-- In a pre-taped promo, Ring of Honor Executive Producer Jim Cornette makes a statement to the viewing audience. "Ladies and gentlemen, there is no easy way around the things I have the unfortunate duty of informing you about this evening. In an effort to appease ROH World Champion CM Punk, the front office has decided to lift it's ban on Kevin Steen. We hope that Ring of Honor World Champion CM Punk will show up tonight, and give our great fans that match they paid to see. Kevin Steen, you will be dealt with in short order, my friend. We might have let CM Punk bring you back, but I'll be damned sure I see to it that you get taken OUT again!"

 

CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI -VS- EL GENERICO

Generico did his usual shtick, and Claudio played into most of it well. In the end, this match was all about Claudio and he picked up the win with a Ricola Bomb. (RATING: 56)

-- Prince Nana comes to the ring, along with a horde of Embassy members. Princess Mia, "The New Crown Jewel" Petey Williams, and his personal bodyguard, "The Man Beast" Rhino. Nana addresses Williams first, telling him he has to prove himself tonight; if he is going to be the "Crown Jewel," he is going to have to be tough, and he is going to have to fight to preserve the honor and dignity that comes with his position in The Embassy. Williams simply answers with a, "Yes, Prince Nana."

 

ROH TELEVISION TITLE MATCH

"THE NEW CROWN JEWEL" PETEY WILLIAMS © -VS- NAOMICHI MARUFUJI

This was an athletic, quick-paced match-up that got the crowd going. Marufuji shined for a while while Petey did a great job of selling his stiff chops and kicks. Petey looked even better, picking up the win with a brutal looking Canadian Destroyer. Marufuji did a wonderful job of selling it, and even had trainers come out to check on him while Petey celebrated. (RATING: 61)

WINNER: PETEY WILLIAMS

 

-- Prince Nana grabs the microphone again as the trainers help Marufuji walk to the back. He said that was just the beginning, and those who cross The Embassy will suffer what Colt Cabana is about to suffer at the hands of Rhino!

 

RHINO -VS- COLT CABANAThis match was about as close to a squash as you can get in Ring of Honor, Rhino looked just brutal for a while before he nearly broke Cabana in half with a Gore. (RATING: 58)

-- Steve Corino and Jimmy Jacobs come out to the ring, sans music as they share a mic on the way out. "Now that I can say his name, and I don't care if he's here or not," Corino begins. "But, Kevin Steen, sooner or later. . . your ass is mine, pal!" Jacobs nods in agreement as they reach the ring, and they begin to look around as the crowd buzzes. . . was CM Punk going to show up?

-- From the crowd, Punk begins to make his way to the ring with the ROH World title hefted over his shoulder! Punk doesn't say a word, just heads to the ring and prepares for his main event match!

 

MAIN EVENT

ROH WORLD TITLE MATCH

CM PUNK © -VS- STEVE CORINO

These two had the benefit of a hot crowd on their side, as the crowd was on the edge of their seats during the slow-paced, oldschool beginning. Despite the cheers of the crowd, Punk managed to keep heel heat coming on him throughout the match. Punk worked Corino's leg over for much of the match, and any time Corino would look to gain momentum, Punk was back to the leg. When Corino finally did begin to gain the upper hand, the lights in the arena began to flicker. . .

 

 

Kevin Steen begins to make his way out through the crowd! He doesn't even need to reach the ring for his distraction to allow Punk to surprise Corino with a Go2Sleep and pick up the win! (RATING: 71)

WINNER: CM PUNK

 

-- Jimmy Jacobs tries to stop Steen from getting into the ring, but Steen clobbers him with a huge forearm as he comes bounding over the guardrail. Steen grabs a chair and a microphone, putting the boots to Jacobs a few more times before he rolls into the ring. Steen lays the chair on the ring mat, and Punk hauls Corino to his feet; Steen grabs hold of Corino and nails him with a sick Package Piledriver onto the chair! Punk grabs the chair and wraps it around Corino's ankle while the commentators rave about how Steen did this to Jim Cornette! "My name is Kevin Steen. . . and I am 'The Antichrist of Pro-Wrestling!'" Steen yells before leaning down into Corino's face. "And Steven Corino. . . YOU. . . have unleashed hell. . . on Ring of Honor!" As Steen backs up and prepares to get a running start, Jimmy Jacobs comes charging into the ring with a chair of his own and clearing house as we go off the air!

