When Portland Wrestling Ruled the Northwest

Recommended Posts

“Today’s wrestling really pains me. There’s no wrestling, just a lot of screaming and flying around.” Don Owen 1995

With my other PNW dynasty destroyed and the unfinished feeling I had from, so the PNW is back. The quote above is from the great Don Owen the long time promoter of the PNW. We are in the late 80’s the beginning of the down fall of Portland Wrestling. Most of the big talent has been taken by WWF, such as Jimmy Snuka, Roddy Piper, and Billy Jack Haynes but here in the PNW the talent is still here to still become a major force in wrestling. 1986 saw the biggest decline in PNW history with Cocoa Samoa, Scott Doring and Rip Oliver being the biggest stars in the promotion.

There are two restrictions that have been placed on myself during this northwest adventure. 1) Any wrestler that will be added to the roster must have wrestled sometime in the northwest. 2) Quick title changes like the PNW use to have, as I personally like long title reigns but the PNW did not have that.

Hope you enjoy.

First match predictions later tonight and who has the most predictions right at the end of every big event will be given an opportunity to pick their own storylines.

Hope everyone enjoys the return of the PNW.

Man, seeing many of those pics really brought back a lot of memories for me. Can still see those weekly shows airing on TV from the Portland Sports Arena which, if memory serves me correctly, was a converted bowling alley.

Are Don Coss and Dutch Savage the announcers?

Good luck with your promotion! Hope you can keep it going for a while. I'm looking forward to see where this goes.

P.S. - Is it just me or was Don Owen old at birth? :p

welcome back for ROUND 2!

Steve Doll v. Cocoa Samoa

I like Doll and think he is someone you can help build around, but for now, Cocoa is the big star

Art Crews v. Super Ninja

Crews is a nice guy to have around and job out to the rising stars. He has some passable skills but can't see him rising to the top very fast/ while this Ninja fellow looks to be a young up and comer.

The American Ninja v. Moondog Moretti

two guys who could grow into champions for you. Going with the Moondog with the edge on experience and skills. (besides AdaMS can get all his heat back with some menacing looks)

Billy Two Eagles v. Matt Borne

If I remember anything from last time, it's that Two Eagles are your favorite jobbers. :-) Hopefully Borne can stay clean and healthy enough to make a difference for you.

Brady Boone v. Avalanche

Boone should teach the kid a few moves. The future PN News will learn fast and be beating up Boone in the near future. Again a guy who can rise with his menace despite a few losses to the entrenched stars.

Pre-Show: Art Barr v. Chris Colt

sure Barr will get a push with Sandy's backstage influence. But Chris Von Colt can give you an evil heel on top to run some mid-carders thru and get them over enough to challenge Oliver for the PNW title. - Colt will need big wins over guys like Barr to do his job

Pre-Show: Mark Young v. Sky Hi Lee

Not sure about Lee, but the son of Jay Strongbow could make a move in the PNW. He'd be that type of midcard face who could make a move and become a believebale challenge for Oliver while you prepare someone since right now your roster seems to be top heavy with heels (at first glance I saw about 7 heels who could main event but none on the face side. Could we be expecting one to make a turn in the near future? or maybe a new hire or two)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

One saving grace PNW has that was untapped in your first tour of duty is Apache Bull Ramos!! Vastly popular in the northwest (popular as in hated as much as Buddy Rose). He's too old to carry you, but could be trotted out (much like I have Ray Stevens and Der Kaiser) to help get over your other guys. Could see him joining forces with the likes of Cuban Assssin to help Avalanche or Abudda Dien gain some traction with the fans. He could help headline some of the co-main events for your supershows as added attraction.

good luck!! I'm sure you will take us down a different path this time and I look forward to the journey

I believe it was a bowling that Owen converted and now it’s a church office. Just sad.

Don Coss, Dutch Savage and Stan "The Man" Stasiak will be the announcers.

Don Owen will always be old to me. Even the rare tapings that can be seen from the 60's and 70's, Don looks like he can hardly move around.

