WWF 1989: No Holds Barred The Movie And The Match

Recommended Posts

**I will be using The No Holds Barred mod, obviously, which starts the day after Summerslam 1989.**

The main feud heading into SummerSlam was between The Mega-Maniacs (WWF Champion Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake) and Randy Savage and Zeus. At WrestleMania V in April 1989, Hogan defeated Savage to win his second WWF Championship. WWF financed a professional wrestling movie "No Holds Barred". Hogan starred as the hero Rip, a popular professional wrestler, while Tom Lister played the villain Zeus. In the movie, Hogan defeated Zeus. The rivalry spanned in WWF, because Zeus wanted to take revenge from Hogan in real-life. In WWF, he was also billed as Zeus. He made his first appearance on WWF television on May 27, 1989 edition of Saturday Night's Main Event before Hogan's WWF title defense against Big Boss Man in a steel cage match. He was introduced by Boss Man's manager Slick. During Hogan's entrance, Zeus badly attacked him. On the July 29 edition of Saturday Night's Main Event, Zeus attacked Brutus Beefcake during Beefcake's match with Hogan's rival Randy Savage. Zeus did this because Beefcake was Hogan's best friend. Hogan came to the rescue but was unable to drop Zeus because Savage gave him two chair shots in the back. This led to the Hogan & Beefcake vs. Savage & Zeus encounter at SummerSlam.

The main match on the card was between Rick Rude versus The Ultimate Warrior for the WWF Intercontinental Championship. They had a posedown at Royal Rumble in January 1989 which was won by Warrior. Rude angrily attacked Warrior after the posedown. This led to their title match at WrestleMania V, where Warrior lost the Intercontinental Championship to Rude. They were signed to a rematch for the title at SummerSlam, with Rude defending the title against Warrior.

Before the event began airing live on pay-per-view, Dino Bravo defeated Koko B. Ware in a dark match.

The first match of the pay-per-view was a non-title tag team match between the WWF Tag Team Champions the Brain Busters (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard), accompanied to the ring by Bobby Heenan, and The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart). In the middle of the match, Anderson tried to interfere, causing all four men to fight in the ring. Meanwhile, Heenan had the referee distracted, which allowed Anderson to perform a double ax handle, dropping his elbow onto the back of Hart's neck as Hart covered Blanchard. Anderson then rolled Blanchard out of the ring and covered Hart. Heenan stopped distracting the referee who turned to see the pin and began the count without realizing that Anderson was not the legal man in the match.

The second match of the evening was between Dusty Rhodes and The Honky Tonk Man, who was managed by Jimmy Hart. Rhodes had the advantage until Hart distracted him. This allowed The Honky Tonk Man to grab Hart's megaphone and ram it into Rhodes' midsection. The Honky Tonk Man continued in the offensive position until Rhodes' was able to get back on his feet. The Honky Tonk Man, however, shoved Rhodes into the referee, knocking him out. This allowed The Honky Tonk Man to hold Rhodes while Hart attempted to hit Rhodes with The Honky Tonk Man's guitar. Rhodes, however, moved out of the way, and Hart hit The Honky Tonk Man instead. Rhodes then performed his finishing move, the Bionic Elbow, and pinned him for the win. After the match Sean Mooney interviewed Honky Tonk in the isle. A still dazed Honky, thinking he was Elvis, thought Jimmy Hart was "Cilla" and asked Mooney where the stage was.

The third match, which pitted Mr. Perfect against The Red Rooster, began with a shoving match in the center of the ring. Mr. Perfect performed several offensive maneuvers on The Red Rooster, even preventing Rooster from reversing a slam to the mat. Mr. Perfect ended the match by performing a dropkick and the Perfect Plex and then pinning him for the win.

