by <em><strong>Brint Williams</strong></em> – PW Candle Columnist</p><p> </p><p>

A surprising second straight week in a dark match for Tyson Baine as <strong>The Titans</strong> prolonged the agony on The Hillbillys until the 8:30 mark when T-Rex made Al the Hillbilly submit to the Jurassic Crush. Baine had the show-closing moment last week in an angle with Enygma so it seems pretty unusual that he wasn’t used on the main card. We might have to start wondering if he’s in the doghouse for some reason. (56/C-)</p><p> </p><p>

Another solid tag-team bout as <strong>The Towers of Power</strong> defeated Savage Fury at 7:38 after Mick Muscles hit the Bulldozer Powerbomb on Java. (56/C-)</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r203/gratefulcowboy/pw%20candle/USPW.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p>

A red carpet rolled out from the back and <strong>“Luscious” Larry Lawrence</strong> walked down to the ring to open the show and received some mild boos from the near sell-out crowd at the Huntsville Fairgrounds. In his Mexican accent, he said he was going to show everyone exclusive scenes from his new movie: <em>The Best American</em>. </p><p> </p><p>

The monitors then show Lawrence dressed in a US Army uniform being decorated with a medal by the President of the United States. </p><p> </p><p>

“For all of your hard work, you are, truly, the best American,” says the President.</p><p> </p><p>

“Thank you amigo,” says Lawrence in a heavy Mexican accent, “I love America, and this country as well.” </p><p> </p><p>

Boos rang out from the crowd. The monitors turned off and Lawrence smiled and soaked in the booing as if it were adulation. He said that as everyone saw last week when he pushed USPW World Champion <strong>Enygma</strong> to the limit, that he – Larry Lawrence - will be a major force in USPW’s future. Lastly, he promised to do whatever he could to fight for Ameirca and that brought even more boos from the audience. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>USPW Television Championship</strong></p><p>

<span style="font-size:12px;">Captain USA vs. Andre Jones ©</span></p><p>

I guess losing two matches in a row gets you a TV title shot these days, as a random first title defense for <strong>Andre Jones</strong> pitted him against a man on a losing streak in Captain USA. As you might expect, there was virtually no heat despite the solid in-ring action. Jones makes his first defense of the TV strap by using the ropes for leverage at 6:03 for the tainted win. A better opening match than last week, but again not as good as the dark matches. (48/D+) </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>USPW World Tag-Team Championship</strong></p><p>

<span style="font-size:12px;">The People’s Team © vs. Trouble at the Picnic</span></p><p>

A fantastic ring entrance by the debuting heel tag-team Trouble at the Picnic as they came out with baskets and violently threw sandwiches at the crowd as they made their way from the back. A pretty solid match in the ring but people didn’t know what to think of Antix and Ant-Man. In the end it was a pretty clinical title defense for <strong>The People’s Team</strong> when Fredie Datsun pinned Ant Man after a Patriot Press at 6:30. (47/D+)</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:12px;">The Force vs. Bruce the Giant</span></p><p>

I mean, it was probably as good of a match as we’re going to get between these two. This was another <strong>Bruce the Giant</strong> match where the lack of selling is obvious when you’re watching him for 10 minutes. It was the sneaky heel finish as Bruce threw his brass knuckles to The Force and Baby Jamie noticed and DQ’ed The Force, having not seen Bruce toss the weapon to him. (55/C-)</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Commissioner Doom</strong> and <strong>Sam Strong</strong> are shown in Strong’s office backstage deep in discussion. </p><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:12px;">Chris Caulfield vs. Jumbo Jackson</span></p><p>

<strong>Jumbo Jackson</strong> picked up a surprising victory here at the 10:26 mark after a run-in by Anger while ref Robbie Sanchez was distracted by Shane Sneer. With Sneer out of the announce booth for manager duties, you could really hear the good chemistry between Danny Jillefski and Queen Emily. Jillefski briefly hints at a possible change coming to the announce crew after <em>Stars, Stripes and Slams!</em> (59/C-)</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:12px;">James Justice & Nicky Champion vs. Peter Valentine & The Weapon</span> </p><p>

<strong>Justice & Champion</strong> dominated this match over USPW National Champion Peter Valentine and The Weapon. This one might have been some payback booking for Valentine mouthing off about not being used on TV last week. The Weapon eventually took the loss, though, when Justice hit a Liberation Slam at 10:04. Valentine took a lot of punishment. (59/C-) </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>MAIN EVENT!</strong></p><p>

<span style="font-size:12px;">Enygma vs. Wolf Hawkins</span></p><p>

This was the best match on <em>American Wrestling</em> so far this year - a non-title clash between USPW World Champion Enygma and former TCW International Champion Wolf Hawkins that had the air of a legitimate athletic exhibition. It was a great match with a lot of back-and-forth and at the 16-minute mark the action spilled to the outside and Enygma and Hawkins got so carried away hauling off on one another that they ignored Baby Jamie’s count and were both counted out. The two men, realizing what happened, went back into the ring as if they were going to finish the match themselves. (80/B)</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Tyson Baine</strong> and <strong>T-Rex</strong> stormed the ring after the match though and prevented anything from continuing. They beat down both <strong>Enygma</strong> and <strong>Hawkins</strong> and left them battered in the ring as the show went off the air. </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Overall:</strong> 73/B- </p><p>

