A slight new look to NCAA D1

Recommended Posts

It was announced after the 2000 season that the Summit League, the MAC, and the America East Conference are all leaving division 1. Taking their places are the Greater Wichita Athletic League, the Kansas College Athletic Conference, and the Mid-Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The KCAC was a former NAIA league, but with great success in NAIA, they will be filling the void left by the the Summit League. The MIAA will be taking the place of the MAC, and the GWAL will be taking the place of America East.

I decided that I wanted some extra Kansas schools in the mix, so I added 2 college conferences from Kansas in the KCAC and MIAA. Also, I added the GWAL, which is actually a high school league here in Kansas. I am using all 4 tournaments, and I may bump the postseason NIT back to 40 teams. Right now I'm keeping it at 32. Players must stay 2 years in college but can go pro after their sophomore year. Human coaches (of which there will be none until 2010, and then just 1 after that) can be fired and take job offers. And since I will be fast simming the first 10 years of this dynasty, I have turned conference prestige changes on, but did not randomize team prestige. I am interested to see if any of the power conferences drop in prestige after 10 years, and if any mid-major conferences (possibly one of the 3 new conferences) turn into a power conference.

I do not plan on reporting on any specific conferences or teams during the quick sim, but I am noting the prestige of all the conferences before the quicksim, and I will do so afterwards as well. Hope you all enjoy.

The quicksim has been completed, and we are up to the offseason of 2010. 13 conferences had a change in prestige, and here they are:

Horizon dropped from prestige 4 to prestige 2.

MVC dropped from 4 to 3

Mountain West increased from 4 to 5.

WAC dropped from 4 to 2

CAA increased from 3 to 4

KCAC dropped from 3 to 2.

MAAC increased from 2 to 3.

WCC dropped from 3 to 2.

Big Sky dropped from 2 to 1.

Big West increased from 2 to 3.

GWAL increased from 2 to 3.

Ohio Valley dropped from 2 to 1.

Patriot increased from 1 to 2.

7 conferences dropped in prestige and 6 confrences raised in prestige. The biggest drops were Horizon and WAC who dropped 2 prestige levels. No team increased more than 1 prestige level. As we get ready to start the 2010 season, lets take a look at all 33 conferences and their prestige levels.

Of the 3 new conferences (GWAL, KCAC, MIAA), the GWAL and MIAA have had good success, while the KCAC has been shut out. The GWAL has won 3 postseason tourneys, all CIT wins. The MIAA also has 3 postseason tourney wins. 2 of those are CIT wins, and 1 CIT win. The best that the KCAC has been able to do was when Ottawa made it to the third round of the NIT. The GWAL is going to be the conference that I focus on, because I will be taking over my alma mater Wichita West.

Schaplowsky named head coach at Wichita West

Wichita West announced today that 30 year old Mike Schaplowsky has been hired as the new head coach. Schaplowsky played at Wichita West when it was still a high school league, but the GWAL has since been bumped up to the NCAA. After graduating from Wichita West, Schaplowsky declined to play college ball, instead focusing on coaching. He has coached in youth leagues, middle schools, and private high schools so far. This is his first shot at the NCAA. "I'm looking forward to it. I've been looking to come back to Wichita West for a while now, and I'm excited for the possibilities." Schaplowsky begins his duties immediately, starting with recruiting in the offseason.

Dynasty Notes

I will be leaving conference prestige change on. I thought about having conference movement, but I want the GWAL to eventually get to level 4, possibly even 5. I will be staying at Wichita West for a long time, not planning on accepting any job offers. I will be focusing more on the GWAL as a whole by reporting on all preseason tournament games involving GWAL teams, as well as regular season conference games and all postseason games involving GWAL teams. I hope you all enjoy. As far as Wichita West, I will be playing out and coaching most games, if not all. I expect this to be a slow moving dynasty with me playing out all the games. I'd like to get 30 seasons or so into it, but we will see. Enjoy!

It's been 2 years now since Wichita West won the CIT title, 2 years without postseason play, and I'm looking to change that. I plan on recruiting the best guys I can find in the Midwest, but I won't hesitate to go overseas to get guys to come to Wichita. Something else I forgot to mention in my last post, I'm going back to a format that I really liked that I used once at the fbbgames boards. It will be more of a newspaper type article wrap-up of the game, then after that I will give my coaches analysis. I will do this for many things, not just games. For roster and schedules, awards, and what not. My immediate goal this year is just to get Wichita West back to the postseason. Any of the 4 tournaments is fine. The AD has made it clear we should be in the NCAA tournament this year.

2010-2011 Pioneer Season Preview

The season kicks off tonight for new Wichita West coach Mike Schaplowsky, and he will be starting the season with 11 active players. Earlier in the week, starting center Rene Leclaire was academically suspended for the semester. The Pioneers are young, very young. They have 1 senior on the roster. Coach Schaplowsky will be relying on point guard Erick Register for key minutes and key points, as he is the lone returning starter. Let's take a look at the roster.

