BCF: A Rookie Tries The WMMA-Verse

Recommended Posts

On December 4th 2010 a miracle occurred. A young man was playing the demo version of the newest incarnation of World of Mixed Martial Arts, and with no other databases available he had no choice but to play the default database. Since first playing WMMA this man had no real interest in using the default data, and had always felt a bit guilty that the hard work of Adam Ryland and his team of render artists was wasted on him.

But during the one month of game time he played with GAMMA he became a changed man. A BORN AGAIN WMMA-ER. With his new found love for the fictional universe the young man decided that he would try his hand with his "local" company, British Cage Fighting, and write a diary about the progress.

That man... is me. I know, you're shocked, I'll give you some time to let it sink in.

BCF: ALOIS VS. MILNE

British Cage Fighting show they are going forward full throttle under their new management as their first show run by the new regime sees probably their two biggest names go into battle for the BCF Heavyweight Title.

Defending champion Stafford Alois (26-8) will defend his title against the challenger Harry Milne (41-7). The 34 year old Alois looks to make his third defence of his title that he won in July 1996, whilst 35 year old Milne is on the back of a long winning streak that allows him this opportunity.

Also on the card are a series of matches pitting youngsters against more experienced competitors. The Semi Main event sees Martin Cupples (6-0) take on Mills Mullally (14-4) in the Welterweight Division. In the Light Heavyweight division Tikhon Diev (3-0) takes on Michael Bannon (8-3), whilst in the Middleweight division Ginger Beaumont (3-0) goes up against Pierce Jeeler (5-2). Kicking off the show will be a Lightweight contest between Mal Beswick (3-0) and Jeremy Sproule (3-1).

BCF SIGN MOST OF FREE WORLD

British Cage Fighting today announced they had to come to terms with 24 MMA fighters to join their company. BCF president Chris Dewing gave this statement:

"Here at BCF we have a talented pool of fighters, however in our pursuit of growing the company to rival the ALPHA-1 and GAMMAs of the MMA world we are looking to run more shows. To run more shows we need more fighters, so after an exhaustive scouting procedure we have signed 24 new fighters to 5 fight contracts. Many of these fighters are between 18-22 and this will be their first shot in a major company. I know that their hunger and desire will result in them putting on a great show for the fans.

Among the bigger names signed is Leonardo da Costa, currently ranked at #20 in the world Middleweight rankings.

In division order the new signings are:

Lightweights

Jayden Karp

Chad Zoff

Haha there's something I really love about that graphic. It is so 1998.

There's some great WMMA diaries coming through and I hope they stay right throughout this game. It is what has held the WMMA community behind from TEW.

OFFICIAL CARD

BCF Heavyweight Title Match

Stafford Alois vs. Harry Milne

The Brixton Butcher is always a bit inconsistent, but I think his story is that he's never been able to hack it in the big leagues. Milne has had his day, and I'm expecting him to fall convincingly to a red hot Alois.

Welterweight Division

Martin Cupples vs. Mills Mullally

I don't know much about Cupples other than he's one of my renders. Mullally has always been pretty solid and is tough to bet against, but Cupples is fairly well rounded with big KO power.

Light Heavyweight Division

Tikhon Diev vs. Michael Bannon

Get the feeling poor old Bannon is being fed to the Ruski here. Diev by brutal GnP.

Middleweight Division

Ginger Beaumont vs. Pierce Jeeler

Neither is very good, but Beaumont slightly better for mine. Some of these UK character names are awful.

Lightweight Division

Mal Beswick vs. Jeremy Sproule

Beswick isn't great, but I think he'll either sub Sproule out or decision him.

BCF: ALOIS VS. MILNE

Fight #1

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/MalBeswick.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/vs.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/JeremySproule.jpg

Welterweight Division

Mal Beswick (5-0) vs. Jeremy Sproule (5-1)

Round 1

Beswick takes Sproule down after a brief stand-up exchange, and within seconds has got to side control. I mentioned Sproule's complete lack of ground ability beforehand, and this was proving me 100% correct. Beswick's first move was to go for an armbar and he secured it with ease, leaving Sproule with no option but to tap out. A dominant victory for Beswick but I think he'll need to beat a bigger name before he is seen as a serious contender.

Winner: Mal Beswick (4-0) via Submission (Armbar) - 4:11 of Round 1

Match Rating: Good

Middleweight Division

Ginger Beaumont (3-0) vs. Pierce Jeeler (5-2)

Round 1

This turns out to be an almost identical match here, with Beaumont securing a takedown a matter of seconds after the opening bell. Beaumont used some good ground and pound to help him advance position to side control. From there it didn't take long for Beaumont to apply an arm triangle, and with it fully secured Jeeler had to tap out. Thanks for coming Mr. Jeeler.

Winner: Ginger Beaumont (4-0) via Submission (Arm Triangle) - 4:48 of Round 1

Match Rating: Average

Fight #3

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/TikhonDiev.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/vs.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/MichaelBannon.jpg

Light Heavyweight Division

Tikhon Diev (3-0) vs. Michael Bannon (8-3)

Round 1

The story of this fight was all about takedowns. Bannon was able to shoot in and spectacularly slam Diev to the mat, and despite Diev's best attempts to get Bannon caught in an arm triangle, Bannon was able to see out the rest of the round by landing some decent ground and pound.

Round 2

Here we saw the fight take place entirely on the feet, but only because Bannon managed to stuff two attempted takedowns from Diev. Bannon was then able to dominate the striking for the remainder of the round. Bannon must have worked very hard on his takedown defence to cope with Diev's strength and explosiveness.

