NWA WORLDWIDE*

Saturday Week 2 October 1989

Ron Simmons vs. Steve Austin

Kinda wish it'd be the other way around, but Simmons is in a high profile feud with the Steiners, while Austin is gonna be looking up at the lights.

The Varsity Club vs. Dynamic Dudes

While Douglas could be pushed as something, the Club are gonna take this one.

The Great Muta vs. Bobby Eaton

This one makes me sad :(

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 2 October 1989

Ole Anderson vs. Barry Windham

Could really go either way here but after the turn, Ole's gonna ride that momentum into a match with maybe Steamboat.

The Skyscrapers and Norman The Lunatic vs. Flyin' Brian, Z-Man and Steve Austin

Another unfortunate one, its 1989, where huge monsters in a major storyline will beat small non-feuding guys in a landslide.

NWA World Television Title Tournament Finals: Cactus Jack vs. 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert

Go Cactus!!

Lex Luger vs. Scott Steiner

Luger is main event, Steiner is upper card level. It might not be the cleanest of wins, but it'll be a win.

NWA United States Title Match: Ricky Steamboat defends vs. 'Cowboy' Bob Orton

Will be a good little match and all, but the Cowboy is on JTTS duty here.

Saturday Week 2 October 1989

Ron Simmons vs. Steve Austin

Austin is jobber right now

The Varsity Club vs. Dynamic Dudes

Uhmm this is pretty much a coin flip for me

The Great Muta vs. Bobby Eaton

Muta is in storyline so he picks up a win.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 2 October 1989

Ole Anderson vs. Barry Windham

Ole would be more logical choice since he just turned but I´m not convinced on him yet so lets say that Barry wins after Sting interfere.

The Skyscrapers and Norman The Lunatic vs. Flyin' Brian, Z-Man and Steve Austin

Bigger guys take the win here as Austin looks like the weak link here.

NWA World Television Title Tournament Finals: Cactus Jack vs. 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert

Coin flip but I think that Gilbert winning would give better reason to continue this feud.

Lex Luger vs. Scott Steiner

Luger needs the win more

NWA United States Title Match: Ricky Steamboat defends vs. 'Cowboy' Bob Orton

Orton is JTTS so Ricky retains

Ron Simmons vs. Steve Austin

Austin will be doing these jobs for a little while, but with this constant exposure, it won't be too long before he's ready for the tag ranks.

The Varsity Club vs. Dynamic Dudes

I never bought into Shane Douglas (not an ECW fan), but even still, the Dynamic Dudes are jobbers, plain and simple.

The Great Muta vs. Bobby Eaton

I've been surprised how little ring time Muta has gotten so far. He's just too good to keep in the locker room.

Ole Anderson vs. Barry Windham

Barry Windham came in with a great angle, but has not gotten anything going, so far. With Ole just turning, and getting some high-profile work, he's the hot commodity, at the moment.

The Skyscrapers and Norman The Lunatic vs. Flyin' Brian, Z-Man and Steve Austin

A clever way to seed the eventual Hollywood Blondes. This is a nice way to organically introduce them as partners. I'm strangely interested in seeing a Zed-Man heel turn.

NWA World Television Title Tournament Finals: Cactus Jack vs. 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert

I'm surprising myself with this pick, but this show just seems too heel-heavy for this to go any other way. Besides, Cactus Jack has far more upward mobility than Gilbert. I could definitely see him moving up to give Steamboat a run.

Lex Luger vs. Scott Steiner

Woman's new masked fellow won't be doing Steiner any favours in this one. More than that, though, it's time to give the Total Package some juice, so he can push up into a World Title program.

NWA United States Title Match: Ricky Steamboat defends vs. 'Cowboy' Bob Orton

Unless he's been marked for early retirement, Bob orton has a surprising amount still in the tank. In my short-lived NWA game, Cowboy was the guy that took the TV Title from Sting. All that said, Steamboat's the guy to carry the US strap for quite some time.

