AAA: Spreading Our Wings

Recommended Posts

When people ask me to name my favourite match, my usual response is simply to ask them what THEIRS was. After all, after more than twenty years in this crazy, cruel and wonderful business I'm pretty sure at least a couple barnstormers have completely slipped my mind. Obviously I'll never forget the big ones; Beating Farrah Hesketh for my first AAA Femme Fatale title, My 2 out of 3 falls match with Thunder Hike, Wanda beating me and ending my last FF reign, I'm sure there's a nice compilation of them and more on Youtube somewhere (I'd like my royalty check, by the way).

The truth is that my favourite match never crystallized in my mind until it happened, and that was my last one. Oh, there were better performances, better crowds, even better opponents, but in terms of pure emotion my career-versus-title match against Grace Harper will always top my favourites. It gave me a chance to step back and say to the rest of the girls "It's your turn, go out there and shine", something I'd been wanting to do for a while, but it wasn't until I'd retired that I realized what was necessary to truly drive it home.

Of course, favourite match or not, I always felt a pang of regret at the start of a new year. Once the hangover from New Year's had gone and we'd set up the ring for our first show of the year, I always had to fight down a powerful urge to throw on the tights and book myself into a grand return angle. It probably wouldn't be until I opened up the Cat's Lair for a new term and took a couple bumps from raw rookies that the desire faded again, but for now I could simply remind myself that I'd stepped away from the ring for a reason and keep the tights in the attic.

"I'll never understand why you went out the way you did."

I started, my reverie shattered by the intrusive voice of my step-sister, Jaime, or "Princess" as the girls liked to call her.

"What, you think your broken down old sister had a couple matches left in her?"

"More than a couple, big sis. There are a ton of girls here and elsewhere who are older than you were and they're still running the ropes with the best of them."

I shrugged. "Maybe so, but it was the right time for me. Damien and I were getting married and him being on the road was bad enough..."

"Cat, I love you and look up to you for a lot, but I lose a little respect for you every time you play at being Suzie Homemaker. You certainly won't catch me hanging up the boots just because I'm getting hitched."

I grinned, grabbing Jaime in a headlock and grinding her scalp with a noogie. "Hey, this homemaker can still kick your ass, girl. Trust me, you'll understand one day."

I maintained the hold for a couple seconds against Jaime's struggles before I finally let her go, ruffling her hair playfully just to rub it in. "Now get dressed, we've got a locker room meeting in an hour."

Jaime stuck her tongue out at me petulantly, but we couldn't help grinning at each other before she grabbed her bad and headed for the back, leaving me alone to look at the ring.

Maybe one day I'd step back in the ring to do something other than talk into the microphone. For now though, I had a show to put on.

For once the locker room for tonight's show was an actual locker room, a welcome change from the cramped storage rooms or washrooms we'd experienced in smaller venues. As I actually saw the rows of only slightly dented lockers and a floor clean of mould or unnameable muck I mentally made a note to book events here more often as long as they were financially viable.

The AAA locker room has an interesting dynamic; there's a definite sense of family present, probably because for the longest time this was the only promotion in North America that actually promoted the idea of women as viable professional wrestlers, and that concept gave the locker room a certain "Us against the world" mentality. That's not to say there still isn't friction, but tonight things were relatively quiet; a new year usually has everyone on their best behavior, at least for a while. Demelza and Nadia were in a corner comparing notes from New Year's while a few of the other girls had paired up to work out their matches. Surprisingly one of these pairings had turned into a sing-off contest as Wendy Anderson and Christy Higgins were belting out dueling versions of 'Popular' from Wicked, complete with choreography, to the amusement of each other, if few else.

I let them finish up their fun and gave them a token bit of applause before settling everyone down to give the start of year speech.

"Now that we've been properly entertained by our fine sopranos," I said, receiving some polite chuckles, "let's get serious for a while. 2013's going to be a big year for us; QAW's opened up a whole new market for women's wrestling and we want to take advantage of that opening, starting with putting our shows on the internet. Yes, that's right girls, the whole world gets to see you work now, so let's step up our game, make sure the Australians know where to go for competitive women's wrestling."

So sue me, I'm not exactly the most inspirational speaker. The point was made however, and hopefully the girls would take my words to heart and bring some extra intensity to their matches. After some quick Q&A for match details and the general psychology for the night I wrapped things up and headed out for sound check. If I couldn't guarantee performances, at the very least I could make sure the PA didn't blow out halfway through the show.