Round 3

Diev finally started to make his physical advantages count by getting a big takedown to start the round. After a whole round of struggling to advance position whilst also landing some strikes he is able to advance mount. Unfortunately time runs out for him before he can land any major shots or get into a submission position. The judges all scored it the same, 29-28, for Michael Bannon.

Winner: Michael Bannon (9-3) via Unanimous Decision

Match Rating: Decent

Semi Main Event

Welterweight Division

Martin Cupples (6-0) vs. Mills Mullally (14-4)

Round 1

Cupples shaded Round 1 with some good counter striking, in one instance landing three or four hard left hands to the head of Mullally after he had missed a jab. Considering the boxing backgrounds of both fighters I was surprised to see them not wanting to stand and bang very often, perhaps respect for each other's punching power caused them to be a bit cautious.

Round 2

Round 2 went to Mullally as Cupples changed his game plan to try and move in closer, Mullally was able to keep him at bay by utilising a good jab. Both men landed some hard shots, but Mullally's more accurate striking gave him the round.

Round 3

Round 3 was all to play for, but it was Cupples who took the initiative and began to finally show some dominance in striking. He landed some hard left hands, then one big left hook that knocked Mullally down. Mullally kept his wits about him when Cupples followed him to the ground, and Mullally survived until the end of the fight. Overall it was an entertaining fight even it wasn't the stand-up war I was expecting. Cupples was given the decision victory, 29-28 from all the judges.

Winner: Martin Cupples (7-0) via Unanimous Decision

Match Rating: Good

BCF Heavyweight Title Match

Stafford Alois (26-8) vs. Harry Milne (41-7)

This isn't really what I was hoping for from this fight. The whole fight was just the same thing over and over again as Milne tried without remorse to take the fight to the floor, with no interest in trying to stand and trade with Alois. Alois however showed superb takedown defence to keep the fight standing for the first three rounds, and with Milne's mindset focused on the takedowns he was able to land strikes without much fear of being countered, and connected with enough leg kicks to cause Milne to limp. Round 4 was the only round that was any different from the others, this was the only time Milne was able to get the fight to the ground and was able to advance to mount, but Alois held on to survive the round. Round 5 was back to the same, Alois kept the fight standing and peppering Milne with kicks, a tired, limping Milne was a sorry sight when the fight ended. Alois took the fight on a decision and defended his title, all the judges scoring 49-46 for him.

Winner: Stafford Alois (27-8) via Unanimous Decision

BCF: KANE VS. SITHALAYAN

British Cage Fighting have announced their next fight card which is due to be held just two weeks after their previous show. The BCF management stated in a press release that this was another way they are going about raising the profile of the company along with lowering ticket prices, increasing production values and being more agressive with their marketing.

Main eventing the show will be a BCF Welterweight Title match between champion Will Kane (14-3) and the undisputed #1 Contender Vikram Sithalayan (16-2). Kane has been Welterweight champion since February 1997, however an injury has prevented him from defending his title until now. Pakistani-born Sithalayan is currently ranked #7 in the Welterweight division throughout the world, and a win here would almost certainly propel him into the Top 25 Pound 4 Pound rankings.

The Semi Main Event will be in the always popular Heavyweight division. Native New Zealander Carter Potter (15-4) will go up against Eddie Whelan (10-3) with both men putting winning streaks on the line. Potter, who is considered to be one of the most well-rounded fighters in the Heavyweight division, is currently ranked #18 in the World Heavyweight rankings and a win here could put him in line for a shot at Stafford Alois. Whelan is one of the smaller Heavyweights in the BCF, and is well versed in Muay Thai skills that make his strikes very dangerous.

Also on the card will be a Middleweight Division contest with big title implications. BCF president Chris Dewing has stated that the winner of this internationally-themed contest between Tora Mizwar (19-6) and Henning Olsen (12-4) will get a shot at the title, currently held by Davis Spyrou. Indonesian Mizwar comes into BCF ranked as the #20 Middleweight in the world, and is one of the strongest middleweights in MMA as can be testified by those who have been punched by him. Denmark's Henning Olsen is on the back of a winning streak that has put him in a viable position for a title shot. A much better striker than grappler, Olsen will be looking to give a rude welcome to Mizwar.

There are four other fights due to take place, in the Lightweight division Timothy Latchkey (4-0) takes on George Astaire (9-4). This will be Latchkey's first venture into the Lightweight division after being undefeated at Welterweight, we will have to see whether this risk is worth it. Astaire is a judo fighter from Scotland (bizarre as it sounds) who is on the back of a winning streak himself. A good result here could put him into the Lightweight title mix.

Former US Army Lieutentant William Harrison (3-0) takes on Murray O'Hare (3-1) in a Light Heavyweight division contest. With no major international wars taking place at the moment (it's 1998 people) Harrison opted to leave the army and turn to professional MMA. Currently undefeated, he makes his BCF debut at this show. Murray O'Hare, who bears a striking resemblance to an Irish WWE performer in 12 years time, is a brawler from Northern Ireland who will look to be a tough test for Harrison.

Promising newcomer Alex Cole (7-0) takes on veteran Tucker Plumm (13-7) in the Middleweight Division. Cole's 7 victories have all be very similar as his wrestling skills have helped him defeat inferior opposition. He claims to be a well-rounded fighter though and his arrival in the BCF will give him the opportunity to prove it. Tucker Plumm is a BCF veteran who will not take kindly to they hype surrounding his younger opponent. Predominantly a stand-up fighter, Plumm is always dangerous on his feet and Cole will be looking to avoid Plumm's karate skills.

