ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP

In November 1993 the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was formed by businessman Art Davie and noted Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master, Rorion Gracie, with the intention of there creation to stage a martial arts tournament, pitting practitioners of different martial arts styles against one another. However despite the instant success that the UFC enjoyed in it's infant years, the brutal and violent nature of the sport quickly drew the attention of the U.S. authorities, and in particular Senator John McCain who led the campaign to ban the UFC, which he labelled as "human co.ckfighting", from all fifty states in the U.S.

This high profile disapproval of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was to be disastrious for the promotion, with as many as 36 states immediately banning the sport, including the state of New York which remains completely against mixed martial arts to this very day. In response to the public backlash, the UFC increased it's cooperation with state athletic commissions and began to re-brand itself as a sport rather than a spectacle, with the introduction of weight classes and the addition of rules. These changes were to eventually prove pivotal as the sport gained official sanctioning in the state of New Jersey in September 2000.

The long battle to reform the sport and gain approval across the United States took it's toll on UFC backers SEG as they stood on the brink of collapse. This led to wealthy casino tycoons Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, as well as business associate Dana White purchasing the UFC for $2 million, an amount which would prove insignicant in comparision with the worth of the UFC 10 years on. But despite the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) appearing to turn the corner in terms of gaining acceptance as a legitimate sport, the promotion was still leaking money with parent company Zuffa, LLC recording extraordinary losses of $34 million in the first 3 years of there ownership of the UFC.

However the persistance of Zuffa, LLC would start to pay off as big fights featuring Tito Ortiz, Ken Shamrock, Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell, as well as the introduction of reality tv show, "The Ultimate Fighter" (TUF) caused a surge in popularity with interest growing and pay-per-view numbers booming. From that point onwards the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) would continue to go from strength to strength with the acquisition of the "Pride Fighting Championships" in 2007, UFC 100 setting pay-per-view records in 2009 with a buyrate of 1.6 million, not to mention shattering attendance records with 55,000 people attending UFC 129 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 2011.

And as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heads towards it's 18th year anniversary, a recently announced broadcast deal with major tv network FOX, in addition to UFC programming already being broadcast in over 130 countries, reaching 430 million homes worldwide, there is no doubt that the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is the fastest-growing sports brand in the world!

ESPN MMA Pound-for-pound Power Rankings

ESPN MMA POUND-FOR-POUND POWER RANKINGS

Dana White didn't mince his words - in his mind, the No. 2 pound-for-pound fighter going is Frankie Edgar. And after Edgar's performance against previously unbeaten Gray Maynard, it's hard to argue. Especially when you get into the literal definition of the distinction. As a smaller 155-er who'd be much better oriented as a featherweight, he is pound-for-pound one of the game's best. Nobody gets the most out of his frame than Edgar.

Maybe he would be the best, if it weren't for Anderson Silva, who has never lost in the UFC. For all that he has accomplished in the sport, Silva will be the No. 1 P4P fighter going until somebody comes along to knock him off the perch. Could that man be Sonnen? Sonnen certainly thinks so. And he doesn't mind telling you about it.

Jon Jones continues to climb after his victory over Quinton Jackson, but he may find himself at an impasse in the rankings until one of the guys above him loses. Georges St. Pierre can solidify himself as the consensus No. 2 with a victory over the always-game Carlos Condit at UFC 137, and Gilbert Melendez is crashing in on Edgar as the next Big Challenge. Dominick Cruz broke his hand early and then broke Demetrious Johnson's will over the course of five rounds to make it 10 in a row, proving that he belongs right there among today's greats. And Aldo? Not too shabby against Kenny Florian.

ESPN MMA HEAVYWEIGHT POWER RANKINGS

As far as Strikeforce goes, there is a sense of confusion surrounding the heavyweight division. With the grand prix coming to a halt and the heavyweight title vacant, it's unclear what the future holds. Especially for the original grand prix finalists, Daniel Cormier, who rockets north in the Power Rankings following a first-round TKO win over Antonio Silva, and Josh Barnett, who made easy work of Sergei Kharitonov.

Perhaps overshadowing all of this is the news that the UFC has signed reigning Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem, and that his first fight will be against former champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 141. They don't get much bigger than that. For those that accuse Overeem of fighting slouches, things are about to change. And the question of Lesnar's health will come into play as well. A lot of mystery to unravel at the end of 2011. Overeem and Lesnar sit at No. 3 and No. 4 in the rankings, with the winner getting a crack at the belt.

