The Journey Begins with Glory Road Wrestling (RTG)

Recommended Posts

Ok, as I mentioned in the Road to Glory thread I've taken up the challenge and completed my first year, but I've decided I'd like to try my hand at a Dynasty as well. So, before continuing with the game I'm writing up the first year's worth of the Dynasty. This first post is to lay out the setup.

Conversations from the Back - January, 2013 (Part 1)

"Uncle" Larry was even larger than I remembered him, which was a bit surprising given I'd grown into a big enough frame myself. Something about looking up at him as he walked around his personal ring perhaps.

"So this is it kid," Larry said. "I'm offering this, my local connections, my name, my experience and a small operating float for the day to day expenses."

I had to smile at that. "Define small," I said.

"Look kid, I like you. Your dad's a great friend and he's told me all about these dreams of yours. He's also told me you've done more than pick up some training for the ring. Apparently you're quite the student of the business. So the way I figure it, we have an opportunity here. I'm tired of the road and I miss Canada. Retirement's a lot closer than my first match, but I'm not ready to walk away yet. And you. Well, no one really gets anywhere in this business without someone giving them a chance. So, we put together a little company and I get to wrestle and help out the newest generation of the boys and you have a chance to show the rest of the community that you've got what it takes in the ring and in the office."

"But," I said.

Now it was his turn to smile as he leaned on the ropes and stared down at me. "But I'm not throwing away the hard earned and well invested earnings of a 26 year career on a wrestling company. You want this thing to succeed you're going to need to make it work with what I give you. I'm happy to give you a shot, but I wouldn't be doing you any favor making it easy."

"I can live with that."

"Good. Now, let's go talk about who you want to hire and start making some phone calls."

Conversations from the Back - January, 2013 (Part 2)

I was holding my breath while I waited for Larry to go over the booking sheet for our first show. "You know what I like best about this idea kid? It shows me you've got your heart set on things long term. Not so sure about these teams names though. How did you come up with them?"

"Random word generator."

"Huh. I kind of like that actually. You'll have to show it to me later. Now this tournament, it's not for our tag titles, right?"

"Right. Every January we'll kick the year off with a tag team tournament for the GRW Cup of Team Glory. We'll have regular tag titles too, for the rest of the year, but January is tournament month."

"Fine idea kid."

"Well, I can't take much credit for it. I'm basically ripping off Mid Atlantic's Rip Chord invitational."

"Of course you are, but it's a good draw for them and if you're going to rip something off you'd best go with what works. Also, I like the tag spin. Helps make it ours."

"So you're ok with it all?"

"Kid, it's my company but I made you the booker so you could show what you've got. I'm not stepping in and nay-saying your ideas unless I absolutely have to. As far as I'm concerned we sink or swim based on your ability. If this is what you want, then it's what we do. Just this once, to help you relax, I'll say it though. It's a good plan, and the show should go off well. Now let the boys know, and I'll get the ads going."

Christian Long's Post-Show Diary, January 2013

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-JWrwjVV/0/XL/i-JWrwjVV-XL.jpg

The first show went better than I could have hoped. We've definitely started off punching above our weight. Sure, almost nobody showed up, but in a year or two the DVDs of this show are going to be in high demand. The elimination round matches were all ok, given the circumstances, and the main event actually encroached on not bad territory.

Going forward I'll be booking the Modern Ninja Killers and Ground and Pound in a feud revolving around White Angel and Larry battling it out for our Championship Title.

And I'd like to see Wild and Wicked struggle with Crazy Chaos for the tag titles. Ah! Wild and Wicked! I'm sure Blaze and Youngman are future stars in this industry and it turns out they are a pretty good team. A real natural fit.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for me and Malloy. We just don't seem to be able to get on the same page together out there. The Evening Express' days are numbered.

IMPORTANT NOTE!!! -> Never hand Allison Addison a live mic again. Or at least, not without a script attached to it. When I sent her out there and told her to get the crowd really hyped up for the first Wild and Wicked match, and not much else, Larry just gave me this look, shook his head, and walked away laughing. Wish he'd shared his insights before I pushed her through the curtain, but ah well. No real damage done I guess and better to find out sooner than later.