Finally, a second Welterweight contest will see Datuk Ong Ka Ting (5-0) take on Wayne McKellan (5-1). Datuk is one of Malaysia's only MMA exports and will be wanting to do his country proud. A jiu-jistu practicioner with a superb ground game Datuk is a top prospect for the division. Wayne McKellan may be a bit worried as his ground game is his weakest area, but with good stand-up skills there is always the hope he will land some good strikes and take what would probably be a suprise victory.

BCF Welterweight Title Match

Will Kane vs. Vikram Sithalayan

Kane could catch Sithalayan on the feet, Sithalayan could sub Kane from top or bottom. Tough one but I'll go with Vikram.

Heavyweight Division

Carter Potter vs. Eddie Whelan

A decent destiny stat and, once Alois and Milne retire, Potter could be #2 behind Kapur (unless you continue to go international with your hiring of course.)

Middleweight Division

#1 Contender Match

Tora Mizwar vs. Henning Olsen

Olsen has been a surprise package for me but I don't think he has the goods to beat Tora. Mizwar GnP to finish.

Lightweight Division

Timothy Latchkey vs. George Astaire

Difficult call as Astaire can be wildly inconsistent from what I've seen. I'm going to take him via sub though.

Light Heavyweight Division

William Harrison vs. Murray O'Hare

Puncher's chance for O'Haire but Harrison should be able to control him from the top.

Middleweight Division

Alex Cole vs. Tucker Plumm

Alex by whatever he feels like.

Welterweight Division

Datuk Ong Ka Ting vs. Wayne McKellan

Datuk by whatever he feels like.

Welterweight Division

Datuk Ong Ka Ting (5-0) vs. Wayne McKellen (5-1)

An absolute destruction job here, Datuk caught a kick and took the opportunity to get McKellen to the ground. From there Datuk immediately got side control, then tried an arm triangle that McKellen was just about to get out of. Unfortunately for McKellen, Datuk immediately switched to an Americana and got the submission that way.

Winner: Datak Ong Ka Ting (6-0) via Submission (Americana) - 2:53 of Round 1

Match Rating: Great

Fight #2

Middleweight Division

Alex Cole (7-0) vs. Tucker Plumm (13-7)

A perfect example of a fight where one fighter has the perfect gameplan and the other can do nothing to stop them carrying it out. Every round was almost identical, Cole would shoot in and get a takedown, then just keep the fight on the ground for the rest of the round. Cole would land a few strikes but would spend most of his time trying to advance his position, and keep Plumm tied down. Not much else to say really, Cole took all the rounds and remained undefeated.

Winner: Alex Cole (8-0) via Unanimous Decision

Match Rating: Average

Fight #3

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/WilliamHarrison.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/vs.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/MurrayOHare.jpg

Light Heavyweight Division

William Harrison (3-0) vs. Murray O'Hare (3-1)

A similar type of domination in this fight, although Harrison cannot secure a takedown in the first round he still manages to win the round with some good strikes. O'Hare doesn't seem willing to commit to anything as he looks to counter, but with Harrison not throwing much it's not a great tactic. Harrison got a takedown in Round 2 and was very active on the ground, advancing to mount and looking for an armbar that O'Hare did well to avoid and reverse into taking side control. Despite the good position O'Hare stood up and missed a jab. Good work. Harrison starts to fire away some combinations in Round 3 as his attempts at takedowns again struggle and O'Hare keeps it standing. Both fighters don't do anything rash in Round 3, even O'Hare who needed a finish to win the fight. Harrison took the decision with all three judges scoring 30-27.

Winner: William Harrison (4-0) via Unanimous Decision

Match Rating: Poor

Fight #4

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/TimothyLatchkey.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/vs.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/GeorgeAstaire.jpg

Lightweight Division

Timothy Latchkey (4-0) vs. George Astaire (9-4)

Latchkey didn't make weight by a whole 1lb, immediately annoying me although it was my decision for him to drop to 155. The first round can only be described as terrible, the fighters are stuck against the cage for about four minutes and Latchkey, still tired from his failed weight loss, is in no mood to do anything too strenuous. He won the first round purely by controlling Astaire against the cage. He tried a similar tactic in Round 2 but the fresher Astaire took the opportunity to move around and take Latchkey's back. Astaire couldn't get the rear naked choke that was the obvious move from there, nor can he get an attempted armbar, but he easily won the round. Latchkey had nothing in Round 3, throwing wild shots with no technique and takedowns that fail in hilarious fashion. Astaire does what he has to in order to win the round, connecting with punches and keeping Latchkey away from him. Astaire got the win 29-28 from all the judges. Back to Welteweight for Mr. Latchkey.

Winner: George Astaire (10-4)

Match Rating: Very Poor

Fight #5

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/ToraMizwar.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/vs.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/HenningOlsen.jpg

Middleweight Division

Tora Mizwar (19-6) vs. Henning Olsen (12-4)

What is it with all these decisions? Another rather dull fight here, Mizwar got off to a good start with a successful takedown in Round 1 that he follows up with some decent ground and pound, and before that when the fight was standing he seemed to have the advantage as well. Round 2 is a bit more exciting, despite the first three minutes of Mizwar holding Olsen against the cage, when Mizwar got the fight to the ground he was just moments away from Olsen tapping out from an arm triangle when that pesky bell sounded to end the round. Olsen may have got the better of a close third round, despite Mizwar getting him down early in the round it seemed Mizwar was lacking energy, and the fight got stood up by the referee. Mizwar tried another takedown but Olsen did well to reverse it into a takedown of his own, but the fight ended before he could do anything. It was 29-28 across the board from the judges, all for Mizwar, who gets the next title shot at Davis Spyrou.