<strong>Notes:</strong> <em>A decent show. USPW still has a long way to go to develop the undercard. Maybe if they start using their main stars on the show and not in dark matches there would be a better flow to the show and things would make more sense. As it stands it seems to me that they’ve got a ton of work to do on next week’s American Wrestling to set things up more clearly for Stars, Stripes and Slams! I do, however, think the last 20 minutes of the show were strong, and they at least had Tyson Baine involved in an angle again if he wasn’t going to have a match. I hope with the show-ending attack that they are leading to a very cool matchup – Enygma & Wolf Hawkins vs. The Titans! They could probably headline the PPV with that. No women’s matches this week – you have to wonder if there is a re-tooling of the women’s division going on behind-the-scenes. We shall see. USPW has officially announced one match for the PPV – Chris Caulfield vs. Jumbo Jackson and Anger in a handicap match as Caulfield has requested the match so that he can keep his eyes on both men at once.</em> </p><p>

<strong>Notes:</strong> Thank you again for the predictions. I really do appreciate it, especially since I'm trying to book this pretty "true" so it's interesting to see where I diverge from the predictions and helps gives me ideas for where to go in the future. </p><p> </p><p>

The overall Prediction Results for January are awfully close with one more<em> American Wrestling</em> followed directly by <em>Stars, Stripes and Slams!</em> left this month. I think we'll put double the value on correct PPV predictions so it's not too late to join in the January fun! Otherwise, you can wait until (in-game) February and start with a clean slate. </p><p> </p><p>

Still trying to work out "prizes," if you have any suggestions please let me know. There's always the threat of signed photos of PW Torch writers. Although I haven't brought cranky old-timer Fred Jones (PW Candle Senior Columnist) back yet (probably after the PPV), only Brint Williams is available so far so that's not that great. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

USPW REPORT - WEEK 4, JANUARY 2010

By Brint Williams - PW Candle Columnist

“Trouble at the Picnic is here to stay. We may not win now, or in the future, but I assure you that we will eventually win at some point. The best thing is that we both hate picnics so this is like a natural thing for us, you dig? The sight of a plaid tablecloth makes me go bonkers!”

-A confused sounding Ant-Man on his new USPW tag-team with Antix.

“It’s time for me to start earning back some respect. For weeks now it seems that I’ve been a target, and even though that may be true, I’m being the bigger man and making the challenge to both Jumbo Jackson and Anger at Stars, Stripes and Slams! Rest assured, ‘The Hardcore American’ will prevail.”

-Chris Caulfield on his mixed in-ring results in 2010.

“The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind.”

-Thomas Paine, Author, Patriot

January Ratings on Sports America:

Week 1: 1.33

Week 2: 1.48

Week 3: 1.46

Another solid showing for USPW in the third week of January, although there are some critics who say that much of the show was propped up by the novelty main event of Enygma vs. Total Championship Wrestling superstar Wolf Hawkins.

USPW has one more episode of American Wrestling before Stars, Stripes and Slams! and I expect a lot of things to be ironed out on Wednesday prior to the PPV on Thursday.

USPW going for a Thursday night PPV is a pretty interesting strategy. They claim that in 2010, in the age of DVR and on-demand, that holding a PPV in the middle of the week as opposed to the weekend would make no difference as to the total buy rate, and may actually help considering that the likely demographic is at home on Thursday evenings. Remains to be seen. This may just be a publicity stunt to bring more attention to the event but I guess we’ll see how things play out.

I think that the loan deal with TCW for Wolf Hawkins has forced USPW to change their initial plans for “Luscious” Larry Lawrence. Hawkins will likely make his third and final loan appearance at Stars, Stripes and Slams! so maybe then we’ll see the focus shift back to Lawrence in February.

The first PPV of the Stanley “The Weapon” Fletcher era will be a good benchmark as to where the company is at right now so that we can gauge for improvement in the future. But I also think after looking closely at last week that Fletcher is going to have to do a better job of getting heat on the matches he’s booking outside of the Main Event otherwise he’s going to end up with a bunch of guys around the same level of overness that we won’t really be invested enough in to care about.

Once again women are left off of the main show. I’d now be surprised if there’s a women’s match at the PPV, and if there is it will certainly feel forced and thrown-together. I couldn’t tell you why Des Davids is getting a TV title shot, but he is. And I have no idea who you would consider a challenger for Peter Valentine’s National title going into the PPV. A huge match is being given away with virtually no fanfare when USPW World Champion Enygma faces T-Rex in a non-title match. Usually non-title matches go to the challenger, especially a challenger on a roll like T-Rex, but it would probably seem bad booking to have either man losing cleanly heading into the PPV.

Decided not to predict on preshow matches...

James Justice & Captain USA vs. The Towers of Power

Seems like Cap is eating a pin. 1st rule of USPW: it really is as obvious as it seems. And thats a good thing.

Savage Fury vs. Jumbo Jackson & Peter Valentine

Fury can be easily replaced even if they are pretty great. Jumbo is a great talent and Valentine is THE MAN. Any chance of pairing him with BSS?