Preseason and Midseason Tournaments for GWAL Teams

We know that Wichita West is going to the Coaches Invitational as the 14th seed. Also in this tournament are the following teams: UCLA, Duke, Oklahoma State, Louisville, Dayton, Ohio State, Iona, Arkansas, Indiana State, George Mason, Green Bay, Marshall, Pacific, Kansas Wesleyan, and Campbell.

Wichita East is in the 16 team Las Vegas Invitational as the 13th seed. They will take on 4th seeded Wake Forest in their first game.

Wichita Northwest is in the 4 team Vision Classic as the #2 seed. They will take on #3 seed Harvard in the first round.

Those are the only 3 GWAL teams that are in a preseason tournament this year. We'll have updates on all of them as they arise.

Pioneers no match for Oklahoma St., lose handily in season opener

When Wichita West took a 16-15 lead late in the first half, Pioneer head coach Mike Schaplowsky had a smile on his face, thinking his team could hang with Big Twelve power Oklahoma St. That smile quickly turned into a frown, and then a grimace, as the Cowboys outscored Wichita West 72-29 the rest of the way, rolling to an 87-45 victory in the first round of the Coaches Invitational. Oklahoma State shot 55.6% from the field, and forced 16 turnovers defensively, as Wichita West struggled on both ends of the floor. Nolan Hafner was the only Pioneer in double figures, as he had 12. All 5starters for Oklahoma State were in double figures, led by Willy Cornwell with 21. The Pioneers will be off for the next 11 days, and their next game will be at Portland State on the 18th of November.

Coach Analysis:

Well it looked promising early, then they wore us down. Let's be honest, this team is not the most fit team I have ever coached. Not to mentioned it was the first college action for a lot of guys. I did make a dumb mistake switching to the matchup zone and sticking with it in the second half. But by then we were already down 22. We just need to play defense better. I'm going to have to recruit guys that can lock down on defense. This type of performance is not one that I want to see again.

Pioneers let big lead slip away in road loss

Things looked good early on for Wichita West, as they took a 52-40 lead into the locker room at half time, then Roman LaMond got an easy layup to begin the second half. Then Portland State's Valentine West took over, draining 4 three pointers in route to a game high 18 points. Slowly that 14 point lead began to slip, and by the time it was all said and done, the Pioneers had lost 77-71 in a dismal second half effort in which they scored just 19 points. Erick Register, who had 13 points at halftime, was shut down in the second half, and finished with only 15 for Wichita West. So head coach Mike Schaplowsky is still looking for his first win, as are the Pioneers for this season. They'll get their next chance on November 22nd as they travel to Central Arkansas.

Coaches Analysis:

Damn we have to get better defensively, or it's going to be a very long season. There's no excuse for letting them shoot better than 60% for the game. And what the heck happened to our offense? We scored 52 points in the first half and can only muster up 19 in the second half? It's not like we had a bunch of turnovers, I mean we only had 10 turnovers. We need to get better, and fast, or some serious changes are going to be made.

Pioneers continue to struggle, lose third in a row to start the season.

Wichita West is showing signs of improvement, unfortunately, the last 2 games have been against teams that the Pioneers would normally handle. Central Arkansas jumped out to a 39-30 lead at halftime, thanks to hot shooting by Richard Burns and Kenny Paladino who each finished with 19. The Pioneers, after taking good care of the ball against Portland State, were bothered by the defensive pressure of Central Arkansas. West had 18 turnovers, 8 of them coming off steals. So the Pioneers have lost 7 in a row going back to last season, and are definitely struggling the most they ever have since joining the NCAA. Their next chance to break the losing streak comes on Nov. 25th at UAB.

OK, obviously the next couple years are going to be rebuilding years, especially since we have only 1 new player coming in next year. It seems like we were slightly better defensively, but still, Central Arkansas shot 50%. That's not going to cut it. I'm hoping that these players become better next year defensively. 18 turnovers certainly didn't help us either. I liked Roman Lafond coming off the bench to give us a lift. Unfortunately he'll have to stay on the bench for now because he does better in that position. I know that we are close to picking up that first win, I can feel it.

Poor shooting costs Pioneers in big loss

Looking at the final score, you would not believe that Wichita West had a 10 point lead in the first half. Everything was clicking. Defensively the Pioneers were having their best game of the season, and offensively they couldn't miss. That all changed in the second half, as Wichita West couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, and they sure stopped playing defense. It cost Wichita West a 62-40 loss to UAB. The Pioneers were just 1 of 11 from three point land, and only shot 50% from the line and 36.4% from the field overall. So the losing streak continues for a once proud Wichita West program which is the only GWAL school that hasn't won a game to this point. Their next shot will be the 28th, as they finally get to play a home game vs. Iona.