At the end of last week's show, ROH fans saw Steve Corino injured in a sick attack at the hands of CM Punk and Kevin Steen. Jacobs went to ROH Executive Producer Jim Cornette to plead for a match with Kevin Steen, but Cornette decided that Jacobs would be the next in line to try and wrest the ROH World title from CM Punk. Cornette also mentioned that, although he had been reinstated by Ring of Honor, Kevin Steen was suspended and barred from the arena for this week's show; Steen will be reinstated once the the ROH front office had decided on and dealt out a fitting punishment for his attacks on Jim Cornette and Steve Corino.

RING OF HONOR ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF THE PICK SIX RANKINGS

  • In an effort to determine the best Ring of Honor wrestler to represent the company in taking the ROH World title back from outsider CM Punk, ROH Executive Producer Jim Cornette has announced the impending return of the Pick Six Rankings!
  • In the coming months, the first set of Pick Six Rankings will be released; at that point the wrestler ranked highest will receive an ROH World title shot at November's All Star Extraveganza iPPV!
  • Two matches have been announced for this month's iPPV, Crossing A New Line, and they can be found below in the incomplete card for the show.

Omega looked good in this match, where Elgin's downfall proved to be an interference backfire from Elgin's manager Truth Martini. (RATING: 40)

-- A video recap is show on CM Punk and Kevin Steen injuring Steve Corino last week, focusing on how Jimmy Jacobs stopped Steen from breaking Corino's leg.

 

THE EMBASSY (BRENT ALBRIGHT & TOMASSO CIAMPA) -VS- THE ALL-NIGHT EXPRESS

Prince Nana continues to lead The Embassy into the tag team ranks in Ring of Honor, this time with Ciampa and his personal enforcer Brent Albright. ANX showed a lot of good teamwork, and the commentators put them over as the future of the ROH tag team division. Tonight, however, was not their night as Albright and Ciampa proved to work well together as Rhett Titus eventually tapped to Albright's Crowbar. (RATING: 52)

WINNER: THE EMBASSY

 

JAY LETHAL -VS- "THE PRODIGY" MIKE BENNETT

This match featured some good action, but the crowd never really got behind them. Bennett continues to shine as a heel, and Truth Martini only helps his act (more so than the other members of the House of Truth). These two took it close to the television time limit, but in the end Lethal picked up the win with a Lethal Combination. (RATING: 57)

WINNER: JAY LETHAL

 

MAIN EVENT

ROH WORLD TITLE MATCH

CM PUNK © -VS- JIMMY JACOBS

For the second week in a row, CM Punk shows up to defend his ROH World title. Somewhat surprisingly, it is Jimmy Jacobs who chooses not to follow the Code of Honor at the beginning of the bout; Punk seems to find his refusal of a handshake amusing. The two got the crowd going relatively quickly, and Jacobs looked more tenacious in the ring than he has since returning to Ring of Honor. His tenacity is not enough, however, as CM Punk picks up the win with a Go2Sleep in a relatively standard title defense. (RATING: 79)

WINNER: CM PUNK

 

-- After the match, as he is handed the ROH World title, CM Punk grabs the microphone from the ring announcer. "Let me remind you, Mr. Cornette. . . you may make the rules, but I follow my own," Punk says, kicking Jacobs in the head. "Those who walk with me follow their own rules as well, and we are here to unleash HELL on Ring of Honor!" As Punk talks, Kevin Steen has made his way out to the ring! Steen proceeds to put the boots to Jimmy Jacobs before spiking him to the mat with a Package Piledriver.

 

As Punk continues to talk, Steen adds insult to injury by putting the boots to Jacobs some more and slapping him around as he writhes on the mat.

 

"The front office has already officially informed, and I'm going to tell all of you people right now. . . Ring of Honor is going to have to do without CM Punk. . ." he says, letting some tension build as the crowd rumbles. "I will not be gracing your television screens for the next two weeks, because I will be in Japan defending another part of my Chicago Triple Crown, the Dream Gate World title, for Dragon Gate Pro Wrestling. But in the meantime, I want to leave all of you good people something to keep me fresh in your minds until I return. . ."

 

Steen holds Jacobs up, and Punk levels him with the ROH World title! By this time, ROH Executive Producer Jim Cornette has made his way out near the entrance ramp; he is still on crutches, and he doesn't dare get near the ring. All he can do is yell at Punk and Steen from down the aisle.