Champion Force vs. Trouble at the Picnic

TatP are nowhere near THHEEEEEEEE FOOOOOOOORRRRCCCEEE yet

USPW Television Championship: Des Davids vs. Andre Jones ©

No point in this change

Chris Caulfield vs. “Luscious” Larry Lawrence

Larry needs to learn humility at the end of a bat

Enygma vs. T-Rex (non-title)

T-Rex can get pop back easier and Enygma is on a 10-yr contract. get him high quick

Wolf Hawkins vs. Tyson Baine

Tyson is challenger no. 1

USPW American Wrestling

Live Event Coverage!

January 2010, Week 4, Wednesday

Huntsville Fairgrounds (South East); 5,000 attendance (SELL-OUT!)

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r203/gratefulcowboy/pw%20candle/2009-04-07-businessman.jpg

by Brint Williams – PW Candle Columnist

Bruce the Giant and Giant Redwood looked awful teaming together in the first dark match. The crowd seems really tired of The Hillbillys gimmick, and shockingly there were some cheers when Redwood got the pin on Pete the Hillbilly after a Standing Splash at 7:40. Redwood was completely exhausted at the end of the match, and it showed. (46/D)

This contest between new USPW Women’s Division members Tamara McFly and Zoe Ammis was probably the worst thing we’ve seen in the month of January from USPW. Thank goodness it didn’t make it to air. Ammis, who we thought was going to be little more than a jobber, gets a forgettable win over McFly at 7:43 by pinfall after a Double Cross. This certainly isn’t the way you want the crowd to be feeling going into the final show before a PPV. (39/D-)

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r203/gratefulcowboy/pw%20candle/USPW.jpg

James Justice & Captain USA vs. The Towers of Power

For the first time this month USPW started their show directly in the ring with the opening match, and it looked like Captain USA was on his way to his first victory of 2010 on the heels of a high-energy performance from James Justice. But it would be Mick Muscles catching the Captain with an Atomic Boot out of nowhere for the pinfall victory at 5:53. I thought that the announcers did a very good job of establishing right up front that Stars, Stripes and Slams! is tomorrow night so results tonight, specifically any kind of lengthy or grueling contest, will hurt the chances of the participants at the PPV. A very good opening match and this has to establish The Towers of Power as slight favorites going into their tag title match tomorrow night against The People’s Team. (63/C)

Commissioner Doom came out next with a clipboard in his hands. He said that he’s been taking extensive notes on what’s been going on during American Wrestling over the last couple of weeks. He said that he’s been meeting both on-air as everyone knows, and behind-the-scenes, with Sam Strong. Doom said that he’s been watching the in-ring action and speaking individually with various workers. Doom continued that neither he or Strong likes what they’ve seen or heard one bit. He said that USPW needs to get back on track and away from the culture of cheating that has developed in early 2010. He finished by saying that come next week and the beginning of February, the Commissioner’s office was going to start handing out fines and other punishment for blatant rules violations.

Savage Fury vs. Jumbo Jackson & Peter Valentine

The scene switched back to the ring and there was some decent action here in this contest and a pretty good crowd to boot as Jumbo Jackson made this one his personal showcase, dominating Java with a Jumbo Avalanche and pinning him at 5:44. Peter Valentine was only in the ring once, briefly. You had the idea from the way that Jackson and manager Shane Sneer carried on at the beginning of the match that Jackson didn’t know why he was teamed with Valentine in the first place. Jackson appeared to deliberately stay away from letting Valentine play a major role in the match. (50/D+)

Champion Force vs. Trouble at the Picnic

I think the crowd was tired of seeing another tag-team match at this point in the show, and especially when it involved a brand-new team that has no heat or momentum. So you got what we had here – Nicky Champion getting the win for Champion Force over a lackluster Antix at 6:18 after a Hawkeye Hammer. Antix and Ant-Man really didn’t show well in this contest and if they’re not careful they’re going to make themselves irrelevant before their USPW careers even get off the ground. The Force, surprisingly, has really struggled to make an impression in January. (45/D)

USPW Television Championship

Des Davids vs. Andre Jones ©

Back in the first week of January, The People’s Team retained the USPW World Tag-Team Championship against the up-and-coming duo of Andre Jones and Darryl Devine when Freddie Datsun pinned Jones. In this contest, Datsun’s partner Des Davids gave it his all but fell just short when Jones used the ropes for leverage for a flash pin after a standard bodyslam at 5:59. I think they’re doing a decent job of getting Andre Jones over as a chicken-champion who needs to cheat to win, but are caught in two minds over whether to push him as a singles competitor or in his promising team with Devine. This was a good platform match to build toward a strong Main Event. (52/D+)

Enygma vs. T-Rex

This was supposed to be the second-to-last match on the card but was swapped with the Caulfield vs. Lawrence match with no explanation given. I was pretty surprised by the match, I didn’t think these two would give everything away on TV but they had a pretty good match, even if T-Rex was again visibly tiring by the end. Good action and a good crowd here that was invested in the match enhanced the atmosphere. Enygma eventually picked up the victory at 9:47 with an Enygma Variation after Tyson Baine came down to the ring and accidentally bashed T-Rex when Enygma ducked out of the way. (60/C)

Bruce the Giant confronted Sam Strong backstage as Strong was walking through the hallways. Bruce looked enraged and almost as if he was going to have a go at Strong. Strong said he didn't want any confrontations and that his fighting days were long behind him. Bruce took a long hard look at Strong and then asked him, quite out of nowhere, if the USPW owner thought he was going senile. Strong looked confused at the question, and Bruce shook his head and whispered "get some help, old man," in Strong's ear before he walked away.

