From There to Here - A Search for Glory

The BBCF bug bit me again, as has the dynasty bug, so I am going to document my character's attempt to rise to stardom in the coaching realm.

The story begins in the summer of 2012. My character's name is Brandon Haugen. A little bit of Brandon's history:

- Grew up in Ludington, MI.

- Played college football (Safety) for D3 Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL, graduating in 1999.

- Was an assistant with Wheaton from 2000-2001.

- Head coach at John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, IL from 2002-2007.

- Assistant coach at University of Michigan from 2008-2011.

Career Goals

* Win a conference championship

* Finish in the Top 10 in a season

* Play in National Championship game

* Win a National Championship

* Coach a 1st Team All-American

* Coach a Heisman Trophy winner

* Coach an NFL 1st Round Draft Pick

* Coach an NFL #1 Overall Draft Pick

* Win a conference Coach of the Year award

* Win a National Coach of the Year award

* Coach Michigan or Notre Dame

* Win a National Championship at Michigan or Notre Dame

Just to add a little more to the story, I will be exporting the draft classes to use in Pro Football Simulator so I can follow my former players in their NFL career.

"Brandon, this is Peter Nichols, the Athletic Director for Northern Illinois University, I was hoping I could talk to you about an opportunity here with the Huskies," the voice on the other end of the phone announced as I was walking out of Schembechler Hall.

"Sure, Mr. Nichols," I replied as my heart started racing a little faster than it had been just 20 seconds earlier.

"Brandon, I have to say I've been following your career since you were an assistant at Wheaton, and have been very impressed with your coaching ability, commitment to your players, and the type of man you are," he shared. "Listen, we have a need for a head football coach here in Dekalb, and I was hoping you could come for a day and see the school and the facilities, and we could talk about the position," he continued.

"Yes, I would like that," I excitedly responded.

"Great, could you be here Thursday at 9 am?"

"Yes, sir, I will see you on Thursday at 9 am," I answered.

"Excellent Brandon, I will see you here at my office then," he confirmed before hanging up the phone.

I drove home with a little extra zip that evening, and obviously could not conceal the excitement when I walked in the door because my wife immediately greeted me with, "What's with the smile, Coach? I know you are anxious to see us, but what's up?"

"Well, honey, I just received a very interesting phone call from the A.D. at Northern Illinois. Seems they would like to talk to me about their head coach position."

"Brandon, that is wonderful," she said in a half-cheer. Annie grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago, so if this were to work out, she would be closer to home.

Now don't get me wrong, both of us really enjoy Ann Arbor, and I love coaching at Michigan, but the chance to be a head Division 1 football coach has been my dream for a long time. I didn't want to put the cart before the horse (or the sled before the husky in this case), but even just the fact that I was being considered made the dream seem that much more attainable.

I couldn't wait for Thursday!

As I walked from the Yordon Center to the practice field on our first day, I thought back through the previous few weeks. It seemed like a whirlwind, and I paused as if to catch my breath. From that initial visit and interview, to the phone call with the offer, to sitting down and signing that four year, $875,000 per year contract, the fact that I was the head football coach of Northern Illinois University didn't seem real in many ways.

Because things happened so quickly, and we were late into the summer already, I kept a number of the existing assistant coaches on staff for this season at least. Some of the main assistants for me this year are:

- Offensive Coordinator - Jeffrey Douglas, 28 years old. Jeffrey is young for an offensive coordinator, but seems to have a pretty good offensive mind. Game-planning appears to be his strength, from what I have noticed thus far, but I'm a little concerned about his ability to develop players. It is something I will have to keep an eye on over the course of the season. He prefers the West Coast offense, and I like a more balanced, traditional I formation offense, so we will also see how our philosophies gel over the season.

- Defensive Coordinator - Chris Wright is our DC. He is 36 years old, and likes to line up in a 3-3-5 on defense. I'm a defensive-minded guy myself, but I prefer the 4-3, with a strong MLB as the leader of the group. I have some concerns about Chris as well, primarily in his ability to develop players, so if I have to take more of an active role in coaching the defense, I will do just that.

