The Ace Report

Month in Review

The month of July is in the books with our final Saturday Night taping now complete. Critically there is no doubt this was a successful month. We’ve received raved reviews, particularly the Bash at the Beach pay-per-view, with the main event match between Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan drawing particularly high praise.

Commercially, on the other hand, the month wasn’t a good one. We lost over $400,000, due in part to the contract buyouts that were handed out and also due to the selection of the Orlando Arena as the venue for Bash at the Beach. WCW management insisted on the location despite the low capacity. Still, WCW management wants me to tighten the purse strings and so we have. We’ve allowed some wrestlers to leave that were previously under contract in order to lighten the financial load going forward. Some of these guys had a bright future, but we had to make financial decisions that made sense for the company.

Former creative head and current Executive Vice President Eric Bischoff has been making trouble in the locker room. His attitude has been a problem from day one, but his friendship with the company’s biggest star, and his vital role in signing him, has kept him around. Still, I’m pushing WCW execs to let Bischoff go and let me deal with the fallout. I’m not even satisfied that he’s a good announcer!

So to wrap up the month, here’s the latest breakdown on the roster comings and goings:

WCW wishes all the best in their future endeavors to the following workers:

Craig Pittman, Buddy Lee Parker, Lt. James Earl Wright, The Patriot, Diamond Dallas Page, Jean-Paul Levesque and The Diamond Doll, Kimberly Page.

WCW Welcomes the following workers to the roster and hopes they will give their all to the company:

Dean & Joe Malenko, Steve Williams & Terry Gordy, Dick Murdoch, Dick Slater, wrestling legends Sgt. Slaughter, Greg Valentine and Tito Santana, former AWA World Heavyweight Champion Rick Martel, former Triple Crown Champion and NWA United States Heavyweight Champion Stan Hansen, Georgia legend Bullet Bob Armstrong, British wrestler Johnny Smith, English wrestler Norman Smiley and last but not least, independent wrestling sensations Chris Jericho and Lance Storm along with Smokey Mountain Wrestling’s hottest bombshell, Tammy Lynn Sytch.

The Malenko brothers will be working together under the name The Great Malenkos. Chris Jericho and Lance Storm will be tagging as Sudden Impact and will be managed by Tammy Lynn Sytch. No word yet on the bombshell’s name in WCW.

Match #1

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/SteveWilliams.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/TerryGordy.jpg VS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/GeorgeTakano.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/TerryTaylor.jpg

Miracle Violence Connection vs. George Takano & Terry Taylor

Ring veterans Terry Taylor and George Takano teamed up to take on the returning Miracle Violence Connection. Schiavone reminds us that last week on Saturday Night the MVC made quite the impact by attacking the tag team champions. Jesse and Schiavone debate just how good the Miracle Violence Connection is, with Schiavone reminding fans that they were tag champions in WCW in the early part of the 90s. Jesse wonders aloud whether Steve Williams has been pinned in the United States this decade?

We have a split screen showing the assault on Cactus & Kevin and Dave Sullivan from the prior week. When the split screen ends we see Williams and Gordy annihilating Takano and Taylor before the bell can ring.

Tony: Such disrespect! Didn’t even let the bell ring!

Jesse: If you wait for the bell you are missing the best opportunity to attack Ton!

The ref gets control of the action but the match ends quickly. Williams and Gordy quick tagged each other repeatedly while they worked over George Takano. He managed to get the tag in to Taylor but Taylor fell victim quickly to the stiff work of Steve Williams. Williams tagged in Gordy who dropped several running elbows on Taylor. Gordy tagged Williams back in and he finished it with a Doctor Bomb.

Winner: The Miracle Violence Connection by pin fall following a Doctor Bomb from Steve Williams

Grade: C-

Post-Match: As the bell rings, Gordy and Williams are blindsided from behind when Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan charge the ring and attack!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/CactusJack.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/KevinSullivan.jpg

An all-out brawl erupts between the four men. The tag champs are getting the better of things when security breaks up the fight. Williams and Gordy are smiling, enjoying the beat down!

