NWA - 87 and Beyond

Recommended Posts

Bill Apter, former editor at Pro Wrestling Illustrated, has stepped down from his journalistic responsibilities and purchased Jim Crockett Promotions, which had just finalized a deal to purchase the struggling Championship Wrestling of Florida. All indications are that Jim Crockett will stay on as a member of the company’s board of directors.

One of Apter’s first moves was to retire the NWA Women’s title and eliminate the women’s division and that saw the mass release of every non-valet in the company including Misty Blue Simmes, Heidi Lee Morgan, Kat LaRoux and Linda Dallas.

Dark Journey, one of only two females left on Apter’s active roster along with Precious, was released from her UWF contract.

Mike Graham, who sold CWF to JCP, is also at the tail end of his contract and rumours are swirling as to whether or not Apter will even try to resign the second generation grappler.

Terry Allen, also known as Magnum TA, has been rehabbing diligently after his October auto accident that nearly killed him and is hopeful that he will step foot in the ring soon.

Kendall Windham, son to Blackjack Mulligan and brother to Barry Windham, is said to be in the doghouse with Bill Apter, so he may join the ranks of the unemployed in the near future.

New Japan Pro Wrestling crowned a new IWGP Heavyweight Champion at the Yokohama Arena as Mr. Pogo defeated Seiji Sakaguchi in front of a rabid sold out crowd of 16,000.

G.L.O.W. Crown champion Tammy Jones downed Spanish Red while tag champs Prankster Punks defeated the California Dolls in front of a sold out crowd at Chandler High School.

In jailhouse news, Ken Patera was released from Wisconsin Department of Justice jurisdiction after serving two years for destruction of property and assaulting a police officer.

Joint Promotions Wrestling, based out of the UK, saw the JPUK British Heavyweight title change hands as Ray Steele managed to unseat Tiger Dalibar Singh in front of about 1,700 at Solent Hall.

Catch Wrestling Association saw Otto Wanz take down challenger Bull Pain to retain the CWA Heavyweight title at Wiener Stadthalle. The former tag champs weren’t as lucky because the Russian Invader and Rambo took advantage of Franz Schumann and The Great Kokina to become the new CWA tag team champions in front of a crowd of nearly 1,700.

A sold out crowd of 2,000 people at the Marian College Auditorium saw a pair of successful title defenses as the International Freedom Fighters were able to escape with their World Wrestling Association tag titles after a grueling matchup with Damage, Inc. In the main event of the evening, Scott Rechsteiner turned back the challenge of Greg Wojokowski to retain his WWA World Heavyweight title.

Roddy Piper, a movie star? That seems to be in the plans for the Rowdy One as he’s announced intentions to retire from the squared circle and go to Hollywood after Wrestlemania 3 is completed.

Negotiations with several new wrestlers are pending for Jim Crockett Promotions and it’s been confirmed that Eddie Gilbert and Owen Hart are among the shortlist that Bill Apter has compiled for possible addition to the promotion.

CMLL held their weekly show in front of a sell-out crowd of 4,000 at Inforum Irapuato and saw Los Hermanos Dinamita II turn back the challenge of Atlantis & Jalisco Jr to retain their Mexican National Tag titles.

AJW, based out of Japan, saw three thrilling title matches at the Kurakata Sports Hall on their Whirlwind Tour, getting a new AJW World champion in the process as Aja Kong defeated Mika Komatsu for the AJW World title. The Japanese Devils downed Black Pair to retain their WWWA World Tag titles while Yukari Omori got the three count on Kazue Nagahori to keep her WWWA World championship.

Things were rocking in the Pacific Northwest as the sold out crowd in the Big Dipper Ice Arena saw a pair of successful title defenses. Ricky Santana and Cocoa Samoa were able to outsmart Super Ninja and Brady Boone to keep ahold of their PNW Tag titles. In the main event of the evening, Rip Oliver downed Earthquake Ferris to retain his PNW Heavyweight title.

AGPW’s War Machine Tour also had a pair of successful title defenses, one for the North American Tag titles as Leo Burke and the Cuban Assassin were able to overcome a strong challenge by Red Shadow and Buddy Lane while the International Heavyweight champ Ron Starr was able to defeat Gerry Morrow to retain.