Winner: Tora Mizwar (20-6) via Unanimous Decision

Match Rating: Poor

Heavyweight Division

Carter Potter (15-4) vs. Eddie Whelan (10-3)

Potter pretty much dominated the fight in every area, his stand up was better than Whelan's in the early part of the fight, but he chose to take Whelan down and continued his advantage there. In Round 2 Potter caught a Whelan leg kick and muscled him to the ground, then nearly caught him with an arm triangle but Whelan somehow managed to get himself out of trouble. It left Whelan short of breath though, and Potter continued his ground dominance until the end of the round. Round 3 saw Potter finish Whelan off, backing him against the cage he connected with a hard left hand that dropped Whelan. Potter went to the ground and wasted little time in looking for a submission. He got Whelan in a guillotine choke and Whelan had no option but to tap out. Good finish for Potter, and good news for the fans who finally saw another fight finished!

Winner: Carter Potter (16-4) via Submission (Guillotine Choke) - 3:30 of Round 3

Match Rating: Poor

BCF Welterweight Title Match

Will Kane (14-3) vs. Vikram Sithalayan (16-2)

Sithalayan came into the fight as a feared submission master. He left as a feared submission master with a title around his waist. The first round saw Kane land some good punches but an attempted kick was caught by Sithalayan and he quickly dragged Kane to the mat. Sithalayan took about 0.005 seconds to pass from half guard into mount, but his first attempt at an armbar resulted in Kane rolling through and taking side control himself. Kane stood up to get out of Sithalayan's grasp, but back on the feet Sithalayan was quick to get a takedown. Sithalayan only had time to pass to side control before the round ended. Round 2 began with Kane foolishly trying another kick, Sithalayan caught it again and took him back down. Sithalayan moved to side control and attempted an armbar, but somehow Kane managed to get away from him before his arm was snapped. Sithalayan said "enough of this crap" and went into mount to go for the armbar again. This time Kane couldn't defend it and had no choice but to tap out, the other two armbar attempts probably making his decision even easier. Sithalayan is the new Welterweight champion... and who's going to beat him?

Winner: Vikram Sithalyan (17-2) via Submission (Armbar) - 2:35 of Round 2

WORLD HEADLINES

On the same day as BCF: Kane vs. Sithalayan there just so happened to be fight cards held by SIGMA and GAMMA, the following night FLB and XCC ran shows, and KDM FC had a show a few days later.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/SIGMA.jpg

Quite a few interesting results on the show, Dannii Skala defeated Shane Gilchrist with a Unanimous Decision ranked as Very Poor. Alberto Basora defeated Dominykas Jankovic via first round submission that not only won Submission of the Night but Fight of the Night as well. Manish Khan defeated Pedro Alves by TKO in less than a minute, Khan would be somebody that I would have a lot of interest in if the BCF had a Featherweight division. The Main Event was a SIGMA Heavyweight Title match between Terron Cabal and Grzegorz Boniek. The fight reached the fourth round before Cabal landed a massive punch that knocked Boniek out cold. Cabal is the new SIGMA Heavyweight champion and maintains his undefeated record.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/GAMMA.jpg

For some reason Marlon John was put in the prelims, he got his revenge though by winning in three minutes and taking home some extra money for Fight of the Night. Rufus Stephens defeated Yevgeni Sipatov via Unanimous Decision, not much else to say about that. Junior Patinkin made a big statement with a dominant decision victory over fellow Light Heavyweight contender Anthony LeToussier, but the big story was the main event. The Welterweight Title was on the line between Julio Regueiro and Jack Humphreys. With Regueiro the heavy favourite it was no surprise that he dominated the first four rounds but couldn't finish Humphreys off. In Round 5 Humphreys caught Regueiro with a punch, Regueiro dropped to the floor, and Humphreys finished him off with punches for the upset win and the title!

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/FLB.jpg

The opening bout of the card was ranked as Fantastic, big news for a three round decision. In many ways the result was an upset as Mario de Souza defeated #21 Middleweight Jerezo, the fight won Fight of the Night. Heavyweight prospect Murilo Satinho defeated Marcelo Boccoli with a second round armbar, that got him submission of the night. Another upset saw Kerlon Guerra de Bastos defeat Gladstone Lopes by Split Decision. However the Main Event went as you'd expect, scary Welterweight Manuel Silva defeated Gabriel Gallego by KO, a knee to the face to be exact, in the first round to defend his title.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/XCC.jpg

Only two big matches to report on, both in their impressive Featherweight division. Sammy Gaffigan defeated Luiz Machado in the second round with a big KO punch. In the main event Philip Ziskie defended the XCC Featherweight title with a TKO victory over Azor Portela Nunes in the third round.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/KDMFC.jpg

More lighter weight class action here, Masahiro Maeno defeated Davi Carlos Ramos by submission in Round 3, taking home Submission of the Night and Fight of the Night for his trouble. Atep of Indonesia defeated Hokusai Araki with a KO Knee to the Face, and then in the Main Event it was a battle of the #2 and #3 Featherweights in the world. Li-Kong Ho took his record to 19-0 and the KDM FC Featherweight Title with a 5th round submission victory over Tomohiro Takeuchi.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/WEFF.jpg

They had a show. I didn't care.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/ALPHA1.jpg

They had a show the week after mine so I thought I'd chuck them in as well. Not a lot of the big names on show, but then again they had Hassan Fezzik in the main event. Fukusaburo Hirano defeated Keita Oshima with a first round armbar in a Welterweight match, he remains undefeated. In the Middleweight division Mal Phe Roby defeat Gempachi Higa in Round 2 via TKO. In the big match of the evening the widely recognised best fighter in the world Hassan Fezzik defended his Heavyweight title by defeating Kunimichi Kikuchi, himself the #3 Heavyweight in the world. Fezzik took just 3:41 to get Kikuchi to tap out to an armbar, and Fezzik took home Submission of the Night to add to his already massive paycheck.