Dishing Dirt with The Grand Avatar, January 2013

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-PH5xWWd/0/M/i-PH5xWWd-M.jpg

Welcome Rasslin' Fans. Grand Avatar here. The man in the shadows, and that's where I'll be staying thank you very much. Still, from this vantage point I'm going to bring you a brief rundown of the best and most interesting bits from the dirt sheets each month. Consider me your curator for all the industry news, gossip and the business of the business. Enough intro though, let's get started.

Dearly Departed

The industry bid farewell to Frenchie Marcel this week. Frenchie was 71 and had left the biz some time ago, but is still remembered well by fans of the 80s for his tag team title reigns with Jean-Peirre Baptiste, the first of which ran over a year and the second of which went over 4. In that time they had some amazing battles with the legendary Calgary Wolverines (Hall of Immortals members George DeColt and Whipper Spencer Marks).

Companies to Watch

The SWF and GSW both had good months (albeit on decidedly different scales) and have expanded their relative reaches. SWF needs particular note as they are now an international force.

Down in Australia RAW had it's own kind of good news as they signed a PPV deal with Australia Options. PPV is always a great sign for a company's continued success.

New Man in Power

WEXXV found their new booker in Yatsuhiro Atshushi. The 20 year pro is not particularly known for the garbage hardcore style of Warrior Engine, but he did have that juice fest with Tadiyuki Kikkawa in 2002. It'll be interesting to see what he does with the always-almost-but-not-quite-going-out-of-business promotion.

Match of the Month Contenders

There was a lot of good wrestling this January, particularly in the Canadian and Mexican scenes. The two Border Pro Wrestling cousins, North and South were unparallelled with their in the ring product. Wednesday and Friday nights were consistently the nights of not good but great wrestling.

On NOTBPW Championship Wrestling they had a match of the month contender every week, sometimes twice!

Steve DeColt went over Sean McFly in week 1 and 3. Those wins were broken up by Sean McFly taking home the victory in week 2. With guys this good parity booking is fine by me. Sean McFly also defeated Johnny Bloodstone on Week 3's show and on week 4 Bloodstone lost to Duane Stone in a rare awesome Canadian match not involving Decolt or McFly.

Down Mexico way Mayan Idol and Champagne Lover had quite the series with Idol beating Lover each of week 2, 3, and 4. The Friday night Luch Libre show of week 4 also saw Pablo Rodriguez defeat El Leon in a match as good as any of the others I've listed here for you. If you haven't caught these matches go out and rectify that immediately.

Final Note

Listen up fans. If you've got a wrestler, promotion, belt, booker, valet, whatever, that you're a particular fan of you just let me know and Dishing Dirt with The Grand Avatar will make it a point to keep an eye and ear out for news about them. Otherwise, see you back here next month.

Conversations from the Back - February, 2013

"Look Larry, I don't know how many times I can say I'm sorry about this. I just thought the whole wild man thing would work well for you."

"Well, obviously you were wrong Kid." Larry was sitting with his arms crossed and seemed genuinely more peeved off than I'd ever seen him before.

"I, uh, did let you have as much creative input as you wanted on the gimmick."

"I told you before, sink or swim, this is your show. You say play wild man I'm going to respect you enough as the booker to play wild man. Maybe it is my fault though. I guess I just thought someone with hair like yours must have had some creative instincts in them."

"Ouch."

Larry just waved his hand. "Ah whatever. There's a lot that goes into booking, you can't be good at all of them. You're pretty damn great when it comes to getting people into that ring for the cheapest possible rates and at the end of the day that'll be more important to keeping us afloat than good gimmicks."

I was smart enough to take an opening when I saw one so I jumped on the chance to change topics.

"So Larry, how about the next card? Like your match up?"

"I'm not sure. This Laine fellow's pretty good with a mic. I hope he's as smooth in the ring. Why are you waiting on a title match though? That belt we had made is just collecting dust right now."

I shrugged. "I like tournaments. Angle and Gutmann, You and Laine. Next month the winners go at it in the main event for the GRW Championship. We'll sate the audience's thirst for gold with a Tag Team Title match this month."

"The Crazy Chaos - Wild and Wicked return bout? Sounds good. You're going to jerk the curtain with that big fellow Reid I see. Any reason you're keeping yourself on the bottom of the card?"