In the subsequent match-up, Rick Martel and The Fabulous Rougeaus (Jacques and Raymond) faced Tito Santana and The Rockers (Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty). In the first moments of the match, Santana and The Rockers cleared all the opposing team members from the ring. Jannetty was the legal man for his team and faced all three opponents as they tagged each other into the match. Martel and the Rougeaus kept Jannetty isolated in their corner by utilizing illegal double team moves. After some time, Santana tagged Michaels into the match, who quickly regained the advantage. Near the end of the match, Jimmy Hart, who had accompanied The Rougeaus and Martel to the ring, distracted Jannetty, who was hit from behind by Jacques. As a result, Martel was able to pin Jannetty, even though Michaels never tagged out of the match and was still the legal man.

The next match was a WWF Intercontinental Championship match between The Ultimate Warrior and the defending champion Rick Rude, who was accompanied to the ring by Bobby Heenan. The Warrior gained the early advantage in the beginning of the contest by press slamming Rude from the ring onto the arena's floor, where he followed him and continued the assult, including hitting Rude with the IC belt. He continued to have the advantage until Rude was able to thwart an offensive maneuver by pushing The Warrior from the top rope onto the turnbuckle. The two wrestlers swapped the offensive position until "Rowdy" Roddy Piper came down to ringside to distract Rude. This allowed The Warrior to perform a German suplex, press slam, and a Warrior Splash from the top rope. The Warrior then pinned Rude to become the new Intercontinental Champion.

Jim Duggan and Demolition (Smash and Ax) defeated André the Giant and The Twin Towers (The Big Boss Man and Akeem) (with Bobby Heenan and Slick). Smash pinned Akeem after Duggan hit Akeem in the head with his 2×4.

Hercules defeated Greg Valentine (with Jimmy Hart) by disqualification. Valentine pinned Hercules with his feet on the ropes. Guest ring announcer Ronnie Garvin (who was feuding with Valentine at the time) announced Hercules as the winner of the bout by disqualification.

Ted DiBiase (with Virgil) defeated Jimmy Snuka by countout. DiBiase won when Snuka was counted out.

In the main event, WWF Champion Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake faced Randy Savage and Zeus. In the beginning, Beefcake and Savage brawled on the floor and Zeus no-sold Hogan. Beefcake came out and made the save but was caught by Zeus in a bearhug. Hogan tried to save his partner but he also became victim of a bearhug by Zeus. Savage came off the top rope and hit Hogan with a diving double axe handle. He hit Hogan another double axe handle from the top rope and a running knee for a near-fall. Savage applied a chinlock on Hogan but Hogan hit Savage with shoulder blocks. He came off the ropes where Zeus assaulted him. Zeus got a tag and then he beat on Hogan and locked in a bearhug where he took Hogan to the mat for several near-falls. Zeus took him in their corner and then tagged Savage. Savage connected with a neckbreaker on Hogan and spitted on Beefcake, forcing him to get into the ring. Savage hit a belly to belly suplex on Hogan for a near-fall. Hogan tagged in Beefcake who hit Savage with a high knee for a near-fall. He locked in a Barber's Chair on Savage, who fell to the knees but then got up and drove Beefcake's head in the corner. Zeus tagged in and was very angry. Beefcake hit him with an eye rake and applied a Barber's Chair on Zeus. Savage took his manager Sensational Sherri's loaded purse and hit Beefcake in the back with it. Savage got a tag, calmed down Zeus and got a near-fall on Beefcake which ended after Hogan made the save. Savage went for another cover and Hogan came in again and chased Savage, who hid behind Hogan's manager Miss Elizabeth and was beaten up by Hogan. Zeus came in and locked a chokehold on Beefcake before tagging Savage. Savage and Beefcake knocked out each other. Beefcake tagged Hogan. Hogan connected with a corner clothesline on Savage and then assaulted Zeus. He hit a big boot on Savage, sending him to the floor. Hogan tried to suplex Savage in the ring from the apron but Sherri tripped him as Savage fell on Hogan for a near-fall. He clotheslined Hogan and he hit a Savage Elbow from the top rope but like WrestleMania V, Hogan no-sold it. He beat on Savage and sent him to the floor after an atomic drop. Zeus tagged in. He beat Zeus with clotheslines. Zeus fell on one knee. Elizabeth tripped Sherri and Beefcake tossed Savage on the mat. The referee was distracted. Hogan took advantage and hit Zeus with Sherri's loaded purse, followed by a scoop slam and a leg drop for the victory.