Thank you. I had one other but children issues destroyed it but I decided to give it another go.

right now your roster seems to be top heavy with heels (at first glance I saw about 7 heels who could main event but none on the face side. Could we be expecting one to make a turn in the near future? or maybe a new hire or two)

It is very heel heavy, especially at the top. Right now I have 26 wrestlers; I would like to get to 30. So some old big stars could be coming back to the northwest.

One saving grace PNW has that was untapped in your first tour of duty is Apache Bull Ramos!! Vastly popular in the northwest (popular as in hated as much as Buddy Rose). Bull would be a good idea but he's so old and he never wants to lose a match. Plus this is 1987 Portland wrestling, very few big stars from the past, expect for Rose, Snuka and Piper coming over once in a while.

good luck!! I'm sure you will take us down a different path this time and I look forward to the journey

Thank you. The path will be very different and a very different style as well.

Pacific Northwest Wrestling presents Big Time Wrestling at the Portland Sports Arena in Portland, Oregon. (1959) April 1987 Week 1

Non-Televised Match

Mark%20Young%20%282%29.jpgMark Young vs. Tyler%20Mayne.jpgSky Hi Lee

Match Notes: In an extremely poor match, Mark Young defeated Sky Hi Lee in 5:35 by pinfall with a Dropkick. The crowd was totally turned off by having a match between jobbers on the show.

[Grade 8]

Non-Televised Match

Chris%20Colt.jpgChris Colt vs. Art%20Barr%20%282%29.jpgArt Barr

Match Notes: In a match that had an average crowd reaction but featured terrible wrestling, Art Barr defeated Chris Colt in 5:39 by pinfall. Chris Colt was really off his game tonight. Art Barr is improving in Performance skills. Chris Colt is improving in flying skills.

[Grade 33]

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i387/thunderwill/TEW/th_DonCoss.jpghttp://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i387/thunderwill/TEW/th_StanStasiak.jpg & Dutch%20Savage.jpg

Don Coss, Stan “The Man” Stasiak & Dutch Savage welcomes everyone to the Portland Sports Arena for tonight’s big event.

Don Owen is standing in the middle of the ring.

Don Owen: I would like to thank everyone for coming out tonight and invite everyone to join us next week here at the sports arena. Kids that are under twelve years old will be free to enter the arena also. I would also like to announce the first match of the NWA Pacific Northwest Television Title Tournament between Matt Borne and Billy Two Eagles. Once again I hope everyone has a good time here tonight.

PN%20News%202.jpgAvalanche vs. Brady%20Boone.jpgBrady Boone

Match Notes The crowd just unmercifully booed Avalanche has is name was called. Boone tries the strategy of quick kicks with his legs and fast movement to avoid the much bigger man. This works for a while until Avalanche gets a low blow to gain the advantage. The crowd really lets Avalanche know how they feel when he traps Boone in a very long chinlock. Boone escapes but is shoved into the corner. Avalanche goes running toward the corner for a corner splash but Boone is able to avoid the hit and get a quick roll-up to earn the victory at the 5:40 mark.

[Match Rating: 32]

Matt Borne is with Don Coss in the Crow’s Nest

Don Coss: How do you feel about your match tonight against the veteran Billy Two Eagles?

Matt Borne: Tonight Portland learns just what a Maniac is capable of. Billy Two Eagles you are just a stepping stone of my greatness. The Maniac will come alive tonight.

Matt%20Borne%20%282%29.jpgMatt Borne vs. Billy%20Two%20Eagles%20%282%29.jpgBilly Two Eagles

Match Notes Borne goes right after Billy Two Eagles but Billy Two Eagles is able to avoid the rust, forcing Borne into the corner face first. Billy Two Eagles goes for a quick roll-up to get the quick victory but Borne is able to kick out at the last second. Borne quickly takes control and just pounds Billy Two Eagles for the rest of the match before finally hitting the Diving Senton to end the carnage at the 5:35 mark.