"I've got plenty of time to hang out in main events in my future. I'm happy to take the in-ring slow while I focus on booking and learning the road agent ropes."

"Sounds smart," Larry said as he stood up to leave. "Maybe you could figure out how to design a good gimmick sooner or later too.

Seems he wasn't quite over the bad gimmick just yet after all.

Christian Long's Post-Show Diary, February 2013

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-RC4SvNv/0/XL/i-RC4SvNv-XL.jpg

The show went pretty well I think. Sure, it wasn't as good as the debut, but that's ok. We also made less money, but we did make money for the second month in a row and that's the most important thing. Considering it's not like anyone in the arena really knows him yet I think Laine handled himself well in the ring and on the mic. Of course, it probably helped that Larry and him turned out to be a natural fit in the ring together. Larry wondered, but he has his answer now. They are great when they wrestle.

On a more personal note, I loved my match with Reid. It didn't mean much, but we worked together almost as well as Wood and Laine did.

Next month we'll crown our inaugural GRW Champion, and though Angel and Larry are going to be matched up for it like promised, I think I might throw in something a little extra to make the match special. I've been looking at the finances and I think I can just pull it off.

Dishing Dirt with The Grand Avatar, February 2013

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-PH5xWWd/0/M/i-PH5xWWd-M.jpg

Welcome back Rasslin' Fans. The Grand Avatar returns! We've got to start with some very sad news this month so let's just get right into it.

Dearly Departed

A far too young worker left us this past month when Skyscraper had a tragic encounter with a runaway steamroller. My sources in the Australian wrestling scene tell me you can expect a memorial show to remember the young man next year.

And More Bad News

Certainly nothing else as tragic as the Skyscraper passing has occurred in the last 30 days, but you have to feel for Leper Messiah, who is suffering through a tragedy of his own. The big man will be on the shelf for at least a year with a herniated spinal disc. You always hope someone will make it back from injury to continue their career, but Messah will be approaching 40 if he returns and a big man like that with back issues might find it too hard.

A Mixed Bag of News for SWF

Good news for SWF - they signed a PPV deal. Bad news - their rise to international wrestling power was short lived and once again can only really be considered a big player on the American wrestling scene.

And Now For Some Absolutely Good News

After a decade's absence from the biz, during which most people probably thought he had retired and forget to mention it, Jesse Christian announced this month that he was returning to wrestling at 42 years old! His first match in ten years was a tag affair in which he and Rod Remus went over Ricky Turner and Brady Prince at an independent show in the Tri State area.

Match of the Month Contenders

First of all, to make things really simple - watch NOTBPW. No company on the planet today has a finer main event scene. Steve DeColt, Sean McFly, Dan Stone Jr., Duane Stone and Johnny Bloodstone got together in various combinations to put up 8 MOTM contenders. Unbelievable.

SOTBPW also continued their top-notch in ring display, though with less consistent output. The was a tag match on their second week show that had Mayan Idol and Rodriquez beat Champagne Lover and El Leon. Later in the month on Lucha Libre Champagne Lover finally scored a win over his rival Idol in another great match.

Early this month a new company managed to put up a contender for The Grand Avatar's MOTM when TCW had Joey Minnesota beat Bryan Vessy at TCW Presents Total Wrestling. It warms the man in the shadows heart to know the border cousins aren't the only companies capable of putting on really great matches.

Final Notes

Ok, that's it for this month. I'll be back to dish more dirt next month. Don't forget, you can always put requests in for people, companies, belts or whatever else rasslin' related that you want The Grand Avatar to keep an eye on.

Conversations from the back, March 2013

"Frankie, glad you could make some time for me," I said to White Angel, aka Frankie Dee, when he stopped by.

"Sure, there a problem or something?" he asked.

"Not that I know of. I just wanted to make sure you were clear on the plan for Glory Days and your feud with Wood going forward. I mean, when I hired you I promised you'd be an icon for GRW and I don't want you to think I've forgotten about that."

"Why is this conversation suddenly making me nervous?"

"Sorry, let me cut to the chase. I don't plan on letting you touch the title for some time, and you're going to have a few setbacks over the next few months, but it's all in service of making sure you are the undisputed fan favorite of GRW."