- Special Teams - Leroy Vasquez, another young coach at 32 years of age, will coach our special teams. He appears to be an average motivator, below average game-planner, and a poor developer of talent (a common theme on the staff).

We have been practicing for a couple weeks now, and, well, I would not tell the team this, but it could be a long year. We are hurting for talent, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Losing our starting QB and RB from last year obviously hurts, and we don't have any experienced players at those positions ready to step in and replace them.

Let me run through a few of the positions and ensuing battles:

QB - We have 2 seniors here, David Blankenship and Dennis Bullock, but neither has played much in their career. Sophomore Jeff Davenport may end up getting the nod though, both to give us the best shot to win this year and to see what we might get from him in the future. I prefer mobile quarterbacks, and Bullock is our most mobile, but with our running back situation, teams will likely stack the box and make us pass, which Bullock does not do particularly well.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/QB_Preseason.jpeg

RB - We will probably use a 3-headed backfield here, with true freshman Joe Johnson, senior Ramon Martinez, and junior Derek King battling it out for carries. None of the 3 will strike fear in the hearts of defenses.

At fullback, sophomore Scott Fernandes will likely start, but Lowery and Lucero will all get action as well.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/HB_Preseason.jpeg

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/FB_Preseason.jpeg

Receivers - Kenneth Miller (Jr) and John Rivera (Jr) are the unquestioned starters at this time, so the battle here will be for the #3 and #4 receiver slots. *Zachary Martinez (Jr) and Larry Mayo (So) have the inside positions for the spot. *I like Rivera's size (6'4", 214 lbs), but I'm not as high on his hands right now. *He also needs to hit the books, which will be a continuous battle as well.

At tight end, Brandon Flores (Jr) and senior Rodney Shelton will both play a lot. *Flores is the better blocker, and our running game needs all the help it can get, so he may play a little more than Shelton. *

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/WR_Preseason.jpeg

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/TE_Preseason.jpeg

Linebackers - unquestionably the strength of the team, our linebacking corp will be asked to lead this defense. *MLB Michael Ragland is probably our top player overall, and will be one of our captains. *Outside backers Melvin Suarez (Jr) and Nicholas Williams (Sr) will start here, with Bennie Jones (Jr) getting a lot of action as well.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/ILB_Preseason.jpeg

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/OLB_Preseason.jpeg

Secondary - Safeties Paul Anderson (Jr) and T Head (Sr) will anchor the defensive backfield, and will have to cover a lot of ground from burnt corners most likely. David Franz (Sr) and Jacob Dickson (Jr) will most likely be the starting corners, with redshirt freshman James Garcia the likely nickel back.

I think the Board's expectations of a Top 3 finish in the MAC are optimistic. We just don't have the talent at this point. But we'll do what we can, and I remind them this is a process.

Our Schedule this year is:

Week 1 - UAB

Week 2 - Louisiana-Lafayette

Week 3 - Middle Tennessee State

Week 4 - Buffalo

Week 5 - OPEN

Week 6 - at Central Michigan

Week 7 - at Miami (FL)

Week 8 - Western Michigan

Week 9 - at Ball State

Week 10 - OPEN

Week 11 - UMass

Week 12 - at Toledo

Week 13 - at Eastern Michigan

We open with 4 straight home games. Hopefully we can use those to get the year started off well and use the momentum. Conversely, if we struggle coming out of the gate, at home, it may not bode well for the rest of the season.

We also decided on redshirts this week. The plan is to redshirt true freshman who we see as having any sort of potential who are not necessarily absolutely needed at their position.