And speaking of belts, UFC champion Cain Velasquez and challenger Junior dos Santos are just weeks away from there scrap as they headline the promotion's first ever event on FOX.

ESPN MMA LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT POWER RANKINGS

It looked and felt like a mismatch in the months leading up, but Jon Jones finally got around to solidifying himself as the UFC's 205-pound champion by defending the strap against Quinton Jackson. Was it easy? No, not exactly. But it was still a fairly lopsided win for Bones, enough that postfight conversation turned to what he might do in the heavyweight division or against the sport's best, Anderson Silva - hypotheticals usually reserved for hardly vincible types in need of a challenge.

But he won't need to migrate to another division to find that. Instead Jones will enter the octagon for the fourth time this year when he takes on Lyoto Machida in December. As for the original opponent, Rashad Evans? Well his luck continues to go from bad to worse as he is once again forced to pass up on a title fight due to an injury. Whether he chooses to wait around for the winner of Jones/Machida or take another fight in the meantime remains to be seen.

Meantime, it's a homecoming for Dan Henderson, who returns from his Strikeforce run with a shiny belt, a souvenir from Russia and a fresh head of steam. He'll face Mauricio Rua at UFC 139 for the right to fight for the belt. Which means that Muhammed Lawal is in the lurch while Strikeforce looks around for an opponent. Will he follow Hendo to the UFC? Stay tuned.

ESPN MMA MIDDLEWEIGHT POWER RANKINGS

For all the work Brian Stann did to arrive at what seemed like the most reluctant pairing of admirers in UFC history, everything went for naught when Chael Sonnen threw the singlet at him. Stann was never able to engage Sonnen in a stand-up battle the way he did Jorge Santiago and Chris Leben, and all suspicions of his wrestling being his downfall were realized. Sonnen never hesitated in dumping Stann to the canvas and making him fight from his back. Sonnen remains a determined No. 2.

As for Silva, he is the top fighter not only at 185-pounds but the world over. If he draws Sonnen next (as is presumed), it will be a vastly intriguing fight with plenty of newly worded queries. Sonnen was the only one to drag Silva into the deepest part of the pool, yet the feat was tainted when he turned up with high testosterone levels. Of course, Silva prevailed anyway with the late-fight submission to make it one of the most epic battles in recent memory. All of that combines for a compelling back-story.

Who's on the move up? Mark Munoz is steadily gaining ground, and if he gets by Chris Leben at UFC 138 he'll have a pretty good résumé to pass around in lobbying for a title shot. He'll have to hope that Dan Henderson relents on his desire to cameo at middleweight for a rematch with Silva. And Vitor Belfort? Cung Le would have been a fun notch, and his request for Sonnen is falling on deaf ears - the winner of Leben/Munoz might be on the cards.

ESPN MMA WELTERWEIGHT POWER RANKINGS

If you thought the lightweight division was top-loaded with contenders, you might want to cast an eye over what's going on at 170-pounds. As usual, it's Georges St. Pierre and everyone else. Right now, though, the top half of everyone else looks like a who's who of challengers to the long-reigning welterweight champion. We all know about Nick Diaz, and we all know what happened to Nick Diaz's shot by now. But then there's Diaz's new opponent B.J. Penn, the perennial No. 2 Jon Fitch, and the fighter who now gets Diaz's chance at GSP - Carlos Condit. That's four imminent challengers lurking.

And that doesn't even mention Jake Ellenberger, who crashed through Jake Shields at UFC Fight Night 25 in just 53 seconds. Ellenberger takes a leap in this month's Power Rankings, while Shields - who was fighting with a heavy heart with the passing of his father/mentor Jack Shields - takes a dive. Meanwhile, Rory MacDonald continues to make waves in the division after beating Mike Pyle, Ben Askren remains unbeating, and Anthony Johnson is on the cusp after knocking out Charlie Brenneman.