"By loosing?"

"No. By getting screwed. I'm thinking classic title chase scenario here. Dastardly heel escapes by crooked methods and runs from chasing babyface until there's no where left to run and no one left to help him. Larry's the dastardly heel, you're the babyface who won't give up."

"So what's with Kid Toma being thrown into the mix?"

"Just for the next show. He's key to step one of this chase. You and Larry have the title match scheduled, but I don't want you taking a loss in this first encounter. Toma will be presented as Haley's way of making sure you don't get the title and in the match there will be an almost 2 on 1 feel to the affair. Plus, Larry can win the title without you getting pinned or submitting."

"But I will get the title, right?"

"Definitely, definitely. We're just going to make sure it feels like a great accomplishment."

"Ok. I'll trust you on this for now, Long. But don't think you can string me along forever."

"Frankie, baby, I'm no tease. I promise - satisfaction guaranteed with this program."

Great stuff! I like the show write-ups - really quick to read and well-suited for an RTG diary.

Just a thought - if you want people to predict on a card, maybe do a 'quick picks' after the preview for people to cut and paste/bold?

Something like

Quick picks:

Joffy Lain vs. Marvel Malloy

Irwin Gutmann vs. Bradley Blaze

Ernest Youngman vs. Christian Long

Crazy Chaos vs. Riot Act for the GRW Tag Team Titles

Larry Wood versus Kid Toma vs. White Angel for the GRW Championship

(If you're not looking for predictions, of course, ignore that!)

Glad you're liking it. I've never tried a dynasty before, so tips are appreciated. I like the idea of the interaction predictions make, but I guess I wasn't thinking about them because I've already simmed this entire first year and was in a sort of recap mindset. I saw in another dynasty that someone had a prediction contest and let the winner pick who'd get one of their titles next. I think I'd like to have something similar, maybe letting someone book a special attraction match or my lower-card tittle or something. With only one show a month it'd have to be a quarterly contest or something like that. For now though, I may rush through some of these months so I can get back to playing the game (I'm holding off my RTG game until the diary catches up) so I won't make it a contest yet, but I'll add the quick picks going forward for any who want to make predictions. It'd certainly be fun to see what other players see as the "right" choice.

As Jaded has kindly already set up this month for us I'll just do a little CTRL+C, CTRL+V action here:

Quick picks:

Joffy Lain vs. Marvel Malloy

Irwin Gutmann vs. Bradley Blaze

Ernest Youngman vs. Christian Long

Crazy Chaos vs. Riot Act for the GRW Tag Team Titles

Larry Wood versus Kid Toma vs. White Angel for the GRW Championship

So, anyone reading along? Who do you see winning? (Of course the final is probably fairly obvious if you really are reading the preshow conversations...)

Quick picks:

Joffy Lain vs. Marvel Malloy

Irwin Gutmann vs. Bradley Blaze - Laine and Blaze were great for me in a 2010 RTG game.

Ernest Youngman vs. Christian Long - Youngman's awesome.

Crazy Chaos vs. Riot Act for the GRW Tag Team Titles - I can't buy Reid as a champion.

Larry Wood versus Kid Toma vs. White Angel for the GRW Championship - Reasonably sure on this one, at least...

Joffy Lain vs. Marvel Malloy - The American Cobras are my go to team. Marvel takes the win here.

Irwin Gutmann vs. Bradley Blaze - Blaze is better in the long run.

Ernest Youngman vs. Christian Long - Yeah. Ernest is probably the best worker you have.

Crazy Chaos vs. Riot Act for the GRW Tag Team Titles - Storm Spillane decided it for me. It's a shame Storm and the High Flyin Hawaiin have poor partners.

Larry Wood versus Kid Toma vs. White Angel for the GRW Championship - It's Larry Wood and the conversation confirmed.

Christian Long's Post-Show Diary, March 2013

Ok, I'll admit it, I'm just throwing things at the wall right now and seeing what sticks. The main event, GRW Championship storyline I'm pretty sure about. The rest, well we'll see how it goes. Nothing particularly revelatory tonight though. I did like working with Youngman, we didn't have the connection that Reid and I did, but the match went off well enough for this card.