A press conference for the official announcement of Bill Apter’s purchase of Jim Crockett Promotions has been scheduled for 3pm EST on Saturday, shortly before the scheduled weekly World Championship Wrestling telecast on TBS.

Word among sources inside Jim Crockett Promotions indicate that the Florida Heavyweight Championship belt will be retired, upsetting current champion Ed Gantner. One source says Apter isn’t worred about Gantner but about having too many championships to chase. Apparently he feels the title belts should have some meaning rather than being too numerous to mention.

I like the looks of this. Personally, I like the Florida title since it gives a regional title for the little guys to fight for (and gives the apperance of keeping the territories alive, Florida - Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and more as you expand). On the other hand, I agree with making the titles mean something. Too many can water down the product.

I enjoyed your previous diary so I know this one will be great as well. I like how you set this card up with clear jobbers vs. stars. Then in the main event you have star vs. star.

Rocky King / George South vs Barbarian / Warlord w Paul Jones

History tells us that any time Rocky King and George South are in a tag team together, said tag team will not be winning jack crap.

Mike Graham vs Rick Rude

Tully Blanchard vs Ed Gantner

Robert Gibson / Ricky Morton vs Chris Champion / Sean Royal

Lex Luger vs Barry Windham

No real reason for this pick I just like Barry Windham a lot more than Lex.

Rude should be a focal point for your future.

Horsemen don't lose to midcarders.

Robert Gibson / Ricky Morton vs Chris Champion / Sean Royal

Lex Luger vs Barry Windham

Lex is the fresh Horseman, and as such needs all the wins he can gain to verify his spot.

funny thing is in my AWA diary, Gantner defended the Florida title against world champ Ric Flair - and PINNED Flair!

I'm sure in real life, the bull would be on the receiving end of a Horsemen beatdown for weeks until one of them took his Florida title, or established him as a superstar. In the game, Ed parlayed the win to get a TV title shot against Tully Blanchard but came up short and they all went their separate ways....for now anyway,

Thanks, Olympia. Right now, it's an extra title that just clutters things up to me. Although it does give me a storyline right off the bat with Gantner, should I choose to go that way.

Thanks, BHK. I wasn't real sure anyone would remember that short-lived diary. Wish things would have worked out better with that, but I can't really re-visit it as I haven't been able to find a DOTT db that's compatible with TEW10 and I no longer have access to the previous TEW version or the DOTT db. :(

Well, to be honest, the Horsemen aren't there...yet. :) And yes, I am a huge Horsemen fan/mark whatever you want to call me. Rude is certainly on my list of non-horsemen guys to get going as soon as I can.

I saw that in your diary, Olympia, but I haven't gotten caught up to where I can comment just yet. :) Trust me, I've enjoyed what I've read of yours thus far.

Thanks for checking in, y'all! I've been working on getting the picture files uploaded to photobucket and getting the first card completed. It's done in the game, just have to get it written up. I anticipate it being up either Wed or Thur, just depends on how things go with work & RL. If anyone else wants to throw their prediction in, feel free. The more the merrier!

Before I go, I just want to say thanks to Genadi and everyone that contributed to putting this db together.

Still finishing writing up the first card, so I thought I'd post my roster instead. Only going to post photos for the ME/UMC talent, though.

Bobby Holly vs The Italian Stallion

In a match that was better left off air, it certainly didn't exceed expectations as the newly signed Holly was nervous and it showed. The Stallion, on the other hand, had a very off night and made the match even worse.

The Italion Stallion won in 6:31 by Pinfall

Johnny Ace vs Lazer Tron

Low expectations on Apter's part were exceeded by the solid in-ring action between Ace & Lazer Tron, but still it didn't get the crowd going.

Lazer Tron downed Johnny Ace at 6:05 by pinfall with a Butterfly Suplex

The show opens with the New Breed standing in the ring.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/ChrisChampion2.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/SeanRoyal2.jpg

Sean Royal: Me and Chris, we are the future of tag team wrestling. We’re coming in on space cycles and we’re going to remake the tag team division here in the NWA and we’re going to start with you Rock and Roll Express. Tell’em Chris.

Chris Champion: Rock and Roll Express, your time is past. You think because you’ve got all the little girls wound up tighter than a drum that you are something special. Well you can keep the little girls and we’ll take the grown women every day and twice on Sundays. You’re looking at the future of this business and take a real good hard look because tonight the future is now. Tonight, Robert Gibson and Ricky Morton, you are going to find out just why the New Breed is superior to you!