I think this team has stamina issues, as we always seem to fall apart in the second half. I know that this team has the ability to be special. We hung for 15 minutes with Oklahoma State, and we hung for a half with UAB. We just need to put the pieces together and play a complete game. I'm staying positive, because I have been told that no matter what I won't be terminated for the first 3 years. I'll be given every chance to turn this thing around, which I fully intended to. Let's be honest, we may never compete with the power conferences, but there is no reason why Wichita West shouldn't be playing in one of the 4 postseason tournaments 8 out of every 10years.

Cruz's double-double leads Pioneers to first victory

Wichita West finally has their first win of the season, and head coach Mike Schaplowsky finally has his first win as a collegiate head coach. It took all 40minutes to get it done, and the Pioneers had to overcome a 9 point deficit, but they got a huge 56-52 win. Johnny Cruz put the team on his shoulders tonight, scoring 14 points and pulling down 13 boards in a chippy game in which 3 technical fouls were called. Charlie Campagna had the first one for Wichita West, and Iona players picked up the other 2. The Pioneers survived despite turning the ball over 16 times. And while they didn't cause a lot of turnovers defensively, they held Iona to only 31.5% shooting. So Wichita West ends the month of November on a good note, and they have a week off before hosting LaSalle in what will be the second of 7straight home games.

Coaches Analysis:

I really thought we were heading for our 5th straight loss, but Johnny was huge for us tonight. He gave us exactly what we needed, and showed why he needs to be a starter on this team. I'm not happy with the 16 turnovers, especially since many of them were unforced. I am very pleased that defensively this team seems to be getting better. We have 6 more games in a row at home, and hopefully we can win the majority of them.

Defensive change leads to second win of season

Wichita West coach Mike Schaplowsky knew he had to make a change. LaSalle had 37 points and halftime and were finding holes in the 2-3 zone that the Pioneers were running. So to start the second half, Wichita West went to their patented man to man defense, and it paid dividends. The Pioneers held LaSalle to just 16% shooting in the second half and 32.3% for the game, and slowly picked away at a double digit LaSalle lead. The final result: another hard fought victory for the Pioneers, 61-59. 3 players scored in double figures for the Pioneers, led by Jonathan Leary with 19. Erick Register had 11 and Johnny Cruz had 14. The Pioneers seem to be at their best when they play their hard nosed man defense, and they seem to be hitting their stride offensively as well. Next up for Wichita West is a game against Lafayette.

Coaches Analysis:

No doubt about it, we are a man to man team, and we are going to have to rely on man to man defense this season. Unfortunately it leads to more tired players, but I have a bench 11 deep, and I think all of them can contribute. This next game against Lafayette scares me, since they have already beaten Georgetown this season. Then again, the Hoyas appear to be down. It's nice to see guys like Cruz and Leary having consistent seasons so far. This 7 game home stretch is very important, and it would be great to hit the road with a 7 game winning streak.

Shorthanded Pioneers still able to beat Lafayette

Things were in disarray for Wichita West before this game, as backup players Ramon Lafond and Jeremias Restal were suspended for tonights game for a violation of team rules, and starters Nolan Hafner and Johnathan Leary only played 7 and 8 minutes respectively. But Lindsey Quirk scored 19 off the bench, while little used Brian Zorn added 9, and the Pioneers were able to pull of a 68-63 victory against a good Lafayette squad. Defensively the Pioneers forced 14 turnovers, but Lafayette was able to stay in the game by shooting 43.1% from the field. So the Pioneers have now won 3 in a row and look to continue this streak when they take on Hampton on the 14th.

This game didn't turn out the way I wanted it to because I accidently hit sim game instead of coach game, so this game was coached by the AI, which is the reason for the suspension story. When it came up as a win I decided to leave it as is

Pioneers lose 2 starters due to injury

Well we've found out the reason that Nolan Hafner and Jonathan Leary didn't play much against Lafayette. Both suffered injuries during the game. Fortunately, the injury to Hafner isn't too serious, and he will only miss 2 weeks. Leary wasn't so lucky, however, as he suffered a broken ankle and will miss 2-3 months. Wichita West will have to regroup after this dose of bad news.

Pioneers fall apart in second half

For about a 4 minute stretch beginning in the first half and ending in the second half, Hampton outscored Wichita West 20-2 to turn a 4 point deficit into a 47-33 lead. Wichita West could never recover, as the defense let them down. Hampton shot 53.7% as they rolled to a 79-62 win. The Pioneers looked tired throughout the game, and certainly never got into a good defensive rhythm tonight. They'll try to get back on the winning ways as they host Harvard on the 17th.

Coaches Analysis:

I thought that we could recover from the loss of Hafner and Leary, but apparently we need those 2 key elements in our lineup. Nolan is our best defensive guy, and Jonathan wasn't too far behind them. It's not as if we played terrible, but we have to beat Harvard in a couple of days. If we let teams shoot that good against us all year, it'll be a long season.
