ThatChizzle
I use Rarzilla Free UnRar. Here is a link for it http://download.cnet.com/RarZilla-Free-Unrar/3000-2250_4-10647724.html
crayon
7zip is also a good one which will handle a variety of formats (which you may come across in your time here) including rar and zip http://www.7-zip.org/

BHK1978
I often wonder why mods RAR their mods. Isn't it easier to put files in a ZIP folder? What exactly is the benefit of putting stuff in a RAR file?

What exactly is the benefit of putting stuff in a RAR file? And I don't know how everyone else rars things, but for me it's just as easy to create a rar file as it is create a zip file. Recently I've been using zips since it seems to be more common, but I have to admit that I just prefer rars myself (don't ask me why... some weird personal bias I expect)
Kijar
I prefer the simplicity of extracting zip files, but whichever the modmaker uses is their choice, if they're gonna make a mod then they should chose how to upload it.
Hive
Once upon a time, I switched from *zip to *.rar for a good reason. I must admit, however, that I have long since forgotten said reason.
fullMETAL
RAR has better compression than ZIP, and 7z (the native format of 7zip, which was linked above) has better compression than RAR but is a bit less user-friendly. RAR and ZIP, but not 7z, can also be loaded into CDisplay (that Comic Book Viewer program thing) and any images present will display for you.