We saw Steamboat earlier tonight when he stepped in to help break up the fight between Sting and Ole Anderson. The two men met in the center of the ring and the beginning of the match had Steamboat focusing on the arm of Orton. He took him down with several armdrags and then locked in a tight armbar. Within the next few minutes, Steamboat focused in with tight armbars and hip tosses/armdrags into those armbars. Orton pulled Steamboat up using his free arm. He backed Steamboat into a corner. The referee Tommy Young had to step in and bring out the break but Orton got in a few cheap shots while Young was seperating the two. Really hasn't been much of the Birds floating around, has there? They've got the little tift going with Brian and Zenk, but that's even a B-story compared to dissention with those two. Really, might as well just job the tag belts over to the Midnights so that the belts are in a feud. And so that I'm all happy and stuff about where the Tag belts are at <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

Samoan Swat Team vs. Rock 'N' Roll Express

The Samoans are still kickin' around as a lower team, at this point. The R&Rs have a shot at unseating the Freebirds, especially with the Midnight Express on board.

Scott Hall vs. Jason Knight

Norman The Lunatic vs. Ranger Ross

Nitron vs. Flyin' Brian

What's a B-Show without some random squashes?

Buzz Sawyer vs. 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert

Gilbert's got an impending TV Title rematch, while Buzz is basically off the radar, at this point. That's a shame, as he's still got some decent skills. Anyway, this should help up Eddie's game.

The Great Muta vs. Ranger Ross

RR is about to get some R&R, after a nice little misting.

The Skyscrapers vs. Flyin' Brian and Steve Austin

Why beat around the bush with the Hollywood Blondes, eh? I'm with you. Zed-Man makes a heel turn official. I'm strangely interested in a Zed-Man/Scott Hall pairing.

Non Title: Scott Hall vs. Ric Flair

Speaking of 'Magnum' Scott Hall... This should be a fairly competitive squash.

Terry Funk vs. Jason Knight

This, however, won't.

'Cowboy' Bob Orton and Dick Murdoch vs. Road Warriors

Two dirty brawlers against two flashy wrecking machines. Going with the Road Warriors, as they remain the cornerstones of the Tag division.

Non Title: The Fabulous Freebirds vs. Sting and Ricky Steamboat

I love my some Freebirds, but they can't touch the Dragon Stingers.

the only question I have is how many times will Funk hit him with the branding iron :)

[Hello everyone and welcome to NWA's World Championship Wrestling! Jim Ross alongside James E. Cornette and what a show we have for you in front of 15,000 fans! As the cameras pan around the crowd, boos erupt from one corner at first and then spread through the arena as Ole Anderson walks out. Ole ignores the boos from the crowd, obviously coming after his attacks on Sting and Ricky Steamboat. He steps inside the ring with a microphone in hand.]

Ole Anderson

"You know, I have always been a direct man. When I get on this microphone you can take me at my word. So I am going to be direct tonight. I really don't give a damn what any of you think about me. I don't care what you think or you or you or you or any of you. I am going to do what I am going to do. I am a Horseman and the only person right now that I give a damn about is the NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair. Him and my partners in crime that are trapped within a contract with another promotion up north. I'll let you guess on who those men are."

[Ole flashes the IV Horsemen symbol. Could he be meaning Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard?]

Ole Anderson

"But I didn't come out here to talk about those men tonight. I came out here because last week I made a statement. I made a statement by kicking in the teeth of the NWA United States Champion Ricky Steamboat. Yeah, you guys like him, don't you? Well, don't worry, he won't be holding onto that belt for too long. At Halloween Havoc it has been signed where I will be facing him for that belt and you better believe that it's going to come home to the Horsemen where it belongs. But I didn't even come out here to talk about that Bruce Lee wannabe Ricky Steamboat. I came out here tonight to talk about the man you fans call your hero: Sting. Sting, you and I have not seen eye to eye inside the ring or out of it since forever. I don't think you're good enough to be a Horseman. I don't think you're good enough to lace my boots or to lace Ric Flair's boots. Sting, you care far too much about what these idiots out here think about you. Most Popular Wrestler? Popularity gets you broken necks. Just ask Bruno Sammartino. I would say all of this to your face but everyone in this building knows that you are too much of a coward to..."

[Ole gets interrupted by the sound of Sting's music! Ole smirks in the ring and moves over to a corner, leaning against it as the music plays. He keeps his eyes trained on the entrance as pyros explode within that entrance and a figure is shown standing within street clothes but with his face painted.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting4.jpg

[it's Sting! Sting is in the building and later on tonight he will team with Ricky Steamboat to face The Fabulous Freebirds! Sting pauses at the top of the entrance and releases an 'OOOWWWW' to the crowd! The crowd responds and Sting begins walking down toward the ring. Out from the crowd, a leg swings forward and catches Sting in the chest, staggering him!]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/greatmuta.jpg

[it's The Great Muta! Muta sends that asian mist into the eyes of Sting, blinding him! Sting tries to rub it out of his eyes as Muta catches him with a few more kicks. A roundhouse kick to the head brings Sting down to the floor. The crowd boos as Muta stomps on Sting. Inside the ring, Ole Anderson is smiling and laughing at what just happened! Is he really working with the J-Tex Corporation on this?]