The list of redshirts is:

* WR James Emerson

* TE Jamie Pierson

* OT Thomas Carter

* OG Darren Bender

* DE Jack Clark

* ILB Nathaniel Snyder

* CB Luis Porter

Week 1 - UAB @ Northern Illinois

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/UAB@NIU_Score.jpeg

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/UAB@NIU_Scoring.jpeg

This one was tight for most of the game before a late touchdown pass from David Blankenship to Kenneth Miller sealed it for us for our first win of the season, and the first win of my BCS career.

Starting QB Jeff Davenport struggled, going 11-27 for 107 yards, 2 interceptions. The plan all along was to play both Davenport and Blankenship, but Jeff's struggles gave David more time than intended.

The running game struggled mightily, and if we don't improve, it could be a long year. Ronald Martinez led us in rushing with 32 yards, but that came on 18 carries.

On the defensive side of the ball, we sacked their quarterbacks 4 times, with pressure more plays as well. Melvin Suarez (OLB) had two interceptions as well.

Week 2 - Louisiana-Lafayette @ Northern Illinois

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/ULL@NIU_Score.jpeg

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/ULL@NIU_Scoring.jpeg

David Blankenship got the start at QB this week, and played alright, passing for 127 yards and 3 touchdowns, but again we completed less than 50% of our passes.

Our running game needs to get going to help out the porous passing game. Derek King was the leading rusher, gaining 65 yards on 18 carries.

Kenneth Miller caught 6 passes.

Paul Anderson and Melvin Suarez led the defense with 11 and 10 tackles respectively. Suarez also sacked ULL QBs 3 times, and his cohort, Bennie Jones, also had 2 sacks. Jacob Dickson had an interception.

- Starting RB & KR John Johnson has been ruled academically ineligible. Ronald Martinez will get the start at RB.

- Injuries - C Hart (Sprained MCL), MLB Ragland (Pulled Quad) - Hart is out, but Ragland will play as much as he can

- Top Games around the BCS - no Top 25 teams meeting

Hopefully Buffalo's porous defense allows us to get some offensive momentum going. Saying Blankenship is our "hot" offensive player is not saying much.

From an injury standpoint, we are in good shape right now. No major injuries.

Top Games around the BCS - #5 West Virginia @ #14 Texas Tech, #17 Iowa @ #7 Penn St., #13 Georgia @ #3 Florida.

Week 5 - We are off this week. We'll spend the week assessing our QB and RB situations. The play has been poor, but David Blankenship has been the least poor at QB, so will probably continue to start. None of the quarterbacks have a completion percentage above 45%, and it's pretty hard to win when your running game struggles, and the passing game is even worse.

Top Games - #9 Tenn at #2 Florida, #3 Missouri at #8 Georgia, #7 LSU at #13 Alabama, #4 Iowa at #19 Wisc, #6 Ohio St. at #20 Nebraska

I'm going to move ahead quickly for season 1 and post the scores for the remaining games of the season:

Game 5:

Game 6:

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/Mia@NIU_Score.jpeg

Game 7:

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/WMU@NIU_Score.jpeg

Game 8:

Game 9:

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/UMass@NIU_Score.jpeg

Game 10:

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/TolvsNIU_Score.jpeg

Game 11:

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/EMUvsNIU_Score.jpeg

So we end the season 4-7. Disappointing, but not unexpected given the lack of talent on offense particularly.

Final 2012 Stats

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/Final%20Passing%20Stats.jpeg

Not much to be excited about here. Blankenship and Bullock are seniors, so Davenport and Green are the only returning QBs with action. Davenport will be the starter heading into next season, pending any incoming freshman who unseat him (which wouldn't take much).

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/Final%20Rushing%20Stats.jpeg

Not much here either. One rushing touchdown all season. Horrendous. Martinez is a senior, so we lose our leading rusher, but as with the QBs, it is not much of a loss. We have a fair number of returning scholarship backs, but RB, as with QB, will be a priority in recruiting.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/Final%20Receiving%20Stats.jpeg

Rivera and Miller had solid seasons, given who was trying to get the ball to them. Both return for their senior seasons, so will be counted on to be leaders next season. Matthews and Shelton are both seniors, so we will need to replace their numbers.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/Final%20Def%20Stats.jpeg

SS Paul Anderson had a very good year. He returns next year for his senior season, so will be counted on again for another good season. We will miss Michael Ragland at MLB, but OLBs Suarez and Jones return to anchor the backers.