The first match of the night will see debutant Evan Pizzarro (2-0) take on Bret Clement (4-0) in a Welterweight division match. Pizzarro is another 18 year old prospect brought in to usher a new generation of fighters to BCF, and because he's cheap. From New Orleans he has a strong background in judo but some superb submissions too. New Zealander Bret Clement is fundamentally a kickboxer, and his stand-up game outshines the rest of his skills by some way. Clement will be hoping to use his quick hand speed to his advantage.

Second up will be a Lightweight contest between Jayden Karp (1-0) and Jochen Bellof (3-1). Hailing from Blackpool Jayden Karp is one of the few English fighters brought in by the BCF management, with a slick submission game and under-rated striking skills making him a hot prospect. Jochen Bellof may have lost his first pro MMA fight, but he has fought back to win his last three. A very quick puncher with good technique, Bellof's victories revolve almost exclusively around his striking.

The third match has a European flavour as Iceland's Olafur Petursson (4-0) goes up against Heiko Pander (1-0) from Germany. Petursson is a tough kickboxer with a multitude of strikes at his disposal, and his 4 victories thus far have all come by KO or TKO. Heiko Pander is probably fighting above his preferred weight, but with no Featherweight division the BCF hope he will be able to cope at 155. Strong at both striking and wrestling, 20 year-old Pander gets some of the best training in MMA at the Mantas Andreyev Fighting camp.

In the Middleweight division we will see Leonardo da Costa (12-6) take on Ram Phookan (8-3). Da Costa makes his way to the BCF with a lot of respect for his jiu-jitsu abilities, he is one of the top BJJ trainers in Brazil, but thus far his career has lacked consistency with his tendancy to work away from his strengths and try to trade punches. Phookan has become well-known for his hard jab, and despite lacking ground skills he is a strong man with a great sprawl to avoid takedowns.

The Heavyweight division's sole outing of the evening will see Sylvester Collins (3-0) take on Howard Pursglove (10-5). Collins comes into the BCF as a massive prospect. He's a huge human being with surprising speed, and his size is matched by his strength. A very good amateur wrestler with KO power, this guy could be a big name to watch. Pursglove doesn't have the aura surrounding him that Collins does, but he is a solid fighter not to be overlooked. He is predominantly a boxer, but will no doubt be training other areas before this contest.

The semi-main event of the show will see popular David Webb (14-3) take on Gordon Idle (9-2). From Kent, Webb is one of England's top representatives in MMA, and is very skilled in catch wrestling. A former BCF Welterweight champion, a win here could give him an opportunity to reclaim the title. Manchester's Idle comes in to the fight on the back of three sucessive victories, and with a powerful takedown he can use some good ground and pound to get the win. The winner of this fight will be granted the first opportunity to face Vikram Sithalayan for the BCF Welterweight title. Good luck with that.

The Main Event of the evening will see the BCF Light Heavyweight title up for grabs when the champion Curt Kitson (9-0) makes the first defence of his title against Garry McSweegan (20-7) in a battle of Scottish fighters. Hailing from Aberdeen in Scotland, Kitson brings a broad variety of skills to the cage. A good amateur boxer he is also well versed in judo, as well as training intensely to become good at submission fighting as well. From the Scottish capital Edinburgh, Garry McSweegan is a man who comes out wanting nothing more than to knock his opponent out. His cardio has been called into question in the past, but his recent success have not only earned him a title shot, but a world ranking of #18 in the Light Heavyweight division.

BCF: KITSON VS. MCSWEEGAN

Fight #1

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/EvanPizzarro.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/vs.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BretClement.jpg

Welterweight Division

Evan Pizzarro (2-0) vs. Bret Clement (4-0)

Round 1

Why this was quite the squash match. Pizzarro got the fight to the ground LITERALLY straight away, and landed some fairly weak ground and pound. Pizzarro quickly moved into side control and within a matter of moments he had an armbar locked in. Clement struggled but didn't want his arm destroyed, so he tapped out and gave Pizzarro a 90 second victory.

Winner: Evan Pizzarro (3-0) via Submission (Armbar) - 1:30 of Round 1

Match Rating: Good

Fight #2

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/JaydenKarp.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/vs.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/JochenBellof.jpg

Lightweight Division

Jayden Karp (1-0) vs. Jochen Bellof (3-1)

Round 1

Bellof started the fight off with some good boxing, landing some nice jabs and keeping Karp out of range despite Karp having a 6 inch reach advantage. Karp eventually got Bellof against the cage and executed a takedown, but despite getting into side control quickly the round ran out before he could do anything more.

Round 2

Again it's Bellof who gets the better of the stand-up, and Karp is again unable to get close enough to grapple and get Bellof to the mat. Karp landed a hard left jab on a significant number of occasions, and there was little Karp could do to avoid it.

Round 3

Karp attempted a takedown early in the round but Bellof kept the fight standing, Bellof then landed some decent punches. Karp attemped another takedown which Bellof sprawled again, but Karp was able to land a good couple of jabs of his own. Karp tried one more takedown before the round ended, but again Bellof stopped him and stayed standing. All three judges gave the fight to Jochen Bellof, 30-27 twice and one 29-28.