Chris Caulfield vs. “Luscious” Larry Lawrence

There was good action in this one, but Larry Lawrence just isn’t over enough to have him co-Main Eventing when he’s got no momentum at this point in his USPW career, no matter how flashy he might be in the ring. This was an open contest and a classic contrast in styles of brawler vs. entertainer that surprisingly worked pretty well. This matchup could probably be built into a much bigger deal sometime down the line with some good booking. But in the meantime, Chris Caulfield needed a clean win going into the PPV and so he got one here at 9:47 after a Danger Drop. (59/C-)

MAIN EVENT!

Wolf Hawkins vs. Tyson Baine

This was a good match with great action and heat from the crowd. Despite what they’re trying to do with Hawkins being Enygma’s partner at the PPV, the crowd of course views him as an outsider from TCW and USPW management should have saw it coming that Tyson Baine would be cheered throughout. There was little sympathy for Hawkins when Baine got the win at 16:09 after hitting Hawkins with a roll of quarters thrown to him by Sheik Mustafa. Not your typical Main Event, but gives a nice little spotlight to Baine who will likely be the man to be top heel going into February. (75/B-)

T-Rex came out to celebrate with Tyson Baine and Sheik Mustafa in the ring as Wolf Hawkins made his way to the back on his own. Rex shoved the tired Hawkins down to the ground on the rampway as the two passed each other. Mustafa, to pretty good heat from the audience, said that The Titans were about to begin their reign of terror and take over United States Pro Wrestling. Mustafa said that tomorrow at Stars, Stripes and Slams! everyone in the world would see exactly what Baine & T-Rex were capable of. T-Rex said that earlier in the night Engyma proved that he couldn’t beat T-Rex cleanly, and that at the PPV he was going to do no favors in return for the World Champion.

Overall: 72/B-

Notes: This wasn’t the greatest show you could possibly have the night before a PPV, but it should do fine for the time being. The company is going to have to regroup quickly after the departure of Wolf Hawkins and, unless they’re planning some sort of three-on-one turn/attack against Enygma, it seems like Hawkins’ three-match loan deal will pass without much fanfare or lasting impression. I was surprised at the T-Rex loss, even if it’s a tainted win for Enygma because of the Tyson Baine interference. I didn’t think they’d have either man lose going into the PPV, especially considering the roll that T-Rex has been on, but apparently I was wrong. I think it’s way too early to read into anything regarding animosity between T-Rex and Baine based off what happened in the ring, but this might just be the very first incident in a long, eventual split. There are rumors that actually developed during the show itself that USPW is in negotiations with 31-year old 4C colour commentator Ted Ross to come in and be a face announcer. But according to sources MAW’s Marv Earnest has also expressed some interest in the position. The swapping of the Caulfield vs. Lawrence match with Enygma vs. T-Rex was a bad move, the World Champion should at least be in the co-Main Event in my opinion (especially when he’s helping headline the PPV), and I think the odd booking and switch there led to a flatter crowd than usual for the Main Event. And, since I’ve been asked, I listen to the broadcast of the show on my iPhone so I can hear the commentators, even though I’m there in person.

Notes: After ChrisKid started out the month strong, we've had two new weekly prediction champions back-to-back. With the PPV to finish the month of January, it's anyone's guess as to who will step up and take the overall January crown! PPV predictions are worth "more" so everyone's in contention for the next show. And, with the start of the next American Wrestling in February after the PPV, the monthly standings reset to crown a February champion so a good point for lurkers to jump in. ;)

Pretty good for Boltinho this week, the only one he missed was Jumbo Jackson's sustained push (even if teamed with Valentine) against Savage Fury. This is good news for me because seems like I'm making some sense with the booking, even if I still can't figure out where on the card to place some matches!

-Jumbo Jackson on his upcoming PPV match with Chris Caulfield.

January Ratings on Sports America:

Week 1: 1.33

Week 2: 1.48

Week 3: 1.46

Week 4: 1.49

USPW did an OK job on the last episode of American Wrestling leading into Stars, Stripes and Slams! and we’re probably in store for an uneven, if compelling, first PPV of the Stanley “The Weapon” Fletcher era.

As I’ve previously noted, some storylines are not getting the full treatment (Enygma vs. Tyson Baine) or are being ignored outright (Chris Caulfield vs. Bruce the Giant or James Justice vs. T-Rex). You have to think it’s only a matter of time before the USPW audience either gets confused, if they aren’t already, or loses interest because of a lack of compelling storylines.

Now, the ratings may suggest otherwise. USPW have been able to hover around the 1.5 mark for the last three weeks which is a nice sign. But the cynics say that all of the bounce can be attributed to TCW’s Wolf Hawkins appearing on USPW broadcasts. So I guess as we move on into February and Hawkins returns to TCW we’ll be able to see if there’s a dropoff or if USPW can capitalize and keep many of those new viewers watching American Wrestling on a regular basis.