WWF Primetime

Studio Announcers: Vince McMahon, Jesse Ventura, Lord Alfred Hayes, and Bobby Heenan

Arena Announcers: Gorilla Monsoon and Tony Schiavone

Vince McMahon, Jesse Ventura, Lord Alfred Hayes, and Bobby “The Brain” Heenan welcome us to the WWF Primetime studios. Vince informs us that there is a new member to the WWF broadcast team and welcomes Sir Oliver Humperdink to the Primetime desk. Humperdink tells us that after watching Summerslam, he just knew he had to come back to the WWF team because this is a company on the rise.

The hosts go over the results of Summerslam and inform us that ½ of the main event will be in action tonight as Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake will go up against “The Macho King” Randy Savage. Jesse tells us that Savage will make mince meat out of Fruitcake. They go over the rest of the card, and Bobby Heenan says that before the night is over his man, Arn Anderson, will become the new WWF Heavyweight Champion when he defeats Hulk Hogan

Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake vs. “The Macho King” Randy Savage w/ Queen Sherri and Zeus

Savage tries unsuccessfully to attack Beefcake prior to the match starting, but Brutus is ready for it, and gets and early advantage on Savage. After a series of hip tosses and back body drops, Brutus connects with a high knee and knocks Savage to the outside. Zeus jumps up on the apron and distracts the ref. This allows Sherri to back rake Brutus. Brutus turns his attention to Sherri and begins to chase her around the ring. Sherri runs past Savage, who was laying in wait, and Savage clotheslines Beefcake. Monsoon tells us that Beefcake is at a disadvantage because of Sherri and Zeus at ringside, and informs us that Hulk Hogan is preparing for his match against Arn Anderson, so he can’t help his friend out.

Savage rams Beefcake into the steel steps before rolling him back in the ring. Savage lays a beating on Beefcake for the next few minutes and with the help of his cohorts, is able to illegally keep control throughout the match. Savage whips Beefcake into the turnbuckle and goes for a splash, but Beefcake moves out of the way and begins to make a comeback. Beefcake calls for the Sleeper, but Zeus reaches through the ropes and trips him up. Beefcake starts to jaw with Zeus and this allows Savage to roll up Brutus, and with a hand full of tights, he gets the win

Winner: “Macho King” Randy Savage

“The Macho King” Randy Savage In Ring Promo:

Randy Savage grabs a microphone and says that at Saturday Night’s Main Event, his buddy Zeus will defeat Hulk Hogan and become the new WWF Heavyweight Champion, and after they are done celebrating, that Savage will challenge and defeat The Ultimate Warrior and become the new WWF Intercontinental Champion. He says that Zeus and himself will become the most destructive duo in WWF history.

Demolition vs. The Twin Towers w/ Slick

The Twin Towers gain an early advantage after jumping Demolition before the bell. Bossman and Akeem successfully double team Smash and cut the ring in half, so Smash never gets close to Ax to make the tag. After a few grueling minutes, Akeem has Smash in position for the 747 splash, but Smash moves out of the way and makes the hot tag to Ax. Ax quickly runs in and knocks Bossman off the apron and body slams Akeem awkwardly on his shoulder. As Slick is checking on Bossman, Demolition connects with the Decapitation Elbow on Akeem for the win. After the match, Demoltion talks into the camera and says they will be the new WWF Tag Team Champions and that The Brain Busters better be ready for them.