Winner: Jochen Bellof (4-1) via Unanimous Decision

Match Rating: Good

Fight #3

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/OlafurPetursson.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/vs.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/HeikoPander.jpg

Lightweight Division

Olafur Petursson (4-0) vs. Heiko Pander (1-0)

Round 1

You wouldn't have known that Pander was a smaller fighter than Petursson as he landeded a series of quick punches, and then another flurry of jabs shortly afterwards. Pander then shot in and got a takedown landing in guard, but quickly moved past it and into side control. From there Pander moves to try and take the back of Petursson, and with very little effort he is able to do so. Instead of going for a choke Pander opts to start unleashing punches, Petursson turtles up but Pander keeps on throwing until the referee jumps in! A dominant debut win for Pander.

Winner: Heiko Pander (2-0) via TKO (Strikes) - 2:47 of Round 1

Match Rating: Great

--------------------------------------

Fight #4

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/LeonardodaCosta.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/vs.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/RamPhookan.jpg

Middleweight Division

Leonardo da Costa (12-6) vs. Ram Phookan (8-3)

Round 1

After a cautious start from both fighters it is da Costa who makes the first move, trying to get a takedown but Phookan's sprawl is very impressive and the fight remains standing. Phookan connects with a hard left hand, da Costa moves in for another takedown but Phookan again blocks it. Phookan connects with another hard left hand just before the round ends, and he's probably done enough to win the round.

Round 2

Phookan starts the round by connecting with a good combination of jabs and crosses, da Costa tries another takedown but as he moves in Phookan counters with a hard right hook that nearly drops da Costa! Da Costa connects with a good jab, but another attempt at a takedown fails. Phookan lands another hard right hand and da Costa looks hurt again, thankfully for him the round ends soon after.

Round 3

Da Costa FINALLY gets what he's been wanting all fight, he ducks a Phookan right hand and gets a single leg takedown. Da Costa's ground skills soon come to the surface as he moves to side control, then takes Phookan's back within a minute. He gets the hooks in and starts to flatten Phookan out, and he gets a deep choke in! Phookan is forced to tap, da Costa gets the win from the brink of defeat.

Winner: Leonardo da Costa (13-6) via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) - 2:07 of Round 3

Match Rating: Good

--------------------------------------

Fight #5

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/SylvesterCollins.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/vs.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/HowardPursglove.jpg

Heavyweight Division

Sylvester Collins (3-0) vs. Howard Pursglove (10-5)

Round 1

Collins has a 28lbs weight advantage. Sorry Howard. I'll throw you an extra bonus for being a sacrifice. Collins comes out swinging and connects with two big right hands, before shooting in and getting a double leg takedown with the greatest of ease. Collins begins to work and get side control, then gives that up and just moves straight to mount. As you do. Then the biggest shock comes as Collins goes for an ARMBAR. And it WORKS. Collins applies the armbar with good technique and Pursglove ain't getting out of that. He taps, Collins wins, the guy's a monster.

Winner: Sylvester Collins (4-0) via Submission (Armbar) - 2:18 of Round 1

Match Rating: Great

Semi Main Event

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/DavidWebb.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/vs.jpghttp://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/GordonIdle-1.jpg

Welterweight Division

David Webb (14-3) vs. Gordon Idle (9-2)

Round 1

Webb has odds of -780 for this fight. He'd better win then. He does. Idle comes out not afraid to stand and trade with Webb, he lands a nice sequence of jabs and a flurry of good left and right hands. Perhaps concerned about Idle's boxing skills Webb pushes him up against the cage, then gets the underhooks to get Idle to the ground, landing in half guard. Webb shows his l33t ground skillz by moving from half guard into mount in one simple, easy-to-manage repayment, and he's another fan of the armbar as he starts to go for one. Idle tries to get his arm free but Webb's got it trapped, and when it's fully secured Idle has no choice but to tap out. Webb goes on to be Vikram Sithalayan's first challenger...

Winner: David Webb (15-3) via Submission (Armbar) - 4:21 of Round 1

Match Rating: Great

BCF Light Heavyweight Title Match

Curt Kitson (9-0) vs. Garry McSweegan (20-7)

Round 1

McSweegan starts by moving forward looking to pressure Kitson, but Kitson avoids his punches and lands a good jab. Kitson drives forwards and gets a takedown that McSweegan cannot avoid, Kitson starts to land some decent shots from the guard before moving into side control. Kitson lands some more shots and attempts a kimura, but despite it being very tight and McSweegan's arm being bent backwards he somehow gets it free and escapes the hold. Kitson is able to land one more knee to the ribs before the round ends.

Round 2

Kitson again countered some missed McSweegan punches with a nice jab, but when trying a takedown he got met by a sprawl from McSweegan that ended with McSweegan getting him to the ground and on top. Kitson manages to execute a perfect sweep to alnd in side control, and McSweegan is in trouble. Kitson lands a knee to the ribs before moving into mount, then goes for the BCF submission of the day, the armbar. Kitson's is just as good as those who have done it already tonight, and McSweegan gets his arm hyper-extended before tapping out! Kitson retains the BCF Light Heavyweight title.