The January PPV has been built around the team of USPW World Champion Enygma, teaming with TCW star Wolf Hawkins, against The Titans – Tyson Baine & T-Rex. Baine beat Hawkins last week by blatantly cheating, and T-Rex shoved Hawkins down on the rampway at the end of the show. I think we’re being set up here for Enygma’s team to lose with Hawkins taking the loss on his way back to Total Championship Wrestling. What will be interesting to see is who will get the win for The Titans and how long this match will go since T-Rex seems to start to labor around the 10-minute mark.

Chris Caulfield has been plagued by The Sneer Corporation’s cheating ways in January, and he’s called out the two men who have made his life miserable – Jumbo Jackson and Anger in a handicap match. This has been a nice organic feud that seemed to come out of nowhere and I think it’s been booked pretty well if we’re expecting a quick blowoff here so Caulfield can get focused on Bruce the Giant (or someone else). But Jackson has been on a roll, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him somehow come out of this looking to continue a program with Caulfield.

For all of you stat-trackers, this is the first time USPW will be venturing out of its home area in 2010. It should help lend to the big-time feel of the event. There are also rumors that Sam Strong has invested in the $15,000 range to beef up the PPV set. More matches will be added and card is subject to change.

The Force vs. The Weapon

Its USPW. Force has to win

Chris Caulfield vs. Jumbo Jackson & Anger

Seems like an Anger loss to me. Leading to a Jumbo turn and reappearance as Jumbo Squid!

The Way Things Should Be

By Fred Jones - PW Candle Senior Columnist

Let me tell you a thing or two about the way things should be right now for USPW heading into the first PPV of 2010: better.

Better all around. Better in every way.

Tag-team wrestling is supposed to be a focus of the new head booker guy. But when I look at the tag title matchup for Stars, Stripes and Slams! I really do pray that The Towers of Power don’t win the belts because who on earth are next in line? Savage Fury who have been jobbed out as frequently as The Hillbillys? Or will we be subject to another month of matches with Team Bland (Freddie Datsun & Des Davids) or a comedy run for Champion Force? USPW didn’t do a thing in the entire month of January to give me the impression that there’s a credible up-and-coming face duo in the organization.

I think it’s interesting that Darryl Davine is using the name Darryl Devine, and that USPW is trying to make a heel version of Team Bland by pairing him up with Television Champion Andre Jones. Still without a proper gimmick or motivation, I could see them blanding themselves to the belts come this spring.

I think USPW is in for a mess of a PPV. They’ve got Wolf Hawkins who is heel teaming with Enygma which is not going to do well in the Main Event. No one in the crowd wants to see Hawkins win anything anyway since he’s from TCW so pairing him with Enygma might not even be enough to save him. Maybe they should have made it a 6-Man and put him with Chris Caulfield and James Justice if they really wanted to try and get Wolf over as a face. Or maybe they have some lame angle planned where Wolf will get jumped so he’ll have more incentive to be a better partner for Enygma. Who knows.

This PPV shouldn’t be about Wolf Hawkins. It should be about USPW and, to me, it doesn’t feel like it is.

Back in my day, there were no two ways about it. When it was your last date in a particular territory or promotion you got ready to have your head handed to you. The only exception was when the promoter really liked your character and wanted to make a long-play for a big payday down the road, then sometimes you could squeak out with a win so that you lose next time you show up.

In a famous example of this, back in the 80s when the Louisiana Auditorium was a crown jewel in the South East and not the run-down thing it is today, the tough Boston powerhouse Herbert Clams took on a mean dockworker who called himself Mr. Plank. Now, Herbert Clams was a traveling sort of fella. He would show up, get some heat with a few cheap wins, and then get beat on his way out of town like clockwork. So in this particular fight, Clams was supposed to lose to Plank on his way out of town but Clams had taken a liking to Plank’s girlfriend, one Frieda Begonia. So, in order to impress Frieda, Clams worked the match as understood until the end, where he surprised Plank for the win. The whole building came apart. People were crying and gnashing their teeth. Distraught teenagers were throwing soft drinks and other beverages in the air. An old, fat biker sat there motionless, stunned. It was a real madhouse.

I don’t see any moments like that coming from Stars, Stripes and Slams! And that’s not the best of signs for USPW.

USPW talks about doing wrestling "the right way." They certainly do offer a certain way of presenting wrestling. But if they truly are going to do things the right way and truly grow and make inroads on the major wrestling promotions out there, they have to tell better stories than they did in January.

USPW Stars, Stripes and Slams! 2010

Live Event Coverage!

January 2010, Week 4, Thursday

Evanovich Riverside (Tri-State); 10,000 attendance (SELL-OUT!)

