What If? - A WWE Diary

Recommended Posts

Introduction

There is a question that every wrestling fan asks at some point. Weather they are a fan of the Sports Entertainment phenomenon that is World Wrestling Entertainment, the more all-action, high flying, jaw-dropping sensation that is Total Nonstop Action, the pure art wrestling style of Ring of Honour or any other promotion to have ever seen combatants fight it out in the squared circle, the question is always the same....

What if I was in control?

As far as "what if's" go, there are a staggering amount of them in the sport of Professional Wrestling and a lot of them are high stakes. One company that has become synonymous with "what if's" is Vincent Kennedy McMahons World Wrestling Entertainment, formerly known as the World Wrestling Federation.

What if WCW did not go bankrupt when it did? Would the WWE have been beaten or would they somehow pull through?

What if the Montreal Screwjob never took place, would Bret Hart live up to his promise of relinquishing the WWF Championship, or would he have taken it to WCW with him and discarded it?

What if The Rock had made it into American Football and never looked back? What if Stone Cold Steve Austin was never given a chance? What if The Undertaker's Streak didn't start?

So. Many. Questions.

January 2013 saw big news for the WWE, most notably the Royal Rumble. And that is why I have selected the very first week of January as my starting point for this story. There are hundreds of paths to follow, but there can be only one ending.

State of the WWE Part One - Company Information

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/1017/wwe_2d_logo.jpg

Name: World Wrestling Entertainment

Initials: WWE

Owner: Vincent Kennedy McMahon

Head Booker: Open Spot

History

World Wrestling Entertainment (or WWE for future reference) is the current leader in Professional Wrestling and the undisputed most dominant promotion of it's kind. Opened back in 1952, the WWE was originally founded by Boxing Promoter Roderick James McMahon and Joseph Raymond Mondt, named the Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC) and the promotion soon became a member of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA)

However, November 1954 saw Roderick McMahon die. One of Mondt's associates, Ray Fabiani, brought in Vincent James McMahon, the son of Roderick McMahon. Together, Vincent and Joseph proved to be successful, owning 70% of the NWA's booking.

Vincent and Joseph left the NWA in 1963 and re-named CWC to World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). Joseph left the WWWF in the late sixties and Vincent rejoined the NWA in 1971. In 1979, the WWWF was renamed to World Wrestling Federation (WWF)

In 1980, Vincent Kennedy McMahon, son of Vincent James McMahon, founded Titan Sports and bought the WWF from his father in 1982. WWF left the NWA in 1983. The WWF began offering T.V broadcasts to territories across the United States, as well as signing huge stars to long deals, such as Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper.

1985 saw the first Wrestlemania and in 1993, the WWF started offering weekly shows in the form of WWF Monday Night Raw. However, competitors WCW started airing Monday Night Nitro in 1995 and the Monday Night Wars began.

WWF began to lose the Monday Night Wars in a significant way, so a new time came for the WWF, the Attitude Era. The Attitude Era saw the creation of new stars like The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin, while Vincent Kennedy McMahon used the controversy of the Montreal Screwjob to create his Mr. McMahon persona.

WWF eventually managed to defeat WCW and went on to buy both WCW's assets and ECW's. 2002 saw the WWF change it's name to World Wrestling Entertainment and the beginning of a Brand Split.

Recently however, the WWE has been criticized of becoming lazy, now that all serious threats to their business are gone. A PG Rating being enforced saw the loss of many interesting match types and the WWE's Woman's Division has dropped in quality significantly.

However, there is a new opening for Head Booker of the company, so it might just be time to "shake things up again".

Welcome ladies and gentlemen to TheSmarkyBrit.co.uk, my name is Ryan Hatfield and I am the writer of this blog. I review WWE's weekly shows, take the piss out of John Cena and do top 5's, so it's all good.

End of 2012 Top 5 - Best and Worst Gimmicks - 1st of Jan, 2013

And so, here we are, 1st of January, 2013! 2012 has been an exciting year for WWE and has seen some of the most interesting gimmicks and personalities emerge. However, not all has been good, for there are some gimmicks that just make fans of the WWE cringe. But the past is the past, let's move on...