Winners: Demolition

The Brain Busters Jump Demolition:

As Demolition are making their way back to the locker room, The Brain Busters run in an attack Demolition. They beat them down viciously for a few minutes before agents and refs run in and escort them to the back. Tully Blanchard looks into the camera and says “Be ready for you?!?!?! Demolition, you just got demolished”

Saturday Night Main Event Control Center:

Mean Gene welcomes us to the Control Center and says that off the heels of the hottest show of the Summer, Summerslam, matches for Saturday Night’s Main Event have already been signed. They will be calling this No Holds Barred: The Event. He tells us this will be a historic night of action on NBC and you will be able to watch all the action for free.

We get an introductory video for a Superstar that will debut very shortly. We see a darkened cave, and soon a torch is lit. Slowly, the figure of a serpent appears and blows a huge flame with the torch. On the screen “Coming Soon: The Dragon” appears.

WWF Intercontinental Championship: The Ultimate Warrior © vs. The Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart

The Honky Tonk Man enters the ring first and demands that the crowd shut up, so he can play his new hit single. Honky begins to play, but is cut off by The Warrior’s music, and The Warrior runs down to the ring to a thunderous applause. Warrior connects with a shoulder tackles Honky, causing him to drop his guitar. Warrior picks it up and chases Jimmy Hart to the outside, before destroying the instrument by smashing it on the turnbuckle post. Warrior quickly gorilla presses Honky and connects with a splash for the win.

Winner: The Ultimate Warrior

Main Event: WWF Heavyweight Championship: Hulk Hogan © vs. Arn Anderson w/ Bobby Heenan

Arn offers Hogan a handshake to begin the match, and despite the crowd advising Hogan not to, Hogan goes to shake Arn’s hand, but Arn pokes Hogan’s eyes and gets the early advantage. After 10 minutes of beating Hogan within an inch of his life, Arn Anderson connects with a Spinebuster on Hogan. Heenan begins to celebrate that Arn is about to become the new champ. Arn covers Hogan for the 1.…2.…but Hogan kicks out of the pin attempt and begins to hulk up. Arn looks incredulous and tries to stop Hogan, to no avail. Hogan punches Anderson then hit’s a running forearm on Heenan, who had jumped up on the apron. Hogan connects with a body slam, followed by a big boot, and leg drop for the win.

WWF NEWS AND NOTES

** As we saw last night on WWF Primetime, WWF saw the return of Sir Oliver Humperdink. Humperdink, as of now, will strictly be used as an announcer for WWF programming, but could return to managerial duties in the future.

** Also, last night, we saw a video hyping the debut of "The Dragon". Of course, this was for the returning Ricky Steamboat, who recently signed with the company.

** Speaking of signings, the WWF was hard at work to bring in new talents. As of this writing, WWF has confirmed the signings of Billy Jack Haynes, Badd Company (Pat Tanaka and Paul Diamond), Sam Houston, and Keith Hart. Billy Jack Haynes and Sam Houston are familiar to WWF fans, and will be returning to the company shortly. Badd Company comes from the AWA, where they had some classic matches with The Rockers while in the AWA. Keith Hart is a member of the legendary Hart wrestling family. Keith Hart will not be used as a wrestler, but instead will be used as a referee and road agent for the company. WWF officials are also hard at work to bring in Kerry Von Erich into the company. Von Erich, a former NWA Heavyweight Champion, is a mainstay in the Texas area and is a second generation star who the company sees as a future main eventer.

** Last night, Akeem suffered an injury in his match against Demolition, and it's being reported that he tore his rotator cuff after being slammed on his shoulder. No word on how long Akeem will be out of action, if at all.

** The following is confirmed for WWF Wrestling Challenge:

Jake "The Snake" Roberts vs. Bad News Brown

The Hart Foundation vs. The Powers Of Pain

Ronnie Garvin vs. "Ravishing" Rick Rude

MAIN EVENT: "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka vs. Zeus