Bringing in Kid Toma for the main worked as well as I hoped it would. They had a great match for a show that only had 13 people live. (And that's something I'm getting a little worried about) If we can find the money in the future I'd really like to have him come back on a regular basis.

Meta-note: I'm not sure exactly why I wasn't pushing Wild and Wicked to the moon at this point. I think it was a combination of following auto-push for card placement and the fact that early on they could not break out of truly abysmal momentum.

Dishing Dirt with The Grand Avatar, March 2013

http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-PH5xWWd/0/M/i-PH5xWWd-M.jpg

Company Fortunes: Rise and Fall

Something to talk about down in Mexico, and for once it isn't SOTBPW. EMLL, El Bandido's one-on-one only promotion is reaching new heights for itself and is a regional player now in Northern Mexico. TCW, on the other hand is finding it hard to maintain a truly national presence. They're still a cult favorite though.

Real Fireworks in SWF Main Event Scene

The Grand Avatar has got some real dirt for you now. It seems that Remo Richardson and Vengeance, aka Skull DeBones, really don't get along. Even still, it hasn't been an issue in their most recent matches together at from a fan perspective. Like each other or not, those professionals know how to work.

It's been a relatively quiet month otherwise, so on to the:

Match of the Month Contenders

There was a lot of good wrestling around the world this past month, but The Grand Avatar rounds up only the very very best for your consideration.

First of all, to keep this list manageable let me just say once again to watch anything coming out of NOTBPW's top card matches. Every time some combination of Steve DeColt, Duane Stone, Sean McFly or Johnny Bloodstone got in the squared circle together magic happened. And they got together in one form or another a lot.

Next, our other regular highlight, SOTBPW kept things good but not great until their last big event of the month, Malo Ido Buenas Epocas, when their semi-main and main event sent everyone home happy. First, Champagne Lover defeated El Demonio and then the show ended with a traditional trios match that saw Phoneix, Rodriguez and Mayan Idol defeated Axxis, El Leon and Xtinction.

Our last stop this month is over in Japan at PGHW where PRDIE Kosio is really heating up, though that's not really surprising for the amazing worker. He was a part of 3 MOTM contenders first losing to the legendary Eisaku Kumomasu and then twice going over fellow former wrestler of the year winner Yoshimi Mushahibo. Kinda makes The Grand Avatar want to make a return to Japan.

That's it for this month folks. I'll be back next month to dish more dirt.

Conversations from the Back, April, 2013

I found Larry going over the books, which is probably never a good place to find the boss.

"Kid," he said looking up when I came in. "Did you know we didn't even clear $250 last month?"

"Better than losing $250, isn't it?" I said.

"This isn't funny. We're trying to run a business here and you go blowing our whole profit margin on a one-night appearance for an indy-worker with some talent."

"Larry, come on now. We can afford it once and awhile. We've nearly quadrupled your 'small float' you fronted for GRW day to day expenses. And besides, I'm not going to make it a regular thing."

"Good."

"It was a good match though. Not a lot of companies this size putting out that kind of quality. It's good for us. Long term vision. Trust me."

"I am, kid. I am. So what're you thinking this month?"

"More spit-balling. The main's going to be you and Gutmann versus Laine and Angel."

"You going to keep having Haley give Angel a hard time?"

"Yep. She knows her way around a mic better than anyone else here so we might as well use it. And the evil boss is nearly a must have nowadays. Besides, with your ah...Wild Man gimmick I don't think we want people equating you with the ownership and management of GRW."

Larry's left eye started twitching a bit at that point, so I figured it was time to go deliver the source files to the printer so we could start putting up posters. We gotta do something to get people in the seats.

Curious why you gave Spillane and Malloy different tag partners, when they are an established team with decent experience together already?

A combination of two factors.

One, after I hired everyone I decided to listen to auto-push for the time being while I tried to learn the game, I was never particularly good at TEW2010 and there's plenty of new to get used to. The Game was pushing Spillane hard, but not so much with Malloy. My initial teams were (in an OCD sort of way) kept with partners having the same push and a face and heel team at each level.

Two, I plan to eventually get them together through some storyline and booking, maybe even in a double turn to face when I need to liven things up a bit. I'll probably do that in 2014, assuming I can keep them in the promotion of course.