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/BobCaudle.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/DavidCrockett.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/TonySchiavone5.jpg

Bob Caudle: Well, Royal and Champion had some strong words for the Rock and Roll Express right there, David.

David Crockett: They seemed quite angry, Bob. I think it might wind up as a big mistake to try and provoke such an established team like Ricky and Robert.

Tony Schiavone: Why, Crockett? Because they certainly don't look like much of a tag team to me. Champion and Royal have the bodies and athleticism to take care of Morton and Gibson.

Caudel and Crockett just look at Schiavone as if he's taken leave of his senses.

Schiavone: What's your problem? Let's get to the ring for our first match of the night.

MATCH ONE

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/RockyKing.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/GeorgeSouth.jpgvshttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/TheWarlord2.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/TheBarbarian6.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/PaulJones2.jpg

Rocky King & George South vs The Warlord & The Barbarian w/Paul Jones

In a match that saw a brief burst of solid in-ring action from the designated Washington Generals aka Rocky King & George South, the defining difference was the sheer power and brutality shown by Pain, Inc. The Warlord and Barbarian toyed with the smaller men for several minutes before finally mercifully ending it at 7:08 by pinfall after a Power Slam by Warlord on South.

Caudle: A pair of beasts right there as they pick up the win. Warlord and Barbarian took it right to the smaller men.

Crockett: South and King never stood a chance in there tonight, that's for sure.

Schiavone: Paul Jones has to be glad to be associated with such a dominant tag team. They'll make sure that everything Jones wants to get accomplished in the NWA will happen. I can assure you that they will eventually target the NWA World tag titles in the not too distant future.

Rick Rude comes out to the announce position, interrupting the announcers, before shaking hands with Tony Schiavone, again causing looks of consternation on the faces of David Crockett and Bob Caudle.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/RickRude2.jpg

Rick Rude: Now, I know the announcers are taken aback by my physique, even Tony, but I'm sure all the men in the audience and watching at home are jealous and all the women wish they could have just a touch of my perfect body. Too bad all the heifers in this crowd aren't even close to worthy enough for me to grace them with that gift. But the crowd isn't what I'm out here to discuss. I want some competition here tonight. And I'm throwing out the first invite to the Rude Invitational. Anyone that isn't afraid of losing is welcome to find out just how Rude I can be.

It doesn’t take but a few seconds before Mike Graham comes walking out to accept the challenge

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/MikeGraham.jpg

Mike Graham: Hold on a minute Rick Rude. Who do you think you are? This isn’t some playground and you darn sure aren’t the big bully on the block. I’ll take your challenge and you’ll regret being such an arrogant windbag.

MATCH TWO

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/RickRude2.jpgvshttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/MikeGraham.jpg

Rick Rude vs Mike Graham

Graham took the early initiative in this match up, but every time it seemed he'd get the upper hand, Rude would slip from his grasp. Eventually Rude's power game gained him the advantage before getting the win at 7:38 after a hellacious Rude Awakening.

Schiavone: A great win for Rick Rude right there, gentlemen. He showed that punk Mike Graham just what a professional wrestler is all about.

Crockett: What is with you today, Tony? I’ve never seen you like this. It’s almost like I’ve never known you.

Schiavone: I’m just being myself Crockett, you should try it sometime instead of being a milk-toast humanoid.

Caudle: That’s enough you two, let’s at least keep it allegedly professional and civil out here. Let’s take it to the ring where the NWA World Television champion, Tully Blanchard, and his personal secretary, Dark Journey, are standing by.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/TullyBlanchard2.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/DarkJourney.jpg

Blanchard and Dark Journey laugh at the crowd reaction and let the jeers and catcalls roll right off them. He take her hand and spins her around once simultaneously appreciating and showing off the lithe form of his personal secretary. She shimmies up beside him and slides the custom-made shades off his face as Blanchard begins to speak.