ESPN MMA LIGHTWEIGHT POWER RANKINGS

It's been a full year since we've had to contemplate anything other than Gray Maynard for Frankie Edgar. How crazy has this series been? The fact that nobody is talking about the overall series being 1-1-1 tells you everything, but consider the carbon nature of the third fight to the second. Once again Maynard overwhelmed Edgar with main street uppercuts that left him staggered, reeling and in survival mode. Once again in between the first and second round he revitalized and began to outbox Maynard with movement and inside/outside striking. The big difference came in the fourth round, when he landed the big shot that was so elusive in previous encounters. The Maynard thing is settled. At long last. He's filed away in history (for now).

As for all the lightweights who were getting short shrift while things played out? Lots of flux. Melvin Guillard was one of the most-talked about contenders in the division, but his personal request of fighting Joe Lauzon in Houston backfired. He drops in this month's Power Rankings, and Lauzon now carries renewed intrigue. Gilbert Melendez was primed for a unfication showdown with Edgar but now looks likely to remain in Strikeforce for the foreseeable future. If that's the case, then the Clay Guida/Ben Henderson winner will likely draw Edgar next.

It didn't go as Kenny Florian hoped, but at least in his third title shot - nearly five years after his first against Sean Sherk at UFC 64 - wasn't entirely one-sided. Florian had his moments against Jose Aldo, and did his best to slow the blasting cap from blowing up by forcing control on the fence. Yet, when Aldo got room, he was able to tag Florian with lunging jabs and swift combos. In other words, Florian had some of the answers, but not enough to pass the test. He falls this month in the Power Rankings, while Aldo retains the No. 1 spot.

Meanwhile, Erik Koch continues to prove he's a viable contender to Aldo's throne. He handily beat TUF 12 winner Jonathan Brookings in New Orleans to make it four wins in a row. His one loss was to Chad Mendes, who has bided his time for the crack at the belt, and now looks poised to wrest it away. And if you didn't see Pat Curran's indelicate handling of Marlon Sandro, you missed out on one of 2011's best knockouts. Curran's trajectory is northbound in the featherweight rankings, while Sandro checks out.

ESPN MMA BANTAMWEIGHT POWER RANKINGS

Dominick Cruz was thrown a curveball by Demetrious Johnson, who made him fight to a different tune for much of their five-round affair. It didn't matter that Cruz broke his hand early in the fight. The end result? He swept two judge's scorecards and won the third, 49-46. Making it 10 in a row for the "Dominator".

So who will Cruz get next? That's an interesting question. Urijah Faber, who gave Cruz a pretty good scrap in July, will fight Brian Bowles at UFC 139 in San Jose. The winner of that tilt will likely be lined up for the bantamweight champion. Faber would love nothing more than a trilogy fight, which would double as a rubber match - they are 1-1 against each other. Bowles wouldn't mind a chance to exact revenge against Cruz either, after meekly conceding the bantamweight title over to Cruz in March 2010.

Masakatsu Ueda padded his casualty list by escaping Royler Gracie, and Brad Picket returns to action on Nov. 05 against Renan Barao. As for Joseph Benavidez? He's in divisional limbo until the flyweight division is added to the UFC. That goes ditto for Mighty Mouse, who did what he could against Cruz and still came up a country mile shy.

GONZAGA, HAGUE AND MORE RETURN TO THE UFC HEAVYWEIGHT FOLD

UFC president Dana White has announced that the promotion have strengthened there heavyweight talent pool with the addition of several former UFC fighters to the roster. Perhaps the biggest name on the list of returnees is that of former title contender, Gabriel Gonzaga! Following a string of inconsistent performances, Gonzaga found himself released and contemplating retirement from the sport. However a decision to fight on and a subsequent submission victory in his first fight outside the UFC was enough to seal his return to the promotion.

Also on there way back to the UFC heavyweight ranks is Tim Hague, who could be the first fighter in UFC history to be signed for a fourth time. Like Gonzaga, Hague also considered retirement from MMA following his release from the UFC at the beginning of the year. However a first-round submission win over Vince Lucero has earned him another opportunity inside the octagon.

Another fighter who has fought his way back to the UFC is Sean McCorkle. The internet tough-guy was cut by the UFC following back-to-back defeats to Stefan Struve and Christian Morecraft, however he has since earned two first round submission victories to book his place back on the UFC roster.

Two fighters who didn't have to work so hard to earn there spot back in the UFC were former TUF contender Jon Madsen and high-level grappler Rolles Gracie. Despite being released following losses, both Madsen and Gracie have been giving a reprieve after UFC official's decided to bring them back as a way of bolstering the heavyweight division.