[Match Rating: 44]

Brian%20Adams%202.jpgAmerican Ninja vs. Moondog%20Moretti.jpg Moondog Moretti

Match Notes American Ninja and Moretti waste very little time and go right after each other. Moretti losing the brawl hits a cheap shot and clips the right knee of American Ninja. Moretti is just vicious on the right knee of American Ninja. Moretti withstands a comeback attempt but clipping the knee once again. American Ninja goes for a comeback once again but it looks like Moretti would go for the right knee one more time. American Ninja was ready for this and scoped him up into a Gorilla Press, forcing Moretti to land right on his face. American Ninja gets the pinfall victory at the 5:59 mark.

[Match Rating: 35]

Steve Doll is with Don Coss

Don Coss: Tonight your facing Cocoa Samoa in the main event, how to you feel?

Steve Doll: I feel great but I have a little challenge for you tonight Cocoa Samoa. If I win tonight, next week me and my partner will face you and Ricky Santana for the NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team Titles but if you win then the Southern Rockers will be no more. What do you say about that, Cocoa Samoa?

Art%20Crews.jpg Art Crew vs. Super%20Ninja.jpg Super Ninja

Match Notes Crews tries to use is veteran craftiness, while Super Ninja tries to use his Japanese style to control the pace of the match. Super Ninja gets the first big shot of the match with a big dropkick that sends Crews through the middle rope to the outside. Crews gets back into the ring and tries to kick Super Ninja with a clothesline but Super Ninja ducks the attempt and counts with his own clothesline. Crews hit a low-blow out of nowhere and gets a quick small package but Super Ninja is able to kick out at two. The two just start slugging it out with Super Ninja getting the advantage and hits a Double Knee Drop coming off the rope and that was it for Crews. Super Ninja gets the pinfall victory at the 8:04 mark.

[Match Rating: 34]

Cocoa Samoa is with Don Coss

Don Coss: Steve Doll challenged you to a big match tonight are you going to accept that challenge?

Cocoa Samoa: Yes Steve Doll I will accept your challenge as we both know who the better wrestler is. So if you would somehow win tonight Doll, then you have your title match next week but all you fat teenage girls in the audience get ready for the breakup of the Southern Rockers.

A masked man joins the announcers both

Masked Wrestler: Rip Oliver you time as the top dog in the northwest is over, as I’m coming for what belongs to me.

Just as quickly the mask wrestlers leaves the both.

Steve%20Doll.jpg Steve Doll v. Cocoa%20Samoa.jpg Cocoa Samoa

Match Notes Samoa does not even let Doll get into the ring and takes him down on the outside. A delayed suplex on hard concert floor almost breaks Doll’s back. Samoa rolls Doll into the ring and then clotheslines him as Doll tries to get up. Doll gets his knees up just in time and Samoa goes for splash. Doll takes over the match and just pounds him in the corner. Doll goes charging into the corner but Samoa moves out of the way, forcing Doll to hit his shoulder on the ring post. Samoa goes for a roll-up, holds Doll’s tights for good measure but is only able to get a two count. Doll duck a clothesline and hits his own and targets the neck of Samoa. Doll hits a neckbreaker for a near-fall and Doll is able to continue the pressure with a flying shoulder block. Doll takes a little too long getting to the top of the turnbuckle allowing Samoa to sneak behind Doll and hit a big superplex that leave both men hurting. Doll is to his feet first but falls into the corner, allowing Samoa to charge the corner. Doll gets his feet up and hits a big clothesline for another near-fall. Doll comes off the top-rope for a crossbody but Samoa reverses but Doll reverses that and gets the pinfall victory at the 18:15 mark.

[Match Rating: 44]

Overall (44)

Show Notes:

That was a big difference from my last diary in the shows rating but we will get those old numbers after a time. Overall not a bad first show and hopefully the younger stars can work towards something that would make the old Portland wrestling proud.

I would also like to thank fullMETAL for making those awesome titles for me. Once again thank you.

Thank you for reading.

Miller is able to recover but misses a clothesline and takes a viscous elbow from American Ninja. Miller finally takes control and put American Ninja on the mat with a tight chinlock but American is able to escape after about minute and punches Miller into the corner. Should see a better show rating with Oliver back on top.

at least you got some good skill improvements out of last week's main event (and I'm guessing it was still enough to improve your standing in the Northwest?). Maybe the following week, you can bring them back in a 6-man match