 

"Next month, we cross a new line," Punk says, motioning to himself and Steen. "CM Punk and Kevin Steen. . . versus Jimmy Jacobs and Steve Corino. You want us gone, Jimmy? They beat us, I'll surrender the title and go. I don't even want anything in return i. . . WHEN. . . we win; but, if somehow, by the skin of their teeth, Ring of Honor's resident changed men can topple The Best In The World, and The Antichrist of Pro-Wrestling. . . we'll go quietly into the night. See you soon. . ."

 

Punk drops the mic, he and Steen yelling back and forth with Cornette as we go off the air.

Williams is accompanied by Prince Nana and Princess Mia, Nana insisting that he be able to hold the title during Williams' defenses from now on. Lethal does a little shtick at the beginning with Princess Mia to get the crowd laughing, and Williams gets the jump on him before the bell to get the match started. Both competitors had time to shine during the bout, and it looked like either man could take home the victory at any point. As the 15-minute time limit drew nearer, Nana became more involved in distracting Lethal when he got the upperhand. Eventually, after Lethal landed an elbow drop from the top, Nana got onto the apron to cause a distraction and, in all of the chaos ensuing, the time limit expired. (RATING: 60)

This was a hard-hitting affair from the very beginning, as Richards showed the skill that led him to the ROH World title and Albright showed exactly why Prince Nana brought him in as The Embassy's enforcer. Albright took the upperhand for a while, and when it looked like Richards was starting to mount a comeback, Nana stepped in to keep things going for his enforcer. When this started to happen a second time, Nana was caught and ejected from ringside! This leveled the playing field, and allowed Richards to make a comeback and pick up the win! (RATING: 70)

CM PUNK: OUTLAW OR INSIDE MAN?

In this, the age of the internet, I'm shocked that CM Punk continues to set the wrestling world on fire with this outlaw storyline that has seen him visit Dragon Gate in Japan and Ring of Honor here in the States with the WWE Title around his waist. It would seem obvious that, in some way, Punk is still under contract with World Wrestling Entertainment or certainly an injunction would have been filed to keep him off of, at the very least, ROH's nationally syndicated television show with their belt in his possession. But that has not been the case, and if indeed he is still under contract with Vince McMahon, then you have to wonder what McMahon is giving Ring of Honor and Dragon Gate to play along with this scheme.

 

Punk is currently in possession of three major World titles, and has defended both his Dragon Gate and Ring of Honor World titles several times. However, he has yet to have a WWE title defense since leaving the company and that seems to be another telling sign-- I think he would be claiming to defend the title if he really had left the company. On WWE television, Punk hasn't been mentioned once, not even after his unannounced exchange with Triple H at the recent Comic-Con event; the WWE champion, according to the RAW roster on their website, is Alberto Del Rio after defeating John Cena at SummerSlam.

 

Ring of Honor have always held a respectful relationship with WWE, so it makes sense they would allow Punk to appear for the company. Just as Vince McMahon helped ECW out behind the scenes with money, CM Punk's appearance in Ring of Honor was conveniently timed with the debut of their new show on Sinclair Broadcasting and his presence has helped them garner high numbers for what is considered "local programming" in the Sinclair markets. WWE has never worked with Dragon Gate in the past, but it makes sense that All-Japan and New Japan might turn Vince McMahon down if his only motivation for allowing Punk to appear for them was in furthering his own angles. Like ROH, Dragon Gate is a smaller promotion who would probably be more than happy just to have Punk appear on their cards and drive up attendance.

 

But, here's the thing-- the fact that I am even writing this article is the beauty of this story. It's been a long time since fans couldn't simply fire up the internet and find out what's really going on behind the scenes. Is Punk still under contract with WWE? Did he convince management to let him go the route of Brian Pillman, leaving the company with promises of coming back a bigger star with more heat? Or did Punk really get tired of being mistreated and leave? My guess is that no one knows other than Punk himself. . . the perception is that he is a free man now, but an outlaw. Even if he is under contract, will he further follow in the step of Brian Pillman and double cross McMahon the way the Loose Cannon did Eric Bischoff?

 

This is kayfabe for the new era of wrestling, and I, for one, love it.

Kevin Steen's issues with Steve Corino and Jimmy Jacobs predate CM Punk showing up in Ring of Honor. After losing to El Generico at Final Battle 2010, Steen had agreed to never again compete in Ring of Honor. However, this summer Corino & Jacobs tried to help Steen return to ROH after being convinced that, like them, he was a changed man. What happened at Best In The World is now an infamous event in the history of Ring of Honor and seemed to cement the front office's decree that Kevin Steen would not be allowed to compete in Ring of Honor. Then CM Punk came back to Ring of Honor and he has been followed by Steen since showing up.