Tully Blanchard: Eat your hearts out Savannah, Georgia, this fine specimen of womanhood is more than any of you could handle or even dream of being. That's why she's with me, the NWA World Television Champion and none of you and certainly not with my opponent tonight, Ed Gantner. I understand you were the Florida Heavyweight Champion, but you have to realize Florida isn't the world and it certainly isn't on television. I'm the NWA World Television champion and it's not because I'm the best looking, although I am, and it's not because Dark Journey's the best personal secretary that Blanchard Enterprises could recruit. It's because I'm the best at what I do and that's take care of business inside this ring. It's my ring and I've got the gold to show for it, Gantner. You want to make a name for yourself at my expense? I don't think so, my friend. You step foot between these ropes, Gantner, and I can guarantee you one thing. You'll wish you never signed the contract to be my opponent. So come on out here so you can get your first lesson in the big leagues!

Dark Journey exits as Ed Gantner stalks his way to the ring, a menacing look etched on his hairy face for this NWA World Television championship match.

MATCH THREE

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/TullyBlanchard2.jpgvshttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/EdGantner.jpg

Tully Blanchard vs Ed Gantner

Blanchard and Gantner put on a surprisingly solid back and forth match, but it was Tully's aptitude to play loose and fast with the rules that tipped the match in his favor. Add in Dark Journey's occasional distractions of Gantner as well as referee Teddy Long and it was only a matter of time. Finally Tully put the match away via pinfall at 14:41 after his signature Slingshot Suplex.

Caudle: That was a heck of a match right there wrestling fans, but don't forget our main event tonight on World Championship Wrestling will pit a pair of men that don't like each other very much as Lex Luger faces off with the lanky Texan, Barry Windham. I can't wait to see these two studs face off tonight. Right now, let's head back to the ring where the Rock and Roll Express will face off with the New Breed.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/RickyMorton.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/RobertGibson4.jpg

Ricky Morton: New Breed, we heard what you had to say earlier on and if you think you're better than us, you're just dead wrong. We're former world tag team champions and we know exactly what we're doing in the ring. We know what each other is thinking, we know where each other is at all times, and we sweat and bleed for each other, jack! We're rock and roll and it's gonna live forever!

Robert Gibson: Sean Royal! Chris Champion! Do you know often we've heard someone say they're better than us? Do you know what we've done here in the National Wrestling Alliance? I don't think you do, because if you did, you wouldn't have poked us with a stick boys. We are going to show you what a real tag team is all about. It's about teamwork, it's about integrity, but most of all, for us, it's about rock and roll. So come on out here and take your medicine like men!

MATCH FOUR

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/RickyMorton.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/RobertGibson4.jpgvshttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/ChrisChampion2.jpghttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/SeanRoyal2.jpg

The Rock and Roll Express vs The New Breed

A good back and forth affair was ruined late in the match when Stan Lane of the Midnight Express came down and interfered with Robert Gibson at 13:46 causing a disqualification victory for the Rock and Rollers.

Caudle: What a horrible way for that match to end. It is almost assuredly the decision of Jim Cornette, the manager of the Midnight Express, for Stan Lane to interject himself in that manner here tonight.

Crockett: Maybe the New Breed were even in on it, Bob?

Schiavone: Now wait a minute Crockett. Do you have any proof of that or are you just throwing slanderous accusations around?

Crockett: Obviously not, Tony, I'm just making an observation about..

Schiavone: Until you have some proof, you might want to keep your trap shut, Crockett. I'm sure the New Breed wouldn't be happy to be part of your conspiracy theories, particularly since you don't have one shred of evidence.

Caudle: Stop it, Tony. David was just saying...oh here comes the NWA World Heavyweight champion, the Nature Boy Ric Flair. Welcome, Nature Boy!

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/RicFlair6.jpg

Ric Flair: Thank you Bob Caudle, it's your pleasure. Now, the entire sporting world is aware that the world champion is a fashion plate beyond compare. Custom made from head to toe and looking only the way the world champion should look. And obviously looking better than your friend, not mine, Nikita Koloff. Now everyone knows that Nikita Koloff has been hanging around with the plumber's son, Dusty Rhodes and he's lost that mean streak that he used to have. He's lost that drive, that desire to be the best, no matter what the cost. Koloff, it's been said that you still think you're the best athlete to ever come out of Russia. Well, let me tell you this, comrade, this isn't mother Russia, this is the Nature Boy's home turf, my stomping grounds and the only chance you have of beating the world champion is slim and none. Nikita Koloff, do yourself a favor and step away from the limosine riding, jet-flying, kiss the girls and make them all cry world champion. It'll be the smartest thing you ever do! Woooooooooooooooo!