Match #1

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/greatmuta.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/rangerross.jpg

The Great Muta vs. Ranger Ross

[During his time within the armed forces, Ranger Ross never quite saw anything like his opponent this evening. The Great Muta was riding a high after the attack on Sting a few minutes earlier and he dominated the armed forces ranger. He took him out with some swift kicks early on, taunted the crowd and headed to the top turnbuckle -- Moonsault Press! Muta turned it into a pinfall: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: The Great Muta (Via Pinfall @ 6:54)

Match Rating: C+

[Jim Ross and James E. Cornette reminded everyone that our main event tonight is a non title bout. It features the NWA World Tag Team Champions The Fabulous Freebirds taking on Sting and Ricky Steamboat! But what kind of shape will Sting be in after the assault earlier tonight by The Great Muta?]

[We head backstage where Ric Flair seems to be just arriving to the building. He has a duffel bag in his right hand presumably with his ring gear in it. He walks down a hallway where he is approached by legendary announcer Gordon Solie.]

Gordon Solie

"Ric, Ric! Did you see what happened earlier? Do you have any comment on it?"

Ric Flair

"I was in the limousine with the ladies, Gordon. What did I miss?"

Gordon Solie

"Sting was set up by Ole Anderson and then attacked by The Great Muta."

[Ric gets a look on his face and shoves by Gordon Solie, looking very angry right now as he heads down the hallway. We head back to the ring for our next match.]

The Skyscrapers vs. Flyin' Brian and Steve Austin

[An extremely short match this evening between the two tag teams as The Skyscrapers were clearly the dominant duo here. Conspicuous by his absence is Z-Man, Flyin' Brian's normal tag team partner. The two of them will be getting the shot at Halloween Havoc against The Fabulous Freebirds. Austin was the man who took the brunt of the punishment in this match and he was finished off with a Double Powerbomb and Sid Vicious made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: The Skyscrapers (Via Pinfall @ 2:50)

Match Rating: C

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/animal3.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/hawk3.jpg

[As the bell sounded, 'Iron Man' began to play and out came the Road Warriors! Hawk and Animal hit the ring and went right after Sid and Dan! The brawl was on with Theodore R. Long trying to step in and give his team the advantage but he was just knocked back by Animal! All four men brawled right up and out through the curtain!]

[We headed backstage and that is where we see Ric Flair and Ole Anderson going nose-to-nose! A shoving match begins between the two friends but before any punches are thrown it's broken up by other wrestlers. Barry Windham steps in and tells Ric that he needs to go get in the ring for his match tonight because it's next!]

Non Title

Scott Hall vs. Ric Flair

[A fairly competitive match here as Ric Flair seemed to have his thoughts on other things like what happened with Ole Anderson just a few moments ago. Hall dropped Flair with a bicycle kick and got a two count, much to the surprise of the fans who were really rooting for The Nature Boy. Hall got Flair set up for the Crucifix Power Bomb but Flair wiggled out and managed to roll Hall into a Small Package: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Ric Flair (Via Pinfall @ 6:42)

Match Rating: B

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpg

[but Flair's night in the ring wasn't done as the man who will challenge him for the NWA World Heavyweight title at Halloween Havoc in an 'I Quit' match came running down with a branding iron in hand! Terry Funk entered the ring and cracked Flair's skull with the branding iron! Flair dropped to the mat holding his head and Funk began putting the boots to the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Funk grabbed one of the legs -- Funk Spinning Toe Hold! The crowd booed! But once again Terry Funk leaves Ric Flair laying on the mat. Will he do the same at Halloween Havoc?]

[We head backstage to a locker room where Z-Man is actually in the building here tonight. As a matter of fact he is shown having an argument with Flyin' Brian.]

Z-Man

"What did you think that you were doing out there, Brian? Teaming with some other guy when you and I have a shot at the NWA World Tag Team titles at Halloween Havoc?"

Flyin' Brian

"I was doing a favor for a friend. That's all."

Z-Man

"You could have been hurt out there by those Skyscrapers. Then where would our title shot be?"