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r203/gratefulcowboy/pw%20candle/2009-04-07-businessman.jpg

by Brint Williams – PW Candle Columnist

When I entered the Evanovich Riverside there was a strange feeling inside the venue that was palpable immediately. As I made my way from the concourse to my seat, I was able to hear it more clearly. It was hate. Pure, blind, hate. The first warm-up match to USPW's first PPV of 2010 (and the first PPV of their new deal with U-Demand) was a complete disaster with Trouble at the Picnic and The Hillbillys battling each other in a terrible contest for what seemed like forever. There were blown spots, there was miscommunication, there was even a spot where Al the Hillbilly missed tagging Pete twice - simply missed tagging him with no interference from the opponents - before actually hitting Pete's hand on the third try. After loud, prolonged chants of “this is truly awful,” Antix hit a Murder on the Picnic Blanket on Al the Hillbilly at 8:29 to end one of the worst matches I’ve ever seen in my entire life. (8/F)

There was some solid action in the next dark match and for a crowd that was completely shot and down after what they had just seen they seemed to bounce back by the end of the match. Roy Edison and Giant Redwood did as best as they could under the circumstances, defeating Rich and Famous (Jackpot Jordan & Jake Idol) at the 8:02 point after Edison forced Jordan to submit to a Knee Lock. Some buzz in the arena about the apparent new signings of Edison, Jordan & Idol. (41/D)

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r203/gratefulcowboy/pw%20candle/USPWStarsStripesandSlams.jpg

A brief video promo aired opening the PPV and featuring highlights of USPW’s biggest stars – Enygma, Chris Caulfield, James Justice, Tyson Baine and T-Rex.

Military-style drumming played and Commissioner Doom came out from the back with the US Marines Tri-State Regional Drum & Bugle Corps. The musicians played a stirring, instrumental version of the Star Spangled Banner to kick things off to a great ovation from the crowd, but at some point during the song Commissioner Doom went missing without anyone seeing a thing.

Savage Fury vs. Andre Jones & Darryl Devine

This match was a solid contest with good action in the ring but a crowd that was just expecting something bigger from the opening match of a PPV. Devine got the win for Jones & Devine at 5:32 after he used the Devine Dream Drop on Tribal Warrior for the pin. Not much to say about this match, nothing great, nothing horrible. Maybe with Savage Fury losing again it shadows The People’s Team keeping the belts later in the show. (47/D+)

Tyson Baine and T-Rex confronted Wolf Hawkins backstage. They asked Hawkins that since it was his last night in USPW if he was going to go along with the plan to turn the Main Event tag-team match into a 3-on-1 match to beat down USPW World Champion Enygma. Shiek Mustafa said that Commissioner Doom was out of the way so everything was in place except for Hawkins. Hawkins thought long and hard, but eventually declined. This sent The Titans into a rage and they attacked Hawkins, brutalizing him for a few long minutes before Enygma came to make the save and drive Baine and T-Rex off. The Titans laughed manically as Enygma tended to Hawkins as the segment came to a close.

Captain USA vs. Bruce the Giant

I think I was in the minority in thinking this, but to me we got Bruce the Giant phoning in a squash match against Captain USA. The action was solid but unspectacular (considering the two contestants, that shouldn’t be a big surprise) and there was average heat from the crowd – mostly interested in seeing Bruce. The Captain has had a brutal start to 2010 and lost this one at 6:01 after a Giant Choke Slam. (52/D+)

Handicap Match!

Chris Caulfield vs. Jumbo Jackson & Anger

This match was a strange one to me in that I think that the story that the participants told was done really well, it’s just that the top-notch performance wasn’t there to back it up. Part of it had to do with Anger looking really off his game for whatever reason right from the start of the contest. Another part probably had to do with the fact that it was a Handicap Match and those are always kind of awkward to deal with in terms of creating and sustaining any flow. After about 5 minutes Caulfield tried to rectify this by appealing to Jackson and Anger to take turns facing him one-on-one in the true spirit of competition. Jackson & Anger agreed for a short while, but as soon as Caulfield got the upper hand on Anger, Jumbo Jackson intervened. Jackson took control and eventually hit Caulfield with a Jumbo Avalanche and got the victory at 10:26. After the match Shane Sneer celebrated with his men in the ring as Caulfield shook his head in disgust on his way to the back. Danny Jillefski and Queen Emily really blasted Caulfield from the announce table for being dumb enough to trust members of The Sneer Corporation in a match as important as this one. (56/C-)

USPW National Championship!

Nicky Champion vs. Peter Valentine ©

Peter Valentine looked sick or something as he came out for this match with Nicky Champion. In this one you had some periods of good action, and then periods where Peter Valentine would be in control. In the end it was Nicky Champion getting the shock win over Valentine after a Hawkeye Hammer at 9:36 to capture the USPW National Championship. (57/C-)

The Force vs. The Weapon

The Force needed a big win and this one should qualify even though The Weapon hasn’t really beaten anyone in a one-on-one contest yet in 2010. These two had met once before in a dark tag match at the beginning of the month, won by the team of The Weapon & Giant Redwood. In this one, The Force and The Weapon showed some chemistry, and that bodes well as their gimmicks and ring personas seem tailor-made for a program against one another. This one could be the official start of that, and The Force won clean at 12:10 after a Full Force. (61/C)

Alicia Strong was shown knocking on the door to Commissioner Doom’s office. She looked frustrated as the door remained closed. T-Rex appeared and said that the Commissioner is indisposed and wouldn’t be around tonight. Strong complained to T-Rex that there were no women’s matches booked for the PPV. T-Rex replied that he understands her pain but if she really feels that badly about it she should speak with her father. Otherwise, she should join The Titans and the new coalition they are building to take over USPW. T-Rex didn’t let her answer, instead he cut her off and walked away telling her to think about it first.