WORLD HEADLINES

A couple more shows from the rest of the World of Mixed Martial Arts to update you on. See what I did there? Yeah you did.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/GAMMA.jpg

GAMMA racked in 195,906 PPV buys for their latest show, which featured several ranked fighters going up against unranked fighters. What cowards. In the prelims John Rivero (Light Heavyweight #25) defeated Bryan Van Den Hauwe, but he missed weight by three pounds and forfeited some of his purse. Beau Gorshin (Lightweight #12) defeated Aaron McBroom by first round submission, Linfield Ballard (#9 Light Heavyweight) defeated Mark Cohen by TKO in Round 1, and Tim Boyer (#4 Heavyweight) also won by TKO, albeit in the second round. In the Main Event Sean Morrison (#1 Lightweight, #7 P4P) defeated Truck Gleeson (#7 Lightweight) to retain the BCF Lightweight title. Morrison dominated the fight from start to finish and won by Armbar in Round 3 to maintain his status as the world's best Lightweight fighter.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/ALPHA1.jpg

ALPHA-1 had 104,832 PPV buys, which is still 104,832 more than the BCF have ever done, and they had one of the more impressive KOs of the year when Harano Oshiro (#21 Middleweight) KO'd Kyuwa Itou with a knee to the face with just seconds remaining in the first round. The ALPHA-1 Middleweight title was on the line and ended in one of the closest decisions in recent history. Heiji Endo (#15 Middleweight) defeated Bambang Sriyanto (#7 Middleweight) to retain the title in a Split Decision victory.

Both GAMMA and ALPHA are still far ahead of the BCF, and at this point nearly untouchable for either myself or SIGMA who are ranked almost identically to us. The only thing I can do business-wise is to keep building on the progress we made and look for a TV or PPV deal as soon as possible to expand the company into new areas. Fingers crossed...

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c98/chris_kotw/BCF/BCF-1.jpg

We've signed new contracts with the following fighters to keep them all under contract for at least another four fights.

Tikhon Diev

Buzzy Tuttle

Crow Leddy

Howard Pursglove

Jochen Bellof

Olafur Petursson

Plus we've signed Valdo Calamari to the Welterweight division on a 5 fight contract.

I can honestly say I low-balled them quite a bit, especially with their signing bonuses, but I've got to think about my profit margins! Besides, nobody said it was a good economy in the UK for MMA fighters...

Oh, and one last thing, after the next BCF event there will be quite the big announcement regarding the BCF's future. You can predict that if you want too :p.

BCF: SPYROU vs. RUSH

BCF President Chris Dewing came clean and admitted a mistake to the assembled media when announcing this show, something not often seen in this business:

Yeah, we kind of came unstuck here. We've been wanting to run 2 shows a month and it's been a very positive step forward for the company in both product awareness and financially, but we've hit a point where we were in desperate need of a worthy main event. Tora Mizwar was scheduled to receive the next Middleweight title shot but we have asked our champion Davis Spyrou to make a title defence at this show against Andrew Rush. Mizwar will be getting his title shot at a later date against the winner of this contest.

It's been tough but we are confident we can get through this, and although we have had to cut the number of fights on the show back to 5, we will make this up to our fans by lowering the ticket price for this event.

The first bout of the evening will take place in the Lightweight division, and we will see Tim Oldacres (1-0) take on Ignatius Hepfinger (8-5). Oldacres is making a permanent run in MMA after training extensively to develop an all-round game to complement his strong kickboxing. Ignatius Hepfinger doesn't just have a bizarre name, he is a strong kickboxer who is certainly no slouch when it comes to striking. However you have to wonder if this fight will show the difference between a cross-trained competitor and a one-dimensional fighter.

In the Light Heavyweight division we will see newcomer Dag Kreuger (3-0) taking on veteran George Laurent (36-12). Kreuger joins the BCF as one of the few Swedish fighters in MMA today, however the BCF scouts have hinted that he could be good enough to help promote to sport in Scandanavia. Although he's a powerhouse wrestler with vicious ground and pound, his consistency could be the attribute that helps him the most. He gets a tough test first up as he goes against a former BCF Light Heavyweight champion in George Laurent. Laurent is a vastly experienced fighter who has seen it all, winning fights with his huge left hand and strong defensive skills.

We will see a Heavyweight division contest between Percy Catcher (9-2) going against Fritz Phipps (4-0). Leamington's Catcher is a typical British heavyweight in the sense that he's primarily a stand up fighter and doesn't like to be on the ground, however he has developed his takedown defence to keep the fight standing as much as possible. Fritz Phipps is the a-typical British heavyweight in the sense that he has a strong wrestling base that allows him to get the fight to the ground quickly and unleash some furious ground and pound.

In the semi-Main Event Hans-Peter Schneider (12-5) takes on Doug Hansen (15-4) in the Welterweight division. Schneider is one of the premier fighters from Germany who epitomises the German stereotype of hard work and attention to detail. He is very well-rounded, but may suffer from not exceling at any one skill. Doug Hansen is one of Scotland's favourite fighters and is known as much for his big mouth as his fighting skills. A high level judoka with a killer guillotine choke, he does suffer from being a bit small for the Welterweight division, but refuses to drop to 155.

In the hastily rushed and unintended Main Event we will see the BCF Middleweight title up for grabs when Davis Spyrou (18-4) defends his title against Andrew Rush (13-6). This will be Spyrou's second title defence since winning the title in December 1996, and he will be looking to impose his high-level kickboxing skills in this fight. The one factor that has always been strong is his conditioning, an advantage that becomes even more crucial in the five round championship fights. Andrew Rush may have been brought in as a last-minute contender, but he is well deserving of a title opportunity after winning his last four fights. A fighter very similar to Spyrou as far as skills are concerned, Rush's accuracy and striking speed are what could give him the best chance of leaving the show with the belt.