Match #2

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/HonkyTonkMan.jpgVS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/MarcusBagwell2.jpg

Honky Tonk Man vs. Marcus Bagwell

The Honky Tonk Man made his WCW debut to a decent pop. He and Marcus Bagwell had a rather boring match that ended with a piledriver on Marcus Bagwell. Honky Tonk got the win and danced in the ring as Elvis music blared.

Winner: Honky Tonk Man by pinfall following a pilederiver

Grade: D+

Match #3

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/StanHansen3.jpg w/http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/BobbyHeenan.jpg VS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/MrT.jpg w/http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/JimmyHart2.jpg

Stan Hansen w/Bobby Heenan vs. Mr. T w/Jimmy Hart

Tony: Here we go guys! Mr. T’s in ring debut!

Jesse: And the last match of his career!

Mr. T makes his way to the ring first to a big ovation. He’s accompanied by Jimmy Hart. Stan Hansen comes to the ring next with Bobby Heenan. Hansen is flinging a bullrope around as he makes his way down the aisle, yelling at fans. They get in the ring as the bell rings. Heenan is on the apron and waives the torn Hulkamania shirt in Mr. T’s face. Mr. T grabs Heenan by the head and is about to punch him when Hansen takes him out from behind.

Jesse: And there it is folks! One mistake is all it takes in this business. Mr. T is an actor though. What does he know about wrestling!

Stan Hansen is taking Mr. T apart. He delivers a snap suplex to Mr. T and follows it up with an elbow drop. He is kicking Mr. T in the head and ribs and then stops to taunt the crowd. Mr. T is writhing in pain from the violent kicks. Jimmy Hart gets in the ring to check on him and gets grabbed by the hair by Stan Hansen! Hart is dancing around while Hansen holds him by the hair…BOOM! LARIAT! Jimmy Hart sells it like a million bucks, flipping over and playing dead, laying spread eagle.

Mr. T uses the distraction to get to his feet and start firing away on Hansen with jabs!

Tony: There you go Mr. T! That’s the boxing training!

Hansen is reeling backwards and Mr. T picks him and bodyslams him!

Tony: WHO’S BAD NOW!

Mr. T checks on Jimmy Hart who slowly gets out of the ring. Hansen climbs to his feet and Mr. T whips him to the ropes. Hansen ducks a clothesline attempt and bounces off the next set and delivers a devastating lariat! Mr. T takes it awkwardly, flying into the air and landing on the back of his head. Hansen makes the cover and gets the 3 count while Mr. T holds his head in pain.

Winner: Stan Hansen by pinfall following a Lariat

Grade: C

Post-Match: Jimmy Hart gets in the ring to check on Mr. T who looks to be seriously injured. Hansen grabs his bullrope and wraps it around Jimmy Hart! He motions that he’s going to hang him over the top rope! The crowd erupts all of a sudden when familiar music blares and a red and yellow giant comes running down the rampway!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/HulkHogan.jpg

Tony: Go get him Hulkster!

Mr. T lets Jimmy Hart go and Bobby Heenan runs out of the ring. Hansen stands his ground, daring Hogan to come get him. Hogan slides in the ring wearing a knee brace and the two men start pounding on each other! The crowd is going bananas as Hogan gets the upperhand and fires Hansen into the ropes. He goes for the Big Boot but Hansen catches the top rope and drops backwards out of the ring laughing. Hogan is yelling at Hansen to get back in the ring. Hansen merely laughs and points at Hogan’s injured friend as he and Bobby Heenan walk up the rampway, leaving Hogan in the ring to check on Mr. T.

Match #4

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/DoryFunkJr.jpg w/http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/RobertFuller.jpg VS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/DustinRhodes.jpg

Dory Funk Jr. w/Col. Robert Parker vs. Dustin Rhodes

Dory Funk and Robert Parker come to the ring first and seem awfully sure of themselves. Dustin’s music hits and the crowd cheers. No one comes out.

Tony: Where is Dustin Rhodes? Wait! There’s Dustin Rhodes! And Arn Anderson! And they aren’t alone!