James Justice vs. “Luscious” Larry Lawrence

Justice and Lawrence benefitted from a crowd hot after the previous angle. Lawrence had movie clips from his latest movie The Best American playing during his prolonged opening which was ridiculous. Some good action here in this one but it was mostly a showcase win for James Justice against a good young opponent that can bump for him. Justice gets the clean victory by pin at 10:19 after a Liberation Slam. (64/C)

USPW World Tag-Team Championship!

The People’s Team © vs.The Towers of Power

It was pointed out to me that in the first six matches of the show, heels had won three and faces had won three. Now we had lucky match number seven which had been moved all the way to the co-Main Event spot perhaps as a signal to their renewed commitment to tag-team wrestling (despite what we saw in that first dark match). This one again didn’t have great action throughout – there was some good action and too many rest spots before Mick Muscles pinned Des Davids for the belts at 9:44 after a Bulldozer Powerbomb. This win was kind of expected given how The Towers of Power had looked recently but it certainly throws the tag division into chaos in the short-term as there are no credible challengers for them right now aside from The People’s Team. This marks the 5th time that Muscles and Rushmore have held the belts, breaking a tie with Savage Fury for the most ever. (64/C)

MAIN EVENT!

Enygma & Wolf Hawkins vs. The Titans

After 15 minutes of great action and, finally, a highly-involved crowd, Shiek Mustafa entered the ring and clobbered referee Robbie Sanchez. Tyson Baine and T-Rex then double-teamed Wolf Hawkins off the ring apron before turning their attention to Enygma. Tyson Baine hit a Hades Bomb on the USPW World Champion and T-Rex woke the referee in time for a 3-count at 15:31. The crowd was pretty shocked to see Enygma take the loss and Wolf Hawkins go out of USPW with little more than a whimper. This ended up being the best match of the night, but we’ve seen better Main Events recently on TV in my opinion. (69/C+)

As Sheik Mustafa, Tyson Baine, and T-Rex were celebrating their victory, Sam Strong came out and announced that next week on American Wrestling he was launching a full scale investigation into Commissioner Doom’s disappearance and that the responsible parties would be held responsible.

Overall: 72/B-

Notes: Meh. While I probably wouldn't order this show if I didn't have to, it wasn't a terrible way to open their 2010 PPV campaign. The angles helped a lot, again. The Commissioner Doom storyline was a nice way to sandwich the show, and it will be interesting to see exactly what happens and if there really are any lasting repercussions. It seems like it was Sheik Mustafa and The Titans behind Doom’s disappearance so maybe that’s a hint as to where that story will be headed. Nicky Champion got a surprising (to me) win over Peter Valentine. I thought the National Championship was surgically attached to Valentine’s waist. I guess this gives something to occupy both Champion and Valentine for the next couple of months. And new USPW World Tag-Team Champions were crowned with The Towers of Power winning their record 5th championship over The People’s Team. A lot seems to be invested in the tag division but I can’t see any other headlining matches for the times being except rematches between these two. Bruce the Giant has been kept pretty strong – I think we’ll see him taking up a lot of Enygma’s time in February. And I think we can say with some certainty that Jumbo Jackson and Chris Caulfield have officially started a feud now that Jackson pulled off a tainted win here at the PPV.

January Prediction Results

This diary is a really fun read! I get a kick out of the columns written about the way people are used and such.

Thanks for the support! I've been having fun doing it even though USPW seems like a crowded field at the moment. And the fact that I've completely ruled out doing any other kind of dynasty until this one reaches at least 250 posts is really helping with my focus. And the fact that I still book poorly, or hopefully more accurately have squeamish moments and tweak the card at the last moment (like the disaster on the last American Wrestling) helps. :)

JANUARY 2010 RESULTS

January Champion: ChrisKid

angeldelayette 5/8

Timber 4/8

Notes: A three-way tie for the PPV predictions means that ChrisKid captures the overall championship for January! ChrisKid can recommend a new signing and determine the wrestler's disposition and gimmick. Also, ChrisKid has the option of either guest-writing a piece for the PW Candle, or can select-a-push (or de-push) for a wrestler or tag-team for the month of February.

The Chris Caulfield loss seemed to have been the shocker of the show. Jackson did only get a tainted win, but as was mentioned early in the dynasty Caulfield's contract is one of the soonest to expire so I'm trying to manage his overness while still keeping him relevant until I know if he's going to be around. A program where he bleeds some overness to an Upper Midcarder rather than dumping it on a midcarder or somesuch is what's been going on there behind-the-scenes.

I enjoyed the PPV. While it wasn't a show I would have purchased and I would be upset as a fan of the World Title wasn't on the line somehow. Still liked the show and Tyson Baine looks like a major threat to the World Title right now.

Glad to see Champion as a Champion as I am thinking about doing this in my current USPW game as well.

Towers of Power winning the titles again is another nice touch to the show. I am building their momentum up but I am just going to trasfer that heat over to the Peoples Team instead.

Curious to see what happens with Force and the Weapon too. That could be a fun program.

POPULARITY WATCH

Anger’s TV and PPV exposure with Jumbo Jackson against Chris Caulfield helped him jump from 38 to 46 across the United States. Jackson has shot even further from 58 to 76 or 77 in every region of the USA. Caulfield has dropped from 68 to 54 or 55 across the country.

Larry Lawrence has made a big splash in the few weeks he’s been with USPW, jumping from 29 across the board to a wide range of improvements from 38 (South West) to 46 (Mid Atlantic). Overall he’s up to a 42/D in the USA.