[Flyin' Brian just looks at him for a moment and then shakes his head, turning and walking away.]

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/jasonknight.jpg

Terry Funk vs. Jason Knight

[Jason Knight was definitely no match for the veteran Terry Funk. These two did not show any chemistry between each other. In fact, the match seemed worse than what they normally put out with others. Luckily, it was a pretty short match that ended with Terry Funk locking on the Funk Spinning Toe Hold and Jason Knight giving up.]

Winner: Terry Funk (Via Submission @ 3:28)

Match Rating: C-

[Funk held the hold on for about a minute after the sounding of the bell and then released, kicking Jason Knight out of the ring. Gary Hart entered the ring and handed Terry Funk a microphone.]

Terry Funk

"Ric Flair, you better be focused on ME from here on out. I don't care what your friends do. I don't care what anyone else has to say, you yellow bastard. At Halloween Havoc I will be taking the NWA World Heavyweight title from around your waist and bringing it right here where it belongs. Why? Because it's a Funk Family Tradition."

[Terry drops the microphone and walks off alongside Gary Hart.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/boborton.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/barrywindham2.jpg

[We head backstage once again as has become the custom here on World Championship Wrestling. This time it's for a slugfest between Bob Orton and Barry Windham! The two men are exchanging punches back and forth with neither man backing down! Orton kicks Windham in the gut and then slams him against the wall! Several wrestlers finally come in to break things up but the real question is what exactly caused these two second generation wrestlers to fight backstage?]

Match #5

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/boborton.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/dickmurdoch.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/animal3.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/hawk3.jpg

'Cowboy' Bob Orton and Dick Murdoch vs. Road Warriors

[Orton and Murdoch came out to the ring first to boos from the crowd. Then 'Iron Man' hit and the crowd popped onto their feet with cheers! Road Warriors Hawk and Animal came running down to the ring and slid inside. They went right after Orton and Murdoch! The bell sounded as Hawk and Animal clubbed Orton and Murdoch with forearm shots. Orton fell out of the ring and Animal sent Murdoch to the ropes -- double shoulderblock! Hawk left the ring and Animal showed his strength as he picked up Murdoch in a military press and then dropped him unceremoniously to the mat! Animal pounded his chest to cheers from the crowd! He tagged out to Hawk and Hawk came in. Animal sent Murdoch to the ropes -- Murdoch made the tag to Bob Orton, Jr. -- Murdoch leaped over a fallen Animal -- clothesline by Hawk! Murdoch goes to the mat but Orton catches Hawk in the knee with a shoulder!]

[Orton grabbed Hawk and brought him across his knee with a backbreaker. The crowd boos as Orton raises a fist and then brings it down across the head of Road Warrior Hawk. Orton picks up Hawk -- swinging neckbreaker! He makes a cover: 1 -- 2 -- Power Kickout by Hawk! Orton pulls Hawk to his feet and throws some punches. He sends Hawk into the corner and follows him in -- corner clothesline -- MISSED! Hawk moved out of the way! He leaps over and tags in Animal! Animal comes in with a clothesline for Orton! He turns on Murdoch and takes him off the apron with a big forearm shot! He grabs Orton and sends him to the ropes -- Scoop Powerslam! Animal looks to the corner where Hawk is recovering and makes the thumbs up signal! He picks up Orton and raises him on his shoulders. Hawk climbs the turnbuckles -- DOOMSDAY DEVICE! What a move! Animal makes the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: Road Warriors (Via Pinfall @ 9:54)

Non Title

The Fabulous Freebirds vs. Sting and Ricky Steamboat

[Our main event match where we have three men who hold gold: The NWA World Tag Team Champions The Fabulous Freebirds from Badstreet U.S.A. and the NWA United States Champion Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat. Steamboat's partner, though, is no stranger to gold. He is a former NWA World Television Champion. He is the man they call Sting. Sting did not look too great when he came down to the ring with Ricky Steamboat. He was assaulted earlier this evening by The Great Muta. But he's here and he stands within the corner as the match gets started between Ricky Steamboat and Michael 'P.S.' Hayes. Steamboat starts the match off strong with a few armdrags on Hayes. He turns the last one into an armbar and Hayes moves quickly to the ropes to get the break. He turns to referee Tommy Young complaining that Steamboat grabbed him by the hair. Tommy Young warns Steamboat, giving Hayes a chance to cheapshot the NWA United States Champion. Hayes backs Steamboat into the Freebird corner and tags out to Gorgeous Jimmy 'Jam' Garvin. The two work over Steamboat with punches in the corner before Hayes is forced to exit the ring.]