Dustin Rhodes and Arn Anderson slide into the ring with steel chairs. Dory Funk turns around just in time to get walloped by Arn Anderson. The bell rings for a disqualification!

Winner:Dory Funk Jr. by disqualification

Grade: C

Post Match: Col. Robert Parker tries to get out of the ring, but Dustin Rhodes grabs him and smiles. He tosses him to Arn. Robert Parker starts looking back and forth at the two men, both holding chairs.

Tony: Payback time! I guess this is what Arn meant by his way!

They swing the chairs and miss. Parker drops to all fours and tries to scramble away, but Arn drops his chair and grabs Parker by his ankles. He picks him and drops him with an atomic drop! Parker stumbles forward and bam! Dustin Rhodes takes him out with the steel chair! The crowd eats it up!

Suddenly there is a commotion…

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/TerryFunk.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/JimmyGolden2.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/DickMurdoch.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/DickSlater2.jpg

Terry Funk, Dick Murdoch, Bunkhouse Buck and Dick Slater all rush the ring to make the save. Arn and Dustin slide out of the ring and leave, with Arn barking out “Now you know we mean business!”

Match #5

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/PaulRoma.jpg w/http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/PaulOrndorff.jpgVS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/SgtSlaughter.jpg

Paul Roma w/Paul Roma vs. Sgt. Slaughter

Sgt. Slaughter gets a big pop when he comes to the ring. Paul Roma comes to the ring with Orndorff. The two men are arguing, clearly not on the same page.

Roma gets in the ring and tells Orndorff to watch. The bell rings and Orndorff begins flexing, pointing at Sgt. Slaughter and laughing, obviously mocking his physique. Slaughter simply smiles and tells him to get some. Roma charges forward and gets caught by a back elbow! Slaughter gives him a backbreaker to follow it up. Orndorff is shaking his head on the outside, almost laughing. Slaughter dominates the match for the next few minutes before locking Paul Roma in the Cobra Clutch! Orndorff refuses to help and Roma taps out!

Winner:Sgt. Slaughter by submission via Cobra Clutch

Grade: D

Post Match

Paul Orndorff leaves the arena with Roma chasing him coughing. Sgt. Slaughter gets on the microphone.

Slaughter: Where is that maggot Steven Regal? Regal! You coward. I’m calling you out. You’ve run your mouth for weeks claiming your superiority. I want you to put your money where your mouth is snot bucket! Put your title on the line against me one on one. Let’s…

Sgt. Slaughter is taken out from behind when Steven Regal and Sir William charge the ring. They are stomping on him and Regal gets a microphone.

Regal: You fat American scum. You’re just like all these other peasants. What makes you think YOU are entitled to a shot at the World Television Championship? Just because you are an American? Ha! You Americans besmirch the name of freedom! You are just a bunch of fat cowboys!

Slaughter gets to his feet at this point and fights of Sir William. He goes after Regal but Regal slides out of the ring. Sir William swings the Union Jack at Slaughter but he catches it. The chin tightens! Slaughter pulls on the flag to get William close to him and locks him in the Cobra Clutch! For the second week in a row we go to commercial with Sgt. Slaughter choking out Sir William!

Backstage Segment

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/GeneOkerlund.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/RickySteamboat.jpg

When we come back from commercial, Gene Okerlund is standing by with the WCW United States Heavyweight Champion Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat.

Gene: I am here with the WCW United States Heavyweight Champion, Ricky Steamboat! Rick, you are certainly the undisputed United States champion, having beaten Steve Austin 2 falls to 1 at Bash at the Beach. Still, Steve Austin says he wants a rematch. What say you?

Steamboat: Well Gene, it’s simple. Steve Austin is a heck of an athlete. His problem is that he is arrogant. He’s a jerk. If he ever got his head on straight and tried to walk the straight and narrow path, he might just be a champion again. As for me, I’m a champion for the people. If commissioner Bockwinkel wants to give Austin a rematch at Clash of the Champions, I’m more than happy to go down to the ring and teach Steve Austin a thing or two about wrestling. Again!