Angel Athletic Association Presents

Pretty Amazing

Held at the Washington State Gymnasium with a crowd of 1,763

Jaime Quine vs. Suzanne Brazzle

In a solid opener that probably took an unfortunate hit for having two babyfaces, Jaime and "The Miracle Blonde" worked to warm up the crowd and get them excited for the rest of the night. After almost 15 minutes of back-and-forth action Suzanne finally wore Jaime's defenses down enough to nail her with a Miracle Connection and grab the pin. D

Grace Harper stands in the ring, soaking up the fans enmity like it's mothers milk.

"Yes, go ahead, boo all you want. The fact is no matter how much you morons may not like it, you paid your money to see ME, the most dominant athlete in the Triple-A, dazzle and amaze your pathetic minds with my technical prowess. I saw you cheering for those two wannabes Suzanne Brazzle and Jaime" she pauses, grimacing visibly, "Quine, and all I could think was what insipid little sheep you all really are. Well let me enlighten you to reality, and that reality is that no matter how much you cheer or clap or chant, when I stand atop the mountain as Femme Fatale champion, you'll all have to recognize that it's ME, The Renaissance of Women's Wrestling, who's the face of this company and nobody-"

"Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns and Roses suddenly kicks in over the PA, immediately cutting Grace off mid-rant, followed soon after by Joanne Rodriguez who quickly climbs into the ring with a mic of her own.

"Sorry Grace, but I don't think I heard you correctly from there in the back. Did you actually say that you're the most dominant athlete here? Last time I checked you've held the Femme Fatale title, uh, let me count, uh, once?"

Grace glares at Joanne, but remains silent.

"Meanwhile, my name's on that title history three times. I think that puts ME in the category of most dominant athlete in this company."

"That means nothing!" Yells Grace, eyes blazing with fury. "My title reign was one of QUALITY, not quantity, I took on all comers! I RETIRED Catherine Quine! I showed the world what women could do IN the ring, something you could never do!"

"You certainly showed how you could cheat..."

"SHUT UP! You think you're a better representative for the Triple-A? Face me in the ring tonight! 20 minutes, one fall! I'll show you and ALL these ignorant sheep who's the real face of women's wrestling!"

Joanne grins, then brings her microphone close to her lips.

"Done."

Wendy Anderson vs. Christy Higgins

A short match to remind everyone that this is a wrestling promotion, Wendy finally won with a Flying Cross Body while Jim and I bemoaned her recent heel turn. E+

Lilly & Rose vs. The Foundation

The first tag match of the year went well, entertaining the crowd and showcasing the ability of both teams with their technical skill and high flying prowess. Finally Kate Lilly hit a Lilly Launch Pad on a fallen Jana Marie Bowen, scoring the pinfall. D

Missy Masterson is backstage, performing some pre-match stretches that would make a yoga practitioner wince.

"Being Top Contender champion is a huge responsibility. Some people think of the title as merely a stepping stone to the Femme Fatale title, but not me; to me it's just as important as any title in the Angel Athletic Association; whoever holds it stands as the representative of the new generation of women's wrestlers, a role model and example to live up to. It's a huge responsibility, but I intend to live up to such legends that have held this belt like Joanne Rodriguez and Raven Nightfall. The way I see it, the best way to live up to those legends is to face the best competition available, and tonight that competition is Devil's Daughter, one of the most decorated tag team specialists in women's wrestling today. Double-D, you're already an icon in this business, but with me, it doesn't matter whether you're an icon, a monster or a raw rookie. When you get in the ring with me, get ready for a scrap, because I fight like a girl!"

Missy Masterson vs. Devil's Daughter - AAA Top Contender's Title Match

A match that would have been much better had it been about 5 minutes shorter, Missy Masterson successfully defended her Top Contender title against Devil's Daughter, wearing her down to the point of exhaustion (which sadly wasn't a work, Double-D's cardio needs some work) before pinning her after an Identity Crisis. D-

The A-List vs. Good Lookin' Bunny

Our star heel tag team worked a good match with what many, sadly, consider our second-tier faces, Katherine Goodlooks and Jessica Bunny. The match was cliched to a point, with the heels cutting the ring in half and making Katherine Goodlooks play face in peril, but it got the crowd into the match and begging for the hot tag. Said tag didn't do much however as Demelza Wade quickly cut off the comeback and brought in Nadia to hit the tandem Star Treatment and get the win. My only complaint was that while Cat Jemson did a great job getting the crowd to absolutely despise the A-List, she and Nadia couldn't click at all in their interactions. D+

As Katherine & Jessica make a painful exit to the back, Demelza Wade calls for a mic.

"That, boys and girls, was merely a display of our utter dominance of the Tag division here in the Angel Athletic Association. Ever since we deigned to come down to this podunk promotion we said we were the best you were ever going to see, and I think we've proven that. We ARE the most entertaining and skilled tag team in this promotion, and every time we step into the ring, we show just how true that is."