Final Assessment:

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/final_evaluation.jpeg

Um, ugly. Not how I wanted my first season in Dekalb to go. Of course, recruiting wasn't really my fault since I wasn't there, but alas, nothing much to feel good about for 2012. But the good thing is it won't be hard to improve.

2013 Offseason Notes

- Board announces the budget will be $100,000 less this year. That hurts my plan to fire both OC Jeffrey Douglass and DC Chris Wright. As a result, I decide to hold on to them for at least one more year.

Transfer recruiting

- offer scholarship to LSU RB Bryan Walters (51/74) - Freshman - Goes to Tulane.

- offer scholarship to Arizona St. ILB Joshua Valadez - ACCEPTS

Recruiting

- $28,250/week (after transfer recruiting)

- 12 scholarships available

- Positions targeting: QB, RB, T, G, DE (2), DT (2), ILB, CB

- Pretty much targeting IL, WI, MI, IN, OH (stay local - save $$)

2013 Preview

Northern Illinois Schedule

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/schedule.jpeg

Board Expectations

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/expectations.jpeg

Position Overviews

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/qbs.jpeg

Davenport will go into the season as the starter, but freshman Lewis will play often. We decided to redshirt Lopez.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/rbs.jpeg

True freshman Stone will be the starter at halfback, and we have high expectations for his career. Johnson will be the backup, followed by King and Long. All will get carries though. We will redshirt O'Neill, the other recruit this season.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/receivers.jpeg

Rivera and Miller are returning starters at WR, and the unquestioned starters this year. Mayo, Martinez, and Diaz will be receivers 3-5.

At tight end, senior Brandon Flores will be the starter, backed up by redshirt freshman Pierson.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/olinemen.jpeg

The starters at tackle will be Healy (So) and Brooks (Sr). Second string will be true freshman Butler and Johnson (Jr).

Starting guards will be freshman Bender and true freshman Harris. Backing them up will be Edwards and Rodriguez.

Fowler will start at center, backed up by Hart, who was 3rd team All-MAC last season after Fowler was lost for the season.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/dlinemen.jpeg

The defensive line will see two true freshmen most likely start at DE in Kruse and Cleveland. Jordan and Gallardo will get plenty of action as well.

At DT, another true freshman will start at one spot, in Newman, while Perez and another true freshman, Owens will battle for the other spot.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/linebackers.jpeg

Seniors Suarez and Jones return to anchor the linebacking corp, while true freshman Amos Connor will probably start at MLB. Freeman will vie for the job as well.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/dbs.jpeg

In the secondary, senior Jacob Dickson and either true freshman Jesse Barnes or sophomore James Garcia will be the starters.

At safety, the starters will be Jack Hancock and Paul Anderson, probably the best player on defense on the team. backups will be Robertson at FS and Booth at SS.

http://www.domstenfamily.com/bbcf/haugen/2013/special_teams.jpeg

Parker returns after a solid junior season, and his leg will be counted on for points.

Punter Cecil Laughlin is a pre-season candidate for the Ray Guy Award.

Overall, we could have up to 10 true freshmen starting for us by the end of the season. That is a sign of the lack of talent in the upper classmen, but will certainly give me early gray hairs. But we are hopefully building a solid foundation for the future.

Well, at least it wasn't worse . . . .

We were completely dominated in this one. West Virginia had 454 total yards of offense (150 run/304 pass) to our 141 (50 run/91 pass). Our QBs had just 9 completions in 35 total attempts (Davenport 5-24, Lewis 4-11).

Stone was our leading rusher, with 43 yards on 15 carries.

On a positive note, we did sack West Virginia QB David Turner 3 times (Perez, Gallardo, Connor).