Match #6

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/PaulOrndorff.jpg VS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/Sting.jpg

Paul Orndorff vs. Sting

Tony: No Paul Roma at ringside. I guess there is trouble with Pretty Wonderful Jesse.

Jesse: Really Ton? You think?

Sting and Orndorff work a nice old school wrestling match. Orndorff gets consistent offense in against Sting. The two men have a strength test that Sting starts winning when Orndorff breaks the test and kicks Sting in the gut. He tries to piledrive Sting, but Sting reverses it for a backbody drop. The match continues for about 15 minutes with the momentum swinging back and forth.

At about the 16 minute mark, Orndorff has the advantage and again tries for the piledriver, but Sting reverses it again and pulls Orndorff’s legs out and locks him in the scorpion. Paul Roma comes out and stands at the entrance way, arms crossed while Paul Orndorff taps out.

Winner: Sting by submission via Scorpion

Grade: C

Post-Match: Sting nods to Orndorff, showing respect for a hard fought match. He heads back to the dressing room when he is attacked out of nowhere!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/Vader.jpg

Vader beats the hell out of Sting on the rampway! Sting never gets a chance to defend himself before he is powerbombed on the concrete! Security rushes to his aid as Vader laughs as WCW goes to commercial.

Match # 7 Main Event

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/RicFlair5.jpg w/http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/BobbyHeenan.jpghttp://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/SherriMartel2.jpg VS http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/RickMartel.jpg

Non-Title Match

Ric Flair © w/Bobby Heenan & Sensuous Sherri vs. Rick Martel

Rick Martel makes his debut in WCW and high fives the fans as he runs down the ramp way. The crowd reacts lukewarm to him, not sure how to treat the “baby face” Rick Martel. Flair’s music hits and the crowd boos as Flair comes down the ramp. Heenan is holding the title and Sherri is glaring at him.

Tony: I don’t think those two will be sending each other Christmas cards Jess.

Jesse: They look like love birds to me Ton!

The match gets started and Flair and Martel put on a clinic. The match is a back and forth technical work of art. Martel plays the straight up babyface, but Flair doesn’t resort to his usual heel antics. The two simply put on holds and counter holds, with Martel coming out look sharp. The crowd seems to appreciate the good back and forth that is occurring, with applause breaking out for Martel when he gives Ric Flair a vertical suplex!

Tony: This is quite the showing for the debuting Martel!

Flair is screaming in pain as he holds his lower back, overselling the suplex. Martel grabs Flair by the legs and puts him in the Boston Crab! Flair is shaking his head, his hair flying around like a spinning mop. The crowd is getting behind Martel at this point. Sensuous Sherri gets on the ring apron and distracts the referee while Heenan helps Flair grab the ropes. The ref turns around and makes Martel break the hold. Martel smiles, knowing he just got got. Instead of protesting to the referee, he drags Flair to the middle of the ring…but gets rolled up!

1…2…kickout!

Martel and Flair both get to their feet and smile at each other. The two men go to lockup with Martel getting Flair in a sideheadlock. Flair throws him off into the ropes and Sherri pulls Martel’s leg out from under him! He face plants on the ring! Martel slowly gets up and starts yelling at Sherri and gets school boyed for the pinfall!

Winner:Ric Flair by pinfall following a school boy roll up

Grade: B

Post-Match: Rick Martel slaps the mat, furious at what just happened. Flair shrugs his shoulders as if to say, hey’ them the breaks! Suddenly the crowd erupts when “American Made” blares!

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b352/justtxyank/Diary/HulkHogan.jpg

Hulk Hogan comes down to the ring wearing his knee brace. He gets in the ring while Rick Martel slides out. Bobby Heenan gets behind Sherri!

Tony: What a weasel! Hiding behind a woman!

Jesse: That’s no woman Ton that’s Sherri!

Hogan and Flair come face to face, eyes fixated upon each other. Flair holds his title and screams “I’m STILL the man!” as WCW Saturday Night fades to black!