Nadia Snow takes the mic from her partner and begins a slow cirlce around the ring. "Here's the problem though, we're here to prove to every single one of you people that we're the best tag team in this sorry excuse for a company. And you'd think that'd mean going after the Tag Team titles, right? WRONG! This company's Tag division is so inept that a cobbled together team are the current champions! Well, Demelza and I aren't going to stoop to that level. We want the best competition available, as sad as it is, and taking down a team of singles wrestlers who wanted a bit of the spotlight isn't exactly going to be a challenge. So we've got a message for Steph Blake and Zoe Ammis: For as long as you hold those belts, we're invading your territory just like you invaded ours. Now all of you will get twice the A-List action as we're going into singles competition!"

"Holy Moly! The A-List is invading the singles division! What a shakeup for the Triple-A!"

"The A-List is going to have to be careful, Jim, Tag Team wrestling isn't the same as Singles competition and I wouldn't be surprised if Demelza and Nadia are in for a nasty shock."

"Maybe, Catherine, but right now we're cutting to the back to hear from a tag duo that isn't splitting up any time soon, the Brendon Sisters!"

Michelle and Tracy Brendon are in their locker room, lacing up their boots, as seems to always be the case, Michelle speaks first, her eyes as serious as ever.

"Steph Blake and Zoe Ammis, I bet you think you're proud of yourselves, taking the Tag belts from us last month. I won't deny it, you beat us clean, no dirty tricks or underhanded tactics, and for that you can be proud. Here's the thing though, for the Brendon Sisters, every setback means a new opportunity, and by beating us, you gave us the greatest opportunity possible; the chance to make history and become 5 time Tag champions, a milestone nobody in over 15 years has accomplished, until today."

Tracy looks into the camera now, not quite as serious but equally as determined. "And when we take those belts back home to Idaho, there's going to be a party the likes of which even the A-List would hesitate to join in. We'd invite you, but something tells me you'll still be smarting from the whuppin' we're about to give you."

Blake & Ammis vs. The Brendon Sisters - AAA Tag Team Title Match

The main story of this match was whether or not Steph Blake and Zoe Ammis could work together as a team, considering both of their careers with AAA had been as singles competitors until last year. Sadly the Brendons underestimated the teamwork of the champions who at the very least recognized how to mesh their differing styles, leading to the younger Tracy receiving a drubbing by Steph Blake. A glimmer of hope came to the sisters when Steph forgot to cut the ring in half and irish whipped Tracy into the sisters' corner, getting Michelle into the match, but a quick tag by Steph brought in a fresh Zoe Ammis who countered Michelle's technical skill, minimizing the Brendons' advantage. Finally after a few more tags Steph hit Michelle with a Slingshot DDT and nabbed the pin, giving herself and Zoe their first title defense. D+

Joanne Rodriguez vs. Grace Harper

An amazing match, helped along by great chemistry, that had both women trading the advantage throughout the entire contest, even spilling out into ringside for a short brawl before returning to the ring before things got too violent. Joanne seemed to have the match in hand finally and set Grace up for a J-Rocker, but the ring-awareness of Grace allowed her to reverse it and drill J-Ro with a Fisherman's Suplex, getting the pin. C

Sara Marie York, the current Femma Fatale champion stands backstage, her gleaming title sitting as a place of honour over her shoulder.

"Suzue Katayama, last month at Deadlier Than The Male you decided to challenge me for the Femme Fatale title, not by standing up face to face and asking, but by interrupting my match with Suzanne Brazzle and hitting me with the Katayama Bomb. That's not how things are done in the AAA, Suzue, not while I'm champion. This company is the true home of American women's wrestling, of respect and honest competition, not your violent behavior. By all rights I should ignore you and give Suzanne a rematch, but when I won this title from you last year I swore I would stand for the highest ideals of this company, and if I don't cut you down to size you're just going to keep attacking me and my opponents until you get a title shot. So tonight, it's you and me, one more time. See you in the ring."

Sara Marie York vs. Suzue Katayama - AAA Femme Fatale Title Match

Another match with great chemistry, this one sadly suffered from a worn out crowd. It also doesn't help that Suzue has worse stamina than Devil's Daughter so this match had to be depressingly short. Nevertheless the crowd got behind Sara as she played the plucky underdog against the much larger and stronger Suzue. Finally after a flurry of strikes Sara finally hit Suzue with a dropkick that dropped her to one knee which gave her the necessary stepping stone to hit the Japanese crusher with an Energy Rush and retain her Femme Fatale title. Final Show Rating: D+