Psych. I'm going to be re-visiting the dreadful, terrible decisions made by the booking team, as well as the fantastic gimmicks that prove to be some of the best this business has seen.

Top 5 Best - Number Five

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/2097/Wade_Barrett6_cutout_by_Crank.jpg

Wade Barrett's "Bare Knuckle Fighter"

Wade Barrett was injured on the 20th of February, 2012 and was off-screen for quite some time. During the hype for his return, he was quoted as saying it was time to "re-ignite the flame". Barrett later returned, sporting a much more brawl-based approach with a matching finisher, terribly named, The Bullhammer.

Barrett was a Bare Knuckle Fighter for reals, fighting on the mean streets of London, so he is perfectly suited to his new gimmick and it has helped him to jog everyone's memory on how dangerous the man is, as well as helping him to become the Intercontinental Champion.

Top Five Worst - Number Five

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/955/cesaro_wh3d2.png

Antonio Cesaro's "Lover of the Nation, Hater of the People."

Now don't get me wrong, Antonio is a great performer with wrestling skills that are second to few, but the simple truth is, Cesaro's gimmick kinda sucks.

Not only is it very similar to the plain generic "I'm foreign, I hate Americans" gimmick, but they don't even pull it off properly. The idea is that Cesaro hates Americans but likes America, but it just doesn't work. So we have a Swiss Heel coming down to the ring wearing a U.S Flag covered jacket, matching trunks and holding a huge god damn U.S Flag.

One thing that is impressive though, is that it got those damn Americans to stop chanting "USA, USA, USA" every time a single shred of American patriotism is shown.

Top Five Best - Number Four

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/2347/AJ_2013CutByJibunjishin1.jpg

AJ Lee's "Crazy Diva"

AJ Lee has become undoubtedly the most popular diva on the WWE Roster and there is a fine, fine reason for that. AJ started out being the lowly manager of Daniel Bryan, got dumped and then went insane. Then she became the manager of CM Punk and played a key part in the CM Punk, Daniel Bryan and Kane rivalry.

And finally, she turned heel by pushing John Cena off a ladder and aligning with Dolph Ziggler. AJ was fantastic at acting crazy and has become extremely popular because of it. Hat's off to her.

Top Five Worst - Number Four

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/64/john_cena_42_unconquerable.jpg

John Cena's "Down and Out"

For the course of 2012, John Cena has been playing a sort of gimmick that revolves around him not being able to win the big one, the big one in this case being either his match against The Rock, or his 13th ****ing World Title.

This gimmick is terrible frankly because it is not even believable. John Cena is the resident Superman of the WWE and he's been given that moniker for a reason. Hell, take Extreme Rules as an example. Brock Lesnar spends 20 minutes being the shit out of Mr. Cena, only for John to summon the magic strength of lifting up Brock Lesnar and dumping him onto some steps to win.

The worst part is, this means 2013 will probably see Cena back in the spotlight. Again.

Top Five Best - Number Three

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/2586/damiensandow1_wrestlingmaniac.jpg

Damien Sandow's "The Enlightened One"

Damien Sandow has already become extremely popular to the Internet in the short time he's been back in the WWE (He was Idol Stevens). Sandow's gimmick is very entertaining, an excellent way to gain heat and is overall just awesome.

Damien possess great charisma and is easily able to pull off some fun lines, using a very high level of vocabulary. And of course...his catchphrase.

Your Welcome.

Top Five Worst - Number Three

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/2535/Brodus_Clay_2012CutByJibunjishin17.jpghttp://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/695/Naomi_Cameron_Funkettes_CutOut_Jess-x.jpg

Brodus Clay, Naomi and Cameron's "Funkasaurus"

Brodus Clay is about a good wrestler as I am a good bowler, so in short, very bad. So it astounds me how much screen time he gets in favour of say, Tyson Kidd. Then again, if Tyson Kidd did have screen time, it'd probably be him getting squashed by Brodus.

Clay's gimmick is not entertaining to anyone over the age of maybe 10 and frankly the entire dance he does is a big time waster.

Now then, on to Naomi and Cameron. These two were both professional wrestlers and now look at them. Well, Naomi anyway, don't know too much about Cameron. Naomi was a member of NXT Divas and I believe she came second after AJ. Or was it Kaitlyn?