Tim Oldacres (1-0) vs. Ignatius Hepfinger (8-5)

Round 1

Hepfinger avoids a jab, then moves forward to look for a left hand of his own. Oldacres ducks it and counters with a HUGE right hand, and Hepfinger is down and OUT COLD. Holy crap. Well, there's your KO of the Night sewn up in the first fight. Next please.

Light Heavyweight Division

Dag Kreuger (3-0) vs. George Laurent (36-12)

Round 1

The very first strikes of the match are when Laurent counters a jab and unloads a succession of vicious left hands, putting Kreuger down on the canvas. Kreuger is dazed but comes to his senses quickly, looking for an up-kick to connect as Laurent moves in. Laurent avoids the kicks and dives in with a left hand, before moving through into side control. Laurent starts unloading elbows and Kreuger is struggling to defend them. Laurent traps one of Kreuger's arms and continues to land hard elbows, and the referee steps in and calls the fight off! A premature stoppage perhaps? Probably not, as Kreuger wasn't moving from that position any time soon.

Winner: George Laurent (37-12) via TKO (Strikes) - 1:30 of Round 1

Match Rating: Good

Heavyweight Division

Percy Catcher (9-2) vs. Fritz Phipps (4-0)

Round 1

It's all on the feet in Round 1 as Phipps is the more aggressive of the two, Catcher tries to connect with a series of punches but Phipps avoids them and lands a hard left. Phipps then lands a barrage of hard punches that forces Catcher back against the cage covering up, he seems unsteady on his feet too but he ducks a big right hand. Phipps throws another big right but Catcher counters with a stiff right hook that almost knocks Phipps down! This topsy-turvy round comes to an end after Phipps connects with two solid left hands.

Round 2

Phipps moves in looking to grapple in Round 2 but Catcher looks to strike, Phipps dodges them and hits some more good lefts. Catcher connects with a series of jabs, but from this point onwards the fighters get a bit tired and are more reluctant to move in and strike. They circle from some time before Catcher tries to land some punches, however they lack accuracy. They go back to circling each other until the round ends.

Round 3

For the first time in the fight Phipps aimed specifically to get the fight to the ground, and to the ground he did get it. Catcher pulled guard, and almost annoyed at this Phipps stood up. Phipps dived in and went through into side control. A tired Phipps took some time to rest up, which worked in a surprising way. He suddenly went for an armbar which seemd to catch Catcher by surprise. The armbar is in deep, but Catcher just manages to get out, perhaps due to the perspriation factor. Phipps holds on in side control until the end of the fight, and he takes the victory from all the judges, each one scoring it 29-28.

Winner: Fritz Phipps (5-0) via Unanimous Decision

Welterweight Division

Hans-Peter Schneider (12-5) vs. Doug Hansen (15-4)

Round 1

Hansen connects with some small punches at the start before trying a takedown, but his single leg attempt is avoided by Schneider. Hansen then moves in for a double leg takedown, but Schneider sprawls and the fight remains standing. Schneider connects with a couple of punches, Hansen tries ANOTHER takedown but again Scheinder stops him, and connects with a shot to the shoulder. Hansen lands a flurry of small punches and tries ANOTHER TAKEDOWN, Schneider AGAIN keeps him at bay. What a strange round.

Round 2

Schneider comes out and connects with a nice jab, but Hansen is nothing if not persistant, and he finally gets the takedown he's been looking for. Hansen seems a bit tired but he manages to get through Schneider's defences and into side control. Schneider tries to escape but ends up getting his arm trapped, Hansen goes for the BCF standard submission, the armbar, but Schneider just about gets free. Unfortunately for Schneider, Hansen still has a hold of his arms. Hansen adjusts his position and gets him in an arm triangle. This one is too secure for Schneider to handle, and he has to tap out. Hansen gets the submission victory.

Winner: Doug Hansen (16-4) - 4:05 of Round 2

Match Rating: Good

Middleweight Title Match

Davis Spyrou (18-4) vs. Andrew Rush (13-6)

Round 1

Spyrou lands the first shot with an inside leg kick, and both fighters move in to exchange but neither of them land anything solid. Considering the kickboxing background of both these fighters you'd think they'd do more striking, but they don't. Rush tries to clinch and do some dirty boxing, and he does connect with a punch to the ribs, but Spyrou avoids a jab and connects with a hard body kick before the round ends.

Round 2

Rush comes out a bit more aggressively, including throwing a head kick that just misses, but that allows Spyrou to land a leg kick. Spyrou moves forward looking to connect with some quick punches but Rush backs away and out of range, before connecting with a punch to the body. Rush then dodges a jab and HITS A HEAD KICK! And SPYROU GOES DOWN! Rush dives in and Spyrou quickly gets him into half guard, but Rush knows he has a chance here. He unloads with as many punches and elbows as he can from half guard, Spyrout stops some of them but a lot get through. However Rush over-commits himself and Spyrou is able to kick him away and stand up just before the bell sounds.

Round 3

Spyrou is a bit more reserved this round, he doesn't want to get caught again, but he does get tagged by a left hand early on. Rush connects with two more hard jabs, but he misses a jab and Spyrou CLOBBERS him with a left hand, then two more quickly afterwards to drop Rush to the canvas! Spyrou dives on top and gets side control, before unleashing punches at a constantly high rate. Spyrou keeps on punching and soon the referee says enough and calls the fight off! Spyrou successfully defends his title, but Rush came close to scoring an upset!

Winner: Davis Spyrou (19-4) via TKO (Strikes) - 2:29 of Round 3
