The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is the largest mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion company in the world that hosts most of the top-ranked fighters and produces numerous events worldwide. The UFC has seven weight-divisions and enforces the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. Dana White serves as the president of the UFC; Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta control its parent company, Zuffa, LLC.

Inspired by vale tudo tournaments in Brazil, the UFC and the sport of MMA have roots in the ancient Olympic combat sport of Pankration in 648 BC. The UFC held its first competition in Denver, Colorado in 1993. Showcasing fighters of different disciplines — including boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, Muay Thai, karate and other styles — the UFC sought to identify the most effective martial art in a real fight. After a period of political backlash, the UFC gradually underwent reform by embracing stricter rules and achieving sanctioning with State Athletic Commissions.

With a cable-television deal and expansion into Canada, Europe, Australia the Middle East, Asia and new markets within the United States, the UFC as of 2011 has gained in popularity, along with greater mainstream-media coverage. As of 2011 viewers can access UFC programming on pay-per-view television in the U.S., Brazil , Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Italy. UFC programming can also be found on Spike, Versus and Ion Television in the U.S., on ESPN in the United Kingdom and Ireland, as well as in over 130 countries and 20 different languages worldwide.

UFC Champions;

Heavyweight (206-265lbs): Cain Valasquez since October 23, 2010 (UFC 121) beat Brock Lesner.

Light Heavyweight (186-205lbs): Jon Jones since March 19, 2011 (UFC 128) beat Mauricio Rua.

Middleweight (171-185lbs): Anderson Silva since October 14, 2006 (UFC 64) beat Rich Franklin.

Welterweight (156-170lbs): Georges St. Pierre (Undisputed Champion) since April 19, 2008 (UFC 83) beat Matt Serra.

Lightweight (146-155lbs): Frank Edgar since April 10, 2010 (UFC 112) beat B.J. Penn.

Featherweight (136-145lbs): Jose Aldo since November 20, 2010 (when it was announced that has the current WEC Featherweight champion he would become the first UFC Featherweight Champion).

Bantamweight (126-135lbs): Dominick Cruz since December 16, 2010 beat Scott Jorgensen (in defence of his WEC Bantamweight Title) to become the first UFC Bantamweight Champion.

Top Contenders;

Heavyweight - Former Champ Brock Lesner will soon be facing fellow Ultimate Fighter 13 Coach and number one contender Junior dos Santos for the right to face the undefeated Cain Velasquez. Junior dos Santos was offered to wait for Cain to recover from a shoulder injury but choose to have another fight rather than wait the 9+ months that it will take Cain to recover.

Light Heavyweight - Rashad Evans and Phil Davis sit at the top of an hanfull of potential contenders that also includes Matt Hamill who wants another shot at Jon Jones and Forrest Griffin who holds victories over some of the divisions top fighters.

Middleweight - Yushin Okami is probably the next man to face the seemingly invincible Anderson Silva, and then you've got Michael Besping, Alan Belcher and Brian Stann all needing to step up and prove they have what it takes.

Welterweight - Jake Shields is the next man to step up to fight GSP, Jon Fitch is almost certainly next in line with Carlos Condit one big win away from a shot at the strap. Of course Diego Sanchez, Mike Pyle and Jake Ellenberger all might have something to say on the matter.

Lightweight - Anthony Pettis was expected by just about everyone involved in MMA and the UFC to step up and fight for the Lightweight Title after Resolution but after the draw between Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar we will first see Edgar v Marnard III and rather than wait it seems Pettis is looking to fight and Clay Guida will be the man to step up and try to get into the title frame himself. Melvin Guillard and Jim Miller are maybe one big win away from earning a title shot themselfs.

Featherweight - Mark Hominick is set to be the first man to try and beat Jose Aldo in the UFC era of his championship reign. After dropping down weight Kenny Florian will face Diego Nunes with the winner possible getting a shot against the winner of Aldo v Hominick. The undefeated Chad Mendes is another who is battling for a shot at Aldo leaving the future of this new division in the UFC looking very bright indeed.

Bantamweight - Former WEC Featherweight Champ and popular figure Urijah Faber has dropped down to Bantamweight and looks to be the first man to try to topple Dominick Cruz in the UFC, Michael McDonald, Demetrious Johnson, Renan Barao and Miguel Torres are the men who sit below Faber on the ladder and all four will be looking to impress in the coming months.

Frankie 'The Answer' Edgar (13-1-1) vs (10-0-1-1NC) Gray 'The Bully' Maynard

Bruce Buffer "This nest fight is your maaaaaain event of the evening and is a UFC Lightweight Title bout in the Lightweight Division. Introducing first in the blue corner, weighing in at 154lbs this man is a Wrestler with a record of 13 wins 1 loss and 1 draw which was against his opponant tonight. Fighting out of Toms River, New Jersey Frankie 'The Answer' Edgar ...

Introducing his opponant, fighting in the red corner, weighing in at 155lbs this man is a also a Wrestler with a record of 10 wins 0 losses, 1 draw and 1 No Contest. Fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada Gray 'The Bully' Maynard"

Edgar looks for a quick takedown and Maynard quick to react tries to grab a guillotine off the takedown but Edgar has him down and he has to pull guard, Edgar tries to get through the guard and Maynard throws a few punches whenever he gets chance - Edgar takes the round.

Tentative circling is the play for round 2 until Edgar from nowhere takes Maynard down and he has to pull guard the fans were abit restless after that round, not alot happened i'd say Maynard took it.

Edgar once again takes Maynard down this time at around the 1:30 mark of the round, Edgar throws some weak punches but is clearly just taking the moment too catch is breath, he continues to throw the odd punch and mainly smothers his opponant and moves him along the ground as the round is closed out - Edgar should of took the round.

Edgar once again is the aggresor and takes Maynard down but after a battle on the ground it is Maynard who rolls using an Armbar attempt as a way of getting on top in side control. Edgar probably just took that round.

Maynard is taken down with a single leg and has to defend a choke attempt from Edgarwho seems to of took this slow moving final round.

Lets go to the judges ..

All three Judges score the Fight 49-46 to the winner and Still UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie 'The Answer' Edgar after 5 rounds (Very Poor).