[Garvin maintains the advantage for the next few minutes for the Freebirds. Garvin tagged out to Hayes and the two of them used quick tags and double team moves on Steamboat to keep the United States Champion down. Sting was just begging for a tag. He was reaching but the Freebirds kept Steamboat just enough away so he couldn't reach the hand of the Stinger. Hayes locked on a front facelock and Steamboat tried to push him back toward the corner. As they drew closer, Jimmy Garvin came in and got the attention of the referee. Ricky Steamboat made the tag! In comes Sting! But referee Tommy Young intercedes! He never saw the tag made! Hayes pulls Steamboat back over to the Freebird corner and Hayes and Garvin choke Steamboat on the middle rope. Garvin holds Steamboat down and Hayes jumps on his back, really choking him on that middle rope! Hayes releases as the referee turns around and he picks up Steamboat. He puts Steamboat on his shoulder and runs toward the corner -- Steamboat slithers out right in the nick of time! Hayes hits chest-first into the corner and then bangs heads with The Dragon! Both men go down to the mat and the referee begins the ten count as boos begin to come through the crowd.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/oleanderson.jpg

[Ole Anderson walks out from the back! He is walking right down toward the ring but Sting doesn't see him and neither does Steamboat! Hayes manages to make the tag to Garvin and Steamboat tags in Sting! Sting comes in, clotheslining down both Freebirds! He takes down Hayes with a body slam and then a dropkick to Garvin! Ole Anderson grabs Steamboat off the apron and sends him crashing against the steel barricade! Meanwhile in the ring Sting sends Jimmy Garvin into the turnbuckle and then runs and leaps -- Stinger Splash! Garvin staggers and then falls to the mat. Sting grabs him by the legs -- Scorpion Deathlock! He locks his finisher on Garvin as Ole Anderson stomps a mudhole in Ricky Steamboat outside the ring! Garvin has no choice but to give it up!]

Winners: Sting and Ricky Steamboat (Via Submission @ 17:45)

Match Rating: A

[sting releases the hold and looks around, obviously looking for his partner. He sees Steamboat down and Ole Anderson there with him! Sting slides underneath the bottom rope and comes over to make the save for Steamboat but Ole jumps the barricade and heads through the crowd. Sting checks on his partner and we're out of time! We'll see you next week!]

AD, I love the diary. Reading the arena results takes me back to my teenage years...geez, I spent entirely too much money on PWI & The Wrestler. :)

I was mostly a PWI guy rather than any other magazine. Though I did occassionally pick up The Wrestler. But, yeah, that's exactly what the Arena Reports are supposed to bring back within the reader's mind so I'm glad they are having that effect. Had to come up with an interesting way to spread information that would still fit the 1989 timeline. lol.

Didn't I have a perfect score on this one too?

NWA WORLDWIDE*

Saturday Week 4 October 1989

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Scott Steiner

Pretty tough one to call, but Steiner seems like the more upside of the two.

Buzz Sawyer vs. Flyin' Brian

Push Brian!

Midnight Express vs. Dynamic Dudes

This match will be the awesome! An MX squash is always fun! That's why you should book more of them!

Dick Murdoch vs. Sting

Damn, a nice random appearance on Worldwide of Stinger? Huge show!

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 4 October 1989

Cactus Jack vs. Steve Austin

I'm sure Austin is gaining some slight popularity through the matches he's been in, but Cactus is going for the TV title. Momentum rawks.

Mike Rotundo vs. Z-Man

Unfortunate that Rotundo really has nothing going on, while Zenk has the Tag title match coming up.

Samoan Swat Team vs. The Steiners

Not quite as unfortunate as Rotundo that the SST have nothing going on. Maybe could put them on a C-show level program with the Dudes? The feud could start because the Dudes were surfing on a Samoan beach and the SST found out that they were on sacred Tribal burial grounds! Unless that's too Russo for ya... >_>

Lex Luger vs. 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert

This one could kill my score, but even with Gilbert having that TV title feud going with Cactus, Lex just needs some momentum or he's going to flounder. He already is floundering, given that Ole kinda stepped in and stole his US title match.

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Sting

Really tough to call, but I'm figuring this can give the heels a strong showing before Havoc.