MATCH FIVE

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/LexLuger4.jpgvshttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/BarryWindham.jpg

Lex Luger vs Barry Windham

Luger, being scouted at ringside by the Nature Boy, had his moments of brilliance in this match but was clearly the lesser experienced between he and the second generation grappler. The longer the match went on, the more winded the bodybuilder seemed to get, until he sent the action outside of the ring where a double countout occurred at 17:58.

Caudle: Ladies and gentlemen, we're out of time for tonight. For David Crockett and Tony Schiavone, I'm Bob Caudle and this has been World Championship Wrestling! We'll see you next week!

POST SHOW HAPPENINGS

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/ArnAnderson0.jpgvshttp://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/NikitaKoloff2.jpg

Arn Anderson vs Nikita Koloff

This match likely should have been on the air as both Koloff and Anderson brought the intensity and eventually referee Nick Patrick had to call for the bell when he lost control of the match at 10:22, resulting in a double dq.

http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/RicFlair6.jpg & http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h185/RoyalsBlue/NWA87_New/DustyRhodes5.jpg

After the match, the Nature Boy came in and helped Arn gain the upper hand on the massive Russian, putting the boots to the big man until Dusty Rhodes finally came to Koloff's aid and ran them off.

Vince McMahon’s brainchild, Wrestlemania, is getting ready for its third go-round in a few short weeks. The hype has been through the moon for this as the WWF is pulling out all the stops by confirming several celebrities will be in attendance including Aretha Franklin, Mary Hart, and Bob Uecker just to name a few.

All Star Wrestling has confirmed that they’ve signed Bobby “The Brain” Heenan to a pay per appearance deal. Owner Al Tomko is thrilled to have the veteran manager in the fold, whether full time or not. No word on how Vince McMahon feels about this development.

Terry Funk surprised wrestling fans with his appearance in Sylvester Stallone’s latest movie “Over The Top”. “He looked even less natural than he does in the ring” quipped PWI’s Eddie Ellner. “of course, next to Stallone, he didn’t look so bad.”

UWF visited Louisiana this Sunday and saw a respectable crowd of nearly 3,500 show up at the Avron B Fogleman Arena. On this card, Rick Steiner pinned Savannah Jack to become the new UWF Television champ.

Wayne Bridges was unsuccessful in his attempt to dethrone current ASW British Heavyweight champion Tony St. Clair at the White Rock Theatre in the Southern UK. A sold out crowd of just over 1,000 definitely got their money’s worth in this one.

Word is that Owen Hart flat out rejected negotiations with Bill Apter and the National Wrestling Alliance due to his desire to concentrate on his Stampede Wrestling career.

What would be an epic battle is the Mulkey's vs. Rocky King and George South. I would say put it on one of your shows but it would probably kill your show.

Nikita Koloff vs The Terminator

Nikita was one of my all time favorites not that it matters to anyone.:D

Shaska Whatley vs Mike Rotundo

Tommy Angel vs Ron Simmons

Tweek, thanks for the predictions, glad to see you back this show.

BHK, are you thinking that I'd have something sneaky and underhanded happen in a tag match? Or did you just not like the Midnight Express? Thanks for predicting again!

Tommy Angel was an every day jobber. I actually teamed him up with Paul Roma in a '87 game I did and they moved to Midcard before I could do anything about it.

Rob, this is part of the era that I enjoy about wrestling. the late 80's - early 90's was one of my favorite time period in wrestling. Keep up the good work.

I don't remember him, I started watching NWA/WCW in 1989, right after Terry Funk piledrived Ric Flair through the table. So I am not sure if Tommy was there or not by then. If he was, he did not leave much of an impression on me like the other NWA jobbers of that time like Rocky King and The State Patrol.

The MX rawk, and should be treated as such.

Nikita Koloff vs The Terminator

A nice squash to the least known Laurinitas.

Shaska Whatley vs Mike Rotundo

There are a lot of squashes to this show.

Tommy Angel vs Ron Simmons

More squash than Thanksgiving!

Dusty Rhodes vs Big Bubba Rogers

As much as I'd like to see you able to push Bubba, nobody this early on save for Flair is gonna be beating Dusty.