Top Five Best - Number Two

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/4428/theshield1_wrestlingmaniac.jpg

The Shield's "Guardians of Justice"

The Shield are some of the brightest individuals in the WWE, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose are great wrestlers with charisma, Roman Reigns is related to The Rock and he's big. So obviously, these guys needed a good gimmick to debut, WWE hit the nail right on the head.

The Shield have dubbed themselves as defenders of justice, interfering whenever something unjust should take place. Now, at the moment, they seem to be another heel group, but if they start edging more towards the whole defenders of justice, this could be interesting.

But more on topic, they are great at their roles and the gimmick has made them one of the more interesting parts of Raw.

Top Five Worst - Number Two

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/3871/3mb1_wrestlingmaniac.jpg

Three Man Band's "Fake Rockers"

Now then, let's talk about the crap stable in WWE. Three Man Band, or 3MB if your one of those hipster people who text every five seconds, consist of Jinder Mahal, Heath Slater and Drew McIntyre. So WWE took three of the most un-charismatic members of their roster and gave them a fake rockers gimmick.

My main problem with this is with how far Drew McIntyre has fallen. Back in 2009, he was "The Choosen One", winning Intercontinental Championships and battling with people like John Morrison, Matt Hardy and Edge. Now he's wearing leather.

3MB need to dissolve soon or at least get a gimmick change and become serious.

Top Five Best - Number One

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/2381/wwe_title.jpg

Well, here we go, the moment everyone has been waiting for. The official WWE Best Gimmick of 2012 Champion is....

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/37/CM_Punk_31_GD.jpg

CM Punk's "Commander of Respect"

CM Punk has blown up in the WWE and has been riding high since his "shoot" promo in mid 2011. Since then, Punk ran with a "Voice of the Voiceless" gimmick and it worked. Punk has held the WWE Title for over a year now and will hopefully hold on to the title for a little longer. However, some began to believe he was becoming boring.

The 1000th episode of Raw changed that. Punk, frustrated over The Rock disrespecting him turned heel and attacked Rocky, add in Paul Heyman and there we go, new Punk.

Punk has performed exceptionally well with his new gimmick and probably will continue to be one of the key players in WWE.

Top Five Worst - Number One

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/2381/usmcdonalds.jpg

And now for the part that I was looking forward to. The official WWE Worst Gimmick of 2012 Champion is......

http://psd-dreams.de/data/thumbnails/761/Natalya_2_CutOuT_Jess-x.jpg

Natalya's "Flatulence"

Oh WWE, you bloody idiots. Natalya sported a "flatulence" gimmick for a brief while in WWE and it was only brief because she stopped appearing on Raw for quite some time. I wish I was kidding.

Seriously, her gimmick was that she would fart, usually in useless scenes that were created just for the purpose of her farting. And sometimes in matches as well. Now, this is a stupid gimmick anyway. But WWE, why the hell would you give this shit (pun intended) to one of your best Divas available and A ****ING MEMBER OF THE HART FAMILY?

I feel sorry for Nattie, she's sunk down into obscurity so much that she might as well leave and go to TNA, 'cause I don't even see her contract lasting with the WWE.

Thank god, Raw is finally up. Was a b***h to format that. Note to self, write and format, never, ever just write it up and promise yourself you will go back and format it later. Anyway, here are the scores for predictions.

Michigan Hero - 4 / 4

NWAvsWWF - 2 / 4

Christmas_Ape - 3 / 4

Pig. - 4 / 4

Jaysin - 3 / 4

Infinity King - 3 / 4

Minarin - 3 / 4

As Michigan Hero and Pig. both scored a maximum, they can select any superstar in the game world and I will do everything in my power to ensure they are on my roster A.S.A.P. *To Michigan, BANE MADDOX IS ALREADY ON MY ROSTER*. I'm looking more towards established stars, like former WWE employees or current TNA employees.

Also, I have about 10 people under negotiations for WWE Next Gen, suggestions are still open :)

And on a final note, if anyone would like to let me know how they think the first show went, that'd be nice too :p.