It was an interesting month for USPW World Champion Enygma. His little program with Wolf Hawkins, and Enygma himself taking the pin at the PPV, cost him a bit. He’s dropped slightly from 72 at the beginning of January to a range from 68-71.

Bruce the Giant was steady and methodical in January and increased his popularity from 80 to 85.

Tyson Baine likewise increased from 80 to a range from 82 (Great Lakes) to 89 (South East). His Titans partner T-Rex saw gains from 60 to a range from 64 to 72.

The Force is up from 56 to 63.

Savage Fury have dropped from about 41 to 36.

James Justice has dropped from 72 to a range from 62-69.

Captain USA dropped from 38 to 32.

There weren’t really any other major swings to note. The top faces need a comeback month as Enygma, James Justice, and Chris Caulfield all took hits. The only rising face star right now seems to be The Force.

USPW REPORT - WEEK 1, FEBRUARY 2010

By Brint Williams - PW Candle Columnist

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r203/gratefulcowboy/pw%20candle/2009-04-07-businessman.jpg

“Pete and I are changing to a cowboy gimmick this week. Hopefully that will push us higher up the card. We have to try something because the fans are just killing us right now.”

-Al the Hillbilly speaks in a deflated tone about his upcoming switch to Al the Cowboy.

“It was an honor to win this title at Stars, Stripes and Slams and I’m happy to defend it against all comers.”

-Nicky Champion on the USPW National Championship.

“It’s going to be the shortest reign in USPW history because I’m invoking my rematch clause at American Wrestling. Nicky Champion still has a lot to prove to everyone, especially me.”

January Ratings on Sports America:

Week 1: 1.33

Week 2: 1.48

Week 3: 1.46

Week 4: 1.49

USPW returns to their home base at the Huntsville Fairgrounds in the South East this week for the follow-up show to Stars, Stripes and Slams! 2010.

If there’s a criticism you can give to SSS2010, it’s that they gave you a cliffhanger at the PPV to give you a reason to watch American Wrestling this week. In my opinion the pay-per-view shows should be used to settle all matters, not to set-up or further TV show storylines. If you didn’t buy the PPV and didn’t read up about it online but happened to catch the next American Wrestling, you might wonder what the heck is going on with Commissioner Doom and how and why did he disappear. And, to tell you the truth, even if you did buy the PPV I’m not sure you’d have any answers to those questions.

USPW has also announced a few signings:

32-year old Colour Commentator Ted Ross has officially given notice to 4C that he intends to join up with United States Pro Wrestling as a face announcer to finally bring some needed balance to the announce table. Despite the fact that USPW have added Ross, James Justice is going to do guest commentary this week on TV while Ross relocates.

Joanne Rodriguez has left AAA and has been added to a women’s division that is expected to come back with a vengeance in February.

And, lastly, Sgt. Bubba Lee West has signed a written deal believed to be in the 18-month range. Rumor has it that Sam Strong is going to send West on a mission to find Commissioner Doom.

With no explanation, The Hillbillys are now going to call themselves The Cowboy Brothers. Al the Cowboy and Pete the Cowboy aren’t being done any favors this week though as they are matched up against the devastating team of Tyson Baine and T-Rex.

If I was a fan who bought the PPV I’d be pretty angry that an Enygma vs. Bruce the Giant world title match is being given away on TV just a few days later. It leads me to believe that this one will be some sort of quick non-finish where they don’t let a lot out of the bag but can tease a future matchup while still inserting Tyson Baine into the match (probably through interference). Whatever happens here, they better get Enygma on some kind of roll in February or else we’ll begin to start hearing whispers about his suitability for the world title.

Two women’s division matches are on the card after not seeing any ladies for a couple of weeks. USPW Women’s Champion Raven Robinson will also be in action in a dark match.

With James Justice in the announce booth that probably eliminates him from being booked this week. Chris Caulfield and The Force have been rumored to be teaming up. I don’t see Jumbo Jackson booked yet either.

This is still good stuff. The interesting, unique viewpoint makes USPW interesting again which is amazing considering the number of times we've seen the same old feuds on these boards!

The Cowboy Brothers vs. The Titans

Poor Cowboys. They really need a turn to get some momentum going

Captain USA vs. The Weapon

Cap is just handing out pop

Alicia Strong vs. Zoe Ammis

Zoes a good worker but Alicia is the best in the world.

Joanne Rodriguez vs. Belle Bryden

BB is the past

Freddie Datsun vs. “Luscious” Larry Lawrence

LLL is clearly brilliant but its sad that a USPW star like Fred has to lay down for him so early. Datsun vs Champion vs Valentine vs Anger please

USPW National Championship: Nicky Champion © vs. Peter Valentine

Hmmmm. If Nicky wins thats it. Feud over and Valentine is crushed. If Pete wins it straight back then weve got something interesting.

USPW World Championship: Enygma © vs. Bruce the Giant

SE finish of some kind with interference

Hope everyone had a good & safe calendar new year!

Last call if anyone wants to jump into the new prediction contest for February. January Champion ChrisKid has recommended a signing & a push so that's now underway!

Thanks for those of you who voted for me in the DOTM thread. It is much appreciated. I'm having fun and think it's certainly a learning experience (for me) at the same time.