The stakes in this match are high: should Corino and Jacobs emerge victorious, then not only will Kevin Steen's banishment from Ring of Honor stand but CM Punk has also agreed to surrender the ROH World title and "go quietly in the night." If Punk and Steen win, then Ring of Honor will officially reinstate Kevin Steen.

Provided that Homicide can finish making his way through the other members of Prince Nana's Embassy before Crossing A New Line, a match between The Notorious 187 and Nana's bodyguard Rhino is being planned for our next iPPV. Just to clear up any confusion, there are still two weeks of TV (episodes #5 & #6) before Crossing A New Line. I might have jumped the gun on posting the card a little, but I was so happy with the layout I wanted to go ahead and share it since there weren't really any spoilers in the line-up.

 

I will probably get the next episode of TV up sometime tomorrow (unless I get the itch to do it tonight). So prediction time is limited for anyone who still wants to get in on predictions for episode #5.

THE BRISCOES -VS- FUTURESHOCK (ADAM COLE & KYLE O'REILLY)

These two teams open the show, with The Briscoes showing their roughhouse style and playing to the crowd about wanting the ROH Tag Team titles. Cole & O'Reilly, using their new tag name for the first time, managed to get in a few good-looking spots but simply couldn't overcome the veteran Briscoes. (RATING: 49)

WINNER: THE BRISCOES

 

-- Prince Nana comes out to the ring, accompanied by Princess Mia and his personal bodyguard, Rhino.

 

NANA -- Homicide. . . Homicide, my friend, you must think that you are so close that you can almost taste it, yes? You must believe that you are only two steps away from my War Machine, Rhino. Steve Corino enters the arena, looking a little worse for wear after his attack weeks ago. He heads to the ring with a limp and an almost glassy look in his eye, but he has a competitive smirk on his face. Corino takes off his ring jacket and rolls into the ring, standing up and waving Rhino on and saying, "Let's do this!"

 

RHINO w/ PRINCE NANA -VS- STEVE CORINO

Corino looks good at the start, getting the upperhand after a lock-up and working Rhino over for a while. Then The Man Beast turns the tides after rebounding off the ropes, and from that moment on Corino looks like a man lost inside of the ring. It doesn't take long for Rhino to nearly break him in half with a Gore and pick up the win. (RATING: 64)

WINNER: RHINO

 

-- Corino looks battered and is barely moving in the ring; medics are coming out to check on him as we head to commercial.

 

EDDIE EDWARDS w/ TRUTH MARTINI -VS- SHELTON BENJAMIN

We haven't seen much of Shelton Benjamin or his tag team partner Charlie Haas in singles competition since joining Ring of Honor. Edwards came out looking ****y and more than game to go hold-for-hold with Benjamin. These two really got the crowd heated up and into the action with one of the most exciting bouts seen yet in the new television era. Benjamin looked to have the win secured, but Edwards sprang back and picked up the submission with an Achille's lock. (RATING: 75)

WINNER: EDDIE EDWARDS

 

THE KINGS OF WRESTLING -VS- DAVEY RICHARDS AND COLT CABANA

The Kings picked up heat in this match by constantly having Chris Hero tag out whenever he wound up in the ring with Davey Richards and that really got the crowd going. These four put on a great tag bout, Richards and Cabana working well together and Cabana looking better in the ring than he has in a while. Near the end of the match, Hero and his loaded elbow pad finally wound up in the ring with Richards and Hero picked up the victory after a devastating elbow shot. After the match, Hero taunted Richards that the same thing will happen at Crossing A New Line.(RATING: 73)

WINNER: KINGS OF WRESTLING

 

-- A video promo is shown of ROH World Champion CM Punk, highlighting his ROH career, his shocking return to the company, and his recent alliance with Kevin Steen.

 

HOMICIDE -VS- "THE EMBASSY ENFORCER" BRENT ALBRIGHT w/ PRINCE NANA

The crowd was hot for this one right from the get-go as official Todd Sinclair, who had officiated last week's main even between Davey Richards and Albright and had to eject Nana from ringside, throws Nana out before the match even begins! Nana is livid as he is forced to leave the arena while the crowd eats it up. Homicide and Albright had a decent match with Albright in the driver's seat for most of the fight. Homicide eventually mounted the comeback and gets himself one step closer to Rhino and Prince Nana. (RATING: 66)

WINNER: HOMICIDE

 

OVERALL RATING: 67
