaliates with a series of increasingly flashy maneuvers. The difference lies in Morton’s preparation, scouting many of Cook’s usual tricks in advance to come up with counters. The only weapon in Cook’s arsenal Morton has no answer for is the arm-bar submission, but when Cook slips it on Morton is quick to scramble for the ropes. As the math stretches out past the first five minutes the flaws in Cook’s work start to become more and more noticeable, with Morton finding a series of openings that eventually sees him catch Cook by surprise with a backslide for the three.

Tayler Morton defeated Michael Cook in 9:33 by pinfall.

The Ontario Kings vs. Picture Perfect w/Easy Emma

William Fletcher quickly fulfills the worst of Eddie Chandler’s expectations, spending the opening minutes of the match flirting with Easy Emma rather than giving his full attention to the situation in the ring. The Ontario Kings take full advantage of that distraction, with one of them always present to counter Eddie Chandler’s desperate attempts to stall or cheat. It continues to the point where everyone in the match has largely written Fletcher off, and that’s when he makes his move – ducking into the ring to catch Thomas Morgan from behind with a forearm that’s followed up by a DDT.

From there the heels manage considerably more unity, although it seems William Fletcher takes more cues from Easy Emma than he does his partner. They corner Bryan Holmes and work him over with a series of cheap tricks, often goading Thomas Morgan into the ring with their antics. Eventually Holmes gets the hot tag and things quickly devolve into chaos as referee Michael Bull looses control of the match, giving Emma ample opportunity to tip the scales in her teams favour with her interference. Holmes succeeds in catching William Fletcher with the Cyclone Shock Kick, but Eddie Chandler breaks up the pinfall and locks in the Fabulous Stretch while Easy Emma keeps Morgan from making the save.

Picture Perfect defeated The Ontario Kings in 16:40 by submission.

Freddie Datsun w/Miss Bliss vs. JD Morgan w/Phil Vibert

The match starts slowly, almost tentatively, with Datsun showing a control that was absent in his match against Tyler on our last show. Morgan tests his opponents resolve several times though – it starts with hair pulling, then an attempted low blow, and finally the British submission specialist whispers something to Datsun during a clinch that causes Freddie to explode and take several wild swings that don’t connect.

Morgan grins after that, aware that an out-of-control Datsun is easy prey, and he spends the next ten minutes working his opponent’s neck in preparation for the Cross-Atlantic Stretch while taunting Datsun to keep the hardcore everyman off-balance. It’s a plan that seems destined for success until Morgan pushes things too far and Datsun abandons any pretence of a wrestling match, firing off three quick punches into Morgan’s face before hitting a double-leg take-down and mounting Morgan to continue the assault. Referee Dewey Libertine is forced to drag Datsun, ready to call for a match stoppage finish, only to have JD Morgan come back and punish Datsun with a series of stiff European Uppercuts.

From there the match is basically shoot fight that keeps threatening to devolve into a bar room brawl, skirting the borders of even DAVE’s relaxed approach to the rules. Considerable leeway is given to both men under Vibert’s orders as they manage to exhibit much of the intensity and violence of a hardcore match without using a single weapon or going to ringside once, and when Datsun finally looks like he’s going to get his revenge on Morgan…

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/DogFyte.jpg

…Dog Fyte charges the ring. The Stiffest Mutha-F—ker in the game is in his element with an out of control Datsun, trading stiff punches that threaten to dislocate someone’s jaw. Morgan and Fyte start double-teaming Datsun, with Morgan eventually locking in the Cross-Atlantic Stretch while Fyte prepares to blast a series of kicks into Morgan’s skull.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/ThomasMorgan.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/BryanHolmes.jpg

Then the Ontario Kings get involved in the chaos. Thomas Morgan comes in under the bottom rope, grabbing Dog Fyte from behind and hitting a quick backbreaker. Bryan Holmes takes the opposite route, launching himself over the top rope to catch JD Morgan with a big splash. Things deteriorate fast with all five men fighting I the ring, ignoring Libertine’s attempts at control, and eventually Phil Vibert climbs into the ring and interjects himself, blasting Datsun across the face with the brick-like mobile phone Phil carries in his managerial persona to have the match thrown out for good as a double-stoppage finish due to lack of control.

Freddie Datsun drew with JD Morgan in 25:39 when the referee lost control and stopped the match.

Chaos reigns in the ring despite Libertine calling for the bell, but it comes to a stunned halt when Freddie Datsun smashes a fist into Phil Vibert’s face in revenge for the phone shot.

http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/FreddieDatsun.jpghttp://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x15/arwink/PhilVibert.jpg

There’s a momentary pause when Datsun realizes what he’s done – Vibert has been assaulted before in his managerial role, but not since he’s been acknowledged as the owner of DAVE – and then the Hardcore Everyman seems to decide that he may as well go all in and unleashes hell on Vibert, wailing on him with all the rage that’s been building over the last few months.

The other wrestlers in the ring immediately rush to separate the two, with the unlikely duo of Ben Cross and Panda Mask emerging from the backstage curtain to help control the increasingly irate Datsun. Vibert can barely stand after the barrage of abuse he’s taken at Datsun’s hands, getting spirited backstage by his clients Morgan and Dog Fyte, while the fans show their approval for an angry Freddie Datsun and demand that the company let Freddie and Phil fight on.

Some post-show thoughts

- Welcome aboard Jaded and Sonfaro, and thanks for the comments on the last show or two.

- Tried something different with the pre-show montage, but I'm not sure I'm a fan of how it worked out. I suspect it may need to be kept to talking heads as much as possible in the future.

- Putting JD Morgan and Thomas Morgan into the same program doesn't make things easy when writing up matches.
